I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS (Also free reminder that you’re wonderfully amazing and I truly cherish you so much. You are one of my closest friends and are so very loved💖💖💖)
1. Are there any holidays coming up you look forward to?
2. What are your next project plans for your OCs?
3. Infodump a cool fun fact about the F/O currently on your mind
Awww, and I also cherished you too as well and never forget that we are here for you. You are also a great friend that I met here and you are also loved as well 💖💖💖💖
Anyways, let me answer each question
1. Actually no, all I'm expecting is school and a bunch of workloads to face with a lot of expectations and questions awaiting on my doorstep of what would be my course in college and my strand in senior. Although Christmas is around 5 months away and I know I never really celebrate Halloween that much but I'mma support you once you're gonna start off Halloween in a very early way possible.
2. I might be very tired and lazy, sometimes busy with enrollment, irl stuff, and grinding the whole season of Golden Kamuy but I may still continue on working with their reference sheets and information. For any future plans, maybe I would finally just went to do some work on my BOCW ocs and MW oc due to the fact that I am working on my Golden Kamuy Oc in which you will know her soon after once I get to finish coloring her ref sheet. I may also work on my self insert since I sometimes draw them once in a blue moon and would work on redesigning them. I wanna do Len and Art (Agarthan Arthur?) screentime since I have so many plans for these two. I would also try and make some oc x canon content even if it means crying over how hard Primis Nikolai's outfit can be :'>. I may also start posting more GK oc content with her being shipped with Tsurumi (cause why not?) and trying to practice how to draw each GK characters just in case if the time comes. I might also start making my Vinland Saga oc, but gotta need to work on my Viking history since I known only a little bit.
3. That one fun fact that would always be part of my heart is Tsurumi tends to play with his porcelain enamel plate while taking a bath. There is a small comic on the wiki page where he just lets the plate float on the water like a paper boat. Gotta love this unhinged yet handsome man 💖

Tell me if I'm being crazy here but I was just wondering if you feel like the Ogata in the anime is an inaccurate representation of the Ogata we get in the manga? And if you feel the same as me why may that be? I really can't nail it but it's bothering me watching him in it. Like they missed the point of his character.
Well...
...in itself all the characters are inaccurately represented in the anime.
There are some problems that come with the anime adaptation:
- the first is not really a fault of who creates the anime, merely a consequence of the anime being a different medium. As a result some things can’t be delivered in the same way as the manga.
For example this is one of the spread pages in which Noda plays with the contrast between what happens in one half and what happens in the other half.
Tumblr media
On one side we’ve Sugimoto and Asirpa eating warm food together, safe and happy, on the other we’ve Ogata being shown alone (although we know there’s people around him) about to freeze to death and in a poor shape.
You can’t just get the same effect on the anime.
We see a similar trick also used in a scene that seems to foreshadow the ‘cat alliance’. In this three panel we see Edogai’s cat and then, below his panel, two panel showing Wildcat Ogata and Tiget Kiroranke exchanging a nod as they turn at the same time.
Tumblr media
You just can’t get the same effect in the anime but the anime didn’t even made an effort as it didn’t show the cat falling on the ground (or better, it’ll show it but later on) but just Ogata first and Kiro after, both clearly looking at Hijikata without turning, Ogata’s expression different from the original (change of expressions is a point in which I’ll dig later).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...and the same goes for other ‘manga only’ ways to show things. For example the manga can use a swirling shade to imply that Ogata is actually in turmoil despite looking calm on the outside.
Tumblr media
The anime wouldn’t be able to do such thing without making the draws looking weird. Of course some anime would find different ways to drive home the same concept (from a certain music to moving the whole swirling to the background or things like that)... but Geno tends to miss those details.
Anyway this might seems minor, many believe they don’t notice this sort of details... but actually most of those details are meant to pass below your conscious radar, and give you a determinate feeling without you quite realizing it. They shape the background of your opinion on the characters or of their relations or of the themes of the story.
- another problem is something for which the adaptation can be partly blamed and it’s the matter of cutting scenes. We should probably split the anime adaptation into the three series because they had different fates.
A premise. Out of late anime series have started being created for being 12 episodes series for commercial reasons. I won’t get into details on the why but this affected GK as all its series are 12 episodes and, to fit all the amount they decided to fit in 12 episodes, cutting scenes was mandatory in many cases. You just wouldn’t manage to put everything in them.
Plus, many anime series aren’t created to cover the whole storyline but just a part of it, using the anime series merely as a way to promote the manga (and likely, originally GK was planned to be a mere 12 episodes series).
Now, in GK case...
The first series adapted most of the story. There were however some relevant cuts that affected the series, the main one being how they completely removed Umeko from the plot something that hugely affected Sugimoto’s characterization but also, will come to bite back in future series with the result it’ll affect Sugimoto and Asirpa. Another notable cut was the Barato arc. They recovered it in the OAD, but if you don’t watch the OAD but just the anime, you’ve a great hole in the plot development. If the series has stopped at 12 episodes and had been merely a promotional mean for the story it wouldn’t have been a big deal but we know ultimately it continued. I would also say in some points it felt a bit rushed... but again, it could have worked for a promotional series... while it feels pretty bad for an ongoing one.
The second series was... a mess. It cuts left and right without really paying care to connect well the various parts of the story. Parts of the cuts had a reason to be, as some scenes seemed hard to transpose in an anime (think Anehata), others though were just cut so that they would fit in the 12 episodes quota all the plot that was missing to cover the story up till Abashiri, when the series would have benefitted greatly if they had stopped sooner instead than making a mad rush for Abashiri that translated in a cutting fest. They then recovered the Shiraishi arc, the giant snake arc, the boss Wakayama arc, the Anehata arc in 3 OAD (but we still miss the Lighting bandit arc and the fake Ainu arc), but it’s worth to mention some of whose OAD clearly weren’t planned, as they can’t connect anymore with the series which cut them in such a way they can’t be reinserted anymore.
The third series tried again adapting everything except the Sekiya arc and the Koito past arc. Overall though, despite those two cuts, they tried to adapt the most they could and at a decent pace, which allows the third series to come out as the best of the 3.
Result of this all?
The characterization of most of the characters, especially if you watch only the anime series without the OAD (or with the OAD but not placed in the order in which the manga storyline would have placed them), suffers of a lot of cuts that are instead important for their development.
Ogata is, of course, among the ones affected.
Some cuts are small, for example here we see him explaining that he’s not just randomly escaping, but that he has assested the situation and a retreat was the smartest thing he could do.
Tumblr media
The same goes here, with Ogata again analyzing the situation and planning countermeasures as well as taking care of their weaknesses (warning Nikaidou to hide his binoculars).
Tumblr media
And the same goes here
Tumblr media
Ogata is even capable to point out that Hijikata’s plan might suceed at first but not in the long run, which shows a capacity of analysis of the big picture.
Tumblr media
Plot wise this kind of cuts are meaningless, they don’t change the story but, character wise, they rob Ogata of one of his main characteristics, observing a situation, analyzing it and being fast to come up with a valid course of action.
You’ll find many cuts through the anime series and they touch various aspects of each character.
Sometimes those cuts affected lines exchanged between characters so that the relationships felt different because some things were just left unsaid.
Other cuts affected the boxes explaining things, for example in the anime we aren’t told why Ogata eats snow but we’re supposed to figure out on our own, or how the bear could sneak up without Ogata and Nikaidou noticing or how Ogata learnt during the war that he had to avoid hitting vital parts to slow his pursuers down and so on.
Then there are the HUGE cuts, the one I mentioned before, that involved plot threads (Umeko) or entire arcs, or had arcs placed in OAD that not everyone saw or that don’t well connect with the anime.
The Barato Arc and the Anehata arc both involved Ogata significantly, so not seeing the OAD affects the understanding of the character.
The fake Ainu arc being cut stripped Ogata of a lot of scenes, among which Sugimoto’s stubborn refusal of Ogata’s logical theory (those Ainu are fake) as well as didn’t show how Ogata saved Sugimoto’s life by shooting to a fake Ainu who was about to kill Sugimoto, returning Sugimoto’s favour (Sugimoto saved him while they were in Edogai’s house).
The Lighting bandit arc in the manga worked well to tie with the fact Ogata was a child born from parents who didn’t love each other. The anime kept Ogata’s backstory (and animated it mostly rather well) but it felt less strong since it lacked the frame of the Lighting bandit arc... and the worst part is we lost this bit.
Tumblr media
The constant cutting of Umeko from the plot ended up causing the scene in which Sugimoto replied to Asirpa he was searching the gold to take care of a friend’s widow and Ogata pointed out how that widow was the woman Sugimoto loved and also realized how Asirpa was crushing for Sugimoto. The lack of this bit affects how we read the whole scene on the ice in Karafuto.
The fact the anime decided to skip the Anehata arc, changed the reunion between Ogata and Tanigaki making Ogata’s reaction to the death of Tamai and Co and to the discovery of how they actually died weaker and even deprived us of Sugimoto’s recurring ‘don’t trust Ogata’ to Asirpa who instead trust him, affecting how the relations were presented. This cause the relationship between Sugimoto and Ogata to look much better than it was.
Also, they removed Ogata’s presence once they were in the blind bandits house. He entered in it with Sugimoto but then the anime decided to have him disappear and left Sugi to handle it all when in the manga Ogata was there to help.
- another HUGE problem are the transposition choices. The biggest fault of the first series is to tend to present the character from a distance or from behind, hardly showing us their expressions. The Japanese voice actors (sorry I hadn’t tried out the dubs), expecially Tsuda Kenjiro, Ogata’s voice actor, do try their best but sometimes you just need to see the faces to get a feeling of what they’re feelings.
Look at this manga scene in which we see Ogata’s expression trice.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Do you know what they showed us in the anime? This.
Tumblr media
Basically the anime put entirely on Tsuda Kenjiro the burden of delivering to the viewers Ogata’s displeased and suspicious feelings. Only Tsuda Kenjiro was instructed on keeping Ogata mostly toneless so, while he’s still an awesome actor and there are differences in his performance that give out what Ogata is feeling, they don’t come out as obvious as the visual of the manga, especially to a not Japanese viewer. It’s not a choice to keep Ogata mysterious, it’s a specific problem of the 1st anime series which does it with many, many characters, Sugimoto and Asirpa included because drawing and recycling such a scene takes less effort than animating all the panels that were in the manga.
It’s a problem mostly of the first series though, as the two following series were more expression friendly but... but the expressions they showed in all three series were often different from the ones used in the manga. Look at how in this scene Ogata is serious, I’ll say worried in the manga since his face is shadowed and as he understands something might be up but he has no idea what he is, but he clearly doesn’t like this development...
Tumblr media
...while he grins in the anime, his face well light as if he’s having the best day of his life.
Tumblr media
Then when he’s proudly showing off what he knows in the manga he smiles...
Tumblr media
while in the anime he feels down.
Tumblr media
Smiling with his eyes raised...
Tumblr media
...versus not smiling with his eyes lowered.
Tumblr media
...and so on and I don’t even know why they felt the need to change the various characters’ expressions (yeah, it’s not just an Ogata’s problem) as there’s simply no reason to do it.
On an interesting  note the anime chose to expand some fighting scenes. Ogata’s first fight with Sugimoto is longer, as Ogata manages to swing his bayonet a little before ending up on the ground (which is detrimental of Sugimoto who’s WAY more amazing of a fighter than him as Sugimoto can fight on par with Gansoku and Ushiyama) and felt the need to stretch the confrontation with Tsukishima too.
In the manga Tsukishima just kicks Ogata, Ogata notices Tsukishima is taking then gun and then tosses himself behind the stuffed people as he was still in that room. In the anime Ogata is in the room with the stuffed bear instead. Tsukishima kicks him behind it but then Ogata manages to spring out the room and go hid behind the stuffed people in the other room.
On another note, when in Edogai’s house Ogata is being beaten up by a soldier in the manga it’s shown he’s trying to protect himself with his arms while in the anime he seems to remain there completely still... and the anime put a sudden focus on Ogata’s eyes to switch at Sugimoto attacking the soldier and, at the same time pushing him away from Ogata, as if Ogata knew that he wouldn’t die there because Sugimoto was there to cover up for him, where in the manga there’s no emphasis on Ogata’s eyes and the two scenes are cut by how one has to turn page... plus Sugimoto hit the soldier so that he fell above Ogata so it’s clear Ogata wouldn’t have managed to glimpse Sugimoto.
 - Lastly yes, they missed the point of many of his interactions. For example the anime makers said they believed since Ogata’s mom kept on making the anglerfish nabe, it was because Ogata liked it, a sign she liked her son... when, according to the story, she kept on making it because it was his father’s favourite dish and she had gotten mad. In Karafuto they downplayed Asirpa’s efforts to have Ogata say citatap and hinna and completely missed how Ogata was allucinating her as Yuusaku...
(I mean in this scene is pretty obvious there’s a parallel between the two so I’m not sure how the anime missed it)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...and the anime seems to put more focus on how the lynx and Ogata’s tracks superimposed than on how Ogata is now walking on a different path from the lynx... just to list some of the things that came to my mind.
For more I’ve a couple of tags in which I compared the episode transposition and the manga one in details or a little more vaguely.
So, long story short, anime Ogata can’t help but give a different impression compared to manga Ogata.
He misses part of his story, his interactions are different, his expressions are changed, scenes that were meant to deliver certain things aren’t there so of course he seems another person.
It’s not done specifically to him though, as everyone suffered about this.
The anime, in his attempt to make the story simple and more... ‘shonen’ friendly has taken away much of the grey concepts for a more black and white picture which influenced also how situations were presented.
But well, while I’m not satisfied, part of this is done to market the show to a wider audience so it’s kind of a forced choice.
(On a sidenote it’s worth to remember that the anime adapt the volume version of the story which differs from the mangazine version in some relevant points. So not all the changes are completely made up by the anime.)
I hope it helps. Thank you for your ask!

The Miys, Ch. 124
Second half of the exhibition!  Mac’s performance here is based on an actual incident that occurred with one of the many actual cats that Mac is based on.
Trigger warnings for blood here.
Thanks go to @baelpenrose for his beta-reading and Arthur, @zommbiebro for Jokul, @books-and-cartoons for GK, @werewolf2578 for Michael and all the other characters you have added to this story, and @charlylimph-blog for her characters. <3 you both!
“Who is competing in the canine rounds?” Coffey asked, steering the topic smoothly.
“Myself,” Grandma Kim gestured. “Michael and Sparkles, Derek and Machiavelli, for the service round. I believe there are a few more for the security round, but I don’t recall whom.”  From GK, that was basically saying they were so far beneath her notice that she refused to learn their names.
A chime sounded, indicating that the intermission had ended. Arthur, Coffey, and I made our way back into the stands, waving to Simon as he worked his way onto the sidelines. Ivan had initially come down ahead of me and Maverick, but was also packing the floor with the competitors for the upcoming events. As soon as we took our seats, Evania announced the next event - sure enough, it was the service and security animal exhibitions.
Rather than the participants stepping forward, Antoine took the floor after Evan. “Previously, these events were separated and considered the ‘canine’ events.  However, it has been brought to my attention, most ardently, that service and security animals are not limited to canines, even with the limited amount of animals we currently have on the Ark. As such, we are combining the service and security events, and this year there is a non-canine participant.  Due to the nature of the exhibition, I will be personally monitoring from the sidelines in case there is any need for interventions.  Also, as with in the past, please be assured that all participants in these events are volunteers and a med bay is on standby.”
Medbay is on standby? I wondered. I didn’t recall that before, but I also hadn’t paid more attention than was necessary to know how many jerky treats to give Lyric and Sparkles.
First up was our veteran, Lyric the First. The elder stateswoman of Ark companions may have hobbled onto the field, but she went through her paces as a service animal with tidy precision. On top of that, the second the ‘security’ portion started and someone brandished a weapon at GK, all concept of ‘elder’ went out the window and Lyric became 120lbs of teeth and fury, daring the faux-attacker to come within six feet of her charge.
I could feel Coffey shudder beside me, at the same time that I could see Arthur nod with approval.  I couldn’t lie - there was a part of me that remembered this same dog standing over me when Maverick first dropped by unexpectedly, and I was warmed to know that I had been so safe in that moment.
After the applause due such a respected member of the community, Lyric the First was taken off the field, and it was Lyric II’s turn to show how she lived up to the name.  Sure enough, she displayed the same precision in the service animal rounds, but it was clear that she knew this was for show in the security segment.  Rather than the degree of savagery her mother had shown, Lyric II was clearly a little confused by the fake-attack.  She still received her applause and treats, however, while GK was obviously considering how much more training was needed.
Michael and Sparkle were next, and their performance was on-par with Lyric the First. Rather than having Sparkle function as a service animal for Michael, Sam had volunteered. The moment loud noises started to upset Sam, Sparkle nudged him into a prone position and brought his ribbon over.  If someone tried to step to close, she calmly pushed them back. Due to her youth, Michael did step in for the security portion - Sparkle wasn’t trained to decide between security and support yet - and that was where she shined.  Without hesitation, she took a defensive stance at any aggression toward Michael, and really did Lyric the First proud.
And then, the fourth round happened. That was what set the crowd’s eyebrows on end, the round with non-stop chatter throughout.
On the contrary to the rounds with both Lyrics and Sparkle, there was no leash, there were no steps to walk through. Instead, the crowd saw Derek Okafor walk out, carrying a lavender blanket and pillow, with a solid mass of feline ink trailing behind him.  Rather than lead Mac through any actions, Derek set the pillow down, curled up on the floor, and covered himself with the blanket.  In an action I had witnessed on more occasions than I could count, Mac curled his impressive mass on the blanket, just outside of Derek’s elbow.  Directed audio amplified Mac’s purring so everyone could hear it, even in the furthest seats.
Suddenly, the audio in the gym played discordant noises.  Not even waiting for Derek to flinch, Mac darted under the blanket and a lump erupted where Derek’s ear had been.  After a moment, the sound cut off, and instead a bowl of food - one so strong-smelling that I could catch it from my seat - was brought out. Mac poked his nose out and started sneezing convulsively, hissing at the bowl as he moved towards it.
The coup de grace was what came next. Without warning, as soon as the bowl was taken away, someone darted towards Derek from the other side. I could actually feel my soul chuckle for this poor slob as I anticipated what would happen.
Sure enough, Mac became a blur of void and vaulted over Derek, clawing the interloper from elbow to wrist, then from thigh to knee. He hissed and spat, clawing at anything and anyone that came within reach.  Nothing could stop the ball of feline fury until Derek darted out an arm to scoop Mac back under the blanket while the poor volunteer - who looked like they had a bad date with a Cuisinart - was led to the aforementioned med bay.
“I’m not sure they knew they were signing up for this,” I murmured to Maverick and Coffey.
Coffey made a firmly negative gesture. “I assure you that they were aware. That particular volunteer? She has been Machiavelli’s training target for three months now.”
“Why?” I sputtered.
“Some people are afraid of dogs,” Coffey shrugged. Given his clear discomfort watching both Lyrics perform, it made more sense suddenly.  I knew he wasn’t afraid of dogs - he kept treats in his pocket for Lyric and Lyric II, at all times - but we weren’t far enough removed from Earth to make everyone comfortable with the kinds of dogs that worked best as service animals.
A cat, though? I knew from a lifetime of experience that nothing was as persistent or vicious as a cat, when properly motivated.
The audience was respectfully silent until Mac and Derek left the gym, before cheering wildly.  Even from where I was sitting, I could hear people talking about the potential of having a cat once the colony was established.  As a firmly devoted cat owner, I couldn’t even make up an excuse to argue.
Arthur leaned over so I could hear him clearly. “You never told me you have an attack cat.”
“I’ve always had them,” I admitted. “I just didn’t know it wasn’t a normal thing.”
“Mac is a good kitty.”
“The best kitty,” Coffey corrected with a grin. At some point, he had adopted Derek as a younger brother/nephew figure, and by extension doted on Mac to the point of chemical warfare.
“The only kitty,” I pointed out. I would have loved for the Ark to have ship cats, but we had learned - the hard way - that genetic enhancements were necessary for them to thrive in the gravity we were operating under.  It was part of the reason Mac was so large - four years ago, he had actually undergone a heart transplant so his vasculatory system would function in the increased gravity. Where Lyric II and Sparkles had benefited from what Miys learned from the original Lyric, Mac was the original.
The next event was thrown projectiles, so I took the opportunity to go grab some popcorn and sausage-rolls for the last two events. No one in my family was participating in the javelin/spear exhibition, but I knew that Xiomara and Evan would be eyeing these candidates closely for colonial security, so I made a point to pay attention. However, despite my original reason for keeping an eye on the event, I found myself fascinated. Each spear had a different range for accuracy, a different technique for throwing… I found myself filing the information away for later, anticipating a very rousing conversation with our Councillor of Security and her protege. Ivan Thorsson, to nobody’s surprise, excelled.
However, the last event of the exhibition was finally at hand - archery.  Charly had made several attempts to have this event be its own exhibition - the projectiles were not thrown, nor were they combustion - but a sheer lack of participants inevitably led to the sport being included with the ‘non combustion’ weapons exhibition, in the same way the animal companion events were.  On the plus side, participation this Von-year made a strong case for archery being its own event.
Participants were allowed ten arrows, ten targets, and fifteen minutes to fire all arrows. Bows could be any size, but had to be pulled by hand - no crossbows, no hooks to draw. Targets were only 25cm in diameter, and any shots that missed the desired target were counted off, with a double ‘friendly fire’ deduction if the arrow hit an entirely different target.
Even with all the restrictions, there were no less than twelve participants in this event, more than any other.
Maverick was first. While he was exceptionally precise, his Shinto-style did not lend itself well to speed. Next came Tyche, who landed killing hits on every shot, though with far less aplomb than her knife-throwing had shown. Arthur had a similar result - fast and deadly, but less accurate than Maverick - before MIchael Smith took the stage again, to my surprise.
My jaw hit the floor as he pulled just as fast as Tyche and Arthur, with the same accuracy of Maverick. Very few people took part in multiple exhibitions, and to see him do so well in three was a shock.  Nonetheless, he swapped out with the next participant with zero acknowledgement of his performance.
After that, the event continued: several people I did not recognize, before all that was left were Conor and Charly.  Similar to his style of throwing knives, Conor drew ambidextrously and over the shoulder. The connection was crystal clear as you watched his motion - a smooth draw, looped into a pull and release.  The only difference was that, where he would throw a knife, he would draw the arrow.
Next, I expected Charly, but what I saw made my head spin: Simon Rodriguez stepped out of a back room, with a longbow and a quiver full of arrows.  Even more incredibly, he did not stand in front of any specific target, but stood in the center of all ten.  With one deep breath, he started drawing from his waist, firing and drawing, arrow after arrow, in a smooth, mechanical motion.
Every arrow struck the center of the target.
The blood drained from my face as I realised why Tyche had threatened Conor with allowing Simon to use him for target practice…. I had no idea, at the time, that Simon was such an incredible shot. Immediately, I felt guilty.
Before I could apologize to him, Charly and her bow walked out. Speaking now felt like an obscenity, since this was the reason so many people were still here. Sure enough, as soon as the targets were replaced, she displayed a foreign calm as she fired shot after shot.
Ten shots. Ten exact centers. Ten arrowheads protruding from the back of targets by a minimum of two inches.
Twelve seconds total.
The transition between Simon and Charly took place so quickly that I had no idea who the applause was for - the Twelve Second Sorceress, or her clear protege. Either way, the end of the exhibition was explosive, to say the least.
I turned to Conor, ready to apologise for not taking the previous threat as serious at it was, when he said something that made me slap my face and groan.
“Bless it, do you think Simon will show me how to do that?”

Shu Takumi interview
Several years ago, Official Nintendo Magazine UK (now no longer existent) had an interview with Shu Takumi and it was even on their website. Now their website is no longer around, but I did manage to find the interview on the Wayback Machine and I figured I’d repost it to make it easier to find, as well as give people who haven’t seen it yet the opportunity to do so.
On the day that Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies is released, Takumi talks to us about his best-loved series
Shu Takumi's most famous creation, Phoenix Wright, is famed for his 'turnabouts'. These whiplash-inducing twists of logic see him step into the unknown in order to seek his client's innocence; he's essentially a chancer, blagging his way to victory. Talk to Takumi, however, and you sense that he leaves nothing to fate. His stories are intricately plotted, his jokes laser-targeted and his heroes full-bodied personalities.
In a medium in which storytelling starts and ends with 'man hates thing, man shoots thing', Takumi is a rare exception to the rule. With his latest yarn, Professor Layton Vs. Ace Attorney, on the horizon, Associate Editor Matthew Castle was lucky enough to cross-examine one of gaming's definitive voices.
Matthew Castle: Before we start, just for any readers who might not know who you are, could you tell us about your role at Capcom?
Shu Takumi: I'm a director, which means that I propose ideas for new titles, design the games, write the scenarios and direct the projects. In addition, I mutter complaints and, when the intense pressure of an impossible schedule finally gets to me, escape into a fantasy world of my own creation [laughs].
MC: Before developing Ace Attorney you worked on Dino Crisis. How does one go from dinosaur survival horror to virtual courtrooms?
ST: Dino Crisis was the brainchild of my then boss, Resident Evil creator, Shinji Mikami. Working on his projects taught me not only how to make games, but also how to think about them. After Dino Crisis 2 wrapped, Mr Mikami gave me six months in which to create any kind of game I wanted.
I was still pretty wet behind the ears, but as I'd originally joined Capcom with a desire to create mystery and adventure games, this was a huge chance for me to make my mark as a creator. In the end it took a team of seven 10 months to produce the first GBA Ace Attorney title. Having the freedom to create exactly the kind of game I wanted was amazing and it was a real pleasure to work on that project.
MC: Can you remember when the idea of Ace Attorney first came to you? How did your bosses respond to the idea of a lawyer-based adventure game when you first described it to them?
ST: It was in 2000 when Mr Mikami said I could make my own game and my original idea was a fairly typical adventure with a detective as the main character. Most mystery adventures have the player choose from a number of different dialogue options for their character in order to progress the story, but I wanted a new gameplay style that enabled players to deduce for themselves what was happening, rather than just selecting canned responses. I developed this into the concept of facing off against the suspect in a crime and exposing the contradictions in their statements.
I was sure my new idea would be a fun and original take on the genre, so I started to revise the main character, since a detective would be too traditional for such an original concept. I asked myself, "What kind of professional would face off against a suspect and expose their contradictory statements?" The answer, of course, was a lawyer and so the Ace Attorney concept was born.
Incidentally, I wrote the game design document at home during my summer holiday straight after Dino Crisis 2 finished. One day, I got a call from Mr Mikami. Despite having supposedly given me free rein to design whatever I wanted, he warned me off doing a game about courtroom trials!
MC: Ace Attorney paints the police and legal profession in a silly light. Have you ever had feedback from lawyers or policemen about your portrayal of them?
ST: A few years ago I had the opportunity to speak with some police detectives and they told me that their real-life investigations are nowhere near as absurd as those that were depicted in Ace Attorney. I thought to myself, "Well, I had sort-of guessed that already..."
I've never had feedback from any lawyers, but I imagine it would be the same. They'd tell me they don't scream out "Objection!" as vigorously as our characters and I'd think to myself, "Well, I had sort-of guessed that already..."
MC: Every Ace Attorney game is full of great characters, so when you wrote each sequel how did you decide which people to bring back?
ST: The first time a previously featured character returned in a later case was Larry Butz. Phoenix defended him on a murder charge in the very first case of the first game and he showed up later in the same game as a supporting character in the fourth case.
He wasn't originally planned to be a recurring character, however. The schedule for designing and drawing a new character for that case was so tight that there was a serious risk we wouldn't make it in time, so we decided to reuse an existing character simply to save time on asset creation. Thus, Larry made his encore appearance, which ended up being a well-received element of the first game's storyline, so from the second game onwards, we started bringing old characters back intentionally.
How we choose who to bring back is simple: it's usually either characters who are popular with fans, or those I am fond of [laughs].
MC: For all the madness, there's something traditional about the mysteries at the heart of Ace Attorney. Did you draw on any classic crime writers for inspiration?
ST: You could say that there is a mixture of the spilled blood of victims, the guilty tears of killers and the sweat of hard-working detectives flowing through my veins... To put it less graphically, from the time I came across the Sherlock Holmes series as a child, all the way through to my university days, I've been obsessed with reading classic murder mysteries. It's safe to say that Ace Attorney would not exist were it not for Perry Mason.
When writing the cases for the games I've found inspiration in the works of GK Chesterton, Ellery Queen and Anthony Berkeley, to name but a few. And I can't leave out that modern classic of the genre, Columbo.
MC: How hard is it to devise a juicy twist and to hide it from view? In storytelling you often want to obscure the details, but videogame design often requires clarity. Did you find it hard to rectify those two things?
ST: They say that it's harder to create a puzzle than to solve one and that's certainly proved to be the case in my experience. For the first game, with my lack of experience I found it less like a challenging task than a hobby with which I became obsessed.
You need to control the information presented in the game so that there is a single right answer for the player to deduce, but also weave in plenty of initial inconsistencies for them to uncover and our trademark 'turnabout' twists to confound their expectations. This is where reading all those mystery novels in my youth has really paid off.
MC: Having worked on four Ace Attorney games, how did it feel to step away and work on Ghost Trick? Were you nervous to leave that safety bubble?
ST: I first started working on the Ghost Trick concept in 2004, after the completion of the original GBA version of Ace Attorney 3. The third game was supposed to be the last one, but plans changed and I ended up working on the first DS Ace Attorney, which, as you know, was the first Ace Attorney title to be localised and released in the west. My next project after that was Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, so by the time I got around to finishing Ghost Trick it was 2010, six years after I first thought up the concept.
I certainly felt a lot of pressure when making Ghost Trick, as it was a brand new IP and I had just left the Ace Attorney series, but I was grateful for the chance to take on a new challenge.
MC: Ghost Trick featured some incredibly gruesome murder concepts - death by giant roast chicken is my favourite. From where did you draw inspiration for such a huge variety of deaths? Did any not make the cut?
ST: I feel that the most violent way of murdering someone is by directly shooting, stabbing or strangling them, so for Ghost Trick I wanted to have more indirect ways of killing someone, with a darkly comical, more symbolic feeling to them.
Combining this approach with the fact that the Nintendo DS screens are not the largest, or most high-resolution displays out there, it became important to make sure that whatever death we were presenting to the player was visually easy to comprehend. So being crushed to death by some giant object was a perfect fit for our requirements, whether it was under a big rock or a huge roast chicken.
As far as cut ideas, there was going to be a stage where the victim had been crushed by a huge safe that fell from the ceiling, but time restrictions meant the whole stage was cut. I do love having giant objects fall on people, don't I? That's probably the influence of Tom and Jerry on the young Shu Takumi showing through.
MC: More importantly, how did your team react as you presented these death ideas to them. Was anyone worried for your sanity?
ST: Yes, and not only that, but I also made it my goal to cause the team to worry for my sanity whenever I presented an idea, because if they were, it meant it was a good one. I would hear a little voice in my head saying, "You win!" at times like that. The more "You win!" moments one can have in life, the better.
MC: There were nods in Ghost Trick to Ace Attorney - Missile the dog, for example; a character who looked like Wright - do you see the two games as existing in the same universe?
ST: Those are really just coincidences: the guy who looks like Phoenix actually only has the same colour suit on and the dog is not the same breed as Missile, which, coincidentally, is the name of my pet Pomeranian.
Ghost Trick takes place in what is obviously a much more fantastical world than Ace Attorney. You may have noticed that the level backgrounds in Ghost Trick never have any kind of writing in them. This was an intentional design choice to prevent the game's setting from being identifiable as taking place in any particular country or era from the real world.
MC: Could you imagine an Ace Attorney/Ghost Trick crossover? Any deaths that we couldn't prevent by way of possession could then go to trial in a courtroom...
ST: ...or Phoenix Wright could be killed and Sissel could prosecute his killer in court! Whatever form it might take, a crossover between these games is something I would love to see happen.
MC: When you return to Ace Attorney after a period of absence - whether it was to write Apollo Justice or Professor Layton Vs. Ace Attorney - how easy do you find it to slip back into that world and that writing voice?
ST: Writing for Professor Layton Vs. Ace Attorney was the first time in several years that I wrote in the voice of Phoenix and Maya, but those characters are so dear to me that I carry them around everywhere in my heart, so it was very easy to pick it up again. It was like a reunion with old friends and was a very pleasurable and nostalgic experience for me.
MC: When you came to write the scenario for Professor Layton Vs. Ace Attorney, how hard was it to make those two universes gel? Layton's world traditionally dispels the paranormal, while Wright tends to embrace it.
ST: I worked together with Level 5 to develop the world in which the crossover takes place. It took quite a lot of time for both sides to find a setting into which we were happy to place our biggest characters. The starting point for me was when I wondered to myself if one could still use logic to solve a case in a world in which crimes could be committed using magic. I really liked this idea, so it was hard, but fun, work to design the court sections of the game around it.
MC: Putting all diplomacy aside, who would win in a battle of the wits between Professor Layton and Phoenix Wright?
ST: If you ask me, I don't think Phoenix would be able to hold a candle to Layton in a real battle of wits. However, we all know that the hand of fate somehow always manages to bring a 'turnabout' in Nick's fortunes, no matter how sticky the situation, which means, well, sorry, Professor, but you're out of luck!
MC: With Ace Attorney 5 and Ace Attorney Investigations how does it feel to see your characters in the hands of other Capcom employees? We imagine it must be like a parent sending their child to school for the first day.
ST:
That's an apt comparison. I do have mixed feelings about it sometimes. For instance, I was really surprised to see that after we focused on the new character of Apollo in the fourth game, the Dual Destinies team decided to bring Phoenix back. Ultimately, though, having creators other than myself take the helm of the series is a valid choice, as it brings new directions and new story possibilities.
The team on the new game have looked at what the essence of Ace Attorney is, and as long as they can give the fans another great game to enjoy, I'll be happy. After all, the fact that the series is still going over a decade after I made the first game is something I couldn't possibly have imagined in the first place.
MC: Have you seen the Ace Attorney film? If so, what did you think of it? Was it funny to see characters you sketched out all those years ago in the flesh?
ST: I saw it, and I even got to make a little cameo when the film company invited some Capcom staff to visit the set. You can see me briefly in the spectators' gallery in the final court scene.
It was really something to see the story I wrote for the first game brought to life on the big screen by real-life actors.
And those costumes! They were such perfect recreations. The director, Takashi Miike, is an expert at making existing works from other media into entertaining live action films and he did a great job with Ace Attorney. I highly recommend that everyone reading this check it out, if they can.
MC: This interview is part of our 100th edition and we're looking back over some of our magazine highlights. Looking back over your own career, what is your personal highlight to date?
ST: As a creator, the greatest compliment to me is when someone tells me that they played one of my games and enjoyed it. In the course of the press tour for Ghost Trick in 2010, many players from around the world expressed their love of Ace Attorney to me and it's moments like those that make me glad I became a game creator. Also, I'm deeply honoured to have been asked to take part in this special issue and having myself, my team and our work considered a highlight of your magazine's history. I'd like to thank you on behalf of everyone at Capcom. This opportunity is in itself a highlight for us.
MC: Many of our readers are keen to know, what's next for Shu Takumi?
ST: Game projects are a complex balance of so many factors: what I want to make, what players might make of my concept, what Capcom as a company wants from the game, and also broader trends in the gaming industry. My next project is in the preparation stages and I still don't know myself what form it might take by the time it's finished.
Whatever happens, though, I'll be pouring my heart and soul into it and working towards that eternal goal of hearing positive reactions from the players at the end of all the hard work.

Self Insert Positivity Day
CRASHES IN cause due to being on twitter so much for SS stuff I haven’t been too active on here BUT ANYWAY
I guess I can start with I’m Blue (or Dakota) and I’m way to too old to be suddenly into this stuff BUT HERE I AM and I enjoy my time here so yeaaaahhh-
What got you into self shipping/self insert content? Who or what inspired you?
hmmmm best way to explain is I’ve known what selfshipping was for QUITE sometime now? Like I have a an old time friend who always did it and I supported them in their fun but always sort of assumed it wasn’t for me?
I think a lot stemmed from my own personal distaste for myself and worry how people I know would respond to it? And I still feel that way but I still do it now cause...it’s fun? Like I love a lot of stuff I do with it so //shrugs
But yeah I got talked into it via a friend group and said friend back in literally only last Jan/Feb? So I haven’t doing this long unlike rping on DA or making ocs and junk
What do you like to do when it comes to self ship/self insert? Are you a content creator, or do you enjoy taking part in things?
I like the insert side to things more! I also enjoy shipping with characters I love since it allows me to express how much I love them in a very close way, which is nice. But yeah its super fun to apply my traits and interests into different verses and coming up with how my persona would grow up and interact with said world. I certainly side more on the “my insert is more of a glorified oc/persona” and I rarely use first person pronouns when talking about crushes or those inserts.
I’m really more of a content creator, I have trouble interacting too much otherwise?;; Like I’m better at expressing my thoughts through art and like making content! I do talk to others and remark on their work but really I suck at being super interacting outside of certain situations. (I always try to reply if someone contacts me though!)
How long have you been self shipping or creating self inserts for?
Hmm like I said I sort of only really started directly inserting for about a year. But I do know I’ve always sat around listening to music or watching videos and sort of projecting myself onto content I was currently enjoying. I feel that happens for a lot of people, especially early in their life so have what you will of that~
Have you made any friends within the community?
Yeah totally!! (Not gonna go at everyone cause i’m a mess)
@ask-am My bby girl who I will smack if she keeps saying she’s not good at anything??? Cause she’s amazing and super cool to talk to and we connect pretty well which is great for my stress levels. Seriously you rule~ (also you got me to give jojo a chance so thank you)
@musical-selfshipper My pride and joy of introducing Shooks into her life and by doing so ruining it. My go to fate person to ramble and wheeze at over how fate is a wild time but also a lot of hotties.
@mindless-self-pudding AND LOOK MY BBY BOY WHOM IS LIKE 80% SHIT POST AND YELLING- Seriously you are amazing and i love talking to you, your ships are A+ and thank you so so so much for getting my ass to read gk I AM FOREVER CHANGED
@sludgge A very cool bean with an art goal seriously I have thing I wanna draw soon and all i can think is to like channel your art vibe for desired results. I live for your ships with so many oddball peeps they’re always so cool (you and scream will always be my otp for you though)
@somefuckinnerdynerd A shocking friend who loves to throw the most random things at me and cracks me up always. You’re super supportive and I idolize that. Also you and Gohan are my favorite thing you guys are adorable ;w;
@selfloving-shipper I know we havent talked as much lately but seriously I’m stupidly happy I met you and talking about Lupin really made my day and seeing your reactions was great~ I came to you via one of your earlier ships and i know you dont talk about it as much due to stuff but I still adore it if i’m honest
@laviismyhusband one of the earlier people I interacted with and let me say you are great, ok? I know you go through some rough patches and it’s hard but you’re amazing and I love your content a lot. We have a lot of fandoms in common and I will always adore anyone who loves DGM like I do.
@alotta-lovin ONE OF THE SWEETEST PEOPLE IVE MET???? Like holy crap I never expected you to be as chill and kind as you are and that is amazing. Youre super talented and I love seeing your work and ships and having you explain too much to me cause I am very unaware of the stuff your into but I still like to listen~!
@tarushipping Holy shit can you say idolized intimidation?? You’re art is a goal and your personality is a gem. Seriously I am so glad we’ve bonded over GK cause you are a blast to talk to about plot things and I never get enough of it ;w;
And final love you and thanks to all these people and more cause I am so bad at recalling handles:

hello I've only started stalking your blog a few months ago and tumblr is still new to me so I don't know how to search, so maybe you've already answered this already. what's your favorite μ's character and pairing and why do you prefer writing and drawing them? And if it's not too much how about Aqours? thank you C: you have a fabulous blog and I love checking everyday
hello Anon, and thanks! I should really customize my blog page one of these days when I can sit my bums down and devote to it (read: ask others for help because athyra isn’t savvy in such things lololol) You’re right, I probably already answered in older, separate posts but I’ll restate it here again so everything is together:
favorite μ’s character and pairing
If I can only pick one, Honoka is my fav, my sun, my precious sunberry. (but I fangirl about mah waifu Kotori and no one can stop me when I’m in that mood)
EliUmi. EliUmi. EliUmi. well UmiEli too but you get the gist. I have to say it three times because that’s just how much of an OTP storm is for me. Compared to Aqours, I’m less flexible in my shipping preference - I still enjoy various ships in terms of fanarts but fanfics I only stick to my favs. My μ’sfanworks will almost always have EliUmi, NozoNico, KotoHono as the set ships, with occasional TsubaHono, KotoPana. I can never decide between MakiRin and MakiPana so let’s leave it at that. And there’s UmiMaki too :’D
Fav char to draw and write are completely different actually XD! Fav char to draw is Maki, for her floofy mane and slanted eyes but mostly the floof. Fav char to write is Nontan and yzw because GDI yanshit comes easily to me, I never have to outline anything for them. They always write themselves. Unfortunately for Honoka and Kotori I’m not very good at drawing them RIP also can’t write Eli well RIP my OTP
However, lily white forever fav subunit. *will aggressively defend*
favorite Aqours character and pairing
If I can only pick one, it’s the hardness10 penguin queen Dia. But those who follow my blog knows I go on fangirling sprees about the dumb muscle orca wonder that is Kanan.
KanaMari. KanaDia. KanaMari. KanaDia. GDI I can’t choose let’s just KanaDiaMari OT3 happily ever after asdafdfagdfasa. I have many, many Aqours ships I enjoy for now, and I’m certain it will be a long time before I can find my ‘set list’ like I did for μ’s.
I surprise myself because I assumed the 6 and the braids would be hard, but I enjoy and love drawing Mari the most. She’s also my fav char to write, Yoshiko too. And Riko. wow Guilty Kiss. I can neither write or draw CYaRon (esp Ruby, my precious child). I also can’t write from Dia’s POV student council presidents GDI
Fav subunit is \CYR/ yet I’ve drawn many AZA and GK fanarts and… very very little CYR wtf
Thanks for asking!

GGS, SWAYAS –”He who constantly keeps in mind Intent upon Ever Awake Living Light of Consciousness And never swerves from the thought of One God; And he who is adorned with full faith in Him And is wholly steeped in the Love of the Lord, And even by mistake never puts his faith in fasting Or in worship of tombs, sepulcher or crematoriums, Caring not for pilgrimages, alms, charities, Penances or austerities; Or anything else but devotion to One God; And in whose heart and soul the Divine Light Shines forth as the full moon He is known as Khalsa, the purest of the pure.”
GHULAM RASOOL PADROO –”How can I not recognise my son? I can recognize even his bone. Here, it is his entire body.”
GIACOMO CASANOVA –”The reader of these memoirs will discover that I never had any fixed aim before my eyes, and that my system… has been to glide away unconcernedly on the stream of life.”
GIACOMO LEOPARDI –”No human trait deserves less tolerance in everyday life, and gets, less, than intolerance.”
GIL ATKINSON –”The great companies and teams are those that celebrate the differences. They seek harmony not uniformity. They hire talent not colon. They strive for oneness not sameness.”
GIL ATKINSON –”You are one of a kind; therefore, no one can really predict to what heists you might soar. Even you will not know until you spread your wings!”
GILBERT CHESTERTON –”Art, like morality, consists in drawing the line somewhere.”
GILBERT K CHESTERTON –”It is the test of a good religion whether you can joke about it.”
GILBERT K. CHESTERTON –” The way to love anything is to realise that it may be lost.”
GILBERT WHITE –”Floods are ‘acts of God’, but flood losses are acts of man.”
GILLIAN ANDERSON – “Be of service. Whether you make yourself available to a friend or coworker, or you make time every month to do volunteer work, there is nothing that harvests more of a feeling of empowerment than being of service to someone in need.”
GINA HOSKINS –”Why me? When something bad happens, we often think the situation is unfair. Yet, if we were to really look at life, realizing the  amazing calling we have been given to know the truth of God, we would humbly be asking the same question: Why me? It’s amazing; but God “saved us and called us with a holy calling”, not because of anything we’ve done, but because of “His own purpose and grace” (2 Timothy 1:8-9). We’ve done nothing to deserve it, yet He still chose us. Next time something bad happens that you think you don’t deserve… remember the many things you have to be thankful for. Count your blessings. Life is “unfair!”
GIOVANNI BATISTA FELICI –”Among the many disorders which the intemperance of mankind has introduced to shorten their lives, one of the greatest, in my opinion, is the use of chocolate.”
GIUSEPPE MAZZINI –”A country is not a mere territory; the particular territory is only its foundation. The country is the idea which rises upon that foundation; it is the sentiment of love, the sense of fellowship which hinds together all the sons of that territory.”
GK CHESTERTON –”Happiness is a mystery like religion, and should never be rationalized.”
GK CHESTERTON –”The object of a New Year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul and a new nose; new feet, a new backbone, new ears, and new eyes. Unless a particular man made New Year resolutions, he would make no resolutions. Unless a man starts afresh about things, he will certainly do nothing effective. Unless a man starts on the strange assumption that he has never existed before, it is quite certain that he will never exist afterwards. Unless a man be born again, he shall by no means enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.”
GK CHESTERTON –”The true object of all human life is play. Earth is a task garden; heaven is a playground.”
GK CHESTERTON –”There are philosophies as varied as the flowers of the field, and some of them weeds and a few of them poisonous weeds. But they none of them create the psychological conditions in which I first saw, or desired to see, the flower.”
GK CHESTERTON –”Tolerance is the virtue of the man without convictions.”
GK CHESTERTON –”You say grace before meals. All right. But I say grace before the concert and the opera, and grace before the play and pantomime, and grace before I open a book, and grace before sketching, painting, swimming, fencing, boxing, walking, playing, dancing and grace before I dip the pen in the ink.”
GLADYS STAINES– “Because I have experienced forgiveness in my own life, it is possible for me to forgive others.”
GLADYS STAINES –”Experience forgiveness and forgive others. Grace is available. Once you forgive, there will be healing.”
GLADYS STAINES –”My prayer to the Lord is: Take me as I am. You know how precious stones become crystal clear? They go through polishing and hardship, and that’s how our lives should be… If we don’t experience the grace of God, we become bitter… Experience forgiveness and forgive others. Grace is available. Once you forgive, there will be healing.”
GLENWAY WESCOTT –”It is not love, but the lack of love, which is blind.”
GLORIA ALLRED –”The more I know about men, the more I like dogs.”
GLORIA STEINEM –”A pedestal is as much a prison as any small, confined space.”
GLORIA STEINEM –”Self-esteem isn’t everything; it’s just that there’s nothing without it.”
GLORIA STEINEM –”We’ve begun to raise daughters more like sons. But few have the courage to raise our sons more like our daughters.”
GM TREVELYAN –”Education has produced a vast population able to read but unable to distinguish what is worth reading.”

GOETHE –”A clever man commits no minor blunders.”
GOETHE –”Certain flaws are necessary for the whole. It would seem strange if old friends lacked certain quirks.”
GOETHE –”Daring ideas are like chessmen moved forward. They may be beaten, but they may start a winning game.”
GOETHE –”Girls we love for what they are; young men for what they promise to be.”

GOETHE –”Love is an ideal thing, marriage is a real thing.”
GOETHE –”Men are so inclined to content themselves with what is commonest; the spirit and the senses so easily grow dead to the impressions of the beautiful and perfect, that every one should study, by all methods, to nourish in his mind the faculty of feeling these things… For this reason, one ought every day at least, to hear a little song, read a good poem, see a fine picture, and, if it were possible, to speak a few reasonable words.”
GOETHE –”Nothing is more revolting than the majority; for it consists of few vigorous predecessors of knaves who accommodate themselves, of weak people who assimilate themselves, and the mass that toddles after them without knowing in the least what it wants.”
GOETHE –”Nothing shows a man’s character more than what laughs at.”
GOETHE –”Only begin and then the mind grows heated; only begin and the task, will be completed.”
GOETHE –”Talent develops in tranquility, character in the full current of human life.”
GOETHE –”The greatest thing in this world is not so much where we stand, as in what direction we are moving.”
GOETHE –”There are nine requisites for contented living: Health enough to make work a pleasure; wealth enough to support your needs; strength enough to battle with difficulties and I forsake them; grace enough to confess your sins and overcome them; patience enough to toil until some good is accomplished; charity enough to see some good in your neighbour; love enough to move you to be useful and helpful to others; faith enough to make real the things of God; HOPE enough to remove all anxious fears concerning the future.
GOETHE –”There is nothing more frightening than ignorance in action.”
GOETHE –”Those who know nothing of foreign languages know nothing of their own.”
GOETHE –”We are forced to participate in the games of life before we can possibly learn how to use the options in the rules governing them.”

GOETHE, A.P. –”To get profit without risk, experience without dander, and reward without hard work is as impossible as it is to live without being born.”
GOETHE, FAUST –”No, no! The devil is an egotist, And is not apt, without why or wherefore, “For God’s sake”, others to assist.”
GOLDA MEIR –”Old age is like a plane flying through a storm. Once you are aboard, there’s nothing you can do. You can’t stop the plane, you can’t stop the storm, and you can’t stop time. So one must accept it calmly wisely.”
GOLDA MEIR -“Whether women are better than men I cannot say—but I can say they are certainly no worse.”
GOLDAMEIR –”I can honestly say that I was never affected by the question of the success of an under taking. If I felt it was the right thing to do, I was for it regardless of the possible outcome.”
GOLDEN NASH –”One would be in less danger from the wiles of the stranger. If one’s own kin and kith where more fun to be with.”
GOLDSTONE, W.E. –”The resources of civilization against its enemies are not yet exhausted.”
GOOD OMENS –”God does not play dice with the universe. He plays an ineffable game of His own devising, which might be compared, from the perspective of any of the other players, to being involved in an obscure and complex version of poker in a pitch-dark room, with blank cards, for infinite stakes, with a Dealer who won’t tell you the rules, and who smiles all the time.”
GOODMAN ACE –”I have discovered the secret formula/or a carefree old age: ICR – FL “If you can’t recall it. Forget It”.”
GORDON ALLPORT –”Love received and love given comprises the best form of therapy.”
GORDON BETHUNE –”Do you know how much faster I can fix an airplane when I want to fix it than when I don’t want to fix it?”
GORDON L GLEGG –”There it was. Instantly, I knew I had a planet beyond the orbit of Neptune because I knew the amount of shift was what fitted the situation and that was the most instantaneous thrill you can imagine. It just electrified me! I realized that I’d made a great discovery that I’d become famous, and I didn’t know what would happen after that. It was a very intense thrill. You don’t have that kind of a thrill very often. Clyde Tom Baugh, who discovered Planet Pluto in 1930 A scientist can discover a new star, but he cannot make one. He would have to ask an engineer to do that.”
GORE VIDAL– “Whenever a friend succeeds something in me dies.”
GREEK SAYING– ” Memory and oblivion, all hail! Memory for goodness, oblivion for evil.”
GOSPEL OF EVE –”I am thou, and thou art I; and whosesoever thoumayestbe I am there. In all am scattered, and whensoever thou wiliest, thou gatherest me; and gathering Me, thou gatherest Thyself.”
GOSPEL ST LUKE –”Jesus said to them, “No one puts new wine into old wineskins; if he does, the new wine will burst the skins and will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. And no one after drinking old wine desires new; for he says, the old is good’.”
GOSPEL, ST JOHN –”In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
GOVINDAN KUTTY –”Vamana is Mahavishnu’s first incarnation in a human form. He was born in the mind of the rakshasa, Mahabali Chakravarti, who, despite being a rakshasa, believed in truth and charity That’s why Mahabali readies himself to sacrifice everything. He not only gave away to Vamana all the three worlds, he allowed Vamana to place his foot on his head, thereby making the supreme sacrifice of giving up his own ego. The three worlds stand for the three planes of consciousness, the waking, dreaming and deep-sleep states. Vamana, by placing his foot on the king’s head in a symbolic gesture, transcended not only these three planes of consciousness, but also dethroned King Bali or the egocentric existence… Onam is celebrated to commemorate this realisation.”
GRACE E EASLEY –”There is a happiness in me Which lives in spite of all The days of pain and misery That sometimes I recall. A little joy whose roots are deep, And keep on holding-on, And even though the times I weep, …Are solid as a stone. There is a happiness in me That’s near to having wings, And I’m convinced it’s sure to be Each time my Angel sings. Sometimes I feel it’s not enough, This meagre bit I give, And that this life so cold and rough, …Is not where I should live. I hunger for a different kind Of place than I have been, Not comprehended by the mind, With not a single sin To mar its pure perfection, Detract from all it is, And so in that direction,My feet must follow His. Note
just read ch. 272
and tsukishima is a whore that was a whore move (he is one of my absolute faves I'm just very upset with what he's done these recent chapters) boy's gotta make those braincells work a little!!! it's frustrating bc it feels like we were close to The Big Break from him and koito but no, they just went right back to where they were before and that makes me so very sad. this is kinda light-hearted, kinda serious I'm in a bit of a shock rn tbh I hope ur having a good day hdhdjdhsj sorry for rambling so much
Sadly...
..it was what we should ahve expect of him if he were placed in this situation. Tsukishima NEVER decided to leave Tsurumi’s side and so of course he would kill whoever were to oppose to Tsurumi.
From the backlash Tsukishima is receiving I get the feeling that after Tsukishima spared Tanigaki there was a part of the fandom who started to believe Tsukishima would never again attempt to harm one of the ‘good guys’.
So let’s look back a little at the whole scene with Tanigaki.
Tsukishima let Tanigaki live because Koito managed to persuade him this would be no harm to Tsurumi’s cause and would bring no gain to them.
Tumblr media
It’s noteworthy back then Tsukishima has pointed the harm of letting Tanigaki go.
He had threaten Koito into saying faithful. If he were to let Tanigaki escape Koito could leave as well.
Tumblr media
At this Koito said he wouldn’t leave, that even if they were to let Tanigaki go, he would still remain on Tsurumi’s side, albeith this time he wouldn’t do it blindly.
Tumblr media
Long story short, both of them decided that, for the time, they were still aligned with Tsurumi. Koito though decided he would draw a line at how far he would go for Tsurumi.
Tumblr media
I think the idea is that Koito refuses to harm someone for no good reason.
As in Tanigaki means no harm to their cause and letting him live would cause no harm so they should let him go.
The same though, wouldn’t apply if Tanigaki were to mean harm, for example siding with Hijikata. In that case killing him would be okay.
In fact we see they have no problems remaining behind a door in silence when Tsurumi psychologically tormented Asirpa and then attempted to strangle Sofia.
What Tsurumi is doing benefit their cause so they excuse it.
Who cares if Sofia dies, she’s a Russian revolutionary, she can die.
Who cares if Asirpa remains psychologically scarred and traumatized, she’s just a girl.
Their goal is more important, they’re expendable.
Then Ariko came in, trying to save Asirpa and even pointed his gun at Tsurumi and demanded the skins.
Of course they’ll side with Tsurumi, of course they’ll shoot to protect him because Ariko is a threat to their goal.
They had just heard Tsurumi’s cause is something they approve! Those aren’t the faces of who would betray Tsurumi, those are the faces of who would die for him and his goal.
Tumblr media
I wouldn’t be surprised if Noda will have the light in Tsukishima’s eyes appear in this scene in the volume version.
Anyway they probably would have killed Ariko even without this revelation, because this was what was expected of them, but after this revelation... it was kind of a given.
I’ve hoped as well we won’t come to this... but this is the most logical development, as much as I hate it.
Anime and manga has deluded us into thinking that people can turn page easily, that Koito and Tsukishima could just leave Tsurumi because he’s a ‘big bad’.
But Tsurumi isn’t the ‘big bad’ from their perspective, he’s just a man fighting for their cause and they are soldiers, used to kill who oppose to their boss.
We love Ariko. We’re grief striken for Ariko.
But for them he’s just another enemy in the list of people they’ve killed for their goal. His life isn’t more relevant than the one of the guards they attacked and killed in Abashiri.
They are rebels.
They have lost sight of the fact the Army serves to protect people from foreign threats, not to pursue personal targets.
So the worst part of all this is that what Tsukishima did was predictable, it fit perfectly with his arc, with the kind of person Tsukishima is, a soldier, with how Tsukishima has ultimately agreed with Tsurumi’s goal.
And the light in his eyes is clearly not because he has murdered Ariko, no, I’m sure he had felt no joy in it, the light in his eyes is because he has finally found back his hope, his faith in his cause.
Tumblr media
He’s among the many characters fighting for a place in which they can be, for happiness.
It’s Tsukishima. It could be anyone else, even Sugimoto killing Shiraishi should Shiraishi betray him, because Noda has said if this were to happen Sugimoto wouldn’t hesitate in killing Shiraishi and it would hurt, it would hurt even more but this is the kind of people we’re dealing with.
Although they aren’t monsters who enjoy killing, as some like to paint them, they don’t also hesitate to kill who gets in their way.
There’s no good here, there’s no people with high morals, even Asirpa said she would kill if it’s to protect Sugimoto and I really pray she would never get to that point.
This is a tale of our world, a tale were Ogata is completely right, everyone can kill everyone else PROVIDED THE RIGHT MOTIVATION.
Tsukishima, sadly, had the right motivation and did it and broke my heart and crushed my hope but it’s not that he went OOC, it’s that the story served him the right setting, when I was hoping the story would refrain to do so.
And a side of me is afraid, afraid because it’s clear Noda isn’t going to make things easy for my poor boys.
He’ll serve them on a silver platter situations that will push them to do terrible things. And I’m not sure any of them will manage to refuse taking a bite.
I’m sad, I’m heartbroken, Ariko was awesome because he managed to make the right choice despite how hard it was and he definitely didn’t deserve this, Ariko was a good person trying to do something good even when Shiraishi said they didn’t know if they could trust him, even if Ariko actually knew nobody trusted him. He did the right thing because it was the right thing, because he was the sort who would help people in need regardless.
Such a person deserved to live, I wanted him to live. We need people like him.
This though, mattered little to who killed him and that chose that pursuing their goal was THE RIGHT THING. And whoever got in the way had to die.
Selfishness versus selflessness.
GK world is cruel and I want to cry because it’s the same as ours, because our world too has plenty of people who would sacrifice someone like Ariko.
And this, this is the worst thing.
Sorry for the depressing answer and thank you for your ask.
