[Invader Zim fanfic] Ruin or Redemption Ch. 3: Breaking Free

"Subject IMT6. Status: Unstable. Threat Level: High." The text scrolled across a computer screen, followed by various stats. A man wearing a white lab coat anxiously read the information. The light from the screen reflected off his glasses, dark strands of hair falling over them.

"This doesn’t make sense..." he whispered to himself, “It was doing fine earlier.”

He looked up at the creature on the other side of the glass containment unit. It was a giant insect, about half the size of the man. It had a black body, shaped like an ant, and had wide wings. It had large, reddish eyes, the color of brick. The man stepped back as the insect pounded on the glass with its front legs and made a hissing sound. He then turned and quickly walked into another room, where he called for other researchers to look at the test subject.

The monstrous insect pounded on the glass harder and harder until the claws on the narrow tips of its legs cracked through the glass. It chipped away at the container until it made a hole it could fit its head through. Then, it charged through the glass, sending shards of it flying everywhere.

A crowd of people dressed in lab coats rushed after it. The insect spread its wings and took flight, weaving between shelves and machines, and buzzed towards the back exit. A women had the door open and was hauling boxes inside. The insect shoved past her and flew out the door, making her drop the box she was carrying. The research facility was swiftly put on lockdown, and all of the workers gathered in the testing room to make a plan to capture the mutated creature.

It quickly searched for someplace without any humans to hide. It wandered around behind houses, and would sometimes fly onto the roof of a house and look around.

It stopped next to a strange, blue house—the only house in the city that wasn’t owned by humans. Gir was in the yard, wearing his dog suit, kicking a ball around. He looked at the giant insect and ran inside, screaming. He forgot to close the door, and the insect followed behind him.

The house was quiet, apart from Gir's fading cries. Stuffed animals were scattered on the floor. The insect wandered around and accidentally activated a hidden elevator in the floor. It crept in, and was brought down to the underground lair. Gir was playing with a moose toy and Bhir sat on the floor in Sleep Mode. The panel on the top of her head was open, with a charger cable connected to something inside it.

The insect crawled into a chamber of captured alien creatures. They were held in glass containers like the one it had been in. It crawled over to a container holding a giant mantis-like creature. Its mandibles clicked together threateningly as it began pounding on the glass. The alien creature slashed at the glass, trying to attack the insect, and together they were strong enough to break the container. Bhir opened her eyes and sprang up as she heard glass shattering.

"Intruder!" she yelled, lifting up a few weapons from inside her head. "Gir, Duty Mode!"

"OK!" he yelled, then ran up to the ant-like insect and hugged it.

"Good enough," Bhir sighed, "Don't let it escape!"

She turned to the giant mantis, who had already provoked two other creatures into breaking out of their containers, and began rapid-firing plasma discs at it from a blaster in her head. It ducked behind another container, making Bhir accidentally crack it. A quilled raptor-like reptile burst out and slung foot-long quills at her. As she dodged them and aimed her plasma blaster at it, she felt something pull her back. The ant had escaped from Gir’s grip and he had tripped over the charger cable connected to Bhir while chasing it. She unplugged the cable from herself and turned back to the alien animals. She shot down the ant, firing through its exoskeleton.

She yelled, “Computer, seal the exits!”

“An exit is damaged. It won’t close all the way,” it replied.

More containers had been broken, the creatures already rushing out of the lair. Bhir ran after them, but she had no way to safely contain them. They busted the door open and scattered, retreating into the closest things to their natural habitats they could find.

It was dark out now, so Bhir activated her night vision. Gir stood behind her.

"Most of the subjects got out. Only four are still in their containment vessels!" she snapped. "If you had just fired at them like I did, we could have taken down at least half of them!"

"Is Master gonna be mad?" he squeaked.

"Inevitably, yes. Now help me clean up."

Gir whined like a puppy and followed Bhir back to the lair.

"In your defense, we would've had to release most of those animals," said Bhir.

Gir reluctantly began cleaning up the shards of glass covering the floor while Bhir worked on repairing the damages. The hinges on the front door were broken and the entrance to the lair they’d used was damaged. Just before midnight, they heard the front door open, and ran to greet their masters.
