Thinking thinking about Tails and Nine again and how both of their identities revolve around the number of tails they have and how it makes me cry

Tails, rather fitting, calling on the oddity of his mutation; Tails, theres more than one, more than there should be naturaly. But thanks to Sonic and friends, he finds it something that makes him special. Having two of them, they expand on his worth, they add to his ability set, a lot of times complimenting the powers of those around him. His extra tail, something that he was bullied and ostracized for, he now carries with pride and slaps on as a signature onto his inventions and items of his belonging, something that is called out each time when being addressed by his nickname, something that makes him completely unique.

(^And I think that's just utterly beautiful^)

Nine, is also named after his tails, but that's all his identity has been reduced to; the absolute number of them. There's two natural ones, and seven mechanical ones, nine in total. And that's all his name is, a number, a dehumanizing (demobianizing?) statistic. No one was there to save him, no one was there to make him see that one extra tail as a gift, instead the world around him made sure to only make it seem as something that made him different, an oddity, a freak. His natural tails condemed him into a life of suffering and loneliness, while his mechanical ones were created for self defense purposes from those calling him a freak. And he hides the natural tails away, between the mechanical ones, almost perfectly blending in with the fucked up, robotocizised city of his upbringing.
