The Boys season 4 trailer rambles. 1/2
Got a couple things on my mind after seeing the trailer 3 times, and if i get anything wrong...just accept am rambling and seeing shit.
this is ll out of order btw.
first off--
Sister Sage and The Deep date night? 👀
Tumblr media
Love how they are having blooming onions, just love how the deep is risking onion breath on a date with a girl way above his level, like you are such a confident man.
Tumblr media
Got a feeling this two scenes happen right after each other.
Tumblr media
His fucked up way to comfrot Ryan after he gets upset over killing somebody, I am more surprised to know that Homelander was there and presumably early enough to have stopped Ryan from killing pancake man, no doubt he is proud of him in the back doubt he is angry at him in any way, also we might get Homie eating/drinking soemthing other than oysters and milk but I would not be shocked if its for a guest of Ryan (Maybe Zoe?) unless he develop a healthy relationship with sugary food since he got his son.
Tumblr media
baking cookie scene I supposed (ignroed the edit on the image) wonder what conversation transpired here, did Butcher told Ryan about Becca and HL and somehow he still picked HL?
Tumblr media
Was he going to but he chickened out the moment HL showed up? or did HL gave him visitation's rights and showed up once he realized Butcher was gonna blabber, bcuz Ryan looked like he was about to cry.
Tumblr media
Are we gonna get treated to a whole ass The Seven on Ice sequence?
Like why? but also Homelander should wear this sparkly ass suit, like you know he would look so fine in it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and I guess we get spoiled the fate of the one characther I will never understand the vitriol and hatred people have over which is Todd, guess the Deep and company will just bash him and his buddies head like is Purge night, he might not be todd and I mean background dude next to hat guy but he looks like todd to me, so i guess we can have MM and his wife get back together.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
due to spoilers I know whats going on in this scene(I forgot to screen shot the face of Firecracker in this scene as she looks almost remorseful to kill Cameron over here) also they probably shouldnt have showed Cameron and the Gen V kids so early on the trailers, we can also see Sister Sage and Tek Knight in the background, and I think Ashley was also in the room which we then see her proabbly trying to figure out how to survive this shit with Also Ashley.
I love Ashley but she reeps what she sows after what she did to the Gen V kids cuz both Sam and Cate are direct victims of her actions.
What shocks me the most is that A-Train is in both the killing of Todd and Cameron, are these the moments that made him realize that he has to run away (no pun intended) from HL, this coupled with Hughie's voice over makes me feel like that might be the case.
end of part 1/2

RYAN: -she's here at sage and jack's place, knocking on the door impatiently. she's like 99% sure jack isn't here because she made the mistake of messaging him ahead of time, but even if he isn't, sage might be able to tell her where she can find him. she takes a drag off a cigarette while she waits for an answer.-
SAGE: -oops, she napped for too long, and the door knocking makes her get up off the couch sleepily and stumble to the front door. her hair is a mess, but she smiles seeing Ryan when she pulls the door open- hey!!!!!!
RYAN: -manages a little smile for sage, but damn ryan does not look great. she's got her own hair pulled back but it's still managing to stick out all over the place. and she looks tired, sickly even. she'd look even worse if she didn't have her shades on to cover her eyes.-
RYAN: hey baby.
RYAN: i dont suppose jack is home is he?
SAGE: -uh oh...she doesn't look so well.- no actually but are you okay?????? -is it bad she's a little relieved that ryan  needs help right now? it takes the focus off of sage at least. maybe she's a bad person for feeling that way-
RYAN: -exhales smoke, muttering.- figures.
RYAN: im just... peachy. -waves her hand around.-
RYAN: im pretty sure jack is avoiding me is all. whatever.
SAGE: -frowns- why would you think that??? -steps to the side so she can come in-
RYAN: -shuffles on inside. every step feels so heavy.- well first it just started with him cancelling plans. turning down offers to hang out and shit.
RYAN: and then... since easter i havent even heard from him.
RYAN: -gestures wildly again.- hes never here when i say im coming over conveniently.
SAGE: oh...... -she sighs a little and goes to get ryan some water because she doesn't look good- did something happen on easter?????
RYAN: no.
RYAN: ... -sighs- i mean.
RYAN: nothing happened with him.
RYAN: i was at james and roxannes for easter you know like we usually do. and i asked jack to hang out after but he turned me down.
RYAN: and its like whatever!! it didnt bother me. i just made other plans and...
RYAN: -runs a hand through her hair- i hung out with this dude nellie and. shit.
RYAN: man i fucked up.
RYAN: jack probably found out with his dumbass soothsayin bullshit. fuck.
SAGE: oh....... -hands ryan a cold bottle of water- that's pretty weird!!!!!!!
SAGE: what do you mean you fucked up???
RYAN: -takes the water bottle and casually sips- ...
RYAN: i was out partying all night.
RYAN: aaand the following day.
SAGE: -she knows the power of reactions so she just nods- it happens......
SAGE: it's okay
RYAN: -glances away, unfortunately a little irritated by that response. but... that isn't something she's about to take out on sage of all people.-
RYAN: i guess.
RYAN: i mean its clearly not entirely okay.
SAGE: yeah but.......
SAGE: sometimes you go backwards before you go forwards???? it's something i learned in the hospital i guess....relapsing doesn't take away from all the progress you've made so far
SAGE: i don't know what's up with jack
RYAN: -finds an ash tray to put her cig out in. there's gotta be one around.- it does when you could end up dead.
RYAN: hes being-- hes being an asshole. -runs a hand over her face, trying to contain the emotion suddenly threatening to surface. she isn't usually like this...-
RYAN: he shouldnt have taken me back if he cant deal with my shit.
SAGE: -ryan's words bring up some thoughts she immediately tries to ignore- i had no idea.....
SAGE: are you okay????
RYAN: ive been sober like... eight or nine months?? fuck.
RYAN: you know how dangerous it is to pick that shit back up suddenly?
RYAN: im fucking stupid. -sniffs-
SAGE: -she nods, expression softening- i don't think you're stupid at all
SAGE: i think you're trying your hardest and deserve more support than you're getting
RYAN: -turns back towards her suddenly. she can't hide the way her mascara is running past the shades.- ive got PLENTY of support.
RYAN: i always fucking did. -draws in a sharp breath, shrinking back and internally scolding herself for lashing out at sage of all people.-
RYAN: im just ungrateful.
RYAN: and he thinks-- he thinks im his responsibility.
RYAN: i never wanted that... i never wanted to dump all this baggage on him.
RYAN: ... but it doesnt work that way does it?
SAGE: -it hurts to see her aunt in so much pain. she feels small when it comes to trying to help, and it doesn't seem like she has any of the right things to say. are there any right things to say?- i don't think you're-- -she stops herself because she's thinking that won't help either. and she doesn't want to make ryan more angry and frustrated than she already is. it's understandable why she's feeling so strongly-
SAGE: i......
SAGE: he hasn't said anything so i can't speak for him but i don't think you're dumping baggage on anybody
RYAN: -rubs at her eyes under her shades- i know you dont think that sweetie... -sighs-
RYAN: but its still there. you know? people can see that.
RYAN: everybody tells me aw ryan its alright... these things happen. everything will be okay.
RYAN: and its fucking hard to hear when i see how much it hurts everybody.
RYAN: ive got one selfish fucking disease. and nobody wants to admit that it is. everybody just wants to think about me and help me and i cant fucking... deal with what i do to people. when i never gave anybody anything in return.
SAGE: -she looks down for a moment- yeah.......
SAGE: i know what you mean....
SAGE: it's really hard
RYAN: -sniffles again, running a hand over her hair.- yeah?
RYAN: i always thought hed understand too.
RYAN: ... maybe he understands too much. maybe thats the problem. i dont fucking know.
SAGE: -she nods before just...leaning over to hug her tightly-
RYAN: ... -carefully wraps her arms around her too, hesitant at first, but then she squeezes just as tight.-
RYAN: it sucks doesnt it?
RYAN: feeling like a burden.
RYAN: -scoffs- when everyones so good to you... like you dont deserve what people give to you. -pets at her hair-
SAGE: -her eyes are watering a little but she blinks the tears back- yeah..........
SAGE: and it feels like.......they're disappointed when they can't make what's happening go away.........and then you feel bad because they feel bad....
RYAN: -outright laughs about that, she's so relieved to have this conversation. that someone who gets it is actually sharing it with her.- FUCK yeah. jesus.
RYAN: like shit man... i know i need help but...
RYAN: theres only so much anybody can do for me. i gotta figure out the rest of it on my own.
RYAN: and i just... want people to be there sometimes. i just wanna know we can all still be cool without people worrying about me all the time.
RYAN: slap me on the wrist from time to time to keep me straight. its whatever. but fuck... aint nobody my keeper. i wouldnt wish that on anybody hahaha.
SAGE: -keeps holding onto her. her eyes are still brimming with tears but she's trying to blink them back- i know right?????? like..........sometimes you just know they're thinking about what you're struggling with?????? even if they don't say it.....
RYAN: -pulls away to frame this sweet niece's face, brushing away her tears, but only to make way for more. it's good that she's crying. it's good that it makes ryan want to cry more too.- well hey...
RYAN: if you ever need someone to feel like a pathetic loser with then im your girl.
RYAN: we dont gotta keep it together for anybody... just for a lil while. that sound cool?
SAGE: -she nods, forcing a smile- you can always come to me too!!!
RYAN: -pets at her hair some more.- im gonna do that.
RYAN: we can just veg and eat ice cream and watch sad movies and shit. itll be great.
RYAN: we should do that tonight.
RYAN: ... and jack cant avoid me if im already here. -snorts-
SAGE: -she giggles a little while sniffling- i like the sound of that!!!!
SAGE: like a sleepover!!!!
RYAN: hell yeah.
RYAN: please tell me youve already got ice cream...
SAGE: DUH!!!!!!!
RYAN: thank FUCK. -laughs-
RYAN: grab the ice cream... ill get us something REAL sappy to watch.
SAGE: -she giggles with ryan and wipes her own face off- okay but no movies where the dog dies!!!!!

Jenny’s Belated Live Blogging - Week of 7th January 2019
- Right! Time for the longest one of these ever since I finally caught up on the whole week. I am kind of glad I waited and just watched this whole week together and that I kind of knew mostly what had gone on. It was sort of more like when I go back and watch 2012/2013 episodes, which was nice. I feel like maybe it made it a bit more palatable to me because basically nothing I’d read in the live blogging this week made me want to watch. (I tried to title each section to make this a bit easier to read through)
Overall - I think in general I enjoyed the beginning of the week more than the end. Now, the whole Mandy thing was insane and kind of ridiculous but I liked the feel of the episodes more for some reason. Maybe it was the slightly slower pace, more breakfast scenes, more hanging around feeding the pigs (RIP Gloria), more history being used, that it just felt different and I liked that. Thursday and Friday I think just felt even more contrived so that put me off a bit more. Though I did appreciate the community feel on Friday with everyone knowing and asking about Vanessa and Rhona being at the hospital and what not.
Jessie and Marlon - But let’s dig in. First we had the wedding...which was...so not about them it’s almost hilarious. It really does make me a little sad because in general, while I don’t think they’re the greatest couple, I like Marlon and Jessie and their interactions between the bigger milestones in their relationship. The bigger stuff always feels forced though, or rushed, or like it was delayed and then rushed. I don’t know, it doesn’t fill me with confidence for their longevity and that bums me out a bit because I really want to like them more and I like their little family unit and I don’t want that broken up. But despite no one caring about their wedding, even April who’d rather go to school and then Billy and Ellis weren’t even around, I did sort of enjoy the hijinks of Jimmy sleeping through it and Mandy crashing. Also Paddy fixing Marlon’s tie while Harriet explains to Jessie that she’s marrying both of them.
The Aaron and Billy Debacle - Speaking of Billy, I still think it’s insane that Aaron isn’t more involved. And maybe he will be, but it still feels wrong to hear other people go on about it and for Chas to be boycotting weddings and barring Marlon from working at the pub (which, thank god that’s over thanks to a wrestler. Oy!) over it when she had literally a two second conversation with him about it. It’s hard because we know the severity of what happened to him in prison with Jason dragging him to Gordon’s cell but everyone else just keeps saying ‘Oh Billy gave Aaron a hard time in prison’ and that just...if he was involved in the group that dragged to that cell...doesn’t cut it as an explanation of his involvement. And it’s hard to watch without knowing if anyone ever will understand or you know...ask Aaron about it further. Or even ask Robert who knows. Robert doesn’t even have to tell them the details, just that it was a lot more than ‘a hard time’ that it had to do with him being gay and that it had to do with Gordon. I think that would be enough to get the point across. I don’t know, maybe those spoilers about Aaron being nervous about going out because of Billy are true and that tiny clip in the producer video was a panic attack or something and they will get back to Aaron’s involvement in this story but until then, I’m going to think it’s weird.
Mandy and Vinny - Now, on the subject of Mandy...wow the confusion. Haha. I mean, I kind of enjoyed her presence and wouldn’t have mind her staying longer, but I’m still utterly baffled at everything that happened with her weird little return. But I did enjoy seeing her and Marlon and Chas and Sam all sort of running around worrying about Paddy. It felt more like old Emmerdale and it was nice. Now the source of all of that worry being over an old letter that suggested that Paddy’s real father might be a random wrestler was...an interesting choice. I just want to know if Vinny is going to be his son after all because the similarities were obviously staggering. But were they staggering just because they wanted to do the comedy beat of Marlon announcing to Chas that Paddy has a son so they could throw us off before getting to the wrestler (I still can’t believe this is a thing). Or are they going to go somewhere with it since Vinny asked why she didn’t tell him the real reason she came when they were leaving and she said it wasn’t the right time. What does any of it mean?!
- I guess my thing with the idea of Vinny being Paddy’s son is that if he is and he knows he is, I wouldn’t think he would be that calm about it you know? And I would expect he would have known who Paddy was when he bumped into him and would have had a different reaction. And also there’s the ‘why now’ of it all. If this was something Vinny just found out, you’d think he’d not care about his mum taking her time telling him, that he’d just blurt it out. But he didn’t seem to really care, so maybe it was just about that comedy beat. But then what is the real reason she came?! So confused. I guess we’ll find out eventually.
- I did enjoy that whole cafe scene of Marlon trying to ply her with food and coffee so that she’d stay away from Paddy. It was good fun. And Brenda talking about Gennie was lovely. Even Megan remembered she had a son that died. All that history was nice to have remembered on screen. Makes it all feel more connected with the past and less like the show and everyone have just moved on from all the insane things that have happened over the years. I also liked having Mandy and Chas just hanging out at the bar together for that one scene. Since Chas and Charity rarely get to be buddy buddy these days, it was nice she had a brief substitute cousin.
Paddy and his Daddy (and an Aaron sighting) - That sounded wrong. Haha. So...it was interesting to hear a bit more about Paddy’s family history because I didn’t know much about his past before. That said, this whole wrestler thing is insane. And are we really going to have this Bear guy come and be on the show now? Is he going to lead to something else? More family if he has kids? Half siblings? I just don’t quite understand what the implications are from this story or what it will mean for future characters on the show. It’s certainly an odd one. I guess if Vinny still turns out to be his son, since he’s animal obsessed, maybe him coming to study under Paddy at the vets would make some sense for why he’d come back to the village. But again, I still don’t get Vinny. At least this random story did give us an Aaron appearance for minute or two. Although, I wish he’d been involved for more than just that one scene. I just want Aaron to feel like he’s properly a part of village life again, not just brought in to offer some sagely relevant advice and then depart again. I mean, it was a good scene but it did feel a bit weird, him showing up and being all ‘I heard about Vanessa and now I’ve been briefed about your plot Paddy so let me do my whole ‘relate things back to Gordon’ bit and tell you biology doesn’t matter’. I just wish he’d been there on Thursday at least with Robert at the bar while they waited for news on the trial. Robert could have just been updating them through Rebecca who was apparently at court (was Robert at court or not. Still confused about that) and Aaron could have noticed something going on between Marlon and Chas and he could have been like ‘alright spill’. And he could have agreed with Chas that she had to tell him because he deserves to know because Aaron hates when people keep secrets like that from him and don’t let him make his own choices about stuff. It would have made sense. And then he could have followed that up on Friday with his little chat and I feel like it would have felt more natural.
Ryan and Dawn - On the Ryan and Dawn front, I think it was a good choice for her not to date while she’s trying to get clean even if Ryan seems to have a hard time getting that. But I was glad Ryan and Charity made up even if it’s just so I don’t have to endure any more scenes of her moaning to Vanessa that he won’t answer her calls.
Matty - Also, I’m glad Matty is going to get his surgery in April. I hope it actually gets to go ahead and doesn’t turn into some tragic affair but rather an empowering moment for him. I feel for him having to deal with Moira’s nerves about it even though I get where she’s coming from a bit and I think it’s good that they show that consistent reluctance in her. I think it’s more interesting that she’s trying even if she’s still struggling with it all than if she was just all gung ho about it and they forgot how much of an issue she had at the start. And I thought it was interesting too using Faith who had had a mastectomy for different reasons to have Matty explain that it’s kind of life or death for him too in a way.
Bernice finds a place to live - Best part of this was Diane sleeping. Haha. I still don’t understand why Liam is still living at the B&B. Where is this house he’s having renovated anyway? Can’t they all just move into Jacob’s fold or something? Or have Liam buy Brooke Cottage? The whole thing is still weird.
Maya and Jacob - still creepy and wrong but I’m glad it’s progressing and the tutoring sessions feel like a good step in this plot. It’s still one of the more interesting stories they have going on right now. Also...Jacob’s hair is getting out of control. haha.
Graham’s Alcoholism - This week did make use of those similar circumstances a few times, like bringing Laurel into the Graham alcoholism stuff. Now, I think my feelings on Graham are well known by this point. I find him completely dull and I don’t get him. But he was like almost a human in that conversation with Laurel, which was nice to see. Not so much when he then went home and opened up to Megan without once looking her in the eye. Also, watching him look after Amba was...strange. Haha.
Megan and Graham - I still don’t know how I feel about the whole Megan and Graham thing. It doesn’t really work but it’s also more tolerable than him just rattling around Home Farm on his own. And Megan in Home Farm works better for me than her with Frank. It’s not even about Graham. Haha. But having Take a Vow back up there where it started feels right. Miles was obnoxious though. As much as I’m sort of dreading this upcoming Vanity proposal, I’m kind of glad Charity is stealing it from him.
Cain and Moira and the Joe thing - On the Cain and Moira front...well...that’s getting repetitive. I still have such a hard time with this story because it all centers around Joe and involves Graham and Debbie whining about missing Joe all the time while Coira look guilty. It’s just, while I think the idea of Cain breaking down and having some kind of existential crisis over actually killing someone is really fascinating, the fact that it’s all to do with Joe and all that comes with that is so boring to me. Speaking of history though, I did like that bit where Cain referenced Zak beating him up. Of course it also reminded me that Zak is still technically a character on this show...which...will he ever be again? I still think they should just wait till whatever this feud ends up actually being and just kill him off so everyone has to come back together. In any case, Debbie looking for Joe is already painful and I can’t wait till the truth is just out so we can get to the next phase of this painful mess. Also, again Graham is drinking because Joe is coming up. What does it all mean? Did he kill him? Are we going to have to endure a Joe comeback? Why put me through that? Haha. And does the random guy hitting on Debbie matter or is he just a random?
The Return of Lachlan - A bit underwhelming to say the least. Again, I thought Thomas gave a great performance but this and the Vanity stuff is what made the end of the week feel so convoluted. I mean, Lachlan finding ways to torture and scare Belle from prison, interesting. But it would have been more interesting three months ago after she betrayed him by not being in love with him after he murdered all those people for her. The nerve! Haha. And since it had nothing to do with his sentencing or her giving evidence or anything, it all just felt a little pointless this far out and with no catalyst for it. Why did he start at Christmas? It’s just odd and doesn’t make much sense. And bringing back Donny for it is also bizarre since not even Belle knew who he was really. I mean the scene where Donny went to the prison to see Lachlan was interesting, seeing them talk more frankly than they ever had before was nice since the first time around Donny just wasn’t interested in seeing any of the darkness in his son because he just wanted money. Then again, he just wanted money this time too but I think that last scene was supposed to show that he now at least understood what a monster his son had become.
- I would have loved to have had Robert involved though as the only other person who really knew Donny though. I mean, it’s not even about wanting Robert and Aaron involved because I like them, they just make sense to use in these situations. If Robert and Aaron had been at the pub too on Thursday, if they’d gone to the hospital with the others (hey sometimes Robert and Vanessa are friends okay), if he’d heard from Charity that it was Donny, he could have been the one to go see him at the hospital and convinced him to turn on Lachlan. Belle could have asked him or talked about going to see him and Robert could have said ‘let me. i know him’. I just think there would have been something fascinating about Robert and Donny meeting again after all this time since they were both too preoccupied with their own issues the first time to care about Lachlan, money troubles and the affair. Them both being like, wow we fucked up, he’s a monster now, would have felt kind of earned between the two of them. And the shipper in me would have loved for Aaron to go with him and sort of loiter outside the door and have Donny make a comment about Robert leaving Chrissie for him.
- That said, I do like that Belle got to have her last word. That’s kind of what I thought his return would yield in the first place, just some closure for her. The show loves doing that sort of thing. They did it with Rhona and Pierce too. I think it’s nice for the victim to get to have that closure but at the same time Lachlan felt like he was supposed to be a bigger villain than Pierce and I feel like he should have gotten to go out more in style. Or again, this all could have been done three/four months ago and it would have felt less absurd.
Vanity - Where to begin. The idea of giving them some angst and a near death experience to lead to feelings being shared and a proposal sounds good on paper for any ship. Involving them in this weird Lachlan mess and having Vanessa get stabbed by a person she’s never met and have Charity go after him when she’s never met him either just feels so anticlimactic. Haha. And their fight, while I agree, they had good fighting chemistry (let them do it more) was based on literally nothing. Now I do think that it’s well within Vanessa’s character to be the person that believes Belle’s paranoia is not just paranoia because she’s been there with being the first one to see something was off with Pierce. And I also believe she would speak up about it. And I also believe that Charity might go around to check on Belle, or at least she would have in the old days. But, like Aaron’s involvement with the Paddy thing, if they were going to do this, they should have been involved all week, should have been there for the break in, Belle could have mentioned the text to Charity and Vanessa the bar one day and Vanessa starting to think something was up from there. Something to build to them being there so it didn’t feel so strange. I mean it doesn’t make sense to involve them in all this anyway and for Donny to be the one to stab her (would have been better if it was a random and completely unconnected), but they at least could have made an effort to make it make more sense and be smoother. In any case though, they didn’t and because of that, it felt very forced and heavy handed having Vanessa keep chiming in and sniping at Charity during that whole scene. And then again at the pub. It was so contrived. Now it felt like a plausible argument for them to have if there had been any real basis to it. I kind of wish they had had scenes prior to that that would have made that argument make sense because that seems like a real problem they might have if the show cared about giving them depth at all. Not to compare them to Robron, but it felt sort of like the fight they had at the scrapyard after the letter incident when Robert was shouting ‘I try my best to be part of your family and I’m always in the wrong’. But that line and fight felt earned, felt like it had been building and I was happy Robert finally got to express some of that. It felt cathartic. This fight just felt confusing because it came from virtually nowhere and was more akin to whatever that argument that Pete and Leyla had before he cheated on her with Priya except this led to a stabbing instead of cheating. I just wish they’d put more care into it so it felt less forced.
- That said, Michelle’s acting was good and Vanessa’s fear for Johnny came through well and despite the fact that Charity had no clue who the fuck Donny was, I enjoyed her taking a pipe to his head. Although Donny just standing there and waiting to be caught was unbelievably dumb. Would have been better if he’d left Johnny and been trying to get back into the car when Charity went after him and if she hit him and drove off before the police came and just watched them take him in her rearview mirror as she sped off to the hospital.
- I did like seeing everyone go to the hospital for Vanessa though. It’s rare that you actually get all of the relevant people there and they’ve done a decent job of that first with Bernice and now with Vanessa. So that’s nice. That said, it still really shows how isolated Charity and Vanessa are when it feels shocking that Rhona and Paddy and Chas and even Tracy and Frank are all there and I forget how they’re all connected for a brief moment. Seriously, let them interact with other people more!
- In general though, it feels very much like the producers wanted to bring Lachlan back and they wanted to do some crazy near death stunt for Vanity so they decided to merge the two and contrive this situation but it would have been better to leave them separated because connecting them felt weird and wrong for both sets of stories. Or at least if they were going to do it, they should have started intertwining them earlier.
If you actually made it through all of this...I salute you.

Boyf riends Unsolved
Premise: Jeremy and Michael (two dumb boys pining after each other) decide to go on a ghost hunt in one of the most haunted places in New Jersey.
Word Count: 2704
Warnings: swearing, scary haunted shit
a/n: i’m.... i don’t really have an explanation for this. just.... have some boyf riends fluff
also a huge thank you to the love of my life @limpblotter for beta-ing <3
“... but whether or not it is definitively haunted will remain… unsolved.” Ryan Bergara’s voice dropped dramatically as the ‘unsolved’ stamp painted itself across the darkening image of him walking down the balcony of the Dauphine Orleans Hotel.
Michael laid back on his beanbag chair, smiling lightly. Jeremy was sitting ramrod straight, eyes wide.
“That’s not fucking unsolved!” he cried indignantly. “It’s haunted as shit! The… fucking footsteps? And the other guy heard them too?”
“Could just be the staff fucking with the guests,” Michael chortled, closing his laptop; one of the only sources of light in the dark basement save for the lava lamps. Jeremy continued to stare at the closed computer as if it would provide answers to his questions about the universe. As if Buzzfeed could prove the existence of life after death. As Jeremy stared, seemingly unaware of the world around him, Michael sneakily tapped his shoulder. Jeremy all but jumped out of his skin, whipping back around, pupils dilated in fear.
“Jesus,” Jeremy breathed, shoving his friend’s shoulder as casually as he could manage when he’d just about pissed himself from fear. “Can we at least turn on the lights?”
“Be my guest,” Michael laughed, but his friend didn’t budge an inch, instead staring at him with incredulity. “Aw, are you scared?”
“No!” Jeremy protested, but still remained rooted to the spot.
With a chuckle of false exasperation, Michael heaved himself up off his beanbag chair, walking across the room to flick on the lights. Jeremy visibly exhaled in relief before looking back at his friend’s laptop.
“You know where they should go,” Jeremy said thoughtfully, pointing at the laptop as if Ryan and Shane from Buzzfeed could hear his suggestion. “The Gates of Hell. Those are haunted as hell.”
“The what now?” Michael asked, plopping himself back down.
“The Gates of Hell!” Jeremy repeated excitedly. He opened up his best friend’s laptop again, typing in the password before opening Google and finding what he was looking for. “It’s this huge storm drain in Clifton with like scary demonic shit.”
He turned the laptop to face his friend, displaying for him several pictures of an eerily dark tunnel coated in graffiti.
“It’s not haunted,” Michael scoffed. “Just some asshole kids graffiti-ing scary shit on the walls.”
“Um, no,” Jeremy corrected in a disbelieving tone. “There are, like, noises and shit. And Red-Eyed Mike.”
“Who in the name of Satan’s left tit is Red-Eyed Mike?” Michael chortled.
“This demon thing. If you knock on the railroad ties by the entrance, he’ll answer with this train-horn sound.”
“Oh, really,” Michael deadpanned. “So you’ve tried this yourself?”
“Uh, no. I’m not going near that shit,” Jeremy stated as though it was the most obvious thing in the world, closing Michael’s laptop again.
“Then I’ll never believe that it’s haunted.”
Jeremy spluttered in protest, but no actual words came forth.
“You know… Clifton isn’t too far from here,” Michael said, a mischievous grin growing on his face. “Why don’t we go check it out?”
“I already told you. That’s scary shit. No thanks.”
“Come ooooooooon.” Michael nudged him. “It’ll be fun.”
“I’ll get possessed or some shit,” Jeremy retorted. “Not fun.”
“I’ll protect you,” Michael shrugged, causing Jeremy’s cheeks to flush slightly. Michael tried to hide the satisfied smile that involuntarily appeared on his face. “C’mon. I promise no ghosts are gonna hurt you.”
“Demons,” Jeremy corrected, though his resolve was weakening.
Michael bit back his laugh. “Right. No demons are gonna hurt you. Not when I’m around.”
Jeremy heaved a great sigh. “Fine. But if I die -”
“- you won’t -”
“- I’m gonna haunt your ass.”
“Ghosts aren’t real, but okay,” Michael laughed. They shook on it.
***
Saturday morning found them in Michael’s beat up old car, on the interstate heading toward Clifton, New Jersey. Jeremy’s backpack was filled with two flashlights, two night-vision cameras (borrowed from the school’s tech class), an old tape-recorder he’d found in his basement, sage, and a lighter. Michael’s bag was stuffed with funyuns, pringles, weed, crystal pepsi, and his ancient gameboy.
Clifton was only about an hour out, and they were there by 11 am, parking by an old factory and walking up to the haunted tunnel. Michael strode confidently to what Jeremy believed to be his untimely death. He plotted along nervously behind his best friend, hoping that the taller boy would shield him from the horrors that were to come.
They climbed up a short incline and found the wide, square drain; devoid of running water save for a few puddles.
“Heh,” Michael laughed. “If it’s a drain, it’s not doing a very good job. There’s no water.”
“That’s what makes it creepy,” Jeremy said, rolling his eyes.
“So… having no water makes it creepy? Not ghosts?” Michael smirked.
“Having no water is one of the many reasons this place is creepy. And demons, not ghosts,” he replied exasperatedly.
“Right. Sorry,” Michael laughed, beginning to poke around the entrance. “Ooh, check this out!”
Jeremy rushed up behind his best friend and clung to his shoulders, peering out over one to gaze into the tunnel shrouded in darkness. His eyes followed the direction in which Michael was pointing and he gasped softly.
An arrow pointed down the drain, labelled ‘The Gates of Hell.’
Michael smiled to himself, turning his head half-way round to look at his beanpole of a friend, whose eyes were wide.
“You gonna be okay?”
“Pssh, yeah, of course,” Jeremy replied, releasing his friend’s shoulders and assuming a casual position.
“Well, shall we then?” Michael asked, quirking an eyebrow.
“After you,” Jeremy said, pointing. Rolling his eyes, Michael walked into the tunnel. It was stupidly dark inside. Immediately, Jeremy stopped walking to rummage in his backpack and produce the two flashlights. He turned one on and passed the other to Michael, who was already studying the graffiti that had appeared thanks to the light that had been shed from his friend’s flashlight.
“Demons or not, this place is cool,” Michael nodded approvingly at the mess of satanic drawings on the wall.
Jeremy gaped at his friend in disbelief. “Are you kidding me? It’s fucking terrifying.”
“Like… cool terrifying,” Michael grinned.
Jeremy rolled his eyes again and pulled one of the cameras out of his backpack, passing it to Michael. He took the other for himself and clipped the tape recorder to his belt, pressing the record button.
He put the camera strap around his neck and held his flashlight up high, pointing it down the tunnel. Horrifyingly, it only illuminated about twenty feet until the dark abyss swallowed its light.
Jeremy took a few hesitant steps down the tunnel, disliking the echoing crunches of his footsteps. He stopped, and his heart almost followed suit. The crunching hadn’t ceased. Feeling the hair on the back of his neck raise, Jeremy whipped around. Michael was munching on a chip benignly, the loud noises reverberating around the tunnel.
“You almost gave me a fucking heart attack!” Jeremy cried, doubling over, hands on his knees, and taking deep breaths of relief.
“What?” Michael asked, oblivious.
“Your chewing! It sounded like footsteps!”
“Whoops… want one?” Michael held out the open container to his friend and Jeremy took one begrudgingly, casting his light around the tunnel while they were paused. The sight of the slightly dampened walls, the eerie graffiti… it was enough to make Jeremy’s blood run cold.
Jeremy turned off his flashlight and slipped it into his backpack, deciding to take some pictures. He snapped a few shots of the graffiti before Michael spoke.
“Wanna go a bit farther?” he asked, closing the container of chips and putting it back in his backpack with a grin at his best friend. Jeremy looked uncertainly down the pitch-black tunnel.
“Uh… sure?”
“I’ll go first,” Michael said cheerfully, leading the way. Jeremy stayed fearfully rooted to the spot, but as his best friend’s light moved farther and farther away, suddenly remaining where he was - in the dark - seemed like a terrible idea. He bolted after his friend, quickly catching up to him and grabbing onto his arm for protection. Michael looked down at him, amused, but Jeremy averted his gaze, his cheeks flushing.
All of a sudden, a loud knock reverberated around the tunnel. Jeremy gave a little yelp and hugged Michael’s arm tighter, his eyes wide as dinner plates.
“Hah! Maybe this place is haunted!” Michael laughed, moving over to the grimy wall of the drain and knocking on it loudly. Three times.
“Michael -” Jeremy hissed.
“C’mon, I’m sure something just fell before,” Michael laughed reassuringly. “HEY GHOSTS! If you’re here, why don’t you knock back? Or, uh… Red-Eyed Mike? Why don’t you give us a little shout?”
“Jesus Christ…” Jeremy whispered, squeezing his eyes shut.
“See? Nothing,” Michael chuckled. Jeremy cracked open an eyelid to look around them and relaxed slightly before his friend spoke again. “I told you, there’s no such thing as ghosts.”
As soon as the words were out of his mouth, however, his flashlight flickered off, leaving them in complete and utter darkness. Jeremy yelped again and, reservations forgotten, buried his face in his best friend’s chest, holding on for dear life.
“We’re gonna die, we’re gonna die, we’re gonna die,” he muttered, clinging onto the red hoodie that smelled faintly of weed.
Michael’s hand rested on the back of Jeremy’s head, the other wrapping around his back comfortingly. “Dude. We’re fine. This flashlight is like a bajillion years old.”
Jeremy didn’t say anything, enjoying too much the feeling of being held by his best friend.
“Where’s yours?” Michael asked gently.
“Backpack,” Jeremy muttered, and he felt his bag being unzipped and searched through. With a click, they were suddenly engulfed in light. Jeremy let go of the breath he didn’t know he’d been holding; reluctantly disentangling himself from his friend’s arms.
“You okay?” Michael touched his arm. Jeremy nodded, looking up into his friend’s smiling face. But his eyes looked a bit perturbed.
“Yeah, are you okay?” he asked with concern as his friend averted his gaze. He suddenly gasped. “Michael! Were you afraid of the ghosts?”
“No!” Michael denied, his cheeks flushing.
“You were!” Jeremy accused gleefully. “You were afraid of the ghosts!”
“Uh, demons, more like,” Michael corrected abashedly, and Jeremy grinned, punching his friend on the shoulder.
“Aha! I knew it,” Jeremy smiled in satisfaction.
“Yeah, yeah,” Michael grumbled in disgruntlement. “Do you wanna keep going, or not?”
“I mean… if you’re not too scared.”
“Shut up.” Michael rolled his eyes and led the way.
They walked for a few more minutes in relative silence, save for the few rustlings of small animals or the rattling of rocks. Each noise made Jeremy jump a little, but Michael remained fairly stoic. Jeremy grabbed Michael’s hand after a particularly loud noise right behind him, and didn’t let go; too scared to be embarrassed by his affection.
“Woah, what the fuck is that?” Michael said after a moment, pointing the flashlight down the tunnel at a spidery shadow stretching up the wall. Jeremy shuddered and whipped out his camera, snapping a quick picture as they approached.
“Shit, it’s a tree,” Michael laughed as they finally came within a few feet of it. It was small, but eerie, hung with strange objects no doubt left there by explorers such as themselves.
“Should trees be growing down here?” Jeremy asked nervously as Michael took a seat at its base, leaning his back against the trunk.
“Oooh, spooky! Plant life!” Michael mocked, wiggling his fingers teasingly.
Jeremy rolled his eyes with a soft scoff, sitting down next to his friend and stretching his long legs out on the slightly dampened ground. Michael unzipped his bag and passed Jeremy the crystal pepsi, letting him take the first long swig.
“So how far does this thing go?” Michael asked, looking down at the tunnel ahead.
“They say it goes miles underground,” Jeremy replied in a hushed voice. “And that at the very bottom, there’s a final room that you have to lift these huge axes to get into. And that’s the entrance to hell.”
Michael let out a very loud bark of laughter that echoed around the concrete walls. “That’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard,” Michael chortled gleefully, wiping at his eyes.
Jeremy shrugged. “I’m not sure if I believe it, but not many people go that far down. People normally turn back before they’re half-way.”
“Yeah, because they got tired,” Michael laughed.
“Or they heard noises!!” Jeremy protested. “Or they found demon trees, or their flashlights turned out…”
“Okay, okay,” Michael conceded, holding up his hands. “I gotta admit, it’s pretty creepy down here.”
“You were scared,” Jeremy said smugly.
“I wasn’t scared,” Michael grumbled.
“Liar!” Jeremy cried. “You so were! You were trying to act all cool, but you were all wigged out…”
“I wasn’t ‘wigged out’ ‘cause of the flashlight,” Michael mumbled, glancing off to the side.
“Oh?” Jeremy said, cocking an eyebrow. “Then what was it?”
Michael shrugged before getting to his feet. “We should keep walking.”
Jeremy got to his feet as well, following his friend’s light. “C’mon Michael, what were you freaking out about?”
“It’s nothing!” Michael protested, averting his eyes and moving the flashlight around the tunnel.
“Michaaaaael,” Jeremy whined, pulling him by the arm to stop him. “What was it?”
Michael flushed. “You hugged me.”
Jeremy could have died on the spot. “O-oh, uh, s-sorry, I was just scared… I-it didn’t mean -”
“It was nice,” Michael shrugged, glancing up over his glasses into Jeremy’s shocked and beet-red face. He shyly took his friend’s hand. Jeremy grinned, biting his lip abashedly.
“It was nice?” he asked, leaning forward.
“Yeah,” Michael said somewhat breathlessly, doing the same.
When their lips were inches apart, a loud shriek filled the tunnel and their ears. A woman’s deadly, unearthly scream. Both boys jumped and yelled at the sudden noise, immediately tearing down the tunnel in the direction from which they came, not ceasing their sprint until minutes later, when they’d emerged once more into the sunlight.
They both doubled over, panting, their eyes squinting in the sudden onslaught of natural light. Michael was the first to laugh, a throaty chuckle that quickly turned hysterical; his eyes beginning to stream as he lost control. Jeremy giggled nervously then as well, and soon they’d both completely lost their composure, cackling like hyenas.
“W-what are you laughing at?” Michael finally choked through his gasps.
“I can’t believe we almost had our first kiss in the f-fucking Gates of Hell,” Jeremy choked out, wiping at his streaming eyes. “What are you laughing at?”
Michael wheezed, clutching his gut. “I fucking forgot I put a scream sound alarm on my phone to freak you out,” he laughed.
Jeremy’s eyes widened. “Are you fucking - that wasn’t a real scream?!”
Michael shook his head, overcome with laughter again. Jeremy sat back against a rock, hiccuping slightly and clutching his sides. Michael sat beside him, his giggles still subsiding. Once they were quiet, the awkwardness of their situation washed over them.
“So, uh… that was your way of telling me you liked me, right?” Jeremy asked suddenly, biting his lip. “That… you liked hugging me?”
Michael’s cheeks reddened, and he shrugged. Jeremy smiled, unused to this abashed version of his best friend.
Jeremy seized the moment, leaning forward and catching their lips together. Michael’s hand immediately went to Jeremy’s hair, and they held each other close, still exhilarated from their somewhat near-death experience. When they finally pulled away, they were more flushed than before.
“So…” Jeremy said awkwardly, turning away and biting his lip.
“So,” Michael agreed, his usual confident smile returning.
“This’ll be a great story to tell. We hooked up in hell,” Jeremy laughed.
“You still think there are demons in there?” Michael asked, jabbing his thumb at the dark mouth of the drain.
“That will remain… unsolved,” Jeremy replied in a deep voice.
“Unlike your sexuality! Hah! You’re bi,” Michael chortled happily.
Jeremy through his friend an exasperated look and stood up, offering his hand. “C’mon. Let’s get the hell out of here.”
“Excellent word choice,” Michael grinned, standing up and following behind Jeremy, neither with an ounce of fear.

GrrrlCon 2017
Last summer, I attended Kerry Ryan’s Write Like A Grrrl one day intensive workshop in Brighton, on the recommendation of my good friend Lizzie.
I’ve been writing on and off since I was 16, but my limited education and lack of confidence in my own abilities have always held me back in actually doing anything about it. For about 10 years now I’ve known that my dream job involved writing. And not in the administrative sense of replying to customer queries that I have had in my day jobs. Ideally, I’d be writing about movies as that’s my other great passion. The problem is that with no qualifications or experience, you really can’t get a job in that world. And my experience at school was such that I could never see myself going back to a classroom environment.
All that changed with Kerry’s course. Firstly, she is super friendly and not at all judgemental. I even felt comfortable enough with her to confide in her during that first meeting that I am a writer of fan fiction. Something only my fandom friends and a handful of trustworthy close friends knew at the time. She was enthusiastic about that, and most importantly, didn’t make any of us read our work out loud that day.
The other great thing about the WLAG course was that I met a group of amazing women writers. We’re all very different in our styles of writing, our approach to writing, what inspires us etc, but by god what an amazing group. At the end of the course Kerry advised us all to keep in touch if we could, meet up occasionally. She said it would be invaluable, and it really has been, in so many ways. We have helped each other when one of our group was homeless for a few months. We have talked through break ups, and encouraged each other on our writing journeys with tea and cake and weekends away.
For anyone interested, Kerry is holding another one day intensive this July in Brighton. If you are struggling to write or to find a community of writers with which to discuss your work, I cannot recommend Write Like A Grrrl highly enough.
But I am writing this blog to talk about something else entirely. Grrrl Con. A weekend long convention arranged by Kerry (@writelikeagrrrl), Jane Bradley of For Books’ Sake (@forbookssake) and Claire Askew (@onenightstanzas). And what a weekend it was.
Friday morning began with a train to Manchester. My best friend had sent me off equipped with screenshots of a map of Manchester, showing the way from Victoria station to Ziferblat - the social space hired by Grrrl Con to house all of us eager to learn ladies. Of course, I immediately got lost and a lovely Mancunian man helped me find my way.
I was going to be there with three of the women from the Brighton WLAG group, but as I have family up north I’d come up a few days earlier to see them, and so arrived at Ziferblat knowing only Kerry. My anxiety levels were through the roof because my brain was telling me it’d be just like school, where I knew no-one and no-one would like me. I kept to myself and took a seat for the opening keynote address, notebook in hand. Quickly the room started to fill up and a lovely grrrl called Rebecca came and sat next to me. I tried not to scare her away and asked her about her writing. Of course she asked me too so I was brave and admitted the extent of my writing was pretty limited to fan fiction. “Oh what kind?” she asked. Shit. I never considered for a moment that someone would ask me that. Deep breath. “Well it’s kind of specific…” I said. She nodded her encouragement for me to continue. “Err, it’s about the actor Jeremy Renner.” A look of recognition and a smile crossed her face. “Oh wow that is very specific,” she said, a small laugh, “about his life?” I was amazed that she knew who he was as most people look confused when I say his name, until I say he was in Avengers. “Sometimes, other times about characters he’s played.” We continued to chat until we were called to attention, and I think I knew then that the weekend was going to be much better than I’d anticipated.
Our keynote address was by Novelist Jenn Ashworth (@jennashworth) who came to talk to us about ‘Finding the courage to write and keep on writing’. I soon discovered that she had spent time in my home town of Preston in her youth, and I felt like I was listening to a kindred spirit with some of the things she was saying. How school wasn’t a fit with her, how she didn’t really have friends, how she found solace in books. And most importantly about how as women we often have to ‘don armour’ to protect ourselves, and that courage can be found in being vulnerable. She also talked about her community of writer friends and how much she takes from the support they give her. I was almost in tears. Her words resonated so clearly with me and the courage I have gained from the group of writers I have in my own support group.
Some pearls of wisdom that I took from Jenn’s talk included - Don’t let research get in the way, if you wait until you know everything you’ll never write it. If you find when you’re writing that you need more information on something, block it off and write ‘need info on…’ The first draft is your guide to what you need for the second draft.
Jenn then read an excerpt of her novel Fell which sounded intriguing. As we took our first break of the day Jenn signed copies of her book and spent time talking to every person in the queue. Unfortunately this meant that the break overran into the first workshop of the day. I had to abandon my wish to get myself a signed copy of Fell, but Jenn was kind enough to answer a question I had for her on Twitter afterwards. And once payday comes around I’ll definitely be placing an order for Fell.
The first workshop I had was with Rosie Garland (@rosieauthor) on ‘Silencing the internal critic’. As someone who listens to hers far too much (in all aspects of life sadly - not just writing) I felt I would get a lot out of this workshop, and Rosie certainly didn’t disappoint. There are 5 pages in my notebook filled with gems from this workshop. One of which was to find my “crime scene”, the point in my life when my internal critic started speaking to me. Despite my useless memory I felt I could pin-point this moment precisely to when my fiancé told me my writing aspirations were a silly dream that nothing would ever come of. Well fuck you Ken.
Rosie also told us to remember that the first draft is you telling yourself the story. It’s the sketch that lives under the painting. It’s the starting blocks to give you something to build on. Rosie, you rock. Tell Mavis to do one.
Before we knew it the morning sessions were over and it was time for lunch, which is when my grrrls finally arrived in Manchester. I joined them for some food and a quick catch up and then we headed off for our afternoon workshops.
Mine was ‘Making Art is hard and that’s okay’ a zine workshop for wannabes, imposters and would be creatives with Sasha de Buyl-Pisco (@sashadebuyl).
And here, for anyone who wants to see, is my creation…
It’s about my friends and what you all mean to me. Yeah I’m a sap, so what?
We finished the day with a ‘Path to Publication’ Panel chaired by Jane, and featuring the aforementioned Rosie Garland and Grrrl Con organiser and novelist Claire Askew, alongside poet and playwright Afshan Lohdi (@ashlohdi).
Lots of talk on what the path looked like for them (clue - it was very different for each of them), and sage words of advice and encouragement for us all. My take away words of wisdom were “You can only have a first book once, so make sure it’s ready.” Thank you ladies.
Right, who’s ready for day 2..?
