inoue toshiki is a prolific writer for sentai and kamen rider who we love/hate depending on the person for his larger than life personality, noticeable showrunning style, selection of oddly specific tropes he's repeated over and over for 30+ years, and ability to write things that are simultaneously gay and homophobic.

as per usual when he comes up to the uninitiated i really just recommend trying out one of his seasons to gauge where you might fall on the love/hate spectrum.

Stuff I Watched This Past Week Or So

Completed- 

FLCL: This show rules, love the characters, plot was interesting and didn't explain much but also, you never needed to explain every last detail when its arguably more fun to speculate on that stuff. 9/10

Karas: The Prophecy- Watch for the action, npt the plot. Characters are meh and the plot goes no where, hints of one but I couldn't really find any overall themes or really interesting things it did. Expected more gore tbh. I heard this was released as two movies in the states and the other one has a better plot, but just watch the fights online, there is barely any story to be told here lol. 5.5/10

Anyone But You: "The Straights Are At It Again: The Movie" . Had some funny bits I guess but really stunk overall, kinda hated it by the end despite thinking the set up had a fun concept behind it. 4/10

Kamen Rider W: One of the best tokusatsu's I have seen, one of the best shows I have seen period. Its themes of memory, vengeance, death and loss are covered perfectly. It has amazing music, fight scenes, characters, it has everything. If you like tokusatsu, detective shows, crime shows, whatever it is, GIVE IT A WATCH! 10/10

The Iron Claw:  A powerful tragedy that was depressing as fuck to watch at points but so interesting to see. A bit goofy acting at points and WOW those wigs, plus it isn't that historically accurate, but I dont think it entirely brings the film down, especially with wrestling being more or less a backdrop to, you know, the tragedy at hand and how shitty Fritz Von Erich is. 7.5/10

Godzilla Minus One- GOSEEITGOSEEITGOSEEIT AAAAAA. Seriously, its amazing and best if you go in blind, take my word for it please. 10/10

Ultraman Tiga (Current Episode 39):watching this as I type it, every episode is pretty fun, either being really visually and aesthetically cool or giving us what, to me at least, is interesting to see for a Ultra show (mainly talking about episodes 37 and 38 here, 37 is really trippy and beautiful, while 38's plot is "hey lets create mass panic for research purposes and also just lie to the people we have to protect, because we are the good guys!" and thankfully its not presented as a good thing lol)

can i make a kamen rider watch order recommendation. i think you already plan to watch kuuga after showa riders which is good i think it is a vital part of the grand prix as it was originally meant to be a final homage/send-off to the showa riders. but after that i recommend continuing through its successors agito and ryuki in airing order. the reason being that i think they are an interesting trio in how heisei rider came to be formed, and particularly ryuki switched up the formula and changed the game so hard i think it would be fun to see in context how that happen and to replicate the feeling of being a kamen rider fan in 2002 watching the game get changed. after ryuki you can do what you want though imo cause by faiz the new formula was established. well that is just my little recommendation you can take it or leave it. but it is what i have been thinking about. i have never seen anyone do the grand prix before so this is a rare opportunity to get my vote in. ok goodnight

INTERESTING i've already had someone shilling agito to me so in the theoretical raffle i had planned for what i do post grand prix it would have twice as good a chance as anything else in there... my secret though is that ryuki doesn't actually sound all that interesting to me personally. but i might change my mind about that one later. like it sounds fine i just find it harder to watch series that are widely beloved and nothing that i've seen about the characters has really pulled me in? sorry to the asakura warriors i know of him but i don't know if he would be better to just stay a weird wiggly cryptid in my mind. that again could totally change we'll see how i feel in the future about it i've got a WHILE before i get to that point

OK I JUST FINISHED RYUKI entirely non spoiler review i liked it a lot...! all of the characters were incredibly charming to me whether it be their writing (most of the cast) actors (most of the cast also but mainly ouja) or whatever.... the riders of course are awesome + i love the suit design but i really came around to liking shinji's coworkers it was like coming home to drive again. its very kind to its characters in a writing sense i dont know how id describe it other than it isnt cruel.. everyones very respected by the narrative id say. very few moments of "oh fuck OFF whyd they do that" if any at all. not thay there werent "and whyd you do that" moments. good and bad writing will have you laid up like and now why did he say that.

I HAVE TO SAY the shift cars are really fun to me but i think the eyecons win. like theres just a guy in there? im henshining with the brothers grimm or whatever? and now i know how joan of arc felt? thats awesome i love you ghost

My Quick Thoughts on Kamen Riders (the ones I've watched so far.)

Gaim: A really neat coming of age story with a bunch of punks that fight with dancing and then later POKEMON. I remember it dragging a bit but its been forever since I've watched it. I hate there's just a point that all of the villains use the same weapon and that was boring as fuck. Outside of that I just remember enjoying it. I need to rewatch it.

Ghost: I do like the idea of this one but man Takeru coming back to life once (not including when he gets turned into a ghost in episode 1) is impactful but every time afterwards feels like an ass pull. This one felt like there was form bloat imo. I get it but it feels like they introduce a few forms that are only used once. I get it when rider does this but it felt too often and fillery to me. Outside of that the plot is a bit messy but enjoyably. I like the main character and the cast is pretty neat. I love the fun facts about the historical figures that are in the eyecons. Its very ok. The third rider in that is cool though. I love it when villains turn into good guys ok.

Zero-One: I HATED this concept as soon as I watched it. It feels like Kamen Rider Detroit: Become Human. There are some moments that made me laugh in this that weren't intentionally funny. I feel like the themes in this feel really fucking jarring with them being like "Robots are people too!" ESPECIALLY nowadays with AI causing more problems. I dropped this one cause I couldn't get new episodes and I'm glad I did. I think the more it went on the more I would of hated it. I do love that one of the villains has his company's trademark in his transformation jingle though.

Build: Easily has to have some of the best cliffhangers in any Rider I've watched. Every episode felt REALLY important and it always felt like it was moving the plot forward no matter what. A lot of riders start out with some monster of the day format to give you an idea of the characters but they don't really move the plot forward, Build is not like that at all. Every episode of Build just BUILDS of each other in a really fun way. I loved the main 2 riders and the later 2 are also good. I love there's a lot of foreshadowing in this that's played off as a joke and later OH WAIT IT WASN'T A JOKE. The forms are good, the fight scenes are good, I loved the plot a lot too. The only thing I think I hate is there's a few moments when Build could of finished off the big bad but doesn't for no reason. Unless I missed something it feels like he could of ended him early and focused on how to get the world back to normal. I also did not care for the Grey Bottle arc. I feel like they really wanted to make something that wasn't important now important. Plus that's when I think the show really slows down plot wise too. Outside of that it's still my 2nd favorite in the whole series and I really love it a lot.

Geats: Easily my favorite Rider ever that I've watched so far. Form the concept that this is fucking a Rider based on fucking FORTNITE made me really excited cause I felt like Rider would work REALLY well with this idea. Not only did it work well but I think it was way better than I expected it to be. The main 4 riders are amazing and I love every single one of them. I think these are the most fleshed out characters in any Rider I've seen so far. The story is really fun to watch, the power-ups are cool and GOD Geats has the BEST fight scenes in any Rider imo. They feel really fun to watch and the cinematography is just amazing. The CGs also don't feel that distracting in this too. I can't stress this enough, Geats has got to be one of the best Kamen Riders I've ever watched. I know some people are not a fan of how these latest episodes have been treating a certain character but I don't think its bad. Easily my favorite Rider.

Faiz/555: I swear to god if people talked to each other half of the conflict on this show would not exist, but that is the point. Faiz having its main themes about communication is neat. While frustrating to watch at times, I really love the dynamic the main cast has with each other. I love that there is 2 different groups of the main cast too. It creates this neat contrast on what group vs the other. There's a few plot lines I think should of been resolved sooner but there's a lot of neat moments of character misunderstanding another's motives cause they don't have the context. Faiz is really amazing EXPECT for the last 10 episodes. That is the most rushed arc in any Rider and the ending feels anti-climatic. Episode 50 has a really good fight scene but that's not the final fight. So the real final fight that they were hyping up for MOST of the show is just like 1 short scene and its over. It feels like nothing was resolved in a meaningful way. Don't get me started with that kid plot line that goes nowhere and is just there to be there. Faiz could of been a classic but then they just forced it to end at episode 50. It needed at least 10 more episodes and it could of been great. I still recommend it but man that ending is fucking rough.

Revice: I think its mid as fuck. I am about 15 episodes and I think its just OK. The main character bores me, the rest of the cast is very passable. I think the only interesting one is Daiji Igarashi and even then I'm so conflicted on him. On one hand cool that we get to explore this conflicts through his demon, on the other hand it feels like they wanted to go through it too fast. I do like that he gets over his demon in a cool way and he's himself forever... UNLESS HE'S KNOCKED OUT OOPS NOW HES HIS EVIL DEMON SELF AGAIN. I fucking hated that in one of the fights. It comes out of nowhere and it feels like it ruins his arc of over coming his own personal demons. The fact that they can swap who takes over the body could of been neat but they make it clear that Daji "defeated" Kagero and reclaimed his body. So the swap feels so jarring and out of nowhere. I hate it so much and it bugs me even more that he is still evil. The more I think about this plot point the more it bugs me. Outside of that I think the music is nice. George and Vice make the show for me and that's really about it. I think the pacing is REALLY bad in Revice. The pacing gets better as it goes on but those first 7 episodes have some real bad pacing. It feels like they wanna rush to the fight scenes which I know you gotta do one in every episode (at least it feels like it) in Rider but man can you set them up instead of rushing to them. The first episode feels like a whiplash with how quickly they want to get to the transformation. The fight scenes are a mixed bag here too. I know Rider has a lot of CG in their fight scenes but Revice relies on it TOO much. In episode 4 there's a fight scene that's a chase and that's cool on paper, but then you see it and it looks like a really bad PS2 game. Most of the Buddy forms are like this too and it looks so bad. I love the idea of the Buddy system though but man they do it so badly. I'll give Revice this, it has A TON of cool ideas but it never really feels like it capitalizes on them vs a lot of other riders. Its too overambitious for its own good which I can appreciate but man it makes the quality of the show pretty bad at times.

I did not expect the Deadman being made from a Deadman Kaijin Stamp rather than the Orangutan Proto ViStamp.

I actually spoiled myself accidentally, and knew Suzu was a Villain.

But I expected the Maid to also be a part.

The Worms didn't Clock Up.

Terui really being treated like a Main Rider with all his post series Cameos.

I couldn't help but wish Kaido would Henshin, either into a RioTrooper, or inherit Faiz

I actually thought Kaido died when the Orphnoch Kaijin Stamp was made.

But the End Credits imply all three appeared?

Oblivian was pretty cool.

Working like a Phase 2 deedman, other than the Stamp self-destructing, made sense.

Lol Ryu's Main Rider treatment... Honestly I didn't expect Minehiro Kinomoto of all people to be so enthusiastic about returning. He's returned the most times out of anyone in the W cast, since he also reprised his role in Drive and Zi-O V Cinemas. Seeing Trial again was a real treat though :D

And I swear I'm going to die when I see the ED's MV. Hiromi and Ikki (but mostly Hiromi) singing and playing guitars? HELP.

As for Revice's anniversary aspect... well, it's the same deal as with Fourze, actually. Both series came out just after a major milestone celebration season which heavily integrated the anniversary aspect, Decade and Zi-O respectively. It would be like, "Didn't they just do this, why are they doing it again so soon?"

For some perspective, one of the criticisms that flew about when Ryusoulger revealed a dinosaur theme was that it was only six years since the last Sentai to have a dinosaur theme, Kyouryuger. In contrast, Zi-O was only three years ago, and not even a year had passed since its most recent release (V-Cinemas which were crossovers with Decade, no less). And then Sougo and Oma Zi-O showed up in Superhero Senki, too- the same movie ReVice made their debut in!

Everyone would just have Zi-O on the brain if Revice just went with a heavier anniversary theming, and it would heavily impact people's expectations of Revice from the get-go.

I don’t think this is the one the other anon mentioned but still. In this interview Ayano and Tsuneda were asked something like “What made you aim for your current job?” and Ayano talked a little bit about Faiz. His answer begins at 15:43.

He told us that he didn’t really want to pursue acting as a career, and that he thought it was just a good way to earn some pocket money (and also that he didn’t think highly of actors). Then he mentioned his first experience with director Ishida Hidenori. It took 23 takes to shoot his first cut. He thought that it was ok as long as he delivered his lines properly but the director would say “Not good, do it over”. Ayano was frustrated because he didn’t know what he was doing wrong. He thought he was embarrassing himself in front of the adults around him. He felt as if he was in the classroom and someone came from behind and suddenly pulled his pants down, exposing everything for everyone around to see it. So he got pretty sulky and frustrated about it to the point of feeling murderous intentions (I can’t tell if he was exaggerating or not). After finishing those 23 takes the director went over to him and said something like “Those watching don’t care if this is your first time in a play. They’re watching thinking we are professionals. We feel the potential of a professional and we’re doing this together, so face it properly.” Those were simple words but that moment, those words, would stick with Ayano forever. “Ah, so there is a place where adults face things with all their might”, he thought. Because of that Ayano wanted to surprise the director, he wanted to be recognized by him.

You could say that director Ishida was Ayano’s switch. It was then, because of Ishida, at that place, for the first time, that Ayano decided he wanted to become an actor.

They talked a bit about MIU404 as well but that part was not in the video for whatever reason.

2019 was a surprising year for me.  To be more specific, 2018-2019 Kamen Rider Zi-O. Once again, i got that vibe..."Oh, a Rider that will got other Riders powers, will have amazing encounters... They promise only Heisei, but will they do like they did in Decade and bring Showa Riders too? And will be Joe Odagiri (original Kuuga) be there this time? How about Decade?  W?  Ryuki...?"

Yeah, Ryuki... 

Let me say this:  Kamen Rider Kuuga is my favorite Rider.  But not my favorite series.  It's easy to pic a favorite Kamen Rider, but for me it's hard to pick a favorite season of the franchise. I grew with Kamen Rider Black/ Kamen Rider Black RX, and God.. how i love Black and Shadow Moon both in series and manga. The story, the brothers, villains... (gotta tell that as a kid i had nightmares with one of the villains) In 2000 Kuuga became my favorite.  So many forms, a new format for the series, a never seen 100 ton Rider Kick... indeed a new hero, a new Legend. Then 2001... Kamen Rider Agito.   What a time where people debated who is strongest?   Kuuga or Agito?   Black RX?  J?

So a year got pass... 2002. And we had Kamen Rider Ryuki. For some reason, i finished Agito, watched specials, movies, etc... And did not started with Ryuki right away. So a magazine got my attention:  fans debate: polemic, Kamen Rider totaly based on a Dragon. Another in a Bat.  Series promise 13 Riders! (and we ended getting 15. We have to count Alternative and Alternative Zero.  16 if we count Kamen Rider Abyss) A Rider that it's not base on a grasshopper made fans freak out. I was: -”Really?  Fans freaking out? It's not the first time we got a Rider that isn't based on a grasshopper.  Why the polemic?” The magazine showed some nice pictures, some stats of the Kamen Riders like, power, weight, etc... but not about their alter egos. Some weeks after that, i saw and adversment about the movie Final Episode. So i got a bit surprised. Final Episode already?  It's already ending?  It's just the name of the plot of the movie?  So i did some research on the web and for my surprise, the first thing i saw was: -Kamen Rider Scissors, Massassi Sudou. Killed in a battle with Kamen Rider Knight.-  Next to that was a picture of Ren.  I tought:  "What? This guy is a murderer?  An assassin? He really killed an fellow Rider??"  (If you watched the series, i know it laughable, but innocent i was, not knowing what was waiting for me)

So i finally started to watch the series... ON EPISODE 6. Just where that fact happens. So i moved to episode 7, 8, 9 and 10. I re-watched epidose 6 to 10 again and only after that i went to episode one and started to watch the serie in a proper way. For my surprise i even got an Kamen Ryuki vs Agito, specials, movie, amazing soundtrack. I found myself getting anxious for the next episode.  So finally i reached the end of the series.  I felt sad with both endings, at same time very satisfied. I'm the kind of person who re-watches series not one, but sometimes two or three times.   But Ryuki... i re-watched one, two, three times... with friends, parents, boyfriend etc.  I guess i can say i watched Ryuki almost 20 times. 2003 arrived and we had Kamen Rider Faiz, then Blade, Hibiki... and so on. Even re-watching those Riders again, sometimes there was me, watching Ryuki again.  Or an specific episode.So it came 2009 with Kamen Rider Decade. I was happy to know that i was going to see Ryuki and cia again, but instead we got alternative versions.  Yeah, i know the original Riders were there sometimes.  And i was happy to see the original actors for Black, Blade, Agito in the movie, Momotaros ^_^...  but i was somehow in hopes to see Shinji.  But everything was ok.

-Just a confession.  During this year i was really mad. Angry!! Furious!!! With Kamen Rider: Dragon Knight.   Was Kamen Rider suffer the same thing Sentai suffers with Power Rangers???  The same thing happened in the past with Black RX as Saban's Masqued Rider.. so now, why Ryuki???-

Years passed and there we are in 2018-2019 with Kamen Rider Zi-O.  And for my surprise... BOOM!! Rider Time: Kamen Rider Ryuki. 

I was surprised and happy to see Shinji in Ryuki's arc in Zi-O. Even Editor Daisuke Ookubo from ORE Journal was there.  And do i have to mention Ryuga?  I loved how he was his own Another Rider.  This somehow made the series and the movie Final Episode canon. Not to mention returning characters. Ren, Asakura, Gorou-chan mentioning dead Kitaoka. And of course,  polemic again because of the gay scene.  I didn't cared about that, but it was priceless to see Tezuka's face when he recovered his memory.  (Was that face just because he remembered he was not a bad guy and his friendship with Shinji?  Or because he remembered he was not gay?  =D) I can't let pass the "Ron" scene happening again.  I laughed so much...

Another thing:  a lot of wiki sites, fan sites etc are describing Kamen Rider Odin's alter ego as mistery man. The guy said "Yui" before he dies... of course was Kanzaki Shiro there.  -_- Speaking of wiki sites, some said that Rider Time: Ryuki is passing DURING Ryuki's arc on Zi-O series.  That makes and don't makes sense.  I don't know. And i could go for hours talking about that.

Sad thing that some characters died again.  Some that shouldn't die, ended dying.  For my surprise, Ryuga is still alive, and kinda... accepted Shinji? 

But at the end, i got that mix of emotions again:  sadness, happyness, satisfaction.

At the end of the series, from what i understood, Zi-O re-writed the universe?  So Shinji got his powers again? Ren is alive?  Returning dead characters are dead (again)?  I don’t know.  There is still the crossover movie of Zi-O and Zero-One, so maybe some answers are coming.

The fact is, that during this year, i saw some people i follow here saying that want a Ryuki special every year.   And yeah, i want a Kamen Rider Ryuki special every year!!   Of course this wont happens, but still... do we will see something like that in the future?  Maybe yes, maybe not... some people are talking about Kamen Rider Blade cast returning for a movie or special... who knows?

One question still remains for myself:

-Is Kamen Rider Ryuki my favorite Rider series?  I still don’t know or i just don’t want to adimit?-

dream comparisons....

takumi going from “I have no dream” to “I have no dream, but I can protect them!” when he gains friends makes me :) then he finally has one at the very last scene of the show after seeing kiba lose their dream through the death and suffering of their kind,“I finally found my dream, to make everyone happy.” honestly it’s still one of my favorite hero’s journey that we got from kr, we learn about his insecurities, his growth from them and his resolve in such a satisfying way.

then we have fuwa who also says he doesn’t really have a dream, well he says “never thought of having one”, makes sense since he was driven by hatred due to his family’s death at the hands of rouge humagears, but it’s nice that he wants to find one! however, i feel this falls flatter than takumi’s reasoning, fuwa just literally never thought of having one, while it was due to takumi’s self hatred of what he is that he never had one, he was too afraid. and then we have naki, who was inside fuwa’s head, but they want a dream and decides their dream is” to protect the dreams of humagears”... on the day they find out about dreams. at least fuwa wants to help. anyways... fuwa’s dream iirc was becoming the ideal rider that yua wanted right? it’s not that bad, but i dont remember’s yua’s dream at all lmao thanks show, i care about her :/

then we have yuka who’s life was all about suffering in the hands of her real family, she literally dies due to the stress they give her and when she becomes an orphnoch she snaps and kills the entire basketball team when her bullys (including her sister) pick on her again. she never thought of having a dream as well but wants one as well (like fuwa), but i feel that her real suffering, and not fuwa’s suffering of losing his family (which turned out to be lies-), is a better explanation of the wanting to yearn for a dream. you really feel for her, she did nothing wrong and yet suffered the most, her lashing out against the humans that cause her pain (she kills scumbags) is not misplaced like how fuwa’s anger is misplaced (rouge humagears that never existed lmao) AND even when fuwa finds out his family is ok (not only ok, but literally has the same humor as him!!) he doesn’t want to go to them... even after everything is done.. why...........

anyways anyways, faiz hits me more emotionally in the “dream” department than 01

thinks about kiba and aruto’s “evil” turn parallels and how they both were guided into it by the influence of malice much to dismay of their friends (aruto has no friends but bear with me), but then remembers i dont care ‘bout aruto as hard as kiba

ok i will get into at least some of my complaints with the ending of faiz in another post but again i just have to say. even with all my criticisms. i do really love these three especially. i love their friendship and i love when they have quiet moments like this. i did like that we end on this note with the three of them, similar to how we started off the show. and i love takumi a lot, hearing him agree with keitarous mantra of wanting to make people happy even with something like laundry made me go (":

i never really thought about kamen rider forms but looking at that image is making me scream inside so im going to Rate them 

kuuga ultimate: classic. sexy. terrifying. kuuga is so good and i love how this is just a sleek and obvious upgrade to his normal forms and his evolution into the ultimate Kuuga [Warrior]. thematic and striking. 10/10.

agito shining: it’s so ugly. ive always HATED the color scheme on this. also lacks the #deep symbolism of trinity. sleek and recognizable nonetheless. 5/10.

ryuki survive: all the ryuki suits are beautiful but this one is a bit. bulky. 5/10.

faiz blaster: not as sexy as base faiz but still really nice. 7/10.

blade king: i think the pictures are ugly but i remember watching blade and really loving the suit in action. i like gold and it’s obviously a Powerup without being overwhelming. 8/10.

armed hibiki: really beautiful. i love the transformation with the disc animals. the thing about hibiki getting it in the summer to deal with the summer makamou is a nice twist for a form change in kamen rider. 10/10.

hyper kabuto: this is just base kabuto with a bit more chest. wack. 6/10.

den-o climax: i hate this as tep watching kamen rider but if it were a pripara coord i would love it so i guess i have to give it credit for that. 7/10.

kiva emperor: it looks So gaudy in pictures but like blade king i remember really liking it in action. kiva was so sexy it’s a shame that it was, kiva. 8/10.

decade complete: i know everyone hates this but i actually kinda dig it. i refuse to explain. 7/10.

double eternal: why is it so Wide. makes me uncomfortable. not as sexy as base double. 6/10. 

ooo tajador: I LOVE TAJADOR IT’S SO BEAUTIFUL. THE #IMAGERY!!!! WINGS! 10/10.

fourze meteor: so ugly but it fits with the general suit designs for fourze and what theyre going for nicely. 7/10.

wizard infinity: i hate the pictures of it but it’s so nice and sparkly in action. 8/10.

gaim kiwami: why does this picture have pineapple arms for gaim. kiwami is. eh. it’s ok. 6/10.

drive tridoron: what the fuck is this. 2/10. 

ghost mugen damashi: dont know about this one pal. it evokes no strong feelings either way. base ghost is sexier. 6/10 *.

exaid muteki: i hate this i hate this i hate this why are there dreads i dont know where to look it’s just awful all through. 0/10.

build genius: this looks like some kind of plastic game your parents buy at a garage sale and try to force you to play once before you lose all the pieces and they keep showing up all over the house for weeks and you dont remember what they came from. i dont hate it. 6/10. *

grand zio: i actually kind of like this it’s very. iwae. 7/10 *

i havent actually seen the ones marked with an asterisk (*) in action so my judgement on those is rather unfair. i actually ended up giving way more credit to my mortal enemy the Kamen Rider Franchise with this post than i was hoping to.... mr. toei destroys me once again
