Time for a refresher course

Sure! I don’t mind at all!

My family is mostly German (and Yugoslavian) and immigrated to the USA in the 1950s and helped start one of many German-American clubs that are still around today! I grew up in the club where we learned basic German, dancing, and hosted festivals and events every year like Oktoberfest and Kirchweih and Beer & Brats. I actually am still in the dance group today, it’s been 26 years since I started as a kid!

I took German all through school (only 5 years of world language were offered in my school in the states here sadly) and went to Germany in 2010 (mostly spent time in Bavaria). I also went back to Germany 2 summers ago and did a small road trip through the north from Berlin to Hamburg. I think it’s a really wonderful place and a fun language to learn and useful!

Also, when I was living in China, I found out there is a mostly German city in China (Qingdao) which is one of the biggest beer producing cities in the country!

German government Georg, who lives in the Reichstagskuppel & uses 10.000 different very long compound words each day, is an outlier adn should not have been counted.

oooh i saw some tags about what form of fencing jarlaxle would use- i’m thinking sabre, he seems to have a more slashy technique than pointy (but i’ve only ever done sabre- might be biased)

caveat: it's hard to reduce a style (especially an old one being actively reconstructed from period writing like destreza) down to a few words especially as a layperson (i focused more on joust), but in usage examples of it i've seen of the "true" version in use focus a lot on sidestepping around your working area away from blows, or interposing your weapon in a way that pushes theirs away and lets you in. so, "wait until the enemy gives you an opening", pretty much. it seems so effortless when you're watching it, but the mathematical principles that seemingly made it evolve as a counter for the italian style take quite a bit of thought and patience (especially since you will wait for an opening you can achieve a perfect victory, if possible).

here's a video of one of the more reknowned users in the us (in black) vs a similarly ranked user of the italian school that i think does a pretty good job of showing the differences between the two.

while the original versions did focus on rapier, it got adopted to saber in iirc the 1860s? after the era of history i really focus in on. here's an example of it in use using a saber based off that instructor.

when speaking on it, i was thinking of it specifically in the context that jarlaxle is depicted in dragon heist with a rapier, and warriors of waterdeep has him using the "rapier of derobement" that laeral made for him. i think with the rapier specifically it's a style that suits the character since it is very graceful and could be said to focus on outwitting and annoying your opponent until you win.

Oh man Ruki once again you have itched just the right part of my brain.

I'm working on a long-form headcanon about this, where I spit out my actual speech nerd nonsense on everyone, but I'll break it down a little here.

In short, no. Lena doesn't know ASL/BSL as it traditionally known. For those who don't know, ASL/BSL are fully-formed languages, with grammar and language rules that are unique to the language. Very similar to how English is structured differently than Spanish or German, ASL/BSL don't have the same structure as the languages they derive from (ASL grammar is actually closer to French, fun fact, because it was a French man who came up with it. I digress).

Lena knows a pidgin of sign language, which is a bit of mashing-together of language and language rules. In essence, her and Winston and any typical visitors to the isolation chamber (barring doctors, as Lena often made things as difficult as humanly possible for them at times), created their own "sign language", using typically known gestures, ASL/BSL derived signs, and mainly verbal English shorthand rules, with some ASL/BSL rules to communicate. The iso chamber was not soundproof, but Lena was borderline non-speaking for a lot of the time when she was 'fresh' from Time, anywhere from 1-3 weeks post return.

Beyond that, Lena doesn't speak much fluently. However, due to her experiences in time being so diverse, she was able to pick up enough to 'get by' essentially, surviving as a stranger in a strange land who didn't speak the language. These were basic enough phrases, enough to get her safely oriented to the area and gave her enough context to the situation. If Lena believed that she would be spending enough time there to warrant it, and it was possible, she'd attempt to find a job, where more contextual language was important. Otherwise, she'd steal her way until Time reclaimed her again. Her basic-but-passable languages include some German, French, verbal aspects of Arabic and a very, very basic framework of Portuguese. She knows these languages enough to get a job doing manual labor, where nobody would ask many questions of the newcomer who otherwise remained very quiet and withdrawn.

She was often in total-immersion situations, where she either learned the language or perished. French is likely the best-known language, as she spent 4-6 months there before being whisked off to another Timeline. But again, "best" was enough to get her a job in an ancient time with ancient attitudes. Hardly conversational now. However, learning that much of French made it easier to pick up the Latin-based languages.
