Hello peeps!

Thought some of you might be interested in some tips and tricks for making gifs of your GW2 characters. Don't get me wrong here please, I'm by no means the be-and-end-all of gif-making, but maybe a handful of you might enjoy this? I do at least have experience with throwing myself in front of chak for hours. You decide if that's good or bad.

This is how I personally proceed and maybe some of you have better ways to do it! Feel free to share your own advice here :D

Let's get started! ･°˖✧◝(⁰▿⁰)◜✧˖°.

Choosing a location

So you chose a victim and have a neat little idea of what you wanna show. Now all you have to do is find a fitting location. Here's some things to consider:

How's the ambient lighting? Rotate your newly found top model at your location of choice to make sure the light hits from the best angle. Keep day and night cycles in mind. Some places also simply have bad light for your character; in that case try to think of a similar location that might look more flattering.

How busy is the background? You probably want your character to pop out, so the choice of scene is important especially if you don't have access to 3rd party depth-of-field filters. Keep in mind that moving background elements might look distracting.

If there are enemies around, can you get rid of them reliably or will they keep interrupting you? Are there safe spots to stand in outside of enemy range? Most enemies really don't hate you as much as you think. Unless you're in the Crystal Desert.

Strike a pose!

The basics:

Play around with the camera sliders in your options. Having your character big in the frame goes a long way! The vertical, horizontal and zoom sliders are your best friends.

Remember the UI doesn't have to be visible for you to type emotes in chat. Just to be safe from (public chat) typos though, I like to type the command with the UI turned on, then hide the UI, and then once I've adjusted the camera hit enter to play the emote. This is especially useful if you're trying to pose around enemies and don't have the time to frantically type things in chat.

Some tips for posing:

Rotating the camera while in first person mode rotates your entire character. This way you can turn around without having to redo your /emote all the time. This is especially useful if you use persistent emotes that last an infinite amount of time (as opposed to emotes that play an animation once and then return your character back to the default idle).

Similarly, zooming into first person mode and zooming back out will (client-side only) display your weapons and back piece. Those usually get hidden during emote animations.

If you swap weapons via keybind mid weapon idle animation, the animation will usually keep playing despite not fitting your newly swapped in weapon. This will often look silly, but can sometimes get you some cool poses too. Try out some combinations!

The technical side

So you're a master at staging the perfect shot, how do you get all of this into a neat little moving image?

To capture your gameplay, any recording software of your choice works. Windows 10 should by default come with the ability to record your game (press the Windows key + G to bring up the overlay; you can change keybinds for active and retroactive video recording & other things in the settings).

Once you've made your video file, the tricky part begins. It's kind of difficult to write a definite guide for this since programs and methods for making gifs vary so much. Different programs might compress your file differently, giving you different results in terms of file size and quality. Personally I've been using an ancient student version of Photoshop CS6 since the dawn of time, and it took some trial and error to figure out a good balance between quality and size.

About posting on tumblr:

tumblr currently allows a file size of 10MB max per gif (you can have several <10MB files per post).

The tumblr dashboard displays images at a width of 540px, so make this your gif's absolute minimum width if you want to ensure a crisp image.

Now for some subjective observations based on my experiences with how I create gifs. ! Important ! This is how my particular version of Photoshop handles sizes. You might get completely different results using any other software that compresses files differently.

Getting a good balance between image dimensions, quality and length of animation is hard if you're limited to a maximum file size of 10MB.

Your file size will depend on: The amount of frames your animation is using, the amount of colours, how much movement there is, and of course the dimensions of your image. Editing your image in terms of colours, saturation, contrast etc. can also impact the file size (it can go both ways).

Using a video recorded at 60 fps I can usually squeeze about (give or take) 3 seconds of animation into the gif before it gets too large (given a – by my standards – decent image quality). Take this into consideration when you pick your poses.

Things you can do to reduce file size, other than the two obvious solutions of simply making your animation shorter or image dimensions smaller:

Lower the amount of dither. This has a huge impact on file size in my experience. If you have many transparent effects (e.g. smoke, fog) or use strong depth-of-field filters in your image it will look bad if you go too low.

Limit the colour palette when you export your gif. Highly dependent on the scene, sometimes you can get away with reducing your colours by half, sometimes it will look atrocious.

In the end I don't think there's one formula that works for every situation. It really depends on what you're showing, so mix and match different methods to try and get the best compromise between quality and size!

And that's all I can think of right now! I hope that maybe one of these points could help someone :D

this is what he looks like (the bottom two images are picrews). personality wise i’d say he’s very defiant but also scared all the time. he’s a bloodthirsty vampire but he hates being a vampire and hates hurting people. u can draw him with a muzzle if u want, he’s really good at hypnosis and is always looking for ways to escape captivity (though he’s kinda bad at it). the wings are optional but he loves shapeshifting into his bat form and flying around :P

that’s it i think, if you can’t/don’t wanna draw him that’s fine, just thought i’d ask!

here it is! i hope i did him justice, it was a nice challenge to try to balance defiance and fear in his expression and body language, and ngl idk if it worked but i like how it turned out lol

I set up Nightshade and Glaze on my computer

so that future drawings I post on here will hopefully be protected against training AI models (following the announcement of Tumblr's deal with Midjourney and OpenAI), while also leaving behind a little treat, kind of like a mosquito bite ;).

But I know a lot of other artists in the Gravity Falls fandom don't have a computer that is capable of running Nightshade or Glaze. I think all of us should be able to fight against AI companies stealing our art to train these soulless image-generating machines. So, I'm going to try my best to Nightshade and/or Glaze pictures for anyone who wants them.

Unfortunately, I don't have an NVIDIA graphics card, so I have to run these on my CPU, so (jargon aside) it takes quite a while to run pictures through Nightshade and Glaze. I personally don't mind waiting to protect my/others art against AI, however I'm saying this just so that you know it may take a while for me to get your pictures back to you.

So, if you'd like me to Nightshade and/or Glaze your art, just send me a message on here telling me whether you want it Nightshaded, Glazed, or both, along with the picture(s). I don't know if Tumblr's AI deal also includes pictures sent in direct messages, but just in case, I'd suggest uploading the picture to something like Google Drive or Filebin and sending me the link. Plus, sending the original picture that way means that Tumblr won't compress it.

Once I get the pictures, I'll let you know before I run them through Nightshade and/or Glaze. If for whatever reason I cannot/decide not to Nightshade nor Glaze your pictures, I will tell you. When your pictures are ready, I'll upload them to a Filebin and share the link with you :).

I promise I won't share any pictures or art you send to me without your permission. Unless yoy give me permission to keep them, I will delete your pictures/art from my computer after giving them back to you once they are Nightshaded/Glazed.

(I hate asking for this but) please reblog to spread the message to anyone who might want to protect their art against AI but can't!

Gang, I just had a funny idea

What would happen if a bunch of people made AI Poison blogs with just like... art and writing that's all kind of bad and wrong. Old art you hate because it's wonky as all hell, paintings that are deliberately kind of fucked up, images with Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff jpg compression, writing that's My Immortal levels of literary. All very dilligently labelled with descriptions and tags saying something that's close-ish to what they are bad depictions of; "cute anime girl", "fantasy castle landscape" etc.

And then had those as ones with AI scraping turned on, and everyone agreed to reblog only those posts with accounts that have it turned on.

You know... if they're going to scrape Tumblr, make them wish they never had. Make it poisonous to their models. Also it sounds funny.

So I was thinking (as one does) and I just...

What if souyo were each others' romantic inverse? Like through how they love outwardly in platonic, familial and romantically compared to how they best receive or want to receive love

Yu, who never had even superficial friends, whose family abandonned him left right and center, and fears his ties are cut when he's no longer useful, feels like he's not worth anything inerently to those he holds dear.

Yosuke, who is essentially the back-up friend, who cant seem to get on the right foot with anybody, and up to this point hasnt been able to make anybody stay in touch, feels like he isnt going to be anybody's first choice, or their second, or even last.

But together, and for each other they give exactly what they need?

Sure, Yu may have fallen a little right at the start but their friendship and their relationship hold because he wakes up everyday and Chooses To Love Yosuke. Going out of his way to make sure he spends time with his best friend, that he notices when he needs a hand to hold. The way Yu loves everybody.

Yosuke has to of course go through his whole bit about learning to love himself enough to love outwardly and vice versa. But once he comes to terms with deserving friends (and also unlearning that homophobia/misogyny ofc) he finds that his friendship to lovers relationship with Yu is super easy. Because of course he can love his best friend in every way under the sun, he feels heart first and acts on it. There's no need to even think or choose. The same way Yosuke loves everyone

Do you use any other 🥝 rms of social media? Just wondering how long you have been on Tumblr and if this is your primary choice for social media, why? What does Tumblr give you that other places do not?

Short answer: For me, Tumblr seems to be the platform that is the least inconvenient. 

All social media sites seem to have some sort of baggage, particularly in the way each one handles its own policies for sure, but also in a number of different aspects as well. Facebook: Oakdale Grove has a Page [here] where I post photos and ritual event listings. Despite Facebook being a bustling megalopolis, my page doesn’t see that much traffic. In fact as of today it has 620 follows since 2012. I really dislike the feature of “invite John Doe to like your page,” it’s just smarmy. Facebook buries or removes all the best features to the point that I just post less and less so that I don’t have to deal with the hassle. I lost a lot of trust in Facebook in the 2014 News Feed Experiment, and I decreased my activity there in general thereafter. I also deleted the Facebook and Messenger apps from my phone because of feature creep and my custom settings getting reset with each update.

Instagram: I’ve never wanted an Instagram page. Pretty much all social media sites compress uploaded image files to take up less server space, but Instagram seems to downscale photos the most aggressively. Aside from that it’s really just not my thing. Every now and then I consider just signing up and getting started, but whenever I do, someone somewhere on the internet is griping about what they hate about Instagram, and it's always something different. It just reminds me of why I don't want to go near it.

Pinterest: Is Pinterest even a social media platform? It either needs to just go away or at least not be indexed by search engines. Do a search for "why I hate Pinterest" and the millions of search results are pretty much how I feel about the site. It’s basically imagery that lacks meaningful context.

Twitter: Microblogging is fun and effective for very short bits of information without being in your face (like TikTok). Among social media platforms, this is where I have my smallest following. Nevertheless, some people have found Oakdale Grove through this platform alone, so I keep using it.

Google Plus: Well it’s dead and gone, but it never was a social media powerhouse. I had a Plus page on druidry but pretty much abandoned it in under a year.

YouTube: This was once quite a social media haven. It was never perfect, but YouTube has fallen from grace repeatedly. Until 2011 or so, you could add users as friends, messaging was also easier then, and you also once had the power to delete subscribers that you didn’t want, including dead accounts. These days you can only block users you don’t like, but they can still subscribe to you. There’s also the latest YouTube policy enforcement fiasco which demonstrates that they are permitting hate speech to continue. I have several videos partially edited, but have just no drive to complete them.

TikTok: OMG this is a plague upon us all! I have friends who try to send me TikTok videos. Half of the time the thumbnail does not match up with the video that actually starts playing. And for some reason TikTok seems universally loud. It's social media ADHD on meth. As far as I can tell there is no way to mute videos, and no playback control other than pause. If a video doesn't loop, it loads and plays the next one, and I just want to take some ibuprofen for it. I managed to block TikTok in my computer's web browser and deleted the app from my phone months ago, so I can live in peace until someone starts streaming it in public. To be honest, I was really looking forward to the failed TikTok ban a few years ago.

Tumblr:

Overall, I really like the things you can do on the site. That said, Tumblr really shot themselves in the foot in December 2018. Tumblr had ample opportunity to purge just the porn bots, Nazis, and pedophiles, yet they haphazardly went after the whole NSFW community. A lot of regular Tumblr users left in protest after that, too. I’m still getting followed, liked, and reblogged by porn bots, and I have them to thank for reaching 1600 followers over the past few months. Bots aside, ultimately I feel that I do get a better response here than on other platforms.

As it pertains to Druidry, I created my blog on Tumblr in 2015 because of the lack of representation of druidry. The Witchblr community is huge here in my opinion, but there is far more gaming content in terms of the search tag Druid. The search results churn up almost exclusively role playing content such as D&D, World of Warcraft, and related fan art. That’s nice for the gaming community, but they have a disproportionate monopoly of content under the #Druid tag. Druidry and Druidism yield more relevant search results in terms of spirituality and paganism, but spiritual druidry is still not that well represented here. We are a fraction of a fraction.

Tumblr is also most popular among Millennials and Generation Z. The demographics of druidry are shifting, but I’ve heard (by hearsay) that most people tend to find druidry in their 40s or later, and that many of them didn’t even know it existed beforehand. As a mostly typical Millennial myself, and as someone who dove into druidry back at age 20, Tumblr seemed like a good place to set up a blog where I could help other young adults discover druidry, too. There have been plenty of times where older practitioners of druidry have said “I wish I would have found druidism sooner” or something to that effect. 

So that’s part of why I’m here, to help others gain in Awareness, and to help them discover something potentially meaningful while they’re still in their prime.

So... I’ve been a gif maker on this website for many years now, and I’m taking this opportunity to add my voice to the complaints about tumblr’s new proposal to convert gifs into mp4s. If you don’t know what this means: the conversion drastically reduces the quality of uploaded gifsets.

You can see it above. The picture on the left is a screencapture of the original gif. The picture on the right is a screencapture of the mp4 version. It has compression artifacts all over it, and is noticeably gummier and blurrier. (Be sure to click the above images to view them full-size, and then use the left/right arrow keys to toggle between them.)

Below are the two full versions, so you can play them back.

1) The gifv version. Note the very sharp appearance of the gif, and how you can see every individual pixel.

2) The mp4 version. Note the gumminess, and how most individual pixels are no longer distinguishable.

If I can make an analogy, it feels like a high-quality rip of a movie is being forcefully squished down into a YIFY-quality rip. It gets the job done... It looks okay... It’s serviceable... But it’s not what the creators intended. And if someone is going to spend hours making gifs (when I say “making gifs”, I’m also including all the time someone has spent learning how to make them super high quality in the first place, and where to find good sources, and the time they spend hunting down good sources in general), they are not going to be posting them if they end up looking like this.

Even if you’re not a gif maker or content creator yourself, this is going to reduce the amount of content you see on tumblr in the future. I for one will not be posting gifs if they all look like that.

So, you hate the compression proposal. What can you do?

The staff over at @engineering have made a post with some instructions on how to view gifs as mp4s, and they are requesting that people contact support and provide links to gifs that visibly lose quality. You don’t need to be a gif maker to do this, so please do this if you care about gif quality.

(That said, I’m certain all gifsets are going to be impacted no matter which ones you look at, including ones with flat, minimal colours, like cel-shaded animation. So I’m inclined to suspect, given the phrasing of the post, there will be minimal changes to the algorithm in the end.)

What I personally suggest, either instead of or in addition to the above, is that you contact support and request the ability for gif makers to add a toggle, so they can directly choose whether they want things uploaded as gifs or mp4s, thus allowing them to opt out of the compression entirely. This was mentioned in the above post and it may be one of the only ways to continue seeing high-quality gifs moving forward. So please consider contacting support and politely doing the above.

errand day.

it's funny how tumblr urges you with "go on, put anything." it's like a dare or something. totally psycho kind of. anyways errands were fine, basically, and i recorded two songs, but i made myself insane today anyways because i impulsively cut my hair to make my bangs "right" and i think they're fine and don't look any different actually except they might sit a little better but i miss my big hair and i should just not touch my hair until it's getting to where i want it to be again and then finally do that stuff and i feel ugly still and so it's all combining to make me really really fucked up or something and i'm basically so stupid that it hurts.

i like kept cutting tiny bits and shearing pieces off just to get like, it to fan out more and i got back in the shower like 3 times so i could re-blow dry my hair over and over and i hate being obsessive like this but i literally c an't let anything go if it feels wrong i need to keep doing it until it's right and i don't want to be like this anymore but my own life feels like a plastic bag on my face that i am trying to adjust just enough so i can breathe but not get rid of entirely, because the burden is necessary sometimes or something, and like, i keep going to the bathroom to check if my bangs look fine and if my hair looks fine and i can't stop myself and it makes me anxious and that makes my body temperature rise and it's so miserable. i am so hot even though it's like only 77 degrees in here. i am feeling slightly on fire and i can feel dampness on my forehead. and that will kind of make my bangs look worse because sweat=greasy greasy=hair sticking together and stuff. i think everyone knows. it's just awful. it's like a downward slope that's going to make me want to light myself on fire.

i want to feel like my hair is a giant blanket or scarf resting on my head, something luxuriant, or something. or at least to feel that one time out of the month, it would be really really nice. i'm really going to make myself feel awful if i keep talking about it but i don't know what else to talk about. today was good in every way i think and i'm just like this. no one really hates me except people who are bound to hate people like me, everyone who talked to me today was nice to me.

i wish i could feel like this again, i guess is how i feel.

at least all this obsessing over hair gave me an image for lyrics, so now one of the 2 min songs that had nothing has something, probably needs to be edited and fleshed out some but that's pretty good, and it won't need to be screamy the whole way through.

anyways, finally listening to a bunch of the songs, especially the more hardcore ones that are a bit older, their mixes are still kinda fucked but i think i definitely know what's wrong with them, they're a little boomy in the guitars meaning the low mids are maybe way too boosted, and the vocals could use more high end and compression, i should also see about lowering the guitars and maybe replacing them with some of the new ones i have but also, these are songs where low-mid heavy guitars are necessary and the newer songs are a bit, i dunno, sharper, i think the guitars here in some of these can sound fine they just need some brightening and re-eqing. otherwise i do have good foundations. some of the songs also need guitars placed in the left channel, i do think it would be good to have something different happening there, maybe plays on the main riff, weird alterations, someone getting really dissonant or something.

in the laundromat, i just sat and listened to orchid and stared into space, i didn't read like i wanted to, i just wanted to not exist kinda and staring into space helped with that, i also dim-wittedly put the clothes that needed drying into a broken dryer so i had to take them out and put them in a working one. #genius

okay, that's enough of today. i really want to shower already and sit and not be sweaty and hopefully get all this dumb stuff off my mind.

I don't want to be the Disney Defender(tm) but in the version of that image that hasn't been eaten by two social media compression algorithms the dress looks..... slightly better? the bodice is clearly brocade, the slashes in the puffed sleeves are very clearly slashes, the bodice might well be a separate piece, and the lacing on it looks functional, which means it might just be loose in that image and could theoretically cinch up some. there's also a white strand cord thing poking out the top of the bodice that could possibly belong to a corset or stays? or I could be wrong about that.

I still hate the cuffs on the sleeves and also the blue and yellow are like. overpoweringly, disgustingly loud. do not like that at all. but then belle's ballgown is also overpoweringly, disgustingly yellow (among its many other crimes) so I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

I don't care about this but also I have insomnia and also also it ate my brain a little so here, tumblr, have my revised opinion: the dress might possibly end up looking like a team of costumers made it instead of coming off a party city rack. maybe. but the movie will still be okay at best and also fuck disney.
