With everyone, I think, memories of early childhood consist of a series of visual impressions, many very clear but lacking any sense of chronology. To write a 'chronicle' of one's own childhood is, it seems, impossible; however honest one might set out to be one would eventually give a false impression, often with glaring anachronisms. I shall therefore adopt the method of grouping my subjects together, so trying to give an overall impression in space rather than by sequence of time.
