Song Review: Frank Zappa - “Khaki Sack”

Previously unreleased and “composed and played by the Mothers before 1970,” Frank Zappa’s latest sprung-from-the-vault release reveals a rarely heard side of the multi-faceted composer and musician.

Following “Work With Me Annie/Annie Had a Baby” From the forthcoming (June 30) Funky Nothingness, “Khaki Sack” is a bluesy shuffle running eight instrumental minutes and sounds more like a studio jam than an actual composition. Heavy on Ian Underwood’s organ and with Zappa playing guitar in a mostly unfamiliar style and tone, it has a Booker T & the M.G.’s-kind of feel.

In the end, “Khaki Sack” is most interesting because it’s been gathering dust for nearly 55 years. But bushing it off reveals costume jewelry rather than an actual gem.

Oh Anon, what a question to ask. I briefly mentioned some of my favourite pieces last year, which is probably the best place to start. I, to no one's suprise, accumulated more great things since then that I will eventually show.

This is a Japanese promotional programme for the 2019 movie, and unlike the English promotional booklet, contains all manner of information on the movie, creative team, cast, and musical. It really is a great piece.

What makes this piece so special (if it was not obvious by the front cover), is that it was signed by a large group of the named cast from the movie.
