Why are there so many time travel fix it fics and so few time travel fuck it up fics.

I get the urge to make everyone happy but what if the real happy ending is them being sent back and trapped in a Groundhog Day time loop where they desperately try to fix the past using what they know now, only to fuck it up worse every time. Only to finally escape the constant loop of fresh new horrors by realizing that they did the best they could, that the option they took in the first place was awful but every other option was worse. Then safely back in their scarred and traumatized post-canon selves they can find peace no longer plagued by what-ifs, now sound in the knowledge that they actually could’ve fucked it up even more.

Or maybe they think they succeeded only to to confront the sacrifices that are created in consequence. Grief for deeply loved things that never come to pass in this timeline because of their decisions. (You simply cannot convince me that a time traveling Jiang Cheng would be perfectly fine with things playing out in such a way that leads to Jin Ling never existing. I want him unhinged over a loss he can’t acknowledge without looking utterly insane to the non time travelers around him. I want his every step haunted by the phantom of a life that never was!!! The shadow of what was given up lurking beneath the surface of every new happiness! Knowing he destroyed one loved one to save others! Tormented by the horrible consequence of success!!!)

I don’t usually go for time travel as a plot device in general because it creates a lot of headaches but if there’s time travel I want knives out maximum pain I guess!

hello! sorry for taking 2 billion years to reply; i've been going through it.

onto some fic recs:

ace of spades by jemkay - magic, fantasy, politics - this is my favourite kookmin fic and it's a wip but i've read it 3 times now and if it's never finished, i'd be perfectly okay with that because it is such a fantastic fic that i will be grateful i got to read even in its incomplete glory. jimin has the ability to control death, sort of? and he is able to come back over and over even after he dies. there's also magic and magic users have a special connection with an animal - jimin's is a cute little bunny - and the worldbuilding is SO well thought out!!!! there's just so much to dig into with this fic.

you never walk alone by jemkay - fantasy, omegaverse, tw for abuse and violence - this will 100% make you cry but it's so incredibly good. this is definitely more character driven and jeongguk focused but still very worth it. jemkay's worldbuilding is incredible. she always weaves everything together in her fics and every fic of hers i get to read is a little gift. also, her ability to write abuse in a realistic way and also add in how abuse would impact werewolves is so so so brilliant and clever?? she's just incredibly talented and i love her.

firewatch by ashlyn17 - a murder mystery/thriller - i really enjoyed this and ashlyn17 is probably one of the best action/adventure writers in kookmin fandom, i think. she writes really engaging plot driven fic and jimin ends up with amnesia in this fic so you're trying to figure out what's happening with him while forest ranger jeongguk is dealing with a stalker who is after jimin and is threatening violence against jeongguk and the other rangers.

sunflower by rkiveink - this features autistic!jeongguk and i really enjoyed how rkiveink depicted autism. it's well done and thoughtful but i'm not autistic so my opinion is kinda irrelevant at the end of the day. i also just enjoyed how jimin grows more confident in this by seeing that confidence in jeongguk! also jeongguk is just so...cool? i really love how unapologetically himself he is and i love all the LARPing stuff -3-

Midnight on the Firing Line: 30 years since it first aired, time to rewatch Babylon 5, baby. it's gonna be a little weird doing this at the same time as DS9.

i don't always watch tv at 9am, but i sure do when i'm feeding a 3-week-old baby. gotta start 'em young on the 1990s science fiction tv shows.

i should really watch the pilot movie sometime. this episode always feels like being tossed into the middle of something-- which is good, because there's a lot going on-- but i always wonder if this episode lands differently after the pilot.

man, i don't really think any of the characters change so much as Londo and G'Kar do. like stuff happens to everyone else, and they certainly develop, but they don't grow quite like these two. seeing them in these early episodes is such a trip every time.

Delenn looks so odd without hair. also i love her robe in the council meeting.

For books with actually tiny fairies, may I suggest the Faery Rebel trilogy by R J Anderson? There's SOME content of human sized fairies but only because the fairies figured out sizeshifting, they're naturally small and that's how they are for most of the story!

Hola I just find out about this cute series and I thought you might be interested. It has radioapple with jealous background Vox, and Lucy in that order. 1 Part and 2 Part (in case the link doesn’t work it’s called ‘Speculations on Unexpected and Unwelcome Video Evidence’ by flaggermousse, she has other one shots uploaded,from the same series, on her account and they are so good absolutely recommend)

I am really fascinated by how relatable Al is in here, like the fact that he doesn’t like if an outsider look at his relationship with the king and sees him as the weak one. Cause ofc he is gotta be aware about the power dynamics between them, and that’s just so Alastor core, but Lucy loves him and always reassures him and my heart mealts every time Godammit I LOVE THOSE POOKIES SO MUCH🥺💖

SFW(-ish): I'm always and forever into enemies to lovers/idiots to lovers, as well as relationships that start with sex and then lead to feelings. Especially if they're bad at feelings.

Not a trope, but I'm really loving Shoto Todoroki fics these days, though to be honest, I hate how smooth and suave so many writers write him. Him and all the Todorokis. They are not suave. They are dummies that don't understand sarcasm and make grand romantic gestures way too soon and I need more of it. So if anyone has any dumbass Todoroki fic recs, send em on over.

And then for NSFW: Breeding kink & baby-trapping are at the forefront of my mind (the baby fever is hitting me hard these days, lord help me lol). Aphrodisiacs/sex pollen fics are really fun too and I for sure want to write one soon.

6. Are there any fics from others you reread all the time?

Yes!! I am constantly reading and rereading lonestar fic (to the detriment of my book tbr list 👀) if anyone is ever looking for fic recs, I got ‘em!!!

I’m currently rereading Wings Are Frayed by @iboatedhere I’ve read it at least three times in entirety, and I regularly visit it for certain scenes that have become canon to me. This is the first time I’m reading it since I created my ao3 account, so I’m leaving Rae some truly unhinged comments.

I reread a lot of her fics, but my favorites include Yours To Keep, Yours To Lose (West Wing AU!!), Pretty Face (Pretty Boyfriend, Too), Missing Someone Like You and The Right Time

I also reread @liminalmemories21 seasonal codas over and over and I wait for them every season like Pavlov’s dog.

Another one I find myself returning to a lot is Spanglish by TearsThisSideOfHeaven and pretty much everything this writer has done for Tarlos/lonestar (a couple are Carlos-Mateo focused). They have a very lovely perspective of the Latinx characters and they tell it really beautifully in a way we haven’t seen a lot of in this fandom until very recently.

There’s so, so many more I return to regularly! I recommend checking out my bookmarks. Pretty much everything in there I’ve read at least twice.

17. What’s something you’ve learned about while doing research for a fic?

I would say the biggest thing I’ve learned about is the city of Austin itself. I was just telling @carlos-in-glasses yesterday that all the research I’ve been doing for my fics is making me really consider a trip this fall. Most of the places that are mentioned in my fics are real places in Austin. Here are a few

The Nigerian restaurant & market that Paul eat at in TK Strand’s Sweet 16 (times 2) (minus 2) is real and it’s located in North Austin

Carlos’s favorite bookstore in Make Me Laugh 'till I Die, I Stand Beside You With Pride

The resort that TK & Carlos stay at in Call Me If You Get Lost is loosely based on a real estate in Austin

The hike tarlos takes in Sunshine On My Body, Rainbows Bloomin' In My Skies is based on a mixture of a real hike outside of Austin and some hikes I’ve done in my area

“Hey Marj,” TK says once he’s wrangled a wiggling Buttercup into his lifejacket and put his own marching lifejacket on. “Take our picture? I have to send one to Carlos to prove I’m wearing a lifejacket.”

“Like some kind of proof of life?” Marjan asks as she takes TK’s phone from his outstretched hand.

“He just always gets worried whenever I’m around bodies of water now,” he says as he picks Buttercup up for their photo. “Ever since the hypothermia incident.” Buttercup wiggles in his arms and turns to run his slobbery tongue up TK’s cheek. TK shrieks and giggles and Marjan takes the opportunity for a candid shot.
