(this is one post in a mini-series about witchy apps i use)

My personal favorite app for identifying plants, learning info about them, and even helping me manage my garden is PictureThis! It’s especially a good option for witches, because listen here…

It often includes in the info of the plant its “symbolism” (meaning, its most common correspondences). It’s usually towards the end of its notes, so I always scroll to the bottom and up a bit real quick if I wanna check what this random plant I’ve come across could be used for in spells.

Reasons I like this app:

The symbolism feature, as I’ve already discussed ^

The variety of information it provides on the plant, like its history, most of its names, scientific classifications, how its seen or used in certain cultures, and other facts

All the info on how to care for it, when to plant or harvest it, etc.

Its diagnosing feature so if my plant is sick or something it can tell me where the problem is, WHAT the problem is, and tips to fix it

I love how sometimes it includes a poem or something on the plant

It’s pretty accurate ime as a plant identifier! Of course, anything like this can never be perfect, but I’ve has great results!

I’m a big fan of widgets, and I really appreciate their widget for watering reminders for each individual plant I have lol

There are a lot more features in this app that I’ve never explored personally, even though I’ve had this app for years lol. I’ve just never felt the need to—but, it might be perfect for you if you want to connect more with the people and plants near you!

Most of their features are free, and I only use free apps, so everything I’ve described is free <3

I guess the biggest downside would be that identification is never perfect? And that there are a few things I’d like to have that you have to pay for? But honestly it’s pretty great!

This is the app! Again, I have an iphone, so I’m certain that its on iphones, but idk about other devices.

Do you think humanising the Borg from I Borg onwards was a good move or should they have stayed as the monolithic legion they started as?

readers please take note this is the level of discourse i want to see in my ask box from now on

its been a long time since I saw any borg episodes first hand so im probably forgetting some stuff but heres what i think. as cunt as the borg queen is (and i truly love her...this actress was so good in Silent Hill too), no serious science fictioneur is going to say the borg concept was made stronger by the retconning of the borg collective to be even vaguely individualistic. the reason the borg were so terrifying when they were introduced is solely due to their gestalt nature. there shouldnt be specialized borg (well not beyond insect specialization) or individual borg or even a fathomable borg "mind". I, Borg is a classic episode because it does what TNG and DS9 do best, which is to reexamine the assumptions and prejudices of Starfleet (which are the assumptions and prejudices of the primarily american, 20th-21st century star trek audience) and wrestle with ethics in a vacuum (lol) vs material reality, and really the existence of the Locutus arc already exploded the borg collective concept in a dumb way (as cool as Locutus is) so at that point it was already sort of moot.

i think there are a lot of better ways to handle "borg separated from collective" as a concept than what was done with Seven of Nine, Hugh, the Borg Queen and Locutus respectively, and i think there were better ways to advance the Borg concept for future iterations and to elevate their design and level of threat for narrative reasons. there are so many good examples of both collective lifeforms and parasitism just on Earth that the writers could have drawn from, but the Star Trek writers are rarely allowed to write actual science fiction, and when they get close, the producers always step in to make them dumb everything down for an audience that, imo, doesnt really need things dumbed down for them.

what the star trek producers get wrong (and what all TV producers get wrong) is that the technobabble on shows like this can be scientifically accurate or at least theoretically accurate and the audience members who are not interested in that sort of thing will regard it exactly the same as if the technobabble is bullshit, but the nerds and intellectuals who are watching will be thrilled! dumbing things down is pointless, no one who needs things dumbed down is paying that much attention anyway, they dont care if things make sense or not. a correct explanation of space travel and physics sounds exactly the same to them as one that's just mad libbed together from buzzwords. catering to them is meaningless. but being smart with it and letting the science nerds on staff actually write accurately will in the end make a better show.

i know there are some scenes showing borg infants in the show but im not sure they ever explain it, borg "queens" and "drones" responsible for reproduction would have been a no brainer. you could work a semi-individualistic plotline in with the crew running into a small shuttle or pod-type craft that just had one pregnant queen onboard or a queen and some drones who were looking for somewhere to start a new colony. i think showing borg near the end of their working lives as basically decaying, animate corpses would have been both scary and lore-supported, as would an "ant graveyard" type scene, but that may have been too much for 90s censors. parasitic lifeforms on earth usually have powerful immunosuppressant hormones to prevent the host bodies from rejecting them, i think this is probably mentioned in TNG and handwaved at some point but it would be a really big deal, medically, for rehabbing an individual borg like Seven or Locutus or Hugh.

but I was curious, I wanted to be more inclusive/have more representation of PoC with my art works. But I do not know where to begin, or how to properly do research especially with how to research history and find accurate articles or so on.

Which I was curious on if you have any tips or pointers on how to do this/do my homework correctly?

How to Learn Any Topic RIGHT NOW- (kinda)

[A slightly LONG length post where I talk about my biggest resource and my number one tactic for sounding like you know your shit in an hour or less. Plus a list of educational Youtubers]

In High School, I mastered an art. The Art of 'Skyrim Speech 100'. The way to sound like you know what you're talking about, and form a pretty solid foundation of information in one sitting.

I am DEADASS CONVINCED that I have it boiled down to a very specific scientific formula. I got this I okay. I gotchu I swear I'm bout to have you like this im so deadass -

For me personally, the best resource is YouTube. One Website - Three Videos. And you're GOOD.

I have ADHD so - huge attention issues, so videos are a go to for me.

But I also really appreciate seeing the person explaining things to me. Finding good websites can be HARD, especially nowadays where a lot of websites might not even be written by humans, just clobbered together by AI.

For me, YouTube lets me see the person behind the channel, and it's a lot easier for me to vet the information if it's coming from one person who is open about their identity/certifications.

If their whole channel is dedicated to one thing, you can usually tell when they're very dedicated/educated on a topic, and I feel a lot more comfortable listening to them. Rather than reading random websites with writers I don't know/can't see.

Longform Youtube can be SO GOOD.

I'm gonna list some at the bottom - but you can find channels on everything. From architecture, to historical dress, to subway systems, entire cultures, etc.

In recent years Youtube has made a big push for longform content - so I recommend checking out videos that are 15 minutes OR MORE.

Not only is that enough time to go in depth, but because it's a video - the information is fed to you in a linear fashion. It's a lot more conversational and visual than reading a website.

If you hear something and need to remember, you can always go back. It can be hard to go back to a webpage and find the exact line, but videos are a bit easier.

Tips:

Try for find Youtubers that focus on ONE topic - or creators who go in depth about a wide array of interesting things (like Tom Scott or Anthony Padilla). Look for Doctors and Professors - A lot of educational professionals have youtube channels now. And they'll usually be upfront about it, searching things like 'History Professor explains X' or 'Doctor explains Y'. TEDTalks are good for this too. Look for people who are, or have the thing you're representing - If you're writing for a disability, it's always good to watch a video about the day in the life of someone with it - mental illnesses too. And there are a lot of great youtubers that easily break down things like cultural practices - or the issues they face because of their identity. Look for news channels. Watch current events. Vice, BBC, Channel 4, and have a lot of good current news, and they're posting videos every day. These videos show real life conditions while explaining it all, and they're really helpful for knowing about current political/cultural topics. DOCUMENTARIES!!!! - There is a documentary on anything. You can quote them in academics, and unlike movies, people post them on YouTube ALL the time, and people make them all the time. If you need to know about something, DOCUMENTARY.

I love using videos for everything, and below is how I use them:

I have a method that usually helps me sound like I'm super knowledgeable - By casting a very wide and very specific net over any topic. By narrowing any topic down to three parts, you can learn about 40% of a topic, but sound like you know 80%.

How to Teach Yourself Any Topic (in an hour and some change)

Three step method.

Watch three longform videos (15+ mins) about the topic. Each video about something slightly different.

The first video is about The History. This teaches us about the background of the topic. The second video is about The Expert Opinion. This teaches us about the reality of the topic. The third video is about a Random Topic inside of the main topic. This is to make us sound smart (in school)/add details or inspiration (while making characters).

Watch a fifteen minute video about each of these things, and in less than an hour, you'll have a pretty solid foundation of what it is, where it came from, and random (but surprisingly useful) details.

And when I say random I MEAN RANDOM. Can be anything - the niche, the better.

I'll give an example below with real search results and videos.

Example: I wanna make a Victorian Era Spider-woman.

The History Video - I watch a video about the general era, or what it was like being a woman in that time. I searched: Women in Victorian Era I found a real video titled: The Daily Life of a Victorian Lady

The Expert Opinion - I wanted to design her outfit accurately, so I looked for a Dress Historian's opinion on 1880's outfits I searched: Victorian Era Fashion I found a real channel: Bernadetta Banner (a channel all about recreating historical dresses - by a Broadway costume designer.)

The Random Topic - I don't know much about the Victorian Era..but I know theres two topics people always relate to the era - Sherlock Holmes and Jack the Ripper. I chose Sherlock. Sooooo, I watched a video about whether BBC sherlock was better than Downy Sherlock. Why? Because in 15 minutes it tells me about the show, the movie, AND the book - ALSO while teaching about the time period. I searched: BBC Sherlock vs Book I found a real video titled: Sherlock vs Sherlock - Which Iteration is Superior.

So after three 15-20 minute videos I know the history, the facts, and some random niche details of a topic.

Do I know everything about it? Not at all! But doing that, usually you can probably get through a conversation without freaking out too much.

By doing all that - I now know enough about the Victorian Era. From those videos I can accurately write an average Victorian woman, design her outfit accurate to the era, and also infuse some Victorian literature influence into her story.

All in an hour.

It works for other people character's too. Watching a video on the 70's, a video on the Punk Movement, and then a video of lets say a video about the band Ramones

Some ideas for different topics:

If you want to show a character from a different time period -

If you're trying to write a character like Hobie, first watch a video about the history of the period - to understand when they were living. Then watch a video on their style/subculture - like the Punk movement. Then pick a specific band/media from the era and watch a video on it.

Sidebar: This is actually how I made Diane! I have little to no idea about the 70's outside of Punk. So searched up the history of 70's Disco, a video by Glamour about 1970's fashion, and I only knew one or two Disco singers (Donna Summer & Diana Ross) - so I chose Diana Ross. Diana is the direct inspiration for Diane's name and big hair. I never reference Diana, but it helps Diane fit the Disco theme, by emulating one of THE disco queens.

If you want to show a character from a different country -

Like India for example, a good place to start is watching a video about the history of India, then watching a vlog from someone in India (in the area you're thinking of), then watch a video about Indian fashion, or indian street food, or indian family traditions - so you can sprinkle those details into the story or conversation. Then you can build from there. Big tip: If they're from the city watch a video about the city's transit/subway system if they have one. It's a VERY fast way to learn the city, and make it sound like they actually live there, even if you're just name dropping stations and town squares.

If you want to show a character with a mental illness, disability or condition -

Start off by searching the background of the condition. Have a doctor break down what it is, how it effects the body, the mind, or both. Then watch a video of an average person with the condition, and their experience day to day. Then try and find a specific advocate, celebrity, or influence who goes into depth about it and how they empower themselves.

If you want to show someone from a different religion -

Watch a video about the beliefs of the religion, then the history of the religion, then a video of someone who practices the religion.

ETC-

Now disclaimer, this won't make you actually know everything about the topic - but at the very least, you'll probably be using the terms and words right. And you might be able to think up your own thought from there.

I used this ALL THROUGH High School.

If I know next class is about Marie Antoinette - yeah sure lemme go run and learn about her life history, her fashion taste, and the architecture of the Palace of Versailles in an hour.

Now I can talk about her childhood, personality, and where she lived.

The Great Gatsby? Never read it and I never will. The movie? NEVER SEEN IT. I searched up the history/inspiration of the author, watched a video on the book's plot and symbolism, then watched a video on the book vs the movie.

From there I kinda understood what the book was about, why the author might have written it, the symbolic ho-ha, and the extra details as if I watched the movie too.

And from there I could formulate whether I think the symbolism matters to our modern day society and why the director changed small details from the book, and etc, etc.

It was enough for me to bullshit and say words and usually people are like 'yeah you seem to be making sense' lol

HELL throw in ANOTHER video about the lives of women in the 1920's and I could probably bullshit an argument on how the Great Gatsby reflects gender roles in the Flapper Era. Like gun to my head I could probably come up with something im so deadass

HEY IM NOT SAYING SLACK OFF IN SCHOOL OKAY - DO NOT THIS IS JUST MY TESTIMONIAL - USE THIS TO LEARN TOPICS NOT BOOKS ITS A GREAT TOOL

Also disclaimer: use this for good don't be walking around like you Know Know Shit cause someone might check you and then i cant help you this is just a way to understand the basis of topics and be able to form thoughts and hold conversations about them or use them in your art and writing.

Plus it's a great way to gather strong resources for your art and writing.

It's a lot easier to show characters in a natural accurate way when you've curated a very rounded understanding of the topic or era - not just in an educational historical sense.

For the purposes of character creation, essays, sounding like you know anything in conversations - this does help. And you do start absorbing stuff. It's just about breaking the topic down, and learning about it in blocks.

If you understand the history, you can understand the now, and if you understand the now, you can understand the nuance. Like that.

AS FOR THE SEWER QUESTION IM GLAD YOU ASKEDDD I made the entire turtle lair in the sims bc of this ask SO here we are,

The entrance to the sewers is pretty basic, shoot off to 6 open rooms,

Splinters room!! He's a pretty solitary guy so he has a place for meditation and a cozy lil chair he falls asleep in constantly.

Here's the rec room/kitchen, Lotta areas for food making and eating, and a piano Mikey plays every now and again for everyone! They also have a dinky little TV set donnie managed to snag. (Infront the couch)

The dojo!! Pretty basic, this is where the boys do their training!

The bathroom/storage! Very rustic and stolen and or built by Donatello. Lotta extra stuff splinter brought over from japan and misc living stuff for the family.

Now for the boys rooms!!!

Leo and Donatello share a room, leo keeps model trains and tons of books donnie can't house on his side, he's also got several Japanese tapestries to keep in touch with his heritage. He also has alot of art deco posters, he enjoys the colors and movement of them. He also keeps track of scout badges he's collected, because while be can't BE a boyscout, he loves the idea of scouting and following that code of values.

Donnies side is much more technical. He tinkers and builds things while listening to the radio, he'll turn it on for both him and Leo while they do respective activities. He also has Japanese tapestries, mostly because when the boys were small splinter got them each their own, and he never took it down. He's got tons of books and maps, and more physics leaning posters.

On the other side of the sewer, Raphel and Mikey share a room, in the middle they have a Foosball table they both enjoy from time to time, but on raphs side, he's got a punching bag (go figure) and a stereo radio phonograph, along with a chest of his things, his favorite stuffed toy, some art deco posters and a painting Mikey made him, along with a portrait of Casey, and a cow skull. He's taken the tapestry splinter gave him down. Says it clashes with the rest.

And last but not least! Mikey has the brightest part of the sewer, he enjoys plants, and taking care of them, he says they add life to the home. Along with several paintings he's done and art deco posters he enjoys! He's got a desk for Journaling and an easel for his portraits. He's also got his Japanese tapestry hung, it gives him inspiration.

All and all, not too different from their modern counterparts! I tried to make my little diorama art project as time period accurate as I could, for the sims yknow, but I think I did a pretty good job expressing my vision (although there was a sewer grate I COULD NOT find for the life of me so I just pretended don't look at it too hard)

April and casey visit on occasion, after all the portrait of Casey was painted by mikey!! Raph just felt... sentimental about keeping it. April visits less, due to grime, but she cares about her friends and can look past it after a good shower.

AND DONT YOU WORRY- I'll make a shredder tattoo masterpost, he's not covered head to toe, but he's pretty well inked up..

It had been about two weeks since you found Kang at the crash site. Despite the moment you two had when you first fixed him up, you two had very little interactions since then. It made sense though. Your eyes still haven’t entirely adjusted to the dark, but you think you have a pretty good standing of your ground. That is until you trip over the back of the couch. Secularization theory is a sociological theory which was originally thought up by Emile Durkheim. It basically says that as a society gets more modern, the religiosity of the people in that society declines, eventually leading to the complete disappearance of religion.

This theory was based on several inaccurate assumptions. Namely: people are less religious now than they were in the past, and scientific thought will inevitably lead to a decline in religious belief. As it turns out, neither of these assumptions are accurate...

But because this theory was introduced in the early days of sociology, it was just kind of accepted as fact even though there was no data to really support it.

Over time sociologists began doing studies on religiosity and found some major flaws in secularization theory. There wasn't evidence to support its conclusions despite decades of study, new religious movements continued to emerge in societies which were supposedly secularized, and religion remained an important influence in politics globally.

Anyways, Mirage Ultrakill strikes me as the kind of person who would hear about secularization theory and get excited because she's a bit of an asshole who thinks that religious belief is a comfort blanket shielding people from reality. Basically: Mirage Ultrakill strikes me as a reddit atheist.

This doodle is right next to my notes on a concept coined by Thomas Luckmann called "invisible religion".

Don't get me wrong, Luckmann has made great contributions to sociology. He wrote The Social Construction of Reality which was hugely influential and also good shit. But... invisible religion does not make sense to me.

Rather than using a more accepted definition of religion, Luckmann made his own which asserted that religion is thought or action above an animal level. So, dear reader, if you are transcending your biological nature, then you are doing a religion. Eating with a fork? That's religion. Reading words? Religion.

To be fair to Luckmann, he was writing Invisible Religion at a time when Secularization theory was still widely accepted. At the time it was also believed that religion acted as the social glue that held society together, so Luckmann was trying to explain why society wouldn't fall apart as religion disappeared. And his explanation was that actually being human is religion.

But yeah, I reckon Mirage Ultrakill would be mean to him.

This doodle is next to my notes on pluralism (pretty much just multiple religions existing in the same time/place). Specifically next to a section referring to pluralism as a "marketplace of ideas" which is a phrase I've heard far far too many libertarians throw around.

So basically, this doodle was a visceral reaction to seeing the phrase "marketplace of ideas". Honestly, it makes sense as a metaphor in this context as long as it isn't extended to far.

This doodle was next to my notes on a section of my textbook that was talking about medieval monks (honestly why it was talking about that isn't too important, it was just some stuff about discrediting secularization theory). Anyway, did you know that a lot of Monasteries also brew a lot of beer and have done so since the Middle Ages? I think that's cool.

Anyway, this doodle happened because I was bored and Mirage Ultrakill strikes me as an underage drinker (which you minors out there should not be doing btw, it doesn't end well).

tbh i do all my shading purely based on vibes/what makes me happy so im not sure im a good advice person but ill show you a breakdown of how i go about shading and hopefully that might help a bit? :o i've left it below the cut because i have too much to say and it ended up being really long LOL

okay SO ill use this asmo as my example, i think there's enough to talk about here that it should be helpful hopefully

so here's my lineart and flats! i do all my flat colours in one layer because i find it easier to make everything look more cohesive when the pieces arent separated (i usually like it when the colours bleed into each other a lil), but i also just dont like the process of having to switch between layers for everything too LOL flats are unfortunately my least favourite part :,D probably because my lineart is so messy hahah

as you can see, the shading is very minimal here, just some subtle stuff in the wings/sheer parts of the fabric and some blushing on the skin, i also stole the orange under eye/liner thing from TBHK because <3

and then i clean up any messy stuff by just painting over top of everything on a new layer, i also rendered the metal at this stage because i felt like it i guess???

i dont think i did a suuper good job at rendering the metal here (because i was lazy), it looks fine but something to note about metal is that usually you want to push the highlights and the shadows a lot more, as well as the reflections because it is so shiny and smooth this is why you'll see a lot of pink and blue in the metal, to show the reflections of his hair and the sky

i would recommend using reference to get a better idea of how metal ACTUALLY works but again, i was lazy lol so that's a simple explanation based on what little i know/have observed

the jump here is a bit drastic and you might be like woah starr where'd all this come from?? but this is all in one layer-

this is how that layer looks as a normal full opacity layer, for reference:

lately i've been using hard light layers to shade! they're very versatile because unlike multiply layers i can do my shading and my highlights within one layer (do you sense a theme of me disliking having too many layers lmao)

SO this is where i have a bit more to say about shading you'll notice the prominent shading colour here is blue, this is because the main environment here (the sky) is blue. i dont know if that's how things work in the real world but it works for me LMAO i usually prefer to have my shading lean cooler purely for aesthetic reasons, i like how it looks more

you might also notice some areas where the blue is a bit brighter, this is to imitate reflected light, again because the environment is blue light tends to bounce around on things and reflect back even into the shadows so this is the effect im trying to get, i like to typically go with a brighter blue cause it gives things a sort of shinier? quality that i enjoy aesthetically, idk if its very accurate to real life tho it also helps me to give depth to the shading since shading isnt usually just one flat blob, and this is a bit of a shortcut to having more dynamic (?) looking shadows

i also want to point out my use of bright reds on the edge of the shadows:

i believe this is called diffraction- there's a real legit scientific reason why it happens but i... dont know what that is i just know it happens in real life (maybe not to this extent?) and it looks cool so i do it SFHJKSFH i usually blend it into the shadows though as opposed to into the lighter parts, i find that tends to look better

some miscellaneous things-

don't be afraid to throw random colours around!! who cares about realism, it's fun lmao

this artwork is a spoiler for asmo's bday so shhhhh but i did want to quickly show that you can also use hard light layers to create a glowy effect, i literally just painted the pink/orange directly on the shadows layer and it helped to make his eyes more glowy

of course i do go in and paint over a little after and add some layer effects but it helps to have that base there

it hit me some of my newer followers probably dont know about the petscop "logbook!" (i dont remember why i called it that)

since august of 2023, ive been taking detailed notes on petscop. not continuously since sometimes ill take a couple weeks off while i soak things in, but ive so far taken notes up to like 2/3 of the way thru petscop 11. its been quite the undertaking. every single time i rewatch it, i find more i didnt notice the last time, or stuff that didnt make sense without some context in another video later on down the line.

ive had to add addendums over pages and the whole thing is full of sticky notes. my friend called it my mad scientist notebook bc it rly does just look crazy lol. i started it mostly for another friend since we were originally analyzing it together, so theres a lot of spelling errors.

the sticky notes are usually from where i thought of smth when i didnt have the notebook on me, i actually have a shit ton of stuff i wrote on receipt paper bc id still be thinking abt it at work. some stuff here isnt too accurate anymore, but going back to correct things why this has been taking me so long. 🥲

im in so deep that ive had to get another notebook, ive read scientific papers for this and everything. from psychology to the spatial uncanny valley paper to PHYSICS. ROTATIONAL PHYSICS. i am physically incapable of being normal about petscop

yes, a woman can pass as male and perform masculinity perfectly and still be a woman... dressing like a man and having a man's name etc. is not what makes a man a man. it doesn't make a woman or girl a man, either.

i think if you truly read my post you're referring to, you'd know that i know "woman" absolutely does not simply mean "can bear children". obviously that isn't entirely accurate. a more accurate statement would be something like "women, not men, are the ones with the ability to bear children, even if an individual herself cannot".

my point was that women and girls are those of us born female (or maybe you'd rather say "assigned female at birth". same thing either way, i guess) and our femaleness does not limit anything about ourselves. a woman can wear whatever she wants, including traditionally masculine clothing. a woman can go to a men's barber and get a men's haircut. she's still a woman. any amount of surgery, hrt, name changes, wardrobe change, personality changes, etc, will not magically or scientifically or spiritually turn a woman into a male. you are born female and will be female until long after you are dead. it's not how you identify, it's what you are.

and that's a good thing! being a woman is amazing. unfortunately society is extremely misogynistic and pretty much sexualizes us from birth. but the best thing you can do for yourself as a young woman is to take care of yourself! embrace your body because your body is you. it's all you've got! you don't have a male soul, you don't have a male mind, you don't have a male personality, you don't have a male body. that's impossible. you're a woman! and that means no limits! being female does not limit you! it does not mean you have to be feminine, it does not mean that when you conform to male standards that you are male. it means you're you, you're a woman/girl, and that's wonderful!

womanhood isn't something you can take comfort in. it's not something you can identify into/out of. it's not being totally feminine and wearing makeup and dresses and having long styled hair and being submissive to men. womanhood is being a woman. and a woman is an adult human female.

As someone who as a background in machine learning and data science I find Yves to be one of my favorite OCs in a very long time. The fact that he has these models that are able to predict his darlings next move is super interesting given how extremely hard it is to accurately predict human behavior.

I mean like the volumes of data would have to be extremely extensive and extremely detailed in order to pass that through a machine and get an accurate output and in a way,, it kind of scares me and excites me at the same time. As the reader, you are apart of the ultimate Turing test! Dude could probably make scientific breakthroughs with his models! Government agencies are possibly looking for such technology and here Yves goes just casually using it on this one person that just happens to occupy his mind 24/7 LMFAO!

Also like there’s a part of me that likes to think that there’s a fantastical side to all of this, that his predictive “mind reading” skills aren’t just tethered to his computer in his office or library and that he also just has that IN him, maybe it’s the just the fact that throughout what it seems like decades he was able to gain enough knowledge to be a walking talking human computer genius or maybe something a bit more super natural I mean you did say he was human once 🫣,,,

It is late and im ill at home so hyper specific rant coming up!

Shout out to field archaeologists who measure, those who conquered the gps/rts/total station. You are the backbone that is making it into a science.

I dont know how it is in other parts in the world but here, there is sometimes a stigma that the measuring pal is not doing real archaeology or as heavy a job as other fieldworkers because we are not constantly churning the dirt.

I would also like to scratch in the ground and scream out when I find cool stuff but I have less oprtunity cuz I´m too busy screaming at people to put their finds in bags and write down where it came from. Cuz guess what, your cool complete ceramic vessel? Useless, without its exact provenance. Throw it on the dump if you cant be bothered to care about registration!

´oh no i shant touch the gps, i´ll break it' well you wouldnt if you would take time to learn it. Might also make my job easier if you knew what goes into it all. ´cant you measure any faster?´ no i can measure as fast as technology allows me. Either you wait or you figure out the site without any carthographic data? no? Thought so.

Couple weeks ago a coworker came to me saying ´as the one measuring a site, i feel as the lowest lifeform present on the dig. No one asks if it´s going well or if i need help or how much time i am going to need. They just want everything done at once as fast as possible even though they forget to properly label shit half of time´. And i could relate to that. Since very few people know what you are doing exactly, nobody cares or offers help. They are just digging, throwing open bigger and bigger patches of dirt so they can say they excavated the largest amount of m2. At the end of the day they put away their shovel and expect everyone to do the same but the measurer? Still gotta work cuz you kept going till the last minute and there 10+ m2 left to register and 5 finds have no labels. Can´t leave them here for every passerby to just pick them up. And measure the rest later? What if it rains? What if a treasure hunter shows up digging holes in the night destroying the level with nothing left to register?

Where would you be without accurate measuring and registration? Right, nowhere cuz you would have lost all scientific validation.

So please, shows some appreciation for your local gps-archaeologists. They work just as hard and are just as tired or cold as any other fieldworker. Show some patience if things go not as fast as you´d like and ask if there is anything that might help like changing the excavation partition or asking someone to precheck all finds and features so they don´t lose time, hold an umbrella if it rains on a finnicky touchscreen, etc.

Is there anyone here who can relate? How is it in other parts of the world, im really curious!
