i saw this tweet and found it interesting for two reasons. one is that some people base how good cartoon network would be to toh by how it treated su, and despite the fact that su’s treatment by the network was considered poor at the time, now its thought to be exceptionally good in comparison to modern shows.
two is how exactly su got impacted by a limited budget. a common criticism is how characters like connie, peridot, and lapis are left out of missions. but balancing a lot of characters is not only hard but also costly (extra animation, extra voices—it’s been revealed that the show is limited to a set number of characters per episode otherwise they’re over budget). animation mistakes are not uncommon since retakes cost extra. the entire reason the original show got cut short was due to loss of funding!
#i don’t know if pay rates differ per networks#but a.ivi and s.urrashu have said that they needed to work outside of su in order to make sufficient funds#it only makes me wonder what other ways su suffered from a lower budget#that we as the audience never got to see#in the vein of the too-little characters complaint#another part of that is that low-stakes episodes should’ve been abt the main cast instead of the townies#like last one out of beach city and too short to ride vs restaurant wars and kiki’s pizza delivery service#i definitely see that especially since that isn’t budget related#nor would it seem to be network related (even if cn had an ‘episodic episodes’ quota it could still be abt the gems#(another side note: /would/ cn even have a requirement that the show make episodes that can be watched standalone?#this is a question for the people who were around when su was airing#what episodes often got rerun?#was it the townie eps or the lore eps?#for example i heard that su once did a ‘peridot event’ where they just reran peridot episodes#which had eps that skip around in the show#did they even care about airing the story so that it made sense anyways?#id get it if the low stakes townie episodes were the ones getting rerun))#but i have such a boring view on that which is i think it’s simply because the creators like townie eps#like in interviews r.ebecca s.ugar has said she’s the type to be really invested in background characters#answers in interviews have been crafted in ways to hide what’s really going on though tbf#prime example of this is rebecca and ian saying the wedding being interrupted was meant to follow the common trope#when later in the art book they said that it was bc cn rejected the ep bc it ‘wasn’t interesting enough’#both could simultaneously be true! it’s a psychology thing though where people make up nice-sounding explanations behind what they create#in retrospect because they want it to be thought out in such a nice way they believe in it#the bigger problem is that not matter how many episodes there are of them#it can be hard for ppl to be invested in the townies the same way they are invested in the main cast#i’m sure that a million writers have made surefire advice on how to get an audience to care about characters#but off the top of my head i think it’s because 1. most don’t have strong motivations to get truly invested in#(exception is ronaldo but people find him too annoying to care about him)#okay i had more points and explanations but i hit the tag limit and idk if anyone is actually reading this so bye

I am going to again mention that Hikaru No Go cdrama adaptation Qi Hun is on youtube for free (iqiyi), really really good, and if you ever shipped the two rivals to partners then the cdrama decides well They Do Too and cranks it to Bad Buddy childhood rivals to desperately longing for each other to domestic and professional partners levels. (I'm not kidding, to spoil the ending out of context: they move in together with one bed, play partner go for future career, and end the show together happy). And yes, our ghost friend still absolutely decimated me emotionally. <3 ;-;
Anyway I just. While it's absolutely amazing as a show on simply the merit of quality, pacing, good storyline, solid story it's based on And solid adaptation that kept things true while putting it's own touches? It's also really really heartfelt if you like childhood enemies/friends to partners stories. And it feels as bl as Guardian or Word of Honor did, easily (so clearly shippers helped make the show lol).

#cant believe i missed this one when i specifically rewatched the whole season for this :')#trigun#vash#vash the stampede#trigun stampede#trigunedit#mine#gif:trigun#so i thought the reflective effect appeared in more episodes but it was only episode 1#and then it kinda reappears when vash is not vash anymore in eps 11-12#the first episode had a lot of bright lights (desert sun and then the lights from the plants)#which made the reflection seem natural to happen but it was interesting it happened quite a lot as a storytelling tool almost#like it helped to push across this introduction of vash bc at first we dont know anything about him (first time fans like me heh)#so they hide his eyes in important moments including his first appearance#and it goes possibly for how that reflection is how vash doesnt know meryl or roberto yet so it takes a while for him to trust them#and see whats their deal#i like that 7th gif with comparison of rosa beside vash.. you can see her go on a whole journey with just her eyes#but vash's thought process is hidden until the last moment where he doesnt want to fight the julai guys who want to take him#the last one is so creepy.. he's an empty husk! there could be pain or numbness or multiple other emotions in his eyes#but the glasses put them behind a barrier and only the movement tells us more that hes floating there trapped emotionless#its so sad.. uff i love this show

Honestly? Did I want more from DTAMHD? Yes, I did. I wanted something signifying actual progression for Dennis' character (even just a crumb of genuine growth) , and I sincerely don't think we got that. However... we did get a fascinating insight into the process of his mind. Dennis' level of self-denial is so ironic and profound. He can't acknowledge the inevitability that he's middle-aged.
(I swear this episode honestly has given me an alt hc, that the show is based in his mind; because logistically, a man of his lifestyle and malnourishment could not commit the feats he is constantly sailing through. TGGB & DTAMHD... back-to-back? What happened to his hand? Did he even sprain it? Or is he just the most dramatic brat in the gang - clearly the latter.)
It is important to note that he didn’t fix the actual problem. He momentarily masked the symptoms, but ignore long-term help with blood pressure medicine is not going to fix the issue, nor is it going to protect him from fucking keeling over in a stressful situation (when he's not in a contained and quiet Doctor's exam room) and his blood pressure spikes.
I'm honestly a little jaded at this point (16 Fucking Seasons of crumbs, y'all), but if one were to continue 'trusting the structure' this episode conveyed a lot.
The B Plot: The pressure cooker. The metaphor parallels the building pressure Dennis quick-tempered bouts of rage. So, to toss out a little 'cat-in-the-wall' conjecture here: The pressure cooker is Dennis, but we all saw him eat that bloody diamond in the end and we all heard Mac's speech about coal turning into diamonds under massive pressure. Dennis' experience is a theory of pressure, he daydreams it all in the span of a minute or so. He's roleplaying with hypothetical obstacles. There's no risk. Maybe Dennis, isn't the pressure cooker, but the coal.
If I were to try and take anything hopeful out of this episode, it would be the way the narrative is showing us that this episode acknowledged that Dennis isn't ready yet. It's not his turn to break. It's going to take real, substantial pressure to get that diamond.
It was a hell of a misdirect (and honestly a little bit of a slap in the face), but if these characters live in the real world, where people are bound by the laws of mortality, then Dennis should have his time.
Genuinely, who fucking knows?
I'm not hating on the episode. We all know this is the trashy dick joke sitcom. I just thought that if Mac & Charlie could have moments of genuine heartbreak, culminating in deep catharsis, that maybe Dennis could have that too.... but no.
Can't wait to see the sunny dudebros miss the point & proclaim Dennis Reynolds - SA victim, traumatized individual with an emotionally tumultuous personality disorder - the new Andrew Tate.
I'm sorry, but yeah. I'm a little miffed. It was all a dream, and everything goes Dennis' way. Y'all I'm fucking tired. This was a great episode for Glenn, but a fucking frustrating episode for Dennis. I may have wanted a little macden, but all I cared about was seeing Dennis face the limitations of his mortality, to see that he's failing his body and his brain. He didn't have to actually take the medicine (I wouldn't expect him to), but Goddammit, everything seems to work out in his delusional favor. So, of course he's going to continue being delusional, and probably only change for the worse.
I'll say it: I wanted a broken Dennis, and we did not get that. He didn't even crack, the unbearble and apparently now canonical Golden God. That episode's title was intended to tease sunnyblr.
Excuse the plethora of tags. I just kept getting more irritated.
#what i take from the episode is further insight to the lengths of Dennis' repression which adds to my fic#iasip s16#i will say this: i can't dislike this episode solely because of how phenomenal glennjamin's performance was.#I'd say I'm retracting the title of macden 'truther'. I'm still a stan. but this ep made me realize dennis is too coddled by the narrative#with TGGB he's constantly winning. even the game he doesn't stay to watch the end of. his body performing near miracles. wtf#the real reason I'm seriously bothered is the sunny dudebros. they already idolize dennis#this ep has only made it worse because the obvious point of Dennis' actual delusions will go right over their heads.#anybody with a grounded sense of reality can tell you that dennis did not solve a problem#he dreamt up a scenario in some kind of toxic meditation session. he's getting older. and his denial is metastasizing#Dennis' denial isn't sustainable. I'm kind of cutting off my investment in that regard. he's a fucking mess & he's currently being idolized#dennis reynolds#definitely not my favorite episode. not bc of lack of macden. a little bc Den needs limitations. mainly bc 'it was all a dream' is cheap#ranting.excuse me for wanting 1 of my fave characts actually have his poor health.self-destructive coping mechanism/trauma acknowledged#can't believe i was actually afraid i wouldn't be able to write because too much might happen in DTAMHD...! 🤣#it should've all happened. but instead ended w/him getting charges pressed when he tried to break into ceo's home#ngl. this one hurt. Honestly, I really feel like whatever Sorkin writes is only as good as his actors. His writing has massive flaws, even with how catchy and snarky and fun and lyrical it can be, but depending on who you cast, it really fills the gap between “talking head doing incredibly pretentious dialogue” and “actual character you should care for” and kind of hides the flaws. Yes, this is the start of my ramble on why The West Wing works while The Newsroom doesn’t, despite both shows being … very flawed LOL

I caught up on all of the spy x family manga and there won't be more until Feb but that also means I'll have to wait weekly for updates going forward, fuck
#spy x family#anyway the manga is really good. the anime is like a perfect adaptation & i love it. so far of what they covered there was only 1 storyline#they skipped. but whats happened since has been soooo good. like ive been saying repeatedly to my partner how much i love how#anti war the story is in a compassionate way that explains theres no black n white. then i got to loids backstory chap & damn it was heavy#ALSO love that i was like ''oh there hasnt been much romance (not that i mind). loids in denial & yor is oblivious tho'' & then i read the#manga & WOW hes REALLY in denial sometimes & shes REALLY oblivious other times. its still a complete slow burn buildup but#there are quite a few more moments towards twiyor. also damanya? idk their ship name but omfg theyre SO FUNNY anya is SO FUNNY#like obvious insert of ''shipping literal first graders does feel weird'' here but they have a really funny dynamic & i love the kid chars#a lot theyre all really funny & fairly well fleshed out while still being believably immature little kids. anyway sxf v good#also bond my beloved i sobbed watching his eps in the anime hes a very good boy#tc posts

What is fucking me up is that Sam Reid himself wanted a trigger warning for the episode but not a single soul in production listened to him.
Honestly if the ep had trigger warnings was one of the first things I asked my friends about the episode. Because I believe very strongly in them, I always have them on my fics to the point that my friends will make fun of me for it (just in a good way, they think salamander being tagged was funny, not in a shitty way). But anything I even mildly think could upset someone I will tag it because I have a rare a weird phobia and so I know what it's like for life to be a minefield. Domestic abuse is something so commonly upsetting that anyone with common sense should know to fucking add a warning for.
Can ask where the source for Sam Reid wanting a trigger warning is tho? I'm not doubting you, I've seen multiple ppl saying this. I just feel weird and conflicted about Sam Reid bc he seems to deeply love the character of Lestat but then portrayed him like that. In the AMC podcast he said he didn't want to say anything bad about Lestat bc he loves the character too much. He also said everything Lestat does is out of love (which the host rightly shut him down for). Now with the context of ep 5 I want to shake him down and ask what the hell. I just have felt like my current Louis icon or the ben affleck smoking meme these past 2 days
