Im gonna call it here, my bet for Mahiru's 2nd trial is that she's gonna be wanted to be voted guilty because she believes her feelings of loving others are uncontrollable, and therefore just wants to die in order to protect others from herself. That character development would mirror Shidou who know wants to be innocent to protect others now
