Neighbor Next Door- Stephen Strange / Female OC

Summary: anna had always thought the doctor next door was attractive. and one interaction left her itching to get more of him.

Chapter 1: 60 Seconds, Only

"you put a halt to an entire party because a 40 year old man told you to turn it down a little bit?" sam raised a brow, shaking his head.

anna crinkled her nose and shook her head, "why did he and now you, bring his age into this?"

"because, you're acting ridiculous" sam rolled his eyes. "what do you think he's gonna do? fall in love with a 25 year old girl while he's married and also 15 years older than you?"

"look, i never said i wanna be with him" anna sighed. "i can't help that i like him. he's just so hot"

sam opened his mouth to talk but shut it right up. he couldn't argue with that. the man was definitely hot.

"all i'm saying is" anna continued. "i'd just like some attention once in a while"

"fuck no" sam protested immediately. "no way. he's married."

"i said some attention. like distant looks and whatnot. i'm not asking to fuck him."

"still no. emotional cheating."

"that's bullshit" anna rolled her eyes. "you've never had a crush on anyone else outside of a relationship?"

"never strong enough to act on it" sam countered. "it's in your best interest to drop it"

"who’s asking anyone to act on it? that’s my whole point. passive attention isn’t acting on it."

“still no.”

“okay, prude” anna rolled her eyes.

"don't make me say it" sam warned and anna playfully smacked his arm.

“call me a slut, i don’t care.”

"can't you find someone your own age?" sam asked as they made their way to the bookstore.

"what? like jeff passed out on my couch last night?" anna asked pointedly. "sure. because guys my age are just so delightful"

sam was running out of arguments so he just changed the topic. he knew anna wasn't a home wrecker so he decided not to stress on it too much. she hated cheaters. she also talked a lot of shit that she really didn't mean pretty much 99% of the time.

so, sam wished he'd continued trying to put pressure on anna to keep it in her pants because her slut o' meter was about to break anytime and sam blamed himself.

it all started when sam walked out of her room one day while they were hanging out, watching anna frantically undress and put on a pink skimpy swim suit and grab a spray bottle, spraying her hair and body.

"uh, are we doing a photoshoot?" he piped up, causing her to jump. "perhaps, pre-wetting ourselves for the beach?"

"ew" anna crinkled her nose. "no, shut up. we got strange and palmer's mail, im gonna go return it to them"

"and then go join them in their pool?" sam raised a brow.

"no". that was the only explanation anna provided as she checked herself out in the mirror, fixing her hair.

she knew she couldn't just show up in a bathing suit acting like this is just how she dressed. so instead, the sheen liquid on her hair and body was going to give the idea that she'd just come from the beach.

"this.. might be a bit too slutty to show up at their door" anna murmured to herself.

"ya think?" sam joked.

anna grabbed a long, sheer chiffon from the floor and put it on before grabbing the envelope. "that should do.”

"yeah, that definitely helps" sam responded sarcastically but his friend was out of the door before he even finished the sentence.

anna rang the bell without a second thought. she didn't quite feel nearly as confident as she looked.

but she'd learnt from a young age to fake it, and now it came a lot more naturally to her. except for maybe when an insanely charming neighbor was involved.

when the door opened, she was met with soft green eyes and a polite smile.

"oh hey there, ms. palmer" anna flashed a smile, a little sad it wasn't stephen that opened the door.

"hi" christine smiled, appearing a little confused.

"oh um, i got your mail by accident, i guess" she started as she handed her the mail.

"food's ready babe" anna heard a lower register come up from behind christine and she felt her stomach flip.

heat flushed her cheeks as he showed up behind christine, his eyes falling on anna.

"oh thanks, love" she smiled at stephen. "she was just dropping off our mail."

anna waved a quick hello at stephen.

to ensure this visit wasn't short lived, she added, "and im really sorry about the party last saturday night. i'll remember to keep it down more often. and uh, thanks for being so nice about it.”

stephen quickly scanned anna as he gazed between the two. quick enough for her to not have noticed. almost as if to compensate, he wrapped his arms around christine, smiling over at their neighbor. "no worries"

christine just smiled and nodded in response and anna figured it was time to get out.

"have a good day, you guys." she smiled and backed away. "see you around"

"thanks for the mail!" christine smiled before closing the door.

"wish i could go to the beach today" christine said as she put the envelope into a small tray with the others, deciding to open it later.

"i know" stephen cleared his throat as he set the table for breakfast. "but duty calls."

"sadly" she smiled as she slid into her seat. "thanks, love.”

stephen was still a little smitten from the little interaction he'd had with their neighbor.

he was always respectful of women and he really didn't want to think about why anna had showed up at their door... looking like that.

was it just in his head? was he just being a sexist dickhead? or did she definitely have some reason behind showing up like that, especially after how their interaction went last night?

either way, stephen was definitely slightly turned on. just slightly. no one could do it for him like christine did. and he knew that the moment he glanced over at christine and a soft smile grazed his lips.

the two did some lovemaking before they left and stephen could definitely admit to himself that he imagined it was his neighbor beneath him, just for a small minute.

60 seconds, only.

sam should have also said something when wanda came over to bake some cupcakes and anna offered to take them to their neighbour, under the pretence of her starting to learn how to bake.

but wanda didn't protest, and so sam decided maybe it wasn't a deal big enough for him to say anything.

besides, anna was dressed in a cute yellow sundress. she didn’t look like she was dressed for seduction.

anna didn't want christine to grow suspicious for everytime she showed up at their door looking like a slut. besides, she did not want to be a homewrecker or make christine feel uncomfortable. she just really wanted to see stephen but she barely ever got to see him.

however this time, it was stephen who was shirtless when he opened the door. and what's worse? his body was sheen with sweat.

heat flushed to anna’s face the moment the door swung open.

and her eyes shamelessly dropped to his chest, her mouth going dry at the sight before her.

"oh um hi, doctor" she spoke softly, forcing herself to meet his eyes.

he had a small smirk on his face. fuck, had he noticed anna’s demeanour change? was he... proud of himself?

anna shook off the thoughts. she was reading too much into it because she was so insanely infatuated.

stephen honestly wondered if anna ever wore a bra? every interaction that he's had with her so far, he’d always been able to, see things. it’s not like he was ogling all the time. they were just always…there.

he also shook away those thoughts. that was none of his business. and he was probably just being a jerk to ponder over that.

"hi, neighbour" he smiled and nodded. "how's your thursday going?"

"great!" anna smiled. “um, so i recently started baking. and uh, well, sam's always going on about how i need to stop being a hermit and socialize more so i decided to bring my neighbours some of the cupcakes i baked?"

totally innocent visit and here stephen was, thinking like a fucking perv. he nodded with a soft smile and reached out to grab the tray from her. "those smell incredible, thank you so much. christine loves cupcakes."

anna smiled, her heart beat picking up. "oh wait, um, do either of you have a nut allergy?"

she felt so stupid now for not having thought about it before.

"nope" stephen smiled. "we're pretty much clear when it comes to food allergies. got lucky that way"

anna chuckled softly and nodded. "you sure did. hope you enjoy the cupcakes!"

once they said goodbye, and stephen closed the door, he began to think about what it was that drew him to his neighbour.

sure, objectively, she was definitely hot.

but it was just the sheer confidence she radiated, that always really got him. he liked strong women. that's why he ended up with christine.

besides, she was always incredibly sweet.

stephen wasn't too bothered by his feelings of attraction though.

it was just a harmless crush. maybe not even that. just a harmless infatuation. that's all. that couldn't possibly be a crime, could it?

sam realized he'd really fucked up when him, wanda and anna ended up at a party that stephen was also present at. and he realized anna was downright flirting with him. and he knew he had to pull her away before she acted more and more like an idiot.

a/n: chapter one’s here!! guys!!!! i cannot fucking believe the positive reception this fic got from the prologue. i’m so excited that you all are also just as excited for this fic. chapters are gonna be getting longer and have more stuff happen so get excited!

also, i personally use the word slut as not a derogatory term, but as a simple word. i don’t see being slutty or being a slut as a flaw. which is why i use it so freely. but if that’s not for you, i acknowledge that.

i think im gonna try and make this a writing/oc blog- originally it was going to be ffxiv ocs specifically, but ive really gotten into other stuff since (bnha especially) and am not super into ffxiv at the moment so. we are winging this.

solkgeim hyrtfyrwyn (she/her)

smn main and war on the side. went sch for a bit but it didn't stick

post-endwalker, married to thancred and urianger

thancred and solkgeim had the most grueling slow burn in history. the key to the thangeim slow burn is the distance between them.

grew up on an orange orchard in la noscea. mother was a pirate and never home. doesn't know who her father is.

ingrid appleby (she/her & he/him)

drg/drk/mch main. cnj as well, but the elementals don't like him so no whm (until the endwalker tank quests)

just a little guy. who's been isekai'd twice.

ingrid was originally my custom summoner oc for fire emblem heroes, and i've just...wholesale ported him to ffxiv.

this version of ingrid is specifically from the doomed timeline seen in book 3 of fire emblem heroes. she died, was a ghost for a bit, helped her alternate self save the day, and faded away with lif and thrasir.

except she didn't. her soul, along with lif and thrasir's drifted through the veils of existence and found safe harbor on etheirys. hydaelyn revived all three of them, though ingrid wouldn't know why until endwalker. hydaelyn had been waiting for her friend for 14,000 years.

anyways! dealing with being a failed hero and desperately trying to prevent solkgeim from taking on too much and being crushed by the weight of duty.

gentle yarrow (she/her)

"rdm" but in actually is close to actually being half-blm, half-whm. still uses a rapier because i think its rad

comes from a tribe who lived in the sea of clouds, who descended from people who fled the flood of the sixth umbral calamity on griffinback, and found the sea of clouds. as they fled, they brought along whoever they could find- displaced mhachi and amdapori mages included.

yarrow's tribe holds knowledge of both blm and whm techniques, which yarrow has studied extensively.

when dalamud began to fall, people in her tribe slowly became tempered to it a la nael van darnus. yarrow was the only one immune. and given that there's no known cure for tempering at this point... yarrow was the one who had to put down the tempered.

every full moon was a nightmare for yarrow. when her tribe at last fled the sea of clouds, she was a pariah for the blood she had spilled, regardless of its necessity. so she left.

i need to research 1.0 a lot more but long story short she recognized nael's behavior as being tempered and considered it an extension of her duty to put nael down.

post-calamity, she joined the scions, having been part of minfilia's path of the twelve.

clara mistrun (she/her)

arcanist, something close to alphinaud's old class. not really a combatant most of the time, but she is a gifted mage.

born clara de dzamael, she was engaged at a young age to the then durendaire heir. her mother constantly was negging her and her father didn't much care about her.

had a bad relationship with food during her adolescence because of her mother.

she got married at 18. one week after her wedding, her husband died in a dragon attack. once it became clear that she hadn't become pregnant, house durendaire quietly sent her back home.

she overheard her parents talking about what to do with her, who they could marry her off to know that she was no longer a maiden- and it sickened her. so she fled in the middle of the night, still in her heavy funeral clothes, and took only her and her husband's wedding rings with her.

clara rode on chocobo all night- she felt only a numb kind of fear, one that began to subside when she finally reached her destination, sharlayan's dravanian colony.

clara entered the studium and was classmates with fourchenault and ameliance, and quickly became close to both.

she studied arcanima, and fell in love with math. her archon's thesis was based on arcanima.

she fled with everyone else during the exodus of the colony, and only returned to eorzea when she heard from her colleague y'mhitra about a talented arcanist who had revived the lost art of allagan summoning.

yehn molkot (she/her & they/them)

pld. that's it.

was brought to the source very early in it's history. betrayed the ascians almost immediately and went missing.

became the dominant shard when her counterpart on the source died before her.

is functionally immortal due to ascian horseshit

hydaelyn has been the only constant in her very long life. she's very devoted to her. very much considers herself hydaelyn's sword.

plays the role of warrior of light when none rise up when needed.

I need to vent and this feels like a safe space at the moment. Fuck physically writing in a journal my thoughts are too fast for all that.

It’s funny as I type things escape my mind, but when I don’t try to put things into words, I think 30282736 miles per min with 10 different topics racing all at the same time. But I’m tired of negative ass ppl bro. Negative ass nasty attitudes about everything. It’s like i can’t win. I can’t!! It’s so draining. I miss lightheartedness. I miss silliness. Why can’t people find the good in a situation even if it’s shitty?

I ended things with my therapist last week. It feels like a breakup. I mean that’s a little dramatic lol. Love her, she gave me tough love when I needed it (she also shares my sisters bday and my brothers moon sign, that was a nice thing that showed me I was supposed to have her). Had her for a few years but all it was was talk therapy and I’m tired of talking. I started to feel ashamed of myself with all the things I talked about. Talk talk talk. I’m so tireddddd of talking of the same thingssss and bringing them more to life by overly thinking and ruminating, going in circles. I’m so tired of being that person. And i was also inconsistent with her these last couple months with our sessions. Not living in my truth. So I have another therapist that I’m gonna try with but he’s a man so idk. But it’ll be more adhd focused so I guess that’ll be more of what I need.

As the yts call it im “in between a rock and a hard place”. In several different ways. There are easy solutions to my problems. But I don’t take them. Call me a hypocrite, but doing the right thing is not easy. It’s fucking hard. I hate not being comfortable. I feel so isolated. I’m not alone but I feel alone. I feel like a bother and an annoyance to everyone except my kitten. That’s my girly fr. Girl cats are just itttt, I love the dynamics of both boy and girl cats individually. But girl cats are just that girl! I feel they’re more empathetic, caring of your needs/the bond and more loving overall. Boy cats I feel are more standoffish and on their own terms. Get you a girl cat or just a cat in general. Especially black cats they get a bad wrap like pitbulls but end up being the most gentle little things.

I feel I’m becoming like ppl I don’t want to be. Like an old middle aged person full of regrets and envious of those 18-22. I feel like times ticking. I’m 25 I have my whole life ahead of me and yet why do I feel my youth withering away?? I blame social media. That’s y I deactivated my IG fuck everybody I compare myself to. Fuck those ppl who live freely and go to parties while I feel I don’t have that. But also not fuck them and I’m happy for them.

Things are good tho in my life with the places I work. Ppl respect me and love me. It took some time but once I started being myself, with each job me getting more comfortable that much quicker and my anxiety not controlling how I am socially, ppl love me bro. I make ppl laugh!! They ask for my advice! They say they love my good energy! But these jobs aren’t my career path, so it’s gonna be hard saying goodbye which I will be very soon.

I miss my family but also I don’t. If my sister sees this which you won’t, I’m sorry you know what I mean. I live away from them. They give me headaches but they are my soul family (even tho my parents are def more behind spiritually than me and my siblings so the irony is funny). I miss our trips to Marshall’s and starbies. I miss our movie nights and I miss our long walks all together. I miss my mom blaring bad bunny and me pretending like I know the lyrics bc my mom never taught me Spanish 😭 (my moms an og fan dont play with her, from like 2017ish and saw this man several times before he got big). I don’t miss the chaos tho or the dysfunction, or passive aggressiveness with certain individuals that are in my family’s life.

And it’s funny bc today was such a good fucking day. So many synchronicities. I got to see fucking Steve wilkos bro lol and I was taped where you can see me!! Ima be on tv!! It reminds me of my last job where I’d be around famous ppl a lot and interact with them. That was nice. And yet everything’s hitting me like a truck. It feels like I’m not growing. I am but I’m not. I am and have come so far but it’s also like have I? But then it’s like yeah I have.

Anyways my phones dying. I’m listening to blind by sza. I feel that even tho I am not a straight woman dealing with men🤣 no jk bc the songs not really about that. But I do feel blind to all the things inside of me and what my soul tells me. I loveee when women sing/speak about how embarrassing it is to have feelings!! It is embarrassing!! Like yes and no. Also good days is really nice it feels like therapy in a song like blind. I need to listen to more sza. I like her project z tho, I haven’t listened to all of ctrl or sos so I gotta get on that? I need more women artists in my life who speak of mourning and the depths and complexities of their emotions.

Oh well. Should I post this? Why not

Hi kak, how is it up there? Are you okay? Well, sadly our prays had little chance to reach you or maybe not. Kinda suck isn't it? But it goes the way it has to. We're doing good, still misses you sometimes, or maybe a lot, but we're good, we're trying to live our best life. Anw, your son lives with us here not sure how his life is going to be, but lets see. Theres nothing much we can do except trying our best to direct him into best way but yeah, he's a teenager, so it's kinda hard to facing him.

Hey, I already 25 years old, soon to be 26 in a couple months if Allah allows me or stop at 25 forever so i could be your forever little sister. Or maybe imma pass the age of 27 or so on which means I'll pass the age you never reach, grow old, being grand parent that you'll never be.

Im sorry i randomly tell u this, maybe i get triggered and i told Mas about how your friends still have your number even tho its not active anymore and how your presence means a lot to them. Its already 13 years since you left us, but our feeling hasnt change at all. We miss you, but we're holding each others, stronger than you cant ever imagine. Although we're only sisters now, but mama bapak very proud of us, not sure of me since I dissapointed us a lot, but yeah we're still good. Kaka-kaka take care us a lot, and i'll never be repay their kindness.

Kak, do you think we're in our best life when He took you from us? Cause i do think so. We were so young back then, I was 11 and had no clue hows life gonna hit me from every corner. Ive messed up kak and being the dumbest little sister youve ever had. Im not allowed to ask if, cause its a sin, so i try my best not to ask if to Him.

How did it feel kak when He took ur spirit away? Does it hurt? Do you think im gonna make it if my time had arrived? Are you sad? Do you see us coming cause we're not at home when you left us? How does it feel kak, he made you left us when you're not ready at all? Or you well prepared cause i heard you cleaned up every tools at your work and saying youre leaving? Is it true kak? You left us with no sign and unprepeared, is it fair? But we'll never be ready, it is just sooner or later.

You might've answered this already and I just didn't find it, but one thing that always perplexed me about Duke was how old he was in comparison to the other Batkids. It's obvious he's younger than Dick and Babs, and I pretty sure he's younger than Jason and Cass, and older than Damian, but I cannot tell if he's meant to be Tim and Steph's ages, younger, or older. Could you help me?

You’re all kinds of good here, anon!!! I answered a similar ask abt the Order of Adoption but didn’t dive into specific ages on that post BECAUSE well they didn’t ask lmaooo but ALSO:

Comic ages are very fluid usually! While Years™️ might pass in the canon proper, or while time seems to slow to a crawl, having a character’s age outright stated is something that occurs very rarely for most characters, if at all!

Because it’s always much easier to have a floating age range to work and play around in! It’s easier to keep a character Perpetually 12 or 16 or 25 or mid-40s or- you get the idea. SO, with that in mind. Let’s do our Best to Break Down What Age Duke Might Be Currently A N D how it might interact with the Other Batkids!

(Warning for a Very Long Post, lots of issue citations, and a LOT of comics terminology regarding specific runs/events/continunity. I’m gonna try to keep it as clear/concise as possible ofc but plz keep these things in mind! If you’re not at least marginally familiar with Bat-Comics, you might find yourself feeling a little lost here!)

So from the Zero Year arc we see a common Trend that plays out pretty consistently with Batfam comics: a Life-Changing Event Occuring while the protag is Young™️.

(Batman (2011) #30)

With how Duke is drawn in these particular issues, and given the trends of the past, I’d place him in the 8-12 range. The historic precedent being ofc that that is the same range that canon usually places both Bruce and Dick at for their Tragedies™; the more benign reason being that he... just very much Looks to be drawn in that Range. He’s very clearly an Older/Prepubescent child here.

Fast Forward to his Next Appearance in the Endgame arc and-

(Batman (2011) #37)

He’s definitely older! He’s wiser! And he’s giving Batman a fistbump lmao. Again, no strict age given here BUT, since they condensed each Robin to a Year or Two tops with Bruce (its n52 and its fucked up is what it is), we can assume it’s been at least 4-5 since Zero Year (which would mean if we go off the age range I proposed for that year, then theoretically he could be anywhere from 12-16 here, and I think that tracks pretty well. Not Perfectly and Certainly Not so well with Pre52 continuity ofc, but I’ll talk about that later!)

In We Are Robin, while its not stated Directly In The Text, it IS given as an Informational Tidbit that Duke is 16 (specifically this can be found at the end of issue #4)! (Sweet sweet canon confirmation FINALLY)

We know that WAR takes place Fairly Soon after Endgame (almost immediately, give or take a month or two given that Duke’s been placed in a few foster homes at this point and has racked up Quite A File) now, again id like to remind y’all that while this is a NICE starting point to have, keep in mind that comics are fluid and this may be retconned slightly/ignored in later stories bc Keeping Duke 16-ish is in DC’s Best Interest at the moment. (Having Relatable Teen Characters afterall is a Good Marketing strategy™️. And the longer they can Keep them Young, the Better)

With that in mind let’s take a moment to Highlight the fact that Duke and Damian have crossed paths at this point AND the storylines that have occurred during this year that were meant to be in conjunction with one another!

Because Prior to Endgame, Damian had Died! And just a year (in real, meat-space time) before We Are Robin, he was resurrected and had begun his “Year of Atonement” in the Robin: Son of Batman maxiseries. Midway through both this series and WAR (and, we can assume, midway thru this “Year” for Damian) the Robin War begins/ends and we see at least one major Moment between these two boys who will soon call one another brothers:

Given that R:SoB is followed up VERY quickly by Teen Titans Rebirth (in which Damian celebrates his 13th birthday), we can conclude that Damian would be 12 during this time (well, 12 and 1/2 to play it safe lmao). That being said, this Confirms about a 4yr gap between Duke and Damian! (One Batkid down at least! but he’s the key to the others so put a pin in him!)

As We Are Robin draws to its conclusion, DC was releasing another arc that would eventually flow into the Rebirth Era, by the end of which, Bruce would approach Duke with an Idea (which involves Bruce becoming Dukes temporary guardian & as he states Many Times “Trying Something New” with Duke).

And thus the Rebirth Era begins, and Duke began his Year of training (most directly encapsulated by the Cursed Wheel arc in the All-Star Batman run:

(All-Star Batman #1 (back-up story))

Bruce introduces Duke to a training regimen that Alfred has named “the Cursed Wheel”. It encompasses all the training Bruce and the other bats have undergone and condenses it down into color-coordinated segments that will take Duke a Year to Complete.

It can be assumed that by the End of this Year Duke will somehow miraculously still be 16, despite, again, an entire ass year passing.

There’s one story that takes place mid-year in All-Star Batman, and the Cursed Wheel is meant to be capped off by Duke’s first Official Day as the Signal (in the titular Batman & the Signal ofc) BUT, near as I can tell after this story, Dukes age is not brought up again. So until they DO bring it up either in Batman & the Outsiders or whatever future run Duke becomes involved in, we can assume DC will be working with the idea that he’s meant to be in that 16-18 range from here on out (ie still a minor).

But, dear anon, you might be saying “okay, that’s cool, but how does that relate to my question abt how he falls in with the other Bats?” You’ll have to be a little patient with me here, but I think I may have cracked the code!

Keep in mind I’m gonna be addressing both the Post-Crisis to Flashpoint Continuity (ie mid-80s to 2010 in comics history) and the N52-slash-Rebirth Era (2010-Today). Its generally agreed by fandom and DC alike that these points of rebooting &/or Major Events constitute the era of “Modern” comics, and that everything from the 80s-on might more or less be canon on some level, even if not All of it is.

(Plus, most of fandom usually likes to borrow elements from both eras and much more rarely from stories before it, SO-)

Lets do a quick rundown of how everyone who’s Closer to Duke’s Age, Relates to each other first, age-wise:

Given that Jason was 15 when he died, in A Lonely Place of Dying its established that Bruce had become increasingly reckless since his death, and by the end of the story, Tim has stepped in to fill Robin’s shoes (he states that he’s 13 during this story btw). Pretty soon after, Stephanie Brown is introduced & established to be about a year older than Tim (wish I could pin-point a specific issue BUT, i unfortunately haven’t read any Tim OR Steph-involved comics that predate No Man’s Land... Besides the aforementioned Lonely Place and Young Justice technically, but im working on remedying that soon!)

NOW, during the No Man’s Land event, Cassandra is introduced, and pretty soon into her Batgirl run, its revealed that she’s around the same age as Jason (or at least how old he Would Have Been, had he not died.) Now, given that Jay has an August bday and Cass has a January one, fandom sometimes likes to play around with the idea of one being older than the other (OR even speculating/placing them in an AU as twins/siblings, given that Lady Shiva (Cass’ mom) was a Possible Candidate to be Jason’s biological mother but that’s a Whole Other Thing i wont get into here.)

The point being, Cass, in this era of comics, IS slightly older than Tim and Steph. At Tim’s start as Robin, their ages could either line up like: Tim-13, Steph-14, Cass-15 (being a few months ‘behind’ Jay), then Jason at 15/16 (depending on how soon Tim filled the role after Jay died in April) OR Jason-15/16, Cass-16/17 (in this case she’d be a few months ‘ahead’ now instead)

So brief detour to talk New 52, however! Because Tim, Steph & Cass all got switched around from where DC originally left them prior to the reboot! Now I haven’t read much of them in this era, other than Batman & Robin: Eternal, so my Understanding of their current ages is Spotty at Best. The general consensus seems to be that while before N52, Stephanie had been attending her first year of College (& doing VERY WELL i might add), with the reboot she was set back a few years alongside Tim to a vague Late-Teen state (so 16-18-ish, instead of a Very Clearly Established 18/19). Cass is probably the worst off for this reboot, given that B&R:E basically constitutes her new origin for the new continuity, and does nothing to confirm her age (all I really know is that she’s a Vague Late-Teen too... Probably? Maybe?), given how much they infantilize her, and subsequently how fandom in turn has taken to infantilizing her too, theres a semi-popular fanon that places her Younger that Tim and Steph. And I, for one, propose that we ignore that bc its Weak Sauce my dudes.

Some fans chose to ignore N52 continuity due to this vagueness, and will stick to the ages established before the N52/Rebirth reboots. But its something to keep in mind regardless bc we’re all obviously going to pull from what’s most familiar to us!

But WHERE could we place Duke with regards to them, then? Because them being “Late Teens” is certainly much too vague to work with!

This is Where Damian is the key!

Because Damian is one of those rare exceptions to the Reboot Rule. His story flowed almost seamlessly over from before to after. While he was made a Robin at the age of 10, he continued to grow and learn even after the universe was being rewritten to suit the whims of DC editorial.

If we choose to ignore how everyone else’s ages and origins were swapped around, and stick with the growth that was presented before the reboot, then we can draw some interesting conclusions!

Firstly, though Stephanie also had Died and subsequently Returned, she hadn’t lost much, if any time, from the Ordeal. At the start of her Batgirl run, she is enrolled at a Gotham university and making headway with a more firm foot in the Batfamily (even to the point that she and Damian spend a few issues bonding. At this point in time, Damian is definitely 11, and again, Steph can be assumed to be 18/19 during the course of her run. We’ll assume 18 for clarity’s sake.)

So, then when Damian is 11, now our line up is as Follows:

Dami - 11, Steph - 18, Tim - 17, Cass 19-21 (the range depending again, if you subscribe to Cass being either older/younger than Jason).

WHICH MEANS, If during Robin War Damian is 12 (and a half) THEN We’ve got an age line-up that Potentially looks Like This:

Dami -12(and 1/2), Duke - 16, Tim - 18, Steph - 19, Cass - 20-22 (And Obvsly Jason, Babs & Dick at their varying Older Ages than everyone here)

and im just now realizing i Didnt include Harper in this line-up, but thats bc she’d also throw a big wrench in all this. I’d personally throw her in with being Steph’s age, but I’m pretty sure she was supposed to be either that, or between Steph and Cass (again, since its N52, i believe Cass was/is assumed to be Younger than Steph, but that contradicts the assumed following of pre52 canon that we have for the above line-up, obvsly, and so we ignore that lmao)

All this to say, however, that canon and fandom is what you make of it, and if you want to wiggle these ages around a little, you’re more than allowed! God Knows i usually like to skew the Tim-Steph-Cass age group to be a tad older than this in my own fic writing, and I like to have Duke start as a Robin at 14/15 instead of 16, but that’s just bc I like the dynamic potential it could bring with them being Definitively Older that him, and thus in a more secure place to be Mentoring him right alongside Bruce & the others.

But you might see these age ranges and want to do something Different (say, making Tim, Steph, Cass, & Duke all the Same Age at 17 instead! And that very well tracks with how current comics kinda looks right now!) and you’re absolutely valid to do so! Because again, comic character’s ages are meant to be fluid, not fixed!

And at the end of the day, its all about wanting to see these teen heroes kick serious ass haha

Buzzy and putting on a show, you bite your bottom lip and lean in, slanting your mouth over hers with a sigh. The sound sinks into Bucky’s stomach and he groans in agony—jealous you’d rather kiss Natasha than him.

“Keep it PG, ladies!” Tony calls, pointing a laser from the glove at your chin. “This is taking way too long!”

“Tony, shut up, man. I’m trying to take a video.” Wanda slaps the phone from Sam’s hand.

Having had enough of it all, Bucky stands, patting his thighs. “Not that this isn’t how I want to spend my night…” he mumbles, “But I’m going to bed.”

You look up distractedly, bottom lip a little wet from Romanoff, eyes languid from the long night and quirk your head, “You leavin’, Buck? Wan’ me to walk you?”

“What—like he’s gonna get lost from here to his room?”

Bucky is going to get arrested tonight for murdering Sam. He keeps his cool, regardless.

“Uh—no, you have fun.”

You hop up anyway, grab his hand with a blundering step and yank him forward. “C’mon… I got you.” Courageous with liquor, you tug him along, turning a corner and chattering all the while about how as much as you appreciate that terribly expensive whiskey—you’d rather have a beer. There’s nothing better than a beer, some pretzels, and a movie.

“Like the other day! That stout we shared was so good! Thanks for taking me out, by the way.” A giggle, then self-consciously, your hand loosens before you yank it away, “Uh—s-sorry.”

“For what?”

“Um, I know yo-you’re a little guarded. I didn’t mean to grab your hand like that.”

Oh. The realization dawns on him suddenly like a strike of lightning– illuminating his apprehensions with a flash of clarity. You think he’s shy… but he’s only been good for your sake.

He calls your name, steps forward until you’re nearly against the wall and looks down. Your mouth opens with a nearly inaudible gasp, but Bucky can hear the way your heart picks up speed. “Yeah?”

Purposefully, Bucky plays with a lock of your hair, tucks it behind your ear, and lets his finger ghost over your neck. “I’m gonna kiss you now.”

Your throat clenches, bobbing with a thick swallow and Bucky thinks if this wasn’t the first kiss, he’d be latching onto that pulse instead. “Okay…” Your mouth part expectantly, eyes fluttering closed, hand coming up to fist his shirt.

“God. I’ve been waiting for this.”

It’s sublime. It’s perfect. It’s the biggest relief he’s ever felt when you return his touch—parting your lips to receive the tip of his tongue against yours. Thirst. Desperation. Enthusiastic limbs scrambling to feel more of him. A bucking of your hips against his thigh and he’s soaring up into heaven with the sensation.

“Wow! Keep it PG, ya damn freaks!”

Euphoria shatters with Wilson’s voice booming down the hallway. Then, cheers erupt. Steve, Wanda, Natasha, a chorus of claps and whoops. Tony’s laser pointer glares red right into his eye. “Barnes, you old pervert!” Wilson, again, with a death wish.

You hide your face in his shirt, laughing before you yank him back down, smothering his rising temper with something hotter—enough to make him forget five other adults are watching. “Buck?” You ask, not waiting for his reply, “Wanna kiss me in your bed?”

With a shameless groan that sends the audience scattering, Bucky scoops you up into his arms and stomps down the hallway. Silly to think that he would get arrested for murder tonight when you’re the one who’s sending him to an early grave. With a laugh, he kisses you again, snug in his hold and kicks the bedroom door open.

ok ok jokes, ill go more in depth... some of this is taken from things ive written before but not posted. also for anyone reading this im non bee nary so know that im not trying to describe the experiences of different identities in first-person, i’m basing this off of both my own and my friends’ experiences... none of this is “OMG YES CHARACTER ANGST >:))” but rather depicting personal struggles in fictional characters, so just know that the more difficult subjects that may be covered are not there just to see the character in pain, but rather to think about their eventual resilience against it and development afterwards

for geralt and yennefer i have more specific reasons why i think being transgender actually fits with their canonical characters & related story arcs, and then for the rest i have headcanons and maybe some reasoning but not a lot.

geralt: geralt already represents how a struggle with toxic masculinity and expectations of masculinity can influence one who wants to be seen as masculine to deny and bury their emotions. him being trans develops upon the aspect of his struggle with emotions, ive seen my friends who are transmasculine / myself when i used to ID as transmasculine struggle with showing emotions bc of feeling like you’re going to be misgendered if you shed a single tear. in canon, we already learn that kaer morhen has a bit of a macho culture (just fyi eskel and lambert and coen are trans too now, don’t go getting any idea that those guys are cis) and i believe that the “witchers have no emotions” thing is like 5% actual biology and 95% being raised to fight and not to feel. vesemir is a good father but he just wasn’t very emotionally nurturing, it’s the caste’s way of raising kids that geralt breaks out of.

i think geralt’s self-image also speaks a lot to the feelings of harsh internal transphobia. he constantly others himself from others and feels like people view him as different, which is metaphorical for any marginalized group under the sun, but also is very common for lgbt ppl. again this is smth ive really struggled with within the past few years so im just projecting/know what it feels like and feel that how geralt sees himself in canon is similar to a view suffering from internalized transphobia.

geralt's character already redefines manhood because he has to learn what it means to be a good father. and i think him being trans would be representative of his constant learning and growth as a person, yet also somewhat involved with his self loathing and feeling like just Him Existing is an affront ... but of course he unlearns this with time and love from others and all of his character development

yennefer: yennefer’s whole backstory revolves around defining who she is and defying the people who mistreated her and told her she was nothing. canonically yennefer of vengerberg is the story of the successful self-made woman... her life as janka she would rather forget, no one calls her by that name, and no one ever would because its not who she is nor who i think she ever was.

shes incredibly strong-willed and knows what she wanted from life but some things are terrifying to reach out for, like love and acceptance. yennefer has a conflict with love and being loved because that was never a safe topic for her ... (also sapkowski handled this specifically poorly imo, but:) yennefer canonically struggles with being loved for who she is. i think she deals so much with her previous abuse and again, expectations from parents, and coming to terms with the fact that she survived it all. also this isnt even touching upon her arc regarding motherhood. wanting to give a child your everything and everything that you never had... the love and kindness that no one gave you...

ciri: ciri hesitated to ever identify with “girl” or “boy,” she’s also i think the representation of childhood in general, she’s naturally curious about gender presentation as she ages and just never really cares to commit to gender. i think she’d say she was a girl but only reluctantly bc she just doesn’t care much.

ok in a more serious context i think he’s a nonbinary guy, i think him being trans might explain why he has way more friendships than relationships with family members. dandelion, like yennefer, is also someone that had to define who he was for himself, i mean for one his stage persona of dandelion is entirely an artist’s creation/hyperbole of himself, i think he also had to think abt his inner identity too

his gender is also just “your friend that comes to your house and eats all ur chips and drinks all ur beer and passes out on top of you on the couch”

milva: ok unfortunately i currently think milva is the token non-trans friend (she’s nonbinary just doesnt think of herself as trans) but it’s only because her major arc in baptism of fire revolves around her pregnancy and miscarriage and just bc she is not trans doesn’t mean she doesn’t go through her own difficult struggling process surrounding her womanhood. she struggles enormously throughout the series and in her backstory with defining herself between two rigid identities: the feminine maria and the cutthroat milva. in her talk with geralt, she reveals how she feels trapped between these two identities and feels like they cannot coexist. i feel like she’s a nonbinary/gender non-conforming butch* lesbian whose struggles with sexuality intersect her struggles with gender and what it means to her to be a gnc woman. also you have to consider that milva was raised in a small village in lower sodden so she understood gender in the very strict roles ascribed to men and women, so she felt like she couldn’t be a woman unless she was this very traditional idea of what a woman is “supposed to be like,” which she’s both been trying to shape herself to be and also running away from simultaneously. she learns to accept herself within the hansa bc they love and support her for who she is, and she doesn’t need to be strictly feminine or masculine to be understood by them

* i know the terms nonbinary and gnc and butch didn’t exist in the 1260s tyvm, i’m just saying this as how i interpret her in a modern context

regis: gender is a human sociological construct so basically don’t ask him unless you’re prepared to listen for 20 minutes. vampires can exist noncorporeally so they can exist without gender, also i hc the telepathic vampiric language is nongendered as it’s a transmission of pure thought, will, and force, so it doesn’t even use any grammar. i also hc that vampires just appear the way they feel in terms of appearance and age (e.g., regis at around 300 when he died still looked 25 bc he was as stupid as a 25 year old, now he’s calmer and understands more, so he looks middle-aged). when chilling out with humans regis will be referred to as a man bc that’s just how he appears but it’s an identity he had to learn about and adopt, not something he was assigned. most vampires look androgynous anyways bc they just feel androgynous, how are you gonna feel a gender when you don’t know what a gender is... if you HAD to understand him with human labels / put it in a modern context (like if i was making an modern real life AU) i’d say he’s a nonbinary trans man.

cahir: much like geralt i think cahir’s story is one of living up to expectations, but cahir’s actually takes it a step further because his major motivation in his backstory is trying to prove to his mother that he can be a good son that will make her proud and gain honor for the family... he seeks validation from external sources but faces ruin when he learns that war is not the way to prove one’s prowess and skill

angouleme: shes trans and i simply say so bc shes very cool and funny and i dont think a cis person could be this cool and funny. also i think the story of a runaway teen who was abandoned by her biological family and found solace in a new family is both very good and featured in a lot of trans ppl’s narratives. she kind of exudes this “im finally at a point in my life where i’m safe and cared for, i can start HRT now, let’s gooOOoooOOooo” energy.

hey liz i've been thinking a lot about story structure lately and i wanted your take on how you decide what structure your stories will have? i know there's that "you have to do what your story needs and tells you to do" thing but these bitches dont ever tell me anything they just multiply so. thoughts? - bma

(as an aside, i don't know whether involving medium would change many things but it may be worth considering. mainly i think medium is just a matter of arrangement and that the story would be for most intents and purposes the same no matter how you choose to tell it. i guess you could argue that structure is arrangement in itself and intrinsically tied to medium but i sort of feel like it is secondary arrangement, if at all? like if you consider time as an element to outline -- the time IN the story (how things happen to your characters) is not necessarily the time you’re telling the story IN (how you are telling your reader that things are happening) aka internal chronology doesnt equal your work’s pacing? or should it??? does this make sense? i dont think so. i am sorry.) - bma :|

i think there’s 3 thots to unpack here (medium, structure, & chronology) & i’m gonna start with medium bc it’s easier. im also putting it behind a cut bc it’s gonna get just stupidly long and rambly. i’m sorry in advance if it’s not helpful to you, i have a lot to say for someone who has never taken even one single class on writing and as a result doesn’t know jack shit (there’s a tl;dr at the end dont worry)

about MEDIUM:

so like ok i’m just some goof-off with a HS degree who writes fanfiction but In My Very Super Qualified Personal Opinion, i don’t think that most of the time medium is intrinsically tied to STRUCTURE of the main storytelling arc...i think the art of storytelling itself is distinct from the medium you choose to tell the story IN. this post puts it better than i ever could but basically for me, i feel like the story itself is sort of the raw, malleable concept, and the medium you choose to tell it in is how you convey the information??

like in a book, you can say “she forgot her keys” and in a film you have to show her smacking her forehead, heading back into the house, and swiping her keeps off the counter. you can’t TELL in film, you have to show. similarly i regret every day i cannot perfectly describe a facial expression with words when i see it so clearly in my head. for audio-only podcasts that are dialogue heavy out of necessity you have different limitations than you would for, say, animated music videos with no dialogue at all. games allow for more interactivity and exploration while sacrificing accessibility, tv shows allow for more length while sacrificing, uh, a big hollywood budget...medium affects the kind of story you can reasonably tell which is why some stories are better suited to one medium than another. i think trying things in other mediums is a good way to stretch your storytelling muscles but with enough skill nearly any story could be told in any medium. i think when trying to decide on a medium you just gotta weigh the pros & cons and what you feel comfortable with/what you think would be most effective/what would evoke the strongest reaction

re: structure:

firstly “do what the story tells u to do” is a little silly like...the story isn’t sentient. come on. that’s like “i can only write when the writing gods inspire me” there are no writing gods! inspire yourself! it’s all in our weird messed up brains! ok anyway.

this is, again, just how i do things, and i am 700% self-taught so take it with a grain of salt, but when i sit down and start blocking out a story from scratch i don’t...actually consider the big structure at all! sorry if that’s not helpful to you. i like to make a list of everything i want to happen, and then put it together in a few different orders to see what looks best. and when i’m finished, whatever i have just like...IS the structure i go with, with perhaps minor tinkering to make it flow more smoothly. (i think this might be in the same spirit as “do what the story tells you” with less bullshit and more Agency Of The Writer.)

for long and more complex projects, i actually usually have several lists - one list of stuff that is, for example, the Action Plot (the kingdom has been cursed, i’m tracking down my serial killer sister to bring her to justice, i’m running from djinn who wanna kill my dad, i’m trying to bring my dead not-boyfriend back to life). then i have another list for Character A & Character B’s romance or whatever. and maybe a even another one for solo character development (magicphobic prince learns to love magic, former werewolf hunter figures out his family is a cult, half-demon learns to embrace his own nature). and as many lists as we need for however many Main Characters and or Plots/Sideplots

how i order the lists: individually first. don’t mix them together to start with. when deciding the order of an individual list i like to, for example in a romance arc, use escalating intimacy. “A and B have dinner together” is naturally gonna go way sooner than “A and B kiss” or “A and B talk about A’s angsty backstory” because that’s more satisfying. draw it out, good/important stuff last, dangle that carrot so we have a reason to keep reading! for singular character development, it’s basically a straightforward point A to point B...if i want my guy to start hating magic with everything he is and end up being very comfortable with it, i have to put “reluctantly uses magic to save his own life” WAYYY before “casually using magic to light torches and reheat his cold stew.”

the tricky part for me is when i’m done with these lists and then i need to mix them together To Pace My Whole Story. (this is usually why i wind up with a rainbow colored spreadsheet.) i don’t like to put too many things too close together because then the pace feels uneven. even if my Action Plot is only a thinly veiled excuse for romance and character development, i still don’t want to focus on a romance for 30,000 words and then go “and oh yeah in case you forgot Serial Killing Sister is still coming for your asses.” the more sideplots and major character arcs you’re juggling the harder it is to get an even distribution, which is my main concern always

and like, generally, whatever i have when i’m finished...is my structure. (sorry.)

i don’t know much about the classic 3-act or anything like that, but i usually can divide them up into 3-5 big arcs based on story turning points. sometimes i take a scene out of one arc and put it in another because it fits better and i like for my shit to be organized, but usually by the time i’m finished with all that, that’s what the final story is mostly gonna look like. (there have been a few exceptions when i realized i needed extra scenes/changes while i was MID-DRAFT and let me tell you that murders me EVERY time. it happened on the merlin fic i’m currently posting and that was like my own personal hell.)

this is also where thots about chronology come in:

i think time CAN be an element of this if you WANT it to be, but it doesn’t HAVE to be. if you want it to be, i would consider it just another “list” like character development or the romance arc.

i usually plot without considering Time very much...to me, it’s all down to the events you want to show, and however much time it takes is the byproduct. if you want to show something from a character’s chilhood but then tell the bulk of it when they’re adults, that’s one thing. if you want to show a scene from their childhood, teenhood, young adulthood, etc, that’s a different kind of pacing?? i usually do it this way so i can regard time like wordcount: it takes as long as it takes. 3 days or 3 years, a 1.5k drabble or a 100k epic...overall, my LARGEST CONCERN is that even distribution. in the same way that i don’t want one chapter to be 30,000 words when the rest are 10,000 words, i personally am not a fan of huge timeskips offscreen

(because this where i think someone’s own internal chronology DOES matter...this is just a personal preference, as a reader i have a hard time really comprehending, say, a year timeskip or a 10yr timeskip when all i did was turn one page. like, a year is such a long time. i can’t even begin to describe how different i am now to how i was a year ago. it’s the same for character development. time IS development and as a writer i’m not really comfortable having that take place offscreen - for main characters, at least. it’s just too jarring. a little prologue with something happening 10 or 20 years ago is usually fine, but for the most part, i’m not a fan. ...i can do one chapter per year a lot easier than i can do two chapters in childhood and the other 8 in adulthood. of course you can play with this a LOT with nonlinear storytelling, which is a whole other very cool thing, and someone skilled in their work can keep me sucked in no matter what, but imo if you don’t want to risk throwing your reader out of your work it’s better to keep things steady)

HOWEVER sometimes time IS an element u wanna consider outside of just making sure your shit is evenly distributed...if your heart is moved to tell a story in a specific timeframe, over a year, or from solstice to solstice (this was almost the timeline for my merlin fic and then i changed it), for the first six months of a friendship, or even a huge journey in the span of a single day (toby fox had a lot of success with this one lol).

i think it can help to choose a start and end point for your chronology the same way you do for character development (prince goes from hating magic to being ok with it, story takes place from ages 8 to 25, or from new year’s eve 2038 to 2039, whatever) - that way you can keep your distribution even, if that’s a thing you want to do...even if you have a lot of skips you can still note what happens offscreen to make it work better in your head? like, if you just make it another List, another column on your spreadsheet, when you’re in the early stages of organizing you can be conscious of it and make sure it’s playing into the story the way you want it to

anyway these r my thots im SOOOO SORRY this is so long lmao. brain machine broke today which is why i had to ramble more to explain myself. the tl;dr in case ur brain is melting out of ur ears & u didn’t sign up for an essay:

imo medium is totally distinct from storytelling tho ofc some stories are better suited to some mediums

structure? i don’t know her. i plot w/o regard to structure and then if it looks funny i mush it into a more structurally sound shape

my main concern when structuring anything, including time, is an even distribution of Events and a steady rate of escalation

structure to me is just what i have when i’m finished plotting. i’m sorry one day i’m gonna take a writing class

internal chronology matters to me personally because i have a little bit of time blindness but maybe not to everyone, i know many very successful stories where they disregarded that entirely to no ill effect

writer’s block isn’t real! everyone just needs more rainbow spreadsheets

Tru story: throughout my moms whole pregnancy, everyone including the doctors were convinced I was gonna be a boy because they could never get a clear look at me in the ultra sounds so my parents had only picked out boy names until I was born to which they changed their choice of “Eric” to Erika :))
