For some reason I got it in my mind, the idea of Martin getting sick. Just like a common cold, but he’s never really had one before. It all of his years, can you believe?! Do vampires even get sick? Well he did, and you were adamant on getting him back to tip top shape.
There was this old geranium that you had back when you were around ten. You picked it out at a market when your mum told you you could pick out whatever plant that you wanted. Shrunken with wilting leaves, you instantly grabbed the pot, placing it in the basket.
“This one? Honey-- are you sure... look, he’s already starting to wilt.”
“That’s Why I’m taking him! I’m going to help him get better!”
With a sigh, your mom places the small pot at the front of the basket. Away from all the other items insuring it wouldn’t get further damaged.
You sat with that thing for hours, perched at the window sill as it soaked up the sun. You watered it religiously even asking your parents for plant food. It couldn’t die, not on your watch. Especially when you were showering it with so much love.
He managed to live through two winters before finally kicking the pot. it bloomed wonderfully through the summer, you went through several pots during that span.
~
You knew something was off the moment that you answered the door. It was late December, and Martin managed to walk to your house again, only dressed in a light jacket. He sneezed the moment you opened the door, stifling the blow with his elbow.
“Martin.. wheres your coat? Did you walk here in that?!”
He offers a small shrug.
As you usher him inside, the two of you start to talk. Apparently Cuda had him shovel the entire driveway a few nights ago/ Not only the driveway, the entrance to the house. The whole ordeal must have took over two hours. He just woke up this morning feeling a bit off. His throat felt really weird. It was hard to swallow water, he couldn’t really eat breakfast. His entire body was really sore.
“Oh my gosh Martin you’re sick!”
“What?!” He instantly starts to panic.
“I mean you sick...like you have a cold!”
“I’m not cold, I’m really burning up..”
“Okay thats it...lets get you upstairs.”
~
Later that evening you mustered up the courage to stand at Cuda’s door. By mustered up, it really meant resisted to punch the old man straight in the mouth on sight.
The second he swings open the door--
“Martin is gonna be staying with me for a few days... he’s sick”
His eyes narrow incredulously. “And just who are you?”
You offer your last name only, informing him that Martin knew you from the bike shop.
With a promise to take Martin off his hands for a few days he was sold. His overnight bag was packed, he clung to your side along the short walk to your apartment. you couldn’t get there soon enough, the bed was already made.
~~~
Head cannons for taking care of a sickly little bat...🦇
Hydration- You make sure to bring him up a glass of water and orange juice. You knew him, he didn’t drink enough water as it is, but in his compromised state, it was important! “Here, drink this”
“I-I can’t it hurts...”
“I know, darling, but you have to drink! It will flush it all out of your system.”
After some coaxing, and several kisses to his forehead, he’d begrudgingly oblige.You could see him wince as he’s swallow the water, he looked as if it wanted to make him gag. When it got to the orange juice it was a little bit better. He’d nurse it in small sips.
Chills- You never got sick, not ever. That was another reason why you were completely unphased about taking care of him. Maybe it was something in your genes, but you were never sick a day in your life.He would start to shiver in the middle of a sentence. Knuckles bright white as he grasps the sheets. You would move to lay with him, embracing him from behind until the shivers start to cease.
Body aches- He barely wanted to leave your bed, or at the very least turn over. It just hurts “Everything hurts y/n”  You’d gently  assist in helping him over to his side. Drawing the covers up towards his ears. “I could give you some tylenol?”
“N-no pills..”
After a few hours he would have to force himself out of bed to use the washroom. Little did he know, you had already drawn him a bath. He could smell the warm scent of lavender and eucalyptus the moment he enters the room. The suds look so warm and inviting. Slowly he would strip.Skin still over sensitive as he immerses himself in the water. It takes a few moments to adjust but soon enough the ever present ache begins to cease.
Massage- It was around day three that Martin starts to feel a bit more like himself. He accepts all the water and juice that you bring. The soup was even better, He began to regain just a bit of his taste. His body was still so stiff and sore.the fact that he was practically bedridden didn’t help. His bones ached, lower back was stiff. Shoulders in knots from shivering. You quietly entered the room with a small bottle in your hand. “ I was just going to give you a quick massage just for circulation. Is that okay? Or--”
“Th-thats fine.”
You take your time as you work him over, his pajama top laid neatly folded beside him. Nimble fingers working over every knot, noting how the tension seems to dissipate by the moment. It wasn’t long that you could hear him snoring lightly, you couldn’t help but smile to yourself. Carefully, you slip his shirt back over his arms, pulling the comforter up gently towards his neck.
Healing- It was after about the fifth day that he started to feel more like himself. The second he awoke, it no longer felt like there were weights tethering his limbs to the bed. His body didn’t ache, he could sorta breathe out his nose. When he awoke it was about five thirty in the morning, you were resting peacefully next to him. Hand clenched into a half fist, resting against the pillow between you. He takes a moment to press his lips against your knuckles before quickly wiping the action away. He couldn’t bear the thought of getting you sick. He reaches for the half empty glass on the counter, you would be so happy to see that he’d finished it all.
Repercussions- He sat at the breakfast table, anxiously twiddling his thumbs, You refused to let him help, and it was starting to get to him... he needed to do something. The second you awoke and he said that he was hungry, you seemed completely overjoyed. He actually wanted to eat something, he was getting better. You nearly leapt out of bed.
As you flittered about the kitchen, he couldn't help but notice your occasional  sneeze. Stifled by the crook of your elbow, you’d quickly head over to wash your hands. You would clear your throat occasionally, once again stifling another cough.
“So anyways, I tell her the bike bits have been ordered--they’re coming in on the next truck. Once we get em I canpffahhhchoo-- “
You raise your elbow to your nose again, the force of your sneeze nearly sends you toppling forward.
“Geeze! Goddamn dust... ”
“Y/n... are you okay?
“Of course, two eggs or three?” You ask as you once again step over to the sink to wash your hands.
Slowly he rises from his seat walking over to join you at the stove.”Three. Here, I’ll help” He gently takes the spatula from your hand, stirring the eggs from behind you.He can feel you start to lean into him, the familiar grasp he has around your waist. “Martin.. you’re s-so atchooo”
Your face was pointed towards the trash, far away from the sink
“What the hell?”
“I’m sorry...” He whispers as he places a kiss against your temple.
“Sorry for wh-whay-whayyyatchoo”
“I’m sorry I got you sick..” He whispers placing a kiss against your neck. Reaching forward he turns the burners off, shoveling the majority of the eggs onto your plate.
“Sick? Im never sick--”
the force of your sneeze nearly sends you backwards.
“oh god...O- oh God?!”
His arms wrap around you securely as his lips move to rest on your temple.
“I’m going to take care of you for a while..”
Is there a plant that you hate and why
coleuses. im not one for like, gardening, and i’m actually terrible at actually taking care of plants, but back in high school i started getting my foot in the door for botany by volunteering/working at greenhouses, including the community greenhouse where my hometown grew all the ornamentals to be planted in pots along the streets/for general public landscaping purposes. volunteering with me for said greenhouse were a bunch of old ladies who would just come by to hang out and plant stuff. i swear to god they knew the names and cultivars of all the plants we had there, and they loved the coleuses. ‘theyre such a splash of green’ they would say. ‘they’re so pretty’. people would come in for community sales and the coleuses would sell like hot cakes. ‘theyre so beautiful’ everyone would say. little did they know that i was the one spending three hours a day in the mornings watering four greenhouses worth of plants and the coleuses were the bane of my existence because they would form these absolutely impenetrable bulletproof mats with each other, so i couldn’t see through the leaves if i had the pots filled until water was flooding the entire flat and spilling over the sides. i would go in there with my long sprayer pole thing with my tank top and headphones on hoping to god that i didn’t turn the entire city and 15 elderly women against me by accidentally overwatering the precious uwu coleuses that can do no fucking wrong. i walk around greenhouses now and they’re in every goddamn pre-planted flower arrangement ever to exist and people just love them. ‘oh theyre so pretty and green uwu’. ‘they just add such a splash of color to the pot’. ‘look this one has little red stripes on the leaves’. i am convinced the flower arrangement designers for proven winners are sitting there in the little design rooms in the corporate plant headquarters in california like ‘oh benjamin please do add another coleus to the new collection’ and everyone just goes absolutely feral like ‘oh my god that’s genius let’s add a coleus, should we add the efferecent princess nuclear yellow daisy cultivar or the red tiara taco bell baja blast cultivar???’.  its been 3 years now since the summer i had to water 500 plugs of coleuses on a daily basis and i still hold this personal vendetta against them, like they aren’t even an objectively ‘terrible’ plant but it’s gotten to the point where i will immediately loathe a flower arrangement based on the presence of a coleus alone. we had to dissect coleuses in plant anatomy a couple weeks ago and i had to swallow my rage to even confront them on a cutting board. i see a coleus and i immediately want to die
Gravity (Bakugou x OC)
Part 1: A Huntress stalks the night
Bakugou x Vigilante!OC
Warnings: angst, explicit language, violence
Word count: 2143
Genre: enemies to lovers ; angst ; romance
When a new student makes an entrance, Bakugou has a real bad feeling. There is something about this girl that just doesnt feel right. From the flaming hair to the calculating glint in her green eyes, everything about her just pisses him off.
Little does he know that his fate is intertwined with the person he despises so much, defining his future path in a way he would have never expected.
Tumblr media
“Hostage Situation: six civilians inside, one with the criminal on the roof at gunpoint, all of them women.”
Katsuki looked up into the night sky, eyeing the small figures on the rooftop. The criminal was standing close to the edge, pressing a gun against the temple of the hostage in his arms. It was quite high up, and the building was old, so Katsuki would have to be careful going in. One wrong explosion and the whole thing could come down, burying heroes, villains and civilians all the same. He had to admit, the criminal was smart.
“Ground Zero?”
The voice of the police officer with his tablet at hand snapped him out of his thought.
“I know the goddamn situation,” he growled, and dedicated his attention back to the victim. He’d need backup for this one, despite how much he hated it. Usually he worked alone, his quirk versatile enough to ensure success. But this was different. Green lightning hit the ground next to him and made people around him gasp and jump aside.
“Seems like they were counting on you to show up here, Ka-chan,” Deku said, straightening after his landing and clapping his childhood friend on the back. “Got your call. What’s the plan?”
There had been times when the familiarity Deku treated him with had made him go off in a rage. But now he was older and knew damn well even he needed support at times.
“Seven victims. One piece of shit with a gun holding a hostage on the roof. Rickety building,” he grumbled, crossing his arms. He’d love to just blow this vermin to bits and be done with it. But it wasn’t that kind of day.
“Fuckin’ bastards.”
“Hmm. So, we have to be careful going inside. The building could-”
“I fucking know that. That’s why you’re here, for fuck’s sake,” Katsuki snapped. “You go inside and look after the women. I’ll take care of the vermin on the roof.”
Not being in the mood for quite so many words, he stomped off. Deku knew how to work with him, so there was no need to talk strategy.
Heavy rain drummed on the asphalt, soaking Katsuki to the bone. A shiver ran over his skin as he checked where best to enter and get on top of the building, the big full moon illuminating his way. He’d worked these streets as a hero ten fucking years now. It was becoming increasingly hard to be surprised at the cruelty and oftentimes stupidity of criminals and villains, putting civilians in danger or causing chaos in his city.
Soon, he found the back entrance of the neighbouring building. It was a little shorter than the one he was trying to get on top of, but he figured he could just blast himself up there with a well-planted explosion. Quickly, he strode up the staircase of the abandoned building, taking two or three steps at a time.
He had every reason to hurry. Criminals like this never had good nerves, especially those who held innocent people at gunpoint, and as soon as Deku started doing his thing inside, the man on top would surely be alarmed.
From outside he heard screams and the sound of guns going off. Speak of the devil…
“Shit! Fucking awesome,” he hissed and quickened his step, sprinting up the last flight of stars before throwing himself against the metal door of the roof.
The moment he stepped outside, raindrops drummed down on him like hail, the wind up here turning the water droplets almost into shards of ice. Not that he was able to feel much cold.
Katsuki let out a curse and rushed to the edge of the building. Down on the ground, he could make out some of his fellow colleagues having it out with a group of villains that had emerged from the shadows. They would be okay, he knew that. His attention returned to the man standing alone in the moonlight.
They weren’t too far apart, so his calculations had been spot on. But he couldn’t just blast up there if he didn’t want to risk the life of the sobbing woman with the gun to her head.
Shit. Great. Because he was so good with negotiating.
“You better let her go, you shitfaced bastard!” he roared up through the heavy rain. “You know damn well I’ll blast you to shit if you hurt her.”
“Fuck you!” the criminal shouted back in a high pitched voice. ”You won’t do shit! Number two hero, my ass. You can’t do nuthin’ ‘cause you can’t have her dead!”
Growling a string of curses Katsuki desperately tried to come up with a way to get up to the building without endangering the victim so he could beat the ever living shit out of that arsehole.
“Ka-chan! What’s the situation?”
The voice coming out of the communication device in his ear made him flinch.
“That fucker has the woman too close to the edge,” said Katsuki. “I’m gonna blast up there and kick him in the face before he can actually shoot. Can you create a distraction inside?”
“Uhh.” The sound of shots being fired “I’ll do my best but im under fire! Give me a minute.”
“We don’t have a fucking minute, Deku!”
This was why he worked alone. Usually. This bullshit was ripping his nerves to shreds.
“Just do it, Deku! Make yourself fucking useful and stop playing,” Bakugou hissed into the device.
“You fucking heroes think you can do whatever you want. I’ll show you! I’ll take this bitch with me before I die!” came another shriek from the upper roof. This dude really was pushing his luck.
Through the strong rain, Katsuki watched as the burly man dragged the helpless woman closer towards the edge. Was he going to throw her off?
His body moved quickly, getting ready to either blast up there or somehow catch the falling woman.
“You better not fucking move! I’ll rip you to shreds and feed you your own shi-”
Katsuki heard something slice through air and rain like an arrow, followed by a wet thud. The world fell quiet, as if time were standing still.
Katsuki’s blood grew cold. An ice arrow had lodged itself right between the criminal’s eyes. The burly man staggered, one step, then another, dropping the weapon he had been holding. Then he fell, and with him the woman.
“Fuck!”
Katsuki flung himself into the air, the explosion of his quirk giving him the needed momentum. He grabbed the falling woman in midair, wrapping his arms around her before the two of them hit the window of the opposite building. Glass shattered and sliced Katsuki’s exposed skin as he rolled over the floor, trying not to break any of his or the woman’s bones.
“Ka-chan!” Deku’s voice sounded relieved and shocked at the same time. “What happ-”
Katsuki had no time to reply. The assassin was still out there. He knew she was. Why the fuck was she here again? He should have known better. She always got involved in shit like this.
“Take her outside!” he barked, and thrust the woman he’d just saved into his friend’s arms. “It’s her! She shot the bastard.”
Realisation dawned on Deku’s face and he turned pale. Without a word, he picked up the sobbing but apparently unharmed woman and rushed downstairs while Bakugou flung himself out of the window again. It only took a few blasts for him to get to the top of the building.
“Where are you?” he yelled into the dark. It had to be her. He knew it was her. Only one person took out villains with that kind of technique. Arrows of ice - her one signature, because they never left any traces once melted. “Show yourself!”
“No need to yell. I’m right here, Katsuki.”
A chill ran down Katsuki’s spine. He’d recognize that voice anywhere. It had been haunting his dreams for so many years now. The slight drawl to his name, the accent forming around Japanese words.
He turned to face the assassin.
There she was, untamed red hair glowing in the moonlight like a flame, her small frame outlined by the full moon. The Huntress vigilante that stalked the night.
“Artemis,” he said. His voice sounded rough.
Something painful stirred in his chest and he cursed himself.
She still had the water bow that her quirk had allowed her to form in her hand. Green eyes gleamed at him through the black mask that covered half of her face. There was a softness to them, something he knew she held only for him.
“It’s been a while,” she said, a small smile tugging at the corners of her lips.
“Don’t give me that shit,” he hissed, his heart clenching in his chest. How many times had she spoiled his cases this way? Killing without mercy and leaving no traces behind. But he knew her. The way she moved, talked, even her scent was something he could pick out of a thousand people.
She shrugged and the bow in her hand disintegrated.
“You’re welcome, by the way. If I hadn’t shot him, I wonder what would’ve happened next. Would you have blown him off the roof? Flung yourself at him and gotten her shot? Or would you have waited for him to shoot her and then blow him up?” she purred with feigned disinterest. “Either way, there would have been a sacrifice… What great Hero work.”
“Oh, but shooting him in the face and making him drop her is better?” he growled.
“I think I’ve calculated quite well though,” she replied. “I mean, you did catch her, no?”
A deep growl rumbled in Katsuki’s chest.
“Stop playing games, Artemis! This needs to stop. Soon I won’t be able to keep them from putting a fucking bounty on your head! Then every Hero and their grandma will be on your arse.”
“Ah yes, the ever so dangerous hero grandma. How frightful,” she chuckled.
"You think this is a joke? You want to fucking die?”
Artemis’ face fell into a cool mask. “I don’t need your help. Like any of you was ever able to catch me. Don’t waste your time with things that don’t concern you, Ground Zero.”
Bakugou cursed again. How many times had he had this conversation with her? Why wouldn’t she just listen? What was all this for?
“Artemis.” He spoke her name as a plea. Ten years. Ten years of running after her. Trying to understand her. Trying to get her back.
“Ka-chan!” Deku’s voice echoed through the night, followed by green lightning as the current number one hero landed next to him on the roof. Deku had visible scratches on his skin and bruises that were about to form, but Bakugou couldn’t bring himself to take away his gaze from the woman standing in front of him.
“Hello, Izuku. Fancy meeting you here,” Artemis said as if greeting an old friend. “You’ve certainly looked better if I remember right. Have the men inside pushed you a little far? You’re getting soft.”
Deku’s green eyes widened as he met the eyes of the assassin.
“No, I held back so I wouldn’t injure anyone beyond repair.” Delu spoke calmly, but there was a rare hint of steel in his voice.
Artemis shrugged before taking a step back towards the edge of the roof.
“Dont you dare think about fucking off like this!” Katsuki growled. “You stay right where you are.”
“Or what?” Artemis’ smirk sent a shiver down his spine. She was toying with him.
“Why are you doing this, Artemis?” Deku asked.
“I have my reasons,” Artemis replied with ice in her voice. “No need for you to worry your pretty little head with it.”
She took another step back, then another.
Moving at the same time, the heroes stepped forward, but the huntress held out a hand.
“Ah, I wouldn’t.” She held up a warning finger. “Before you act, I’d like you to remind you that it’s raining. Which means you’re outmatched.”
She was right. She was so right and Katsuki hated it. In an earnest fight, he could have overpowered her, but if she was just trying to make a run for it, her quirk would undoubtedly give her the advantage in this situation. Bakugou knew that. He’d seen it happen so many goddamn times.
“Well then, gentlemen. I bid you farewell,” she said, and pulled up her hood. “Stop searching for me, Katsuki. You won’t like what you find.”
With that, she flung herself backwards off the roof.
“No!” A scream ripped from Katsuki’s lungs as he rushed forward, trying to get a hold of her, but she slipped through his fingers like water and disappeared into the night.
He’d failed again. How many times more?
Abraham - A RDR2 Fanfic
Tumblr media
Fanfic summary [NO SPOILERS]: Lyle Morgan and his eleven-year-old son have a conversation about Beatrice’s death, only for the boy to witness a second one.
Warning(s): Mild language
Author’s note: Bear with me if not everything in this story is correct. I’m not entirely sure where Arthur’s originally from (all I’ve heard is that he’s from somewhere in the north), so I just made something up lol. Also, this fic will only be one part. Anyway, hope you enjoy :)
From Lyle’s POV
A FOREST SOMEWHERE IN MONTANA
SUMMER, 1874
Strollin’ through the tall, thick grass, I led my mount around the forest at a casual pace while my son sat on top, consumed by his journal as always. It was an hour or two before midday, and right now, there was a radiant blanket o’ sunshine bathing the entire forest, painting everything with a golden tint. It was beautiful, and I wanted nothing more than to spend the rest of the day out here...but this feeling of annoyance just wouldn’t stop naggin’ me, and I knew exactly why.
I briefly glanced over my shoulder, peering at my son as he scribbled something down in the weathered pages of his journal.
A quick sigh escaped me.
I didn’t know who the hell Arthur got his interest in art from, or why Beatrice even bothered buying him that book, but that child just couldn’t seem to take his eyes away from it. Every time I came across the boy, he was always scratchin’ down some fantasy world of his, or creating images of a utopia I ain’t ever seen. It was pointless.
He spent more time daydreamin’ in that book than he did playing outside, or hunting, or fishing -- hell, he didn’t even know how to read -- and yet, Beatrice seemed perfectly content with it.
Or at least...she did.
Beatrice weren’t around no more. She was killed by bandits a few months ago. Robbed. Left on the side o’ the road for the crows to feed on. But Arthur didn’t know that. Sheriff told him it was a wild animal that took her. A wolf, to be exact. And he believed him.
I dragged a hand down my face, suddenly feelin’ exhausted just thinking about it.
Had I done the right thing, not tellin’ Arthur the truth about his own mother’s death, I wondered? I figured the kid didn’t need to know the morbid details, or even the entire truth, but I still felt like a piece of shit for not revealing the full story -- especially considering that them bandits who killed Beatrice...killed her ‘cause of me.
I had stolen something from them. Somethin’ valuable. And before it fell into their dirty hands, that “something” apparently belonged to a rich plantation owner who really wanted it back. Ended up gettin’ one of the bandits hanged, and left them thirsty for revenge. But they didn’t have the strength to go after the plantation owner. So, they came after me instead.
They chased me for quite a while. They chased me across the mountains, across the swamps, across the goddamned snow...until finally, they came to their senses and realized there were much better, more convenient ways of hurtin’ me. And thus, their paths diverted to my wife and son.
Those bastards managed to corner her while she was ridin’ to town to do some shopping. Found her on some secluded road between here and the nearest settlement, and ensured she would never return. That was when Arthur went lookin’ for help to find his missing mother hours later, and the sheriff assured him a wolf had gotten to Beatrice.
Christ. I really was a terrible father, weren’t I? Not only did I pay more attention to a bottle o’ whiskey than my own wife, I had also neglected Arthur for years on end, and indirectly gotten his mother killed. And the boy was only eleven.
He had spent half of his life not knowing a damned thing about where his daddy was, or even what he did, only to lose the one parent he already had before he could find out.
Lord...there had to be some way to make this up to him.
I looked back at the boy, suddenly feeling an urge to say something -- anything -- to him.
“Arthur,” I called out, catching the kid’s attention as his head perked up from behind the journal’s pages, “put that damned book away for a moment, will you?”
The boy hurriedly marked his place in the journal with a pen and shut it closed, resting the object on the saddle’s surface as he hung his head low in shame.
“...Sorry, sir.” He murmured.
I shook my head, lettin’ out a concerned breath.
“You spend far too much time in that journal. It was a mistake to buy it.”
Arthur’s eyes wandered to the trees towering around us.
“I’m sorry, dad,” he apologized timidly. “But I like drawing.”
I scoffed. “Yeah? Well, I like Poker. But I ain’t got time to play it. Too busy worryin’ about survival, and keeping the both of us fed. You can’t always do what you want, Arthur. You gotta provide. Things like drawing, gambling...they’re frivolous. We got better things to worry about.”
The child quirked a brow. “Friv-uh-less...? What’s that mean?”
“It means we don’t need to do it,” I explained. “What we do need, however, is to eat. So put that journal away and keep an eye out for deer. You was the one who suggested we come out here in the first place.”
Arthur frowned in a discouraged manner. “Yes, sir.”
I gave him a stern nod. “Good boy. Now...you said you seen a big buck out here?”
The boy pointed ahead. “Yeah. It was by the river.”
I gave the reins a little tug, urging my horse to follow me. “Then that’s where we’ll start. C’mon, Boadicea.”
Continuing our little hunting trip, Arthur and I traveled deeper into the lively woods as creatures of all types scurried around us, rustling blades of grass and alerting the tiny insects that hovered above the plants.
There was a rather peaceful mood to the forest today -- a welcome change considerin’ how chaotic my life usually was -- and I had to admit: some part of me enjoyed being here with Arthur. I rarely ever got to see the boy because of my work as an outlaw, and when I did, he always seemed reluctant to leave the house. Whether that was because he was more of an indoors person, or simply ‘cause he weren’t eager to spend time with me -- I didn’t know. But it was good to be with him regardless.
Approaching the large river, I came to a temporary halt as I crouched down and examined the ground, carefully searchin’ for any tracks that could’ve possibly led us to the buck.
The area here appeared undisturbed -- save for the fish flopping in and out of the babbling water -- and as far as I could tell, there weren’t no deer running around this section of the forest. Not at the moment, anyway. Maybe they were at a different part of the river.
I took a closer look at the grass, only to be torn away from my thoughts when Arthur raised a question.
“Dad?” He asked softly. “Can I...can I ask you something? About momma?”
I paused, thrown off-guard by the sudden change in tone.
“Momma?” I repeated, slowly turning towards the boy. “Why you wanna talk about her?”
Arthur’s expression sank with sorrow.
“It’s just...you knew her better than I did. Or longer, I guess. And I don’t remember her that good. ...Do you?”
I gazed at him in a puzzled manner, admittedly still a bit taken aback by the abrupt question.
“...Clear as day,” I replied, unwilling to sift through the painful memories. “But that don’t matter. She’s...she ain’t coming back, Arthur. No one does, once they die. Ain’t no point in lingerin’ in the past when it can only haunt you. All we can do is move on. You understand?”
Clearly a bit hurt by my response, Arthur dropped the subject and averted his eyes from me, peering over at a nearby gathering of flowers instead.
He slouched despondently. “...I understand.”
That wasn’t good enough for me. I took a step towards him.
“Look at me when you say that, Arthur,” I demanded. “It’s important you look people in the eye when you speak to them.”
The boy brought his line of sight back to me, his face veiled behind a very subtle layer of fear.
He straightened his back a bit. “I understand.”
I nodded in approval. “Good. Now...let’s get back to huntin’ this buck. You sure it was around the river?”
Arthur gazed around. “I saw it this morning when I was playing with Copper,” he confirmed. “It was drinkin’ water right here. That’s when I came to get you.”
I observed the dirt underneath me, squinting my eyes as I searched for clues. The grass in these parts was quite thick, so that made it even tougher to spot fur, or dung -- and I still didn’t see any deer tracks -- but it certainly looked like another animal had been around here.
I kneeled down, shuffling the grass outta the way with my hand.
“It looks like some wild horses might’ve passed through this area,” I examined. “But no sign of deer. Oh, well...the day is still young, and we have some time, so we’ll keep looking.” I gestured to a nearby bridge. “Let’s try over there.”
Grabbing my horse’s reins, I continued to guide it through the woods as Arthur scouted the area for me, his big blue eyes scanning the sharp horizon while the sun escalated in the sky. There was a certain determination in his temperament now, and the longer we carried on trying to locate this buck, the more my son seemed to be enjoying himself.
Perhaps there was hope for us, after all.
“...Dad?” The boy called again, making me flick my eyes to the side. “What if there are wolves out here?”
I encouraged him to stay calm. “Now, don’t you go worryin’ about that. If we see wolves out here, we’ll be fine. We’re armed, we’re fast, and we’re smart.”
Arthur wasn’t convinced. “...Momma was smart.”
I sighed in a melancholic tone at that. “Yes...she was. But...Momma was killed by a different type of wolf.”
He tilted his head in a puzzled manner. “What d’you mean?”
I gestured to my rifle. “Not all wolves are the same, Arthur. Some use their teeth, some use their guns, and some use their tongue. You gotta be able to identify them when you see ‘em.”
The kid didn’t say it flat out, but I could tell he knew what I was really talkin’ about.
“Those sound more like people.” He replied. I let out a gentle chuckle.
“People can be worse than wolves, Arthur. In fact, I’d prefer a wolf over some o’ the people I’ve met.”
Arthur leaned forward in the saddle, his body swaying along with Boadicea’s steady speed.
“What kinda people have you met?”
I lowered my voice, thinking back to the bandits who killed Beatrice.
“Killers. Thieves. Deceivers. Men who will constantly betray each other even though they share the same motive: greed.”
I turned to Arthur with a remorseful look, hopin’ to do at least one right thing in my life, and use myself as a cautionary tale that money weren’t as clean as it seemed.
“...Greed,” I told him, “it breaks people, Arthur. They may not realize it, ‘cause greed can get you far in this world...but the reward ain’t worth it. Not compared to the things you have to sacrifice. In the end, you’ll have tons of cash, only to realize that there are luxuries not even millionaires can afford.”
His innocence took over. “Then why do they do it?”
That was a question I asked myself everyday. I shrugged in a disheartened fashion.
“Because they don’t care. So long as their pockets is heavy, and their bellies is full, they’ll keep on going. But like I said, greed poisons you. It kills you. And you won’t even notice until you’re already sittin’ in a grave. So promise me, Arthur, promise me that when you get to my age...you won’t become a wolf.”
Despite evidently bein’ a little confused, the child was able to make some sense of what I just said and agreed to the promise, reassuring me with a small smile.
“I promise.”
“Good boy,” I praised, bringing my mind back to the main reason we came out here. “Anyway, here’s the bridge. Why don’t you hop down and help me find this buck?”
“Okay.”
Sliding down the saddle, Arthur effortlessly climbed down and joined me, scurrying ‘round like a mouse while he searched for any signs of the buck. But so far, there was nothing in sight.
“See anything?” I checked. The boy shook his head.
I wiped some sweat off my brow, letting out a fatigued sigh. This animal was certainly proving to be a challenge to hunt down. We had already been in this forest for a couple hours now, and our efforts still hadn’t paid off. Part o’ me was almost starting to suspect if Arthur even saw a deer in the first place, and not some other kinda animal.
I decided to take a short break, and turned to ask the boy.
“You positive the buck was roamin’ around in these parts? Or that it was a buck at all? I haven’t seen any tracks so far.”
A soft rustle suddenly reached my ears, interrupting my conversation with Arthur as I reached for my gun, only to be stopped by a sound I didn’t expect.
It was a man’s voice.
“...Don’t even think about it,” the stranger warned, cocking his own gun. “I will shoot if necessary.”
Freezing at the intrusion, I remained perfectly still and didn’t utter a single word as a pair of footsteps steadily approached me from behind, followed by two more men coming in from the front on horseback.
They were all dressed in similar outfits donned with Nevada hats, and I couldn’t help but notice the star-shaped badges shimmerin’ blatantly on their chests.
Shit. These were lawmen. What the hell were they doin’ out here? I never expected the law to travel this far into the country. This was definitely odd.
What really puzzled me though, weren’t the fact that there were three lawmen just...waitin’ for us out here -- it was more the fact that Arthur didn’t seem phased by any of this in the slightest. Just what exactly was goin’ on?
Trotting closer to me, one of the mounted men glowered in my direction as he ordered his deputy to restrain me, his firm, steel eyes never wavering.
I recognized him instantly.
“...Sheriff Buchanan.” I muttered through gritted teeth.
He returned the greeting, scowling from under his hat’s rim.
“Lyle Morgan.”
I shrugged at him, unsure of what to make of the situation.
“What is this shit? What’s the sheriff doing all the way out here?”
Buchanan glanced at Arthur, standing in front of him in a protective manner.
“I told you I’d use every option I had to get you behind bars, Morgan...and I meant it. You made the choice not to heed my warning.”
Taking a second to process what he just told me, the realization suddenly hit me like a bullet to the gut as I stared at Arthur with a sense of immense betrayal, unable to believe what was happening.
There never was no goddamned buck.
Things was never gonna work out for me and Arthur.
This was all a trap.
My own...son...had turned me in.
He was the bait, and Buchanan was the true hunter.
I clenched my jaw in rage, doing my absolute best to shield my emotions as the deputy kicked me to my knees.
“...A-Arthur...?” I whispered, my voice trembling.
The boy looked me straight in the eye, standing adamantly beside Buchanan as his deputies tied me up. I threw a glare at the sheriff, damning him till my last moments.
“You bastard, Buchanan...!” I cursed. “You turned my own damned son against me...?!”
The man showed no guilt and tightened his grip on his rifle, silently advising me to stay back.
“No need,” Buchanan denied. “You drove him to me all by yourself.”
He placed a gentle hand on Arthur’s shoulder and guided him towards the second deputy, ordering them to bring him back to town.
“Clayton, bring the boy back to the office. We’ll figure out where to send him later. For now though, just keep him safe, and look after him.”
“Right away, Sheriff.”
Preparing both his horse and mine for departure, the deputy left Arthur next to the sheriff as the boy stood firmly in place, his innocent yet damaged gaze never leavin’ mine.
Despite the hint of remorse clouding the child’s eyes, it was pretty obvious Arthur felt he made the right decision in turning me in. And just as Buchanan’s second deputy started to drag me away, I couldn’t help but notice a beautiful Whitetail buck wanderin’ around in the distance, its majestic antlers standing out like a crown on a monarch’s head as it bathed in the golden sunlight.
The animal swayed its head in my direction, almost as if trying to communicate with me.
“I’m sorry, dad,” Arthur whispered as he walked towards Clayton, blocking the buck in the process. “...But you made me promise.”
Taking his leave, the boy finally mounted up and steadily trotted away from the scene, only to reveal an empty spot where the buck once stood as he left the forest.
Well...I may have found the buck like I planned, but it weren’t my job to kill it.
And it certainly weren’t my place to look for it.
I could hunt them down to my heart’s content, and kill ‘em all I wanted for my own desires...but in the end, they would always be able to afford the one luxury I’d never obtained.
Peace.
