A thing I like to make besides comics is custom cassettes, sometimes! I made the Omega-3 tape for a friend a while back, but I JUST now got around to making the Dedf1sh one recently after meaning to for A Goddamn Minute

The Acht tape is a continuous mix @ardnin made and posted to Youtube, I've been in love with it for ages and if you're into weird Splatoon music you ought to give it a listen here.

The best way to listen to cassettes is in low quality, of course, so here's a short video of the Dedf1sh mix through my oldass walkman and my newass headphones.

Coming from someone who watches q!Baghera's pov from afar, there's something really sad about her trying so hard to get into a family on one side and almost refusing the one she already has on the other.

"Almost" because ofc she's not refusing to be Dapper's mom, or anything, that's not what I mean, but when offered to live close to Pomme other parents (q!BBH and q!Aypierre), she didn't say no, but she didn't say yes either, she said she'll think about it as a second house, because she really wants to be close by the one she decided would be her father figure.

It's devastating to see how growing up parentless made her cling to someone who is not able or not willing to give her what she needs right now and overlook friendships she could have.

And sure, q!Badboyhalo was mostly offering it to make sure Dapper will have people nearby for when he'll be... you know, gone. But still there's something about her willing to rather dig a tunnel under someone's house than build near a co-parent and her other child's place.

In watching more interviews with Liv about Van and the escalation of Van's pragmatism to such dark degrees, I find myself genuinely baffled that anyone could ever think Van the bad guy. I mean, I'm perplexed at finding ANY of these girls The Bad Guy. The bad guy is the situation. It's being lost. It's freezing. It's starving. It's being scraped down to the barest bone of being alive. They make choices that might be snippy, or cruel, or hard-headed, sure--Shauna refusing to just hash it out with Jackie; Jackie being too stubborn to come inside; Taissa refusing to discuss her situation plainly; etc--but by the time we reach the end of season 2, it doesn't even matter. Petty bullshit doesn't matter. Jealousy doesn't matter. Those things are still going to be present and complicated, because--for all their choices, for all the distancing they're trying to do--these kids ARE still human beings. But it isn't the point.

The point is survival. Plain, simple, straightforward. Van's pragmatism is survival. It is the difference between living another day with blood on your teeth or dying pretty. It is the difference between fighting forward through the fire and the snow and the hell of it all, and laying down to die. Van knowing, in watching the ritual violence of Shauna beating Lottie nearly the death, that they will be killing and eating one another soon. Van coming up with the cards for the hunt. Van not blinking when the moment comes, Van choosing a weapon that doubles as a tool to bring the body back, Van refusing to apologize for staying alive--it's not evil. It's not Bad Guy behavior. It's purely about survival, because there is nothing else left to her--or to any of them. They can play the pretty little Sweet Angel Girl game and die, or they can get dirty, bloody, horrific and fight. Van chooses the fight. Van chooses to fight for herself, for her lover, for her team, even knowing not everyone is going to make it out...because the alternate path there is that no one makes it out. Van knew the baby wouldn't live. Van knows the rest of them won't, either. Not unless they start making the hard choices.

And, honestly, the fact that Van sees this narrative coming. Comes up with this plan. Brings out the cards. To me, that is the opposite of Bad Behavior. That is as close to justice as anyone can find in the wilderness. If someone else came up with an idea, maybe it would have come down to voting--but that would have had such a human element to it, with bitterness or hostility or whatever ultimately petty shit always comes of humans selecting who to Other. The cards don't leave room for that. It isn't fair, because the situation isn't fair, because Man vs. Nature isn't fair, but it's as close to a just system as they could possibly find. It's the kindest solution to an unwinnable game. Not to bring it back to American Gods again, but all I can think is "it's easy, there's a trick to it: you do it, or you die." Van gave them that.

Another work in progress I've been slowly working on whenever I found some time in the last couple of weeks. I'm really excited to finish it because it's turning out better than I expected. :D (I'm much further ahead with the illustration now than this photo but I don't want to show the near finished picture.)

A friend inspired me to try making something traditional for a change, and I decided to fish out my alcoholic markers that I haven't properly touched in many many years.

Unfortunately all the greens I wanted to use are here. One gave its last breaths for me that you can see in the colored picture, in the rest of the picture I had to improvise most of the colors.

I think I did a good job but in hindsight I wish I hadn't put such a strong red and orange here as base colors, especially around Hed. The darkness of the red is also too close to Liv's skin tone which I am quite upset with myself about.. :/ It gave me a headache later on trying to cover it up, and I'm still not really happy with this detail because there's only so much I could do to fix it...

Oh well...

I am very happy with the water tho. I think it looks cool. :)

Wanted to make a lazy summer day illustration before summer ends. (The weather passed me tho, it's already cold enough for long pants and a sweater. 😅)

After I colored everything with the markers, I started going over it with colored pencils, and I'm nearing the finish now! (Then I have to figure out the best way to scan it because I'm drawing on an A3 paper.)

(technically this wasnt part of the assignment, which was "write an essay and read at least one full page to the class" so the reason why there's those huge blocks of text is because that is taken directly from the essay. i can condense things if I WANT to condense them)

The choice to parallel Fitz/Sophie, Alden/Quinlin, and Tiergan/Prentice was possibly not a conscious one, since Messenger has never attempted to hint at the existence of homosexuality before, but it still resonates with hundreds of queer teen readers who look at the portrayal of utter devotion and trust between two men and think, wow. this is what i see in myself.​" The image is a quote from Neverseen, reading "'What did you give him?' Granite asked, cradling Prentice like a baby. Prentice's head lolled to the side, his body limp and pale." / "Granite held Prentice tighter, whispering, 'It's going to be okay.'"

Messenger establishes very early on in the series that all elves, no matter who they are, are gorgeous in comparison to humans. For some reason that I’m sure has no correlation to Sophie and therefore Messenger’s personal biases (aka Western hetero/cisnormativity and gender roles), every single elven character is slim with clear skin and no glasses. For some reason, beards seem to be impossible for elves to grow naturally, since the only time facial hair ever appears on anyone’s face is when they take an elixir to change their appearance." An image of Sophie with her human family is captioned "Sophie with her ugly nasty disgusting human family apparently​".

Slide Nine: Text reading "Valin is a member of “the drooly boys” who, had they been “human, would’ve been skinny, with acne and braces. Since they were elves, they were fairly good-looking—or they could’ve been if they hadn’t slicked their hair into greasy ponytails” (Messenger KOTLC 170). It seems elves have evolved past the need for brown eyes, acne, crooked teeth, facial hair beyond eyebrows, and variations in body fat—not to mention most other features that make people unique. ​There is indeed a single elf who is fat and even has wrinkles (elves also don’t physically age past 30, fun fact). He alters his appearance with berries that swell his skin, making him the only unique body type besides Sophie’s human family, who are consistently thrown in terrible comparison to her new, movie-star-looking adoptive parents. The berries also make him smell, interestingly enough.​" Images of Councillors Zarina, Terik, and Clarette line the right side of the slide.

Slide Ten: Text reading: "By portraying the elves as the standard for beauty and then removing any pimple, stretch mark, fat roll, body hair, crooked tooth, big nose, or any of the thousands of features that add depth to faces and bodies, Messenger tells us that perfection lies in eliminating all “flaws.” She tells her young readers that they are desirable if they look like Sophie, or Biana, or Keefe—not Stina with her curly hair, or Dex’s too-skinny arms, or Forkle’s large stomach, or my human body.​" The family portrait of the Vackers is also there.

DAs can and have done a lot of good, occasionally up to and including refusing to enforce laws they think are evil bullshit.

In her case, she used the position to help start a program that literally said 'this nonviolent drug offender should go to school instead of prison, actually.' Which reduced recidivism and is EXACTLY the kind of thing I would like to see more of from our justice system.
