hi hii ik we're alr kinda talking abt this but im curious abt your track-by-track reaction to unsound methods :D

okay so it’s been two weeks since I listened to the whole album and my short term memory is actual garbage, and I don’t remember all of the songs super super clearly so I had to go back and re-listen to a lot of them, which is why it took me so long to respond to this. (sorry about that.) but I have so much analysis about this and i’m about to go way too in depth into this so!! let’s get into this!!!

incubus - every alan song has a rly good buildup and climax type of structure but on this song it’s just SO well done to me. I had absolutely NO idea what I was getting myself into with this album as a whole so this song took me kind of off guard at first bc the climax of it is just SO MUCH but it’s grown on me a lot

drifting - I immediately liked this one which is probably a little bit because I really like siobhan’s vocals. but there isn’t such a buildup on this song. but also the words “I taste the tracks of the waste in my head” are just. OUGH. and also every time she says “I am poison” my head explodes for some unknown reason

luscious apparatus - I literally have to mentally prepare myself if I want to listen to this song because it is SOMETHING ELSE. we kind of went over this but I NEED to analyze this song like it’s a lab specimen so pls strap in bc I still have so much to say about this song. first of all the words “luscious apparatus” are so abstract together and I love the way it sounds for some reason. but also the fact that the whole song is a story and such a weird twisted one at that is so cool to me. and then there’s so many small little details that make it that much more off putting to me, like the line “their mouths get smaller with dreams“ and “graveyard shift at the mayonnaise factory” and “1am lunch break”. the way it starts with such small details that don’t totally make sense just adds so much to the whole creepiness of the song. and then ESPECIALLY “jack was trying to carve poems into himself/ and now he wanted to carve some in her” is just one HELL of a line imo. and then finally how after the whole climax of the story happens and its all suspenseful and they just. PAUSE. and then the only conclusion is just the final line “carla didn’t think of jack as a luscious apparatus after that”. they dropped ALL OF THAT with no explanation for what it means at ALL and then leave you there to linger with it for another minute. everything about this song just accentuates how insanely unsettling it is and I LOVE that

stalker - THIS SONG IS ALSO JUST SO CREEPY. and the detail of 911 call sound added in makes it so much more unsettling. And I like how some of the lines are repeated bc I feel like it adds to that feeling. and also I need to mention the like “her serenity oozed into my ear” because THAT IS JUST. SUCH A COOL ARRANGEMENT OF WORDS. IT IS CREEPY AND UNSETTLING AND I ADORE IT FOR SOME REASON. overall this song makes it feel like you are hearing the inner thoughts of the stalker character which is SO CREEPY

red river cargo - I really like how the vocals kind of fade in slightly at the beginning. there’s not a whole lot to say abt the lyrics but the instrumental break at like 2:50 is. EPIC. SHDJXHSNXG. this song feels like a gospel song but distorted and ghostlike. it’s like if a bunch of old ghosts who were all from the same group of people but in different time periods all came together to sing the song and commiserate over their generations of suffering, but because they’re ghosts it comes out distorted. until the very end when it becomes clear again, which makes me think of a new generation from the same group of people singing the same song. maybe it isn’t that deep but I got a very strong (and very intriguing) mental image from it!

control freak - THE FUCKING VOICE CHANGE AT 1:36 IS. SOMETHING ELSE. I’m not even totally sure what else to say abt this song but I am going to brand it as one of the Intense Outrageous Ones™ bc I feel like it deserves it. also the repeated drum sound in the last like?? minute or so?? of the song I just really like for some reason. ALSO also istg it sounds like they play the “you’re all i need to get high” like backwards at some parts which is so interesting to me

missing piece - THIS. THIS IS THE SONG THAT STARTED IT ALL. fun fact! I heard this song a from an audio file that you actually reblogged a while ago! and I was so enraptured that I decided to go listen to the whole album. this song is incredible I ADORE it so much. the opening line “i wanna write myself on the walls of your heart” is SO GOOD. the climax of the song isn’t really super intense but it’s still just so good and I love how it sounds. I also adore the line “sometimes is a lonely place” for. unknown and inexplicable reasons. this is my favorite song on the album I think it is spectacular

last breath - I love how the sound at the beginning sounds like it’s pulsing and how it keeps pausing. it sounds like the musical version of a wind gust that is struggling to maintain its power. and the wolf howling sound is so well placed as is the entrance of the gospel vocals. and the (for lack of bette phrasing) beat drop thing at 2:27 is SOOO GOOD to me for some reason as well. I also do like the drum beat and rewind sound thing at like 4:04. i’m not totally sure what else I want to say about this one but I like it. and the drum at the very very end is also very good. I can’t articulate it well but. all the songs have very good arrangement of sounds but this one sticks out to me for some reason

shunt - idk if this is audible on all devices but I LOVE that the train chugging?? noise at the beginning sounds like it’s literally going left to right across the inside of my phone. and how the echoey noises (I am. horrible at describing things sorry) seriously sound like they’re fucking MOVING TOWARD ME. like it’s in my phone this should not be possible. I also like the more expansive and lengthy notes/sounds that run in the background of the funkier drum and synth sounds. that makes so little sense but yeah. and how the whispers start off totally indecipherable until it gets to the “there’s blood on the line”. like maybe that’s just me and my brain’s shitty sound processing skills that make it impossible for me to decipher the words other than “there’s blood on the line” but i’m not sure. i’m actually really curious what you think about that part or if you can tell what words are being said bc I Cannot, hsjshdjd. also moving on, I like how it gets faster and faster and faster until the very end of the song when all the music just stops and it’s just the two voices. and also how the very last repetition of “there’s blood on the line” echoes so much I just think that sounds really cool

generally speaking, this entire album was so good. it was something else. it was So Much. I especially love how abstract and incredibly poetic a lot of the lyrics are. I might have to make a post series of my favorite recoil lyrics like the depeche mode ones I did after I listen to the rest of his albums.

1. Which trope you’re writing is the hardest for you?

this took a while to think about. so i’ll say anything dealing with time or ether dimension is the hardest to write about. for me, part of the problem is my mind trying to wrap around physics and making sense of it because i want to be realistic (which broke me a little). 

jokers game (a wip currently on hiatus and should be renamed since it’s cheesy) and wicked seven deals with this kind of dimension travelling trope...i’m starting to get an idea as i’m sketching out the outline and notes. 

2. Who are five of your favorite characters from books/tv shows/etc.?

okay so, im listing out my favorites so they’re re-l and vincent law (ergo proxy), zoya from the grishaverse...she’s everything a girl/boy/person can dream of and i am gay, and i hate to say this but i have to include it bc he’s a persona/brand...richard papen from the secret history. lastly, zhou ying (nothing gold can stay)...i just dig characters that are down to earth but headstrong and resilient af 

3. Who are five of your favorite ocs?

etienne, an oc from @popovs, he’s such a cool, refreshing character and my mind is still in awe from the excerpts shown abt him. a little mysterious bc i want to hear more about this dude. 

i have to mention that isadora or izzy, is one of the few characters i’m really rooting for, hope she could accomplish her goals in finding nadine and more (her relationships with maris and patrick is goals, honestly and also my favorites). bless @wiipciity coming up this amazing character!

4. What literary devices do you enjoy reading most? Are they the same ones you like to write most?

zeugma is one of the literary devices i enjoy the most, there’s something short and melodic about it that makes me excited to read on (funny i found myself using zeugma as if it’s my second nature). oh, i especially love euphemism and personification though i tend to write more of the latter. irony is also something i like to find and read about but not so much writing it...it tends to fall flat imo

5. If you could only have one WIP, which would it be? Why?

i’m keeping these hungry dogs, i rather not lose my other wips tbhh but having thd sticking with me for years made me biased...ope

6. Fantasy or Contemporary?

fantasy, it is my roots 

7. Romance or Bromance?

bromance, i just find them enjoyable to read and write about, also we need more of bromance in literature/media, they deserve the same spotlight 

8. Do you have any pet peeves in writing?

i typically find it’s insulting to have writers ‘spoon-feed’ their readers information, thinking they aren’t smart enough to figure the plot twist or foreshadowing by themselves. it’s very obvious when it does happen and i find it as a turn-off and quit reading. it’s sigh, most of the time it’s the writers not trusting their readers and this has to stop 

9. If you had to choose one album of some musical artist/band to represent your WIP, which would it be?

as a playlist kind of person, Ramsey could be a perfect fit for heir of the alchemist, she is an absolute phenomenon and powerhouse in vocals, the rawness of it, yes 

10. Do you have any pet peeves on writeblr?

hope everyone agrees to this or else i’m going to the corner. so this is for taglists, mainly. whenever i explictly said that ‘ask me to be added/removed to the taglist’, i ACTUALLY meant that, send me an ask. 

it’s been years and it bothers me a lot. instead, i keep having people writing in the tags asking me if they could be added, and chances are, i won’t be able to know or see them. trust me, i don’t have to the time to go through every reblogs/tags to look for them. and i am sure it isn’t just me who had this problem. i think i discussed with @montevena about this a while back and it’s tiring.

HI HOW DO YOU WRITE CHARACTERS

hewwo! i can answer this! im literally gonna do a quick list of both deh and bmc characters for u under this readmore! :D

im gonna start with deh because smaller cast!

evan: 

isn’t so much stuttery as he tends to repeat things and uh stammer a bit here and there. stutters over his words sometimes but it’s more l-like this and uh, like… like this

evan hansen has anxiety. he is not anxiety. evan hansen fucks up and makes mistakes and probably internalizes a lot of things. very polite when in public but he can be a bit snappy (as seen w evans comment abt how zoe’s parents have never been poor i believe? it was something he said to zoe)

soft spoken, most of the time. probably not the kind of guy to vocally ask for things until he’s at a comfortable enough point that he feels like he’s not bothering you (same buddy)

i see evan as someone who gets frustrated with himself easily. not as a sense of “god i wish i were normal” but more of a “i should be able to do this, why cant i do this, i want to do this but i cant” because sometimes it’s just a matter of i literally cant do this and i dont know why? and god its so frustrating sometimes

jared:

jared kleinman is a fucking asshole and he knows it. very sarcastic and uses it to cover up his own insecurities, probably the kind of dude who laughs in your face when you tell him off when internally he’s just OH FUCK OH SHIT FUCK FUCK FUCK

a lot of ppl write jared as being insecure abt his weight and tbh i don’t see that being a problem for him? i see jared as being insecure abt the fact he comes off very snarky and assholeish but he turns it around and tries to own it even though… that’s not something you want to be proud of? and he knows that

not the kind of dude who stops to assess his feelings. he powers through shit and insists he’s okay until he’s out of steam. i think it was psy who said he’s a “needs therapy boi” and tbh she’s right? 

can be very passive aggressive imo it’s something he really needs to work on.

arrogant, sarcastic, and just a big fucking dick who needs to learn how to watch his mouth.

zoe:

not an pure baby angel, by any means. we’re at a disadvantage because we only see zoe when she’s sort of grieving (because grief can and will come in different ways, and while i see her as not missing connor, i do think that her pushing away her feelings is a form of her grieving imo? it’s a weird thing to explain but there’s a part of zoe that does miss (the old) connor’s presence as w the fake emails evan “gave her her brother back” (albeit a very fake version of connor) and sort of standoffish when it comes to the subject of connor

a bit of an ambivert. extremely outgoing when she’s around her friends or when it comes to music and other things she loves.

very individualistic! her style tends to have doodles on her clothes, she dyes her hair a lot, she probably would be the kind of person to make her own jewelry!

very sweet. the castng call for zoe describes her as being the kind of person who learns the names of the kids who sit alone at lunch and thats she goes out of her way to be nice to people since. connor. yeah.

thats all ive got for zoe but u can always send questions in and i can say yes or no after i ask my pals too

alana:

smart gal! valedictorian! president! i love her! tends to overshare a bit. anxiety + depression gal.

probably into gardening tbh? i can see alana having succulents in her room and maybe a dog that just chills with her.

dont be afraid to make alana mouthy. alana is someone whos extremely headstrong in her actions imo and does what she believes is right, even if others dont believe that. like… think about the fact that she literally published what was believed to be connor’s suicide note because she thought it’d get them the last bit of help they needed for the orchard. it literally fucked the murphys over - but she never considered that?

very much an extrovert. just really wants to belong, man. very optimistic on the surface but i can see her being a little less so underneath. she looks on the bright side because if she doesnt, she doesnt know who will and idk i dont think alana’s the kind of person who just... lets that risk be there.

connor:

we dont kno much abt connor in canon but uhhh…. i can see connor as being a loner, sort of aggressive by accident (tbh this dude’s probably used to people being a dick to him so he’s just sorta standoffish in response) but like… whenever i write connor i usually write him as getting better? he’s gotten the help he needs and he’s doin better 

artsy depressed dude. poetry, painting, ect - whatever u want tbh. i just see connor, with help, finding himself in art or something creative (theatre and music included! u do u!)

very much a reader. this dude both has a lot of books on his bookshelf and a lot more books he hasnt fucking read because hes terrible at reading new books. (i personally hc he loves all of poe’s work)

to sorta sum connor up: bold, but not outgoing. caring, but not obvious with it (once he gets help btw). easily angered but sometimes he just doesn’t fucking know why and that frustrates him further. troubled.

honestly if u want to see one of my fave connors - check out @ask-sincerely-memes​! i rly love how they portray all three of the boys, but connor is by far my favorite! (mod con and/or mod ev if u read this i love u)

jeremy:

anxiety boy, but not evan hansen level of anxiety. more just… self deprecating, not super confident in himself, probably underestimates himself a lot.

jeremys hard to explain sometimes because a lot of his actions and dialogue comes naturally since i can actually relate to jeremy a lot, personality-wise? a really good fact to throw out there is i don’t think jeremy’s the kind of guy who just goes for stuff sometimes. he has to sorta be hyped up by others imo. michael motivated him to sign up for the play, rich and michael both played parts in getting him squipped (michael in the aspect of “lets check this out and see if its legit” bc i doubt jeremy would have genuinely done that on his own).

which really means jeremy isnt the kind of guy to just… confess things, unless it’s built up enough (i.e. jeremys confrontation w reader in unlonely since it was a conversation he’d been thinking about for a bit). in canon, he didnt really… confess to christine without the help of alcohol (at the halloween party) or without other people building him up (voices in my head). 

im literally rereading jeremy fics rn because im trying to come up with a good way of describing him

extremely horny teenage boy. hormones suck. for anyone who writes nsfw: i dont see jeremy being incredibly kinky and sexual and dominant (god forbid) his first fucking time having sex. especially if its both him and the readers first time. sex can be clumsy. you can laugh during sex. but also sex smells. like… once you’ve smelled it, you fucking know it - its just a weird combo of sweat and bodily fluids. 

that last part was just a PSA for ppl.

michael

not an uwu anxious depressed innocent baby boy uwu. remember that michael literally withheld the mtn dew red from jeremy because he wanted an apology. remember that michael wouldnt have been squipped because michael had been completely comfortable with who he is. michael likes his place. he doesn’t want to be cool and popular - he likes who he is. michael in the bathroom was a peak moment of michael finally letting go of emotions he’d been withholding - jeremy calling him a “loser” was the final straw that broke him. thank u this has been a psa.

a goofy boy. probably snorts when he laughs and im not projecting there what are you talking about-

okay, canonically: likes video games, likes retro shit (probably the kind of nerd who LIVES for arcades and record stores and vintage clothing stores even if he doesnt mix that into his personal style), very into music. there’s a lot you can do with this! 

imo he’s very caring? like. okay, yes he did withhold mtn dew red from jeremy - but michael still went through the trouble of finding and obtaining that in order to deactivate the squip. i think michael’s a fairly understanding dude, even if he has moments of anger.

just a very warm person. probably the kind of person who stops and makes sure people are okay when he notices they’re upset.

sometimes impulsive. sometimes very restless, imo. bouncy boy. 

like w jeremy - you can absolutely send me questions abt michael (or anyone tbh!) and i’ll answer them the best i can! im by no means an expert but ive got pals i can bother in order to help get a solid answer :3

christine

chriiistiiiiiiiiine, the love of my life. a gal w ADD! please don’t forget that! i personally hc that she got into a theatre as a way of like… sort of getting energy out since she’s fairly restless??? track girl christine….. also good

loves herself a lot tbh! like. in the show, its canon that she has stuff to figure out but i personally think christine loves herself and her body and is proud of who she is?

very friendly, very open, very passionate abt theatre! these are basic facts lmao

very sweet! very smart! she’s like... The Girl in all the movies that everyones like “oh no i love her” bc shes just a bubbly gal

writing christine is really hard to describe sometimes. like with all the characters, i write what feels right and sounds right to me and to others.

but like... to be honest, as long as you stay a bit happy and supportive and loving with christine - you’re on the right track.

jake

god - one of my favorite boys to write sometimes because there’s a lot to do with jake’s character

he’s the ultimate cool dude in high school. probably the kind of dude who would join a frat in college. handsome, popular, flirtatious - you fucking name it man.

sorta effortlessly popular and cool. there’s problems underneath - considering his family - but it’s hard to see that he has flaws when everything just comes so easily to him.

a very caring and sweet dude tbh. his friends mean a lot to him and he’s the kind of boy who carries your books and asks where you’re going and how you’re doing

he makes mistakes. he gets aggressive and protective and just angry physically - he did try to attack jeremy, albeit drunk, based purely on the idea that jeremy was having sex w chloe - so like... that’s a good thing to acknowledge

i said hes flirtatious and he is - without realizing it. someone probably has called him out on it and he’s like “sorry what?” bc he was caught up in talking to someone and not realizing that the dillinger charm never went off. because it never goes off. rip.

post-squipcident: getting better. sorta numb at first before happy, outgoing rich resurfaces because He’s Fine! Do Not Worry! but y’know like... he definitely has a lot of problems with what he did and who he was while he had the squip

a bit sensitive imo. easily upset on certain topics, easily angered on others. really misses his mom (i hc she died and his dad took up drinking as a coping mechanism and its mainly rich and his older brother relying on each other but thats just me tbh.)

rich is tricky to write when it comes to his home life. while i see rich’s dad as being a loud drunk, others see him as being physically abusive and so forth and - okay, that’s your decision, but please make sure you’re being respectful and you post trigger warnings because some people are in abusive homes and it’s not a fun thing to read. 

great sense of humor imo. flirtatious but in the more obvious “haha hey lets bone ;)” way. alternatively: flirtatious with squip, floundering a bit without it because all he knows is “haha hey wanna fuck” 

would probably fight a dick for his pals. rly just loves his friends even if he doesn’t show it.

chloe is a bit hard to write without saying “shes kind of a bitch” but like... she is and she knows it and she fucking owns it.

has problems. explore them. she literally was down to fuck brooke’s boyfriend since jeremy was dating brooke yknow. part of it could be alcohol but like... dont ignore that fact. like. she probs needs to talk to both brooke and jeremy.

i think of chloe as someone who can see the potential in others tbh. gets slightly annoyed when people arent achieving what they could - but i like to imagine she gets it after a while since some ppl dont have confidence and such. 

yknow the kind of people that take charge when the situation calls for it? that’s chloe. she’s very much a leader. cunning, ambitious - she’s fucking ready.

brooke

more of an angel i guess? sweet, a bit insecure, and a little more caring. not very dominant in situations - tends to be more of a follower (as shown w her and chloe’s friendship)

very caring actually. she literally followed jeremy out and said “uhhh he was kind of a dick to women but i know u like eminem” upon his death in the show??? like??? she literally went to check on this boy.

imo she sorta needs to learn to be bolder. to not take shit. shes probably the kind of person who says yes to a lot of things even if they’re conflicting bc she doesn’t want to like... bother someone and make things worse

lay - i… honestly to god…. dont know him well. ive never seen his chinese variety and he isnt as present in their korean variety because of the language barrier, but nonetheless he is an extremely talented and hardworking man. not only is he a talented dancer and vocalist, he works very hard at writing his own music, once lost his usb drive with all his work so he redid it all..

chanyeol - is allergic to both cats and dogs and Yet gropes every one that comes in a 100ft radius to him, so if that doesnt tell you what kinda man he is idk what does. google “chanyeol ferret” for the best google search of ur life. used to be part of a ferret loving club. also writes music, had more than one vlive in which he would eat mcdonalds at 2am in his music studio. the kinda dude who hits too hard when laughs but also falls on the floor n is the last one to let the joke go when everyone else stopped already

kyungsoo - hes.. interesting.. loves to cook loves his mom. with his teammates he can jokingly punch/pinch/kick them but with a romantic interest hed be the opposite i feel. AMAZING actor (pure love, its okay its love r my faves of his). hates when fans call him by his real name so i deduce he wants to keep his private life away from his public one. the kind to hang out in fancy suits with his actor friends after watching anime in his bed for a week. husband material

kai - second youngest. imo? silly kid.. like the boy next door kinda vibe. will cheese if sees a pupper and b very sweet and gentle with it. can b very thoughtful. turns into pure talent when onstage… hes lonely i remember him saying that. that he doesnt have a lot of friends to hang out with

sehun - maknae. with his hyungs he will be this spoiled brat persona, but honestly sehun is the one holding exo together no joke. hes sosoooosoos hardworking the boy spent nights learning basic mandarin and japanese (with suhos help) for promotions and was super proud to show it off. also is a very very hard worker when it comes to dancing. but. honestly i tried watching his vlives and exomentaries the boys boring as a sandwich bag. like he rlly needs an entourage to be more interesting cos thats when he starts sassing the mmbrs n all that. would die for exo. super close with suho

suho - i used to be hardcore into him for more than a year so ive got a lot to say. social butterfly. doesnt have an insta and yet appears on everyone else’s hangin out with them. leader. any mess u hear abt $uho??? forget it.. the boy’s been talking about refunds for stuff he bought on at least 4 different occasions. he’s sweet n shy n talented. thats of the nicer traits. from the worse one hes app not v clean in his dorms .__.// also can b v Specific n Annoying abt lil things like they told a story of how suho would hate anyone touching his bag in the dance studio so baekhyun would purposefully sit on it lmao. does indeed make a lot of dad jokes n jus wants ppl to laugh at them :( a lil bit of a health freak like would eat salads constantly n not eat yummy foods
