© Ian Tilton photographs Kurt Cobain.
"September 22, 1990. During some rehearsals, Kurt Cobain destroys his guitar by throwing it against the amplifiers and then escapes behind the scenes and release all his emotions: anger, frustration, pain. Photographer Ian Tilton does not miss the scene and takes us on this dive into the suffering of a great rock artist".

Considered one of the most beautiful rock photographs ever, Ian Tilton's shot is a real foray into Kurt Cobain's evil. It was taken on September 22, 1990 during some rehearsals: Kurt smashed his guitar against the amplifier and then escaped backstage to release all his emotions: anger, frustration, pain.
Tilton immortalized all the imperfect, vulnerable humanity of an artist.

Considered one of the most beautiful rock photographs ever, Ian Tilton's shot perfectly captures Kurt Cobain's torment. The photo was taken on September 22, 1990 during some rehearsals: Kurt smashed his guitar against the amplifier and then ran backstage to vent all his emotions: anger, frustration, pain.
Tilton has immortalized all the imperfect and vulnerable humanity of an artist.
"The most powerful images are those that capture the essence of a tormented soul."

The story behind one of the best and most emotional photos in rock history; Kurt Cobain Crying Backstage - Taken by Ian Tilton 1990 //
Kurt Cobain (with Jonathan Poneman of Sub Pop Records) at Motor Sports International Garage in Seattle, WA 09/22/90 - Photographer Ian Tilton: "They did a brilliant gig, I got great pics of him smashing the guitar and then he went backstage and burst into tears. I thought it would make a good photo, but should l take it because it is a vulnerable moment? I am not a paparazzi, l am a documentary photographer. He knew l wasn't pushy and l took a shot - he didn't say no. I took three in all and the first shot he was crying, in the second shot he was sort of ok and the third one he was smiling. A minute between the three was about all this different kind of energy inside him and when he came backstage the energy had to go somewhere. Normally rock stars want to control how they look to the public, but Kurt was different."

"The photograph of Kurt Cobain in tears has been extensively published. Tilton watched Cobain smash his guitar through an amplifier and walk offstage. He followed him backstage. The pent-up emotion ‘just had to go somewhere,’ says Tilton, and Cobain burst into tears. ‘What I really love about it is that it is a very real moment and he allowed it. Other artists would have said, ‘Not now, Ian, please.’ It is very unusual,” adds Tilton, ‘for anyone from a band to show such vulnerability.’”
