Pairing: Steve Rogers x reader
Warnings: angst and Endgame spoilers, but it comes with a happy ending
Words: 1,200
Thank you to @vesta-ro for requesting this!💙 It was a lot of fun to work on, and it gave me some major flashbacks of Chasing Time:’)
Request: Angst with happy ending lol Steve went back to the past despite already married to the reader. He realised he true feeling and managed to comeback to the future years or months later. Only to see his wife is about to move on or date someone else.
You and Steve had been married for five years; soaking up the married life with picnics, movie nights where the two of you built forts together, and the once a month vacations you always took - compliments of Tony Stark himself. You’d been to Paris, Rome, Scotland, and England. Never in your life would you have expected Steve to leave you for the first woman he’d ever fallen in love with; Peggy Carter.
Their history together was made well aware in the start of your relationship where Steve confessed that he still cared about her deeply. Of course, you thought nothing of it. She’d been gone for years now, so there was no competition. Until Tony invented time travel and through a monkey wrench in your marriage. When Steve went back to return the stones there had been a part of you that thought he might actually return, but you were wrong.
The whole thing made you break down altogether, and you wanted more than anything for the pain in your chest to disappear. Everyone kept their distance; knowing it would take some time for you to cope with your new reality. It was Banner who finally did something you had never expected. He Hulked down, coming over to you as he pulled you into his arms. Banner tended to be more reserved, but he knew you needed someone to help you through this.
He gave you the courage to get back up, and start your life over again without Steve Rogers by your side. Where once you would have relied on him for everything, this had give you the opportunity to explore life on your own for the first time ever. You took trips alone, using it to do anything and everything that you had always dreamed of. Bruce had even tagged along for a few of them, keeping you company on the days when you didn’t feel like being alone.
You kept in contact with everyone from the Avengers, but they were more than understanding of your new turn on things. Being around them was fun, and it always made you happy, but, too much time with them, was enough to remind you of the good old days. Which eventually turned that happiness into a dark cloud that took over completely.
One night in Rome, sitting at the trevi fountain with Bruce Banner at your side you had felt a warmth beginning to grow in your heart that you had been refusing for a long time. The way he looked at you brought a smile to your lips, but you felt like it was wrong. Steve and Bruce had been friends for years, so doing this would mean crossing a line that you could never return from. As much as you wanted to see where this would go, you were just happy to know that you were finally starting to move on.
What you didn’t know was that Steve wasn’t taking so well to living in the past. His relationship with Peggy was on the rocks, and her expectations of him as a soldier were more than he could ever compare to. Which only put more stress on their relationship because of how hard she pushed him. That wasn’t including all the hours she spent at work. She rarely made time for him; insisting that protecting the world was it’s own reward for them as a couple.
He rummaged through the super suit that he had worn when he’d first time traveled back to Peggy and returned the stones. Tucked tightly into one of the pockets was the last of the pym particles that he had originally been given for his return six months ago. When he’d never used them, he thought it might be best to keep them safe just in case of emergency.
Deeming this entire catastrophe of a relationship emergency enough, he slipped the suit back on. He took in a heavy breath and the room began to spin around him until he was somewhere he had been before. The entire scene was all too familiar, but he couldn’t quite put his finger on where he was. All he had wanted was to go back to the future to find you, but this couldn’t have been right. Upon further inspection he realized that he was standing in Rome at the trevi fountain where the two of you had made a wish together on your first anniversary as a married couple. ‘I wish we could spend the rest of our lives growing old together.’ The words rang through his head, remembering it all too clearly.
Steve realized that what he’d done was stabbed you in the back after promising a forever with you. It was as if he was telling you he loved you while driving the knife in further and further because all he had done was lied. The realization only made the pain in his chest ache that much worse, but he prayed that, by some miracle, you might take him back.
That was until he found you sitting on the ledge next to Banner, smiling widely as the two of you laughed about something he’d said. There was a twinkle in your eyes that made him regret everything he had ever done wrong to you. Hurting you was the biggest mistake he had ever made in his entire life, and he would do anything to take it all back. To start over, and find some way to make it all up to you.
He wanted more than anything to barge in, and break things up between the two of you; after all, you were still his wife. There would be no use in causing a scene, though, it would only upset you even more. So, he did something even crazier, he went to the hotel that the two of you always stayed in and waited for you in the lobby.
When you entered the hotel your jaw dropped in shock to see Steve sitting in one of the chairs with his eyes locked on the door. You felt your heart begin to race as your eyes met his, and you couldn’t help yourself from taking off towards him and leaping into his arms.
“Where did you? How did? When?” You stammered, trying to wrap your mind around the fact that he was actually standing right in front of you. It felt like your heart was about to beat out of your chest, and there were happy tears streaming down your face.
“Y/n, I am so, so, sorry,” Steve choked out, holding you in his arms as tightly as he could, and you squeezed him back, praying this wasn’t all a dream.
“Steve, please, none of that matters anymore. All that matters it that you’re here; you’re really here,” you sobbed, pulling away to press your lips to his. You hadn’t been this happy in so long, and, with his past finally behind him, you were ready to start a whole new future together. Just the two of you; as he whispered in your ear that you would always be his best girl.
