one of my favourite things about epic the musical is the reused sets and aspects. for example, the "i'm just a man" was introduced in the first saga, troy, and is still being used in recent and upcoming songs, because it's such an important concept and piece about odysseus and his journey. same goes for "man vs. monster" but it's from the same song. the cool thing is (in my humble opinion) is that in ruthlessness from the ocean saga, IS also a new aspect that is being played now. in BOTH "the underworld" and "monster" from the underworld saga ody sings "ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves..." and "[...] if ruthlessness is mercy"
and that's SO smart. like hello? introducing new moral values/views is so AAA.
I’ve known that it’s insane that we keep getting saga after saga in such a short period of time, but I was listening through epic (again, as one does) and it struck me that I am still not normal about any of the sagas, particularly the underworld and thunder sagas still- and now we have only two to go?!?
While listening to Epic, I noticed an interesting pattern with how antagonists are portrayed, and how Odysseus’ interactions with them are coded.
In Epic, the monsters Odysseus faces are rarely fighting for their own sake. Polyphemus attacks Odysseus’ crew to avenge his sheep, and Poseidon destroys his ships as revenge for his son’s suffering. Similarly, Circe only threatens Odysseus to protect her nymphs. Odysseus does not kill any of these enemies, and while he is occasionally criticized for letting them go free, the overall implication is that he did the right thing by sparing them.
Then we hit the Thunder Saga, and Odysseus begins his arc as a ‘monster’ by killing the sirens. His actions here are brutal, and whether or not they are justified is, I think, up to the listener. However, it’s significant that the sirens are the first foes Odysseus faces on his journey who aren’t either defending or avenging what they love. They attack unprovoked, and while Odysseus’ method of execution is gory, he is never punished for it by other characters within the narrative. Apollo is the only one to protest, and even he is swayed easily when Athena says (among other things) that the sirens were “trying to do him worse.” The sirens attacked first, and while Odysseus’ response was ‘monstrous,’ his crew obeyed his commands and he was not challenged or ostracized for giving said commands. He is only treated as a monster when he yields to Scylla, who also attacked without provocation.
Thus, in Epic, the monsters fighting to protect or avenge their loved ones are protected by the very story - killing them may be more convenient, but it isn’t the answer. However, the monsters who attack without provocation, for their own amusement or satisfaction, do not receive such respect. Killing them is acceptable, and cooperating with them is monstrous.
By this logic, Odysseus is justified in his actions, however atrocious. He attacks to protect his family, and therefore deserves mercy.
“What’s a title a goddess could lend if ill never sleep at night”
Compared to
“Maybe if I helped you reach your goal- Life could be that bright, I could sleep at night”
It just shows how Athena changed from thinking Odysseus was being dramatic about his guilt with his dead crew members to understanding how and why Odysseus felt that way because she feels the same way Odysseus felt, she had no way of knowing if Odysseus was dead after My Goodbye and that guilt that is shown in We’d be Fine- just the pure guilt and reconsideration of if Athena did something different, would Odysseus still be there. That just makes her more human and I love it so much
Crying because the repeat of “please don’t make me do this” in thunder bringer made me realise that Odysseus isn’t saying “don’t make me choose between these awful things”, he’s saying “don’t make me have to do this awful thing”. Because deep down, it isn’t a choice for Odysseus. He’s already made up his mind.
my favourite thing is that its been 3 weeks and we're still asking about the tincan ocean mishap and how it wasnt supposed to happen in the way that it did.
"i did not know that wasnt allowed i promise you...we had nobody with us to say matthew dont be an idiot dont do that" and other lies to tell yourself

"i think somebody said its technically not allowed but i said it was too late it already happened" oh so there was someone who did do a matthew dont be a idiot dont do that to him but it was AFTER the fact huh and they only allowed this to happen on the terms that the cup wouldnt touch the water...
so heres matthew dunking the cup into the ocean and also matthew and ekky throwing benny overboard during the incident in question and yes multiple local news sources had to reassure viewers afterwards that cup in saltwater should be fine (it was not fine)
Las Olas Beach | 6.25.24 (x)(x)(x)
[benny pic came from his igstory so we mourn the fallen sourcelink o7]
heres them bringing up the cup ocean incident while sasha was in wimbledon to cheer on his gf and guest starred on the volkswagen desk for a bit a week after the incident
Wimbledon Championships 2024 | 7.4.24 (x)
and its so funny he says that he knows saltwater is bad for the cup because...
id like to bring up exhibit A (written account of him bringing the cup over to the beach which incited the cup ocean incident)
and exihibit B (visual of him bringing the cup over to the beach which once again incited the cup ocean incident)
it isnt clear if sasha was aware of the whole "dont dunk the corrosive metal into the ocean" before or after the incident i just think its particularly funny how now he has to go on tv and go yeah that was bad we cant do that from now on like a scolded kitten
and also brady getting upset over not getting credited for the idea because this is what matthew said about it when asked the day after it happened
Pat McAffe Show | 6.26.24 (x)(x)
is he absolutely in every right to get a little pissy about it? yes. does it also make him seem even more like a little brother in the process especially with the way matthew had to go BY THE WAY. IT WAS BRADYS IDEA. AND HE WAS MAD AT ME FOR NOT SAYING THAT SO IM SAYING THAT NOW BUT ONLY AFTER TARYN BROUGHT IT UP. oh yeah absolutely. from one little brother to another it very much reads like that.
EDIT: it was actually ellie his fiancee who quips this because she was in attendance during the hospital visit (youll see her in the bg here) when this interview takes place and that makes it even cuter that she was like hey remember to give your baby brother credit oh this family is so cute 😭😭
Odysseus has more strength than I did because if my men decided to open the bag when they could literally see the fucking fires burning at the shore of our homeland, I would've told Poseidon to kill all of them in exchange for me just getting the fuck back home.
Someone tell me why I can imagine a full on stage production of epic in my head like perfectly, down to blocking and sets 😭 I have no way of making this real, not that I would until it's completely released anyway but it's consuming me
I am capable of SOME thought now and I want to say.
I know everyone talks about "Everything Changed Since Polites" which yeah, owie. BUT!!! It's PLACEMENT I think is so important.
It's the final line from the men while most likely rowing, before our lad, Odysseus starts simping/daydreaming and passes out. The "Never really know who you can trust". Polites WHOLE thing was "hey! We should trust more! More kindness!"
I think it's more of a "foreshadow" as "If Polites were here, he would tell us to trust Odysseus. To have faith in him. That he's NOT lying to us and that it's not treasure and WILL save us. But Polites is not here. So..."
