can i enquire your opinion on what i perceive as misuse of the words "zhiji" / "zhiyin" by western authors? it's often translated as soulmates, or even used synonymously, and for wx, often in romantic situations to fulfil non romantic soulmate fic tropes. i often get a bit frustrated by it. zhiji and zhiyin are both bosom friends, people who get you, appreciate you but they are not the western term of soulmates. what do you think? seeking perspectives to shape my opinion!!! thank you!!

First of all, for those who are reading this and not nonny, i’m assuming you are either familiar with chinese or have read the blog post by @/hunxi-guilai by now. If you are not chinese and/or have not read her blog, go to her blog and go to linguistic meta and then read the post titled “ all right guys, let’s have a conversation about soulmates ” (gonna delete the link if i can’t get this to show up in tags since this is a nonny ask i want nonny to be able to find this... )

ok. now that we’re on the same page, let’s talk about translation. translation is messy. cultures don’t have the same concepts. when expressing words as complex as 知己/ 知音, you do what you can. 

do i think soulmates is an acceptable translation? yes. i would not hesitate to call wangxian soulmates. 

Is 知己/ 知音 inherently romantic? no.

do i think the connotations of 知己/知音 and the connotations of soulmates match perfectly? no. 

am i fine with fanfiction authors writing what they want? yeah. if i don’t like it, i just won’t engage with the material. it’s the idgaf of old age that i’m really glad i acquired. i can just nope right out and go find something i prefer. e.g. if i see a baobei in a wangxian fic, i usually nope right now. it’s not worth getting worked up over. lol. 

yes 知己/ 知音 are bosom friends but it’s deeper than that, right? 

Actually, i’m really glad i’ve waited. I’ve just binged Word of Honor (or what eps are currently out) and they toss out 知己/ 知音 a lot -- as they should. The show is spectacular (thus far 25 of 36 eps are out and i am dying at how amazing the main CP interactions are). Basically my heart is full of  知己/ 知音 mood so i think i can do a better job of explaining what it means to me now. 

To me, 知己/ 知音 is knowing someone/hearing someone so deeply that your souls are in sync. It’s being open and vulnerable. The mortifying ordeal of being KNOWN and/or HEARD. it’s joyous to discover that your eccentricities are understood implicitly. it’s stolen cheeky grins and stupid laughs that makes you feel alive again. It’s precious and rare and if you get one person in your life that REALLY knows/hears or tries to know/to hear you, you are lucky. this can be part of a romantic or platonic relationship. 

someone wants to call that a soulmate? sure. by all means. 

But if I were to see it in a novel or show I was trying to translate, I may translate it differently each time. The beauty of translation is, as the translator, I have the power (and the terrible responsibility) to interpret a work. My choices will be the text moving forward. My diction, if the only translation around, could be overanalyzed by a portion of the fandom. So would i always translate  知己/ 知音 as soulmates? no. Sometimes I might say say, “You’re the only person to know me truly.” or “To be truly heard in this life by one person is enough.” or I might say “soulmate” sometimes. 

so, i guess i do agree that soulmates limits the translation of the concept. but if you’re watching a show and there are subs, the subbers have more than meaning to worry about. you have to consider characters per second: 1) physically focusing on words with one’s eyes and then reading them takes time; 2) some people are much slower readers than others. (subbers also have to consider sentence structure and how to breakup a lines. and, depending on the show, sometimes the subs come out at an INSANE pace. it’s approximately 3-4 hrs of translation work once you have the chinese in front of you for a 20ish min ep if you’re being neurotic and probably just as much if not more of timing work to get an episode out. not to mention the translation checks and quality checks. so sometimes shortcuts are required... but i digress...) Is soulmates a good, succinct way to get the message across? yes. so i’m fine with it. and if it captures peoples’ imagination and brings someone joy, then even better. 

fandom should be fun. it should be happy. it should be a place where you grow and meet people that bring you joy. :) so am i upset that it’s the preferred translation of the mdzs/cql fandom? not really. it’s not perfect but it’s good enough for fandom (and horseshoes and hand grenades as people would say).

Well, this post has been made countless times, but I’m making one too because I’ve seen a lot of people say they’re new to tumblr and don’t know the whole “reblogging is better than liking” rule and other stuff. So without any further ado, here are ways YOU can support the fanfiction authors. Now keep in mind this applies to almost every author out there, not just the stayblr fandom, so if you’re a silent reader (or even if you aren’t), I advise you go through this post. Warning, this is a fairly long post going into detail, so yeah. I still expect you, the readers to read this, and if you’re a writer, feel free to lmk if i’ve written smth wrong or if you want me to add something! ^^

In this post I’ll go into thorough analysis of the pros and cons of each of the methods listed here and how YOU as a reader can show the authors whose fics you read more love and motivate them to produce content.

WARNING; LONG POST! GOES INTO A DECENT AMOUNT OF DETAIL. NOT EDITED, EXCUSE ANY TYPOS.

#1 : LIKING !

I think this is basic common knowledge, and a lot of people tend to do this. When you like the post, the author sees it, you see it, and if the author has their liked posts accessible (which majority of the time they don’t), and if someone deliberately goes to check it, then they see it. See why so many authors say just liking does nothing? Only liking says “Hey, I’m gonna tell you your story is not that good by simply liking it and not sharing it with other people. :D”

♯ PROS:

You’re telling the author that you've read their fic, and either you’ve enjoyed it to a certain extent, or you’re just saving it to read for later.

Likes are seen by you, the author and anyone who has access to your likes (which, most people don’t).

♯ CONS:

If you ONLY like, you’re not really helping the author’s work reach a wide audience because this site isn’t Instagram. Reblogging is the only way people can SEE our works. I’ll cover more on that in the next section.

In a nutshell, liking is good! But you should most likely use it in a combination with the other stuff I’ve listed below, because just the like itself doesn’t really do much in giving the author any feedback or interaction on their fics.

To clear shit up; I’m not talking about those people who don’t read the story or appreciate it in the first place. I’m talking about those who appreciate the fic, like it, but don’t leave any sort of feedback to show that.

#2 : REBLOGGING !

This is SO, SO important. I cannot stress on this enough. Let me explain WHY so many writers stress on reblogging content: 

Tumblr’s tag system is inherently fucked up, and has grown more so over the year. I’m not kidding, at first, the fic either used to show up in the tags or it didn’t, but now, sometimes your fic can be REMOVED from the tags because of,,, idk tumblr tag shit. Anyways, as you can see, it’s very demotivating for authors at that point, because the major way for people to find their content and expand their blogs has been blocked.  

Due to this reason, tumblr authors need to RELY on you, their followers to help spread their works to a wider audience. Now again, before you get me wrong, I’m not saying you ae forced to rb our works regardless of whether you like them or not. BUT, that being said, if you DO infact like the story, there’s no harm in reblogging, right? By doing this you’re indirectly telling the author — “hey! :D I liked your fic! Which is why I am gonna share it to my followers so they can read it too :D” Trust me, you’re doing nothing but helping the people who produce content for you to read. Seems like a worthy cause to hit the reblog button, right? It’s only a one, or maximum two step procedure.

Leave tags in your reblogs! Trust me, as an author myself and as much as I know from all my author friends, we oft check the tags of your reblogs to see if you found any part amazing or even if you have anything to say about the writing we put so much hard work into. Even a key smash or a “This was so [insert adjective] 🥺” is enough to leave a smile on your authors face. 

♯ PROS :

You’re !! Sharing !! Your authors !! Works !! This leads to them getting more recognition, so for the content they’re so graciously providing for free, you’re promoting their blog and helping them expand it.

If the tags are being a shit, which majority of the time they are, then you’re literally making an author’s day by reblogging! You’re showing them that you, a follower and appreciator of their works are willingly sharing their content because it deserves to be seen by more people. Again before any dumb people decide to attack me, i am talking about people who like the fic but don't bother reblogging and are silent/ghost readers. I am not forcing anyone to read anybody’s work.

YOU’RE MAKING YOUR AUTHOR SO HAPPY WHAT MORE REASONS COULD YOU POSSIBLY WANT !! 🥺

♯ CONS :

Literally none, because as far as I remember no author is against reblogging of their works. It’s quite literally the way this platform functions. Reblogging is IMPORTANT.

#3 : COMMENTING/SENDING FEEDBACK !

This kind of overlaps with the previous section, but THIS IS SUCH AN IMPORTANT STEP !! When you leave feedback, you are directly giving the author something so much more valuable to them than high follower/note counts or money. Your feedback is literally our serotonin. I kid you not the number of times I’ve received a positive comment and smiled and it has made my day. There’s a reason youtubers (though not the best example, bear with me here because it was the only one I could think of) ask people to subscribe, like and COMMENT. The subscription is like a follow, the like is ofc like a heart, and the comment is equivalent to an rb with comments in the tags. 

You might argue and tell me that a comment is basically like an ask so the reblogging step isn’t necessary, but I’m sure 99% of you use YouTube and you know that more comments leads to people’s videos boosted in the stream/trending charts. This is what reblogging does. Reblogging shares the piece with other people like minded, which leads to a boost in reads. You are literally helping your author grow.

It’s quite literally the same thing as youtubers. Youtubers NEED validation to keep their content creation going, so do writers, so do other ccs on this site. This post is however, focused on WRITERS, so keep that in mind.

♯ PROS :

By doing this, you’re giving author valuable feedback! It’s similar to what you do in rbing with tags. Interactivity with their fics boosts their note counts and helps expand their audience, so srsly, now think of it: your one comment is playing such a massive role to help ccs create more content.

Imagine how much of a difference the note counts will be in when every person who simply likes after reading the fic, reblogs, leaves a comment and sends an ask. the note counts would be high on each and every fic, which is validation in itself, but your comments would inspire the writer so much more! Please, don’t skip the commenting part. Even a simple one like: “this is so cute!” is wonderful. 

♯ CONS :

Remember, if you’re gonna give constructive criticism (which I’m sure you all are smart enough to know if different from hate), make sure the author is okay with it. Authors need to be in a specific mindset and must be ready to accept criticism, so if you’re gonna give constructive criticism to them when they’re at a low point, it may demotivate them.

Just commenting, instead of reblogging and commenting in the tags/ reblogging and then leaving an ask in their inbox, while it gives validation in plenty, will not lead to the author’s work being spread. Therefore I suggest either reblogging and commenting in the tags or reblog and then leave an ask, or comment under the fic!

!! reminder; I am not saying that if you don’t rb and just leave feedback, your feedback has no value. We authors truly appreciate every bit of feedback, but this post is aimed to help you learn how to interact with and support authors, and make them feel more motivated, because the current scenario of liking and scrolling is taking a toll on their creative abilities. Take it from a person who’s been writing for a year.

#4 : COMMSIONING VIA THEIR KO-FI/OTHER APPS !

Before any of you attack me, let me tell you that this is not a step that is 100% necessary to do. ONLY donate if you can and if you genuinely want to, and if anyone is forcing you to pay for something against your will, you need to get yourself out of there.

Regardless, if an author has a kofi and you’re able to and you want to donate, you definitely should! It’s also a valid form of support.

#5 : ADDING THEM ON REC LISTS/ RECOMMENDING THEM TO REC BLOGS

This is such an underrated option, to be honest. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve seen my fic was recommended onto some rec list and it’s made me smile so hard. If you like some fics, create a rec list! They’re oft very popular amongst the fans too. Making rec posts is such a great way to share your favorite stories with others. 

Rec blogs! I’ve seen a couple going around, and needless to say they are a great way to get someone else to read your favorite author’s work whilst also giving them your own feedback. These blogs oft accept recs via a form or ask box, and they leave your feedback along with their own, or else they’ll oft tag the author in the feedback post, so look! You’re basically helping your author share their fic to many more people, because you’ve given them feedback and a reblog.

♯ PROS :

Validation! Feedback! Reblogs! More exposure! Helping a blog grow! Spreading love! basically a run down of the stuff I’ve said before!

♯ CONS :

Literally no con of this. Unless, a one in a million case, this author says they don’t like receiving feedback/being tagged, and I’m sure NO person has said this before, at least none that I’ve heard of.

#6 : FINAL COMMENTS; MISC !

When an author points out about how the interactivity is drastically reducing, don’t just give them blind apologies. Yes, you feel sorry for not interacting as much, we understand, but rather show that you’ll become a better content consumer through your actions. We need to see that we’re not just throwing words into a void and that people are actually trying to be better content consumers. 

Understand the fact that authors don’t get paid for this, and 99% of the time, these authors don’t take commissions either. They’re giving you novel worthy writings for free. Take Percy Jackson: You think the author would have felt motivated to write the subsequent parts, let alone two whole series based off of it if literally no one showed that they were interested? Rick Riordan has sales, he is being paid, there are millions of people and big agencies who provide him feedback. Now take that huge amount and simmer it down to an audience of maybe 10000 people This is what fanfic authors want. They don’t want your money, nor are they telling you to risk your lives for them. All they want is, a reblog, some tags, some feedback, some INTERACTIVITY.  A sign that they aren’t throwing fics into the void and that people actually like them, some motivation to continue. Seems fairly easy to throw an rb with some tags, right?

Don’t bother to tell me that we do this for ourselves and we shouldn’t ask for likes and reblogs and feedback, because 1) you are consuming the content that we “write for ourselves” and 2) writers post their content here for interactivity and feedback. We could just not post and write and save our fics in our dungeon drafts for years. But we choose to post to entertain the readers, the consumers. And we aren’t even asking that much in return.

Don’t give me the whole “I’m scared that authors feel that comments are annoying” excuse either because seriously this has been DEBUNKED SO MANY TIMES. Istg, in the nicest way possible, if you still think writers are annoyed by interaction and feedback, after so many posts, long rants have been posted as to how we’re not, then you must truly be living under a rock. There, I said it. Please stop thinking this way, I’ll say it again, AUTHORS ARE NOT ANNOYED OF FEEDBACK, COMMENTS, TAGS, REBLOGS. WE LOVE IT. Saying this is like saying that the audience in a theatre play shouldn’t clap when the play ends because the actors would find it noisy. 🤡

I’ve seen some people saying they have anxiety issues and such, so pls note that I’m not invalidating your condition. If you’re trying to be more interactive, I really appreciate it! If you can’t, that’s fine too. You’re trying.

But for the people who have no reason other than feeling lazy to rb and comment, your lack of interactiveness is not excused. Please. Tumblr is a reblogging site. If you’re gonna consume content like authors are some sort of machines, I encourage you to go get some more perspective.

This site is not Instagram or the satan bird app. Your likes are appreciated but frankly speaking, they do nothing to the author except tell them “Hey i read ur fic but i'm not gonna support u :D” and honestly, that is detrimental to their creative capabilities and mental health. 

DON’T FOLLOW AN ACC JUST TO MINDLESS RB THEIR SIGNAL BOOST POSTS AND THEIR REBLOGS OF GIFS AND NOT INTERACT WITH THEIR WRITING AT ALL ! Trust me, authors prefer a lower amount of interactive followers than a high count that doesn’t even give them any feedback. Again your follows are appreciated, but when you’re following, you know the type of content the author creates, so the author expects that the more followers, the more interactivity. These days, this is just becoming the opposite. So don’t do it! If you’re gonna follow to read, interact with their works. I promise, this will make both you and the author happy. A win-win situation.

In conclusion: SUPPORT YOUR FUCKING AUTHORS! THEY ARE NOT MACHINES THAT HAVE NO FEELINGS TO PRODUCE CONTENT FOR YOU! FICS TAKE DAYS AND DAYS OF PLANNING, PLOTTING, OUTLINING, WRITING, EDITING, MAKING TEASERS. SO JUST SHOW THEM YOU APPRECIATE THEM WITH AN RB. IT’S THE L E A S T YOU CAN DO.

i’m having trouble writing a solid beginning even though i know where the story wants to go. any tips for that as well?

👋 hello and thank you!! It’s so 🥺 to get asked for writing tips I don’t even know what to say besides trying to get you something at least marginally useful.

I’m not anything close to professional at this, and since Where the Snow Takes Us was like my first ever long thing, the best I can do is share my experience and hope that it helps!

In no particular order…

What got me started writing fic was basically a whole lot of reading it. I read and read and read until I was blue in the face and found myself craving content that I couldn’t find. When the idea bunnies nagged me enough, I gave in and started writing that content myself.

Reading lots of fanfiction for your fandom also helps capture the essence of the characters. Reading their reactions to hundreds of unique situations builds up a cache in your head of things that make up who they are. You carry that inherent understanding with you always, so while writing you can ask yourself what you think they would do/feel in the situation you’ve created. It also helps me if I can correlate a character’s personality to a person I know in real life. They don’t have to be the exact same, of course. Even if you identify just a few similar personality traits between someone you know well and your character, then you can ask yourself what your reference person would do to inform the character’s reactions. Imagine and play out your character’s reactions, their thoughts and feelings, what they might think vs what they might verbalize, and everything that goes on internally before putting pen to paper.

Beginnings are hard. It’s just kind of an awkward situation in general bc you’re trying to rope someone into your brainscape from scratch. With fanfiction it’s easier bc you can assume your reader knows the characters and the basic tenets of the world from your tags.

Usually with beginnings I tend to think of a really mundane situation that will become unique because of the way the characters treat it or because of what I know will happen in the future. (In wtstu the beginning is really mundane - Korra is covering for a friend at work.) People experience things every day that are easy to write about and relate to - so if you start with something mundane that your readers can quickly connect with, that’s a decent place from which to launch the rest of your story.

Alternatively I have read and enjoyed many openings that are, for lack of a better phrase, “self-aware” in the sense that the story seems to knows it is a story and introduces itself as such. Beginnings like “it was an accident the first time they kissed. This is what happened.” Those are a very different style but really fun too!

Writing tips… there are so many to be given! Here are a few that I think about a lot:

Use a thesaurus! Great word alternatives abound and frequently you will find some that are a little more specific and a lot more expressive for what you want to say

Use action verbs. Specifically, edit out most uses of the verb “to be.” It may seem difficult at first, but I suggest writing an excerpt and then going back and replacing all instances of “is.” Then reread and see if it sounds more polished. (Some other examples of using action verbs: “befriend” instead of “make friends with” OR “felt” instead of “could feel” OR “attacked” instead of “was attacking”)

Focus on maintaining a consistent verb tense. Personally I find it really distracting as a reader when a story slips from present tense to past tense and back again. So I always make an active effort to check and recheck and make sure I stay in the same tense. Usually when reading thru my own stuff, I always end up correcting some unintentional tense changes—they can happen really sneakily, so don’t feel bad if you find it in your work!

Flow is key. I reread my stuff a dozen times (not sure if that’s healthy but I’m a perfectionist and can’t let things go) and avoid excessive repetition of words, names, or sentence structure — all of those things can render the story monotonous or repetitive. I often remove details that at first glance seem important but actually detract from the main story or scene. Extra details can feel like bumps in an otherwise direct road and break the reader’s focus. Keeping those details in your head as an author adds a lot of depth to the writing, but know that the depth will come through even if all the background knowledge doesn’t make it into the words. What “flows” for you will be unique, but I suggest (if you have time) reading through your work and evaluating if it flows smoothly and without distraction.

Write what you want to read (or write). Don’t write for other people or what you think will get the most attention—if you’re not into the story, it’ll come off flat and uninteresting (because your own interest isn’t there to shine through!) Fanfic is most often a hobby, so do it for you.

Lastly, there are writing tip blogs to follow on tumblr! I recently discovered this and have been enjoying them a whole hell of a lot. Like lyralit, whose top posts have a ton of concrete examples of some of the tips above. Go scroll thru that blog and other related posts like this.

Please don't take this the wrong way but someone who has very little time to read fics I'm used to browsing bookmarks and I appreciate a lot when someone does a fic review, which doesn't mean they should bash it of course but sometimes it really would've saved me time if I had listened to a couple of them. Again, I don't mean for reviewers to do it in poor taste and overly critically, but anyway, I hope you understand what I mean. Thank you for this blog and all the effort you put in it ❤️

Good morning, my dear.  I have strong opinions about AO3 bookmarks, and they’ve actually evolved over time as I learned more about AO3, its features, and the community as a whole.

You’re right, of course.  It’s very useful to other readers to see a frank assessment of a fic they may or may not want to commit to.  I often cruise bookmarks before diving into a work, to see what other readers think.

But,

in balance against what the author feels when they read it, that benefit shrivels. Fanfiction is not the same as books on Amazon or Goodreads. The authors are a part of your community. They are your peers and your friends, your mentors and your ducklings. The absolutely massive effort of churning out a fic is done solely out of love (if not for you, than of the topic). An author of fanfic makes no profit, gains no material recompense other than people saying Thank you.

Authors of fanfic can be from any walk of life. You don't know whether they are very young, very old, peeking for the first time into your culture, in perilous mental or physical health. Your critical words can and do wound them, possibly inflicting damage far beyond what you imagine you might feel if you were in their place.

I am lucky in that I am an author as well as a reader, so I understand both points of view.

So the question is: how do you balance these conflicting needs?

I think the answer is pretty simple. Stay positive. If your review is negative or critical, mark it Private. Go bitch about that story on your blog (without tags, please, no need to bring the author's attention to it) if you need to.

If you hate the story, or found problems with it, don't make a public bookmark and don't leave kudos. That in itself tells the reader (and the author) what they need to know, if they see a fic with many, many hits and no bookmarks. And if the fic is good but you have to wade through 6 chapters of scene setting to get to the good stuff, you can simply leave a positive bookmark and a reader will know that they should carry on through the initial portion because there's something there good enough for you to make a bookmark. There's no need to even have bookmarks like, "slow start, but stick with it - it gets better".

Writers are ripping themselves wide open when they write and post their stories. They are skinless - all exposed nerves with no protection. That's their guts out there, that you're analyzing; their bare, beating heart in your hands. You may believe they should have thicker skin, but unfortunately, you can't make that happen any more than they can.

It costs you nothing to be generous, and a lack of a positive bookmark can tell other readers what you think without inflicting untold damage on a vulnerable stranger.

This will be my final post addressing the fandom conflict that has quite frankly gotten out of hand. Although it’s very likely this post will be picked apart, no matter how well intended it is, I will no longer be addressing, interacting, or responding to any further accusations made against me. Of course, if people have questions from a genuine place of interest, I will be happy to clarify anything for you, either via DM’s or non-anon asks. I will not be answering anonymous asks on this, as I do not want anything else posted on this topic. 

As a side note: For anyone tempted to wade into the debate, I sincerely ask you not to get involved. Do not make yourself a target, do not feel you need to ‘pick a side’, and please do not think you have an obligation to reason with either side. It seems to be well past the point of that, so please find people you get along with in this fandom and curate a space for yourself away from all this conflict.

To start off, I want to apologise to everyone who has somehow gotten drawn into this mess by either defending me, following me, or interacting with my content. This whole situation with me began well over a year ago when I wrote a crack-smut fic featuring Javier/Micah, posted back in August 2019. A crack fic is defined as “a work of fan fiction that is absurd, surprising or ridiculous, often intentionally.” It was inspired by a camp interaction between Micah and Javier, and like many other fanfiction writers, I decided to write smut about it. The fic was titled ‘Dirty Fucking Greaser’, and if that shocks you, I’m sure you can imagine how shocked I was to be informed afterwards that ‘Greaser’ was in fact a very serious 19th century slur for a Mexican individual. My first encounter with this word as insult was via RDR2, where it was used like a very casual insult. My only prior knowledge of this term was in regards to the greasers youth subculture, so the severity was lost on me. This obviously does not excuse my ignorance, and I should have researched the term better, but this is just again to apologize for that oversight, the insensitivity, and to highlight that my use of this term was not meant maliciously. Following this being pointed out, I proceeded to make 3 separate apology posts [Unfortunately I can only find the third one: HERE], renamed the fic, and added slur warnings in both the tags and the fic description. When I continued to receive complaints and increasingly aggressive abuse (which included being told my apologies weren’t good enough and I should delete my account and even kill myself), I attempted to delete the fic and mistakenly abandoned it instead. I contacted AO3 to see if it could be removed, but they said there was nothing they could do. I contacted their DMCA takedown team, who also said they couldn't remove it. Please note that all this happened 7-8 months ago, and has been dragged on for almost a year. 

So, from this one unfortunate incident, I’ve been branded a racist, and someone who attacks POC, when all I have done is tried to defend myself and correct my past mistakes. I could have done this more gracefully in the past, but frankly when you’re suddenly the target of unrelenting callout posts and nasty anons, it’s very hard to be open to criticism of this sort, but this is what I’m trying to move past.

Over the course of the year, this one mistake has spiralled, and the crusade against me has somehow coincided with moral conflicts over certain characters and ships. This has devolved into dehumanizing abuse, witch hunts, death threats, doxxing, anon hate, and much more unpleasant behaviour.

I have been in fandom for a very long time, and at the heart of all fandom circles is the fear of censorship and subsequent purges, so the ‘ship and let ship’ mentality was more or less the pinnacle of fandom philosophy. And yes, this can be problematic in some contexts. People have their right to be uncomfortable with content, have a right to be offended by content, but that is not content meant for you. This argument has devolved into ‘what material is morally right to engage with’ and that is a mentality in which fandom will not survive, because for every person who is telling me I’m an awful person for writing about Micah, there are three other people telling me how much they appreciate me making that content. For every fic in which I characterize Javier and Flaco a certain way, some people are made uncomfortable by it and others tell me they enjoy it. And this isn’t just white people, but POC too, which makes it very difficult to know whether I am genuinely in the right or the wrong, especially when it comes to the concept of ‘fetishization’ which I have been made aware I need to educate myself on. I intend to do so, but I disagree with the common accusation that finding non-white men romantically and sexually attractive is inherently fetishistic and makes me racist. It’s pushing a catch-22; don’t find POC sexually attractive? Racist. Find POC sexually attractive? Racist.

I am always willing to be (politely) approached about anything my readers may be concerned about, but if it’s something I’ve specifically tagged for (such as themes, scenarios, etc.) I’m afraid you consented to reading it and with that I cannot help you. You are just as responsible for curating your space and what you see/read just as much as I am responsible for tagging it appropriately.  

On the topic of racism, I want to bring up my prior use of ‘white racism’ which has obviously been a point of contention among both white and people of colour. The (literal) black vs white concept of racism is incredibly American-centric, and as someone from Europe, which has a history of oppression against white cultures and those of people of colour, it feels inaccurate. However, this has recently been discussed with me and I came to the realization that while growing up, especially in the UK, ‘xenophobia’ and ‘racism’ were marketed as one and the same. So, with this little revelation in mind, I will no longer be using ‘white racism’ (Or ‘reverse racism’) to identify the abuse I have been receiving, but will instead call it by what it really is; dehumanizing, debasing, xenophobic, puritanical.   

Very briefly, I will also touch on the NewAustin situation, which has also been dredged into this. I did not ‘chase a POC from tumblr’. NA was a minor who for some reason was on my 18+ blog and took issue with me, likely from the ongoing discourse regarding my fic and initial mistake, as well as my interest in Micah. They were subsequently harassed into deleting their account by anonymous hate following various conflicts with other users for their support of me or their ships in general. I have never encouraged my followers to target anyone, and have always asked to be blocked and blacklisted by those who do not like me or my content. When NewAustin messaged me following the deletion of their blog, I was admittedly indifferent to the point of being unkind, and accused them of sending the hate themselves. This was based on the anon hate being racially-driven without there being any prior knowledge or publication that NA was a person of colour. This aside, I should have at the time, whether I believed it was my followers or not, condemned this behaviour. Regardless of the issues I’ve had with these people, it is never ever ok to send hate to anyone, no matter the motivation behind it, and that should have been stated at the time.

All I can do at this point is acknowledged and apologize for my past mistakes, and try to improve myself going forward.  

It is not my place to dictate the morals of the character/ship-aspect of this argument, and I am not interested in waging a war of opinion. This post is simply to clarify how I am involved in this, and why I am so viscerally targeted. You can draw your own conclusions, but I am no longer interested in this endless back and forth.

To my mutuals/followers, I stand by my request to not interact and to block and move on, as this is what I’ll be doing too.

“Y/N.” Draco smiled walking over to you. You felt trapped under his gaze and all you could do was stand there staring, wishing you could have seen him any other time than while you just woke up and were brushing your teeth. “For a while I started to think you’d gone home for the holiday.” He explained when he reached you, his thumb coming up to wipe the toothpaste that was about to fall from your chin. “Here.” He smiled, holding his cup out for you, making your eyes go wide and you shook your head. 

No way were you going to embarrass yourself any further by spitting in the cup right in front of him. You tried to walk around him, but his hand holding your upper arm stopped you. 

“I’m not letting you go back into hiding.” He gave your bottom lip a nudge with the lip of the cup. You scrunched your nose up and shook your head, pushing the cup away with your chin. “Oh come on Y/N. It’s just toothpaste.” Draco sighed making your jaw clench. He kept eye contact with you while you finally let the toothpaste in your mouth dribble out into the cup, and you couldn’t help the embarrassed blush that was surely painting itself over your entire body.

“Happy?” You quipped once it was all out. “Draco?” You breathed out his name in a question when his thumb cleaned the corners of your mouth. “What are you doing?” You asked, taking a step back when he finally let your arm go.

“I wanted to talk to you.” Draco explained, and you nodded so he could continue. “I wasn’t going to be here for the holiday.” He started, making your eyebrows knit together. “But I know that you never go home during holidays because your parents always hang around mine and you’re never there.” He continued making you feel like you were punched in the gut.

“What’s your point?” You crossed your arms, pinching your elbow to keep your cool.

“So I decided to stay to talk to you.” He explained and you sighed.

“About?” You asked, digging your nails into your skin. Your parents weren’t ever something you liked talking about. The fact Draco pointed out the only reason they don’t want you home is because they don’t want you around the other pureblood families was definitely hitting a nerve.

“Your letter.” He answered making you nod.

“What about my letter?” You asked, trying to have him get to the point. You felt like you’d been standing there for longer than needed for the short conversation that hadn’t seemed to go anywhere just yet.

“Well.” Draco started, taking a step closer causing you to stumble back a step. “Maybe about what you said.” He continued. “You know… about my eyes.” He smiled, staring at you. You couldn’t help but bite your bottom lip in anticipation, you stared into them against your better judgement, your death grip on your arm loosening just at the sight of them. “Are you getting lost in them right now?” He smirked, and you felt like someone had just thrown an ice cold water right in your face. You blinked and averted your eyes, your grip on your arm tightening once more.

“No.” You muttered, shifting your weight to your other foot.

“Come on Y/N, it was a joke.” Draco explained, grabbing your chin softly, turning your head so you could look at him. “I wanted to apologise for what Parkison di-” He started and you scoffed already having had enough. You didn’t let him finish, and you smacked his hand off of your chin.

“I don’t need your pity Malfoy.” You seethed, your eyes narrowing. “Just because Parkinson did what she did. You shouldn’t apologize for her. That’s not your job and it doesn’t change anything, and I don’t appreciate you leading me on to get your kicks.” You pulled away, walking in the direction back to your room.

This continued for the whole week. Draco would find you and corner you when you were least expecting it, trying to catch you off guard. Lucky for you, you had some sense to start carrying your wand around with you even in the common room. You weren’t ashamed to say you used a few spells to knock Draco on his ass to give you time to escape into the comforts of your room. He would and could have gone in after you if he really wanted to, but you both knew he wasn’t going to deny you the comfort of your room. He’d finally had enough when you sat at the opposite end of the great hall, and when you got up he followed.

“Y/N wait!” Draco called after you but you only walked faster, hoping you got to your room before he could get to you. “Y/N please!” He tried again but you still ignored him. “Petrificus Totalus!” Draco called out and you cursed to yourself when you couldn’t take another step.

He was in for it once he let you go. You wanted to shake your head, but you could, only being able to roll your eyes. You heard his footsteps coming up behind you, and when he finally came into view, you tried your best to glare at him even though you could only move your eyes. 

“I know you’re mad, but you wouldn’t let me talk to you any other way.” He explained, and all you did was blink in response. “I’m sorry Y/N, really. Parkinson shouldn’t have read your letter to me, and she shouldn’t have spoken to you that way.” He continued, making you roll your eyes. You wanted to say so many things, itching to grab your wand and send him flying to the other side of the hall. “I really liked your letter.” He continued making your eyes go wide. “Don’t look so surprised.” He laughed shaking his head.

You wanted to ask so many things now that you knew he liked it. Did he like you back? Was he just saying he liked it but didn’t feel the same? What were you going to say later if he says he likes you back? What would you do if he said he didn’t?

“Y/N calm down. Your eyes are going to pop out of your head.” Draco explained making your eyes focus back on him. “I just wanted to say that I like you too, you know. I have for a while. All the things Parkinson said wasn’t true. I even asked your father for permission to date you two years ago.” Draco rambled, and your jaw would have hit the floor if it hadn’t been for the fact that you were stuck in place. “Okay...” He whispered, patting your hand before walking away leaving you stuck for a minute before you finally were able to move your legs.

The first thing you did was try and find him, but no matter where you went he seemed to be nowhere in sight. You even tried going to the common room but there was no sign that he had been there since that morning. With a frustrated groan you sat on the steps of the common room after a few rounds around what felt like the whole school. You dragged yourself to the couch, letting yourself rest your head on the armrest. You were going to wait until he got back even if you had to stay all night.

“Y/N wake up.” You heard while you were being shaken slightly. It hadn’t felt slightly, you almost jumped out of your skin when you felt hands on you. “Hey, it’s okay. It’s just me.” Draco’s voice filled your ears when you felt his hands cup your face. You blinked a few times before he came into focus, and you finally pushed him away from you.

“You scared me!” You exclaimed, your hand still over your chest.

“I’m sorry.” He laughed, while he watched you sit up. “I know the couch isn’t that comfortable. I just wanted to make sure you went to your room.” He explained before his eyebrows knitted together. “Why are you sleeping here anyway?” He asked, making you sigh and stretch.

“Well I was waiting for you.” You mumbled, rubbing your neck. “Thank you.” You smiled softly when his fingers took over and he rubbed your neck for you. “You like me?” You asked softly, looking over to him.

“Yes I do.” He nodded and turned you to face him. “We can get back at Parkinson when she comes back if you want.” Draco explained and you blushed.

“I took care of it.” You admitted sheepishly, and Draco gave you a questioning look. “I may have left a few things in her dorm for her to come back to…” You smirked, biting your lip to hold yourself from laughing. “All I’ll say is she’ll be very itchy and walk into a horrible smell.” You smiled, patting his chest with your hand before kissing his cheek softly.

“Alright smile for the picture everyone,” ordered Mr. Aizawa. You were all gathered together as a class, talking pictures outside the dorms.

“Wait, take another I think I blinked,” said Kaminari.

“No.” Mr. Aizawa handed back the phone he was holding and went back inside.

“Girls picture, Y/N come here.” Mina waved you over.

“Say cheese!” smiled Deku as he snapped the picture.

“Aw, it's so cute!” gushed Mina, looking at the candid.

“Mind if we take that picture now Y/N?” asked Deku. In the corner of your eye, you saw Bakugou and Kirishima. This time it was Kirishima dragging Bakugou away from starting a scene.

“Sure thing. Uh Shoto, do you mind?” You handed Todoroki your phone. You placed your hand on your hip as Deku rested his in the middle of your back.

“Smile.”

“Thanks Todoroki. Uh, I’ll text you the picture later.” Deku nodded.

“Alright guys I’m starving. Can we please go eat?” groaned Sero. You laughed.

“Lead the way tape boy.”

To ensure safety, students wouldn’t be allowed to venture off to different restaurants before Prom. Instead, a buffet style dinner was offered in the dining hall. Any and all food imaginable was there, which honestly seemed better than some over-priced restaurant.

“Gosh everything looks so good!” drooled Deku as he stared at the array of food before him.

“I think I’ll end up getting one of everything,” you joked.

“It will make good fuel for dancing!” said Iida. You laughed.

“Iida I can’t wait to see what kind of moves you bust out.”

You sat down and began to enjoy your meal with the rest of your classmates. The worries that consumed you earlier seemed to be gone. Your focus was on your friends. The laughs you all were sharing, the silly memories you were making, and the night was still so young.

“I’m stuffed,” Deku said, pushing his plate of food.

“Same here. I’m gonna head over to the theatre really quick just to double check everything before you all start flooding in.” You got up from your seat and cleaned up your spot.

“We’ll meet you there in a bit,” smiled Iida. You nodded and began to make your way to the theatre.

You grabbed the keys to the entrance and let yourself inside. Everything looked just as good as you left it. You really had transformed the theatre into something magical. The decorations, the lights, the vibrant colors, it really was a beautiful explosion of emotions. You walked over to the punch station and started to set up cups. You soon heard slow footsteps enter the theatre.

“Hey uh, the dance hasn’t started yet so I’m gonna need you to wait outside…” You looked up to see who was in front of you. Your face turned hot.

“Mind giving me a hand?” Bakugou handed you his black and white rose boutonniere. You sighed and went around the table to stand in front of him. You took the boutonniere with your shaky hands and began to pin it onto his suit. He looked devilishly handsome, wearing the classic suit and tie you had suggested to him weeks ago.

“You look beautiful,” he whispered. You didn’t look up at him, keeping your eyes on the flowers.

“Thank you,” you said plainly. Bakugou sighed.

“Can we talk?” he asked. You finished pinning the flowers to his suit and looked up at him, crossing your arms.

“What’s there to talk about?”

“Y/N please I just need to explain-”

“Explain what? A-are you embarrassed of me? Is that it?” Bakugou attempted to take your hand but you didn’t let him.

“No that’s not it at all. Please-”

“Listen Katsuki. You know how I feel. That hasn’t changed. But if you are gonna act one way around me and then turn around and tell everyone else that I’m meaningless to you, that just isn’t gonna work. Your actions are telling me one thing but the shit that comes out of your mouth says another. You should know that I am not one to be pushed around and I’ll be damned if I’m gonna waste my time on someone who couldn’t give less of a fuck about me. So please Katsuki...”

You had to take a deep breath to keep yourself from just bawling your eyes out in front of him. Bakugou’s eyes began to water a little as well.

“God damnit Katsuki fucking say something!” You cried. You turned around, your back facing him. No way you were going to cry in front of him. You fanned your eyes with your hands.

“The dance starts in 5 minutes. Make yourself useful and stand by the door, collecting tickets. I’m gonna finish setting up here,” you mumbled.

“Y/N-”

“Go!” You pointed to the door. Bakugou sniffled, but went over by the entrance. You sighed and continued to set up the punch station.

“WELCOME TO UA’S THIRD YEAR PROM! ARE YOU READY TO PARTYYY?!” Present Mic seemed to be enjoying the dance more than anyone. People began to flood inside the theatre, rushing straight onto the dance floor. Music blaring, people dancing, your friends smiling. All those agonizing months of planning seemed to be more than worth it. You stood by the punch station, pouring drinks for your fellow classmates.

“I’ve got this,” said a voice behind you. You turned around to see Mr. Aizawa.

“Oh, thank you sir.”

“I knew you’d be able to pull this off,” he said. You smiled.

“Does that mean I’m not getting expelled?” you laughed.

“Don’t push it. You’ve still got a few months before graduation.” You sighed.

“Noted.”

“But You and Bakugou certainly make a good team. That’s a bond you better cherish when you become a Pro-Hero,” explained AIzawa. You looked down.

“I guess so…”

“I think you two just needed a push in the right direction.”

“What do you mean?” Mr. Aizawa took a deep breath.

“Bakugou was never your greatest enemy, but since you fought with him all the time, that’s all you could see him as. Now, he can be your greatest ally.”

“I wouldn’t go that far…”

“I’m not the only one who noticed it but you and Bakugou do work well together. Both of you have grown a lot these past months. You have each other to thank for that.”

“Maybe…”

“Now go enjoy the dance. That’s part of your punishment as well.”

“You’re forcing me to have fun?”

“Yes. Now go.” Aizawa shooed you away. You chuckled to yourself.

“Y/N everything looks amazing!” shouted Mina over the music. You smiled.

“I’m glad you like it.”

“Come dance, you deserve it!”

Mina grabbed your hand and led you to the dance floor. You bounced around carelessly with your friends. You laughed as you watch Deku and Iida attempt to stay on the beat. Denki spun Jirou around and Todoroki swayed a little to the music.

Maybe dances aren’t so bad after all.

“ALRIGHT UA, THE TIME IN THE NIGHT HAS COME TO CROWN OUR KING AND QUEEN! MAY OUR NOMINEES JOIN ME ON STAGE?” announced Present Mic.

The nominees for Prom Queen included Hatsume, Kendou, Momo, Mina, and Uraraka. Nominees for King included Sero, Aoyama, Monoma, Tetustetsu, and Todoroki (he lost a bet with Deku). Everyone lined up on stage and the crowd gathered on the floor.

“Oh my gosh Todoroki looks like he’s gonna off himself,” you laughed.

“He shouldn’t have lost to me in trivia,” said Deku.

“The tie breaker question was about All Might, obviously he was gonna lose,” huffed Iida.

“Whatever he lost fair and square. I hope he wins King though, I voted for him like a hundred times.”

“You are cruel Deku.”

“ALRIGHT LET'S GET TO THE RESULTS!” shouted Present Mic. He reached for the first envelope.

“WAIT-”

You clapped your hand over your mouth in awe. Running onto the stage was none other than Katsuki Bakugou, snatching a microphone off of the DJ booth. He stood in the middle of the stage. Whispers and murmurs filled the room.

“QUIET EXTRAS!” he shouted, “I, uh, I’ve got something to say...”

You began to get really nervous, looking up at Bakugou.

You say you don’t like to kink shame and then immediately after saying that kink shame domkat shippers. I really don’t see the harm in it. Just because it’s not something you’re into doesn’t mean it’s gross. Hell I don’t like gp shit I think it’s weird but I don’t tell you not to read it..

This is going to be very long, so bare with me!

Have you ever had a friend that you had a really special connection with? Maybe even a best friend. You don’t have romantic feelings for each other and maybe even see each other as something like siblings, but your relationship is incredibly special. But your friends and family constantly say things like “Oh are you two going to get together?” Or, “You would make a great couple!” Or maybe even, “It’s obvious that you two like each other. Just get together already!” Maybe you’ve come out as a lesbian and your best friend is a guy and people are constantly making these remarks to you, which invalidates your sexuality. Or you and your best friend are both queer and everyone is trying to get you two together, even though you’re like sisters. Suddenly you find yourself feeling self-conscious whenever you hug your friend because you don’t want people to take it the wrong way, so you pull back. Your friend asks you if you want to go see a movie together but — even though you really want to — you decline because people might see that as a date and get even more persistent with their adamant persuasion. You slowly stop commenting on each other’s social media posts with things such as “I love you!” or “You look gorgeous!” Because you know that it’ll only fuel the fire, and instead decide to keep it professional. And then one day, one of you gets into a relationship, but the comments don’t stop. Instead they’re even more heated with things like “You don’t really love this person you’re with, we all know you really want (best friend).” And your actual relationship is constantly being insulted because people don’t want you with that person, they want you with your best friend whom you don’t have any romantic feelings for. Over time each passing comment chisels away at your friendship with your best friend because of the distance you’ve been forced to give in order to show people that you don’t like each other in that way, until one day there’s just nothing left. You’ve completely drifted because the wedge that all of these people created by shipping you two together has completely destroyed the friendship.

This is what DomKat shippers are doing, but on a much greater scale. It’s not only comments being made, but also writing fanfiction where they have sex with each other. Can you imagine people writing stories about you and your friend (one that you see like family) having sex with each other? Or editing photos of you kissing? Can you imagine how uncomfortable that would make both of you feel to the point where any sort of physical contact with each other now feels too awkward? I mean, Kat is married. Can you even imagine how that makes her feel when these “fans” make stuff like that and TAG her in it so that when she unsuspectingly clicks on the post she sees it? Kat and Dom have asked the fans to stop creating these works, and especially to stop tagging them in it. And to continue to do so is making a statement that says “I don’t care what you want or that it makes you uncomfortable because I enjoy it and therefore will continue to do it.” It also tells Kat that these “fans” dont see her marriage as valid. And it tells Dom that the same thing will happen if she gets into a relationship so she should try to hide it as much as possible.

It’s already affecting their friendship. Have you noticed that in the beginning of the show they were more comfortable being close to each other during panels and interviews? Holding hands for support, giving hugs, giving compliments — things you do with your close platonic friends — and now they don’t do it nearly as much? It’s because of DomKat shippers making them feel uncomfortable doing those things because it gives them fuel to continue shipping them. The level of blatant disrespect for these two people who have poured their heart and soul into giving us the queer female representation we’ve been asking for is just appalling. These aren’t fans. And I can guarantee you that Kat and Dom don’t see these shippers as fans, but rather selfish people who are slowly destroying the fandom.

Shipping these two actresses together isn’t a “kink”, it’s an invasion of privacy, and you better believe that I’m going to call those people out on it. Just like I would call out anyone else who ignores someone’s plea to not be involved in something and continues to do it anyways. And if that’s kink shaming, then quite frankly some kinks should be shamed when they are harmful to another person. If shipping two people together who have asked you not to and have told you that it’s negatively affecting their lives is your “kink”, then I strongly urge you to check your morals, and to also do some internal reflection to figure out why the fictional world where Nicole and Waverly exist isn’t enough for you and you feel the need to bring it into the real world, ultimately crossing the boundaries that have been set by the actresses.

I know it’s just a small portion of the fandom (thank god) but even one DomKat shipper is too many. And you may be thinking, “Well I’m just reading and looking at the stuff I don’t create it, so that’s okay because how will they know I’m even looking at it?” It’s not okay. You are helping fuel the fire by giving these works attention, which encourages the author to create more and makes them feel like what they’re doing is okay, when it’s not. Again, it’s disrespecting their wishes and consent, and you’re doing something they’ve made very clear that they didn’t want — whether you’re creating it or just enjoying the creations. YOU are a part of that.

If after all of this you still don’t think there’s anything wrong with creating/enjoying DomKat content and will continue to do it, then please take some more time to reflect on why you believe crossing the boundaries Dom and Kat have asked fans not to cross isn’t wrong.

Out of curiosity, I’ve noticed you don’t touch on tri, any particular reason? I know a lot of fans myself included don’t care for it but I don’t wanna assume that’s the case

I had a feeling I was going to get this question eventually, and I tussled with myself for quite a while on whether I should answer it publicly or privately, since this is a blog I’d like to mostly dedicate to appreciating the nuances and themes within Adventure and 02 and how carefully they handled all of the topics within, and I’d like to hold back on negativity for the most part (just because I talk about there being a meaningful reason behind most creative decisions in Adventure and 02 doesn’t mean I necessarily like all of them, I just don’t feel like this is the place to be adding those kinds of personal sentiments, because this is meant to be an analysis blog, not a review blog). That said, my meta has been getting a lot of traction lately (thank you so much! I really appreciate it!) and I do feel like this question must have crossed people’s minds at some point since it is a bit of an elephant in the room, so I think people have the right to know the answer.

To those of you reading this who are fans of tri., I sincerely apologize, since some less than kind things are going to be in this answer (although I do hope that maybe the tag would have successfully caught in some blacklists for those trying to avoid this kind of negativity).

The short version of the answer is that “I couldn’t get it to work, and I don’t have the energy to do it.” The long version of the answer is that I did actually try to analyze and pick apart tri. in detail a year ago, but unlike with Adventure and 02, where looking at it deeply and trying to extract details out of it revealed that a lot of it did make sense or at least have a reason behind it, looking at tri. with this level of depth made it fall apart even more. The contradictions and things that don’t make sense aren’t just one or two things you could safely ignore like with, say, Armor Evolution to the Unknown or Tag Tamers or Hurricane Touchdown, but practically permeate the entire text of it (and this is especially the case when you bring 02 into play, but even if you were to isolate Adventure into a vacuum, there are too many things that still don’t make sense), and it’s on every level as well; not just plot and worldbuilding, but also meaningful theme.

In the end, I don’t think this is just something that can be chalked up to mere happenstance, and I think the core of the problem is something that can be accurately summarized in the story of the two tri. scriptwriters who were fans of the original series, but kept getting their scripts rejected because it wasn’t “mature” enough. It’s not limited to just this incident, and it permeates a lot of the sentiments behind what you hear in tri. staff testimony -- a constant sentiment that the original series was a “kids’ show” that didn’t go into any kind of meaningful depth, and that the new series was meant to be “mature” in comparison. This is very, very painful for me to read, as someone who adores the original series because it had a significant level of depth and nuance that so many kids’ shows at the time wouldn’t even dare (and sometimes even to its detriment, since I’ve often complained how the series was too subtle for its own good, or kept going into things that would go over its target audience’s heads) -- contrast the statement about 02 that they wanted it to be a lighter series at first, but felt that it would be wrong to shy away from important things they wanted to say.

The entire premise of the series doesn’t work if you take even a single Adventure episode into account (45, which singlehandedly dismantles most of how tri. is even supposed to work), and there’s this thread of acting like the morality of killing/the morality of friendly fire was somehow new to this series when it comprised a whole quarter of Adventure and nearly the entirety of 02, and with so many other sentiments like this, the only conclusion I can reach is that they cared so much about that “maturity” that actually paying any mind to the series it was meant to be a sequel to was that low on the priority list. For me, who's mainly here to pay respect to the level of detail and thought and depth that the original Adventure and 02 staff put into their series, it just feels unfair to expect me to bend over backwards and compromise the integrity of the analysis just to make it “comply” with a series that never intended to be consistent or make sense in the first place.

Even if you do selectively include tri. elements, the more you try to involve, the more all of the contradictory facts and themes between Adventure/02 and tri. come into conflict like two magnets with the wrong sides facing each other, and you are repeatedly going to come into crossroads where you will have to commit to one over the other. At that point, the sheer level of speculation and workarounds to make it happen, and the things you'd have to toss out or modify from what was originally meant to be a comprehensive analysis, make it into less of an analysis and more headcanon and fanfiction. Which is perfectly fine if you want to go that route, I mean -- it's just that this isn't what this blog is for, because I'm trying to analyze and inspect what (the very uniformly consistent) Adventure and 02 were trying to say before another series (one that clearly had zero fundamental interest in maintaining any of that) came around fifteen years later. I include Kizuna mainly because it is incredibly easy to fit in comparison, given that it not only had original staff, but also is clearly made with just as much attention to detail and focus on meaningful theme as the original series was, and so it’s fairly easy to integrate it into an Adventure/02 analysis without much trouble -- in fact, Kizuna additions conversely often enhance and further elaborate on things that were already in the original series, so the helpful additions it adds far outweigh the work it takes to include it -- but that’s not the case for tri. at all.

Nevertheless, as I said, this is not a blog meant to focus on negativity. There are people who found something in tri. that spoke to them, or don’t really put so much weight into what the staff said or thought, and would like to see it in a way that works for them. I personally encourage this sentiment; just because I happen to be someone who treasures Adventure and 02′s integrity so much that I refuse to compromise does not mean I should inflict these feelings on others who don’t see it the same way. Because of that, I personally felt it was better to simply not cover it, rather than derailing every single analysis to make an aside about everything about tri. that doesn’t make sense, because that’s also going to be hurtful to anyone who does like one or more of the series and wants to make it work. But, after all, this blog is my personal analysis and way of seeing the series, and I cannot see it in a way that makes it work (and especially don’t have the energy to make an attempt for something I do in my free time), and so I would rather just pass the baton to those who feel more up to it instead; in other words, I’m not trying to invalidate tri.’s existence for those who want to make it work, and rather my stance is “I can’t figure out a way to make it work myself, so I will leave the reasoning to you.” Moreover, I’ve implied this a few times, but a lot of the ideas on this blog or in any of my analyses are not things I came up with on my own, but from sharing ideas and having discussions with friends in my private time, and I feel like I would be doing them a disservice by weaponizing all of the insightful things they’ve given me to dunk on something else. I love 02 a lot, and one of its major themes was trying to make the most positively productive thing you can out of what you have, and advocating for people to maybe appreciate something they may not have thought about before feels like a better use of my time.

If you are interested in my analysis of tri. from last year, I still keep it on hand mainly because -- well, to be frank about it, nearly every tri. diehard fan I’ve had a personal encounter with has said some very nasty things to me about how I’m not “smart” enough to appreciate the series, or how I’m being “unfair” about it, or how I’m not a “real fan” for not singing its praises, and so I mainly put this together as a collected document and proof of how I (and the few others who helped me put it together) did actually make due diligence and put proper scrutiny into trying to make it work (and couldn’t). (If you happen to identify as a tri. diehard fan and have not said this kind of thing to people, I sincerely apologize and want to make clear that I don’t want to pin the entire tri. fanbase as this kind of person; this was just my personal experience.) I wrote it mainly as catharsis and for the sake of other people who were interested in a detailed analysis, and also for the sake of other people who might have gotten these kinds of dismissive insults and wanted confirmation that their feelings weren’t baseless, or for bridging the gap between people who did like the series but want to understand why there are people who don’t (this apparently was a testimony from a few people who read it). That’s also why I’m linking it right now, since I imagine that there might be people curious about said aforementioned analysis after I’d just brought it up. However, I do warn that there is a lot of frustrated negativity, and that there is a sense of bias in that I wrote this “going in with doubt” instead of the more positive attitude I have with Adventure or 02 in that I assume there was a good reason for everything, and, frankly, if you like tri., I don’t actually suggest reading it or bringing that kind of negativity about something you like into your view. I also ask that people understand that the linked document is where I dumped all of my feelings cathartically and I do not enjoy dwelling on it further, nor bringing up this document when it doesn’t feel necessary, so I apologize, and I hope the stance I just expressed won’t taint anyone’s opinion of me too much...^^

Chapter Fourteen: Friends

Summary: A talented young witch is employed as an apprentice professor at Hogwarts, but who will she be working under? To the other professors, breakfast came and went just as it did every other day. But Aria could sense the difference in tone from the students. To the other professors the students chatter was just as excitable as it always was. But Aria could tell it was more hushed and secretive. To the other professors, today was just a normal day, they would have gone about their day blissfully unaware of the situation that had occurred at the Three Broomsticks. Had it not been for the huge elephant in the room.

As he entered the hall that morning for breakfast not a soul in the room missed the swollen black and blue lump in place of where Snape's eye should be. Not a soul in the room missed the way he stormed in, in a fit of rage, knowing that the whole school would be talking about him. And not a soul missed the glares he sent their way daring them to confront him on the matter. But only Aria Dumbledore could see the hurt in his eyes, the embarrassment he was feeling and the pain he buried deep down for the way he had treated his friend last night.

Of course, she was angry at him. All of this was his fault. But the sadness she felt for him overcame her own dignity and she wanted to find out what it was all for. What hurt him so badly, that he felt the need to make her feel as low as he did. Aria knew this was yet another mystery of the great Severus Snape which would remain unanswered. The man was an enigma.

As expected, the potions master and his apprentice were curtly invited to Headmaster Dumbledore's office after breakfast to explain themselves. It had not taken long for the rumours to spread from the students all the way to the top, and it was clear Aria's grandfather was less than pleased to hear them.

"You will both be well aware of why I called you here this morning, I am sure." Dumbledore begun when the pair entered the Headmasters office. The two merely nodded, letting the old wizard speak.

"Firstly, I must begin by saying how utterly disappointed I am in the two of you. Not only in the events that transpired last night, but moreover the fact that neither of you were professional enough to come to speak to me about this first, before it got out of hand." The headmaster started, taking a seat behind his large oak desk.

Both Aria Dumbledore and Severus Snape bowed their heads in shame, as they stood side by side awkwardly, neither of them daring to look at the other.

"Grandfather I-"

"Miss Dumbledore, in this current professional capacity, I would appreciate if you addressed me as your rightful superior."

"I'm sorry." She replied sheepishly. "Headmaster Dumbledore, I want to apologise for not informing you of what had happened at the Three Broomsticks but as you can see Sever-, Professor Snape did have some injuries that needing tending to and in the state that he was, I didn't think him fit enough to be left unattended to."

As she spoke Severus let out a grunt of disagreement in an attempt to mask his embarrassment.

"Whether that may be the case, Miss Dumbledore, if you are being harassed by another member of staff, your priority should be to inform me, not assist your harasser." Albus scorned.

Snape remained silent, waiting to be spoken too before opening his mouth. He was mortified by his actions in the Three Broomsticks, but even more so by what happened later that night.

"Now, which one of you would like to explain to me what happened, so I can distinguish the truth from some of the student's wild imaginations."

Aria turned her attention to the Potions master who continued to keep his head down, not willing to recall his cruel words.

"I think Professor Snape is best for that job, headmaster." Aria confessed, unwilling to let the man get off so easily.

"Very well. Aria, you may leave us." Dumbledore announced.

"What? But why?" She objected.

"As you so graciously volunteered Severus for the job, I no longer have a reason to keep you back from your duties as a professor." Dumbledore informed her calmly. "Speaking of which, you will be taking all of the potions classes alone for the time being. Professor Snape will be taking a short sabbatical."

Snape's face turned grey at the thought. Not only did he not want this young witch teaching his students, but the mention of a sabbatical made his stomach drop. He knew how he had acted was wrong, but never had it crossed his mind that he could possibly lose his job for what he had done.

"What!?" Aria gasped. "But you can't do that, he-"

"Relax, Aria dear." Dumbledore interrupted. "It is only until I get this business cleared up. With his eye looking as it does the excitement will never settle, you know how students like to gossip. Besides he can take some time to reflect on his actions while it heals." Dumbledore shot Snape a disapproving look.

Aria made to object once again, but this time Severus took the opportunity to shut her up.

"Go, Miss Dumbledore. Do not keep my students waiting." He commanded sourly.

Finally, Aria obeyed, leaving with an uneasy feeling settling in her stomach as she left the two men to talk.

Dumbledore clasped his hands on the desk in front of him and waited patiently for Severus to confess his wrong doings.

"I will not insult you, headmaster, by downplaying my actions from last night. I stupidly let my emotions get the better of me and I thought I could find a solution at the bottom of a bottle of Fire Whiskey, I was wrong. I said disgusting things to your granddaughter and believe me no one can judge me more than I am judging myself right now." Snape could not bring himself to meet the old wizards disappointed gaze.

"And your eye, how did that situation occur." Albus questioned, feeling slightly sorry for the professor, despite the trouble he has caused.

"It was well deserved." Snape admitted. "A 'friend' of your granddaughter's rightfully put a stop to my embarrassing display. I apologise whole heartedly for every mistake I made last night."

"That is all very good and well, Severus. But have you said this to her?"

Severus hung his head.

"I see. May I suggest that be your first port of call." Albus advised.

"Of course."

The Professors sat in dead silence. It was clear both of them were in their own heads more than the conversation.

"Is there something more I should know, Severus?" Dumbledore eyed the man skeptically.

Severus paused for a moment, debating whether to confide in his friend.

"No, sir." He lied. His voice remained void of all emotion.

"Aria could be a great friend to you, Severus. Do not throw that chance away, again. Learn from your past mistakes." The Headmaster warned.

Albus Dumbledore's words resonated with Severus all day. The old man was right. He had once lost his only friend due to a small moment of emotional vulnerability paired with the harshness of his words, he could not re-live that experience. There was only one way to avoid losing Aria from his life completely, any feelings he may have had for her now had to be buried entirely.

Storming into her first lesson of the day, the room fell silent upon Aria's entry. The students waited a minute or two, expecting the presence of their most feared professor, which never came.

Aria begun the lessons as Severus always did; silently writing out paragraphs of information for the students to copy. It didn't take long for the fifth years to realise Snape would not be joining them this morning and so they set about asking their more relaxed potions professor all of the questions they were just dying to know the answers to, regarding the events of the previous night.

"Professor Dumbledore, where's Professor Snape, isn't he going to teach us?" It began.

"Unfortunately, today I will be solely be teaching Professor Snape's classes." Aria answered, turning her back on the classroom of students and continued to scribble on the chalk board.

"I heard he shouted at you in front of everyone in the Three Broomsticks yesterday Miss, is that true?" One of the Ravenclaw girls dared to ask.

"You should have seen him." Another laughed. "He was absolutely wrecked, knocked back almost a full bottle of Fire Whiskey apparently."

Aria chose not to respond.

"You were there? What did he say?" A curious Gryffindor inquired, wanting to hear the full story for himself. The two started quietly conversing up the back of the class, letting some more students get their accusations in.

"Is it true you are Karkaroff were caught going at it in the potions cupboard, Miss." Another boy bravely chuckled. "Is that where Snape found you?"

"That's can't be true." Someone else defended, shaking their head in disbelief.

"It is so, didn't you see the two of them at dinner yesterday? He could barely keep his hands off of her." Another whispered.

A few gasps and giggles broke out among the students as they continued to speculate.

"I heard she's the one who punched Snape, did you see his eye today?

"To be fair I don't blame her, he is a bit of a wanker, he probably deserved it."

"Don't be so stupid. It wasn't her; it was her boyfriend, I saw it myself."

"Did Snape actually call you a Slut, Miss?"

The room went quiet anticipating their teacher's response.

"Enough!" She yelled, slamming her hand on the desk as she turned to face them. The class stared at her, stunned.

"I don't want to hear any more of this." She started, putting down her chalk. "I am well aware that some of you may have witnessed the incident that occurred in the Three Broomsticks last night and while Professor Snape's little outburst may have happened extremely publicly, this gives none of you the right to make things worse by making up these stupid stories. I am going to settle this once and for all and I want to hear no more of it, do you understand?" The class nodded silently.

"First off; no, Professor Snape has not been fired, nor would I want him to be. He will resume his position as your potion's professor in a few days' time, and I warn all of you that this nonsense better be done with by then. He will not let you off as lightly as I have done." Aria walked around her desk, resting on the edge as she spoke.

"Secondly, any rumours you have heard regarding me and Headmaster Karkaroff are completely false. Professor Snape got the wrong impression and has now been informed of his mistake. In addition to this, anything you may have heard surrounding me and any other member of staff, or indeed students..." She said through gritted teeth. "... is also false. This includes Professor Snape."

A moment of chatter bubbled among the students, before once again falling silent.

"As for the man I was with, he was nothing more than a friend. And after the way he treated Professor Snape, he is no longer even that. Violence in any form will not be tolerated, no matter the circumstances. I will personally deal with any student supporting the actions of this man or the harming of Professor Snape, regardless of anything he may or may not have said." Aria finished.

"Is all of this abundantly clear?" She asked the class, receiving a chorus of agreement in response.

Aria let the students know to spread this information throughout the school to combat the rumours surrounding her and Severus Snape's altercation, and they graciously obliged. She received very little harassment or questions for the rest of the day, although she knew it was almost impossible to put an end to all of the speculations this early on.

Whilst packing up her papers to return to her quarters for an early night, Aria was startled by a sharp knock on the door.

"Come in." She called, not bothering to stop what she was doing. It wasn't until he was standing right in front of her did Aria even recognise who it was. "Severus." The professor said in shock. "Knocking to get into your own class room now?"

"As it were, this appears to be your classroom for the time being, Miss Dumbledore." He droned, watching her intently as she went about her business.

"For a few days at least, it seems." She shrugged. "Is there something I can help you with?"

"I came for an update on my classes' progression. While I might not be teaching them, this does not mean I am willing to relinquish all of my responsibilities quite yet. I don't imagine you have anything prepared." He sneered, continuing to analyse the desk.

"Actually, Professor Snape, I have." She retorted, handing him a small binder. "There you will find every class organised by year and then by level of difficulty; I have written a small summary of what we covered in the classes and how far we hope to progress. All students are listed individually and sorted by house, each detailing how well they coped with the lesson and what they need to work on. I shall give you another update tomorrow, and each day after until you are back. Happy?" She smirked.

"Very impressive." He hummed, unamused, snatching the binder from her and making to leave.

As Snape reached the exit, one hand holding the door ajar, he let his fingers tap on the wood indecisively. Letting out a small huff of breath Severus turned on his heel, re-entering the classroom as he remembered his promise to the headmaster.

"There is one more thing, Miss Dumbledore." The potions master announced, bringing her back to his attention.

"Mmhmm." Aria hummed, continued to flick through her papers, making sure she had what she needed.

"If you could actually pay attention, Miss Dumbledore, I would be able to get out of your hair much faster." Severus hissed through gritted teeth, fighting the urge to roll his eyes.

"What do you want, Severus." His apprentice huffed. "I do have things to be getting on with. Spit it out."

Snape clenched his jaw and pursed his lips, trying his damn best not to insult the girl.

Couldn't she just listen for five seconds when he was actually trying to be nice to her? He thought.

"I... I want you to know." Snape stuttered, coughing to clear his throat. "I need you to know. Everything I said last night, I didn't mean any of it. I was drunk, and sometimes emotions that we would all like to keep hidden show themselves, do you understand?"

"I get it, Severus. I know you wouldn't have said those things under normal circumstances. You were stressed." Aria accepted, immediately going back to her piles of parchment.

"Look at me." Snape snapped. "You do not understand. I am apologising for my actions in the Three Broomsticks, of course I am. But the point I would most like to stress is... Can we just forget yesterday never happened? All of it."

Aria stared deep into the Professor's eyes knowing he was desperate for her attention. Ignoring the fact he was battered and bruised, she could see the pain in his eyes. The desperateness for her to agree with him, to forget that anything ever happened between them, or rather could have happened.

"Don't worry about it, Severus. Nothing happened as far as I am concerned." She reached out to him, resting a hand on his bicep and flashing a comforting smile.

A hint of a smile threatened on Severus' lips. But as soon as it came it was gone once again. Snape stepped away from the woman, letting her get on with her work.

"Can we agree on one thing, Severus?" Aria asked, keeping her attention on him finally. Snape nodded, allowing her to continue. "The students are having a field day with all of this. I think it would be in everyone's interest for us to try and get along. Hopefully it will dull down a lot of the rumours if they see us acting civil. What do you think? Friends?" She proposed.

Snape let out a small huff of amusement, letting the sides of his lips curl up, contently.

"Friends." He agreed, stepping out of the room quietly.

One thing that really grinds my gears about (ginger boy who I will not name so as to not summon antis) stans is their constant refusal to admit when he messes up or is acting flawed. They love to rave about how “he’s so flawed and human and relatable”, but then ANYTIME another fan pops on and gives an example of a when (ginger) wasn’t acting his best and that bothered them, antis will attack that person and blame them for “bashing” and “misunderstanding the scenario.”

They always have some kind of excuse or they point fingers at the people around him to make him look blameless and to make it seem like anyone who is criticizing his behavior are just “looking for an excuse to bash him.” They say he’s a flawed and relatable character but never give him the CHANCE to be flawed and relatable. They let Hermione, Harry, Ginny, etc. take the fall and be wrong, but can they ever do that for (ginger)? Nope.

Here’s the thing...I LIKE him. I WANT to like him and support him and root for him! But I can’t do that if his stans insist on portraying him as this untouchable god who graces everyone with his presence everytime he’s around. The same goes for (ginger x Hermione)! I’ll occasionally find myself in their tag and see fanart for it or edits or text from the books and I’m like...oh I kinda like this? It’s not bad. Not my cup of tea, but not bad! I may even save some of it! But then I see stans opening their mouths and degrading every freaking character to make (ginger) look better and basically give him the same treatment that the early fandom gave Hermione.

Personally, I think character worship is just as bad as bashing. You pretty much erase everything about the character and turn them into this caricature of their former selves. Bashers (genuine bashers, not just people who criticize behavior) take flaws of the character and inflate them to turn the character into a much much worse version of themselves. Worshippers take flaws and suppress them until the character is basically a Mary Sue. BOTH of these things destroy a character and ruin their potential. Do I think the fandom tends to lean a bit more toward bashing for (ginger) and worshipping for Hermione? Early on, yes. But we’ve grown and learned that that isn’t always the right mindset to have. Things are starting to level out! Which is why I can’t stand seeing the scales beginning to tip again!

I went back-and-forth about posting this, tbh. I want to remind our followers that we’re not necessarily here to “vent” because there’s a fine line between venting and hating on characters/people/authors ourselves--and mostly a fine line between letting one person vent and that snowballing into people responding with their own venting which snowballs into mean things said. What this blog is supposed to be is an opportunity to discuss maybe a fanfiction you didn’t quite get, or to fancast, or to talk about why you think a main ship character should be portrayed a certain way. I don’t want to put a fine point on it because this is Dramione Discussion and so that implies an openness of subject, but I just want to make sure that we collectively understand what’s happening here.

Why I’m choosing to post it is because I think you present an interesting argument about character bashing/worship in general, so I want to reorient this discussion to point out some general things we’re seeing in the fandom (and which have been discussed on this blog lately).

I agree with you that extreme reaction to a character--whether bashing or worshipping--is going to limit the character. Additionally, part of what I like about fanfiction is that you can do that. I don’t like a Mary Sue Hermione, but some people do, I’m sure, or else she would never get written that way. What I’ve enjoyed about watching the fandom over the 18/19 years I’ve been reading fanfiction is watching us all grow. You can kind of tell when it’s a 15-yo that wrote the story--there are limits to how successful the author can be in portraying multi-dimensional characters in complex situations, because they just don’t have the experience to portray it accurately. But as we have aged and learned more about life, we’ve built a large, complex fandom with a variety of interesting stories about all kinds of things. In my youth, I could never imagine a story about Hermione and Draco being parents because that was just too far out of my understanding to relate. Nowadays, a story like The Request is right up my alley, not because I have children, but because I have friends who are widowed and have kids and are getting remarried, and that story has become more relatable. Alternatively, when I went through my last breakup, a story like The Request was too realistic for me to handle and I turned to cleotheo for something to just get me feeling normal again in much the same way others turn towards Hallmark movies. Each story/author has its own purpose for me as an individual, and I think a purpose for the fandom as a whole.

I feel that way about characters, too. As someone who studied literature in college, I’ll tell you that a story needs a villain and a tragedy needs comedic relief. Neither of those characters are likely to get much development. A good way to juxtapose this is to talk about Dumbledore and how he went from being this paternal, all-knowing, good guy, to being a very complex, and sometimes hated character by many in the HP fandom. My 13 yo self reading OotP would never have imagined that Dumbledore might be a bad guy--but we’ve created such a complex story around him as a fandom over the years that now I prefer not to read about him at all in my stories. The same can be said for Voldemort--there’s a not insignificant part of the fandom out there that finds ways to redeem him regularly in their fanfiction. That’s what’s so great about fanfiction.

I say all this to say that there’s a place for the bashers, and there’s a place for the worshippers, and if you (not you, Anon, but the public) don’t like to read it, don’t read it. I appreciate that you mentioned that there’s been some Ronmione out there you might have liked, because I think a lot of people in our ship might not branch out enough. If you love to read fanfiction bashing Ron, then fine, you probably won’t love Ronmione, but there’s no reason to seek out a Ronmione lover and tell them that. Let them read in peace. Additionally, they (Ronmione authors) are going to write stories where Draco is weasel ferret, and we know there’s some canon in the book to back that up, and if they want to read Draco-bashing fanfiction, let them.

Writing about these not-real characters is a great way to reflect on our society. I’ve mentioned before that I’m, personally, not a fan of POC Hermione because I think the muggleborn aspect serves the purpose of reflecting racial bigotry we see in modern society without being on-the-nose. Additionally, hero-worship and character-bashing in fanfiction can reflect ideals or wrongs, respectively, that we see in the world onto certain characters. I think that allowing someone to read/write in peace is a great way to start extending compassion and individuality past your personal life into your social one.

Hmm, maybe Body Politics? Generally speaking I think RPF AUs attract more readers than non-AU, and since everyone adores Political Daddy Chris, I figured this one could’ve done a little but better? Especially since I really like it myself (but then of course, that’s often how it goes isn’t it 😅)

* Got a better reaction than you expected:

Basically all of them! I never in a million years imagined that people would actually enjoy my writing, so every time I get a kudo on a fic I’m like “what, for real??” 🥰 But if I have to pic one, I guess From Brooklyn, With Love, since I wrote that one in one morning while at work and it did pretty well lol. Oh, and also my CAPBB fic from last year, Rare Is This Love (Keep It Covered), because I still can’t believe it did so well alongside the amazing fics from all the amazing authors who also participated in that bang.

* Is your funniest:

You Make My Heart Skip A Beet, I think. I’ve definitely gotten the most comments of people saying it cracked them up on that one! Or alternatively You lift my fucking spirits, bro, although that one is just a drabble. Still thinking of turning it into a proper fic at some point...

* Is your darkest/angstiest:

LOL none of them are particularly angsty. I’m not great with writing angst 😅 But for Stucky, it would probably be Rare Is This Love again, and for Evanstan maybe Closer? Yeah, I think so.

* Is your absolute favourite:

Ugh okay, if I *have* to answer this one, I’ll say it’s There is a Tavern in the Town, because that one allowed me to combine my love for Evanstan and Stucky and it’s not perfect, but it’s very close to my heart. Oh, and also I Really Can't Stay (Baby, It's Cold Outside) because I LOVE co-authoring with my gorgeous wife @paper-storm and I still feel all warm and fuzzy inside whenever I think about this fic 🥰

Honourable mention for Reckless Serenade, since it’s the filthiest thing I’ve ever written and I love it. 

* Is your least favourite:

That’s hard, too lol. I guess maybe Café Rouge, not because I dislike the fic but because it’s Peggy/Angie and I wrote it for a femslash challenge, but I don’t really ship it? Or, I mean, I ship it, but not in the same way I ship Stucky and Evanstan, you know?

* Was the easiest to write:

I guess maybe Strawberries & Cream or Diving In The Deep End, both of which I wrote really quickly because I just had to get those little scenes I had stuck in my head down onto paper!

* Was the hardest to write:

Probably also Café Rouge, because I wasn’t as driven by my passion for the ship as I normally am! That, or Rare Is This Love (again) because I really struggled to make the deadline on that one and that was not fun 😂 

* Have you re-read the most:

That would be my fist ever fic, I've done some things that I shouldn't have done (but I haven't stopped loving you once), because I was terrified it was rubbish and I kept re-reading it to see if I could improve it hahaha. Also (If Paradise Is) Half as Nice, because I think it’s hawt.

* Would you recommend to someone reading your work for the first time:

I did actually recommend There is a Tavern in the Town to one of my uni friends when she found out I wrote fanfiction and wanted to read some of it. In hindsight, maybe I’d recommend Maybe Baby (I'll Have You) now, because that one is non-RPF, more or less PG and kind of cute haha.

* Are you most proud of:

I think I Spy With My Little Eye, just because SO many people have told me how much they love it, and that’s kind of what you write for, isn’t it? And I don’t mean validation necessarily (although that is GREAT lol), but to give other people something they enjoy! 💗

* Has your favourite line/exchange/paragraph (share it):

Finding a favourite bit was literally impossible because all it did was remind me that I’m not all that good at writing 😂 However, I really like this scene from Closer, because I love how happy Sebastian is, and how fond Chris is, and how effortlessly these boys can laugh together, even during the most serious, heartfelt of moments. Since it’s a bit long-ish, I’ll put it under the cut!

Sebastian blinks at Chris a few times, then suddenly sits up straight, grabbing Chris’s hand and prying open his fingers.

There they are. Two rings. That really happened.

His eyes snap back up to Chris’s face, wide and stunned. “You- had these made?”

Chris smiles at him indulgently. “Yes.”

“For us?”

“Yes.”

When the meaning of the gesture finally sinks in, a wave of pure, unadulterated happiness rises up in Sebastian’s chest so fast and fierce and unstoppable that it makes him feel lightheaded again – thought this time for an entirely different reason. He claps a hand over his mouth in a failed attempt to stifle the burst of laughter that escapes past his lips.

“Are you… laughing at me?” Chris asks, narrowing his eyes in suspicion, but he mostly seems amused.

Sebastian’s eyes grow even wider. “No,” he says firmly. “Fuck, Chris, I’m sorry.” He barks out another joyful laugh, unable to stop now that he’s started. “Sorry, sorry, I’m not laughing at you, I swear,” he hiccups, shaking his head from side to side and smiling like a lunatic. “I’m just so fuckin’ happy.”

“Oh, thank god,” Chris exclaims dramatically, slapping a hand over his heart. “So in that case, d’you think there’s any chance I could maybe get an answer at some point?” He pulls a face. “I mean, it may have escaped your notice, but I actually just made a heartfelt speech, declaring my undying love for you and asking you to be mine forever. But, you know, I can see how you could’ve missed that bit, it’s not like I poured my heart and soul into–”

Sebastian surges forward and cuts off Chris’s rambling by catching his still moving lips in a searing kiss.
