trying to get through don't fear the reaper & like. ugh. it has so many good moments but the rest is such a drag to get through like. what worked with the first book (which was. hm. good but also kind of difficult to get through) was primarily jade's narration. & i get the sense that this one has so many shifting perspectives in order to replicate movie scenes, but it's not like. fun to read. like it's annoying to have to shift perspectives every single PARAGRAPH & especially when you're expected to remember every single vaguely mentioned minor character in order to keep up (like. didn't remember the history teacher's name & spent his entire section confused until he introduced himself to jade).

a lot of perspectives also seem like. irrelevant. like i don't care abt the high schoolers!! the entire section where they're explaining the senior project + shoveling the town + giggling about crushes is just like. what does this have to do with the story. same with kimmy or lonnie or rexall. their perspectives were interesting, sure! but they have nothing to do with the actual plot... like it's just character background & worldbuilding. & it ruins the tension when you already know lonnie's dead, versus learning he is just from finding his body.

another thing is that is seems to be spelling everything out way more explicitly than in the first book. like jade saying out loud that holmes was like a father to her, or kimmy's whole description of motherhood. we know this stuff! we can get all of that information from just reading the book & it makes me feel kind of like. talked down to to have it written so plainly. like all that versus the ending scene of the first book where jade waits for the bears to kill each other & it's never stated but so clearly meant to represent jade & tab.

ALSO. i really don't get dark mill south as a character. like. i have kinda complicated thoughts on stacy as a character but at least she was very clearly meant to parallel jade, & she existed as a supernatural entity would. DMS is meant to be the hulking semi unkillable slasher trope via michael myers or jason, but also he's like. like okay. the book introduces him as having a clear path & motive (the hangings) which leads to his indiscriminate killings. but the book then transitions into him just killing everyone in sight like its a sequel even though it's the same spree. & THEN it steamrolls the whole grounded motive thing with his perspective scene, where he's getting horny. like shifting the motives from being something that COULD be examined to just "well he's fucked in the head."

like. that's the thing. is that it's not that i don't GET him, but more that he's written as such an 80s stock character that he' seems so 's completely out of place in the rest of the narrative. like, you're doing all these perspectives to flesh out everyone's motivations & mannerisms, but not him? the one with a genuinely interesting motive? your literal antagonist? (or like. secondary? i'm not done with the book yet so i'm not clear what the deal is with ginger/cinn) it just feels very... phoned in i guess? & i'm also not a fan of having his perspective in the book at all... just felt like it cheapened the scary parts of it

(that being said. ughhhhh his description of the deer & letha made me feel sick. good writing!)

also. ugh. not that i think it's a bad thing to write about especially in YA or horror, but the sexual abuse in this one just seems kind of gratuitous? like, book one, it's a significant part of jade's story & HER core motivation (& makes it all the more fun when she & letha confront tab). but this book it's not even about jade or how these things have affected jade, it's just like. sprinkled in. like with rexall--we KNOW he's a creep, but in this one everyone else just seems grossed out but okay with it. like, you're the (sort of) deputy, & you don't give a shit that he's recording high schoolers? or with the doctor & the constant mention of him groping teens, or with the history teacher (who is ALSO such a boring stock character) & cinn. like these moments which arent examined or addressed but just feel like a way to provide conflict, when it's like. dude. this book is already a million pages long, you can't throw in a sentence or two talking about the consequences of actions?

basically. i think my issue boils down to the fact that it emulates shitty slashers & doesn't actually adapt them to make them interesting in a modern book format. like, i love slashers! i've seen most of the movies the book references & love them. but some of them are boring & badly written in a way that's charming in visual media & annoying in textual, & there's no like. acknowledgement of that. & what worked in the first one was jade's distinct perspective, bc even though all the references could get annoying, it was also a good gauge for her severe mental health issues (like oh my god. the opening scene where she's telling shooting glasses over the fire about slashers, & then abruptly attempts suicide? favorite scene in both books alongside letha & tab's scene). but i don't care about it when it's random side characters ranting about references!!!! you are not the main character you're some creepy boring teacher i have no sympathy for you!!!!!!

its settings are also MUCH less tangible. in the first one, we have clearly defined places & clearly defined goals each chapter. like the elk cave or tab's house or terra nova. this book attempts to establish the station as a base, but we're never actually there. it's like, okay we're at the dam, okay we're at the house, okay we're at the station, store, school, station, school, lake, terra nova, lake, station, lake, school, etc. there's no breaks, just constant movement which combined with the constant perspective switching is like. oh my god i'm getting motion sickness. just shut up! stay in one place for a single second!!! none of the book feels grounded at all.

anyway. i'm still not done with it but my thoughts on it <3 probably give it a 2.5 bc it does have fun moments! just not enough to carry it. will probably still read the third book though when it comes to my library

im coming into ur inbox to talk abt cranboo tma assignment because hoo boy ive got SO MANY THOUGHTS.

ok so i do have a TMA au and all the characters are based off dsmp obviously

but anyway i digress.

now ranboo is interesting because hes *afraid*. he is full of anxiety over pretty much everything which is what makes it easy for me to see him as at least touched by every entity there is. what jumps out the most for me as the most influential on him is the eye, the spiral, and the web.

with the eye, it's not so much that he fears being watched, although he is terrified of his secrets being known via his do not read journals and uncontrolled enderwalk states. cranboo has the drive to know and learn without really understanding what cost that might bring to himself. finding the portals, both of them, the experiments, the books, the lessons, his silent watching and recording of events that transpired in new lmanburg and the butcher army and in logstedshire and the arctic and the cookie outpost and las nevadas. he is there. he doesnt intervene. he watches, he writes, he records. he stays out of it but he is inextricably weaved into it, yknow? hes terrified of knowing but he digs up his yard anyways to find the disc. he hates dream but still has a nightmare about the prison. he doesnt understand anything about himself and it drives him MAD. he HAS to understand but hes TERRIFIED of what he might find.

this ties into the spiral as well. the prison nightmare, the constant routines, the fractal mining and constantly running around in patterns over and over, the panic room, the journals. its all to keep him grounded but it really only serves as a way to run himself into a rut. he cant tell what is real and what isnt because his routines follow him through everything and his memory keeps failing him and people keep messing with his journals, TRUST NOONE NOT EVEN YOURSELF, hes paranoid and he backs himself into corners but the floor is falling out from underneath him, yknow?

the web is also a prominent influence especially with how much he doubts himself and his first hand account of how dream has manipulated tubbo and tommy and EVERYONE else, with his dreams and the enderwalk and failing memory he doesnt know who to trust and he doesnt know peoples intentions and he doesnt know if his actions are his own because he cant remember.

those i think are the most prominent influences on him but with the other entities there is some sway there as well:

the buried: the panic room, the hidden disc, all his underground tunnels and small tight rooms and squirreling away

the corruption: he is filled with debilitating fear that through his own or someone elses actions he is becoming a bad or evil person

the dark: panic room, made of obsidian.

the end: paranoid totem collection to keep his friends safe

the flesh: ties into his fear of conflict and how that conflict has changed himself and his friends. acidic tear scars.

the hunt: ties into the fear of being watched, hes scared that people will find him and hurt him if his secrets are revealed. definitely exacerbated after the butcher army and doomsday.

the lonely: he spends hours by himself. terrified of taking sides so his indecision severs any ties he has

the slaughter: conflict avoidant tendancies springing from a fear of war and divisions and what those kinds of things can bring

the stranger: see the prison nightmare again. uncanny valley off the charts. he doesnt know dream but dream knows him there is Something Not Right

the vast: ties into the spiral, infinite and unending tunnels and rooms and hallways, cranboos limbo is water as far as the eye can see

the extinction: paranoia over the nukes store in snowchester. his panic over impending doomsday. the helplessness to stop or slow any of it.

cranboo fascinates me to no end. i personally think that he could be The Archivist if he tried hard enough

it's a horror anthology podcast abt a guy named jon sims who is working his way thru digitalizing 200 year's worth of statements that are archived at the magnus institute, an organization that researches and documents paranormal/esoteric/weird happenings, after he was chosen to be the new head archivist after the last one.. went missing. he reads statements on his little tape recorder and follows them up with whatever info he and his team can find, gives little thoughts on them, etc, unprofessionally talks about his coworkers and his boss, and then things begin to take. an interesting turn. and jon and u, the listener, begin to realize that these spooky happenings are connected. something very big and very evil is lurking below the surface of what we can see. jon realizes he's unwittingly unwillingly uncontrollably playing a part in a much bigger plan, and he can't stop it from happening. the only way out (that doesn't involve dying or permanent mutilation) is through.

it's horror it's tragedy it has a fun and funky cast its an office drama and a romcom and a murder mystery. for a while jon is the only narrator but then other characters start to pop in- his coworkers, his boss, people who want to give statements, his roommate, the entity of delusion and madness and gaslighting that warps the tape as it/he/she speaks and is simultaneously the most and least helpful being jon has ever had the misfortune to interact with. I really really love the distortion. there are eldritch horrors at every turn. there are bad cops who do not become good cops but instead quit the force and try to do better which has... interesting results that I lie awake at night and think about. also there are so many wlws. just like. an army of wlws. and jon is canonically ace!

To Me. amongst the horrortragedy and the futility and absolutely insane themes and characters and choices that I adore. it is all about the line in episode 101 where the distortion says "is a thing evil if it simply obeys its own nature? if it embodies it?". the moral question of is a thing evil if it reacts on instinct. if you can't change what you are, you have to decide what you're going to do with yourself. and decide what it makes you.

Q: Small (maybe) question regarding your stance on bighit? I see people calling them trash and then some praising to the high heavens, while I’m more in the middle, as in “they’re not the worst but they do need to step up in many aspects”, such as they need someone to do actual product double-checking (Taehyung’s name has been left out more than once), cultural learning for both staff and idols (though I’m guessing most companies or all companies don’t have this). Thoughts?

A: my stance is that i don't trust or stan any corporation bc all corporations are bad under capitalism, but i also don't have any reason to think they're particularly awful. what's weird to me abt how stan twt talks abt bighit is like... suddenly everyone's an expert on the inner workings of record labels and artist management and shit? i DO think that really dedicated fans frequently learn a LOT about the business side of artist management and stuff, and that shouldn't be discounted, but that's gonna be a minority of the fandom, and meanwhile everyone's out here making these like sweeping statements on bighit when like... I'M definitely not an expert and i have no knowledge of law or entertainment or really ANYTHING that's relevant to evaluating how ethically or effectively bighit operates, so i sort of restrain judgment to the kinds of things i feel i *can* comment on, which is mostly how they present themselves as a public-facing entity.

in general, i really like bang pd, just like, as a person; i always enjoy reading interviews with him or watching him speak bc he seems v intelligent and i like the ways he talks about wanting to give artists and trainees some amount of freedom while also ultimately coming across as a businessman who wants to make money. i also like that when he talks about bts's rise to fame he acknowledges how much of that was luck and doesn't try to use it to make himself or the company seem like some kind of prescient geniuses. bts also seem pretty comfortable with joking around abt him and i don't get the same discomfort vibes from them i get from some other idols when they talk abt/to their company heads (*cough*jyp*cough*), so that also makes me inclined to think he's prob not a bad boss, all things considered.

there are things that i'm pleased with bighit for and other things that i'm not so pleased with, and like, at the end of the day the company doesn't care about the fans, or even abt bts as people, bc it's a company and it cares about taking our money, as all companies do. its representatives talk pretty frankly at their community briefings (which is another thing i enjoy, even if they do make me fear for the future sometimes lol) about how they can increase the number of transactions we perform for bts to take even MORE of our money. all i can do is hope that bts have good heads on their shoulders and have good counsel and make good choices in advocating for themselves with their company in an industry that's very exploitative (in both the west and in korea), and as a fan i can ask for things from bighit that affect me directly, and judge them on those, and mostly i'm reasonably pleased with how they deliver on that stuff.
