What's better: convincing a publisher to issue your book, or going your own way?

I just exchanged messages with copywriter-turned-novelist friend-of- longstanding Kim about getting her novel published.  Her manuscript is 190,000 words long – mercifully shorter than War And Peace’s 587,000 words, but daunting nonetheless – making it problematic to find a commercial publisher willing to assume the expense of issuing her book, along with the attendant risk.

Kim knows just how difficult this will be, as do I, recently confirmed by Louis Menand in his New Yorker story “Remainders,” where he writes about just how challenging it is for publishers to offer books people actually want to buy, pointing out,

“two-thirds of the books released by the top-ten trade publishers sell fewer than a thousand copies, and less than four per cent sell more than twenty thousand.”

A couple of years back I wrote that The Art of Client Service passed the 20,000 copies-sold sales mark.  As of last month, make that 24,000-plus copies and counting, putting me in elite company, better than the 96% of authors, most of whom are nowhere close to achieving that number. 

How many published books are there?  Menand actually supplies the number:

“Today, something like three million books are published every year, including self-published e-books that are available only on digital platforms.”

Among this veritable publishing tsunami, Amazon serves as the dominant player, constituting, “more than half of all book purchases in the United States and offering, “something like thirty million different print titles.”

What this tells us is the vast majority of books are perishable; they have a sales-blip moment and then all but disappear.  In comparison, even after eight-plus years, Art endures and copies still sell; why is that?

Menand has a theory:  “Most books are used, not read.” 

That might be it.  With its short, fast-reading chapters and “How To” guidance, The Art of Client Service is designed to be a reference resource, something to turn to when advice on crafting a proposal, presentation, or Creative Brief is needed.   

In working first with Dearborn Press, then Kaplan, and now John Wiley & Sons, I’ve learned what is the hard truth about commercial publishers:  unless your name is Michael Lewis, Malcolm Gladwell, or Jennifer Egan, your publisher, no matter how committed to your book, will perform more like printers and distributors than publishers, expecting you, as author, to shoulder the heavy load of promoting and selling what you’ve written. 

Fiction is but a fraction of the total books published in the U.S. – estimates range from just 30% to 40% -- making Kim’s mission to find an agent then a publisher rife with potential failure.   Would it make sense, then, to simply self-publish, sidestepping the disappointment of one-too-many a rejection letter?

When Roberta and I self-published Brain Surgery for Suits almost 25 years ago, the task was complicated.  Find a book designer.  Find a printer.  Find a book distributor.  Register an ISBN number with the Library of Congress.  The list of tasks seemingly is endless.

These days, self-publishing is vastly easier, with several companies offering to do much of the work for you, Amazon, Xlibris, and iUniverse among dozens of other worthy candidates.  If the cost of printing is a barrier, then do an e-book and avoid that expense.

I’ve written a couple of times before about the challenge facing writers striving to find their way into print – first here, then here -- so I am a realist when it comes to what Kim and other writers confront.  This perhaps explains why so many people say they, “ want to write and publish a book,” when so few actually do.

Kim did an extraordinary job, just finishing what is a mammoth undertaking, but in truth -- assuming it finds its way onto print as a self-published effort or with a commercial publisher – an even bigger challenge awaits:  promoting it.

Channeled Angelic Wisdom of the Jewels of Truth Series on Beneficence and Heaven on Earth

Hello All,

Color me amused that I've found the time to share another entry on eclectic topics of the Jewels of Truth series of channeled angelic wisdom. Each of my 3 volumes of books published by iUniverse has a dizzy array of 365 smorgasbord of topics in an A-Z format. My books aren't in chapter format but rather an ongoing clairaudient (clear Intuitive telepathic hearing/listening by dictation) from the angels. Coupled with another clairvoyant ability known as Claircognizance (clear Inner knowing usually knowledge and wisdom beyond my lived experiences). 

Today's duo of topics are on Beneficence and Heaven on Earth. The former is about an affirmation I have used for years privately to calm myself from anxiety when it arises. It seems the angel finally hinted I should channel it into a statement. The next topic of Heaven on Earth goes more into the direction of holy consecrated ground that the pure of heart in the world is akin to bloodhounds able to locate such spots. Also, how holy enchanted saints and prophets can imbue the divine into the world by their actions in part. 

May you the reader come away with certain curiosities satiated with the well-being of the sublime realities. As a channeler via telepathy and Inspirational psychic automatic writing for over 28+ years as a spiritual devotion. That's my vantage point when Intuitively perceiving and receiving these darling gems of wonder from the angelic heavenly host as our united Divine Inheritance. Amen.

3306) There are words of endearment that mean so much wherever they transport you directly back into the loving embrace of God(dess) as him/her/and itself simultaneously as a multi-dimensional Perfect Deified Supreme Being. One such affirmation is this coined by "Ivan the Atrayo" that we the Heavenly Host support entirely. 

"A Love for a Love, A Gift for a Gift, and a Life for a Life of God. Amen."

What this denotes to us is an Inclusive sensitive soul yearning to be full and content with a potentially better life, however, and by whatever blessed means possible. To further explore a "Love for a Love" is a genuine exchange of the love of God(dess) to whichever end possible. A "Gift for a Gift" is another sublime exchange of graces interlaced with all that is auspicious in enriched holy nature. Finally, a "Life for a Life" is the wholesome wellness to exchange the perfect essence of God the Creator in its most creative expression possible.

To embark upon a journey that assails you of all prior misgivings in order to overcome the world by means of a celebratory salvation that is always at hand. In order to claim one's solemn and sacred Divine Inheritance upon the nexus crossing of the Infinity of Here as the place of places. With the Eternity of Now as the moment of moments forever. 

To Be full of grace mindfully and in a heart-centered capacity to have exquisite enrichment with every blessed encounter possible. To instill a gorgeous wonder in a hard-struck human-led world of great injustice and at times misery by the contrast of the fates. 

All whom strive for all that is Heavenly by Faith in a crystalized Divine Order that reconciles heartache for the beautiful Glory of God earnestly. In Being True with a Pure Heart in order to be vertically aligned with what is otherwise gracious by healing the human heart and divine soul within forever as the Beneficence of God(dess). Heaven on Earth:

3290) Not all places are visible to the naked eye when it comes to the spiritual holiest environs of the world. Here is where an astute Inner feeling tingling of genuine warmth by a softening gentleness Internally sparks the Intuition. This is how to gauge the divine holy consecrated ground upon the world beyond your human carnal body of 5 senses of finite perceptions. 

Such a resolve aids to approach with the utmost dignity and with great humility for all concerned by whichever Faith is best for the supplicant to come forward earnestly. Have dimensionally opened up energetic pockets akin to geysers of emotional mental health states of exalted divinity of metaphysical purity or in other words Heaven on Earth. 

Beyond such abodes as places of worship with the divine in isolation and/or upon a congregation of living worshippers. There are holy souls such as the Saints and Prophets of either human gender. They have the capacity to galvanize a holy vortex continually opened over their Halos or the Hindu Crown Chakra region at the back of a human scalp. 

Such remarkable souls of great godly esteem can entreat the heavens to come through their auric spiritual states of higher Inner being. To enact great wonders of sheer audacity that curve the confines of your reality well into the miraculous feats of Biblical renown. These highly favored godly angelic souls are touched by God personally for all intents and purposes having dedicated their solemn lives as people back to God(dess) for all eternity. The Angelic Heavenly Host fosters such a grand union with an Immense gift of priceless living gratitude upon them universally. 

Some prophets make personalized compacts with the Lord God the Lord of All Immaculate Hosts upon Heaven and beyond with the looming farthest reaches of Creation. To be forever servant leaders in whatever capacity their loving strengths and talents may reside truly therein upon this world currently. 

Not all compacts of such indelible auspices become new religions from the prophets. Many support existing spiritual monotheist and even polytheist spiritual philosophical traditions overall. Not all prophets are to be fully recognized by humanity at large in any given decade of their finite lifetime on earth. A sense of revenant anonymity by means of reincarnation pervades their lifetime with authentic humility.
