The Batfamily is a bickering, dysfunctional family. Which is to say, they spend every day arguing with each other, fighting it out, making death threats, and dramatically going no-contact for weeks.
But if there’s an all-hands incident in Gotham? A galactic invasion? Family emergency? That stops instantly. They become the tightest, most competent, dedicated group of siblings/butler/parents you’ve ever seen.
And it’s terrifying to see.

Tumblr media
You've probably seen this image. I've seen it many times. I have mixed feelings about it.
It's a funny image, and represents a good cause. It's usually posted by people who want to support fairer working conditions for game developers, and want to show support for smaller titles.
It's usually posted in contrast to something like Cyberpunk 2077, Watch Dogs: Legion, The Last of Us: Part II, or God of War: Ragnarok.
There's a part of me that cringes every time I see it, though. I imagine there may be other game developers who feel similarly.
I think the reflexive cringe comes from the phrase "shorter games with worse graphics." People being paid more to work less sounds great, tbh, and barring any sort of production pipeline blocking, I think most devs would be into that.
These are the thoughts that fly through my mind when I hear people say "I want shorter games with worse graphics."
Short compared to what?
Shorter than Elden Ring? Shorter than Hollow Knight? Short like Venba? Short like Celeste? How short could a AAA game be before, even despite posting this phrase, you'd find it unsatisfying or incomplete? How short could an indie game be before you don't consider it a "real game"? Games can be anything from Ulysses to a haiku, but it rarely seems like people are talking about the haiku style of games.
What does "worse graphics" mean?
I just can't imagine a world where "worse graphics" could possibly correlate to Hi-Fi Rush, Undertale, Hollow Knight, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, Celeste, Mario Odyssey, Wind Waker, A Short Hike, or Hades. Even though those are the types of games that I often see people use this meme in support of. Those games have incredible art that talented artists worked really really hard on. It feels like a bit of a sting to associate those beautiful games with the term "worse graphics." That phrasing, sadly, implies that photorealism is the bar by which all other games are compared.
Forever Games
Where do replayable games, like roguelikes, tycoons, crafting games, and farming sims land on the realm of "shorter games"? They're not inherently any shorter than a big AAA game, and they're designed to be replayable and to suck your time in. That can be great, but it also might be a treadmill that is not inherently any more honorable than a game trying to tell a linear story.
Are you really "not kidding"?
This meme has a very confident, smug energy and I think that tone invites this question: Do you REALLY want shorter games with worse graphics? I know this is going to depend on the individual lives of each human being who's ever reposted this meme, and it can never be truly answered, but it really begs the question of whether or not people REALLY DO WANT "shorter games with worse graphics." Because let me tell ya, there's a lot of shorter games with worse graphics right now and they ain't selling very well. Check the Steam reviews. Ask devs how many copies they sell on itch. There are many devs out there who make shorter games with worse graphics and no matter how many times people post this phrase, people don't seem to flock over to support those projects. And that sinking feeling of "oh, these folks don't mean the games that my friends and I post regularly on itch, they mean Hi-Fi Rush and Wind Waker" is a little bit demotivating, given the gusto with which this meme is posted. There are people whose whole careers hinge on the hope that there's an audience out there that wants "shorter games with worse graphics" and there doesn't seem to be an actual sea change that's helping those projects out. There is a treasure trove of games out on itch that you can play in between hyped releases, but most people's playing habits don't seem to shift.
Lastly...
...there are thousands of devs out there who work hard, collaborating with other devs and artists, to make their games the best they can be. Devs work hard to bring their artistic vision to God of War: Ragnarok or to Bomb Rush Cyberfunk or to experimental indies with intentionally-ragged art styles. Everyone is putting their heart into their art to make something that will connect with the player. Sometimes, this can be pulled off by 1 or 2 people. Sometimes, this will require hiring more onto the team. It's slightly dissonant to see people say they want to see "worse graphics" when you're trying to get a job in texturing or particle effects and want to deliver something your team is trying to push a boundary on. This is true in both small projects and big projects. Artists are putting their stamp on Horizon Forbidden West just as much as they're putting their stamp on Venba. There are artists looking for work in the indie space who want to make better and more beautiful "graphics."
Anyway, no disrespect to people who post this meme. I understand that it's a show of support and solidarity. I understand that it's just a joke. I know that it's not a big deal.
But I'd be lying if I said that these mixed feelings didn't flash through my mind every time I saw this hedgehog. Figured I would share them.

Day 19 (Day 25) - Complete November 24 2023
Picked up the cross training session that was meant to be yesterday. I’m actually missing the heavier gym sessions a little so it was nice to go in for a full weights day. I would normally start a weights session with a 10min treadmill run, but I skipped it today because I wanted to grab the squat rack while it was empty. Did squats, bench, lunges, split squats, tricep extensions and curls. Took about 45 mins, I think, I wasn’t paying attention to the time to be honest. Definitely more than the scheduled 20-30 though.
Day 21 (Day 26) - Complete November 25 2023
Rest day.
Ouch. Ouch. Ouch.
I should not have done so many leg exercises yesterday. This is bad.
Day 22 (Day 27) - Incomplete November 26 2023
Nope, it’s not gonna happen, my legs are still wrecked from Friday.
Tumblr media
Day 22 (Day 28) - Complete November 27 2023
Felt confident that I’d make the run ok. It was only a minute longer intervals than my last run, after all. My legs were mostly feeling better. I should have done this run in the morning, but I slept in instead and ended up running in the dark again. I went through the rice fields this time, and it’s actually really nice running out there in the dark. I’m sure it’s pretty safe as well, but all it takes is one psycho to jump you in the dark and it’s all over, so I guess I’ll try and avoid it in future.
The run itself felt pretty easy. I miscounted my intervals as I was running and I thought I’d finished, but then the timer went for one more. I was actually ok with this, I was fine to run another 5 minute interval, which is not a point I ever really thought I’d be able to get to. In general I’m quite surprised at how well my endurance is coming along and a part of me thinks I might actually be able to do this.
Also noticed that today’s the first time I’ve actually done the “Monday” session on a Monday.
Day 23 (Day 29) - Complete November 28 2023
Actually pulled myself out of bed early for once. Considered running today even though it’s not scheduled, but I didn’t. I did some bodyweight stuff at home - squats, pushups, sit ups etc. I don’t think it was for 35 mins but I’m counting it as my cross training. I’ve done extra on other days so I think it evens out.
iTomorrow is scheduled for a rest day, but I think I’m going to run anyway as I have the day off for a trip to the licence centre (urgh).

Deltarune Chapter 2, Just finished and here are some thoughts:
Tumblr media
Ralsei isn't a Darkner, but he's not able to exist in the Lightner World.
Darkners are reinterpretations, reimaginings, and dreams of things that exist in the Lightner World. They turn to stone in other Fountains (the concept solidifies and becomes unchanging) or they turn into mundane objects (like cards and junk) because outside of the theme of their own recontextualization they don't exist. The Dark is a form of exegis, a way of recreating the 'game' world.
This raises the question: Why can they exist in Ralsei's fountain? What is his fountain reinterpreting? -- My theory is his fountain is aware of and a recontextualization of the Game "Undertale 2" - so anything within the game, including the reinterpretations it creates, can persist there.
Each fountain, each Chapter is just the same game being retold, replayed again - because the world is still Undertale and is just presenting itself with the same themes, the same structure, and the same 'choices' like Pacifist/Genocide because it is expected to - because it was originally built to before the changes.
Whatever Kris is, whatever is using the fountains is doing so to keep the Lightner world from progressing forward. We the player have a game menu, interactions, choices - all of that in the Lightner world - but the plot in the Lightner world is allowed to progress according to its script only with minimal change. The times we would be interacting with and changing the plot, we're always pulled into the Dark Worlds - to solve a crisis that repeats, always with the same outcomes.
The only one telling us we have to close the fountain, and the only one telling us the world will end if we don't - is Ralsei.
Most of the more powerful characters in the game...like Jevil, Seam, and now Spamton - are aware of their realities being rewritten and of what happened in the time of ROARING that Ralsei promised would happen if the Dark takes over. All of these characters are outliers who couldn't be fully rewritten - whatever process is keeping the world stagnant and reset has failed on them.
Jevil is in an infinite loop, and the Dark has him quarantined.
Seam was torn apart and recompiled.
Spamton seems to be two beings, corrupted as one copied over the other. He's the Spambot from the Lightner world, and the Car Salesman from the Dark - and as a program, as either form, he's aware of his STRINGS - the lines of code that bind him to the Game.
These are things that happen when a program fails to execute, or glitches out.
All of these 'error' characters seem aware of 'Chaos', and of existing before the current iteration of their game loop.
I think Ralsei is still Asriel -- I think he's still the Asriel that was Flowey, actually. I think he or someone inadvertently helping him (like Gaster) - has rewritten the actual Undertale 2 into the world of 'Deltarune' (anagrams as a theme, remixing existing components) - a world where Asriel is away for college and not trapped forever in the Dark. A world where everyone loves and remembers him fondly - waiting for his return at the end of the week for the Festival.
Asriel is supposed to be the older brother, but Ralsei seems to be the same age as Asriel had 'died' in Undertale - the same child we see in the field of flowers. Does an older version of Asriel actually exist? I think Ralsei, or possibly someone else, has created a story where he gets to keep a looping world where his death and Flowey never happened - but maybe he can't return at the end of the 7 days?
De-termination. Undoing Death. Maybe the process here is incomplete or corruptible?
I think whatever is modifying the world - they used the 'Dark' to rewrite the world and reinterpret its components, to Re-Determine what's going to happen. I think every time a Player/SOUL shows up to affect their choices on the world and progress the plot, they sideline them with the worlds created in the Dark as a sort of treadmill, to keep them from playing the game that originally existed in the Lightner World and actually 'completing' the 7 day story.
We're told repeatedly by the metastructure of the game, and by presumably GASTER at the Survey_Program opening - that choices don't matter in this world. Every time we are given one, it's either discarded immediately, or affects nothing permanent in the Light World - only the Dark.
I think this is our antagonist, convincing us that the SOUL can't have an affect on the outcome because they don't want it to - they want this reality to continue, for the Dark to consume the world at the end, and for their reality to rewrite itself again so as to draw energy from it, from all the SOULS that run through the program/universe when they play the game again.
I presume it may be Gaster (or whoever narrated the Survey Program, but we're pretty sure that's Gaster, right?) as the 'behind the curtain villain' - I think Ralsei/Asriel may be playing into this loop or helping them, not realizing what's really happening or now unwilling to stop it after the first rewrite - because they don't want to be alone in the dark anymore like they were at the end of Undertale. I think Ralsei is sincere in his desire to close the other fountains, but I think he's unaware that the force creating them wants the ROARING to happen.
I think Kris, once it was determined he was the Vessel, was modified in the 'bunker' to be pliable, to be able to remove the SOUL. It's either the character of Kris (who, if you act out of character or pick dialogues that are kind, is called out by other characters for being different after the player takes over) - or whatever is controlling that vessel other than the Player/SOUL, that is creating the Dark Fountains and sidelining the progression and keeping the SOUL from modifying anything in the Lightner world. I think this process traumatized the real Kris, the character he was before we step in - because it seems clear from other characters he is terrified of that bunker.
A bunker which is a mystery to every character in the town so far.
By his character, I believe there is a second SOUL inside Kris, or something very similar (possibly an artificial version of a SOUL) that is the source of the Roaring Knight. It may also be that he was rewritten to be 'controlled' in this way - hence the underlying personality being so quiet, reclusive, and traumatized/repressed.
My guess is the titles here, like Knight, and Roaring, are phonetic plays on what is actually happening. Kris is the Knight, or the Night - periods of time when the SOUL can be sidelined and whatever our antagonist is can affect change and create the fountains. I think the Roaring is the Rearranging or Reordering, maybe? I'm not as certain on that one.
What Ralsei describes as the Roaring is an opening of too many fountains - the light world enveloped in total Darkness (full reinterpretation or system collapse) - and the emerging of TITANS from these fountains that devastate the world, shaped by their own fountains - leaving the Lightners alone in darkness and solidifying the darkners. I think the ROARING is a form of program crash, or total rewrite.
I think Ralsei may be disingenuous here - he doesn't want too many fountains to open - but he will never close his own. I think he is aware of what was before Deltarune, since he knows about the ROARING - and is trying this time to keep his favorable world going maybe?
It's hard to tell if he's working with or against the Roaring Knight (or their controller) - I think he wants to keep his world of friends and heroism, his Role-Reinterpretation from Undertale 2. I think he sincerely wants to close the other fountains, because the result he describes is what he had originally as Asriel, and Asriel could not have a role in Undertale 2 without this rewrite - as Asriel Dreemur he would've been Lost eternally in an endless night...
I love this interpretation because it plays into the nature of Dreamer/Dreemur (the Dark is the dream of the world that could be, and he is it's Prince), the nature of sequels in general (what we want and expect as an audience vs what would be organic to the characters), and a sort of meta-text about what an artist can do with a sequel (you can reinterpret, but not by much, never in a way that is unrecognizable and thus enchained to the original).
Undertale was a game with characters aware they were in a game.
Deltarune is a game so far where it seems characters are aware they are in a sequel.
Phenomenal, Mr. Fox!
--
This is a bit rambling but I had a lot I wanted to write down and it's super late. I might revise this later.

hi theree. you seem to know and rec a lot of good nh fics and i was just wondering if you know any fics where either naruto or hinata is sulking towards the other? like maybe hinata does something that hurts naruto a little bit so he becomes all sulky and pouty so then hinata tries to make it up to him, or vice versa? something like 'the art of seduction' by katraine (only that one is a smut 😂) i want to see cute sulky naruto or hinata haha
Hello!  Sulky...cute sulky...?  as opposed to sexy sulky lol
oh I thought of the PERFECT fic for you,,, definitely cute, i wonder if you’ve read it already:
“Doppleganger” by @peppercornpress - Rated T, Canon-Compliant, One-shot. Team 8 meets Naruto's doppleganger (but not really).
mmm....what else...
Cute Sulking Naruto/Hinata Fics
“Tsukuyomi Boyfriend” by @peppercornpresses - Rated G, Canon-Compliant, One-shot. Over a year has passed since the great Shinobi War, and people are finally starting to open up about their Infinite Tsukuyomi Illusions.
Chapter 2 from “My Name on Your Lips” by @katarinahime - Rated E (no smut in this particular chapter), Canon-Compliant, Series of related one-shots. Prompt: Naruto-senpai.
Chapter 11 from “Postscripts” by @waterrolls - Rated T, Canon-Compliant, Short one-shot / Drabble. Here's a drabble request!  Naruto and Hinata's first huge fight as a couple (because Naruto's a very stubborn man and Hinata's not really good at communicating) and them making up + Drabble Request: The Last!NaruHina; Hinata running on a treadmill while connected to a heart monitor as part of a stress test, Hinata's heartbeat getting faster and faster, harder and harder, causing Naruto to become concerned about her health.
Chapter 17 from “Postscripts” by waterrolls - Rated T, Canon-Compliant, Short one-shot / Drabble. (1) I have a request, maybe you could do when NH started dating, Naruto was still popular with his fangirls, they made Hinata feel a bit uncomfortable and sad, but Naruto reassures her that she'll always be the one he loves.  Thank you! (2) Can you write one about Hinata being shy because Naruto is surrounded by his fangirls but she's actually the only one he sees? ? If you can't that's no problem at all. Thank youuu ️
“Birthday Kiss” from “One Small Step” by Shawny Wong - Rated T, Canon-Divergent, Multi-chapter, Incomplete Series of related one-shots. What if Hinata had actually found the courage to approach Naruto at the Academy? How would befriending him change their lives? Drastic changes are the result of one small step.
“Karaoke” from “Orange and Lavender” by ReadingBennie - Rated T, College AU, One-shot. He talked with everyone and it was like he’d never left; turns out he’d kept in contact with everyone. Except her.
mmm that’s all I got.
My “Undercover” fic has sulky Naruto in it :) - Rated E, Canon-Divergent, Multi-chapter, Incomplete. Naruto and Hinata join the Twelve Guardian Ninja of the Land of Fire's Daimyo. But not really. Their mission is to smoke out the rat among them who's selling political secrets to insurgents, while making sure the other Guardians don't figure them out. Neither can tell when their acting became so convincing.
I’m sure there are more, so if anyone would like to add to this, please do!

DAY 4259
Jalsa, Mumbai                 Nov 4/5,  2019                Mon/Tue 2:24 AM
Birthday - EF Madhur Mohan Sharma .. Tuesday, November 5 .. our affection and greetings on your birthday and wishes for a lovely fulfilling day ...
.. in the days of life there be ever at the end of everything, something that remains pending .. something incomplete .. something that needs immediate understanding and resolve .. something that despite all the rest of the accolades at the work place, needs the reality of facts and situations that exist .. exist beyond all else .. and this apprehension dissolves all the hard work completed during the entire day ..
.. why so .. ?
.. is that there is reason for this to be accomplished ..?
I wonder .. for so long as you wonder there shall be no definiteness .. and does life really believe that there could ever be a definiteness in its operation ..?
I wonder .. !!
.. the accomplishment then of a task on professional playing field, does suddenly become a land mined desert when the field work is over .. what will have transpired at other places - not necessarily at home - but what where and how has the DAY conducted itself in absentia or what is it that keeps the absentia alive despite ..
.. the issue never comes to an end .. a task done and the hope that there shall now be some peace and value among us all , is an acute fallacy .. each day brings different scales of weight and wealth .. or the loss of weight and the presence of the wealth .. in not essentially its reality but its perceived reality ..
.. the work , works within its own parameters .. none is capable of replicating it .. a few bits and pieces here and there, but still an entire milestone to recover, while the treadmill turns ..
Tumblr media
.. those shy head downed postural ramifications , particularly since the object of desire, has been set aside by other more severe conditions ..
we know they are there .. yet we try hard to side step it and either someone else more proficient look and execute it, or take the brave step to pull out the ‘chadar’ and face the wind of speed and the responses of irrelevant discourse ..
.. for me then there is very little left to expect .. this is enough for me ..
.. so how now from her ..
.. I have no answer .. no answer at all ..
.. this Greeko - Roman discourse is going nowhere .. they that invented it fought for it , wrestled with it and brought result .. one way or the other ..
.. but the uncertainty that we build in our own minds and hearts shall ever be the most hurtful .. worse even than the original thoughts and solutions .. and never could I find the reasons for such ..
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
.. multiple hands do work upon me  .. to be resplendent in form and shape and looked desire .. the Channel wishes that .. yes there is that broad based desire to know of the other .. its normal human behaviour .. but in the connect with the visual medium it has its toll ..
.. never mind though .. “no one is perfect” .. if you remember those perfect words from a most important impressionable film ..
I leave now to fill the desire of another element ..

LIFE OF AN ASPIRING OT MEDICAL PRACTITIONER
Some would say going to a different fieldwork site is exciting because you get to experience differential diagnosis and get to experience how other OT departments function, as much as I agree with this, my experience wasn’t this optimistic. For me change of scenery is always accompanied by anxiety and distress and this was exacerbated when I learned I was going to a chronic facility with a possibility of getting spinal cord injury client.
They say there is a first time for everything, I learned this the hard way, the one thing I was drenching happened, tetraplegics as clients!!!!!!!!, for 2 or more minutes my heart pounded in a tachycardic manner, my anxiety levels reached a plateau phase, and feelings of distress engorged my mind because I had prayed for an opposite outcome, due to my conceived idea that it’s difficult to assess and treat spinal cord injuries.
They say that faith is taking the first step when you can’t see the whole staircase, the residue faith that remained helped me gain strength and confidence that I will manage. My faith was restored on first encounter with both client, they optimistic, willingness, perseverance and motivation to become independent. This made me eager to intervene and read more about the condition so as to help them achieve their goals.
Things don’t always go as prearranged, but learn to deal with this accordingly, at most cases avoid being hard on yourself, my treatment session for instance didn’t go as planned and I struggled with implementing my treatment principles but luckily my supervisor was able to note these and give me a few pointers on how to improve these looking forward in my treatment of the client this information was extremely helpful.
It’s always best to adhere to the original plan, but when this is an impossibility make the necessary adjustments which still try to improve the original goals. Supervisor was not so impressed by my alternative adjustments of the session plan because some skills that were ascribed to improve some performance skills where impractical and didn’t really achieve the desired treatment, her ability to note and correct this will allow me to set up and improve my treatment sessions in the future.
Always try not to focus on the preconceived thoughts that have been impeded in your mind in the early stages of practice. Supervisor advised me not to only dwell on basic ADL activities if the client is able to perform these independently, she advised that I prepare challenging activities so that the client won’t be bored. She advised me to shift from this preconceived knowledge that ADLS  are the most potent and main focus of the treatments and that I should also consider other areas of occupation such as instrumental activities of daily living such as(community mobility) and leisure.
Always have an understanding of what your client’s diagnosis is, understand limitations and complication of the diagnosis, supervisor encouraged me to learn more about the condition and the effects of muscle spasms on performance of occupations, she recommended a few reading that I should engage my attention to so that I better understand the impact of these on the performance of activities. In conclusion I would like to say that in the two days I’ve been on my fieldwork site I have acquired lot of information from both clients and supervisor that will help me in my planning and treatment of the client in the future.

Why Buddhism Is True: The Science and Philosophy of Meditation and Enlightenment by Robert Wright

So if you ask the question “What kinds of perceptions and thoughts and feelings guide us through life each day?” the answer, at the most basic level, isn’t “The kinds of thoughts and feelings and perceptions that give us an accurate picture of reality.” No, at the most basic level the answer is “The kinds of thoughts and feelings and perceptions that helped our ancestors get genes into the next generation.” Whether those thoughts and feelings and perceptions give us a true view of reality is, strictly speaking, beside the point. As a result, they sometimes don’t. Our brains are designed to, among other things, delude us. (p. 4)
***
. . . . Though the Buddha is famous for asserting that life is pervaded by suffering, some scholars say that’s an incomplete rendering of his message and that the word translated as “suffering,” dukkha, could, for some purposes, be translated as “unsatisfactoriness.” (p. 6)
***
In one seminal study, they took monkeys and monitored dopamine-generating neurons as drops of sweet juice fell onto the monkeys’ tongues. Predictably, dopamine was released right after the juice touched the tongue. But then the monkeys were trained to expect drops of juice after a light turned on. As the trials proceeded, more and more of the dopamine came when the light turned on, and less and less came after the juice hit the tongue.
We have no way of knowing for sure what it felt like to be one of those monkeys, but it would seem that, as time passed, there was more in the way of anticipating the pleasure that would come from the sweetness, yet less in the way of pleasure actually coming from the sweetness. (p. 8)
***
But the modern environment can take various kinds of feelings that served our ancestors in this Darwinian sense and render them counterproductive in the same sense—they may actually lower a person’s life expectancy. Violent rage and the yearnings of a sweet tooth are good examples. These feelings were once “true” at least in the pragmatic sense of guiding the organism toward behaviors that were in some sense good for it. But now they’re likely to mislead. (p. 41)
***
As the Buddha emphasized, our ongoing attempts to feel better tend to involve an over-estimation of how long “better” is going to last. What’s more, when “better” ends, it can be followed by “worse”—an unsettled feeling, a thirst for more. Long before psychologists were describing the hedonic treadmill, the Buddha saw it. (p. 41)
***
I was beginning to observe the workings of what psychologists call the “default mode network.” This is a network in the brain that, according to brain-scan studies, is active when we’re doing nothing in particular—not talking to people, not focusing on our work or any other task, not playing a sport or reading a book or watching a movie. It is the network along which our mind wanders when it’s wandering.
As for where the mind wanders to: well, lots of places, obviously, but studies have shown that these places are usually in the past or the future; you may ponder recent events or distant, strong memories; you may dread upcoming events or eagerly anticipate them; you may strategize about how to heed off some looming crisis or fantasize about romancing the attractive person in the cubicle next to yours. What you’re generally not doing when your mind is wandering is directly experiencing the present moment. (pp. 45-46)
***
. . . . You need to understand that staying in the present, though an inherent part of mindfulness meditation, isn’t the point of the exercise. It is the means to an end, not the end itself. (p. 53)
***
To look at this from a slightly different angle: the key to letting go of a chunk or two of my self was to separate the act of observation from the act of evaluation. I still experienced the anxiety, but I no longer experienced it as either good or bad. . . . Feelings are designed by natural selection to represent judgments about things, evaluations of them; natural selection “wants” you to experience things as either good or bad. The Buddha believed that the less you judge things—including the contents of your mind—the more clearly you’ll see them, and the less deluded you’ll be. (p. 71)
***
So, all told, we’re under at least two kinds of illusions. One is about the nature of the conscious self, which we see as more in control of things than it actually is. The other illusion is about exactly what kind of people we are—namely, capable and upstanding. You might call these two misconceptions the illusion about our selves and the illusion about ourselves. They work in synergy. The first illusion helps us convince the world that we are coherent, consistent actors: we don’t do things for no reason, and the reasons we do them make sense; if our behaviors merit credit or blame, there is an inner us that deserves that credit or blame. The second illusion helps convince the world that what we deserve is credit, not blame; we’re more ethical than the average person, and we’re more productive than the average teammate. We have beneffectance [beneficial and effective].
In other words, if you were to build into the brain a component in charge of public relations, it would look something like the conscious self. The anthropologist Jerome Barkow has written, “It is possible to argue that the primary evolutionary function of the self is to be the organ of impression management (rather than, as our folk psychology would have it, a decision-maker).” The only thing I’d add is that the folk psychology itself may be part of the evolutionary function; our presentation of ourselves as effective, upstanding people involves believing in the power of our selves. (pp. 85-86)
***
People are capable of convincing themselves of whatever stories about their own motivation it’s in their interest (or their “interest” as defined by natural selection) to tell others. (p. 99-100)
***
Buddhist thought and modern psychology converge on this point: in human life as it’s ordinarily lived, there is no one self, no conscious CEO, that runs the show; rather, there seem to be a series of selves that take turns running the show—and, in a sense, seizing control of the show. If the way they seize control of the show is through feelings, it stands to reason that one way to change the show is to change the role feelings play in everyday life. I’m not aware of a better way to do that than mindfulness meditation. (pp. 103-04)
***
[The conscious mind is] less like a president than like the speaker of the US House of Representatives, who presides over votes and announces the outcome but doesn’t control the votes. Of course, the speaker of the House may do some behind-the-scenes nudging and so exert some influence over the votes. And we can’t rule out the possibility that the conscious mind gets to do some nudging here and there. (p. 90)
***
. . . . Thoughts, which we normally think of as emanating from the conscious self, are actually directed toward what we think of as the conscious self, after which we embrace the thoughts as belonging to that self. (p. 111)
***
Why does our conscious mind have to spend time witnessing the presentation of reasons—that is, participating in the “deliberation”? If it’s just a show trial—if it all comes down to a contest of power between modules that have summoned whatever fortifying logic might support their cause—couldn’t the whole thing happen subconsciously, freeing up the conscious mind to do something constructive, like ponder the mind-body problem? Well, recall that the conscious mind—being the part of your mind that communicates with the world—seems to be a kind of public relations agent. “My guess,” said [Robert] Kurzban, is that the reason your conscious mind observes the debate, including the winning rationale, is so that “if someone ever challenges you or asks you why you did x, y, or z,” you’ll be able to cite a plausible rationale. (p. 129)
***
. . . . Getting close enough to feelings to take a good look at them winds up giving you a kind of critical distance from them. Their grip on you loosens; if it loosens enough, they’re no longer a part of you. (p. 135)
***
This is the version of the emptiness doctrine that makes sense to me, and it’s the version most widely accepted by Buddhist scholars: not the absence of everything, but the absence of essence. To perceive emptiness is to perceive raw sensory data without doing what we’re naturally inclined to do: build a theory about what is at the heart of the data and then encapsulate that theory in a sense of essence. (p. 148)
***
. . . . Let’s look at the two key claims Rodney Smith is making: (1) The apprehension of formlessness or emptiness is a truer perception of things than our ordinary view, and (2) the feelings we normally experience in reaction to these things aren’t appropriate in light of the truth about them. These claims are consistent with what I’m saying. Rodney and I are just disagreeing over the mechanics of insight. He says—and  here he reflects the orthodox position within Buddhism—that the clarity of vision leads to the dampening of feelings. I say that the dampening of feelings leads to the clarity of vision. Indeed, I’d almost go so far as to say the dampening of feelings is the clarity of vision, so finely is affect intertwined with perception—in particular, with the perception of essence. (p. 165)
***
The human brain is a machine designed by natural selection to respond in pretty reflexive fashion to the sensory input impinging on it. It is designed, in a certain sense, to be controlled by that input. And a key cog in the machinery of control is the feelings that arise in response to the input. If you interact with those feelings via tanha—via the natural, reflexive thirst for the pleasant feelings and the natural, reflexive aversion to the unpleasant feelings—you will continue to be controlled by the world around you. But if you observe those feelings mindfully rather than just reacting to them, you can in some measure escape the control; the causes that ordinarily shape your behavior can be defied, and you can get closer to the unconditioned. (pp. 219-20)
***
So what “not making judgments” ultimately means is not letting your feelings make judgments for you. And what “getting in touch with your feelings” ultimately means is not being so oblivious to them that you get pushed around by them. And all of this means informing your responses to the world with the clearest possible view of the world. (p. 223)

Wednesday’s workout
Push:
a1 bench press 4x6
a2 glute ham raise 4x4-6
b1 weighted decline sit up 3x8
b2 skullcrusher 3x12
c1 Bulgarian split squat 3x8/8
c2 barbell push press 3x8
d: ending with shoulder accessory work. hitting the front, mid and rear delt specifically & tricep & DB bench press. if i can i’d also like to end with some push-squat movements like the leg press, goblet squat or front squat. but not so taxing i cant do my posterior chain work tomorrow.
Yesterday’s workout D E M O L I S H E D my back. I took some creative liberty and improvised some to accommodate the other bodies in the gym and available equipment. I knew I really wanted to hit the back to begin with, so I worked every which way to hit every single muscle I could think of. It took me over an hour. I normally try to keep my workouts 45-50 minutes. I was the only woman on the lifting floor. I knew there aren't too many women who lift at my gym. Maybe only a handful. There is one older woman in particular I see from time to time and she’s really fit. She must be in her 40s-50s or older... but I have a hard time estimating her age because she’s so fit. Yesterday I was in a sea of sausage. There were like four or five younger guys probably 18-21s. And one huge guy that came in and powerlifted some massive weight and left. It felt good to feel like I was working harder than most of those dudes there. I keep track of my time, heart rate and resting periods on my watch and I definitely saw those guys enter and exit and I was still working. I thought I'd be dead by the time I was done but I finished with just 10 minutes of sprints. I was wondering if something was wrong because the man next to me lightly jogging looked over 3 times at me. Maybe it was because I was breathing really hard and running  a full on sprint so hard the treadmill was probably shaking. I added on a pallof press too and it felt really awesome on my core.
I did some research on the posterior chain. It’s not actually an anatomical system. What it is, is a term coined to describe 2 muscle systems that run along the backside of the body from your head to your ankles. Two different systems that are used for the same function, but trained in completely different ways.
The first one being the Superficial Back Line which includes the muscles from the traps, mid back line and hamstrings and calves- all the muscles used to keep you upright. (main lift being the deadlift) (consists mostly of the erector spinae and the hamstrings)  (aka what allows you to lift your head & support the spine) (postural muscles, very aerobic, slow, steady, static movements). If you only focus on movements for the Superficial Back Line, you’ll completely miss the second part of it.
The second one being the Posterior Oblique Sling which is a band of muscles that includes the entire lats, the sheet of muscles along the back that help draw the arm back, the glutes, and the outter thigh. These are worked using rotational exercises and used to keep you more mobile. It’s more of an active function, rather than static- helping us walk and run and combining work from the glutes and lats at the same time (think: running motion- lat pulling an arm back while glute is moving the leg forward) ***ITS BALANCE BITCH**
This reminds me so much of why I would combine an exercise like a seated row (mid back line) with a wide lat pull down (posterior oblique sling- it literally shapes around your back and sides like a sling, forming the lats, muscles that stretch around the to form the glutes and outter hamstring/thigh- it reminds me of forming the coveted X pattern people look for)
I think I'll change up some things about my December training program. I’d like to add in a Sumo Deadlift simply because I can use it to hit those muscle planes I was talking about, a little better. I might add in a bent over dumbbell row, as well. I feel my current programming right now may be leaving some vital parts out of the equation. For example, I'm not doing a lot to hit the Posterior Oblique Sling above the waist. The only things I have in my programming are inverted rows and pull ups. AND I'm doing a ton to hit it below the waist. Lots of work with hip thrusts, pause squats etc. I want to make especially sure I'm not neglecting and creating imbalances as I go. I’d also like to hit rear delts a little more effectively. For the Superficial Back Line, I'm hitting hamstrings well but not doing much for the mid back supported muscles. I do back extensions a couple times a week for it, but I'd like to add something else on for it. My superficial back line doesn't need as much adjustment as the posterior oblique sling. Yesterday I corrected a lotttt of this.
I still plan on getting my workouts in like normal even on holidays like thanksgiving. Thanksgiving day workout is “Posterior Chain” focused, as they say. But really just focused on the glutes, latissimus dorsi, and hammies (bc the sumo squat pulls strength from more of the hams, glutes, inner thigh etc), and spinal erectors of the low back and coreeeeee
a1. reverse front lunge 4x6/6 (all heavy sets @ RPE 8)
a2. explosive pull thru 6x2
b1. chest supported rows 5x8
c1. barbell hip thrust 4x5
c2. adding a sumo deadlift here 4x5
core: plank & hold complex
core: hanging knee/leg raises to failure
It’s really crazy how much information is out there and how much is incomplete or misinterpreted. But, I love adjusting my own work programming as I go.

Ooh 😮, my butt is itchy 😣. What a surprise. A jolt of wake up today was hugging 🤗 Sparky sitting down to cuddle only to wet your satin boxer pajamas on his puddle of urine. What the hell. Why is he acting up? There are three litters. My Dad always scare me that Sparkicus is going to pee on my stuff on the couch 🛋. My gawd, it is very likely. I need to shower 🚿. I was going to this morning ☀️ had I successfully get myself to the gym 🏃🏼‍♀️ 💪🏾 . I have not washed myself, I rinsed 🧼, since Wednesday. I can smell 👃🏾 my armpits. Ewww, it has this strong rancid bacterial 🦠 🧫 putrid odor. I am starved 😋 and I need some Americano. Shall I drink two cups today which makes four shots ☕️? Sure thang. I made a quick incomplete mental 🤔 math 🔣🔢. I drink caffeine like I am a baby 🍼 👶🏻 at the NICU needing the IV push 💉. I slept 🛏 late. Six hours wasn’t enough. I got up on my alarm feeling tired 😓. I have this idea 💡 that perhaps I can nap 💤 without care by the pool 🏊🏻‍♀️ side. What I am forgetting is that I need proper rest to perform on the floor 💪🏾 🦵🏾morning. I wasn’t sleepy 💤. I didn’t feel recharged 🔌. I spent the first waking periods planning with my phone 📱. That is why I say it is a tool 🧰🔧🔩⚙️. I love 💕 the Internet 🌐 along with it’s new ills. Like, I already figure out 💭 ✍🏾 that I am going to knock myself out on shoes 👟. My gawd. I have this thing about restraint, following your impulse, getting what’s the best price tag 🏷, getting what you want and for the heck of it. There you go psychoanalysis of me revealed. For the most part it’s all business plushy needs. Ugh 😑, Sparta 🛡⚔️. I’m not going to show you my retail basket 🛒. But I am going to present the dailies that I picked out. I want to ask my eye 👁 doctor 🥼 if I can try them all out even if I am more leaning towards the least costlier brand. I had a good day yesterday. It was a great time to refresh my spirits 😍. Esp if your body physically and mentally 😩😰 is stress worn by the kind of life you live, that breather, I am guilt as charge I am more how much can we cramp to get there, you help yourself to being more effective, productive and happy 😃. If you are not fan of the word balance because it is used so much, scientifically if you look 👀 at homeostasis 📈📉 or the capacity of systems , you find that piece of fact without a doubt will cause a problem if not followed. Yeah, I love 💕 the empirical inquiry. I am of the belief that developing body of knowledge 📜 no matter in what area is progress and foundation for further advancement of the human capacities 🤩. I had my photoart vision 📸 yesterday. I took pictures in the kitchen of moments. I ate 😋 although I didn’t have my entire breakfast 🥞. I helped myself to a large helping via estimation dinner 🍽 . It only occurred to me that I prep a large plate when my stomach said and my brain 🧠 agrees, I cannot eat anymore. I stored them and I am like, “Heck, I ate half of it and this is a lunch 🥙. I really need to measure 📏 like Laura insists. Sometimes when you are in a hurry you just have to make a visual approximation. I need to give myself measuring tools like the scale I want. Those are properly calibrated. In that regard, I know for sure that I am eating 6 ounces of protein 🍖 🐟 🍗. Laura was also in communication 📞 with me yesterday. She wanted to redo my metabolic assessment. I am so happy 😀 it all worked out for her. I gave her the agreement to doing one of my tests. This retest is an opportunity to test her skills and to finally hear 👂🏾 a second opinion for the exorbitant earlier numbers. The gym is a stressful place. I am a consummate college student 👩🏼‍🎓 what is stress? Adulting, I have resigned to the fact that I have my limitations and live off my parents hard earned money 💵. Physically, I have cut back on the amount of work I spent on the exercise equipments. However, Stacy, another trainer gave me that what I call golden nugget, the answer 🧐, the explanation I needed, the game changer. My weight has no changed and that’s ok as long as my shape improves and other fitness parameters too. She said your bod gets used to your routine 〰️. As Laura had said, therefore, “You have to shock it.” Aha moment 💭. I don’t need to stay longer in the treadmill. I just need to amp up my intensity levels 〽️. You mean I have to be out of my leisure comfort zone 😒. Yeah, I am working on my upper thighs. I send this to her yesterday. She’s off today.

How to like exercises?
Tumblr media
How do people regularly go to the gym? Are they so motivated or do they have such a great will? Believe me, and you, too, can make sports a habit-find out 10 ways to start regular workouts and enjoy them.
The right attitude to sports instills us from childhood, however, over time, the desire to go to the gym or just go jogging is replaced by other important things – work, study, family, rest after a busy day. And even if deep down you understand that it is necessary to go to the hall, it is unlikely that you will hold out for a long time on one will and overcome your own reluctance to engage. The pleasure of training is an integral and obligatory part of it. A good mood will allow you to achieve more effective results, because your body will not waste energy to produce cortisol-the stress hormone-and will focus on what is really useful, such as burning fat or building muscles.
A logical question arises "" How to force yourself to train?». If you really want to make sports a habit, then first of all, throw the word "force" into your own lexicon. It is fraught with negative emotions, and the very process of course through "I do not want" and "I can not" is akin to violence on myself. Secondly, find the unusual advantages of sports. Something that is different from the banal "burns calories", etc. here is an incomplete list of how sports affects the human body and psyche:
Sports improve the functioning of the brain, especially for strength exercises, where it is very important to create a connection between the mind and muscles and consciously strain the musculature; sport is one of the most popular ways to combat depression, it immediately goes to reading; outdoor activities allow you to discover new things and generate original ideas; going to the gym will help you get to know more people, make new friends and expand your horizons; many exercises develop not only strength, but also coordination, agility, the ability to concentrate.
If, even after these benefits of sports, you still can not imagine yourself going to the gym or fitness center with a smile on your face and joyful anticipation, now we will talk about five methods of work that will help you love sports.
The main reason for our reluctance lies not in character, natural laziness and fatigue. The brain is responsible for any human decision. If you regularly feel a loss of strength and mood before exercise, your consciousness is simply programmed to provide a state of rest.
Before trying to overcome yourself, determine whether you get enough sleep, because a deep and full sleep is the main feature of a healthy person. Adjust your own diet: follow what you eat, in what quantities, find out if your diet contains enough vitamins. You do not want to think about it so much – just buy a vitamin complex in a pharmacy, such drugs did not hurt anyone. And try to reprogram your brain into workouts. Method 1. Focus on speed
If we remember our ancestors, they led a very active life. It was necessary to hunt and search for food. In short, sport was their method of survival and the main advantages of the individual were speed and agility. Of course, exercises with free weight are necessary, and you will have to go to the Hall. But such a load can be used on days when there is absolutely no desire to go to pull the bar as an alternative in terms of efficiency. Method 2. Find an unusual motivation
For men, the best original motivation will be sex. Establish a rule in your couple at least a week to have sex only on training days, and you will not notice with what happiness and enviable regularity you visit the gym. It sounds a little strange, but you can not go against the physiological needs of the body and the constant targeting of the pursuit of gender.
Also, the original means of motivation can be the purchase (but not sweets as a reward). It is more characteristic of women. Develop the habit of setting aside a certain amount every time you visit a fitness center, and the goal will be to "accumulate 2000 rubles a month", for example. And when you reach yours, be sure to buy something that will certainly please you. Method 3. A deadly threat
Do you accept that running away from an angry dog is always faster and easier than maintaining the same pace on a treadmill? It is about the protective reactions of the body – it is programmed to survive in any conditions. However, our brain can not distinguish real and invented threats. This is what you need to use. Convince yourself that someone is chasing you – and you will improve your performance on the treadmill. Another option is to engage in a couple, when the life of a partner or friend depends on the number of your loads. Continue to assure the brain that if you lower the kettlebell earlier, there will be no trace of the person. After one or two approaches in this style, the brain will enter the game and your indicators will increase. And this method in any case will make you smile with a friend, and the mood will improve. Method 4. Competition
For many people, Competition is the main engine of their own progress. If you are one of them, hiking in the hall should not be a problem, because rivals are at least enough. Try to engage in small groups of strangers, because in such a society the fear of being the weakest increases, to make a bad impression and a small number of people is a great way to notice the characteristics of each. In large groups, it is easy to move from the thought of competition to the idea that "there are a lot of people, no one will notice that I have not done a few repetitions yet." Method 5. Correctly use eating habits
When we want a charge of vivacity and energy, we drink coffee or eat sweets. Since childhood, we are taught that any candy is a kind of reward, and therefore in adulthood, the brain always perceives high-calorie foods with sugar as a source of pleasure. This effect is difficult to overcome during the diet, many fight with it. But it can be used for its own purposes. The body already knows that sweet taste means fast carbohydrates. When you feel a loss of strength, rinse your mouth with an energy drink, but do not swallow it, because there are not enough benefits. Even if the liquid has not got into your body, the taste buds have already informed the brain about the rapid delivery of energy, and it is again ready to work hard in a deceived state. Method 6. Be proud of yourself
Pride, or rather the desire not to lose the cause of pride, is another engine of personal growth. Think of yourself as a person who accomplishes the feat every time she goes to the gym. Let everything around remind you how good you are and what you aspire to: sports equipment at home in a prominent place, sneakers in the hallway, screensaver on your phone, where a close-up – a muscular athlete or a slender girl. You can also hang inspirational quotes. Or try to memorize them. Method 7. Praise your achievements
The more people know how hard and hard you work in the gym, the more you will have to do to maintain such an image. And you will begin to regularly attend various trainings. It is more useful to brag on social networks, because the audience in them is wider, and from time to time to take out your friends for joint training, in order to actually prove to them and to themselves that your words and messages on Instagram are not fiction, but reality. Method 8. Impose penalties
For each missed workout, pay a fine, for example, in 500 rubles. The idea is not even that you lose money, but that you feel punished. Our brain reacts to this and decides that it would be better to go to the room. Do not put aside the money, but spend it, not for yourself, but for others. Loved ones will be happy, and you will remember that you could buy something with the same success if you did not miss the training.
How to like exercises?
There is another option: the Pact mobile app, which debits money from your account every time you break the established schedule. The funds are distributed among those who did not make such a mistake. Even you can earn money if you are not lazy!

The Trapped Class, the Treadmill Class, and the Freedom Class
The way we think about economic class in America doesn’t make any sense.
In the past, there was the “poor,” the “middle class,” and the “rich.”
But there’s just one problem:
EVERYONE THINKS THEY’RE MIDDLE CLASS!
Look at this comment from an investment forum:
“We’re 62 and 59, Semi-Retired…at around $4.5M… (Note: We most definitely don’t consider ourselves wealthy, but just moderately affluent, and we still live the same as we did when we had $10K)…”
Allow me to translate: “We have 4.5 MILLION FUCKING DOLLARS but we ‘definitely’ don’t consider ourselves wealthy.”
I know, I know. “Ramit! That sounds like a lot of money…but when you live in San Francisco with 2 kids, and private scho—” Ugh, you already know the rest of this. I’m not even going to get into Mr. and Mrs. 4.5M Who Think They’re Middle Class.
Then you have the opposite side. My friend gave a eulogy for one of his relatives, who grew up poor (“I’m talking we-moved-13-times-as-kids poor”). Within hours, he was getting Facebook messages from his family, criticizing him for calling them poor. “We weren’t poor. Our neighbors — they were poor.”
Do you see how ridiculous this is? A multimillionaire couple refuses to believe they’re rich…and a family who had their electricity repeatedly shut off refuses to believe they’re poor.
IWT Philosophy on Economic Class
In America, the almighty dollar rules, but don’t you dare talk about class.
Buy a Tesla, walk around with your LV bag, renovate your kitchen, take lots of vacations…and post it on Instagram, please. But don’t ever say you’re rich. You’re just “moderately affluent.”
I see it myself. I get lots of people who teasingly ask me, “So are YOU rich?” Even though I’ve spent 15+ years talking about how money is just one part of a Rich Life, most people wink and nod and smile, like deep down they know I’m just playing a trick and they’re in on it.
“Yeah yeah, I know…life isn’t just about money. [Now that we got that out of the way…] So are you rich?”
Once, just to see what would happen, I replied, “Yes.” No caveats, no clarification, just yes.
Try to imagine the pin drop silence you’d hear in outer space. That was their response — an awkward, stunned silence. They were completely unsure how to respond. Would you? Have you ever heard someone openly acknowledge they were rich?
Not in this country. Because we worship the almighty dollar, but you can’t talk about it.
I now soften my answer to say, “Well, I was rich before I had money and I live a Rich Life now.”
A Rich Life is about more than money. Especially when everyone lies about it.
A Rich Life is about FREEDOM and FLEXIBILITY. You can be rich on $50K/year if you’ve created a life where you can do the things you love — whether it’s traveling, eating sushi every week, or teaching drawing. You can also live that Rich Life on $500,000 or $5 million. And of course, more money makes it easier.
You can also have a lot of money and be drowning. For example, over the weekend, I had coffee with a friend who used to work in investment banking. He and his coworkers would get together and compare notes about their boss, who’d randomly share tiny bits of his life. One person overheard him talking about his lake house. Another heard him say his 3 kids go to private school.
For a bunch of young bankers stuck at the office for 14+ hours/day, they built a model incorporating all the “clues” they heard from his expenses. At a certain point, they looked at each other and realized that this guy — who was making $2.5 million/year — might actually be LOSING money.
That’s why I think we need a new framework to use.
A new framework for class in America
The old framework — poor, middle class, and rich — is reductive. It’s incomplete.
How many of us know someone who’s technically rich…but when they factor in the costs of housing, student loan debt, day care, and basic expenses, they don’t “feel” rich? You can have someone making $500K who feels trapped (or our banker friend who obviously is living beyond his means)…but someone making $40K who feels free.
That’s why a new framework should focus less on net worth and more on lifestyle, which you can intentionally design for yourself.
(Note: These classes don’t justify massive inequality and systemic problems, which are genuine problems. They simply provide a “lens” through which to view your financial state.)
Read below and see if you can spot yourself.
1. The “Trapped” Class
In The Trapped Class, you’re stuck working paycheck to paycheck, one accident away from financial disaster. There is no “buffer,” no time to think ahead and plan for the long term.
Key phrases used by people in The Trapped Class:
“I’ll never be able to afford that” “Once I do XYZ, I’ll be rich” “I need money now so I can buy XYZ” “I’ll be working for the rest of my life, so I might as well buy X” “Don’t raise my taxes!!!” “Things will never change” “It just doesn’t matter what I do” “That’s not for people like you and me” “Money is the root of all evil” Remember, you can be trapped at $30,000/year or $300,000/year depending on your lifestyle!
If you’re living in The Trapped Class, you have very few options and fewer resources or free time to improve your situation. This is a scary place to be and a very hard cycle to break out of.
2. The “Treadmill” Class
People on the treadmill have a decent job and a small bit of savings. If you live in America, the treadmill is a relatively good quality of life — The Treadmill Class has a roof, a car, internet, pizza delivery any time they want, and they can take a vacation once a year.
But they’re stuck — and getting off the treadmill is more of a dream, not a plan. They usually have some credit card debt. They aren’t saving enough for retirement. They’re likely to spend most of their lives working their job just to stay afloat.
Key phrases used by people in The Treadmill Class:
“If I just keep going, one day I’ll be able to do that…one day I’ll be able to afford that…one day I’ll be happy” “I’ve got some $ saved but I’ll never be rich enough to actually quit my job to do what I want” “That’s for rich people” “I wish I could do X, but I need to keep saving money in case I lose my job” “I really want X but I can’t afford it right now” “Don’t raise my taxes!!” “I feel stuck” “Everyone thinks I should be happy making this much…but they don’t understand my expenses” “My job pays the bills” “I work hard. I deserve this” I remember my first time in NYC as an adult, when I met a friend for lunch near Grand Central. I loved seeing all the people casually eating $30 salads in their beautiful suits — it was like I was sitting in a glamorous TV show. Only later did I understand that the fancy suit and salad belied the 2-hour commute, the multiple mortgages, the $50,000+/year private school tuition (per kid), and the thankless jobs with a capricious boss.
Day to day, the treadmill can be “fine,” even nice. But 30+ years of running will drain you.
3. The “Freedom” Class
These are the people who have the ability to do what they want, when they want. Money is no longer a major constraint in their lives. In fact, cost is rarely the first thing they consider. More often, it’s time, quality, experience, relationships, or simply “I want it.”
I’m not just talking about billionaires and trust fund babies, even though they get all the spotlight. There’s actually a growing wave of people who are living this life by building small, automated businesses that support their lives.
The key insight here: It’s not simply about how much money you have. It’s how much FLEXIBILITY and FREEDOM you have.
Key phrases used by people in The Freedom Class:
“My money works for me. I don’t work for it” “So what if I pay a little more? It makes my life easier” “I can afford to be generous” “I can afford to make investments for the future” “I want something created especially for me, not cookie-cutter for everyone else” “I work hard and I want the best” “Yes, I can do that” “I trust the people around me” “If I invest now, think how much I’ll gain later” “My business operates without me day to day”
We almost always fixate on the money required to be in The Freedom Class. Sure, more money helps. But I recently spoke to a retired couple and asked them, “What would you tell yourselves back in your 20s?” They looked at each other and said, “Save more.” I pressed them: “Why? You’re retired and you have good money now. What would you have used the extra money for?”
They just stared at me. They had no answer. In America, we believe that “more” is the answer — but in reality, you can reach The Freedom Class by creating a life of flexibility and purpose.

Which one of these classes do you fit into? What are your thoughts on my framework?
