opinions on yoshis story? imo that game doesnt deserve to have music that good

I haven't played very much of it and I've been meaning to do something about that forever. I've played some of it and I've watched others go through most of it.

I know I've seen a little bit of modern grumbling (I don't know if this was a point of contention when the game came out because I was three at the time. OK I looked up some reviews from the era and it looks like it was also a thing people were mad about back then. LOL) over the fact that the game isn't more like "Yoshi's Island" & that it feels like it's aimed more at younger audiences. I dunno. I've never been bothered much by games with some tie to one another doing something different. (Some of the response reminds me of Transformers fans being upset over Hasbro making toys and shows for very young children sometimes; admittedly maybe I'm off the mark here.)

It's a very easy game if you want it to be. You can just eat any fruits you want forever and it's over in a blink. And it's fine. It's fine if the video game lets you beat it very fast if you want to. You can also try to collect only one single kind of fruit in a level and that makes things take longer and makes them feel like more of a scavenger hunt (especially if you're trying to get all the melons). I think that's neat. There's sort of an interesting design trajectory from "Super Mario World" to "Yoshi's Island" where the levels become a little longer, a little more meandering, a little more exploratory, sometimes (not always, and not massively, but it's still there) a little less linear. No time limit. Going for collectibles instead; making every level about getting a score of 100 (if you want to). You can see that iterated on in "Yoshi's Story"! No singular end point of the level. Bigger rooms to explore (while still keeping levels relatively short). More of a focus on puzzle solving and exploration. Collectibles simplified to one meter that you fill up, but there are multiple things that can fill it & you get rewarded for only collecting one kind. (And also the hearts that let you pick what level you go to next. There's a lot of "opening up more of the game for yourself if you want to go out and look for it" here. Are there other collectibles, actually? I don't really remember...) Secret fruits that give even more points. It makes the levels feel more like puzzle box toys that you roam around in. It's neat that they designed that for younger kids and it's neat that you can make it more difficult if that sounds fun to you. (I would have to play more of it myself to decide if going for all melons is fun for me specifically. But I like it on paper, y'know?)

The pop-up storybook theming is cute and the visual aesthetic of the game overall works really well. It feels like arts & crafts dioramas made by kids (or with kids) so they could play pretend with their toys while reading a storybook. It's got very strong toy feel overall. The music is really fun!!! It does the dynamic soundtrack thing where some parts of the track change depending on your health!!! I'm always clapping my hands like a seal with a game's music changes depending what I'm doing!!! Maybe it's a little silly of me to say this, given that it's a sentiment I've had in the past, but nowadays I scratch my head a bit at "the music in this has no right to go this hard" type comments. It goes hard because the musicians got hired to make it like that. (I'm imagining a guy who thinks the "Yoshi's Story" music is the hardest music ever created and I'm smiling serenely about it. I hope he's real & I hope he's out there somewhere.) I'm glad they let Totaka do something that feels at least a little experimental for the goofy Yoshi babies storybook super happy yay & jumping throwing game soundtrack. It's a fun contrast, isn't it? It feels very of-the-era in a way I'm having trouble externalizing outside of "well it's a little weird and multi-genre". It's neat that they all have a shared melody that they draw on.

I didn't want to post about any of this, but this person forced my hand.

I can't let this person run around on this hellsite anymore.

For those not in the know, this person harasses artists into drawing their husbando: a rat character named "Grey" from the children's series "Larva Island". Sometimes they also harass people into drawing Grey's grandpa, a female version of Grey named "Greyless", Grey wearing Roxanne's dress from "A Goofy Movie", and plenty of parodies of the opening scene of said movie. Like, they subjected one person to draw that same sequence with different characters like 6-7 times. And the "best" part? Sometimes they steal the poor victim's art to claim it as their own. And sometimes, they create edits of them WITHOUT CREDITING THE ORIGINAL ARTISTS. And when they do get caught, they apologize. A lot. But that's only a front to get respect again.

They have the most accounts on Tumblr, with five (two of them are inactive.) The second biggest is wikia, with four. The earliest accounts were on DeviantArt, which makes a lot of sense. Oh, but it gets better. They have uncensored nsfw content on two tumblrs. This is from one of their accounts. I am not going to show you the image, but I'm going to show you the tags:

Let the motherfucker stare, you've got shit due tonight. It's not like you're unaccustomed to annoying attention from men and their "you'd look so much better if you smiled" bullshit.

Fuck. You got yourself in a mood now.

Like clockwork, a tuft of grown-out bleached hair and a pair of golden eyes peeks out hoping to catch yours without detection. You snap in his directions and he ducks again. You swear to God you hear a giggle and the rustling thud of a heel knocking into a limb.

When you look, no, glare back, the decoy textbook is down and he's smiling, wide and goofy (and rubbing his shin). You raise a brow and go back to your work, fruitlessly, because he takes the acknowledgement as an invitation. Before you know it hes dragging a heavy wooden chair loudly and sitting across from you.

He's tall. He's huge, really. He's objectively rather gorgeous with a nice jawline and lively eyes that study you, like you're the only thing, even in a building full of decades and decades of knowledge, worth studying.

"Can I fucking help you?"

"i think you can."

"I've got a deadline in 2 hours, make it quick."

"Let me take you for a late night meal. A reward for finishing your....school thing." You almost want to laugh. School thing? Does he even go here? He must sense the shift in mood and it further boosts his confidence. "Come on," he lets the word wobble like a kid pushing their luck, "you're the coolest girl in this place, let me show you a good time."

You can't place it exactly, maybe it's in the wiggle of his eyebrows or the groan of secondhand embarrassment from his friend not far away, but you get a relatively innocent vibe. You turn him away with a terse, maybe and watch as he wanders back to his friend, bounce in his step and high on premature victory.

His gaze isn't as heavy for the duration of your time there. He busies himself with doodles in the margins of Kisaki's work that he thought was math, but maybe is actually Greek; Shuji doesn't care. He's got an absolute beauty on his mind.

He's enraptured by her. Her focused scowl and the way her eyes narrow at the screen. The way her lips purse around the straw of what once was probably iced coffee. The art in her skin that he can see until the aircon kicks on and she puts another layer back on. Shuji is reminded in that moment that he hates the cold so, so much, and even more now that it's stolen away a part of the art he'd been admiring.

He huffs and loses himself if scribbling whatever comes to mind to kill time. He misses you packing your things quietly, work completed just before the deadline and he jumps to cover his scribbles when you clear your throat.

"I'm hungry."

"Hi hungry, I'm Hanma."

You groan, "Actually I'm leaving."

"Come on it was funny!"

"Are you twelve?"

You bicker with the cute giant the whole way out of the library with a smile tugging at your lips. You'd seen the scribbles, he wasn't slick.

Variations of, "God she's kind of insanely pretty. No seriously she's so pretty" up and down the margins. This guy was kind of embarrassing, silly, a wildcard, and well, those are the best people to eat fast food with at 11:59 pm.

It's the first of many midnight snacks.

some manga i've read

I have a LOT of manga in my room, so I thought it would be cool to tell you about some of them!

Mr. Villain's Day Off

I first heard about this series when I saw its anime trailer on YouTube. Coincidentally, I found two books of the original manga in my local Barnes and Noble, so that's why I bought them! I like this series because it's a slice-of-life parody of the sentai genre, and I also appreciate the titular character's love of pandas! I even liked how each of the heroes had backstories.

Favorite Character: Mr. Villain

X-Gender

This book was a great pick because it discusses queer topics in a respectful and informative manner. It is an autobiography about the author's experiences with their gender and sexuality, and if you're wondering what "x-gender" means, it's a Japanese term for being nonbinary.

Favorite Character: N/A

Uramichi Oniisan

Oh my god. This series is HILARIOUS. All of the main characters have a dysfunctional, but harmonious dynamic when they work together on stage. Everything Uramichi does or says makes me cry and laugh at the same time.

Heaven's Design Team

This is another series that makes me laugh, and I've seen clips of the anime before getting my hands on the manga. It reminds me of those "God creating animals" memes that were popular on Twitter back in the 2010's. It's peak edutainment, and each character has a very eccentric personality!

Favorite Characters: Venus and Yokota

Kirby Manga Mania

I decided to give this one a try, because who doesn't love Kirby? The art style is bubbly and bright, and the humor goes off the walls! I find it weird how Kirby talks normally instead of going "poyo poyo" all the time.

Favorite Characters: Kirby and King Dedede

Precarious Woman Executive Miss Black General

Yeezus, that's a long title. I picked this one out because I thought the art style looked cool. It's a story about a villainess with a crush on Totally-Not-Batman. I enjoyed the slapstick and the amazing character design.

Cells at Work!

Here's another edutainment anime. The depictions of each microorganism are really cool, and I liked the scenes where the cells had to fight off against nasty viruses! It even does a good job at explaining how the body works by providing bits and bobs of information throughout the panels.

Little Miss P

I've never seen a manga that talks about periods before, and I'm glad it exists. This book is relatable because I hate it when my period arrives, but I understand getting your period is normal. I'm quite fond of the messy art style, too.

Merman in My Tub

I remember cheerily reblogging and liking posts about it last year, and I still love it to this day! All of the characters have vibrant personalities, and I really like the designs of each merman. This series is light-hearted and goofy, so that's why I think it's awesome.

I'm gonna make two more parts later on. The second one will be about cats, and the third one will be about horror.

More Than Just Laughs

Something I love about ATLA is its handling of the characters. One of my favorites from it (and that's saying a lot since I enjoy so many) is Sokka. (Spoilers ahead)

Very easily, he could've been just the comedic relief. I've seen characters where they exist to make a joke and for no other reason. If they were real people, you'd probably try to have them go get therapy because clearly, joking is their coping mechanism for everything. Sokka's not like that. Sure, he's funny, but he's also the team leader. I do not think I have ever seen a show/movie/read a book where the main comedic relief is also the group leader. I love that. It's so unique. Automatically, it sets him up as more than someone you're not supposed to take seriously because you are supposed to take him seriously. He's in charge of this group of people who are going to stop the world from being burnt to ashes. On top of it, he's genuinely a good leader. It's not one of those times where the characters keep telling you someone can lead. Sokka has proven his skill with various plans like on the day of black sun and at Boiling Rock to name a couple.

One of the best episodes for Sokka was "Jet." I enjoyed that because it gave a contrast to their leadership styles and tested the Water Tribe boy. Everyone there thought Jet was the better leader. He seemed more commanding, he was cool, he could fight, etc., but Sokka was able to still come out on top and save innocent lives even when his own sister didn't believe him.

Sokka is just so smart too. Outside of plans, he's great with inventions (it's okay that he has 0 art skills. Not everyone needs those) and offers a nice pragmatic viewpoint for the group. He's a realist with what they should and can do. A very cool/hard moment from him to me was in the final episodes while they're training with the Melon Lord. Even though it's just a melon, he demonstrates a willingness to get the job done and kill if it means more lives will be saved in the process. This isn't standard of a "joke character." Yet, Sokka can pull it all off without something seeming forced.

Sokka can be this goofy guy who is higher than the clouds on cactus juice without it seeming weird for him. His luck is terrible and we can laugh at that, him becoming the butt of the joke.

Then, we can also see Sokka really trying to figure out his skills and his place on the team in terms of combat. Him learning from Master Piandao was amazing. He's been this cocky kid so much, but he truly was humble here and it's why he was trained. Sokka still was by no means a master swordsman, but he did what he had to do to get better and be able to protect his friends.

Sokka is also a good big brother. I think people forget about his protective some because Katara is such a master, but I think it says something that the only time he really got aggressive with Aang was after he burned Katara. Besides that, it was great to watch him go from an ignorant, sexist guy to someone who could rely and be relied on by such amazing female characters. The moment of him standing up for Katara in "The Painted Lady" was an underrated sweet moment too.

Also, let's not forget that Combustion Man died because of Sokka's AMAZING aim with that boomerang. Again, he's cool with killing if it'll help.

I mean, maybe we should be concerned by that smile...but it's Sokka. Can't stay disturbed by him for long. He's great. Just ask Suki.

What are your thoughts on the IDW Sonic artists that aren't people brought over from Archie? (like Jack Lawrence, Aaron Hammerstrom, Bracardi Curry, Thomas Rothlisberger, Mauro Fonseca, etc).

I decided to go off and list off the major ones you listed here, because I'm a sucker for looking into these things long after they were written apparently. That, and I really don't want to play 'Who was IDW Exclusive?' at all.

Jack Lawrence: I don't really know what to say? He goes over the top with the chibi style (most evidenced with how he handles Sonic's eyebrows) And I feel some his artwork could be reworked better to keep the characters from being cutesy, but his work on Scrapnik Isle is fantastic, and his emotions are on point with the characters, even though I feel sometimes they suffer from the words not matching the expression (though that's more the writer's fault, not the artist's).

Arron Hammerstrom: Apparently he wrote 'Rough Patch' in the 2022 Annual? Heard all of those stories in the annual were crap, but I have no frame of reference for that, so I won't comment on it.

As for his art, he's pretty damn good! Got a lot of variety in his style, and isn't afraid to branch out into different styles according to his cover arts. Which he had more freedom with his styles, because man I feel his art styles should be given more focus over ABT.

Bracardi Curry: Dude, this guy's got a lot of skill I think is needed for the comics! Why's he only doing the linearts and the colours, as well as the Covers? His covers are amazing to see, and I really want to see him do inner pages or do his own webcomic at some point. This guy's freaking talented, and he's being wasted on a poorly written comic...

Thomas Rothlisberger: Dude suffers from 'two or more people standing around in an endless void on one colour', which all of his covers are, but he does try to invoke some scenes with them. The last one he did for the comic he tries to give more of a background, but it's obvious that the smoke is there to hide the fact that he can't draw backgrounds for shit. (I mean, same, so...)

Mauro Fonseca: He did this shitty ass cover of Impostor Syndrome #4:

All of Fonsesca's covers are either 'too cluttered' or 'have no focal point that makes sense'. They're so cluttered and over wrought it makes me wonder what he's putting in the inner pages of the comic themselves, because damn are they festered with uncessecary details and things that take the attention away from the main focal point. Like, I can't stop staring at the puddles with Surge's lightning, or Tails being randomly washed away.

I mean, he somewhat gets better with his alt cover for Scrapnik Isle, but man does it still suffer from 'no true focal point' like his other attempts:

Like, the focal point being Mecha's eye is good, but it's such an intense colour you're either looking up toward the smoke above him and Sonic, or to the goofy ass Scrapnik eyes in the background to alleviate some of the intensity. There's also Sonic's mouth being off because it's not fully on his cheek like the games would do. It's square in his face which makes him look like a badly designed emoticon instead of, well, Sonic.

He's also listed as an artist for STC:O!, and IIRC STC:O! has had problems with badly done art for their stories, and it kind of feels weird to read it when the pages aren't particulary good.

small chainsaw man analysis

Chainsaw man will never be able to be correctly made into an anime because its art style fundamentally doesn't work animated. so much of the chainsaw man characterization and humor comes from fujimotos ability to draw exaggerated expressions and poses. And animation frankly can't capture it in the same exact way, it's too fast paced, too nuanced. The art style is much harder to translate to animation too, and ends up with these sort of results:

Kobeni ends up being much more round, with a fatter neck and rounder cheeks, thicker fuller less greasy hair, less disheveled, less.... everything that makes kobeni kobeni. and it's not exactly the animes fault, despite them making some choices i don't exactly understand. Her hair for example is much easier to look greasy and stringy if you're using hard blacks, but if you're coloring and shading with extremely thin lines, like the anime decided to, it's much harder to get that "stringy" look across withoiut it being deemed 'too unattractive' and there for not removed entirely. Heres another example

The expressions just don't translate. They've been too cutsie-ified, likely because a lot of the expressions in chainsaw man are hard to read, unpleasant to look at, and not very relatable, and they're fucking hard to animate i'm sure! But i think it deeply deeply damages the entire tone of the story; Chainsaw man is dramatic, it is, it's serious and dark, but the anime, likely due to the art direction, takes its self so so so seriously. I couldn't put a finger on why, but it's because they removed all of the vocal jokes, anything that would come off as goofy or non serious, Denji says in this very shadow the hedgehoggy weird serious boy voice. And I thought, thats okay, there isn't TOO much of that in the manga, and Denji frankly is a very sad character, i could dig this interpretation of him. Less silly, more serious, like he is at the end of the first series and the begining of the continuation.... but then I realized they removed ALL of the comedy, or at least a big chunk of it, and I couldn't figure out why? Why would they do that?

And then I realized it's the art style. There's no more silly expressions, or physical humor. The scene with Kobeni being called a monkey?

It's a joke. It's physical comedy, like a cartoon, it's absurdist humor because of Kobenis facial expressions, her generally disinterested and failgirl posture, the fact that the Kobeni we've known up until then was fucking pathetic as shit. And then she starts pulling this out of nowhere? That's the joke. That's what makes the monkey comment funny. But the issue is, the scene is so serious. It's so fast paced to try and get the effect the comic is going for, but i think it falls flat on its face. That was supposed to be a small comedic relief moment in a relatively serious scene, but without that physical humor, and with the line read of the "what is she, a monkey?!" line, he says it so seriously, there isn't any shock in his voice. It's more of a statement than anything. And without any of that- added without any of the verbal humor (other than power, but I have things to say about her in a different post) the entire anime feels so empty compared to the manga.

They're changing the chainsaw man director, for presumably, what I assume are these issues, especially the fact that a lot of the humor is just seemingly absent from the series. But I think an anime of chainsaw man is doomed to always be inferior, due to the fact that it is simply just not a series that works well for animation. The end bumpers are BEAUTIFUL, i think they perfectly encapture the feeling of chainsaw man, but i think thats the most you can do with animation. I don't think you can TELL the story of chainsaw man without Fujimotos art style, specifically his physical comedy and gags.

Adrienn Banai: The Rat Lover

I didn't want to post about any of this, but this person forced my hand.

I can't let this person run around on this hellsite anymore.

For those not in the know, this person harasses artists into drawing their husbando: a rat character named "Grey" from the children's series "Larva Island". They also force people to draw Grey's grandpa, a female version of Grey named "Greyless", Grey wearing Roxanne's dress from "A Goofy Movie", and plenty of parodies of the opening scene of said movie. Like, they subjected one person to draw that same sequence with different characters like 6-7 times. And the "best" part? They steal the poor victim's art to claim it as their own. And sometimes, they create edits of them WITHOUT CREDITING THE ORIGINAL ARTISTS.

This person is weird as all hell; they ship this rat with Pibby (a character that is canonically from a preschool show), Meilin Lee (A hecking 13 year old girl), and Adrienn themselves. Turning Red, anything Disney related (Goofy mostly), Steven Universe, Made in Abyss and, most importantly, Larva.

They have a few on reddit, a few on wikia, one on vimeo, and one on behance, of all places. They have a long history of harassing users, especially on reddit and wikia. They have the most accounts on Tumblr, with five (two of them are inactive.) The second biggest is wikia, with four. Oh, but it gets better. They have uncensored nsfw content on two tumblrs. This is from one of their accounts. I am not going to show you the image, but I'm going to show you the tags:

Is it a fetish? The Goofy Nightmare stuff probably. Mostly because it involves transformation. They're also obsessed with body horror and gore, as well as some other stuff that tumblr would probably throw the ban hammer at. (Please don't make me explain that stuff. It's creepy as all hell.) The rat isn't the only character they're obsessed with. They're also obsessed with the Cat Thieves from Courage and Roxanne from "A Goofy Movie".

And is it a language barrier thing or they just don't care? It's both. English is not their first language, obviously. I'm guessing they might also be autistic, which, after looking through their deviantart accounts, seems to be the case.

・I kinda feel like one of the other characters would have a crush on you and the boys would tease them for it, but you handle it with gentleness. Newt is a tiny bit jealous, but knows that you’re a very likeable person

・Always make sure that Newt’s leg is okay. Some days it plays up, and it hurts really bad. It means a lot to him when you help him out, and get things to help with the pain

There would most definitely be stray animals in the world during this time. Some have survived and have no owners. I can see you two adopting as many as you can, taking in strays and making sure they have enough food and water. But one particularly stole your heart, with her light brown fur and big nose.

Built a 100% homemade Gamzee Makara cosplay for Halloween this year and I'm happy to report my mother was apparently quite upset I wound up going to the grocery store like this :o)

rip to all the spooky Gamzee fans but I literally could not stop smiling for more than 2 seconds with how well this came out so goofy gumbo is what you get, cry about it.

The Pants

Thanks to YouTube the pants weren't that hard to figure out, but actually making them was the frustrating part as motivation was hard to come by and goddamn getting all those spots on the pants was a pain in my collective ass. They came out really soft and cozy though so I'm using them as pj pants forever now lamo

The Horns

they went through like 3 different prototypes over 4 months. The first ones were about the length of my forearm and made from model magic. You can probably guess what went wrong with those, they were way too bendy with no internal supports and being that long they were a pain to move in as they knocked into everything. After that I tried making some out of paper mache but those wound up looking cruddy and being heavy as all getout so the final attempt was just the same model magic horns at about half the previous length and they worked amazingly as you can see.

The Shirt

The shirt is just a craft store tshirt with fabric paint so that was no sweat but waiting for the paint to dry and adding all the layers took a non negligible amount of time also I've been staring at @starsnores art waaaaay to much lately so I took some scissors to around the collar bc I like the visual storytelling that Gumboat can't put on his shirts without putting holes through em.

The Wig

It's a spirit halloween wig called 'creepy man' or smth I had to cut it to be much shorter and try my hand at styling curls into it which went much better than I thought it would considering it was my first time, but pro tip: Check what strength of hairspray you're buying apparently there's different strengths ranging from loose hold to basically a stone seal.

Final Thoughts/Extras

if/when I end up putting all this on again I'm deffie using regular facepaint instead of the biblically accurate greasepaint, I don't think it came out any better, and good lord is greasepaint just the worst to have on your face for super long.

overall this taught me alot about cosplaying tolls and I'm looking forward to my next build :oD [probbie either going to be sollux or an oc so look out for that ig]
