Tallis is such a character. She's a very unsubtle self-insert of her creator and also the first time we get to know a viddathari personally. She has cool unique rogue abilities, and she's a non-optional companion practically designed to annoy players who already have a favorite party and want to have both their love interest and their sibling along for the DLC and still have something resembling a balanced party. She has a tragic backstory and an unfortunately low-budget miniseries. She's Quirky™️. She offers insights into the appeal of the Qun for a person who has had few choices and little power in their life. Her DLC introduces weird lore that is rarely if ever brought up again. She's loyal to the Qun but can't stop fucking it up. She will flirt with Hawke shamelessly. There is a painful catch in her voice when she asks if Hawke meant it when they said they didn't care what she was. She's a spy who's wearing her organization's logo on her shirt. Most criticisms I have seen of her character are valid and indisputable. I love her so much.

Pineapple

"That's all? Tha-aaaaaah?"

A weed-smelling flour-covered finger wags in front of Steve's face, successfully distracting him from the conversation on the company phone with a paying customer on company time.

Maybe he would feel a bit bad about that if he gave a fuck.

"Stevie. How many times. You can't forget to pop the question."

"Oh fuuuuuuck." Steve tries to seem remorseful. Judging by Argyle's expression he is not successful.

He sighs and turns back to the phone. "Excuse me, sir, but I forgot to pop the question."

There is a short pause. "...pop the question?"

"Yes, I am afraid that otherwise it won't be possible to take your order."

"...alright?"

Steve nods to himself and takes a deep breath. It is going to be fine. Sure, by now he has been disappointed far too often to count - it is the price to pay for good weather and hot people he supposes. But something about that voice makes this particular dude seem trustworthy. Almost...familiar. Maybe...maybe he can dare to hope again? (Never mind that he has had that very same thought the last five times he miserably and pathetically lost)

"Sir, do you want pineapple on your pizza?"

"I. I asked for two Margheritas. Why-?"

"Okay, I will count that as a no. Perfect. Sir, I can confidently say that it was an absolute pleasure to talk to you. Thank you so much for choosing-"

Before Steve can finish the obligatory goodbye speech they are forced to give in the end of every call, the phone is swiftly removed from his hands.

"What did he want again?"

"Margherita."

"Alright, sir. Do you want some pineapples on your Manhattan?"

Steve shakes his head. "Wrong alcoholic beverage, dude. How much did you smoke?!"

"Whatever. My friend John here knows what I mean. Dontcha?"

"How-?"

"You can't just call every customer John."

"It is the eighth most common name in America. I'm bound to get it right sometime. Steven." And with that he goes back to the conversation they were actually being paid to hold.

There are some unintelligible sounds from the other end of the line and Argyle frowns. That is worrying. Argyle is the chilliest dude Steve has ever met. If Argyle is frowning, you know that something is seriously wrong.

His next words are not particularly reassuring, either. "You okay dude? Should I call like the ambulance or something?"

Steve swears his heart stops beating for a second. "What the fuck Argyle?! What is happen-?"

He is once again silenced by the same finger from before, this time pressed against his lips.

"Didn't your mama teach you to be quiet when someone is on the phone?"

Steve quietly but passionately shows his co-worker the middle finger. He then proceeds to start banging on the counter for no reason other than to be a menace. His hand hurts like a bitch but at least he is being obnoxious - not that Argyle seems to care. Or even notice. Fucking weed.

"Wait. Steve? Excuse me, your co-worker's surname wouldn't happen to be... Harrington? Right?"

Argyle pauses. Then Argyle smiles. Steve knows what that motherfucker is planning before he even has to open his mouth. He tries to wrestle the phone out of the other's grip but alas, Steve was cursed with an inferior height and is unable to do anything but helplessly watch as his downfall occurs.

"What would you be willing to exchange for that knowledge?"

Steve sighs and goes to take the whiteboard from the back. When Argyle first claimed that everyone would jump onto the opportunity to add extra pineapple onto their pizza, Steve had thought it was once again the weed talking. Who in their right mind would willingly add more pineapple on pizza?!

Apparently, a lot of people. He has long stopped being surprised when Argyle once again triumphantly tells him that they've got another tally for pineapple. Fucking California.

Twenty minutes later he is parking the Surfer Boy Pizza van on another stranger's driveway. Technically Surfer Boy Pizza encourages their delivery workers to go on motorcycle, but both Steve and Argyle lied on their interview and neither can actually drive one, so they always take the van.

Steve has seen a lot of things in his lifetime. Impossible and weird and otherworldly things. But nothing could have prepared him for what awaited him behind this particular door.

"Wow. You really are Steve Harrington."

...What.

"Jonathan Byers?! What the fuck are you doing here dude?" Very eloquent. Steve knows he must look extremely stupid right now, wordlessly opening and closing his mouth like a very confused fish. Where is smooth playboy Steve "The King" Harrington when you need him?

"Yeah. Just moved here with my family. Who would've thought that we both would end up in the same Cali corner."

"Almost like it was destiny."

An awkward pause ensues. Why the fuck did he say that?!

"You. You're looking good." Jonathan says in that earnest matter-of-fact way of his and Steve can't help but smile. He wouldn't be surprised if his cheeks were pink.

"You look like absolute shit", he answers. Because he is sleep deprived and shook and still a bit high and that is honestly a pretty accurate description of the boy in front of him. Unfortunately, it is also wholly inappropriate for the atmosphere they are currently building. "But don't worry! I like that in a man."

Maybe it wasn't a higher power that made Steve and Jonathan meet again after so many years, but someone must have done something for Jon to agree to go out with him after whatever the fuck that was. (not that he's complaining)

Hiiii, if it's not too much, can you describe the biggest differences between the live action characters and the novel characters in MDZS? They are a lot, so I will love even the difference between few of them! I haven't seen the live action and I don't know if I will ever, but I am curious, considering all the meta. Anyway, thank you in general, even if you don't answer!

Hello anon! This has been in the inbox forever because there are soooo many ways to answer this! However, let me be transparent that I've watched maybe like 1/10 of CQL. Among other obstacles, I simply do not care that much about Lan Wangji and he's always there (even though Wang Yibo is giving it his all... it's not his fault I'm a hater...). Chewing through a book with Ms. Mxtx's commentary was just more enjoyable to me, and even then, to be honest, I still liked SVSSS better. (I just love Shen Yuan/Shen Qingqiu so much. That dude is wild.)

Still, the live action definitely affected how I understood certain characters (...primarily Nie Huaisang) and made me interested in relationships that I didn't pay any attention to in the novel. (I freely admit that the nieyao brainrot is 100% CQL's fault.) Also I found Wang Zhuocheng's Jiang Cheng very cute and loveable. It definitely contributed to my Jiang Cheng Brain Disease.

LISTEN. HE HAS BIG SAD EYES AND THE MEANEST SNEER AND HE MIGHT BURST INTO TEARS AT ANY TIME. HE IS A BABY. A baby who could kill you with his terrifying lightning whip! But a baby nonetheless, to me.

So if you want someone with a real and knowledgeable opinion on the live action, I'm probably not the right person for that! However, here's one difference that changed a bunch of stuff about the characters that I found compelling in the novel: the second flautist.

CQL adds Su She as a second flautist doing unorthodox cultivation in a couple of different places, including at Qiongqi Path, where he seizes control of Wen Ning and is therefore responsible for Jin Zixuan's death. Removing the responsibility for Jin Zixuan's death from Wei Wuxian creates a bunch of cascading character and relationship implications that I don't love.

Firstly, all of the people who cautioned Wei Wuxian against his unorthodox cultivation are now... wrong. If he never lost control, then actually his assessment that he could maintain control wasn't overconfidence, it was just true, and he was persecuted because the Jin needed a scapegoat and wanted the Yin Tiger Tally, not because his cultivation path actually involved significant risks and drawbacks. (To be fair, the Jins actively exploited those drawbacks, the public perception of his cultivation, and Wei Wuxian's failure to manage his reputation. But it matters whether the risks exist or are just made up.)

Secondly, removing his responsibility for Jin Zixuan's death transforms both Wei Wuxian's character and how we understand his relationships with Jiang Yanli, Jiang Cheng, and Jin Ling. Because, in the novel, he kills Jin Zixuan under duress but also after a lifetime of conflict with him. Like, he hates the dude, he doesn't think he's worthy of Jiang Yanli, and he's not willing to examine his hatred and resentment even though Jiang Yanli loves Jin Zixuan and wants to marry him, even after she marries him and has a child with him. (I would argue that a lot of the resentment is because of the eventual marriage; by marrying Jiang Yanli, Jin Zixuan becomes legally recognized family to the Jiang siblings, while Wei Wuxian's relationship with them has no social recognition; I think Wei Wuxian is deeply threatened by that but can't articulate it.) It's a huge failure! Like, dude, you loved someone and you killed that person's beloved spouse. That points to a certain degree of repressed jealousy, possessiveness, longing, arrogance, the list goes on... I am so compelled by that conflict, and the adaptation just erases it.

This also affects how we read Jin Ling's relationship with Wei Wuxian. In one scenario, a teenage Jin Ling is (eventually, minus one little stab) ending the cycle of violence by not seeking vengeance for his father's murder. In the other, it was actually someone associated with Jin Ling's paternal family that killed his father, and he's maybe just... coming to terms with that? One of these scenarios is so much richer and more interesting.

How it affects the relationship between Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian is a little more subtle. It locates the responsibility for a lot of the harm done to the Jiang siblings with the Jin sect, not with Wei Wuxian, removing some of Wei Wuxian's culpability in the devolution of his relationship with Jiang Cheng. If Wei Wuxian isn't guilty of wronging the Jiang family (and instead is also a victim of the Jin sect), then all of Jiang Cheng's rage and betrayal was misdirected. They were both tricked. In some ways, maybe that's easier to patch up after canon? (I wonder if this is why many CQL yunmeng shuangjie reconciliation fics have Jiang Cheng apologize to Wei Wuxian, but not the other way around?) But it's so much less interesting to me!

Finally, it removes Wei Wuxian's tragic flaw! Dude is legitimately a genius but he's got hubris coming out of his ears and it fucks him up big time! This is classic stuff. Please stop flattening my boy!!

Sign-Ups // Applications

• Promo and sign-up reminders will become a bi-weekly reminder starting in May; this ensures that folks can plan ahead well into their calendars so everyone has more breathing room during the creation period.

• Applications will be released sometime in August! It will most likely be the latter half, aiming for the weekend of 8/17-18; this ensures that applications exist a little longer for people to get ahold of and think over where they may be during the creation/gift-giving periods. This also allows you to ask questions well in advance!

Stocking Stuffers

• Will be open to EVERYONE in the server! Still focused on JANUARY!

• these will be included in a separate section on the '24-'25 season application--folks would include their prompts/ships/details and when the time comes for S.S, I would post these within that section of the Discord for anyone to work with...this in theory would mean that you can sign up for both a gift and to participate in the bonus exchange, or you just sign up for one or the other.

• Sign-up for the bonus gifts is NOT required to participate in the year's gift exchange. Nor does it mean (if you sign up for both) that you are obligated to create a bonus gift! This allows me to tally the interest in the Bonus gifts better.

Gift Exchange // Event Modifications

• This season, I encourage you to aim for more prompts. We've had a lot of incredibly specific tropes (i.e: "Lovers to Enemies", "Sharing One Bed", "Mutual Pining") the past few seasons, and while you can still suggest those, there will be a section dedicated entirely to prompts within your application (i.e: "X and Y going fishing", "X wants to cook for the night, but Y fears for their life everytime X even steps foot in the kitchen") where you must include some PROMPTS that you'd like to receive a gift based on.

• There will be a mini-event for Halloween co-hosted with KakuHida Week because i pull all the strings. Very chill, where we will share prompts between events and there will be greater flexibility with some of the traditional CHARACTER INCLUSION guidelines. More details in May--posting will occur Monday, 10/28 - Sunday, 11/3. This is an opportunity to post smaller stories, one shots, drabbles, line art, sketches--you name it. Purely existing for a good time for the Akatsuki folks.

• Many folks suggested this one; we're going to try hosting mini check-ins and questions. Why I am deleting Goodreads and maybe you should, too

I can’t remember the last time I enjoyed reading a book where my enjoyment wasn’t tied to the euphoric sense of achievement I got from finishing it. This is not because I don’t love reading, or would rather watch television. No, it’s because of a little app on my phone called Goodreads.

Home to about 90 million readers worldwide, Goodreads is a website that lets users track their reading and broadcast their tastes to the world – or, in my case, a few friends and vague acquaintances. At its core, it’s a harmless concept: an online community for bookworms, and an opportunity to discover new books your friends have loved.

It’s also extremely satisfying. Since joining Goodreads a few years ago, the annual roundup I receive tallying up the books I have finished that year has become the clinching point of my reading experience. I get a buzz from increasing my reading goal every 12 months, and from comparing how many pages I’ve turned or hours of audiobooks I’ve listened to with other people’s numbers. I feel a sense of accomplishment every time I update my “progress” with a book.

But that’s exactly what’s wrong with Goodreads: it turns reading into an achievement. Quantifying, dissecting and broadcasting our most-loved hobbies sucks the joy out of them. I find myself glancing towards the corner of the page to see how much I’ve read. I compare the thickness of the read pages I hold in my left hand to the unread ones in my right. Even when absorbed in the climax of a story, one eye is always on my proximity to the end, when I’ll be able to post it all to Goodreads.

It’s not just our reading habits that have been gamified. From our runs on Strava to the films we’ve watched on Letterboxd, there’s now a popular app to quantify all our hobbies. But with reading come the associations of intelligence and work that are not granted to our habitual consumption of other art forms; if I documented the amount of television I watch, I would feel more embarrassed than triumphant. This is why tracking my reading activity on Goodreads is far more performative than I have previously admitted to myself: I love reading, but I also love the feeling of people thinking I’m well read.

While some people’s qualms with Goodreads are rooted in its clunky interface, or the fact that it is owned by Amazon, mine lie in its very concept. Reading is something I do to relax, learn and enjoy. It’s not just that I don’t need a pie chart detailing my reading habits, the chart has poisoned the whole experience. Even if I were to switch to another book app without the social aspect, I know that I would remain obsessed with finishing books over enjoying them.

It’s human nature to get a sense of satisfaction from seeing something through to the end. But, without Goodreads, it won’t matter if I give up on a book I’m not bothered about halfway through, because no one will know or care – as if they did anyway. I won’t be self-conscious if I read yet another thriller bought in a supermarket deal, instead of something others would consider as smarter or better.

If Goodreads provides a sense of community, good recommendations and doesn’t make you obsess over what you’re reading or how much, then great. Maybe it’s just a few of us who aren’t compatible with it, and end up developing a toxic relationship that distracts from the magic of getting lost in a book. But right now I am reading my first book Goodreads-free since I installed the app. It feels just like it did when I was a child, with no awareness of what others think about what I’m reading, how quickly I’m reading it, or what I haven’t read. From now on, my reading habits are staying between me and my book.

I am reading North Queen by Nicola Tyche, first of a romantic fantasy trilogy. It’s an enjoyable read even if not groundbreaking but one thing is driving me nuts - it’s a trend in too many romantic fantasy series so I am going to use this to complain about it.

Our heroine, Norah is queen of blah blah who doesn’t have memory of anything before she was found in the woods by her hunky captain Alexander and brought back. But she’s prophesied to end the evil Shadow King who her fam hid her from.

Guess who is her endgame OTP? If you said “shadow king,” congrats you read a book in the last decade or maybe just heard of the word “book.”

Why does it drive me mad? I mean the Shadow King himself a fun character and far be it from me to not ship something because it’s unhealthy.

Because once again our FL has a choice between a hunky sweet dude who is her long term boyfriend (even if she doesn’t remember him, she’s drawn to him all over again and they are adorable together) who is devoted and fought for her and searched for her AND a dude who executed hundreds of FL’s own countrymen and then kidnapped and dragged and menaced her and plans to murder her.

I am sorry what the fucking fuck? I love fucked up dudes who did a ton of bad stuff when they live and die for FL and/or when they can atone and when playing field is emotionally equal - see Aaron Warner Anderson from Shatter Me aka my fave YA series dude ever. Man has a kill tally list the size of war and peace and is fucked enough that any therapist of his would need a therapist themselves. But he loves Juliette more than life and does anything to protect her. I can see why she picks him (not to mention she can hold her own with him.) Or a situation where it’s a harsh medieval reality and you will go with the one who can protect you and people kill each other all the time so life of peasants does not register as a consideration and not like you have other choice (see any Pargeter or Penman or Chadwick novel.) Hell, I ship Thorfinn and Groa in Dunnett’s King Hereafter and he gets to marry her after killing her previous (also arranged) husband - but that is an authentically medieval novel with medieval attitudes where they are people with attitudes of that time and are compatible to boot and Dunnett is a hell of an author.

This series is basically a glorified romance with modern attitudes and a sweet compatible guy waiting as another option. Fine she gets over king’s treatment - no accounting for taste - but the fact that she’s clearly not gonna give a fuck he murdered hundreds of her countrymen and go mmm hot is off-putting as fuck!!!!

This trend in fantasy romance lately drives me mad so thanks for reading my rant…

Greetings from me, Tap!! I’m a self-taught multifandom artist, amateur webmaster, and abstract character designer. I (plan to) post things like complete pieces, digital paintings, wips, design processes, ramblings, headcanons, maybe even trinkets I collect! We’ve got it all!!!!

Fun fact: I don’t have a pc, everything I do is on iPad.

I’ve decided expand my presence to tumblr for multiple reasons.

The Instagram algorithm is absolute ass, and trying to please it is quite impossible.

I wanted to share more things that don’t fall under the “finished pieces” umbrella that I couldn’t really post before. I mean I DO post stuff like that on my spam account, but only 2 people and a rock see it.

When it comes to my more obscure interests, it’s easier to find folk with said interests on here than probably anywhere else.

Things to Note:

What I draw is heavily based on what my autism fixates on. I wouldn’t recommend following for just one fandom since what I draw can very heavily fluctuate.

I have like. 8742578 different art styles. It fluctuates a lot and I’m always trying new shit out.

As of right now I’m new to Tumblr. Being autistic makes it kinda hard to learn UI/website etiquettes, so please be patient with me !!!

If there’s any problems with the custom theme, pls let me know!! I know there’s not too many drastic CSS changes but still. Plus I’m pretty sure the theme doesn’t even show up on mobile so fuck it we ball
