Second Chances | WinWin
sicheng x reader
genre: fluff, angst
summary: your first love, you have had affections for sicheng for a long time, but missed the opportunity to tell him. as ambitions separated you farther and farther until you lost contact, you believe you lost that chance. that is, until sicheng reappears back into your life at your best friend’s wedding of all places.
words: 4.7K+
a/n: i miss winwin being with the 127 boys
Tumblr media
Seated at the bridal table, before the massive crowd, you have as clear a view as possible of the whole wedding reception ensemble in front of your eyes. The bride and the groom shift from table to table, speaking to guests, the memories forever ingrained through the lens of the photographer following behind them. You pick at the food on your plate, careful not to spill any of the pumpkin sauce onto the peach, silk bridesmaid dress you adorned. Shouts and cheers sound throughout the hall as the guests on the dance floor whirl the night away, allowing the rhythm of the cheesy 90’s boy band song to coax them into swaying their bodies side to side. Beside you, you hear the clear, melodic sound of Jaehyun’s laughter. The best man, and one of your closest friends – second only to the bride herself – faces you, lips upturned in a smile as he points to the middle of the crowd. You move your gaze to follow down the length of his arm to where his index finger is pointing and notice his best friend, Johnny, attempting to breakdance, the rest of the audience in a circle around him, barely containing their laughter.
“Let’s go.”
You shake your head, but Jaehyun simply stands up, grabbing your wrist and dragging you towards the crowd.
Squeezing yourself into the circle of guests, it’s only when you look up from the ground, careful not to step on the guests’ feet with your heels, that you notice the familiar face across from you.
Sicheng.
You don’t remember seeing his name on the guest list despite assisting in creating the seating arrangements. You definitely would have remembered seeing his name if that were the case. Yet, here he was, standing mere meters away from you, the warm lighting reflecting against his blonde dyed hair, illuminating him in an angelic glow. His eyes returned your stare, the same soft and thoughtful look you still remember from all those years ago. He looks so similar to the Sicheng you knew before he faded out of your life five years prior, but at the same time so different. His facial features are more defined now, he looks like his muscles have toned, his suit fitting against his shoulders and body in a way they hadn't quite during prom. He looks as surprised as you are to see him.
Jaehyun pulls you out of the trance Sicheng placed you in by pushing you onto the dance floor. Stumbling over your feet, you send a glare at him as he fails at containing his loud laughter, his hands clapping at your misfortune. Awkwardly moving your limbs to the music, you try not to think about how embarrassing the situation is or how ridiculous you know you look. That is, until Sicheng is suddenly thrust in front of you, his chest all that covers your vision as you faintly hear the sound of Johnny’s voice yelling, “Get it, Sicheng,” which confuses you, though you aren’t able to ponder too long over the thought as the man in question’s presence causes your breath to catch in your throat.
“Hey.”
Sicheng gives you a lopsided smile, his nerves starting to get the better of him. He knew you would be here, but as much as he tried to prepare himself to see you again, seeing you stand before him, he realises now how incredibly unprepared he is. The dress you wear hugs your body nicely, the make-up accentuating your already pretty features, your hair styled in a way that frames the shape of your face so beautifully.
“Hey,” you smile back at him, and oh how he forgot how much he missed the sound of your voice. It sounds so much sweeter than he remembers.
“Come on! Bust some moves, Sicheng!”
Mark’s comment brings him back to reality and Sicheng follows his cue, beginning to feel the rhythm of the song and dances to the beat, circling around you as you sway along, watching his elegant movements, his years of studying dance clearly evident in how his body flows naturally. He grabs your hand and twirls you around effortlessly. You feel the wind against your legs as your dress spreads out around you, lifting as you spin around, and Sicheng can’t help but think it looks like a blooming flower. The crowd of people around him blur in the distance as he spins you in circles, his eyes only able to focus on your face and your expression of happiness; the way he always wants you to feel when he looks at you.
➳➳➳
Sinking into the soft, cushioned couch inside the private room beside the ballroom, you feel your body relax into the cotton material, your limbs finally allowed a rest for a few moments of the night. Kara, the newly-wed and your best friend, needed a breather for a few moments from the bustling main room and the stress of making sure her perfect day was going well. You also believe she has ulterior motives for only dragging you into the private quarter and none of the other bridesmaids working hard to ensure the night is running according to plan. And as you slip your shoes off to rest your aching calves and help ease the oncoming blisters, your intuition proves true.
“It was nice to see you dancing with Sicheng,” she smiles and you roll your eyes.
“You never told me he was coming.”
She shoots you an apologetic look, before smirking. Oh the nerve she has sometimes.
Kara stretches her hands to the air, leaning back into the couch opposite from you.
“I didn’t think he was going to come in the first place either. I contacted him when we started planning for the wedding, asking if he thought it was possible for him to come down to the wedding and he told me he couldn’t with his schedule. You know how hard they work him over there.”
You nod, knowing well.
“So, I didn’t count him in the guest list when arranging tables but he called last minute, only a few weeks ago actually, asking if the invite was still open. Something must have changed, opening up his schedule. So I managed to squeeze him in since I know how much the boys miss him too.”
You nod in response, offering a low hum in understanding only causing your best friend to grin.
“And I knew you would want to see him too.”
Rolling your eyes at her, she only starts to laugh louder, teasing you, your emotions and your beating heart.
Exiting the private room and re-entering the ballroom, like a moth drawn to a flame, despite the sea of people before you, your eyes seem to instantly pinpoint Sicheng amongst the crowd. He sits at the table, alone, as all the other boys seem to be scattered throughout the venue. He’s not too far from where you currently stand and if you are honest with yourself, you want to sit beside him and catch up on all the missed years distance has stolen from you both.
As you approach him, you notice him looking intently at his phone screen, halfway through sending a message. Pulling out the chair beside him, his thumbs pause their actions and he lifts his head to face you.
“You don’t mind if I interrupt you, do you?”
He immediately shakes his head, typing fast to finish the text and hit send.
“My group mates were just checking up on me,” he informs and you nod in response.
“They must really miss you then,” you comment and Sicheng only shakes his head.
“Way too much, if you ask me.”
His resigned tone and the roll of his eyes which accompanied the statement only causes you to laugh.
“I can’t blame them,” you shrug.
Sicheng looks at you, wondering if that sentiment entails more than you let on. He hopes it does, but as he catches a glimpse of your side profile while you turn to look at the crowd, he is unable to dwell further on that thought, enraptured by you. During his years away you had grown so well; your features are more defined, you gave off a more confident aura than before and you seemed more sure of yourself – so different from the you he first met and from the you he had to leave behind, but at the same time, still so familiar and comforting.
➳➳➳
Sicheng had always been acquainted with you since he can remember. Growing up in the same neighbourhood, you went to the same kindergarten, elementary, middle and high school. You were close with Jaehyun during those years and so inevitably, had gotten to know the rowdy group of boys that are his best friends. Sicheng remembers countless parties where he would catch a glimpse of you amongst the sea of bodies, usually following behind Kara or Jaehyun. Yet, it was only during the first year of middle school that he can truly say he crossed the title of ‘acquaintance’ and became your friend.
The final bell ringing throughout the entire complex, Sicheng crams his chemistry books into his bag, haphazardly shoving his stationery into his pencil case, desperate to catch the early bus home, wanting nothing more than to arrive to the comfort of his home and fall asleep to the warmth of his blankets and bed. Rushing out of the classroom, waving goodbye to his friends as he passes them by, Sicheng checks the time on his phone, quickening his pace to ensure he makes it to the bus stop within the estimated seven minutes until the arrival.
Sliding onto the metal seat of the bus stop, Sicheng pauses to catch his breath. He arrives by the six minute mark, but he can see the bus approaching in the distance, momentarily stopped at the traffic lights.
“Hey.”
He looks up from staring at the ground beside his worn out shoes, to see you sitting besides him, smiling wide.
Offering a quiet “hey” in response, silence befalls the two of you, as you wait for the bus to arrive.
You follow behind him once the bus arrives, yet he wasn’t expecting for you to sit in the empty seat beside him. He won’t admit it, but the thought makes his heart skip a beat. Sicheng watches you from the corner of his eyes as you unzip the front pocket of your bag. You take out your phone, but seem to keep searching for something else. Closing the front compartment he notices you search through all the other sections before closing the bag completely and simply holding it to your chest.
You must have noticed his stare, as you announce you forgot your earphones to him and Sicheng simply nods. He has earphones in his pockets and though he was planning on using them for himself, a part of him feels compelled to let you borrow his. He reasons that it’s because it is the polite thing to do, but something in his heart tells him otherwise. Still, he reaches into his pocket, detangling the wires and hands them to you anyway. You shake your head.
“They’re yours. It’s okay, you can use them.”
Sicheng only leaves his palms outstretched, earphones placed neatly in his hands.
Sighing, you take them from him, about to plug them into your phone, before you change your mind. Unwinding the wires, you hand him the end.
“You can play your music, I’ll just listen along. It’s your earphones anyway, I don’t want you to sit in silence because of my forgetfulness.”
Now it’s his turn to take the wire from your open palms.
You place an earbud in your left ear, telling him to feel free to pick any type of song, as you close your eyes, curious to the type of music the boy beside you listens to.
After a few minutes of searching, Sicheng finally finds a song for the both of you to listen to.
Following that incident, the two of you became closer. Choosing to sit beside each other on the way home, sharing your playlists to fill the quiet and to pass the hour long drive. Bus rides home turned to hanging out at each other’s houses, to going out to the city together, to always enjoying and wishing for the other’s company.
➳➳➳
“So, how has life been treating you?” You inquire of Sicheng as you swirl the glass of rosé in your hand, taking a sip of the sweet wine.
“It’s been hectic,” Sicheng chuckles. “But it’s been a lot of fun. You should meet the boys I’m with, they’re hilarious and a handful at times but they’re good company. I think you’d like them a lot.”
You smile, happy to know he has people looking out and supporting him still.
Sicheng has always loved dance since you met him, studying traditional dance, practicing for hours on end; it was his passion. And though you hated the fact his pursuit of his passion drove him far from home, you couldn’t blame him for chasing what was close to his heart.
Though sometimes, as you watch videos of him and his group performing, you can’t help but feel the idea of him once being someone you went to school with, grew up with and hold cherish memories with, seems all but too surreal. Like something from a fever dream. And at times it makes you wonder what your lives could have been if he had stayed. Maybe you would have told him how you felt all those years. How you still feel. Maybe you could have had a future together.
➳➳➳
You still remember clearly the day you found out Sicheng would be leaving. The two of you were preparing to graduate that year from high school, on break before you would take your final exams and you would continue on with the next chapter of your lives.
Vowing to yourself, you would tell the boy you loved of your feelings, before you lost the chance. It had seemed like the perfect opportunity. The two of you were to meet by 10:00am at a botanical garden before grabbing lunch in the city and spending the rest of the day together. You were certain you could find the right time to confess your emotions. But alas, it wasn’t meant to be.
Trying to formulate how you would say the next few words in your head was proving more challenging than you expected. You had rehearsed this for hours the previous night, your thoughts keeping you from sleeping, but now, as Sicheng sat in front of you, elbows leaning against the wooden coffee table as he rests his hands on his cheeks, you are at a loss for words.
Your heart is beating at triple speed.
Your palms are shaking.
Your breathing is unsteady.
Focusing on the cup of coffee in front of you, you try to muster up the will to let out the words stuck in your throat, but in the end you both end up saying the same thing in unison.
“I need to tell you something.”
Sicheng smiles sheepishly, running his hands through his hair.
“You go first,” you say, taking the coffee cup in your hands and taking a sip in an attempt to calm your nervous heart.
“Okay.” Sicheng seems reluctant but he shakes his head, just wanting the words to be out there in the open.
“I’m leaving for Korea after we graduate.”
You place the coffee cup back down onto the table.
“Korea?”
He nods.
“You know how I was weighing up whether to take the offer to become a trainee? Well, I decided to take the opportunity.”
“I see.”
Looking out of the café window, you wonder what your life in this city will be like once he’s gone. No more coffee dates, late night snack runs and movie nights. It all just sounds depressing, really.
“I’m really going to miss you.”
Sicheng sighs, mimicking your actions and turning his head to look out the window as well.
“If I could stay here and train I would, but they want me over there. Plus it could be a big chance, I can finally get closer to my dream of dancing and becoming an artist.”
“I’m really proud of you. You’ll be amazing out there.”
You really are proud of him. His hard work studying and dancing hours away was finally paying off. Yet, a part of you can’t help but selfishly want him to stay. To stay in this city you both call home. To stay here with you. But you know you can’t keep him here forever, that his dreams and ambitions are important and this was a chance to chase them.
So instead, you keep your mouth shut, your feelings for the boy remaining on the tip of your tongue and hidden in your heart.
And when the months pass, and you feel the warmth of Sicheng’s embrace for the last time, as a voice through the speakers announces boarding for the 2:30pm flight to Korea has begun, you still haven’t told him of your affections.
As his schedules become busier and busier, more hectic and unpredictable, the constant communication between you lessens and lessens until you lose contact altogether.
And three years later, when he had debuted with his group, WayV, you still have not told Sicheng you love him.
➳➳➳
The sound of uncontrolled laughter and childish insults alerts you that the boys are moving towards you, so it’s no surprise when the rest of Sicheng’s high school friends arrive at your table.
“What are you two doing all alone, far away in this corner of the ballroom?” Johnny teases, a smirk on his face as he slips into the empty seat beside Sicheng.
“Well for one, Sicheng’s table just happens to be in the corner of the room,” you shrug. “Also, why did you guys ditch him in the first place?”
Johnny gasps at your response, placing his right hand over his heart in mock offense as Jaehyun laughs from beside you, pulling out the spare chair beside you while intentionally nudging your shoulder.
“But no, we just let him catch up with his WayV boys for a second,” Jaehyun clarifies, gesturing to Sicheng’s phone.
Just as the rest of the boys take their seats around the table, you hear the master of ceremonies’ voice through the speakers, all of you turning your attention to the front of the hall as he announces the band is about to play some slow dance songs. All the boys seem to lock eyes, lips upturned in mischievous grins that make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up and the beat of your heart quicken.
They are up to no good.
“This sounds like the perfect opportunity for you to take Y/N on a proper dance,” Jaehyun announces, clapping his hands together as he smiles at Sicheng.
The man in question only rolls his eyes as you glare at Jaehyun.
Yet, the rest of the boys seem to love the idea as they begin to cheer, encouraging Jaehyun’s suggestion. Taeil begins to clap, cheering “dance” over and over again, before Johnny, Mark and Yuta join his chanting.
“If you don’t, I’ll take her for a spin,” Haechan shrugs, causing more cheers and yelling from the boys.
You already know the boys won’t quit their antics until you and Sicheng step onto the dancefloor, so you muster up all your courage and stand up from your seat, stretching your left hand out towards the man you first loved, and still have affections for.
You didn’t think it was possible for them to get any louder than they already are, but the boy’s yelling intensifies.
Surprised by your sudden confidence, Sicheng feels starstruck. He can definitely feel the heat from his cheeks.
“Shall we?”
➳➳➳
It’s close to 1:00am when you finally head home, the stars adorning the night sky as you walk through the city streets leading back home. Sicheng trails behind you, thankful his hotel is near your apartment, afraid to trust his sense of direction when in a now foreign place. The sights have changed since he left, his old landmarks replaced with new ones, improved infrastructure, trendy buildings amongst the traditional; the city he once called home now fragments of old and new. He has been away too long, he feels almost out of place. You however, have never left this city, have seen the transition between the place he calls home and the place where he currently stands, so Sicheng follows your lead.
As the streetlamps cast a yellow glow against the both of you, Sicheng can’t help but find the way your dress catches the light mesmerising. It was all like a blur, a hazy dream, the way you looked to Sicheng; an angelic glow radiating off you as you twirled through the empty streets, laughing the night away. Your hair is now unpinned, the strands hanging loose, a little unruly now from the day’s stressful events; your make-up a little smudged from the tears of happiness that came with your best friend getting married; and you have taken your heels off, now wearing the sneakers you always have in the back of your car for times like these. Yet, you still look as stunning as ever to him.
And this time, he thinks to himself that he has to let you know.
So as you approach his hotel he pulls you in close, pressing his lips against yours before his nerves can talk himself out of it and before the night ends and he has to leave you.
➳➳➳
You sleep in until eleven the next morning. Stretching your limbs, you push yourself up into a sitting position, eyes drawn to the morning light reflecting off the silk dress from the night before which hangs from your wardrobe’s door knob. Though the memory of Sicheng’s lips against yours brings a wide smile to your face, a part of you can’t help but wonder what it all means.
Was it just a heat of the moment thing?
It felt too intimate with too much longing for it to be nothing.
Does that mean he loves you back?
But he never actually said those words out loud to you.
Even if he did feel the same, won’t he have to go back to his group? He can’t just choose to stay here with you and give up his career.
Groaning, you lean back into the soft mattress of your bed, pulling the duvet over your body, not wanting to dwell on the answers to those questions, wanting to delay waking up to the reality things won’t change between you and Sicheng. Five years have already passed since he originally left for Korea, surely that should have been enough time for your heart to move on and find a new love, but as you hear your phone vibrate against the nightstand and you see his contact picture appear on your screen, you know you never will.
Standing in front of your mirror, you fix the bow attached to your blouse, pushing back stray hairs back into place as you prepare to meet up with Sicheng. You aren’t entirely sure whether agreeing to meet him is a good thing, especially after the anxious thoughts from the morning, but a part of you needs to see him before he leaves again; needs to know the true depth of his feelings.
Sicheng chooses to meet you at the same café you used to always frequent when you both were younger. The same café where he told you he was leaving. The same café where you failed to tell him your feelings those five years ago.
“I’m glad this place is still around,” Sicheng smiles as he enters through the front doors, holding it open for you as you step inside behind him.
“They do good coffee,” you shrug. “The owner’s family are keeping the shop going.”
Noticing your old usual table by the window is free, Sicheng points towards the spot and once you nod, he makes his way to save the seats while you order the coffees. Once the orders are placed and you finish paying, you take a seat across from Sicheng, the sense of déjà vu strange and unnerving. It feels like a chance to say the things you were unable to say, but at the same time you are unsure whether it is wise to bring up the feelings you still harbour. If it is even worth letting those sentiments escape out into the open. Sicheng feels differently.
“I meant it,” he states simply, causing you to look up at him.
“When I kissed you last night,” he clarifies. “I meant it.”
“Sicheng-”
“I’ve missed you. So badly.”
He needs to let these words out. He knows he’s being selfish, not letting you respond, but he needs to let the words out before he backs out.
“I liked you. I liked you back then when we were kids, to when we grew up, even when I left for Korea, I still liked you. While I was training and in a country far from home, I missed you so bad, it made me question whether it was worth it, being away from you. But I had already made a choice to pursue this dream, and I was scared to come home only to find you had moved on from our friendship, from me. So I tried to move on from you, but when I came home, and saw you at the wedding last night, all the feelings I had came rushing back, and being with you again – even if it’s been just for a short while – has made me realise how much I missed having you in my life, how much happiness you bring me still, how much I need you. I love you.”
“I don’t know,” you admit, holding your head in your hands, unsure how to handle the confession. It was what you wanted to hear, but you only feel more confused.
“I love you too. God, I love you so damn much, but how does this change anything? You’ll still be going back overseas and back to your busy schedules, while I’ll be stuck here. My friends, my family, my work, my home; it’s all here, I don’t know if I’ll be prepared to leave this behind.”
Sicheng sighs.
“I know that, and I’m not going to ask you to move away just for me. I just needed you to know how I feel – how I’ve felt for a long time – before I leave again.”
His hand searches for yours, wanting to feel your touch, and as you look up at him, he reaches to wipe the tears from under your eyes before enclosing both your hands in his bigger ones.
“And if you want to, I want to try to make things work between us. I know long distance relationships aren’t easy, and time zones will make it hard, but I’ll do everything I can to make sure you feel my love from miles away. I love you. I need you.”
You bite your lip, afraid things will repeat and over time the distance between you will once again cause you to drift further and further once again. You’re not sure your heart can take it, if you had to go through that once more. But his words, and the emotion laced behind them, and the sincerity you can see in his expressions makes you start to think that maybe things will work out.
“Please,” Sicheng pleads, “Give me one more chance, I promise I won’t let you down, I love you too damn much.”
Something in your heart gives way, despite your fears.
You love him.
So utterly, ridiculously and hopelessly in love with this man.
And so you accept.
Sicheng’s eyes glisten with pure happiness and mirth, you can’t help but smile widely, laughing to yourself that somehow the universe has brought him back to you.
You never believed in second chances, but as you look at the smiling man walking beside you, and as he pulls you into his arms and kisses your lips passionately, you can’t help but believe just this once.
And you are going to take this chance.

You're literally??? One of the sweetest??? I was low-key afraid you'd hate me bc I was so inactive on here. But! Anyways! On to questions! Sun/moon? Day/night? Sunshine/rain/clouds? Flats/heels? Flip flops/sneakers? Hot/cold temperature? Hot/cold drink? Socks/no socks? Letters/emails? Ice cream/froyo? Curtains/blinds? Early riser/late sleeper? Glasses/contacts? Phone/laptop? Digital/traditional art? Sweet/unsweet tea? Black coffee/with creamer? Carpet/tile/hardwood? Netflix/YouTube? Soda/water?
I could never hate you! Especially for something as silly as that! Like, you are fully entitled to have a life that does not revolve around tumblr?! ANYWAYS..thank you for the request! This is so cute!
Sun/moon: I love the moon and all (mostly because moon means stars and I’m a sucker for the stars) but I’ll have to go with sun mostly because I’m most awake and active during the day and can do more during the day?
Day/night: Same with the first - I love the night-time but I can do more during the day so I’ll go with that!
Sunshine/rain/clouds: Okay, but there is nothing better than to just sit under a covered porch during a huge thunder and lightning storm and just watch it all happen. Plus, my house has a tin roof and the sound of rain on a tin roof is very relaxing!
Flats/heels: I can’t walk very well in heels so I don’t wear them often. When I do, they’re typically kitten heels or wedges since they’re easier to walk in.
Flip flops/sneakers: I live in my sneakers! (Several pairs of them, in fact!) Sneakers pair well with anything and are comfy! Flip flops are cool and all but the little thing that goes in between your toes gives me blisters!
Hot/cold temperature: I’m Canadian. There’s a lot of fucking cold here. I’ve had enough cold to last me a lifetime and will take it being warm any day!
Hot/cold drink: Because coffee fuels my life! Iced coffee is decent but not my favourite thing so hot drinks it is!
Socks/no socks: Socks are uncomfortable! Unless it’s freezing and I absolutely have to have socks on to avoid my feet becoming popsicles, I’m not putting on socks.
Letters/emails: I love sending and getting letters but it’s so rare to do nowadays. Emails have become so common and honestly, it’s just as nice to get emails from a friend!
Ice cream/froyo: Froyo aspires to be ice cream. (Plus, there are no froyo shops near me so the only time I’ve had froyo is like, from the tub without toppings or anything like that. It was…underwhelming.)
Curtains/blinds: And not blackout ones. I need light coming in.
Early riser/late sleeper : I am always sleep deprived. I wake up a lot when sleeping and only get a few hours of actual sleep a night so honestly, I take sleep whenever I can get it. If that means sleeping in late, I do but most of the time, I need to get up early for work and, because of that, I’m used to waking up early and my body just naturally kind of does that.
Glasses/contacts: I can’t put contacts in. I’ve tried a million times and it’s not good. Besides, I’ve been wearing glasses since early elementary school and I think I look weird without them!
Phone/laptop: Both! I prefer my phone for almost everything besides responding to emails and writing! I also, because my phone hates the app, use Discord only through my computer and because of that, my laptop is also precious to me!
Digital/traditional art: Both forms of art have their appeal and I think both can be beautiful. They’re beautiful in different ways, yeah, but they’re still equally good!
Sweet/unsweet tea: I like black tea, without any milk or sugar/honey. Usually it’s Earl Gray but sometimes I enjoy herbal tea blends.
Black coffee/with creamer: Coffee I take with two sweeteners (stevia) and milk!
Carpet/tile/hardwood: It’s mostly just what I’m used to but also I just prefer the aesthetics of hardwood!
Netflix/YouTube: I listen to a lot of music through youtube and it also has a lot of the old cartoons I grew up on and still love, so I find myself using it a lot more often than I find myself using Netflix.
Soda/water: I try not to drink a lot of soda but I hate drinking water so…
