This blog really made me rethink my approach towards my culture and how whitewashed people around me really are. It made me try indian sweets from different states and not being ashamed to speak hindi in situations where the people around me prefer to stick to English to be more professional. However, this acceptance and realisation has in itself been a journey because i used to be a very non desi person with an inclination towards western things and culture because i was conditioned to believe that it is cooler than indian things. In highschool I realised that it is okay to have different interests and when i got the freedom to purchase things for leisure independently I naturally chose desi items . From their it started feeling like an aesthetic that i was choosing for myself. Now i have come to the realisation that it was still superficial. It was an acceptance of the aesthetic not of the entire culture. It helped me find out who i am and think independently, but i did not grasp it entirely. I understand it and like it , but I’m not it . Living in a house where they keep making things Minimalistic and western and progressive I realise that if we need everyone to be more involved in desi lifestyle and art, we should start treating it as a natural part of our everyday lives. Why do we need plain toothbrushes with a modern design yet no indian element . I understand the need for minimalism and that Indian art and culture has always been the opposite. But what if we take elements of it and use it in modern design. Most importantly, manufacture and design all this in india. Globalisation has lead to people having a disregard of their culture. Globalisation is being modern these days. I see so many people wearing korean outfits nowadays. While it is alright to express yourself using fashion as a medium I hold the belief that no one can ever be completely happy wearing or using anything that doesnt have a hint of their culture and roots. Girls are happy wearing kurtis with jeans. They will prefer that over a tshirt and jeans. An outfit that doesn’t have an indian element will always make me feel like I am missing something. It might be fine for a day , but I can’t have that aesthetic around me forever. I love how architecture and interior magazines of india have modern architecture infused with desi elements . It could be jaaliwork instead of western windows. Indian Woodwork instead of fluted panels. Wallpaper with indian motif prints , or just simple sculptures with some indian element. What’s a home without a hint of your roots.

Rachel Paula Abrahamson at NBC News:
Openly gay actor Maulik Pancholy was disinvited from speaking at a middle school anti-bullying assembly after concerns were raised about his political activism and what two school board members called his “lifestyle.” Pancholy’s scheduled appearance at Mountain View Middle School in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, was unanimously overturned by the district’s school board in a public meeting on April 15.  “If you research this individual, he labels himself as an activist, he is proud of his lifestyle and I don’t think that should be imposed upon our students at any age,” board member Bud Shaffner said at the meeting.  Trisha Comstock, a former parent at the school, started a Change.org petition to reinstate the empathy and anti-bullying assembly. “What happened is homophobic. Anyone can go and watch the meeting,” Comstack tells TODAY.com. “This board is close to causing some real harm.”
Why was Maulik Pancholy disinvited?
Board member Kelly Potteiger raised concerns that Pancholy, 50, would discuss his children’s book “The Best at It,” which is about a gay Indian American boy. “It’s not discriminating against his lifestyle — that’s his choice,” Potteiger said in the meeting. “But it’s him speaking about it.” Pancholy played the character Jonathan, Alex Baldwin’s devoted assistant, in the sitcom “30 Rock,” and also voiced the character Baljeet in “Phineas and Ferb.” Pancholy’s presentation on anti-bullying at Mountain View Middle School was canceled by an 8-0 vote. TODAY.com has reached out to Pancholy for comment. Brooke Ryerson, an LGBTQ high school sophomore, attended Mountain View Middle School. Ryerson and her mom plan to express their disappointment at the next board meeting on May 6.
“It was going to be an assembly about empathy and anti-bullying,” Ryerson, 16, tells TODAY.com. “But that doesn’t matter to the board. They want to silence us in any way they can.” The “us” that Ryerson is referring to is the gay community.  “They’re sending that message that they don’t want our identities in the school,” Ryerson says. “I’m lucky that I have such accepting friends and family, but it’s gotta be devastating for the kids who don’t and now feel even more like they’re not wanted somewhere.”
The cowardly Cumberland Valley School District school board in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania voted to cancel gay 30 Rock actor Maulik Pancholy's appearance at a middle school anti-bullying assembly, with 2 of its board members using the homophobic "lifestyle" canard to justify canceling Pancholy's address to middle schoolers.

The Enduring Elegance of Embroidered Kurti Sets with Sharara and Dupatta
The embroidered kurti with sharara and dupatta is a timeless Indian outfit that continues to be a popular choice for women of all ages. This classic combination offers a unique blend of elegance, comfort, and style, making it perfect for various occasions, from festive celebrations to casual gatherings.
**A Look at the Trend**
The current trend leans towards kurtis with intricate embroidery designs. While traditional motifs like paisley and floral patterns remain favorites, geometric and abstract designs are gaining traction. Embroidery techniques like chikankari, zardozi, and phulkari are particularly sought-after, adding a touch of luxury and sophistication to the outfit.
**Kurti Magic**
The kurti itself can come in a variety of lengths and styles. Shorter kurtis with a cropped or high-low hem are perfect for a breezy summer look, while longer kurtas offer a more formal silhouette. For a contemporary touch, asymmetrical cuts and off-the-shoulder designs are making waves.
**Sharara Style**
Sharara pants, the quintessential complement to the embroidered kurti, are experiencing a revival. These pants feature a wider leg from the knee down, creating a flattering and graceful drape. While classic shararas with intricate detailing are still in vogue, simpler, flowy styles are gaining popularity for their effortless elegance.
Dupatta Delights
The dupatta, the long scarf that completes the ensemble, offers endless possibilities for self-expression. Sheer dupattas with heavy embroidery add a touch of grandeur, while lighter fabrics with delicate work provide a more understated look. Experimenting with draping styles, from the classic over-the-shoulder to the more contemporary pleated pallu, allows for further personalization.
Embroidered Elegance *The beauty of the embroidered kurti with sharara and dupatta lies in its versatility. This ensemble can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. With the right choice of fabrics, colors, and embellishments, it can be adapted to suit any personal style. So, whether you're looking for a show-stopping outfit for a wedding or a comfortable yet stylish ensemble for a day out, the embroidered kurti set with sharara and dupatta is a timeless trend that offers something for everyone.

From classic denim jeans to elegant dresses and chic blouses, western attire embodies a sense of freedom, individuality, and style. In this comprehensive guide, we delve into the diverse world of western fashion, exploring its evolution, key elements, popular trends, and styling tips.
The Evolution of Western Fashion: Western fashion traces its roots back to the American frontier and the rugged landscapes of the Wild West. The iconic cowboy attire, characterized by denim jeans, plaid shirts, and leather boots, became synonymous with the spirit of adventure and exploration. Over the years, western fashion evolved from practical workwear to a symbol of rebellion, counterculture, and self-expression.
Key Elements of Western Dressing:
Denim: Denim jeans are the cornerstone of western fashion, offering durability, versatility, and timeless style. From classic blue jeans to distressed denim and high-waisted styles, denim remains a wardrobe essential for both men and women.
Plaid: Plaid shirts are another iconic element of western dressing, featuring bold checkered patterns and rustic charm. Paired with denim jeans or skirts, plaid shirts add a touch of casual elegance to any outfit, making them a staple in western fashion.
Leather: Leather boots, belts, and jackets are quintessential accessories in western fashion, exuding rugged sophistication and timeless appeal. Whether embellished with fringe details or adorned with metal hardware, leather accents add a touch of authenticity to western attire.
Cowboy Hats: Cowboy hats are iconic symbols of western fashion, with their wide brims and distinctive shapes evoking images of the American frontier. From traditional felt hats to straw cowboy hats, these accessories add a touch of cowboy flair to any outfit.
Popular Trends in Western Fashion:
Indo-Western Fusion: Indo-western outfits blend traditional Indian elements with western silhouettes, creating a unique fusion of cultures and styles. From embellished kurtas paired with denim jeans to sarees worn with western blouses, indo-western dressing celebrates the diversity of global fashion.
Bohemian Chic: Bohemian fashion draws inspiration from the free-spirited lifestyle of the 1960s and 1970s, featuring flowing silhouettes, floral prints, and eclectic accessories. Maxi dresses, fringe vests, and embroidered blouses are key elements of bohemian chic style, embodying a sense of wanderlust and adventure.
Modern Western Glamour: Modern western fashion embraces glamour and sophistication, with sleek silhouettes, luxe fabrics, and polished accessories. Tailored blazers, satin dresses, and statement jewelry elevate classic western attire to new heights of elegance and allure.
Styling Tips for Western Attire:
Mix and Match: Experiment with different combinations of western and traditional elements to create unique and personalized looks. Pair denim jeans with embroidered kurtas or style a plaid shirt with a leather skirt for a fresh take on western dressing.
Accessorize Thoughtfully: Choose accessories that complement your western attire and add interest to your outfit. Opt for leather belts, cowboy boots, and statement jewelry to complete your look with flair.
Play with Textures: Incorporate a variety of textures into your western outfits to add depth and visual interest. Mix denim with suede, leather with lace, and cotton with chiffon for a dynamic and textured ensemble.
Embrace Versatility: Invest in versatile pieces that can be dressed up or down for any occasion. A denim jacket, white button-down shirt, or little black dress are timeless staples that can be styled in countless ways to suit your personal style.
Conclusion: Western fashion is a celebration of freedom, individuality, and creativity, with its iconic denim jeans, plaid shirts, and leather accents. Nostalgia- (1960s- 1970s)
Nostalgia has always been my friend. When no one was around, the feeling of nostalgia was a company. Even though I did not have the privilege of being born during the golden period, 1960s and 1970s, I don’t know what it’s to be like living in that era, yet a bittersweet nostalgia engulfs me when I think about it.
The allure of Rajesh Khanna movies, the purity of old-fashioned romance, and the timeless classics by Kishore Kumar all carry a sense of comfort and warmth.
There is a deep, emotional connection to something I’ve never witnessed, people I’ve never met, lifestyle I’ve never come close to and feelings of simplicity I don’t think I’ll ever experience.
The elegance of a cotton saree, the richness of authentic Indian culture and the modest way of life—they transport me to days gone by. I yearn for the time when people found solace in reading dusty brown books lining in cracked shelves.
Above all, i miss the significance of letters. The lost art of pouring out emotions on a piece of paper when it becomes difficult to express yourself into spoken words.
When innocent gazes from right across the street could lead to people sending love letters and igniting a lifelong love…
When lifestyle was humble, cherishing valuable moments with family was appreciated and people melted their day’s exhaustion over a cup of chai and good company.
And When people lied at home and sneaked out to watch Shammi Kapoor’s latest hits.
From Trams, rickshaws, telephones to vintage cassettes on the radio, I find myself obsessing over the simplest of the retro things.
I cannot put into words how I feel when I stumble upon a 1970s cassette set or when I come across pictures clicked in 1963.
It leads me to contemplate my hypothetical existence as what my life would’ve been like if I was present in that moment. Would I have chosen a path as a teacher? Or a skilled weaver?
Perhaps, my role would have involved fostering a sense of community by hosting the neighborhood children for a cup of chai and some namkeen. My heart feels full and my eyes become blurry when I think about “what could’ve been” , “how would it feel” , “when could’ve been better” .
These feelings and thoughts occupy my mind and leave me thinking some parts of me belong to an era which has no clue about my existence.
I feel a disconnection from my own generation as if I am displaced from my people, not being able to resonate with any of them.
When the present fails to provide any of those sentiments that I ache for, I find myself engaged in the past, seeking nostalgic experiences. It is fascinating how an era we never personally encountered can have such a deep and emotional impact on our lives, resonating with us in so many ways, leaving an indelible mark on our lives.
This bittersweet feeling makes me want to wear a Banarasi silk saree and lie down on a hammock, listening to Lata Mangeshkar Ji’s “Ehsan Tera Hoga Mujhpar” .

Will Minako tell the boys about the culture and language of the Philippines? Anyone dare to insult Filipino culture?
Not going to answer the second question because I find it uncomfortable to answer.
But yes, Minako does like involving Japanese and Pinoy traditions and into her lifestyle. She often expresses her heritage in food or holidays. Filipino culture is such a phenomenon to me because although we’re Asian, the Spanish influences on our country are quite heavy.
When it comes to languages, Minako is more fluent in Tagalog than Japanese. She also swears a lot in Tagalog, a habit that she got from her mother who was a bit of a sailor mouth.
We have this tradition called “Kamayan,” which means to eat with our hands. That might appeal to some of the boys at the prospect of not having to wash a lot of dishes since there is no cutlery involved and the food is plated on banana leaves that you can just throw away. Some don’t like it because they prefer having their hands clean while eating.
To celebrate Christmas (or in Twisted Wonderland’s case, Winter Holiday), people would find Minako making traditional Filipino Christmas star decorations that we call parol. Malleus even helped put lights in the stars. The glowing stars hanging on the windows makes the dorm look enchanting at night.
Filipinos also tend to celebrate Christmas for months, and I mean MONTHS!!! We start celebrating from September, and we’re usually not done until February. Minako doesn’t really do that though. She loves Christmas, but she and her family are among the people who are annoyed that Christmas music is already playing on the radio as soon as November hits.
Parties! For someone who leans more into introversion, Minako’s great at throwing parties or just hosting in general. She caters the best food and the pabitin game (rack of goodies, our own kind of pinata) is always fun on her birthday.
Filipino dramas may not have the same level of insanity as Spanish or Indian soap operas, but they have their moments. We even have our own Pinoy version of the famous Spanish telenovela, María la del Barrio. You know, the soap opera that gave us this iconic scene.
Vil gets introduced into ABS-CBN soap operas. He’s caught in between hating how cheesy and over-the-top the performance of the actors are but also secretly liking it. He catches on pretty quickly that the moment a character speaks English during an argument, it’s SERIOUS. Meanwhile, Lilia is eating up his popcorn when a physical fight breaks out between the bida (the heroine) and the contrabida (the villainess). He lives for the screaming, hair-pulling, and slapping after someone’s been cheating on his wife. Anyone getting pushed down the stairs has him at the edge of the seat no matter how many times he’s seen that cliché.
Augh, the cgi of the fantasy soap operas makes Idia cringe. It’s so low-quality. Too bad though because Minako decided to show him one of the many adaptations of Mars Ravelo’s Dyesebel.
This one Pinoy show, Kara Mia, while I’ve never watched it myself, seeing the preview terrified me to an uncomfortable degree because of the two faces sharing a single body. They try to paint it as a cute friendship between the two faces, but everyone who has laid witness to the show were green at the gills.
Ah, I think that’s all I have for now. I’m out of brain juice.

Emily Carr was born in Victoria, British Columbia in 1871. Her inclination to art was duly encouraged by her father, Richard Carr, a wholesale merchant. After the death of both her parents in 1890, she started to pursue art seriously, and studied at the San Francisco Art Institute for two years. At the age of 26, Carr visited a small village near Ucluelet located on the western coast of the Vancouver Island. There she sketched the lives of the Nootka people, indigenous to the land. Her interest in the lifestyle of Indian people was promoted by her trip to Alaska, where she spent days sketching the daily activities of the villagers.
In 1899, Carr went to the UK to study at the Westminster School of Art in London. In England she befriended and worked with Julius Olsson and Algernon Talmage, artists of the St. Ives School. By the time she returned to Canada, Carr established herself as a professional artist. She worked as a teacher at the Ladies Art Club in Vancouver, where she was highly unpopular among the students due to her smoking habits and cursing, that eventually led her to resign from her job.
After her tryst with many Indian villages in the Queen Charlotte Islands and the Upper Skeena River, Carr once again went to Europe in 1910, to study at the Académie Colarossi in Paris. She also took private lessons from Harry Phelan Gibb who influenced her palette adding there more vibrant colors. She was also influenced by French Post-Impressionism and Fauvism, and, after returning back to Canada in 1912, she exhibited 70 oils and watercolors of her “french period”, showing those influences. However, her bold new style was not appreciated by Canadians.
During the next 15 years, Carr did not paint much. She run a boarding house, took a short-story writing course, and spent some time in San Francisco doing different jobs, like painting decorations for the St. Francis Hotel and drawing cartoons for Western Woman’s Weekly. In 1927 Carr attended an exhibition of West Coast Aboriginal art in National Gallery of Canada. There she met Lawren Harris and other members of the Group of Seven, the most recognized modern painters in Canada at that time. Their distinctively Canadian art impressed her greatly, and triggered the most prolific period of her creative career. Throughout the decade, she mastered the scenes from the daily lives, traditions and culture of the indigenous Americans. With Lawren Harris as her mentor, Carr began to paint bold, almost hallucinatory canvases with which many people identify her - paintings of Aboriginal totem poles set in deep forest locations or the sites of abandoned Indigenous villages.
After a year or two Carr left Aboriginal subjects to devote herself to nature themes. From 1928 on, critical recognition and exposure in exhibitions of more than regional significance, like the National Gallery of Canada and the American Federation of Artists in Washington, D.C., began to come her way. There was even the occasional sale, though never enough to improve her financial situation. In full mastery of her talents and with deepening vision, she continued to produce a great body of paintings freely expressive of the large rhythms of Western forests, driftwood-tossed beaches and expansive skies, like Indian Church (1929), Loggers’ Culls (1935), and Heart of the Forest (1935).
In 1937, Carr suffered her first heart attack, which marked the beginning of a decline in her health and a lessening of the energy required for painting. Artworks from her last decade, like Odds and Ends (1939), reveal her growing anxiety about the environmental impact of industry on British Columbia's landscape and on the lives of Indigenous people. Carr died in 1945 of a heart attack. More than half a century after her death, she has become a Canadian icon. Her long preoccupation with the Indigenous culture of the Canadian west coast coincided with the beginnings of a rising tide of awareness and confident self-identification on the part of Aboriginal people who had for some time been considered part of a moribund culture. In the same way, her passionate involvement with nature and its portrayal coincided with a growing popular awareness of environmental issues and an accompanying sense of loss associated with the disappearance of "nature" in our own day. And the fact that she was a woman fighting the overwhelming obstacles that faced women of her day to become an artist of stunning originality and strength has made her a favorite of the women's movement.

Here's my goals for 2023 this year and after deliberating for a month, here I go;-

Gond: Tribal Art of the Heart of India
Gond art is a traditional form of painting that originated in Madhya Pradesh, India. It is mainly practiced by the Gond tribe living in that state. However, it can also be found in other states like Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Maharashtra, and Chhattisgarh.
Tumblr media
The Gonds are the largest tribal community in India, and their art is highly valued for its cultural heritage. Gond paintings showcase the tribe's lifestyle, their surroundings, and the wildlife in their area. These paintings also depict their beliefs, mythical creatures, and characters from their folklore, all of which are an essential part of their artwork. The Gond tribe believes that having good pictures around them brings good luck and positive energy. Animals play a significant role in their art, as the tribe believes that all beings are spiritual and sacred.
Tumblr media
Gond paintings are filled with bright and lively colors like orange, yellow, blue, and red. They are created using carefully drawn lines and dots that bring the paintings to life. The artists use natural colors derived from sources like flowers, stones, and other materials to create these beautiful artworks.
The word “Gond” comes from the Dravidian expression kond, meaning “the green mountain.” The work of Gond artists is rooted in their folk tales and culture, and thus story-telling is a strong element of every painting.
Tumblr media
Gond art stems from the belief that a good image brings good fortune. This underlying belief has inspired the Gonds to decorate their homes and floors with traditional tattoos and motifs. Today, Gond art products such as Gond paintings on wood, painted wooden trays, and boxes have become extremely popular globally.
It is a matter of pleasure that Gond art has not escaped the eyes of art connoisseurs of the country. The Government of India is making efforts for the preservation of Gond painting. Other well-wishers went further and created Must Art Gallery – the world's first art gallery dedicated to Gond art. Unlike so many other treasures of Indian culture that have slipped through the cracks of time and are lost forever, the future of Gond art looks as vibrant and colourful as the paintings
