As a proud Hiyoko fan, I wanna say that trying to talk about us as a single homogenous group, as previous anon did, is just stupid. We are all very different people. Even in relation to our waifu Hiyoko... Among us there are people who ship her with Souda or Hajime and people who see her as strictly lesbian and think that shipping her with men is gross; people who think that she is a misunderstood victim (while Mikan is a manipulative predator who deliberately provokes emotionally vulnerable people into "bullying" her so everyone would feel sorry for her, Mikan; so it's Mikan who is a real abuser and Hiyoko who is a real victim) and people who do love and embrace her as a bully and a bitch; people who think of her as a wasted potential and are enthusiastic for the Unforgiven (survivor Hiyoko mod) and people who think that her death actually fits her character and the general mood of Danganronpa; people who think of her as a very serious and tragic character and wallow in dozens of angsty fanworks about her cruel controlling family and Mahiru's death and people who are in the Hiyoko fandom only for the "banana hair", "you nasty pigbarf!", "is he getting gayer with every day?", "I can never hope to understand gamers" and other funny memes. We are all very different, and trying to swipe us all in one basket is... bad. So please, don't take the previous anon seriously.

NOTE: This is in response to this previous Ask.

First off, thank you for being brave enough to reach out to someone who you know really hates your fav, lol. And being so kind about it in the process. I hope my own reaction to her, and even my uh... forthcoming (in this very response) extremely negative reaction to one specific perspective you described (we'll come back to that)... I just hope those kinds of things don't prevent you from reading/contributing in the future. I appreciate the chance to be exposed to this whole other world. At the same time, you have every right to blacklist and block my "anti-hiyoko saionji" tag. Can't remotely blame you if you do so for your own mental health.

With that out of the way, let me dig in.

I definitely appreciate that there's a wide variety of takes on the character within the fans that dig her. I would really expect that to be the case; it's why I was so skeptical in the first part of my response to that previous Ask that you're reacting/responding to. And like I said in that response, we really shouldn't all be one hive mind, even among those who agree with us. Our variances and differences in thinking are fundamental aspects of being human.

Also, I think the line is "Is it me, or is he getting gayer with age?" if I'm not mistaken... which I might be. But I freely admit that either way, it's a wonderful goddamn line. A highlight from the DR3 dub. And I believe it's exclusively in said dub, too. As someone who sees official localizations as being just as valid versions of canon as the original language publications, I appreciate small touches of character that might be sprinkled into a new translation when they're done well. This is one such time. It might be my single favorite Hiyoko moment in any version of any DR release!

Though on the flip side, I have no idea what's so delightful about repeatedly calling someone "nasty pig barf." :P

SO. With all that said, I'm sorry, but there's ONE take on the character that anon just described which I just... oh my god. YEAH. Wut. We gotta talk about it.

I just... was absolutely BOWLED OVER in shock and horror by this perspective. Legit, you knocked me on my ass by exposing me to this angle:

That is, in all seriousness, some "she was dressed slutty so she was asking for it"-level logic right there. That's legitimately what it reads as to me. Like, thinking that Mikan "deliberately provokes emotionally vulnerable people into bullying her"??? Okay, so she does this by, uh... 1) Crying a lot and apologizing profusely any time she thinks she's maybe offended someone? 2) Referencing that she's been sexually abused or treated as subhuman in the past? 3) Being covered in bandages due to unknown causes that range from "excessive clumsiness" to "self-harm" to "physical beatings"?

Nah. IMO there's no planet in the multiverse where it'd be cool to interpret any of that as "predatory" behavior. Not if you want to be viewed as a serious person and not some kind of predator-apologist clown, anyway. Nor is there any world where I believe someone can be "manipulated" into bullying someone via this sort of Mikan-esque behavior... unless, of course, that person is already inclined towards being an abuser. I mean, if it's that easy to get "manipulated" into being so vicious and cruel? Then you were just looking for an excuse.

On the flip side, if you wanted to "manipulate" ME into bullying someone? You'd have to thoroughly convince me that the target victim is a white supremacist or some shit like that. No amount of crying or injuries or references to past trauma will ever get you anything other than sympathy and empathy from me. I don't have a secret switch that flips me into an abuser once someone acts like they're 'too much' of a victim, or.... whatever the hell this is trying to imply.

In summation: No no no. That's a "fuck NO" for me. Ultimate bad take.

Knowing them, they might reduce her character to a meme or her ship with Ishi. In the worst possible universe she becomes one of those ms paint drawn moe anime girls working at mcdonalds or whatever (examples come to mind...konata osaka lain etc). But realistically I wish she'd remain dr fandom exclusive. Frogeru DO NOT go mainstream, worst mistake of your life. I keep going on tangents, im sorry. The fandom would be very divided - those who defend and love her (and Ishi) with their life and those who are stupid 😆 just kidding. She's a more watered down version of Hiyoko, she's a lot nicer to those who deserve it, but she doesn't refrain from mean remarks and behaviour towards her other classmates. She would be so damn popular in the cosplay part of the community, akin to Ibuki. I'm still very proud of her design and she looks super fun to cosplay and add personal design headcanons to. And I think she'd be one of the choices for that aesthetically pleasing type of fanart that some artists who only draw like 3 dr girls (chiaki, kaede and junko/kiri) do

I actually think her and Ishi would be a pretty popular ship, definitely their most popular (since I change the story quite a bit in their universe so that Ishi doesnt befriend you-know-who). It might be one of the "basic" ships if thats a thing (like...those who get drawn by literally everyone and are generally accepted by the community; but thats not a bad thing at all😼). They have the appropriate amount of sweetness and angst (not in between them, just the context is angsty) in canon, so they;d have lots of fans, shipping AMVs/PMVs, official art and matching merch <3

15. how does your self insert play a role in the plot of the story? do they help directly defeat the villain, support the heroes, etc.?

I FORGOT ALL THE DR LORE UNRELATED TO MY FAVES SO UH... IDK... I dont think she'd contribute much to the actual plot, but she does have her own super complex side-story, accompanied by a bunch of random characters that get mentioned by name once and appear in a background frame in that damn anime (not "the animation", but like the actual anime i never watched) but still have niche tumblr ask blogs about them. of course she'd be on the side of hope, but she's got more important stuff to care about. like taka's favourite color or how to shave her brother's hair off while he sleeps

Fav thingabout him: He is so sweet; if I had a German uncle or grandpa or something, I'dwant him to be mine. He obviously takes his work very seriously too. He(initially) seems like a very cautious, careful sort of guy...unfortunatelythis attitude does not extend to all aspects of his life.

Least favthing: He's too sweet, dammit. His naivete and trusting nature made megenuinely angry, because I couldn't believe anyone could be so stupid aboutanything when he seemed fairly smart about everything else. I don't think youhave to be "street-smart" to understand that breaking out of an enclosedcompound without permission isn't the sort of thing you'd be allowed to getaway with. I was annoyed at how he felt like a plot device at the endthere--that he just existed to force Mike to have to kill him. It's a fault ofthe writing more than the character. Everyone could see the end coming from amile away, which is (as far as I can remember) unprecedented in the series.Even things that were heavily telegraphed and seemed obvious usually carriedsome sort of unforeseen twist, i.e. everyone thinking the lantern was going tobe involved in Chuck's death, but not knowing it was going to be a suicide. Thesecond they showed Mike building up a relationship with Werner, everyone knewexactly where it was headed. Also, this is a weird pet peeve, but I hate how healways called Mike "Michael". Bro, you've been working with him formonths, you are the only one who calls him that.

Fav line:(agh, unfortunately I can't recall any because I don't have any way ofrewatching season 4 at the moment. I love that he was courteous enough totranslate into English that he felt like he was going to throw up in the bumpyvan ride.)

OTP: Werner& his unseen wife, I guess. (That phone call before his death was so sad. I hope nothing happens to her, but this is the Breaking Bad Cinematic Universe, so bad things often happen to innocent people.)

unpopularopinion: I have to admit, I don't know enough of what the popular opinions onWerner are to know what an unpopular opinion would be. I liked him, I just wishhis character arc felt less contrived and that he was treated like less of adevice. I also have seen some people in some places comparing him to Walt,which doesn't really make sense to me, because personality-wise they're justtoo far removed from each other. (Then again, people were even comparing dopeyPryce to Walter White, which was also a stretch!)

Fav thingabout him: Honestly, as a fellow cowardly, anxiety-ridden, socially maladroit, perfectionistolder child, aspects of him are extremely relatable, frightening as that may beto admit. (My younger brother is of the slacker/moocher variety, rather thanthe con man variety, though.) I don't agree with everything he does, but I understandwhy he does it. (This is actually pretty similar to my attitude towardsSkyler's actions in Breaking Bad--I don't necessarily agree with her decisions,but I mostly understand why she acts the way she does.)

Least favthing: I think he should've been willing to at least put Jimmy on some sort ofprobationary path to HHM after he landed Sandpiper. HHM was under no obligationto hire Jimmy after he passed the bar (a lot of fandom seems to feel otherwise,which makes no sense! I don't think any other firm would've wanted to hireJimmy either!) Jimmy probably would've still managed to screw something up, butat least then if Chuck wanted to officially bar him from working for HHM forgood, Jimmy would know why, and what it was that he had done to cause that. Itdoes no good to punish someone if he doesn't even understand he's beingpunished, which is what the whole issue is in the first place with Chuck goingbehind Jimmy's back and using Howard as the perpetual bearer of bad news.

Fav line:"Because if there's one thing kids love, it's local printjournalism."

brOTP: lmao Chuck is bros with nobody except his space blanket, and his ol'sipping-scotch-and-chortling companion Howard, before that relationship gotdestroyed...

OTP: ...althoughI must also confess a SHAMEFUL desire to ship Chuck/Howard, because it's gotsuch a messed up power dynamic, because they've known each other for at least18 years, because Howard's clearly still so much in awe of Chuck (which Chuckprobably enjoys), and because neither of them seems to have any other friendsor close relationships. (Are we ever going to learn what's up with Howard'swedding ring? Even my mom thinks Howard is gay at this point! And what's upwith papa Hamlin? Did he die? Retire?) Canon-wise, I'm actually really curiousabout Chuck & Rebecca's relationship, because I have to wonder what it washe did that caused her to divorce him, but not bear any particular grudge oranimus towards him afterwards. He was clearly really upset about the divorce,but doesn't bear any ill-will towards her either. She doesn't appear to enteredinto any new relationship after the divorce either. It's all very mysterious.

nOTP: I can'ttell if this person was serious or not, but I swear I remember seeing someonepropose some theory that Kim had fucked Chuck at some point, and that's gonnaget a BIG NO from me.

randomheadcanon: oh god I've got like five hundred of them at this point. Themassive infodump that was Chuck's obituary in the season 4 premiere contributedto a lot of them, I think. I imagine Chuck's freshman year of college, at age14, was absolute hell for him. He was so proud to get accepted to an Ivy Leagueschool, but had been upset it wasn't a more prestigious one, like Harvard,Yale, or Princeton. (He had applied to them and had a few interviews, but unbeknownstto him, he had been heavily penalized in their byzantine admissions proceduresbecause, despite his sterling academic record, they didn’t find him outgoing or athleticenough.) His parents put him on the train to Philadelphia by himself, with afew suitcases, a map, and $50. He had no problems getting to the university,but was pretty overwhelmed right off the bat by the fact that everyone else wasolder and wealthier than him; he had dealt with this to some extent in high school, butnot to this degree (I headcanon his fictional alma mater, Francis Xavier HighSchool, as a typical Jesuit all-boys preparatory school that draws heavily fromupper-middle-class suburban families). Here he was, a literal child, thrustinto the adult world, and the world of the elites, at that. He had hisfirst-ever panic attack sometime during his first semester, and wound up at thecampus doctor's office because he had convinced himself he was having a heart attack.On being told he was physically fine, he was indignant, but all the same, henever told his family about the incident, or anyone else either. Somewherearound this time, he also gets a letter from his parents, telling him he'sgoing to be a big brother in a few months, and won't this be exciting for him?(He wants to tell them his life is too exciting for him as it is, but saysnothing, instead writing back that he is sure having a younger sibling to helplook after will be the greatest experience of his life. He almost convinceshimself that he means it.)

unpopularopinion: I DON'T HATE CHUCK. (The most unpopular opinion of all!) He's myfavorite character on the show, with the obvious disclaimer that saying acharacter is my favorite doesn't mean I approve of all the character's actions,etc. Also, I know he's just a fictional character, but I'm still pissed offabout people celebrating that he killed himself & saying they hope it waspainful & stuff like that. Like, how much of an asshole do you have to be?What a horrible thing to say.

Low-key otp: hmmm considering I'm pretty new to this i’m not sure- I can see some Lee ships slipping in, in the future- Gaara or Naruto tbh- ermmm...low-key ino and sakura at the moment, also Calmly on board with Jiraiya and tsunade/ Shikamaru And temari but I'm sure the ‘calm’ element won't last very long anyways, OOooOO AND KURENEI AND ASUMA

High-key notp: I honestly don't understand how it's so popular but sasuke and sakura- no chemistry there at all in my opinion, especially with Sasuke (👀) and I see them more as siblings or friends to be honest, I'm not gonna like where the series ends on this note 😂

So on an opinion based note sure, also with the master as I feel their relationship doesn't deserve to be simplified in that sense if that she fair to say? But yeah~

And River is a complicated one I think, I mean I'm conflicted on her anyway, to summarise I think her best self was when we first meet her with ten- but the depth we are inferred to see in their relationship is not equal to what we see in their interactions..so I don't ship it...👀

(Softly) notp: I feel like my minds went blank. It's not an element of the show I focus on an awful lot. Mickey and Rose? I guess that seems like a thing some people must ship right? I mean as much as I love Rose, he deserves better and at least he got Martha in the end, would be nice to see some development on that though. Again, I feel like I must be completely overlooking some people. And Donna doesn't really come into the mix here, I'm indifferent a sense long as she's having a good time- Wow Donna. Jack and the doctor? Is that a highkey thing? Is that a stupid question? Cause I guess I don't but it's just them isn't it, there's so many aspects to it and the nine and jack kiss is a nice little important contribution without any further connotations- Side note: without going Off on one about Torchwood and janto- and how jack and Ianto utterly own my heart- I wouldn't say no to shipping jack with others at all, I mean he has a long life, just want the big old head to be happy, right?

High-key otp everybody here knows: like this would be so so much easier if we counted the extended universe for obvious reasons- but even in general the doctor who ships i’m high key about are lacking. Probably narrow down it down to vastra and Jenny whom are amazing in every way and I hope they are having a nice time drinking tea and eating biscuits rn- but apart from them I think I'm gonna have to revert back to Clara and Danny. Cause I think these two ships are the only ones that I actively ship and support that isn't just in passing.
