I'm thinking about Thalia Grace.
In the Percy Jackson TV show, the shades who go to Asphodel don't meander aimlessly for all eternity. Instead, they physically transform into the asphodel plants. And that got me thinking about Thalia -- a tree with a human soul. Laid down her life at the age of twelve, and now trapped in an evergreen limbo, straddling the line between life and death, just as the shades in Asphodel are somewhere between Paradise and Punishment.
Then (spoilers for a 15-year-old children's novel), she's restored. She wakes up. Her life is her own again, but at the same time, it isn't. There's a prophecy, see, and the prophecy says that she will do ... something when she turns sixteen that will either save or doom the world. So she comes up with a clever solution: she joins Artemis's Hunt and takes the eternal youth that goes along with it. She is now frozen at fifteen years, 364 days old until she leaves the Hunt. She trusts Percy to be a worthy prophecy hero, and watches him grow up.
Two years pass. The prophecy is fulfilled, and she no longer needs to be fifteen indefinitely. But she stays with the Hunters. And why wouldn't she? She's made friends among them. Her long-lost brother returns to her, and he's exactly her age now. She gets to watch him make friends, fall in love, and decide what he wants out of his life. Sure, there's another villain who wants to end the world, but she's beaten that before. She can do it again.
And so it goes. Year after year. Her brother dies barely a year after finding him again. She doesn't even get to say goodbye. And there's another villain who wants to end the world. She has to set aside her feelings, her human heart in an immortal body, and set things right once more.
She stays with the Hunters. Why? The prophecy has come and gone. She's already outlived the only family she had left. And she remains in this loop, somewhere between life and death. How much more of this will she take? How many more friends and loved ones will she lose? Eventually, all of them. Percy and Annabeth are on track towards their happily ever after, but they'll die someday. Thalia will be alone, no different from when she was a tree on Half-Blood Hill.

"[...] narrative interest in Kingdom of Heaven focuses not on the outcome of the conflict between the Crusader Kingdom and Saladin but on the way it was fought, on means rather than ends, performance rather than goals. In the end, how the hero performs is more important than the fact that he lost the battle and surrendered the city. [...]
"Scott perhaps best encapsulates the anxieties that surround hard-bodied masculinity and the mourning for its loss in his uncanny image of Baldwin, the leper king of Jerusalem, whose death precipitates the destruction of the Crusader Kingdom. Rather than focusing the audience's attention on the ravages of the disease of leprosy (at least until after his death), Scott depicts him in a funereal image of a male body swathed in white robes and veils, his face hidden by a beautiful but lifeless silver mask. Baldwin is beautiful but inanimate on the outside - a hard-bodied shell - living but hideous on the inside. His voice detached from his body, Baldwin becomes a ghostly acousmatic, despite his physical presence onscreen. His voice seems to issue from an inanimate shell, cut off from its origin in a human body. He is his own - and his kingdom's - funeral effigy. In this figure the hard-bodied masculinity of the crusaders in Kingdom of Heaven is exposed as a performance, a disguise that hides the rottenness within the kingdom beneath its beautiful but dead veneer. The image allows not only the crusaders but Scott's audience to mourn lost glories."

Could I possibly get some personal stories about people who resisted accepting pharmaceutical medications for their mental health issues but ultimately decided to pursue them as a means for recovery? What caused your resistance? What caused you to change your mind? How did the process of transitioning to pharmaceuticals go for you (was it difficult, successful, did you have to go through multiple medications, do you still experience symptoms or side effects that may lead you to change your mind again, etc.)?
Asking for a friend and the friend is me
Big thank

Hit up a used bookstore today. I'm looking for old illustrations, basically, to collage into my junk journal style binder. Hopefully coming from books that would otherwise wind up in the garbage.
Had two interesting finds today!
The first: a book from the 70s about healthy herbs. Whoever owned it underlined a TON of stuff under slippery elm and mallow root (sore throat maybe?). They also left behind two things: a pressed leaf, and a fairly recent looking baby photo, used as a bookmark! Maaaaybe not the best choice for a bookmark. Has some nice illustrations!

Second: an even older book about herbal remedies, that appears to have once been a Catholic school library book in Buffalo, NY, though originally printed in London! It's still got its library card with names and everything, and some sort of like... Mary prayer card (idk, I'm not a Catholic, I just write one). I'm not sure how old it is (I think from 1950, the printing date is like... roman numerals?), but let's just say kids at the school were reading this book before my parents were even born. Interestingly, the only page with a fold or note in it is, again, slippery elm (follklore: ends pregnancies; coincidence at a catholic school?). It's got beautiful illustrations though, in between hilarious rants about girls PAINTING THEIR NAILS GREEN HOW SCANDALOUS and some... interesting remedies that I wouldn't really trust anymore. 😂

oh my god i just got to the pinnochimon's dangerous game episode (43)
oh my god you all were not kidding about that puppet packing heat
#sky talks#digimon#digimon adventure#the amount of out of context screenshots i just sent to our brother#i know it's serious in-text but i couldn't stop laughing jknfdsjkbfsdfs#like god damn how the hell did the dub manage to get around that at ALL??#i also know the stylistic contrast of Cute Cartoony Characters vs that's just a real ass gun is like#an artistic choice that the creators probably made#because again the text of the episode pretty explicitly shows that pinochimon doesn't really care about the consequences of shooting people#i doubt it's naivete so much as a lack of comprehension for the lives of others being more than “toys” to him#especially seeing his insecurities when tk calls him out on not having a single friend#and then when he “makes” a friend it's explicitly a doll shaped after him#because he's the only person he could see himself being a friend to#i always have such mixed feelings about the dark master's arc for reasons that this rewatch might actually remedy#but pinochimon's arc was always interesting in that it's one of few arcs in the original series that isn't super subtle about paralleling#one of the digidestined's current crises#like sub or dub it's super obvious that pinochimon is an inverse of yamato's crest of friendship#and by extension yamato himself#insecurity and a lack of trust in other people is what drives them both to suffer#yamato because he can't seem to imagine others in the group caring for his brother as much as he can#(which is a long-term issue but ramps up again in the dark master's arc unsurprisingly)#pinochimon because he can't trust any other digimon to be his equals#if anything pinochimon#along with all the dark masters#are like coworkers not friends#anyways#it's still extremely fucking jarring seeing that puppet boy packing heat

I'm currently drawing something that has Jesse, Emily and Esteves together, and it's really highlighting how unnecessarily extra some of the clothes in The Oldest House are. Like Jesse's here in a full Board-themed suit, Emily has the little triangle shirt thing and the fun sleeves, but Esteves is just... wearing a blue shirt...

It's flatly inaccurate to describe Alex Casey as being afraid of dying.
Death, for better or for worse, is an old acquaintance to him, so old that the time to cut them out of his life is long past; an association he's forced to defend as a matter of personal honour; and like a bad friend he feels like he owes one too many favours to, he doesn't have the heart to take a step back, to assert a boundary, to tell the knowledge of the inevitable, I think we're bad for each other.
Whatever he is afraid of, it isn't dying, nor is it the pain of loss, nor is it the chill of inevitability -- he wakes up every day and takes his weary resignation on with his morning cup of joe, setting the low point of his mood so he can then spend the day wading into the consequences of the worst of humanity and not lose himself further. There are, after all, worse consequences to being alive than simple oblivion.

(Reprised/rephrased version of a previous post I made)
Can people on the internet stop looking at an artist drawing a character fat and immediately going "that's disgusting you're some kind of freak because no one would want to look like that irl". Do you realise how weird you sound.
