Now, we all know these kiddos had a bad time.

They were all abused in different ways, neglected, put down to the lowest point they could be.

Junko was like a light at the end of the tunnel for them, a savior - someone who cared, someone who they could trust, someone who loved them. But it was all lies.

She didn't care.

They couldn't trust her.

She didn't love them.

But then, you came around. At first, they thought you were like every other demon; evil, cold and uncaring.

And yet, there was this warmth radiating off of you... Almost like another light they could chase to get to true joy.

After Komaru and Toko defeated each of them, they felt lost. What were they supposed to do now that their empire has failed? Were the adults going to punish them, by abusing and taking advantage of them even further?

The group wandered the streets of Towa City, alone, hiding from every adult they could see and fending for themselves.

However, they stumbled upon you and Komaru. You two have been actively looking for them after finding out they survived.

But the reason why you were looking for them, was pretty unexpected.

You wanted to take them in as your own. They were just kids after all, no matter how much they tried to make themselves seem bigger. You wanted to help them, teach them that not everyone will hurt them, because they deserve to be loved like any other child does.

And so, they went with you. Very reluctantly mind you, but they didn't have much of a choice.

And as time went on, they opened up to you, one by one. And soon, you guys became like a happy family.

Somewhat dysfunctional, but still happy family.

Ok so, origin story's out of the way, now let's get in a bit deeper-

Parenting the Warriors is pretty hard- they each have something about themselves that you need to keep in mind.

And besides, taking care of 5 children wouldn't be easy even if they weren't traumatized-

You have to be patient, warm and kind to them, and to you that's no problem!

I would imagine Masaru would be the first to let his guard down around you, because he could tell that you weren't a bad person from the start.

He would start to admire you greatly, seeing you as the only cool adult around!!

He's always trying to impress you or get your attention because of that. And you always give him praise, telling him he's the most awesome kiddo ever!!

He always gets a bit bashful when you do, scratching his head as an "awhh, shucks!", escaping his lips.

He's very fond of you! He wants to do the things you do, like trying out your hobbies or imitating your mannerisms. He just wants to be as cool as you are.

While it is cute, you have to teach him that he's only the best when he's himself!

Kotoko was probably the second to open up. The first thing she noticed is that you never, ever used her trigger word in a sentence, not even on accident. You always used words like "soft", "tender" or "mallow", maybe even "delicate".

Like Masaru, her initial gut reaction always told her you were a good person, but the walls she had built up just couldn't let you in right away.

And when she does get comfortable, she becomes super clingy. She's almost as fond of you as Masaru is, honestly-

She always goes to you for any sort of help. She feels like you're the only person she can trust 100%, whether it be with her feelings or some other problem.

You're like- the only person who she's super nice to all the time. She used to be like that with Monaca, until you took them in.

Actually, speaking of that, they completely stopped literally worshipping Monaca's every move once you entered their lives.

Now, next up is Jataro. He initially thought you hated his every move, and that you only took him in because of pity.

But, you were proving him wrong every day. Going out of your way to talk to him, being so incredibly kind that it made his heart hurt.

You always help him out with his art! He loves when you sit down and paint, sculpt or draw with him, even if you're not artistic yourself. He feels like he's wanted, and all of that self-hatred almost completely washes away.

The biggest moment was when you finally convinced him to take off his mask. And when he did, you could tell he was way happier.

You two burned the mask together, leaving that part of his life behind you and turning over a new leaf.

And because of your influence, the rest of the kids are way nicer to him as well now!

Nagisa was the fourth one to take his guard down.

He saw how much Masaru, Kotoko and Jataro trusted you, and after observing you further, he began to see why.

He was always very distant from you, and you respected that. So, you were pleasantly surprised when he suddenly started going out of his way to help you, talk to you or spend time with you. However, you never questioned it, which made him relieved.

It's like you two silently agreed that you were cool with eachother.

He's very mature for his age, so he's the first one to try and help you with regular day-to-day tasks, even without you asking for said help.

Mans over here about to start doing your taxes HDHDH-

You always tell him to chill out, but he insists. He knows how much trouble he and his adoptive siblings are making for you, and it's his own way of thanking you.

Now, Monaca's a little interesting.

At first she was only pretending to care about you, like she did with the rest of the Warriors, but after a while she genuinely grew to love both you and her siblings.

She doesn't like the fact she cares one bit, but she can't help it.

She still has very manipulative tendencies, but you always see through them and her lies. You call her out on it, but never berate her.

She's very kiss ass-y, I guess?? Always complimenting you for the smallest reasons and calling you sweet nicknames.

She sometimes just wants to make you mess up to try and get herself to stop caring-

Like whenever a problem comes up, she always goes, "S/O can fix it!😌🙏 Our (affectionate parental term) dearest can do anything!🥰💞" and the rest of the kids are like "yah!!💖💕" because they love and support you while you're just there like🧍

Because no you can't rebuild the economy do you look like bob the fucking builder-

AnywaY their parents are already dead, so you guys beat up H*ji instead. :)

The Writing In Apex Kinda Sucks And Also They Use Ship Bait As A Plot Device I Hate It Here

a stupid essay/rant encouraged by @zombiegloss that originally started as a youtube video script so if its like. weird at points. this was intended to be a verbal rant SNZISKSIA

basically i'm gonna talk abt the caustic-wattson-crypto relationship drama and how i think it was mishandled and how much the writers kind of Suck because i Can

you are free to disagree with me on any of my points and think that this aspect of the story was handled well, this is just my opinion, and i'd love to hear your thoughts and counterpoints !

first, addressing some things:

i know this is a battle royale and not necessarily a story-based game, so i can’t expect it to have masterful witcher-style writing.

but with the direction the game seems to be going; putting quests, evolving interactions, and comics in the game, plus coming out with a lore book and hinting at something bigger in the future, i think it’s fair to criticize it for lackluster writing, especially since what i’m criticizing has been something present since Apex’s story technically began.

secondly, i am not a professional writer. i’m a high schooler who writes as a hobby. i don’t have the decades of experience that some of the apex writers do, and i can’t claim to be a better writer than they are--but i also don’t have to be a five-star chef to realize that something tastes bad. when i critique something and give suggestions, i am not saying i could’ve done it better. i’m just bringing up what i think could have worked.

third, before i upset anyone , when i say a relationship is badly written, i’m not telling you that you can’t ship it or that your ship sucks. i’ll briefly touch on the shipping aspect of this and how it’s a detriment to the story but Ye

okay, so with that out of the way, let us Begin

relationships are often the emotional core of a story, and how strong your reaction is to conflict in these relationships depends on how the story sets them up. if you want the audience to care about these characters and what they go through, you need to develop them and establish the type of relationship they have well. it’s why so many people cried in the last episode of telltale’s the walking dead. you’ve spent roughly 12 hours bonding with clementine and protecting her, and your relationship with her is part of several story beats as well as character beats for lee.

when these two characters’ relationship reaches its peak at the end of the game, it’s powerful, and it’s emotional. you care. you feel something, and the fact that you have to choose what to do to lee only makes it more gut-wrenching.

now, the walking dead is entirely story-based and especially character-driven, so it may be unfair to compare it to apex, but i just wanted to lay the groundwork down for what i think is a strong relationship that makes you feel something when conflict arrives, in this case the conflict being lee getting bit and clementine having to decide his fate.

the broken ghost in general is kind of not-good sometimes, tom casiello previously wrote for soap operas and you can really, REALLY tell sometimes.

this story feels like it should’ve taken place a little later, and that we should’ve had a season to actually set up the characters and their relationships, but that’s a story for another day.

to put it bluntly, the set-up for the crypto, wattson, and caustic conflict is done poorly. for caustic and wattson's relationship it’s a little better, but not by much.

wattson and caustic having a relationship was hinted at in season 2, when her lore indicated that caustic was among one of the Legends who comforted her after her father died. In season four lore materials posted on Twitter, an email from Jacob Young states that Caustic is acting paternal towards Wattson. In season five, interactions get added to the Game, and this is the first time we actually see their relationship in action, as they have unique revive voice lines for each other. in the quests, when wattson is injured, caustic lashes out at loba and attacks her out of what seems to be anger at wattson’s current state.

Side Note this plot point was really stupid and done for cheap drama because she literally wakes up like two chapters later and they don’t even give her anything to say it’s just suddenly oh yeah crypto and wattson are working together. the same exact injury thing happens to octane later but nobody gIVES A SHIT because again, it’s just cheap soap opera drama.

their relationship might seem a little bit sudden for anyone who wasn’t on top of twitter lore drops, but like, it’s okay, i guess. i’ll give it the slightest credit for at least establishing something between the two in terms of voice lines and stuff, even if for some it might seem like it came out of nowhere.

what did come out of nowhere, though, was crypto and wattson’s friendship. in the quests, crypto and wattson are tasked with rebuilding the broken ghost because of their respective skills, and they’re seen talking in chapter six while they work on it. we’re not really given a clear timeline on how long the story in the broken ghost is, but i think it takes about a week, maybe.

unlike wattson and caustic, their relationship has been given absolutely zero material to work with before now, not even a passing glance in the trailers--which is a little weird considering crypto took down the repulsor tower and destroyed wattson’s home, but. Whatever.

tl dr of the chapter: crypto and wattson talk to each other while doing nerd shit, crypto laughs at wattson’s bad pun, and then suddenly they’re BESTIEEEES, until a couple dozen lines later in the same chapter. then they’re Not.

crypto’s drone gets hacked by revenant while everyone was kind of on edge after the reveal of a spy in their midst, he gets framed as the spy by caustic, anddddd wattson gets upset.

before i get into how dumb this storyline is, i’m gonna talk about the set-up to this conflict.

we have been given no reason to believe that these characters have ever talked to each other, and quite frankly, their friendship doesn’t really make sense.

ignoring the fact that crypto destroyed wattson’s home--which she probably doesn’t know about, so that’s forgiven for now--crypto is a paranoid guy. in the lore book he makes people stand on fucking footprints in his house so he can scan them for weapons and listening devices, and he apparently doesn’t stick around much after the games and nobody knows anything about him because he doesn’t talk to them.

a key part of crypto’s story is the fact that he is undercover and afraid of anyone finding out anything about him ever. him becoming friends with wattson kind of comes out of the blue, and we’re not even given a reason as to why they supposedly became close in the first place. i would kind of understand if like, maybe he draws parallels with her and mila in his mind and it makes him open up a little more, but that doesn’t happen. he just laughs at her joke and suddenly they’re friends.

maybe they’re trying to go for this ‘wattson can become friends with anybody’ angle, kind of hinted at with caustic but not really we’ll get into that, but that also? kind of doesn’t make sense since so many of her voice lines straight-up say she doesn’t understand people and electricity is more her thing, but honestly, she also does have those really friendly elements in her voice lines too, so its not as egregious as what they did with crypto.

their sudden out-of-the-blue friendship would’ve been fine if they spent a little more time fleshing it out, and giving us something to work with, but instead, the story immediately tries to rip it apart and frame it as this grand conflict where crypto is framed as the mole, crypto then accuses caustic, and wattson feels betrayed.

except it doesn’t really work, because we don’t give a shit. for several reasons.

one: crypto and wattson became friends and then ended their friendship in the same exact chapter. they did not speak to each other onscreen until this chapter began, you can read the entire quest on the wiki and see for yourself that their interactions up until that point were nonexistent aside from mentions in the narration that they were building something together.

the reason wattson feels betrayed is kind of stupid too. why does she really care that much if one of them betrayed loba? nobody else really cared about the fact that one of them was a spy, in fact, nobody even seems to like loba that much, and they just found out that loba’s been lying to them this whole time, and wattson was conscious for that conversation and had a speaking line, so she’s fully aware of the situation.

maybe it’s just like, the idea that one of them lied, but that’s still kind of a weak reason.

this entire betrayal thing is just dumb, and it gets even worse when you realize that there could have been an actual legitimate reason for wattson to feel betrayed by crypto--even if it still would’ve come across as weak conflict because of their newly established friendship, it would’ve made more sense than this.

Crypto destroyed Wattson’s home. He took down the tower and then all the flyers and stuff invaded Kings Canyon and made it their bitch. Not only that, but Wattson considers the Syndicate her family. The Syndicate are the very people who framed Crypto for murder and he’s trying to take them down.

They could’ve set up actual conflict with these things, and it almost seemed like they would, because Caustic briefly brings up that Crypto could be working with Revenant because he has something against the Syndicate but then that doesn’t really go anywhere and we’re just back to Wattson feeling betrayed because either Crypto or Caustic was a spy and she doesn’t know who.

Weak conflict could’ve been made better by a strong relationship and a weak relationship could’ve still been interesting with strong conflict, but both the relationship between Crypto and Wattson and the conflict that drives them splitting up as friends were really weak and didn’t make much sense.

It would’ve been ten times more interesting if Wattson found out Crypto ruined her home, the arena she grew up in, and was now participating in the Games to take out the people she regards as her family. That’s where her distrust could’ve manifested and conflict could’ve began, but instead it was the stupid betraying loba thing. why do you care. you just started talking to this guy like 2 hours ago.

also caustic’s whole reason for framing crypto feels stupid as fuck. he didn’t just frame crypto randomly, he framed him specifically because he doesn't want him to influence wattsob because he likes her Big Brain, but this is the FIRST time we have seen those two interact.

what influence is he talking about? wraith and wattson have been shown to be friendly with each other in the trailers, according to tom’s tweets, and in the story too so why doesn’t he frame her? at this point the audience had slightly more build-up for those two’s relationship than crypto and wattson and a betrayal storyline would’ve felt a little more deserved if still weak.

this is the point where i briefly want to touch upon shipping, and the fact that part of this conflict feels driven by shipbait.

aside from their relationship coming out of nowhere and the writers trying to make the stakes seem high and deeply emotional to the characters involved (despite this essentially being the first time they’ve ever interacted) tom casiello literally addresses shippers in a tweet regarding chapter seven, and as the story between these characters progresses, it becomes clear to me, at least that the crypto-wattson thing is just bait for shippers, and it’s lazy.

it’s easy to get away with giving your characters little to no relationship development if you’re just counting on shippers to do the heavy mental lifting for you

why should i put any effort into making this relationship seem believable? people are going to see a young guy and a young girl having bare minimum interaction and assume there’s romantic interest! then i don’t have to do any work, see look, it’s a ready-made relationship wrapped in a bow for me! all that’s left for me to do is give them conflict so i can keep teasing shippers with lines like ‘you never deserved her’!

i think it’s reasonable for me to suspect shipbait, since tom casiello likes doing darksparks shipbait on twitter, and i’m like, eighty percent sure mirage and bloodhound suddenly being childhood friends in the book is shipbait too, because these characters were the number one ship in apex for a long time despite little to no interaction, and then all of a sudden in the lore book they’re childhood friends despite this literally never being mentioned before?

like bloodhound is set up to be mysterious and nobody knows what they look like, or where they’re from, or who their family is--except for mirage Apparently, who played with them when he was a kid on their home planet, and has seen them with their mask off, because bloodhound did not wear a mask when their parents were still alive.

its weird.

i’m pretty sure they’ve said somewhere they were working on this book before apex even came out, so i could just be completely wrong and they always planned for mirage and bloodhound to know each other, but if that’s the case, why did they never mention it like they did octane and lifeline?

i refuse to believe MIRAGE never brought it up either like ‘heeeeyy bloodhound remember when we used to throw eggs at our parents lab haha wanna go do to that to bangalore’s room’

ANYWAYS I GOT OFF TOPIC. POINT IS, shipping is a detriment to the story because the writers don’t feel like they actually have to put any work into establishing or developing the relationship between characters when they know the community’s just going to do it for them anyways, and that they can put in shipbait and it’s fine and it makes sense when it really doesn’t.

imagine watching captain america civil war after not seeing a single other marvel movie.

why would you care about the avengers splitting up or tony and steve butting heads or steve’s commitment to bucky? you wouldn’t care, at least not as much as someone who’s seen all the movies and knows the relationship between the characters and why the sokovia accords exist in the first place. you don’t have context and you don’t have any reason to be emotionally invested in these characters’ relationship.

this feels like that. the writers tried to squeeze this relationship and stuff into a single chapter and we don’t fucking care unless we were already invested in the idea of their relationship (shippers) because we barely spent any time with it.

so to summarize this little section, the set-up of this storyline Kinda Sucks! crypto and wattson barely seem to know each other, because we the audience barely saw them together and the writers are relying on shipbait in place of a relationship.

wattson and caustic are a little better but not great, but the conflict is stupid and it only gets stupider.

moving onto summarizing the rest of the broken ghost, gibraltar and caustic talk, caustic LITERALLY confesses to being the mole and says he framed crypto so he couldn’t corrupt wattson and to appear innocent because his identity was suspected, then that wraps up the season storyline.

season six begins with new voice lines, where wattson has had enough of crypto and caustic’s shit and is all passive-aggressive and going ‘this doesn’t change anything’. she has to decide who to trust, and how to figure out The Truth for herself because she’s not a little girl anymore. crypto and caustic are both trying to convince her they’re innocent and it creates some interesting conflict.

just kidding. it’s terrible conflict. you want to know why?

BECAUSE GIBRALTAR TRIED TO TELL HER THE TRUTH, RIGHT AFTER THE SEASON 5 QUEST HAPPENED, AND SHE LITERALLY REFUSED TO HEAR IT.

LIKE THERE’S A SEASON 6 LOADING SCREEN WHERE HE’S TELLING EVERYONE THE TRUTH ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED, AND WHEN HE GETS TO WATTSON AND IS LIKE HEY I KNOW WHO THE MOLE WAS AND WHY THEY DID IT, SHE JUST GOES i dont wanna hear it. i need to think

IF YOU WANT THE TRUTH WHY ARE YOU REFUSING TO HEAR IT

SHE SPENDS ALMOST TWO ENTIRE SEASONS MAD AT CRYPTO FOR SOMETHING HE DIDN’T DO BECAUSE SHE TOLD GIBRALTAR TO FUCK OFF WHEN HE TRIED TO TELL HER WHAT HAPPENED

ITS SO DUMB

i think it was towards the end of season 6 or the beginning of season 7 where apex posted this picture of wattson asleep at her desk where she has a letter from gibraltar on it that looks like it tells her the truth, so she knows now, she knows what happened, but NOW her issue is the fact that she doesn’t know anything about crypto.

WHAT THE FUCK. WHAT IS YOUR GODDAMN DAMAGE. YOU DON’T KNOW SHIT ABOUT BLOODHOUND EITHER ARE YOU THIS UPSET WITH BLOODHOUND TOO?? HAVE YOU EVER TALKED TO PATHFINDER. DO YOU HATE PATHFINDER TOO

oh but she was friends with crypto and now she’s mad that he lied to her EXCEPT THEIR RELATIONSHIP WASN’T BUILT UP WELL SO IT JUST FEELS STUPID. THEY SPENT LONGER BEING NOT-FRIENDS THAN THEY SPENT BEING FRIENDS. THEY BECAME FRIENDS IN ONE CHAPTER AND THEN IMMEDIATELY AT THE END OF THAT CHAPTER THEIR FRIENDSHIP ENDED AND THEN WATTSON SPENT LIKE 2 SEASONS MAD AT HIM FOR SOMETHING HE DIDN’T DO .

AND THE WRITERS TRIED TO RECTIFY THIS BY SAYING OH SHE’S NOT MAD ABOUT THE TRAITOR THING SHE’S MAD BECAUSE SHE DOESN’T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT HIM AND IT’S LIKE WHY THE FUCK DID YOU NOT MAKE THAT CLEAR WHY DOES SHE SAY ‘IT DOESN’T CHANGE WHAT YOU DID’ IN HER VOICE LINES WHY DOES SHE CALL HIM A TRAITOR IF HER CONFLICT WAS HER NOT KNOWING MUCH ABOUT HIM . WHAT DID HE DO.

HE JUST STOOD THERE AND LAUGHED AT HER JOKE AND THEN HE GOT FRAMED AND THEN THAT WAS THE END OF THE CHAPTER AND NOW SHES SUDDENLY LIKE IM ACTUALLY MAD BECAUSE YOURE A LIAR AND I CANT TRUST YOU EVEN THOUGH I NOW KNOW YOU WERE FRAMED I STILL DO NOT LIKE YOU AND HES LIKE YEAH THATS MY FAULT

The Caustic voicelines are stupid too, again his reason for framing Crypto was stupid and a lot of his voicelines just seem to be that shipbait thing again but like from the angle of overprotective dad who doesn’t like the new boyfriend. it’s stupid but not as egeregious as this next part which is

crypto telling wattson his identity.

CRYPTO was framed for MURDER and is paranoid and can’t trust anyone and doesn’t talk to anyone and the last time he did talk to someone he got framed for Another thing and the person he was talking to turned her back on him and actively refused to know the truth for like 2 seasons and then he went This Is Fine I Can Tell Her My Identity

the stupidest update to this storyline was crypto telling wattson the truth

why did they do it on the dropship where there are presumably syndicate members and other legends around.

why didn’t he scan wattson for listening devices like he did for pathfinder in the book.

why is he telling her his identity when he knows she has very close ties to the people that FRAMED HIM for MURDER. Does he trust her that much? WHY? They spoke to each other in a chapter and then spent two seasons not talking to each other beyond passive-aggressive BS. why are you so fucking stupid taejoon

their relationship was so poorly set-up that even if the writers maybe intended for them to come across as close friends who had spent weeks bonding, it really feels like they became friends in a single conversation, had a falling out, and now crypto suddenly trusts her with his identity after an undetermined amount of time because he wants to be friends again.

that does not make SENSE this conflict feels contrived AS FUCK and the resolution feels even worse and unearned UGGGHHHH

it honestly comes across as crypto feeling desperate for friendship, and maybe this would’ve worked better if that’s the angle they played it as.

he’s been alone for roughly two years, and just wants a friend, and he’s honestly so lonely he just breaks down to the first person who’s really talked to him. it could’ve been an interesting little part of his character, and they could've gone into depth about how much this situation has affected him, but that’s not what they’re doing. he’s still paranoid and anxious and doesn’t trust anyone, except for wattson, because the plot needs him to or else there won’t be any stupid soap opera drama.

and to rub salt in the wound, wattson’s new voice lines with caustic have him telling her that she forgave crypto.

WHAT ARE YOU FORGIVING HIM FOR. ARE YOU FORGIVING HIM FOR BEING FRAMED? WHY DID HE HAVE TO APOLOGIZE TO YOU WHEN YOU WERE THE ONE WHO REFUSED TO HEAR THE TRUTH?

did the conversation just go hey my real name is taejoon park and something bad happened to me and she went aight i forgive you WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT

Caustic’s new voice lines to Crypto where he’s like ‘what did you tell her’--YOU TOLD GIBRALTAR STRAIGHT-UP YOUR EVIL MASTER PLAN LIKE A SUPERVILLAIN AND NOW YOU’RE SURPRISED WATTSON AND CRYPTO ARE ON GOOD TERMS NOW?!

this is at like ten pages already so i’m going to just try and wrap this up quickly.

it’s frustrating seeing this storyline play out when there are actually good relationships and storylines written into apex. i’m kind of getting tired of the loba and revenant conflict, but we at least had set-up to it in the form of a few animated shorts and it doesn’t play out as stupidly as this story does. bangalore and loba’s friendship is actually developed well, even if the point between the end of season 5 and season 6 where they suddenly talk like each other feels like it could’ve used a little more.

where crypto and wattson having an established friendship in the broken ghost failed, lifeline and octane’s established friendship works because we’ve been told since octane’s release they were childhood friends and given lore materials that indicate they’ve known each other for a very long time.

apex wants this storyline between crypto and wattson and caustic to feel dramatic and tense and ultimately rewarding when crypto and wattson did become friends for real and stuff, but instead it just comes across as hollow and empty.

there’s nothing there. it’s a case of tell, don’t show, and it looks like this stupid conflict is gonna keep going for another couple of seasons at this rate.

what are 3 flaws your character has?

first and foremost, johan is one stubborn little shit. if he wants something done a certain way, he’s not going to let up until he gets his way and you can bet he’ll make a big song and dance about it ‘til it happens. he’s also rather blunt, often saying things how it is but not quite realising there could be a nicer way of saying it so that it doesn’t hurt someone’s feelings. lastly, he’s honestly just really annoying sometimes. he’ll bug you and pick at you, wind you up and tease you but sometimes doesn’t understand when he might’ve crossed a line.

what are 3 insecurities your character has?

the biggest is his appearance, moreso with regards to his missing limb. he’s still adjusting to life as an amputee and is often on the receiving end of stares which makes him self-conscious, even if there’s no harm there. he’s received plenty of comments that are negative which only solidifies his insecurity, so much to a point where despite being in pain, he won’t take his prosthesis off at home even around holden, his roommate, because he fears a comment will be made. the next biggest one is definitely his virginity -- back home, the man was so career driven that he never truly explored his sexuality, never had that sexual awakening as he was too busy buried in books and swimming in the damn ocean to think about it. but now he’s reaching thirty and he feels like a failure of sorts, but all he really wants is to find someone that he can put his complete trust into so he can be intimate with them. honestly, it’s probably why he’s so tightly wound up. another insecurity he has is to do with his voice -- well, his accent, mainly. he knows it’s different and a little hard to understand, plus he’s lost count how many times people mimic him and it pisses him off big time.

what is something your character is most proud of?

being alive? honestly, johan’s grateful he managed to come out the other side of his accident. not from the injury per say so much as his mental state; he sunk into a dark depression upon awakening and adjusting to this disability he now has. there were times when he wanted to give up as the physiotherapy was just too gruelling to deal with, but he continued to fight and work on rebuilding his strength up and he’s glad he had the guts to leave home and just explore what else is out there.

where does your character feel most comfortable?

swimming in the ocean. he’d be out there for hours if he could.

where do they feel most uncomfortable?

anywhere that’s too crowded because he’s cautious of himself and of being knocked over.

what are some hobbies of your character?

he taught himself to play guitar from his his hospital bed and he still carries on with it now, he’ll have a little sing song too and has tried his hand at writing songs but never to be performed. he’s not interested in that lifestyle so much. as he’s unable to swim until he’s built up more strength, another hobby he’s found is something he likes to call ‘watching sad films to see what makes me cry the most’.

are they more extroverted or introverted?

johan’s probably more extroverted, really. though he isn’t one for going out out often, he loves to be social and goes crazy if he has to be by himself for too long.

does your character have any scars, how did they get them?

well, the obvious would be the scars on his residual limb from where the amputation was. he also has several scars littered across his lower back, remaining thigh, his arms and his other leg from the accident (he’ll never refer to it as an attack, he’s adamant of it being a misunderstanding) due to the razor-sharp denticles on the shark’s skin causing lacerations.

what is/was your character’s relationship like with their mother and/or father?

johan is definitely lucky to have two caring parents who have supported him from day one. there’s never been an argument or disagreement between them and since arriving in the states, he has a video call with them at least once a week to check in. he really couldn’t ask for more and he misses them terribly.

have they any siblings, if so, do they get along?

he doesn’t! it’s like his parents knew that he was going to be enough of a handful as it is.

has your character ever had a reoccuring dream or nightmare, what happened?

surprisingly not. johan’s a fairly deep sleeper and rarely remembers his dreams, if he does it’s usually something really mundane. he has been known to talk in his sleep however but it’s always in afrikaans.

what qualities does your character look for in a friend?

someone patient, kind, understanding and willing to just have fun with him.

what qualities does your character dislike in others?

messiness, being obnoxious, disorganised, too cocky for their own good.

how does your character react to confrontation - are they a fight or flight?

johan is a definite flight -- he’ll avoid confrontation like the plague, if it’s physical, anyway. he’ll give a verbal fight if it means proving that he’s right.

how easy or difficult does your character find it to say ‘i love you’ to someone?

johan has never been in love before so this isn’t something he would know of just yet, but he likes to believe in the fairytales and disney movies that when you know you know and he’d say it easy enough so long as he believed it.

have they ever said ‘i love you’ without meaning it?

never! because he’s never said it, haha.

what does your character believe will happen to them after they die? are they in fear of this belief?

johan believes in some sort of afterlife but he’s not sure what exactly. really, he just tells himself there’s something else after for a bit of comfort.

how does your character react toward children?

he adores kids. he’d love to be a father one day and he knows his time is running out, really. but at the aquarium he loves giving talks to the young kids, answering their questions and telling them stories. he’ll always offer himself up for any babysitting duties too.

does your character have any fears? if so, what are they?

yeah, mayonnaise. it’s not so much a fear as it just really, really puts him off and makes his palms go sweaty and he feels sick just thinking about it. he’s also a big baby when it comes to any sort of reptile, especially lizards.

if your character could relive one memory they have, which would they choose and why?

his first freedive with a great white; there was something just so spectacular about swimming side by side the ocean’s greatest predator and it being so serene. he’s done numerous dives since during his time as a shark biologist but the first will always be the one he remembers of most fondly.

It’s a reference to both Plumeria the team skull character (since Plumeria is a “big sister” type character and fills a similar role as your girl here) and Purl Ridges, a type of stitch used in knitting, which is one of your girl’s hobbies!

Age: around the alternian equivalent of 17 or 18

Hmm. Bayonets are usually associated with soldiers. I think if you wanted to fit her theme as a criminal, you’d use spraypaintkind, or maybe even Batkind. This works both for the criminal image And a pun on the fact that Plumeria likes to use Golbats/Crobats, lol.

Beee careful here, because stuff like “it’s ya boy” isn’t “gangster terms,” it’s just African American Vernacular English. AAVE already gets associated strongly with criminality and it’s a bad & racist media stereotype. Hussie himself is very guilty of this brand of racism, and it’s something we don’t wanna emulate! I think you can still use it, you just have to tread cautiously and make sure you understand the meanings and aren’t just using it as a Funny Prop, because it’s a dialect of english, not just a bunch of nonsense to be thrown around for goofs.

It’s possible to have “tough” and “criminal” character w/o relying on these stereotypes, too. You could just have her talk rough in general or use a lot of insults in a loving way (like australians love to do) instead. Or you could do something really stupid and fun like making her use archaic criminal slang.

I was confused at first, but y’know what I think his loving and hopeful nature does vibe with Melaki’s hope title later, so I’ll let it slide. Purples do have aquatic mammals for lusii, though, so you gotta make this like, a version of Falkor that can also dive underwater. Maybe with a fishtail like Gamzee’s lusus. Mermaid Falkor.

Personality: melaki is a gangster girl, who goes around committing dumb crimes with her fellow clowns. She follows her gut instinct a lot, almost too much. To the point of injury in some situations(I.E. that leg of hers). Shes usually the momma person of the group, making sure her crime friends make it out alright. You could probably compare her to a team skull member or smthn

I like that a lot! I definitely drew on the Team Skull vibe a little more than you probably predicted, haha. Criminal with a heart of gold is a trope I enjoy, so I love her. Is she part of the Clown Cult or is that not much of a thing on Demokratia? You should ask about that if you haven’t, because juggalo culture could also be a good informer for researching for how to play this character!

Interests: trolling, vandalism, stealing, knitting, musicals (usually keeps those last 2 to herself)

Understander of hope… Knower of hope. I don’t know if I think that’s quite fitting for someone as get-up-and-go as her. Fighty, energized, definitely not the sit back and learn type. If you want her to Learn to be a little more passive, this could probably fit, but as it stands I think she’s probably a Maid of Hope, mmmaybe a Sylph.

Why faux fur I’m laughing. I’m sure there’s a reason… But all I can think of is vans with shag carpet in the back. Land of Shag Carpet and Chapels. That’s mostly a joke suggestion, but either way, love this.

I Fully Agree that she’s definitely a prospit player but why’ve you sprited her in a dersite outfit– nevermind I won’t question it.

Onto design!:

Your submitted picture was a little too blurry to work on directly, so I had to rebuild her. I wanted to make her makeup a little more unique, so I based it off of Plumeria’s eye look with the harsh wing and then the greys and whites around the eye. And then I made the outer grey look like Guzma’s interestingly shaped glasses. Everything else was kept largely the same. I gave her same horns, because assymetrical horns always just feel a little weird w/o design reason. And I added a little arrow to her sign as a reference to Caprittanius, the purple/void/prospit sign.

A couple of months ago I introduced you to a UK company that converts classic cars to electric propulsion. The company, named eDub Services, was founded by a young man named Kit Lacey, and since my piece on his business, he and I have been in conversation about this fascinating field of entrepreneurship. I have an old Volvo 240 in my garage that one day will need an electric drivetrain for sure, so getting acquainted with someone like Kit is a good bet.

I talked to Kit about the concrete and chronological information on his rebuilds and how we could make it accessible for all of us curious about how such projects can be carried out. This series is the result, in Kit Lacey’s own words. So let’s begin at the beginning.

Part 1 — Finding The First Donor Vehicle

It all started with a road trip. All the best ideas do, in my opinion. Driving down the A1 with my mum in the driver’s seat and my wife in the back. The year is 2013. “How hard would it be to convert a camper van to electric?” I ask my mum. “Not too hard,” she replied. … Maybe a strange question to ask, but there is some context.

I am personally the wrong generation to love classic camper vans. I disagree with, but appreciate this observation. Born in 1988, our family never had one. I fell in love with images of them on tea towels and mugs. Plus, spotting one on the motorway on bank holiday travels. My wife and I were married in 2009 and had a splitty camper as our wedding car. It suited us nicely but we never imagined we could ever own one. Like many, it was a dream of ownership but the concern for ‘issues’ also kept my cash in my wallet.

The classic camper vans, VWs up until the late 1980s, were just as famous for breaking down as they were for their looks and charm. I heard stories of AA vans parking outside VW shows to save them making a long journey for a call out. I guess this is why they have such a “hobby shop” following. People forever tinkering and fixing; making new or just patching up the old. Even specifically VW camper vans have a huge industry built around keeping them on the road. Maybe this is what caught my interest as a conversion. These beautiful steel boxes were already set to undergo any transformation. They can be campers, minibuses, ambulances, mobile bars, the list is endless. So, for me, a camper van would be perfect, but which one?

Early campers were iconic. The classic split-screen camper has carried the image of the hippy vibe for over 60 years and it’s still going strong. But they were rare, and expensive, and normally filled with rust. The later “classic,” the T25, fixed a lot of the running issues plagued by the early campers, but we weren’t going to care about “running issues.” Plus, in my opinion, the T25 is a little ugly (send angry letters to my editor). Note from Kit’s first-in-line editor, Jesper: I like the T25 — it’s boxy!

This left us with the perfect T2. 1969–1979. Early or late was no issue to us.

Now, back to the road trip and my mum’s response. She’s a bit more qualified than you might expect. In 2020, (Dr) Gilly Lacey is a Senior Lecturer in Electrical Engineering at Teeside University. Her PhD was The effect of smart grid utilisation on the degradation of an EV battery and she was one of the first in the country to have a Nissan Leaf on trial. As a family, we’ve since gone through 3 Nissan Leafs, 2 BMW i3s, and a Kia e-Niro.

So, back to the camper. After deciding that the plan was a good one, we started the business dimensions. Classic campers are regularly used for hire, so we figured, as a good return on investment, we should run our electric camper for hire. So, to start us off, we needed the following;

We sourced a startup loan to get us started, with a business plan to convert a camper to electric and then hire it out for holidays around Yorkshire. I started a Photo Stream from day one of the project and my first picture was the eDub Logo. The whole plan for eDubs came together very quickly in my mind — from the logo, to the style, to the interior, it all had to be perfect. We budgeted £30,000 ($37,000) and planned a 100 mile range conversion. Follow the series to see how accurate those plans were…

We originally looked for a camper van business for sale. We thought we’d run a few petrol campers for a while to feel out the market, then slowly convert them to electric. We had some good chats with a company on the south coast of the UK that was for sale, but there were disagreements within the business and they didn’t follow through. So we decided to bite the bullet and go all electric with van number 1.

A friend of mine has a mechanic friend who we called to see if he would be interested in the idea of helping us with the conversion. He agreed and we met for a pint at the local pub to talk it through. I always find important decisions like this are best decided over a local Yorkshire pint! So the decision was made to find a van!

Our mechanic was based in a small village near Whitby and found a VW specialist in Sunderland, a few miles north. They had an imported American van that was bought for a customer. The customer had bought the van, gutted it (and I mean gutted!), and then run out of money. So the garage had bought it back and now had it on sale. One phone call later we were on our way up north.

The van was perfect, a perfect shell with nothing in it. It was stripped and primed but nothing else. The engine was removed, so we asked the garage to keep that and in return they reduced the price. It had the windows removed, and in the back, it had a bit of yellow/green interior seating (no thanks). The garage agreed to paint the van and do a left- to right-hand drive conversion for a reduced rate. The papers were signed and we had a van. She was immediately named Indie, as she was from a town called Andrews in Indiana.

At eDub Services, we take any form of donor vehicle. We specialise in VW camper vans because we know how they work, and more importantly, know what components fit where! A Thing of the Past (Rebelcaptain, 3)

Oh, hey look, it's more of my Rebelcaptain Captain America AU because I'm weak and also people started guessing where this was going. In my defense, I didn't make it difficult to figure out. What can I say? I'm a sucker for pain.

life: noun, the existence of an individual human being or animal

The mission is simple, just a protection detail. It’s probably more for show than anything, considering who she is. Just another stage. She’s done a dozen like this since being let out of her sandbox to play with others. They don’t give her anything too dangerous because they know that she’ll likely do something they won’t like. These filler missions aren’t that bad though. At least they’re something and they keep her occupied. If she’s busy with the job, with the future, then she can’t think about the past.

Jyn quietly begins to rebuild a life outside of the job, though it’s still a relatively empty one. She doesn’t have a group of friends that she goes out with for drinks on down time. No hobbies outside of learning new weapons and tech and sparring to speak of. There aren’t any photos hanging on the walls of her small apartment, no personal decorations to give away a personality, no potted plants to take care of, nothing to suggest that the place is anything more than somewhere to sleep and eat.

News on the television drones on in the background, like she’s waiting to hear something that S.H.I.E.L.D. won’t alert her to first. What, she isn’t sure. It tires her to be honest, all the death and unrest that she can’t fix, all the people she can’t save in a country far away that her own doesn’t seem to care about. She thinks about asking questions -- demanding to be deployed -- but there is no simple answer for these problems. It makes her wonder if her sacrifice did any good at all. There’s always another war to be fought.

She’s standing silently to the side of the stage, Shara’s humored voice crackling in the earpiece as she wanders through the crowd. The senator’s speech isn’t the most radical thing out of this new era, but it’s enough to cause some waves and apparently waves are dangerous these days. Jyn glances at her watch the check how much longer the speech is due to last. When she looks back up, a shiny reflection in the distance glares back at her from one of the adjacent buildings.

It could be nothing. Any other agent might’ve dismissed it as the sun shining against one of the windows, but Jyn gets rocked back to her time in the military. She remembers the all-too familiar glint coming from Cassian’s sniper rifle, his weapon of choice, always letting her know that she wasn’t alone even if it looked like it. And so she reacts like it is very much something.

Screaming out a warning would be foolish, so Jyn rattles off, “Sniper, blue building, twelfth floor, fourth window to the left,” to alert Shara and the other agents stationed in the area as she rushes onto the stage. Before anyone or even the senator can say anything, Jyn hears a crack in the air and throws her shield up. The bullet smashes into the vibranium and falls to the ground, the vibrations rippling down her arm, but she grits her teeth and ignores it.

The senator gapes down at the bullet and whispers a horrified, “Oh my god,” before Jyn shoves her off the stage and more obvious bullets begin to pepper around them. The crowd, now fully aware of what is going on, goes wild and breaks into utter chaos. Screaming drowns out the warning sounds of sniper fire as Jyn rolls off the stage and out of the line of sight. Her heart hasn’t started racing yet.

Catching sight of three agents grouping around the senator while a black SUV speeds their way, Jyn snaps a hand at them. “Get the senator out of--” One agent topples over due to a precise bullet to the head and she whips around to see where it came from. Either there’s multiple snipers or the one out there is exceptionally talented and is packing some serious high tech heat. “Shara, do you have a visual?”

“No!” Shara’s voice is breathless, probably from running at full speed. “I--”

The line gets cut off and Jyn’s blood goes cold. There aren’t many people left alive in this new world that Jyn likes, much less cares about, but Shara is one of them.

“Shit,” Jyn hisses and then turns back to the agents covering the senator. There isn’t anymore sniper fire. Either they’re dead, running, or otherwise engaged. “Get her out of here!”

Without looking back, Jyn takes off in the direction where she saw the sniper glare. She leaps onto the stage and then jumps off of it into the crowd. People push at her in a manic, unorganized, and fruitless attempt to escape the sights of a sniper, all of them doing excellent imitations of flailing targets, but Jyn shoves her way through them, not caring if she has to knock people out of her way. When she finally breaks free of the crowd, she jumps on top the hood of a car and runs over it before leaping onto an SUV where she leaps to grab the railing of a third floor balcony and jerks herself over the bars to land solidly on the concrete.

The couple safely watching the scene unfold from inside gawk at her and she gives them an awkward grin as she opens the sliding screen door. “Pardon me.” She squeezes past them and bolts out of their apartment without looking back. Once she reaches the stairs, she takes them by two, her enhanced muscles singing at finally being used properly, her heart thumping in her chest, and her mind focused on reaching Shara, who is hopefully still alive to be giving the sniper hell.

At the twelfth floor, Jyn bursts through the door and catches sight of a body being thrown through a door and slamming into the adjacent wall in the hallway. Her breath hitches when she recognizes Shara’s wild hair and signature jacket and she dashes towards her. When Jyn reaches the other woman, she’s relieved to see that Shara is alive, battered and exhausted with some obvious difficulty breathing, but alive.

Still, this is no ordinary beating. Shara’s particular skills include fighting using multiple techniques. For someone to take her down this badly, they would have to be equally or even more dangerous, something that Jyn honestly didn’t think possible.

“I’m okay,” Shara wheezes, “but the assassin--”

“I’ve got it.”

When Jyn goes to stand up, Shara snatches her by the wrist and stares her in the eyes. “This isn’t a normal assassin.”

“Good thing I’m not a normal agent,” Jyn responds before rising. She darts into the room just in time to catch a glimpse of a man leaping out of the window. Twelve stories up. Without a rope or means of slowing their fall. No kidding. Definitely not a normal assassin. Jyn follows without hesitation, launching herself over the balcony even though she hears Shara shouting in the background, and flies in the air. For a few seconds, it feels a lot like freedom and Jyn can actually breathe.

She lands on her toes on a building only five stories down, absorbing most of the shock, but it’s still hard and she has to roll foward to recover and keep from injuring herself. She has to throw herself to the ground almost immediately to miss being shot and rolls behind a brick wall to gain some cover. Instinctively, she goes to reach for her gun, but then remembers that she doesn’t have one. Captain America doesn’t carry guns. Seems kind of ironic consider how gun crazy this damn country is. She had one during the war, even used a few Hydra guns on their own men.

Instead, all she has is her shield, which she trusts more than most people, and she spins around the corner and launches it as hard as she can at the assassin. It’s light, but made of a metal that is stronger than any other metal known in existence. No one is capable of withstanding its impact except for her and that’s only because she was modified and learned to make it an extension of herself. It’s the last thing remaining from her old life to exist. In a way, it is her and she is it. No one else can compare to it.

And then the running assassin skids to a halt and catches the shield one-handed. She hears the unmistakable metal thud of vibranium impact, the sound ringing in her ears, as she stands wide out in the open and stares in shock and confusion at the sight. They connect eyes and she’s overwhelmed by the strange mixture of intensity and blankness in his dark eyes not covered by the mask hiding most of his face. Half of her mind locks onto those eyes; the other half is too alarmed to think about it.

He caught it. The asshole caught her shield. That...isn’t possible. It isn’t right. It’s hers. It’s her . It feels strangely like a violation and a violent desire to get her shield back burns inside of her. She hasn’t felt this furious since she found out that Cassian was dead and everyone at S.H.I.E.L.D. had kept it from her.

For the first time, Jyn doesn’t think of her opponent as just another would-be assassin, but something far else. She doesn’t know what to think except, Who the hell is this guy? Because he is not playing around. If he wasn’t holding onto her shield like it was just a frisbee, she might’ve been impressed.

Without warning, he spins, just as she did, and launches it back. She catches it hard in her gut, unable and unwilling to dodge it, but the throw is so hard that it forces her to skid back a few feet. By the time she looks up, the assassin is gone, like a ghost, nothing but a memory, and her mind spins wildly at the implications. An impossible shooter, deadly in hand-to-hand combat, dropped five stories without concern, caught her damn shield. This is something new.

And a little part of her, a part that she tries very hard to hide, is excited.

[HM] The Problematic Boy Who Saved the World

In March of the year 2019 humanity came inches from extinction when an extraterrestrial threat (that looked something like the grey humanoids from science fiction) came to Earth with hostile intent. Cities were levelled and many killed in the short conflagration that followed the invasion, against which the combined might of the world’s superpowers paled.

Huddled, and shivering among the wreckage of gutted cities, humanity prepared to meet an untimely end.

However, unbeknownst to humanity or the alien insurgents a scrappy group of teenagers had slipped aboard the mothership. Utilizing deception, firearms and friendship, the group made their way through the aircraft carrier-sized vessel which hovered over Manhattan until they reached the Core.

The Core, to which all alien sentience was tethered, was protected by the most elite of the invaders’ forces, and even with the element of surprise most of the teenagers met powerfully violent ends. In the final moments of the invasion only one boy, Marcus, stood between survival and the complete decimation of our species. As his last remaining grenade came into contact with the Core and combusted, armies of intergalactic lifeforms all over Earth dropped to the ground - lifeless husks. Using the wireless transmission station with which the aliens had hijacked earthen TV frequencies, Marcus appeared to the world - weary and bruised.

“It’s over, everybody.” He said, a sheepish smile on his face, “They’re gone. We’re safe.”

Victorious and rejuvenated, humanity pulled together to rebuild. Within a couple of months most modern infrastructure was working again. With communication links still being salvaged and most over-air transmission reserved for armed forces and critical services, not a lot was known about the Saviour of Humanity, or what happened to him following the defeat of the aliens. Over the coming days there where whispers on the wind; hearsay from passing supply caravans or travellers that Marcus had been recovered from the mothership, and was reunited with his family somewhere in what remained of upstate New York.

By the end of August, life was coming to resemble pre-invasion times and world-wide interconnectivity was restored. With renewed digital freedom, stories of loss, survival and valor poured over the internet and humanity began searching for the boy who had saved the world.

They didn’t have to look far, and on the 16th of September the first post-war tweet from the (now verified) account @That420Marcus read, simply:

“Your welcome!”

The responses criticising grammar were overwhelmed by an outpouring of thanks and appreciation for the boy who gave everything for his planet. In the following hours further details emerged about the mothership incursion, and Marcus’s firsthand survival account.

With the government being so quick to contain as much of the alien technology as possible, Marcus became the unofficial spokesperson for the invasion, and armchair strategists solicited him for his thoughts on the alien campaign - which Marcus gave freely:

@That420Marcus “Its weird cos you’d think they go for big cities and stuff and ignore less important places like africa but they were EVERYWHERE. Kinda still cant believe I beat them. its like a dream”

To which, inevitably, came the responses asking if Marcus could clarify what he meant when he said ‘less important places like africa’. Marcus was quick to clarify that he had meant nothing by this remark, and that perhaps he hadn’t phrased it as well as he could have. Other Twitter users jumped to his defence and accused others of intentionally misinterpreting the tweet.

A few minutes later he appended this with a follow up tweet:

@That420Marcus “Its been a stressfull time for every1 the last few months but were safe now so i think we all need to lighten up a bit n just enjoy life :)”

A handful of people began a forensic investigation into Marcus’s Twitter post history, which was still publicly available thanks to a robust decentralized network of backup servers. As well as identifying his hobbies (sports) and remaining family (father, two sisters, a dog), this deep-dive also unearthed a thread in which Marcus had referred to a forum moderator using a homophobic slur when his thread titled “sjw genderswapping in movie remakes” was locked.

In a TV interview Marcus sat small and nervous opposite a presenter who probed him on this historic digital rant. Between the two figures a large digital screen showed the offending Tweet in triple-XL, and under the interviewer’s stern-but-not-unsympathetic gaze Marcus admitted that it was “a bad look”. What he didn’t do, as many online were quick to point out, was apologize.

Thinkpieces sprung up with titles like “Why We Don’t Owe Anything To Marcus” and “Marcus: Pariah or Messiah?”. Certain parties were sympathetic, reminding the more vocal detractors that this was a seventeen year old boy who had watched all of his friends die and done humanity a great service.

On one side you’d hear: “he has the world’s ear, and his toxic words are doing more harm than good rn and he needs to do better.”

To which: “More harm than the extinction of the human race? lmao show a bit of respect, he’s done enough.”

As a media trail led Marcus to the west coast, he was insulated by high profile survivors who praised his contribution to humanity; sharing rapport with him on late-night TV slots and tailing his growing entourage as he moved from state to state.

He spoke at motivational conferences where he was heard to say “I was once a normal guy, like all of you”, and from there attended appearances at movie premieres and Celebrity birthday parties. He was invited as a guest speaker at high school graduations, store openings, flat earth conferences and anti-vaccination sit-ins. The latter were met with a forceful online/offline response, but Marcus was quick to address the issue:

@That420Marcus “idk i think everyone is intitled to an opinion (and I fought for your right to say it) actually we could have asked the aliens what shape the world is if i hadnt smoked them lol”

As Twitter user @Kerrykeri3 wrote: “There’s a certain irony to the boy who saved the world being such a toxic human being. Makes you wonder what really happened in that mothership. It’s almost enough to make you wonder if it was worth it.”

Here’s What it Takes to Bring A Hot Rod Back from the Dead

The popularity of barn finds and survivor hot rods has created a whole new segment of the hot rod hobby. Cars with history are much more interesting than something built in the modern era, but we had to convince Charles Berry that his ’34 Plymouth, his high school hot rod, was a really special piece.

For those of you who didn’t see our earlier story about the coupe (“One Piece at a Time,” Jan. 2017), here’s a brief rundown: The ’34 Plymouth body is mounted to a shortened ’40 Ford frame with a ’56 Lincoln rearend, suspended with coil springs and custom ladder bars. The engine is a 301ci small-block Chevy, a bored-out 283 from a ’61 Corvette, backed by a Muncie four-speed manual transmission from a later-model Vette. A ’34 Pontiac grille leads off the mixed bag of hot rod treasures, and you’ll find cool stuff like a Hurst front engine mount, a set of roadster-style headers painted in white, and a Weiand tunnel ram following closely behind.

Charles warned us some parts of the build were a bit crude: “Don’t laugh, this was built on a paper route budget.” He built it on the patio of his father’s house in Decatur, Georgia, in the mid-1960s, and just couldn’t part ways with such a cool piece of his car-guy lifestyle. So it was parked indoors for most of its life. When Charles moved to his current residence, he built the house to include a basement large enough to house his woodshop as well as space for his old hot rod. Eventually, space got tight, and Charles passed the legacy of his homebuilt hot rod to his son-in-law (yours truly). The plan was to make some repairs and get it back on the road.

I handled a great deal of the work in my home garage but called on help from my dad, Troy Byrd, and friends, including Wally Smith, Denny George, and Kyle Shadden, to make the car roadworthy again. The process was a bit more extensive than I had imagined, but there were a few details, like floorpans, windows, and other odds and ends, that needed attention before I felt comfortable blasting down the road. We could’ve made it operable with very little effort, but the goal was to make it safe and reliable, so trips to local cruise nights could be worry-free.

Most of the existing parts were suitable for use for the car’s revival, but we freshened up some of the vital ingredients to come up with a good blend of Charles’ original intent and our desire to drive the car more than 1,320 feet at a time. A PerTronix Ignitor electronic ignition module is tucked away inside the Delco-Remy dual-point distributor, and we re-used the Holley 450-cfm carburetors. The engine got some fresh paint and a new FlowKooler water pump, while a custom hydraulic clutch system, using a ’61 Chevrolet truck combo master cylinder and slave cylinder, got us another step closer to being on the road. Finally, we set the car back on the ground with a set of big-and-little bias-ply Firestones from Coker Tire and appropriately sized as-cast Strike wheels from Rocket Racing Wheels. Various parts from Summit Racing and Honest Charley Speed Shop wrapped up the rebuild.

Charles’ disclaimers and doubt about the quality of his build turned to fond memories of yesteryear when the old small-block spoke to him through open headers. His stories of squirrelly handling characteristics and disgruntled neighbors suddenly struck a chord with me, as I took the car on a surreal maiden voyage trip down the road. “I sure hope I can get this thing gathered up,” I thought after opening the secondaries in First and Second gear, followed shortly by, “Our neighbors must hate us.”

Charles rode shotgun with me on a trip down the road and was eager to get behind the wheel. As he got situated in the driver seat, I started to give him a heads-up about the various peculiarities I had discovered before realizing he already knows all of this car’s tricks. It was like a reunion with an old friend, in which you pick up right where you left off, except this car is more like a member of the family.

This car tells stories that only Charles can hear, ranging from his father’s snide remarks to his time spent in Vietnam, dreaming up ideas and wishing for the chance to go home and make a pass in it. Now that the car is back on the road, those stories result in a flood of memories and emotions, and those tears in his eyes aren’t from a rich fuel mixture. This road reunion is one for the ages, so take a look at how we turned a dormant hot rod into a trip down memory lane.

1 As we told you in the Jan. 2017 issue, the Plymouth had been sitting in Charles Berry’s basement for more than 30 years, but most of the parts were still intact. Our plan is to get it running and driving again without losing the spirit of his high school hot rod.

2 When the car came out of storage, we wanted to see if the small-block Chevy would turn over with a hot battery hooked up to it. The small-block quickly spun to life, using the same generic parts store switch that Charles installed decades ago.

3 Curiosity got the best of us, so we poured gas in the carburetor’s vent tubes to see if this thing would fire off. For the first time in many years, gassy fumes flowed through the white headers.

4 After we heard the rumble of open headers for a brief moment, we started the disassembly process to make this old hot rod roadworthy. We removed the spark plugs and ignition components, followed by the headers. Ultimately, the engine would come out for easier access to reconfigure the hydraulic clutch.

5 When the car was built in the 1960s, it featured a plywood firewall and floorboards. This go-around, we wanted to strengthen the body and offer a sturdy mounting surface for a pedal assembly and master cylinder with a steel floorpan and firewall.

6 The Muncie four-speed manual transmission and aluminum bellhousing have been in the car since the late 1960s. The clutch fork and throwout bearing had some damage, so we replaced them with stock-style parts and built a small bracket to mount the Dorman slave cylinder for a ’61 Chevrolet truck.

7 We picked up a Trans-Dapt brake and clutch pedal assembly from Summit Racing. It features a simple mounting bracket and has the vintage look, so it worked very well for the old Plymouth. Here, we mock it up and mark the holes to be drilled in the firewall.

8 The pedal assembly needed some tweaking to work with our ’61 Chevrolet truck combo master cylinder. We used a die grinder with a head-porting-style burr bit to open up the holes in the pedal assembly bracket.

9 An important note is that the clutch and brake ports are not oriented in the standard fashion. The truck’s big crossover pedal assembly positioned the clutch pushrod on the side nearest the engine. So we switched the guts from one side of the master cylinder to the other to have proper fluid flow.

10 With the master cylinder mounted, we started rebuilding the brakes on each corner of the ’40 Ford frame. We replaced the rubber brake hoses and wheel cylinders, but everything else was salvageable.

11 There aren’t a lot of moving parts on an early Ford drum brake, so the brake maintenance and repair were minimal. All of the hardware looked great, and the pad material and drum surface were sufficient to get this hot rod back on the road.

12 When we dragged the car out of the basement, it had a set of Mickey Thompson Radir-style wheels on the front and aluminum slots on the back. The tires were not dry-rotted, but it needed some fresh rubber and some matching wheels. We went with Firestone tires from Coker Tire and a set of cast-center Rocket Strike wheels.

13 Since there is a chance we might occasionally beat on this old Plymouth, we opted for stick-on wheel weights instead of the generic hammer-on weights. The front tires are Firestone 5.60-15 blackwall bias-ply tires, and the wheels are Rocket Strike 15×4.5-inch front runners with the early Ford 5×5.5-inch bolt pattern.

14 Out back, we went with 8.20-15 Coker Firestone Dragster cheater slicks mounted to a pair of 15×8-inch Rocket Strike wheels. The slicks are DOT approved and measure about 30.5 inches in diameter, a perfect fit for an old-school hot rod.

15 Rocket Racing Wheels offers the Strike wheel in a variety of sizes and finishes. We wanted the as-cast finish to replicate the wheels that were installed on the car in the 1960s. We also opted for 4-inch backspacing to retain the car’s wide stance in the rear.

16 With the chassis and rolling stock sorted out, it was time to prepare the engine and transmission for installation. We replaced the crusty old water pump with a new unit from FlowKooler. The stock-look water pump flows better at low rpm and even frees up a little bit of power on the top end.

17 The 301ci small-block Chevy is on the hook and sliding into place one final time. Notice the vintage Hurst front mount, which has a custom bracket for the generator. The Chevrolet Orange paint and bead-blasted Corvette valve covers really gave it the right look.

18 Before we dove into revamping the engine, we drained the 40-year-old oil out of it. We kept the old-style oil filter canister but gave it a fresh Wix filter. Five quarts of conventional 20w50 oil will be adequate to keep the old bearings lubricated.

19 The Hurst front engine mount doesn’t allow for a mechanical fuel pump, so we replaced the old AC electric fuel pump with this Mr. Gasket universal fuel pump. It is set up to run 4-7 psi of fuel pressure and flows 35 gallons per hour, which is a perfect fit for our carbureted small-block.

20 Rubber is one of the first things to deteriorate on a car that’s been sitting, so we replaced the rubber portions of the fuel supply lines with new 3/8-inch hose. The Earl’s hose cutter always comes in handy for making quick cuts.

21 Additional crusty parts included a pair of Holley 450-cfm four-barrel carburetors. Both were in bad shape, so we grabbed two Holley TricKits from Summit to freshen them up.

22 Moving on to the ignition, we knew the old Delco-Remy dual-point distributor functioned, but we also knew the car would run better with electronic ignition. Instead of dropping a brand-new distributor in place, we decided to keep the Corvette dual-point and upgrade it with a PerTronix Ignitor.

23 After taking the guts out of the dual-point distributor, we bolted the PerTronix plate into place and then installed the sleeve over the distributor shaft, followed by the compact Ignitor module. The wires feature a grommet that fits perfectly in the original notch in the distributor body.

24 With the distributor buttoned up, we mounted the PerTronix Flame-Thrower II coil to the firewall. Then we ran a wire from the switch to the negative side, a wire from the starter to the positive side, and the two wires from the Ignitor module to the corresponding terminals on the coil.

25 We screwed a new set of AC Delco R45S plugs into the Power Pack cylinder heads and routed the PerTronix Flame-Thrower plug wires beneath the headers.

26 Summit Racing saved us some time with these pre-fabbed universal seat brackets. We made risers out of 2×4-inch boxed tubing, but these L-shaped brackets allowed us to dial in the height and angle of the seats with ease.

27 The low-back Jaz racing seats also came from Summit Racing, and they’re the perfect size and style for the coupe. We went with the Jaz vinyl covers, which simply slide and snap into place, but we’re thinking of having some custom retro-style covers sewn up. That’s a project for somewhere down the road.

28 Although it still needs some aesthetic finishing touches, the old coupe really cleaned up well, considering that our focus was on mechanical repairs and upgrades. The enhanced stance provided by the Coker Tire and Rocket Racing Wheels combination made a huge difference in the appearance.

29 Charles Berry couldn’t have been happier to drive his high school hot rod for these action shots. Even though he hadn’t driven the car in decades, he didn’t cut it any slack, as we blasted down a two-lane back road with open headers howling.
