Why the fuck is it so hard for able bodied people to get their heads around the fact that specifically physically disabled people are not actually accommodated most of the time?
Whether it be the inaccessibility of a building due to stairs, heavy non auto doors, ramps that are too steep, broken elevators or just non existent elevators, etc the list goes on and on. Or now public spaces that let’s say are otherwise perfectly accessible are now inaccessible to so many people because so many people refuse to wear a fucking mask when it would cause then no harm (maybe just a bit of sweat) to wear one.
The fact that abled people don’t see just how fucked up and inaccessible the world is blows my fucking mind. Just because someone “can” do something or go somewhere doesn’t mean they should have to do that or that it’s safe for them to do so. Like sure I can do stairs but holy shit by the time I’m at the top I’m in so much pain and I feel like I’m gonna pass the fuck out man.
Bottom line, the world is really fucking inaccessible and that needs to be fixed. Physically disabled people’s voices need to be listened to and not talked over by ableds who think they know what’s best for us or who think the world is perfect as it is

me: hey what if there was AU where instead of saving Leo from the prison dimension Mikey accidentally made a portal to the future and saved future Leo instead?
one hand slip later: oh.
anyways I made a peepaw AU!!! I'm so nervous to post this haha~ but I know that if I don't post this right now I'll just shelve this project forever until I lose interest or forget the plot.
I'm naming this project "Size Upgrade AU"
Next (soon)

This is doubly the case for *actual* accessibility aids, which are so often far out of the reach of actual disabled people, the majority of whom are kept deliberately in poverty by “state disability benefits” being kept deliberately below the poverty line and workplaces being unwilling to provide the reasonable accommodations that would allow disabled people to work.
I had a remote job for 8-15 hours a week during lockdown, when everything was forced to be remote. Even on the lowest hours, I made about as much monthly as my usual social security payments.
Of course, once things opened up again, my workplace, a grassroots charity, was forced to merge with a larger charity and my job was lost. Finding another salaried remote PT job that allows me actual freedom to choose my hours and doesn’t involve phones has been pretty impossible.
It’s also notable how many incredibly helpful accessibility aids are proposed and made as prototypes by large corporations to showcase their skills, but never actually go into mainstream production. They are basically fancy PR and marketing campaigns.
Sedgeway, notably, started out as a plan to build a modern wheelchair that could handle the inaccessibility of the world, but once the designer started getting excited about marketing it, he dropped the idea of making it an accessibility aid and started aiming it as “a revolution in personal mobility” at wealthy abled people who could already navigate the world perfectly fine. (I highly recommend the Sedgeway episode of Tim Chambers’ Cautionary Tales podcast on Pushkin for the entire story.)

PSA to "prev tag" users
the new inability to click back through the reblog chain renders it impossible to access the prev tags you're referencing. there's literally no way. prev tags has lost any and all meaning or functionality. the prev tags are lost entirely unless you copy them forward.

Abled allies,
If you visit a business and notice that something is inaccessible, please mention it to the staff so they can correct it before a disabled person shows up -- especially if the problem might prevent us from getting into the building.
We won’t be able to lodge a complaint in person if we can’t even get inside, so please use your voice for good.

I'm going to get a walker. [Edit: decided on forearm crutches] The carpet at the movie theaters was so thick it was impossible for me to use my wheelchair on my own I'd need someone to push me, I really hurt my arm and back doing it myself which defeats the purpose of an aid. I'm also going to get some forearm crutches for really short distance walking outside my home when something is inaccessible, since my cane is absolutely not enough. Neither provide the safety of the wheelchair I need and the protection from spine pain I need, but they're my only choice in very inaccessible places.
Also I'm thinking of using big hair scrunchies on my handle bars to make people think twice before grabbing me. Another med tech did it again, he immediately apologized but still... don't touch me.

I fucking hate doors.
They’re heavy and when I have my cane let alone my crutches they’re a fucking nightmare to open.
Why aren’t there more accessible doors? Why is nearly every “accessible” or automatic door not working or up a goddamn flight of stairs???

Look, I have been working on this coloring for 5 days now? Maybe 6? Flat colors took about 5 hours (using Ibis Paint on a phone with no stylus is a pain in the shell) and I worked another 3 on shading and it's not even close to done. I feel like at this point I'll just miss the deadline, so I'm posting the flat colors now and will update once I finish the shading.
Still not sure if I'm gonna play with the colors more or not, like I made the pants brown and I'm not 100% sure I like it, I'll know more once I actually shade it. There's a chance I'm buying a phone with a stylus soon so it might get a lot easier to shade.
Anyways @abbeyofcyn I hope you like it even though it's not finished! I hope I finish before the deadline but even if not I'll still post it, though I'm not sure if I'll have the motivation. It's a huge drawing and I never do backgrounds XD

While it *is* absolutely true that there’s no such thing as universal accessibility, that doesn’t excuse *not* making the general environment as accessible as possible on a day to day basis.
The fact that trains and buses don’t come with automatic ramps as standard, instead relying on inconsistent and grudging aid from staff who are frequently either surly and aggressive or difficult to find is ridiculous.
The fact that accessibility information about layouts isn’t standard on websites and menus outside establishments is ridiculous.
