ohmygod I tried reading a hannigram fic since you talked abt it, its too much they are too much. I dont think it helps that the fic I read was from 2016 nothing against that year but its disgusting. the year not the fic. whenever he tries to be mad at mark for it mark just embarrasses him about it and uses his own words against him, like the phrases hyuck used to use to scare him as a ghost

so sometimes when hyuck wakes up in the middle of the night to get like a glass of water and mark’s probably already up doing his lil real estate work bc he’s a busy bee (pls rest soon mr fully capable!!) he’ll use this fake deep n ~scary~ voice and he’s all “WHO GOES THERE”

so come the day where they put up their decorations

chenle’s the l o u d e s t boy ever and him and jisung are both just so hyper together but they’re really fun boys

they spend the day attempting to put up the tree and lights and they blast christmas songs all evening

at one point mark jumps up onto a table to dramatically lip synch to mariah’s all i want for christmas while pointing at a mortified donghyuck

chenle and jisung can’t stop laughing bc its s o hilarious and jisung records it on the sly (bc brother duties!!) as blackmail material

donghyuck goes silent bc he is so SHY and also embarrassed

mark gives everyone second hand embarrassment 

but they still love him 

at one point mark asks donghyuck to grab the star from their room

hyuck’s like oki and heads into their room to search for it

mark quietly follows him when he’s gone and jisung and chenle share a knowing glance with each other when they see him holding a mistletoe behind his back

jisung pretends to gag while chenle only coos

donghyuck spots the star and picks it up before heading back out to the living room

just as he gets to the doorway mark’s standing there in front of him with an unreadable expression on his face  

“hey i got the star-wait what’s wrong?” he blinks, confused

mark’s lips curl upwards into a small smile as he holds up the mistletoe high in between them

donghyuck’s eyes follow the mistletoe and then to mark as he blinks in confusion, his cheeks heating up

he doesn’t know why he feels so embarrassed today

maybe he’s just overwhelmed at the idea of spending christmas with mark??

he pretends to play dumb and clears his throat, fingers curling over the star in his hands

“so..”

mark raises a brow at him, slightly dumbfounded

“what do you mean so? look!” he says, dangling the mistletoe in between them

donghyuck lets out a playful scoff before pursing his lips

“kiss me then, stupid.”

so mark does

donghyuck’s lips are soft against mark’s, they’re warm and still taste like honey, it’s still his favorite taste

they both stay like that for a while until mark lowers his arms to bring them around donghyuck’s frame, gently holding him against his chest as the younger continues to press soft kisses to his lips, fingers still clutching onto the star

mark’s hands give hyuck’s waist a gentle squeeze and all he wants to do is stay like this forever

they’re interrupted by a loud scream (surprise: it’s chenle)

later when they finally manage to decorate the tree, mark INSISTS that donghyuck put up the star just because

hyuck hates being put on the spot like this since he’s not used to it but chensung and mark are looking at him with hopeful eyes and he really loves his boyfriend so much so he’s like o ok 

jisung (as the tallest) has to give him a piggy back so that he can reach the top of the tree

as he’s putting up the star he has to stretch a lil more bc it’s so?? far away still??

and so jisung does

but donghyuck still can’t reach and so he makes the mistake of tugging at a branch 

CRASH

the fuckin tree topples over and jisung and donghyuck topple over and all their endless effort has gone to wASTE 

everyone just goes silent for like 5 seconds staring at the DISASTER that is their tree

donghyuck feels so bad bc he knows its his fault and he panics and looks at mark 

mark’s blank for a moment before he lets out the loudest snort

and soon they’re all laughing so much because it’s just so ?? funny ??

slowly they start putting the decorations and lights back onto the tree and this time mark grabs a stool for donghyuck to stand on before putting up the star

it goes right this time 

they’re all so tired and mark suggests ordering takeout but chenle and jisung already have made dinner plans to eat at this new restaurant and mark’s a lil butthurt that he wasn’t invited

they only roll their eyes and say their goodbyes as donghyuck flops onto the couch tiredly

mark takes a seat beside him “move over, lazy ass”

donghyuck huffs and proceeds to sprawl over the couch more, his head nuzzling onto mark’s lap before he glances up at his boyfriend

mark smiles fondly at him, giving his hair a little ruffle

when their dinner finally arrives, mark insists that they have to watch it that night (even though donghyuck’s complaining bc mark has work the next morning)

mark’s workplace is having a christmas party at the office and they’re each allowed to invite one guest 

so o f c o ur s e mark has to bring his boo

donghyuck’s already met most of his boyfriends colleagues and he’s really really fond of sicheng (whose internship has now ended and is a full employee at the company)

they play cheesy christmas games and wear crowns and boss taeil gets super hyper it’s hilarious

he spends the evening ganging up on mark with his colleagues 

mark also ends up drinking a lil and he gets kinda tipsy (really mark?? on wine??) and he’s all red and tired and clinging to hyuck the entire time

they make out secretly in taeil’s office when mark says he wants to show hyuck a ‘document’

mark’s a clingy drunk and donghyuck finds it so adorable

donghyuck doesn’t have his permit yet and mark is not allowed to drive while drunk (no drink-driving, kids!) so they have to get jaehyun to drop them home who will drop mark’s car over later on

mark’s being all touchy when they get home that night and hyuck’s like p le as e as he tries to help his boyfriend out of his shoes 

that night they end up cuddling with donghyuck being the big spoon

when they wake up however, mark’s worried about his lil baby’s arms getting numb and he immediately pulls hyuck into his arms, brushing gentle kisses to his temple

they spend christmas eve with mark’s family back at his parents home

jisung has invited chenle over and one of his cousins jeno has invited his boyfriends jaemin and renjun over too

they all get along with donghyuck (esp mark’s mother she absolutely a d o r e s him and treats him like her own son)

donghyuck’s shy again because!! family!! so mark squeezes his hand under the table and gives him reassuring glances the whole evening

hyuck sticks to his side the whole night and at one point mark’s mother calls him into the kitchen to help with dessert

when he goes in she gives him a big hug and tells him she loves him and kisses his forehead 

donghyuck bursts into tears right there bc suddenly he misses his parents and he’s never experienced being with family before and he’s just super overwhelmed

she tells him that she’s happy that mark has found someone like him and that her son is lucky

in his head he thinks its the other way around

mark’s watching them from the doorway, an overjoyed expression on his face bc he’s so happy and he just sniffles silently

they sleep in mark’s childhood bedroom that night and mark shares stories about his childhood 

the bed they’re on isn’t exactly for two people so there’s a spare mattress on the floor 

donghyuck insists he’ll take the floor but then decides it’s too cold despite all the blankets

he climbs onto the bed and sprawls onto his boyfriend’s chest while he’s asleep

mark groans, playfully teasing him about being heavy before pressing his lips to donghyuck’s nose and bringing his arms around him

the next morning mark’s awake first and he’s so !!! excited !!! because it’s christmas !!

he shakes hyuck awake (who actually woke up before him but pretended to be asleep) and plants a kiss square onto his lips

donghyuck groans playfully about his morning breath and they end up getting into a brief pillow fight until there’s a knock on the door

as they get dressed into their christmas sweaters again, donghyuck pulls his boyfriend towards by the hem of his sleeve

“what’s up?” mark asks

donghyuck leans over to kiss his boyfriend once more, fingers gently lacing with mark’s before he pulls away

“thank you for all of this, really” he whispers, eyes twinkling

mark just looks at his boyfriend with the s w e e te s t gaze, arms coming to wrap around donghyuck

Group Picture Vol. 7 liner notes - 

Jake Lee - Bleeding Gum Murphy’s Jake Lee makes his triumphant return to Group Picture after a two year absence and the treasure is worth the wait! Jake blesses us with his characteristic upbeat opener set to clear-headed and introspective lyrics. He even manages to throw in an almost spanish sounding acoustic guitar lead? Welcome back Jake!

Little Cousin - The classic yet elusive duo of Walter and Milk come back with this strange and smooth track about burning ponies? Not really sure what to say about this one but I love Milk’s beats even when they are simple and jazzy like this and Walter’s experimenting with some new styles so props to trying I guess.

Weston Bookhouse - Weston is back with this calming and catchy piece about reflecting on his life and love while driving a country road. His voice is clean and clear, the shaker is fast and steady, and that outro when he sings both up and down the octave is probably the catchiest bit I’ve ever heard him write. I got the chills the first, second, and third time I heard this song. Rumor has it he is going to record the next album in 2018 in Walter’s garage!

Slaughter Beach, Dog - A Group Picture staple at this point, and the songwriter behind my favorite album of the year, Jake Ewald seems to be able to pump out heartfelt songs like a pathos machine, and of course this tune is no different. The arrangements of this song are fun and interesting and I love his love for slide guitar.

Milk Flud - Who? Ya the beat seems pretty chill but honestlyI don’t understand the motorbike metaphor at all. Is this guy ok? Who is Max? Was that a lyric about a german shepherd in a muzzle? The thing I love about MNE is that they give a platform to the little guys like this Flud character.

Chain - Woah! Chain is a Portland band that I’ve seen play live before but this is my first time hearing a recording and woah! The music and production are so unique and Teal’s voice is like candy. I can’t wait to hear more from them and I really hope they stick around the mne world for a little while so their creativity can rub off on me a little.

Cool American - Cool American is probably Portland’s coolest band. Their cynical wit and fuzzy charm leaves every listener intrigued and wishing they lived in Portland to have a beer with them. I’m really glad they came back to GP cause I want to be associated with them when they blow up.

Sour Guy - Well this has to be the absolute best song ever written about a grad student grading papers. While this might seem like a simple acoustic song, it’s really impressive the way Kris Schobert can clearly express the frustration of spending a whole day grading papers of kids who did not at all learn the subject matter (physics!) that he so passionately tried to teach to them. Love you, Kris. I would love to take your class and I wouldn’t be on my phone!

Banned From Japan - Earl from Banned From Japan is a sweet and genuine valley rat who has admittedly never listened to any bands besides NOFX. And, Earl, that is ok with us! This punk gem not only slaps but makes me want to delete my social media and live a more wholesome life. Welcome to MNE and Group Picture, Banned From Japan!

Alex Maddox - Our childhood friend with the voice that screams major label shoe-in is currently gearing up to ditch his job and live in a van traveling around Europe, surfing and following spiritual gurus. Perhaps Houston Graves is the person he felt he was turning into. Perhaps I am totally wrong. But I am right in saying this song is equally easy on the ears as it is introspective and I feel blessed to have Alex in my life and on Group Picture since its early days.

Benjamin Ward - It was a hard year for certain people in our music community. There were several deaths and Benny experienced one directly on his Hemingway tour. With that in mind, this song is absolutely heart breaking and cathartic. Usually known for dark metaphors and understated lyrics, Benny comes softly with candid words and a direct message - “I’m just glad I had you in my life / And I will carry you and the things you do until I die.” Beautiful, Benny.

Isabel Zacharias - So I was at Russell’s house meeting his new roommate Isabel for the first time this fall and we sang Wilco and Mountain Goats songs together. Then she played this song and I was floored. I told her about Group Picture and said she had to be on it. Now I am so grateful I had some caffeine that morning and had the gumption to be so forward because now I get to enjoy her poetic lyrics and soulful tune whenever I want.

The Sal Show - Sal from Animal City! Finally a funny track on Group Picture this year! But if you follow the lyrics, they actually convey a pretty ridiculous distant concept - a bad kid magician? - and it does not only make sense but its funny! Kudos to Sal if he ever reads this. The dude can write a tune.

Jeremy Murphy - The guy in Riled and Chain, Jeremy wowed the world with his “cranberries in the cosmos” song last year and now he has topped himself! This song is weird and cool! I would say more but Jeremy and I made a bet over a game of pool and he lost and he actually owes me a personal song. So I will hold my tongue until I hear that tune!

Dakota Loesch - The other mastermind behind Animal City and Lemp Lungs, Dakota is becoming a staple of group picture and that makes me feel blessed. This year he brings us a poetic Americana tune that makes me feel three things 1. honestly kinda sexy (must be that beat and the deep bass?) 2. Kinda melancholy! (not sure why) and 3. Dakota can we party together???

Emo Dreamboat - Ben Ward of Hemingway collabs with Milk and damn this song is a true emo pop song! Ben’s voice sounds soothing and dark and Milk’s beat is moody and intricate. Is this a collab that is gunna last or is this a one off Group Picture track? I really hope they do the album cause Ben can float over a beat like an experienced rapper and we all know Milk is capable of endless beats.

Byronius Punk - Ian Farmer, the dark horse of Modern Baseball, has always had a knack for songwriting and a great voice but it was hidden behind his role as “humble bassist” in the band. His track this year comes under the new moniker Byronius Punk and makes me want to stare out the window on a gray and snowy east coast day and just fall asleep on my desktop until summer arrives.

Grimy Baby - Naka G, from Weston Bookhouse and a past touring member of Walter Etc., keeps the slop tradition of MNE alive with this smokey bluesy gem. Probably recording everything in his bedroom in Santa Cruz, Naka sings about a “sleepless luxury” but honestly Naka if this how you function without sleep then I think you’re doing fine homie.

Chase Hoyt - Usually known for guitar shredding in Ubu Roi or Chaz and the Minions of Chaz, Chase takes a new disco styled approach with his contribution to this year’s comp. A disco song would usually seem annoying but this song sounds like Ozzy or Alice Cooper made a lo-fi disco song and that is obviously awesome. Also, note the shredding that still takes place and put some headphones and listen to those bass lines!

Humphrey Orlando - Our whiskey drinking story teller Humphrey is a classic mne and Group Picture stable. He claims he wrote this song in 5 minutes but he manages to squeeze as much soul as anyone feels in a lifetime into this scrappy minute and a half gem.

Melancholy Quinoa - The infamous rap group featuring Alex Crawford, Kyle B Hart, Ben Ward, Your Homie D, and Milk Flud, made their debut last year with a song about hot boxing a jungle gym. Well, they are back blending the Emo Dreamboat’s smooth vox, Crawford’s crass lyrics about masturbating, Kyle singing for the first time, and Milk’s trap tendencies. Honestly, this slaps!!!

Daddy Collin - The figurehead behind Snow Roller and voted Portland’s “Easiest Guy to Fall in Love With” is back this year under a solo moniker. Does this mean a solo career is in the works? Snow Roller released “XXL”, one of my fav albums of the year, this summer and Collin seems to still be climbing to his peak. I got the chills when he sings “i hope you still consider me a friend”. I do, Collin, I do.

Peanut Butter Cups - Aaron Kovacs from Lauren Records does this lo-fi project that pretty much only exists on Group Picture and I really think he needs to make a full album! His songs are fuzzy, lovely, and sad and make me feel something. Please Peanut Butter Cups, give us the full candy bar!

Walter Etc. - This one is just Walter alone, singing about being on a boat or something. Honestly, it sounds like all his other songs and I can’t relate to his love of the open sea, but hey this tune is kinda catchy!

Isaac never knew that you would be the one that everyone kept talking about. You first knew Isaac from history. You saw him grow. He started out as that shy kid that no one really paid that much attention to. Then suddenly he became this complicated hotstuff,who thought he immediately was superior to others. Before returning back to his old self.

He approached you to help him with his history since you were one of the better students in class. There were the top students,so you had no idea why he picked you to be his tutor.

Countless of study sessions later,it was finally time for the exam. Time to see if all those tutoring sessions was worth it at all.

When he got the test back the next day,he looked for you since you weren't in class. He was so excited to tell you he aced it. He eventually found you in the field,just about to leave.

And ever since then,you've both been together.

Honestly to you,you thought that it would be those silly high school crushes that'll last about a month or two. But you both just proved each other wrong. You thought you'd bore him eventually but you didn't. Even after he's known about you past,as you with his,he still stuck by you.

It seemed unreal to you,to have someone as caring as Isaac. As for Isaac,it was unreal to him that you love him unconditionally.

It was your 4th anniversary with Isaac. You thought Isaac didn't have plans tonight and you were perfectly fine with staying in,watching movies,pigging out. Well,your boyfriend thought otherwise. You were in the living room channel surfing when he came back.

“I’m bringing you out tonight.” He said as he shut the door.

“okay.” you smiled up at him.

“don’t need to wear anything too fancy though,its going to be more how do the kids these days say it,chill?” He said coming over to you to give you a kiss.

You laughed. “sure.” So you switched off the tv and went to change into something more presentable. Once you were done,it was Isaac's turn to change as he was making some food. "we're going stargazing?"

"how'd you know?"

"i was gonna say picnic but its like 8pm so what kind of picnic would it be?"

"picnics could be for any time of the day you know."

"but we humans put it in a way that picnics are for the day time."

"but then again time is a man made construct." Isaac replied winking at you.

"that sounds familiar eh?" you laughed you helped him pack the light snacks he made.

"shall we?" Isaac then held out his hand to you. You nodded and off you both headed to his favourite spot.

It was up in the hills somewhere,not too noisy too. It had a nice view of the little houses that stood below. So you and isaac laid out the mat and settled down. You both sat there,eating,talking and eventually star gazing.

"this reminds me of our 1st anniversary." you said,your head in his lap. "when you found out i really wanted to go stargazing."

"ha yeah,i never knew that was your kind of stuff,im glad i did bring you that day. i'll never forget that little glisten in your eyes as you just laid down and watched the stars." He said looking down at you.

"i really love you,you know." you smiled looking at him.

"i know. i love you too." he grinned. And so you both just continued to watch the stars light up the night sky,in silence,soft music playing in the background.

As the current song ended,your song played. Isaac stood up and held out his hand to you. You gave him a look but took stood up with him anyway.

He held you close to him as you both started swaying to the song. It wasn’t even fit for a slow dance but you did anyway,anything to be in his arms. You eventually just pulled away from him to give him a special musical number as he just laughed at you.

When you said you looked a mess,

I whispered underneath my breath, but you heard it,

"you know," you said halfway before isaac interrupted you.

"no i don't actually." he smiled as he looked down at you.

You just gave him a glare,slowly breaking because you couldn’t help but smile when he smiles. “that i hate you?”

“babe,that can’t be possible! half an hour ago you were just telling me you love me!” he said feigning a hurt face. You laughed at him playing along.

“i wanted to tell you that lately i haven’t felt pretty?”

“baby,-“

This time you interrupted him. “i know its like stupid,its been bothering me this week? i hope this is period feelings because i feel stupid as hell for getting upset over that.” you chuckled. "i look how i feel." you chuckled again,averting your gaze towards the stars.

“you look perfect tonight baby.” he said rather softly. Almost too soft for you to hear. But you did anyway.

“i am so blessed to have you,isaac lahey.”

In a relationship,there’s bound to be fights,big ones and small ones. But despite those obstacles in the relationship,at the end of the day you knew it was because you love each other. 

Recently you’d say you had a pretty big fight. Well to you at least. You haven’t been in the best of moods this week. With work stuff,all you’ve been lately is stressed. Mostly at yourself. 

So when you got home you released all the pent up anger you had against whoever on Isaac. And you immediately felt bad. He didn’t deserve this. You went a whole day not talking to him because you felt bad and he didn’t bring it up either. You were one to keep it to yourself until you felt that its the right time to apologise. Isaac has known you long enough to know that. So one day he picked you up from work. You walked back home to your shared apartment. It was a decent 5 minute walk so you decided this was the best time to apologise. 

“I’m sorry for releasing my anger on you. I swear i didn’t mean to and you know me,too scared to apologise immediately. I’ll work on that eventually.” You said as you played with your fingers. It was a nervous habit. “i literally feel like such an asshole.” 

Isaac didn’t say anything at first. He just took one of your hands and held it. He then gave it a reassuring squeeze. “You’re perfectly fine,darling.” He smiled as you looked up at him. 

“yeah?” 

“we’re fine.”

“im really sorry. i can’t-” 

“we’re still growing,it takes time to make something a habit,you’ll get there.” he smiled. “we’re going to be alright.” 

You really thought this man was too good for you. Even with everything he’s been through. 

I have faith in what I see, now I know I have met an angel in person and she looks perfect, I don't deserve this.

Everytime Isaac glanced at you or looked at you,he felt happy. A feeling he hasn't felt in a long time. Often you'd catch him staring at you. He thought to himself that if an angel was a person it would be you. He even told you once. And honestly you didn't feel like one.

Sometime he looks at you,and the way you love him and care for him,he felt like he didn't deserve this. It felt too good to be true for him. He truly didn’t know what he did to deserve someone as amazing as you.
