posting abt it here too.... its been a while since ive gotten rly invested in a new webtoon but im rly enjoying this one...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I just clicked on it bc the art style looked cute... and it IS but I didn't expect to actually get so invested 😭😭 It's an adaptation of a webnovel, and it's a twist on the fantasy romance novel isekai genre!! I have no interest in normal romance novel isekai stories tbh, theyre just so boring to me... the only novel isekai I've enjoyed so far have been subversions of the genre... orv, surviving romance,,, so what im saying is im enjoying this bc its also a subversion-!! (So far it doesnt seem to be a romance at all, and the guy being isekai'd hasnt even read the book so it's interesting bc he has to do like detective work to figure out whats going on... ) Here's the synopsis:
Tumblr media
There's not many chapters of the webtoon out but I'm already liking it a lot😭😭 I actually couldnt wait so I found a translation of the webnovel and I started reading it too... It goes into more detail than the webtoon and I can't wait to read more aaah😭😭 Making this post in the hopes of getting someone else to read it with me bc i feel insane rn dkfbndnd
edit: I also want to give ppl a heads up abt a p major translation error in the EN webtoon: The "emperor" is actually a female empress; just mentally correct "his majesty" to "her majesty" in your head when u read😭
edit2: they did it again... The ruler of the Divine Kingdom is also a woman, and was mis tl as male 😭😭 just keep in mind that the rulers of BOTH the major countries (the riester empire and the divine kingdom) are both women!!! Wonder when the webtoon tl will ever fix it...

Let me preface this: I'm an architecture major
I used to be a big LO fan but obviously fell out of love of it like a lot of us did, and I know LO uses SketchUp for backgrounds. That is not an issue I have with the comic or any comic, I want artists to have an easier time in any way they can. I was always under the impression Rachel imported the models into Photoshop and drew over them like you can see in the early episodes with the sketchy lines. Well, school just started recently for me and I now have access to SketchUp for my coursework, and I made a few discoveries: 1. Photoshop cannot read SketchUp files, and while you can import them into Clip Studio through some configuring, they can be finicky and will lose parts in the importing process, so they are best used into the original SketchUp program to export as PNGs. 2. Many of the models Rachel uses are incredibly easy to find, especially if you put "modern", "luxury", or "classy" before the main part of the search. Many of the houses and rooms for example are first page results. 3. The biggest discovery: You know how we all assumed Rachel was hand-drawing all the lines over the SketchUp models and how she gave up the longer LO went on? Well, it's actually worse. It turns out SketchUp has a thing called "Styles" in it, which means you can mess with the lines and look of the model, such as making it look more like a blueprint or playing with the colors. Well, they have a lot of styles on SketchUp known as "sketchy lines", which are the exact ones Rachel used early in the comic to fit with her style, and it takes a literal click of a button to do. All she would do is pose the model, click the sketchy line style, and export the PNG. That's it. So, yeah, Rachel is so checked out of the comic that she can't even bother to click a single button to make the models fit into the comic's style anymore. Use that information however you like.
Ouhhh sorry OP, I'm about to like, undo all the work you just put into that ask. We've already known about the 3D background problem for a long while now.
First off, it's more likely LO doesn't use SketchUp but actually Acon3D, which is a website that offers 3D models both for free and at cost, which are actually compatible with software like Clip Studio. As soon as you open it up you'll likely see a lot of very familiar backgrounds that are often used in romances, isekais, and period pieces. It's literally the go-to spot for Webtoon Originals creators. Like, to the point that I wouldn't be surprised if Naver was partnered with them because of how many of their creators use it.
Second, there's plenty of up-to-date evidence to support the fact that Rachel doesn't exclusively stick to one software, sometimes she's drawing in Photoshop, sometimes she's drawing in Clip Studio Paint, sometimes she's drawing in Procreate. She's undoubtedly using Clip Studio for her paneling, speech bubbles, and backgrounds, as there are built in tools to utilize and convert 3D materials into lineart, among other features that are recognizable as coming from CSP because they're not available in PS or Procreate.
Third, yes, she just uses filters to turn her backgrounds into lineart, this has been apparent since S1. The only backgrounds she's ever 'hand drawn' were the ones involving lots of nature and even those are mostly just Photoshop brushes stamped on.
Tumblr media
Like I realize I'm probably bursting your bubble here and I apologize for that lmao but these buildings were never hand-drawn, this is not new information ( ̄﹏ ̄;) I appreciate you mentioning your own experiences with it as you're learning it though, I find once you start to learn the process yourself you really start to notice what others are doing. Even I've gone through that over the past couple years as I started to use 3D models and more advanced tools specifically for drawing webtoons.
I will mention btw, there's nothing wrong with using 3D models for your character drawing and backgrounds. The only time it tends to get frustrating is when you're reading a comic that isn't making any attempts to blend the background in with the art style.
Like, The Kiss Bet probably uses 3D models to help with perspective and laying out scenes quickly without second-guessing, but you can tell they still hand-draw over the models because they look natural and like they belong to the comic's stylization. The characters don't look out of place sitting in a living room and the living room doesn't look distracting.
Tumblr media
But then you get stuff like Lore Olympus, Let's Play, and Midnight Poppy Land, and it becomes a bit more obvious they're not giving a shit about backgrounds lmao
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I get it, WT's deadlines are cutthroat as fuck, but if it's getting to the point that you have an entire team behind you and you're literally just copy pasting video game models from Phantom Hourglass, then it's probably time to re-focus your priorities a bit. There are comics with as few as 1-2 assistants (and even in some cases no assistants at all!!) pulling off backgrounds better than this, even when they're taking shortcuts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Nevermore and City of Blank)
But a lot of that does come down to how WT manages its expectations as well as support for their creators. The deadlines and requirements WT puts their creators under are insane and awful in the long-term, and they're not acting with the amount of professionalism they ought to be for a platform that's trying to breakout as a major publisher here in the West. I feel like it comes down to WT loosening the choke chain around their creators, but also creating a standardized level of quality to ensure it's not suffering for the sake of quantity. The traditional literature industry has real editors and stages of quality control for a reason, whereas WT is more interested in just throwing as many series at the wall and dumping all their stock into the ones that stick.

1. I love this, the OI vibes are so strong and dam I've wanted to play a OI game for two years now.
2. Helene's Rashta vibes are strong, but I actually feel like Yuri from Accomplishments of the Duke's Daughter crossed with fake saintess, I love it. She's gotta have a sob story as bad as Rashta's for me to sympathise, however.
3. Poor, poor MC. I am going to smack that fiancé and give MC the life they deserve.
4. Poor, poor me. How am I supposed to choose between my two favourite tropes!! Aahh, and just when polyamory isn't an option ;_;
Hello Anon!
Hmm I don't think I'm familiar with what 'OI' is? Or maybe I am but I just don't recognize the acronym 😅 if anyone knows what 'OI' stands for, please don't hesitate to put it in the replies 😊 Never mind I found the answer (on Reddit, of all places 🤣) Yeah, a lot of otome isekai and villainess webtoons served as inspiration for ATE so I'm not surprised that the OI vibes are strong with this one hahaha
Oh I haven't heard of the Accomplishments of the Duke's Daughter, but it seems interesting! I'll add it to my reading list and check it out when I have the time 😊 Hmm, the Fake Saintess one you mentioned ... is that the one with the 3 yandere MLs? If it is, I think I've read the first few chapters but I haven't read it in a while 😅
I may or may not have plans to provide an option to smack Ædan somewhere along Ædric's route 🤭
🤣 same Anon same, it's why I have been think about a v-poly route (where MC is the hinge), but I would have to add it in after the individual routes if I ever do get around to writing it since that would be like an entirely different third book 😅

hi! i know that i'm fated to read your every work despite not knowing the media half the time. this time i would like to finally be one step ahead. so uhh. where do i read orv? do i go for the webtoon or the novel? to clarify, i did try to search, but got confused by reddit. also i am going to watch trigun. i've been eyeing animorphs too but the 54 (?) books are making me go hmm. thank you for existing you're pretty great. you're like the spiderman of writing but instead you got asbestos rat'd.
THIS ASK IS INSANE. WE'RE REFERENCING MY LORE NOW?
But thank you, you're insane. People ask why I have stupid high standards for the fics i post on AO3 and it is because there are people like you who will just read whatever regardless of whether or not it's good. I have a responsibility.
This ask also made me wonder if I have good taste. Because every time somebody says this my first reaction is "oh god and the source materials aren't even good". I read a lot of trashy stuff (but, like, define trashy), and I consume too many bad things to be able to say I have discerning taste. If I enjoy something I almost never call it bad, because things were made to be enjoyed and I enjoyed them then they had value in at least one aspect. If you were to ask me if my favorite TV show of all time the Incredible Hulk 1974 was actually, unironically, good, then I'd break into a cold sweat. Is somebody bad because it's camp? Is something bad only if it's unintentional camp?
Regardless, I never write fic for something that isn't only like 80% good - there's a sweet spot of 'good enough for me to obsess over' and 'bad enough that I'm rewriting it in my head'. It's rare I write for anything I find completely good. Which is why I feel bad when people say that they're reading this thing I'm writing fic for jalksdf there's better things out there I SWEAR.
ORV is in the sweet spot of "this isn't high literature" and "this has given me brain worms". Definitely for sure start with the webtoon - the webnovel is clunkily translated, you don't read it for the writing at all, and it is also a literal million words. Don't read the webnovel unless you're like "I'm going insane and I need more of this". It starts off kind of slow ("This is a well executed very banal isekai") and you're like a frog in the pot of it slowly going more insane until you're a ways in and you are in a tangle of ridiculously complicated gambits and convoluted storytelling. There is literally no other way to describe it than the Homestuck of webnovels. If you're completely unfamiliar with isekai that's fine, but as a warning - ORV being your first webtoon/webnovel isekai is like your first shoujo manga being Ouran High Schol Host Club, or your first magical girl show being Madoka, or your first mecha anime to be Neon Genesis Evangelion. It's one of the best works in its genre but it's supposed to be viewed in context of the genre. Or maybe it's more like if Homura starred in Evangelion, which was Ouran. I'm just saying words.
Animorphs is kind of like Mother 3 in which everybody who has ever read/played it said that it changed them as a person, it changed their relationship with media and storytelling forever, if you read/play it you will be born again from the world's egg, etc. Works that genuinely become part of your personality. I also never recommend it to people because it is incredibly hit or miss. I remember using a spreadsheet of just "what books are skippable or not" because some of them are incredibly weird and some of them are incredibly weird in the bad way. The only Animorphs fic I've ever written is from 2019 so it's also not that great. Each book only takes an hour to read and the pdfs are free online, so it's incredibly accessible in terms of the reading experience, but it's kinda the Animorphs gestalt that changes you forever and not the individual books. I try not to recommend stuff that's like 25% bad.
Watch Trigun if you like what Trigun is - it's not going to deliver on something it's not. Also watch 98 first. Watch Stampede/read Trimax if you want more Trigun. The Trigun fic is based off Stampede but refer to my "I only write fic for smth that's 80% good and not 100% good" statement.
Also I think being bit by an asbestos rat just means that I probably have mold and drywall in my lungs, which would explain a lot about this blog. Thanks for the ask I love it.
#you have to feel kind of guilty saying “this is the homestuck of webnovels” and reccomending it with a straight face#and like i wouldn't outright reccomend it#it has plenty of problems. but also you dont care about the problems much ya know.#my asks#my writing#it is genuinely so funny that Animorphs and M3 girlies are Like That#sir this is a children's novel where a teenager vomits crocodiles#and it's not as good when you just hear people describe it like “oh read animorphs its sooo fucked up and edgy and people die”#like. yes its good because its fucked up. but also#the humor and levity and silliness is important and makes the fuckery meaningful#i think mostly it's the fact that animorphs will present to you some very shallow stuff and then ask you to engage with it like its real#its not realism or grittiness or edge#it just presents you with Very Basic Children's SciFi and goes#these are real children. all life is real sentient life.#yes the CIA really did do that.#when the enemy is killed the enemy is dead. do you understand.#thats what makes it a rly good childrens novel but also what makes it so disturbing as an adult#whose been asked to fictionalize suffering countless times in scifi#and on the tv. and in the news. and from each other.#and when we're presented with normal fictional suffering and the narrative is like No - Look At This#it changes how you engage with scifi and media in general#there's a lot of 'Jake' characters out there. but you can't look at them the same way.#did not expect the tag essay to be about animorphs this time.

Reading The Greatest Estate Developer!
If you have not read this webtoon (and aren't opposed to webtoons or isekai for whatever reasons), I HIGHLY recommend The Greatest Estate Developer! It's a transmigration story which is where the protagonist is isekai'd into media they consumed (in this case, a book) usually as a character from it. There are a lot of fun archetype subversions, surprisingly tender moments, surprisingly un-tender moments, and all kinds of wild expressions that I've been so captivated to read. If you're looking for a fresh and fun isekai, I've definitely been enjoying this one.

DID YOU SAY THAT YOU READ WEBTOONS? What uh.... What are your favorites? 👉👈 I'm still trying to wean off reading manga, and the only webtoons I've read are Queen Cecia Wears Knickerbockers and Wayne Family Adventures 😂
Yes, I have read quite a few Webtoons in my day (Why do I sound so old right now?) I have not heard about the Queen Cecia Webtoon, but Wayne Family Adventures is a very good choice, in my totally unbiased opinion. 🤣
If you want more DC Webtoons, then there is Red Hood: Outlaws and there is Zatanna & The Ripper. I haven't caught up with either of them, but if you do love those characters or want to see more from them, I definitely commend checking those out. There was also the Vixen: NYC Webtoon, but unfortunately that one seems to be cancelled now. 🥺
If you're interested in completed Webtoons, then I have a few offerings. I love Siren's Lament, it's a wonderfully complicated Webtoon even if it does hurt my heart sometimes. Gourmet Hound is more of a slice of life with some drama for added effect, but I really did adore that Webtoon that the art was just so cute!! Flow has some incredible worldbuilding mechanics and it's just so tasty. If you want more hero Webtoons, then there's I Don't Want This Kind of Hero, although that one does contain some distressing themes at times so like... beware. And then there is one of my ultimate favorites, which is called Gepetto, which is inspired and based on the Pinocchio tale but more futuristic and dystopian, if that's your fancy.
As for ongoing Webtoons, there's Marry My Husband, which is one of those time travel Webtoons where the MC dies and comes back to life sometime in the past and tries to fix their future. The main story is done, but they do have side stories which have been super cute to read.
There's the ever famous The Remarried Empress, and you'll probably see a lot of references to characters from this Webtoon if you read other Webtoons with a similar premise of- arranged marriage, terrible consort, attractive male lead that is decidedly not the husband, but don't worry he will be.
There is a newer Webtoon called I am the Villain, which is part of the Isekai genre, I would say. It's a beautiful Webtoon, the art is just stunning, and I have no idea what's going on but I'm having a great time.
For more action-based Webtoons, there is Eleceed and if anything happened to my boy Jiwoo I will kill everyone in this room and then myself. And apparently I've done a poor job of that promise because this boy has gone through it, but he still a sweetheart and I love him for that.
There's also the Omniscient Reader, which was actually originally a webnovel called Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint, but has since been turned into a manhwa and it's so long but it's so good. I love my sunfish man and ugly squid king (bonus points to anyone who knows that reference).
Here is a Webtoon I have complicated feelings about: Tower of God. This was actually the first ever piece of media I published fanfiction for. It's this really incredible, complex, mind-bending fantasy Webtoon. It is very long, it currently stands at 581 chapters and counting. Unfortunately, the fandom ruined the experience for me, and I pretty much quit all of my fics and that's how I found myself here in the DPxDC fandom! There is an anime for it, currently just Season 1 is out but fingers crossed on Season 2! 🤞But definitely read it first before you watch because the pacing is a little fast for the anime and you don't get that same sweet, sweet tension. I am lucky enough that I do still have one beloved friend that I can talk about Tower of God with, or else I think I probably wouldn't have put it on this list at all.
Eleceed, Omniscient Reader, and Tower of God are all manhwas, which are Korean manga for a shorthand explanation. So if you want to wean yourself off those forms of fiction then... maybe stay away from these because they can suck you in.
Speaking of beloved friend, @midnightenigma recommended to me the Like Wind on a Dry Branch Webtoon, and I am still so upset about it because I will never be the same. 😭 The worldbuilding for this Webtoon is amazing and I adore the slow building romance and plot, and the exploration of grief and just- I am not okay.
I have more things I could recommend but that's... probably as much as I should offer now. lol I hope you find a treat to read from the bunch, though!

Please, Let Me Return Home (Webcomic)
Created by: Hwa-yeon-jae
Genre: Isekai
Vacation time is the perfect time for reading isekai stories, so I have another one I found. This one's premise is a bit different since unlike a lot of isekais, the main character actually does want to go home, and to make things harder, she has no idea what story she isekaied into. As of writing this, there are 37 chapters out, and the translations wane from either really good to weirdly awkwardly worded. I actually found this webtoon through this youtube short here.
The story is about Estelle, a knight who died by the hands of her trusted right hand man and reincarnated into the body of an aristocrat girl named Lucifia. Upon reincarnation, she realizes that the side she used to fight on has lost and that she is wed to a man named Zedekiah Heint, an adversary. Her body is now weaker and no longer in the shape that it used to be. She tries to find some of the knights she used to fight along side (by trading places with her maid and buying a knife), but ends up fighting a serial killer that was on the loose in the capital. She's able to defend herself and the killer gets caught. She goes to a ball later with Heint, where rumors of her jumping off of the building get spread around greatly. While she's able to defend off the rumors, she recalls the event of Lucifia jumping off of the building, supposedly to claim her love for the crown prince despite him seeming to not care about her, and as a result she ends up kicking the crown prince in the dick when he tries to go down on her. She realizes that the man who killed her, Khalid is still alive and swears to seek revenge. She eventually gains a memory from her past of how her mother died and how her father almost committed suicide because of it. To prevent rumors from spreading about her attempted suicide, she meets up with a trading deal to set things straight. However, things turn to the worst when the traders attempt to kidnap her, forcing her to run into the forest where a monster resides. Here, Khalid is able to save her, and nearly dies. Estelle nearly leaves him to die, but knows that if he dies here he will be regarded as a hero, so she saves him. Luckily, Heint is able to save both of them and nurse them both back to health (much to Estelle's dismay). Lady Loer (the one Estelle thinks is the one spreading rumors) invites Estelle to a tea party, however, things turn to the worst when Khalid interrupts and talks down about Estelle on the battlefield, specifically about how she was a female knight and couldn't even defend her country. Heint ends up defending her and the teaparty ends. The last couple of chapters talks about Lady Loer and how despite how it seems, she is trying to help Estelle, as she really admired Lucifia and wants to help her.
Surprisingly, this is one of the few isekai I've seen where the MC tries to get back to real life, since most of the time the MCs just accept their fate while being stuck in this world. I actually do like the MC's design before she gets isekaied into Beatrice and I wish that her quirk of making scary faces when she's happy was integrated more into the story (it only shows up once after she's been isekaied, which is a shame because I think it would be a really funny character quirk). She also blushes A LOT for an MC, which I don't particularly understand. I do think it's kind of interesting to have her not know the story she's been isekaied into since she's read so many different romance books only to find out that it's partially from her own story of tragedy. Her character as Beatrice is okay, I guess, she doesn't particularly stand out to me much as an MC.
Ellin is a pretty cute male lead, and he has a sad backstory to boot. I actually really do like his backstory though. It's pretty cute seeing a shaggy child Ellin learn how to trust with a guard who is sort of incompetent. I think that him and Beatrice's relationship is actually pretty cute, though it's too bad it seems that the empress seems to be very possessive and possibly even yandere for Ellin, considering he tells him to throw away earrings that Beatrice got for him. I wonder what the empress's relationship with Daniel is as well, since they both seem to have a similar motivation of keeping the one they love close to their heart.
The yandere in question is Cha Yejun's doppelganger, Daniel. It's a bit hard to tell if he's a yandere since the translations are kind of rough, but from what I can tell, he kills the assassin in an attempt to get rid of both Ellin and protect Beatrice, and even ends up drugging Beatrice out of jealousy and to prevent her from testifying in court. With the way he's aware that he's in a story, it makes me wonder if Daniel is actually Cha Yejun isekaied into the story, and that maybe he had this kind of personality this entire time. We don't know that much about Cha Yejun other than he was a popular student that was close to the MC, though it does seem strange that the two would suddenly be friends since there's not really any explanation to how or why they met. This could also not be the case since we see that when the MC was isekaied, the smoke that she sees in the mirror is identical to the one that Daniel is able to make. It also wouldn't necessarily make sense that Cha Yejun would be Daniel since if the story she's in is actually something she wrote in third grade, then there's no way for him to have read or known about it unless the two knew each other back then (or he had somehow read it). It does bring up questions on how Daniel knows that Ellin is actually an extra (as it were) or if he's just really arrogant and believes that he's the center of attention. I'm not sure why exactly he's interested in Beatrice in the first place- it might have something to do with his lineage and how important the marriage is, but he does seem jealous over her when she hangs out with Ellin.
Anyways, I wish this story had a better translation since it can be a bit annoying reading through it, but I did have a fun time reading the story since it does present some concepts I don't normally see.

Hello Mari, I'm not here to ask about something about wmmap but rather about another issue that has been bothering me in particular...
It's about female characters in abusive relationships.
So, I guess you already know that there are quite a few manhwas where the female lead ends up in a relationship with a very abusive male character and everyone hates him for that, right? Well that's not exactly my problem, no one likes to read couples that romanticize abuse, I understand why people hate it, I do it too, especially the male lead. My problem comes with the hatred of the female lead.
Okay, hate the relationship, I hate the guy for being a jerk but I don't like that they hate the female leads for staying with them. Many of these protagonists always have stories where they suffered abuse as children because the father hated them or the family ignored them, etc. At least to me it makes sense that a person who grew up this way can't fully distinguish what is healthy love from one that is not. If all you knew in your life was abuse, then why would you view abuse from your partner negatively?
And with this I do not intend to justify the couple, that it is okay for them to be together and that they should be together, of course not. I am completely against that.
My point is to stop hating fl for choosing the abusive ml!! I feel like that is like blaming the victim, if in a relationship the man is the abusive one and she still decides to stay with him it is still not his fault! Instead of hating the fl by calling it "stupid" or "annoying" they should try to understand the protagonist and hate the author for creating something like that.
I know that many of these stories are not for the purpose of showing an abusive relationship but rather they really sell it as if it were the best love story of all, but if we are able to use our criteria to know that the relationship is wrong then we should be able to understand that it is not the fl's fault for continuing to love her abuser.
I have thought about this for a long time but it resurfaced in me when this new webtoon came out called Beg or better yet, Cry. I have seen many criticize and hate the protagonist, Layla, for staying with Matthias but the girl suffered a lot of abuse, it is not her fault for not knowing what a healthy relationship is, and the guy did everything possible to abuse her.
I come to you because you really are the most reasonable in the entire manhwa community that I have found, those on Twitter are a bit weird (and in fact i saw these types of comments from them) I want to know if I am really the only one who thinks like this and I am overthinking it or not?
(Sorry for the late reply, I've been busy!)
I'm probably going to say something that will get some people mad, but manhwa readers aren't particularly progressive/feminist. Yes, even if most readers are young women and even if they claim to be feminists. So you have situations like the one you just described (I haven't read/seen the manhwa you are specifically referencing, but I definitely believe people would hate a FL based on those reasons), people hating on a FL for not choosing the ML they like, etc. I remember some people were even angry at Athy when she said she wasn't thinking about marriage yet (she is 15-6), because she didn't choose Ijekiel, and also because she didn't kiss Lucas. This misogynistic behavior is also pretty easy to spot just by paying attention to how readers treat any female character that's not the FL (I swear, as soon as a female character is introduced you'll have people commenting "She better not be a bitch" or something along those lines). Stanning the FL means nothing if you think she is the only good female character, or if the only female characters you like are the ones that are subservient to her.
But to be fair, otome isekai manhwa itself is not a particularly progressive genre either, so maybe it makes sense that it attracts readers like that. Of course, there are exceptions, but in general, the most a manhwa will do is portray the FL as a swallow caricature of a "girlboss". MLs are allowed to have plenty of flaws, but the moment a FL doesn't follow that (honestly, very boring) archetype, has ugly flaws, or dares to go against the ML's wishes, a lot of fans will hate her.
My theory is that the manhwa fandom has the worst of both the kpop and anime fandoms, so that's why this happens.

Latest Writing Blog Post is Live: March 2024
Kept me about two weeks to write the darn thing, but my "March" blog update is officially live. Here's hoping you have a beverage, some food, and you're comfortable, because this one is a doozy!
Wait. I Wrote Something?!?
Est. Read Time: 65min! 🤯
What could I POSSIBLY talk about for an HOUR'S worth of reading!?
Well, for one, I ACTUALLY WROTE SOME NARRATIVE PROSE! First time in, like, 10 months!
All thanks to getting back into reading, via Comikey and Webtoon.
I take up a LOOOOOT of time recapping the MULTITUDE of isekai manhwas I started reading in March.
I recap 5 different Webtoon Originals, 1 Webtoon Canvas, and 1 manga I'm reading on Comikey.
It's a LOT, but I hope it gets you as excited as I am about these stories. (Does include spoilers for the start of each of the recapped stories)
Finally, I of course talk about the actual writing I've been working on. I'm super excited to keep going and maybe actually have a nice handful of new stories for you fine folks throughout this year! 😁

Amazing.
just! I LOVE IT SO MUCH
like this is the type of thing I've been Craving. I admit i have a fondness for the isekai type set up you typically see in webtoons and manwha, and i love to indulge myself in the cliche ones that have heart, but sometimes i get. so tired of them.
i love world building! i love seeing beautiful art! i love the protagonist coming into their and their personality!
However, as time has gone on, my tolerance for one specific trope has weakened and weakened, until now it's gone to a point where I almost immediately stop reading when I sense it. It's hard to describe, but it's where like,,, it feels that the other female characters are only being used to prop the protagonist as the 'most special', you know? and the story does this by demeaning the other female characters (of which there are like. two other female characters, or something,)
An example of this that I see the most (and which usually gets me to run in the other direction) is where the original heroine of the light novel gets 'bashed' in some way, and turns out to be evil. And sure, it can be written well! but it happens every. time.
and it's like! It really gets on my nerves because everything the original heroine does will be immediately nitpicked, most of all by the readers/audience.
She engages in pleasant conversation with the protagonist? Clearly she's absolutely fake. She keeps to herself and barely glances at anybody? How standoffish. She's outgoing and enthusiastic when talking to people? Nobody's taught her any manners. She obliviously chats away in an awkward situation? Wow, she can't read a room at all. She runs away from a clearly dangerous situation? Filthy coward. She helps somebody who turns out to be dangerous? Naive and an idiot. She smiles? She's a snake. She's too dumb to live. She's plotting something. She's selfish. She's vain, too focused on her looks.
What makes it even more infuriating is when I have seen OUR protagonist have the same behavior as the OG heroine, and nobody made a peep! When people only hate it because they see in other characters, and not our protag. Or when there’s a sharp contrast between the traits of the OG heroine and isekai protagonist. Like ooo, our isekai protag is cunning and smart, unlike OG heroine over there who’s naive and gullible and too trusting.
(meanwhile, if protag did the exact same thing as the OG heroine, protag would be called kind and compassionate)
Some of the time, the comic signals you to ‘hate’ this OG heroine character over these little, little things. Like, for example, the POV character thinking ‘Can’t you read a room?’ in a situation where the original heroine is just trying to like. Talk to people, and there’s an awkward atmosphere for Reasons. (Which, by the way, I have a special disdain for this reason for ‘hating’ a character. Social cues are hard, man, and in these cases a lot of the time the heroine wasn’t even trying to be insensitive.)
But other times, there isn’t ANY prompting from the comic to hate her, and the audience spouts all of these things off anyways! She breathes and people look at her like she’s a threat. And yeah, I understand it’s partly due to readers being genre savvy and knowing that authors really like to make OG heroines evil/unlikeable, but it puts a bad taste in my mouth when people start bashing/hating a character who’s been in the comic for one (1) episode because she’s… There. Existing. Being the OG heroine.
and you know what? i think i know why this happens. i think it's because, due to her position as the Original Female Lead in the light novel, the author/audience feels like the OG heroine jeopardizes the position our isekai protagonist has in the story. Therefore, we have to beat her down in some way. We have to make so there’s never a chance that the love interests could love her. It’s not just that she has flaws, she has flaws that our isekai protagonist doesn’t have. She doesn’t have to be evil, she just has to be of ‘lesser worth’ than our protagonist. From the second an OG heroine steps into the story, she has to be constantly compared to our isekai protagonist in a kind of romance boxing match. And I just kinda. Hate that???? Hate that she’s automatically perceived as a ‘threat’ for existing?? for being a Girl??? for being somebody that the male protagonist could love??
Sometimes when I read the comments on a webtoon it’s like, god forbid women do anything. Literally.
And because we’re critiquing her so that she never threatens the protagonist’s position for Top Female Love Interest, whenever she does literally anything else, people will always be poised to hate on it. She will always be defined by the threat she has to the romance, and to the protagonist, and I HATE IT. Because why do women have to see each other as a threat? Why do they have to be defined by romance? Why does the audience always see women as a threat? If the OG heroine was so great a protagonist in the OG light novel, why can’t she stay that character? Why does she need to be reduced and cut down in order for the isekai protagonist to be cool and awesome?? There isn’t a finite supply of cool and awesome women juice! You can have two female characters be cool and awesome (in different and similar ways) and have other characters fall in love with them!
(As an aside, the character traits they pick to purposely make the OG heroine ‘unlikeable’ get on my nerves too. Sometimes they do a good job of it, other times it seems they just put the bare minimum into making OG heroine display an unlikeable trait before stopping. And then sometimes, the trait isn’t really hateable at all! I already said the whole thing about ‘reading the room’ earlier, which is a trait I can relate to, but aside from that… Like, she’s kinda ditzy? Not the smartest crayon in the box? So what?? Is she hurting anyone?? You’re gonna have to sell me more if you want me to decide she’s a ‘lost cause’!)
(Also, I realize ranting about the vilification of OG heroines when talking about SR is kinda funny, but honestly I'm not upset at all about OG chaerin eun because yeah, honestly, i'd go evil too if I had to deal with my life being a story. In addition... she's just fun to have as a villain hfasiucd. There's caveats to everything)
Going back to my initial statement for the trope of ‘disliking when women characters are used specifically to prop the protag up, because no one else is as great as her’, this extends even to ‘hopelessly devoted’ types of characters. Female characters who love the protagonist. These best friend types of female characters are allowed to be kind and skilled and pretty. But, you know, not as much as the protag. Never as much as the protag. We only really see them when the protagonist needs help. This is where a lot of maids and servants-type characters fall into, but don’t get me wrong! I love a lot of characters who fall into this archetype. I think it’s when it only either this or the hateable female characters that it strikes me as off. What I think strikes me as off about this ‘best friend’ archetype is that it’s defined by feeling a bit… uneven? Like the ‘hopelessly devote’ type of female characters feel like the isekai protagonist is almost ‘too good’ to be in the presence of them, if that makes sense. But, once again, I know I’ve found myself loving these type of characters before. Looking back, I’ve concluded there’s only one thing I need for it to not get on my nerves.
If there is a Single female character who can stand on equal footing with the protagonist, it’s all okay from me. A female character who can challenge the protagonist in some shape or form, and not be demonized for it. A female character who can exist with the protagonist, who the narrative doesn’t force to compete. A proof that the author/story won’t automatically portray female characters in a bad light because she is female. That is what I need.
Of course, I understand why there would be female characters like that, I do read these books for self-indulgence and I do love comeuppance upon people who have wronged you. Authors should write as they please, and if it’s not my cup of tea, that’s okay. Regardless, when I read a story where our female protagonist is only able to connect with male characters because our female protagonist is ‘not like other people’ and ‘special’, and the other female characters vapid or second fiddle to the protag, i mourn for the relationships that could’ve been. This is a very, very, very long-winded way to say I love the female friendships we get in Surviving Romance.
I love that the girls can be smart, scared, fat, quiet, loud, weak, and you know what? As they should, because they are human. And I could probably go on about Surviving Romance more, but this rant has gone on far longer than I intended. Sorry if this is incomprehensible, I am very passionate about this it seems, and i guess i wanted to type it down in a place where somebody could semi-understand my pain??? I am so sorry oh my gosh, you don’t have to read all that or even reply, but I just want you to know you’ve give my brain like. Electricity by providing that recommendation for Surviving Romance. You have actual immaculate taste, thank you for your time, i just wanted to let you know you basically rewired my brain.
Honestly one of my biggest mistakes was making my first isekai Who Made Me A Princess which, like, doesn't do that shit and also The Villainess Lives Again which super doesn't do that shit. And then I read Your Throne whose entire conceit is tearing down that shit and identifying the Real Enemy: the patriarchy.
This was one of my biggest problems with time travel *kinda* villainess isekai, Solitary Lady where the other girl is her adoptive younger sister like...yeah she's a ditz but she was also adopted into the shitty abusive family, and in being kinda sheltered, fucking obviously she'd emulate the shitty abusive family members. The thing was that without her family's support, she was as good as abandoned and the instant she realized the protagonist was OP, she *did* do the allegedly smart thing and try to suck up to her so as to not be on her bad side. But she still gets a lot of shit for being??? Bratty??? Like okay, she's a teenager? Also, she's loved by the shitty family while protagonist girl isn't? Like okay, but how the hell is that HER fault???? And of course, there are some stories that just take a really mean-spirited and classist route (Solitary Lady definitely has its grossly classist fucking moments like there being a snide remark at the sister for being adopted, like fuck off how can you think you're in the right if you portray that shit as deserved). And then some just get weird. Shoutout to that one where the enemy was gay people. I hope this means another man stole your boyfriend, author.
Point being is that I have an absurd fascination with this genre. But the internalized misogyny (along with the serious classism on occasion) fucking sucks. Even initially decent examples such as Beware of the Villainess fuck up on that front with how little Yuri gets to do in s2. But I do still like this genre. I recently started In This Life, I Became The Queen, and I'm really enjoying it thus far. Sadly, its handle of non-protagonist female characters is...shaky thus far, but some of them haven't been fully introduced yet so there's still hope I think. Wouldn't count on it, but I do like the protagonist quite a bit. I found the depiction of her body insecurities to be mostly tactful. (Mostly) At the very least, it's pretty uncommon to portray a female character as unwilling to show off her figure because she was traumatized by how she was shamed for it. Which actually feels close to realistic. In general, Ariadne isn't as above it all as her fellow protagonists and her uncertainties and struggles feel a tad more substantial. Also, I like how she sweetens on the youngest sister.
Mind you for specifically your problem, I would just beg you to read Your Throne if you haven't already. Your Throne is *so* fucking good.

I'm curious now, what do you think your main barrier of entry when it comes to fantasy games/media?
Like....why I'm not that into them? Like what does it have to have to make me invested? (retyping this for the 1000th time ngl)
Hm.....Fantasy just makes me thinks: Knights, dragons, elves and dwarves and wizards and stuff (I generally think of the EU medieval times and....I don't really care for EU medieval times). Ye old english types.... So if that's the setting and vibe of the medium, I'mma need something else to pull me in (either something in the plot, visual design, or someone I know is watching it and I somehow get roped into it).
If it gives off that vibe, with that time period, in that location..... I'm not really for it. (I know that's a VERY limited/restrictive way of looking at the Fantasy genre, but that's usually what I see TT0TT)
I can enjoy it (ex: like I'm not super into mech shows but I can find some I find appealing to me), but it's a work by work basis. It's not the genre I'm actively seeking.
Fyi on the genres I like: Mysteries, Murder Mysteries, psychological thriller, school drama (like involving bullying), revenge thrillers, Death Game (even if it doesn't involve actual death), Phantom Thief, Action adventure (describes most shonens), (shojo/jousei) romance, webtoon isekai/reincarnation (specifically villains) romances (in this case I'm not really reading for the romance, just want to see how they'll survive, this is the closest I get to the type of fantasy I usually shy away from).
A lot of these feel very char focused ngl, which I think tracks for things I've said before.
Things that'll get me interested in a story I otherwise might not have been interested in (from least weight in my influence to most weight): Art style, creator, or premise.
And a special 4th category for Fantasy, modernism (Harry Potter, Little Witch Academia, FF7/15 and so on).
Art Style: Do I like the way it looks (most risky, I've read some real trash just bc I thought the art style was a bit appealing TT0TT)
Creator: Have I interacted with their other work? Maybe I'll like this one too!
Premise: What gets my attention (it doesn't mean it's good or bad, just what interests me). Usually it'll include one of the genres I like. :3
UO doesn't really....fit any of the things I'm looking for. FE Fates did (I liked the premise a lot)....but I was told it was the "worst one" so I didn't bother with it. ;w; ReFan is hitting some of them (and being hard carried by art and creator, premise is an ok for me).

I've been seeing u post a lot about webtoons and I have been wanting to get into them. I've read uhh tower of god and player 2 and I did like tower of god but not enough to suck me into the webtoon world!!
Would you maybe have any to recommend a beginner :3
Is there a genre you're more into? I mostly read Isekai villainess so I don't know if you'll like it as much
But I think beware of the villainess may be a good start since it's a comedy!

Do you read or follow other comics beside BCB? – If so, do you have recommendations?
Ah, gonna have to think long and hard about this one.
I used to have a bookmark folder full of comics I'd open every morning and check the ones that updated, but most of those are dead in the water these days. I feel like my interests in comics fell off the side of the planet when Covid started hitting, so I haven't done as much comic reading or comic searching these days to replace the ones I've dropped.
My tastes seem to go in a lot of different directions, unfortunately of these titles, BCB is the only one like it in the ones I do read. I'm still reading through some other ones I've been meaning to get into and can't really easily advocate for them. The ones I do recommend though in no particular order:
Parisa - Stars two characters helping an amnesiac spirit who's dropped in on them through their world, what was to be an easy job turned into a journey. If you have any interest in Sonic and/or Klonoa then you'll fit at home. Ellen is an acquaintance I've known through a number of websites.
Death-Head's deal - I'd been following an artist who had recently started their hand at a comic and uploading onto webtoons this year. Follows a mute character in a legal mafia involved with some illegal dealings at the right price. Pleased with the writing. Hoping it goes places.
Sleepless Domain - Needing to catch up on this myself but think Magical Girl School.
Blastwave comic - Pretty good, remember reading this when I was in highschool, that being said it hasn't updated much since highschool either. The art is good, the comedy has its moments.
Belzebubs - Not exactly a webcomic and is meant to be the book but the author's tumblr often updates individual pages. Deathmetal family cross modern day Addam's Family. There are some pretty good strips here and there. Be forewarned some strips get particularly horny so...
Shag and Scoob - Haven't honestly read this in a year and due for a catch up but pretty sure this story goes off the planet eventually. If you're a fan of the old Cartoon network/Hanna Barbera stuff then this is pleasant.
Witch Hunter/Buster - By Jung-man Cho, can't link to this one specifically. Amazingly good story but my only gripe about it personally is the story takes a huge hiatus from the main characters for some of the volumes? A character part of a larger organisation at war with witches has ties to his enemies.
Kemono Jihen - By Aimoto Shou. Pretty good manga if you're into a combination of shonen, mystery and the occult. Deals with a detective who investigates into the occult and takes a boy in from a nearby village who has a particular affliction.
Senpai ga Uzai Kouhai no Hanashi/ 'My Senpai is annoying' - Shiro Manta, Read this while it was a 4koma. Very cute story of a short office girl who starts falling in love with her office senior.
Soredemo Ayumu wa Yosetekuru/'Even so, Ayumu draws closer to the endgame' - Soichiro yamamoto. Done by the same person who created Teasing Master Takagi-san, this story takes place in the same universe and same school however centers around the club president of the shogi club and it's only member who has a crush on her, but won't admit it until he beats her in shogi. Personally, I'd rate it a far better story because I'm not a huge fan of the 'in your face' aspect of Takagi.
Isekai Ojisan/'Uncle from another world' by Hotondo Shindeiru, probably the only isekai manga I'd advertise. Stars a hopeless character who wakes from a coma they entered towards the later end of the 90's but was really teleported into another world, now having to re-adjust to modern day Japan. Pretty good but if you don't like to cringe every so often, you're not gonna like it.
Do let me know what comics you'd recommend.
