Unpopular Opinion
I don’t support the creator, Emily Youcis or her beliefs at all, but I will admit, that as someone who has been through similar circumstances, Alfred’s Playhouse is a very accurate representation of dealing with abuse, and I appreciate it for that reason. The art style is pretty good too.

i hate the fact that alfreds playhouse will probably be one of the only more accurate depictions of extreme mental illness and the effects of SA we will ever get in media

Alfred's Playhouse Commentary.
Alfred's playhouse is a vent show I recently discovered made by Emily Youcis. I will be addressing the actual content of the show before I move on to my opinion on Emily herself so please hold fire until the end because I KNOW what you're thinking.
TRIGGER WARNING - CSA, SH, CHILD ABUSE, NAZISM, GRAPHIC IMAGERY.
(Not all these themes are discussed in my post but you should be aware of these before watching the show)
Alfred's Playhouse features main character Alfred, who is a dog described in the introduction song as desperately attempting to escape his painful reality. I agree that it is genuinely disturbing, but I'd like to address its vague poignancy and how it deals with its themes.
In the first episode, we see what I think (as a survivor myself) to be the most accurate representation of how it feels to be sexually assaulted I've ever seen. The moment where everything is odd and numb and quiet followed by pure panic and rage.
The first episode also displays mental instability incredibly well. I've struggled with my mental health for the past six years and honestly the scenes where Alfred just rambles about essentially nothing at all, addressing an imagined audience, accurately represents what feels like the descent into madness many mentally ill people are convinced they go through. The thought that you've lost your mind is an extremely painful one and Alfred's Playhouse depicts that with surprising levels of accuracy.
Episode two, however, is essentially just this massive showcase of Alfred brutally harming himself. Though it portrays the very common desperate desire for attention many people experience when they struggle with self harm, myself included, I feel the level of gore is a little gratuitous, displaying Alfred almost bleeding to death from the wounds he's inflicted upon himself. That being said, it is a vent show so I see why Youcis made the decision. She never really made it for other people it was a way to make herself feel better. Then again, it was her decision to post it publicly.
Episode three essentially explains the whole show from a weirder perspective and honestly I don't want to go into it since I have so much to say and it's quarter past 11 at night and I have college tomorrow, but it is a good episode with the context of the show.
Overall, though it is important for assault victims and mentally ill people to have content in which they feel seen, I feel Youcis should have toned her work down a little before posting it. However, the Internet was a wild west in 2007.
Now onto Youcis herself, I feel it is incredibly unjustified to attribute her current political views to the show. She fell down the alt-right pipeline after publishing Alfred's Playhouse. This is almost definitely because of her downward spiral. It's not uncommon for groups like the alt-right to target vulnerable people like Emily. She has so clearly been crying for help for years and, though there's no excuse for her words or actions, I feel you should take her art for what it is rather than apply a made up meaning to it. The depictions of Nazis in the show - I think - are more a commentary on her childhood trauma and the themes of the show, Alfred feeling his life is dictated by someone/something else. While there's definitely better content in the genre and in general, the massive controversy surrounding Alfred's Playhouse is - in my opinion - unwarranted and really just watch it with an open mind and separate it from current Emily because she wasn't like she is now when she made it. Instead of hating on the present, understand the past and don't be overly shocked when mentally ill people do fucked up shit, especially when they've received the kind of backlash Emily Youcis faced.
Final disclaimer- I don't support her actions I hope she burns I just want people to understand things how they actually happened yk?

alfred's playhouse before the movie was genuinely amazing. emily youcis is incredibly intelligent in the way she could acknowledge her mental state, especially in an animated form. the n@zi and stalin references and wtvr else were edge lord but she was like 16 in 2010. i hate seeing her fall down the alt right pipeline. a lot of isolated and ridiculed kids in their formative years. of course, alt right n@zis are horrible, im not saying they're not, but it's so sad to see these kids fall into the grip of nazi-ism online. it's the only community they feel like the can join and over time they start to take on these ideas. i believe if emily youcis had received help, whether it be from herself (if that even would've been possible) or from someoen else we would have a super intelligent and creative artist today. alfred's playhouse conveyed the aftermath of SA so well and the uncomfortable vibe from it goes the audience somewhat of the same feeling that she is.
i just really wish emily could've (or will) receive help.
a lot of these vulnerable kids teenagers fall into extremist parts of the internet and it's so sad to see. the adults are intentionally (maybe even unintentionally) grooming them into little extremists and further isolating them from people, continuing the cycle.

I pray you aren’t an Alfred’s playhouse fan just bc how problematic it and fhe lady who made it is, especially after the created worked on where the dead go to die, which had literal animated beastiality
I'm not a fan cus I haven't watched it yet LMAO, dw I was planning to pirate it as to not give money to the creator, plus like. The creator would hate my guts. I'm a queer person she don't want my being-a-fan just as much as I don't want to be
I want to watch it mostly after watching this summary vid of it on YouTube (link here, its a good watch), to get my own opinion of it. From the described style it sounds like something I'd enjoy, I like absurdist and disturbing works, and from what I've gleaned, the first few videos do have minor redeeming qualities
Also I thought that she didn't work on it, she was just friends w/ the creator of it? Which, ofc, also not great, but like. I'd like to clarify if I'm wrong or not lmao
May be an unpopular opinion but people are very very scared to be seen as problematic nowadays and like. Why. The content you consume means nothing of your person if consumed in a thoughtful way. If you don't consume problematic content, you'd never consume any media ever
Tldr I don't support a neo-nazi cus I wanted to draw her oc in a gay relationship with Courage The Cowardly Dog

I saw Alfred's playhouse a few nights ago, it was like a fever dream, but it was probably because I was filled w/ monster energy cans, stress and I had trouble sleeping the nights before so I was mentally suffering
Anyway, not the point, what I want to ask is, why is people SO aggressive towards this specific series?
Tumblr was supposed to be a safe space for people w/ trauma about almost anything, people could post their drawings and vents and people would comfort them and say "omg same" and stuff like that
Since when we aren't allowed to like """problematic""" content to cope w/ the shit we had to live through? If some mf suffers cause of their csa, their s/h, they CAN search for things that make it easier to live with that, trauma never really goes away, it lives with you, eats you from the inside, and most of these kids don't even have the money for therapy
Shit, if you have a problem w/ naz11 symbolism I understand, we all do have a problem w/ it, but just because some creator is a naz11 mf that didn't have the help they needed but had created certain type of content that makes the abused comforted, you shouldn't take that away from them, it's obvious they're not there for that symbolism.
Since when art had to be censored? Art is supposed to disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed
Even political shit can be made into art, I hate political stuff, I really do, but just because some creator did something awful doesn't mean we can't cope with the things they created
As long as you're not a naz11 mf you get to cope and consume whatever you want, and If you don't like the series, just block the tags in every social media, but don't you dare try to censor others just because it "makes you uncomfy"

Maybe this is just me, but am I the only one who kind of rolls their eyes when I see anti's who are in "problematic" fandoms talk about separating the art from the artist?
For example: There have been a few allegations against Emily Youcis (the creator of Alfred's Playhouse) that claim she's transphobic. Considering I'm not in the fandom and don't even know her, this would be something I wouldn't even care about, except on TikTok I'm seeing people make fanart and edits of the series with disclaimers saying that they "don't support Youcis" and talk about how much they hate her but love the series... When the whole point of the series is that it's a vent piece about the creator's trauma, and I feel like it's one of those circumstances where it's impossible to really seperate the art from the artist
To me, it kind of just comes across as virtue signalling, and like they have to reassure other anti's that they're totally not problematic

AWEEWE THANK YOU
It's a web series that people find disturbing Abt the creator is a bad person so people hate it. It's not that bad though. Personal I'm confused if it's a vent show or not cuz I remember the creator saying bot

Hey!! Are you a proshipper? Are you an anti? Please read this post, I want engagement from as many people of as many different opinions as possible!
I have a question that I made a temporary sideblog for because I’ve gotten completely different answers depending on who I ask this question (pro vs anti ship)
I fundamentally disagree with a lot of the “talking points” on either side, so I’m not really sure which camp I fit into (and the one I’m assigned usually changes to the opposite of whoever I’m talking to). So I thought it’d be really interesting to see what people have to say about this. I dunno, I like talking, and discussing media. Talk to me about media.
I’ve sorted these into two sections: opinions usually grouped with “proshippers” and opinions usually grouped with “antis.”
Proship Opinions:
Censorship is bad.
We should not censor the internet and banning legal content here is fruitless. It just doesn’t work, and it takes away efforts from restricting actually harmful content.
Harassment is also bad.
Even when the person being harassed is objectively disgusting and vile.
There is never any excuse to tell someone to kill themself. This feels so obvious, why are we even arguing this.
Restricting the content allowed on some sites (AO3) is kinda stupid.
FF.net and Wattpad are living examples of what happens when you restrict written content: it still gets in, but this time completely untagged and with no warning.
I hate AO3’s current policy and I don’t use the site because of that, but the alternative is so much worse, especially considering they can’t afford the extensive mod team that would require.
Just use the block button.
Getting all bent out of shape in someone’s askbox because of their content is completely pointless. You just exhaust yourself and waste your own energy thinking about this person when they definitely don’t give a fuck what you, some bitch on the internet, think of their content.
The easiest solution for your own wellbeing is just to block them and move on. Then you can never think about them again.
Fictional content is never the same as the real thing, and it’s insulting to survivors to insinuate it is.
No children are harmed by the creation of fictional content. Comparing it to real CP is a slap in the face to real survivors.
The concept of “problematic content” being bad by design is kinda dumb.
There are ways to handle anything in fiction tastefully. Your story can cover topics of sexual abuse, murder, exploitation, etc. without being “problematic.”
The reason for the content’s creation and posting greatly changes how it should be viewed and how the creator should be treated.
I’m reminded of Alfred’s Playhouse. It’s so obviously a cry for help, but everyone ignored it because of the gross and shocking subject matter shown. The creator is a disgusting person, but that is unrelated to her creation of Alfred’s Playhouse, a representation of her own real experiences.
It’s… So obvious to me when someone is suffering and using art to vent or call for help. These people aren’t the people we should be talking about when we discuss the handling of sensitive topics in fiction.
Anti Opinions:
The things you create/enjoy completely change the way I view you as a person, fundamentally.
I don’t think you can be a good person and enjoy thinking about fictional children being molested.
I cut people off if I find out they secretly enjoy this content.
Including ex-friends. It hurts and I feel betrayed, but I was not friends with, nor will I ever be friends with, someone who enjoys (whatever).
I think people deserve to know if one of their favorite artists is secretly into something reprehensible.
If a big artist I like had a secret twitter where they posted incest porn, I would be pissed if someone who knew didn’t tell me.
AO3 sucks.
Specifically because of their policy on RPF in reference to (underage) streamers. If someone requests that the NSFW content featuring them be deleted, AO3 should delete it. If someone goes to AO3 and requests they take down a specific fic about them, AO3 should delete it. But they didn’t, and they don’t. So I don’t use AO3.
“Problematic content” should be criticized when it is handled in offensive ways.
There are ways to handle topics such as child abuse, sexual exploitation, etc. tastefully and respectfully to victims, but when creators fail to do this, they deserve to have their treatment of the subject pointed out.
SEE MY ABOVE POINT ABOUT CREATORS WHO ARE SUFFERING, vent art does not fucking count and pointing out the way someone handles their own real experiences in their vent art makes you an asshole.
Proshipping as I’ve seen it looks like such an unhealthy coping mechanism.
To my knowledge, “shipping” means that you enjoy the dynamic between two (or more) characters, typically in a romantic or sexual way. Enjoying the romantic or sexual dynamic between a minor and an adult you headcanon to be grooming them is… So beyond fucked.
This is 100% not my business and I’m never gonna tell someone this, but it’s an opinion I personally hold that I’ve seen attached to antis before.
