This is probably my last post on the whole “Liz is dead” situation but I want to talk about my great grandmother, who is currently 92 years old. When I was growing up, hell even now, she’d tell me a lot about her own stories, mostly about how terrifying life was under both the British Raj and Nizam rule (her side of my family is from Hyderabad - Google the Nizams and the Razakars if you’ve never heard about them, that’s a whole other thing of its own).
Something I remember very clearly is her telling me about this one song she was forced to sing in her school - she went to a Christian convent school - and the song was about the greatness of “George Prabhu and Mary Rani,” aka George V, Elizabeth II’s grandfather. Recently my mom was able to film her singing this song so that we could listen to the lyrics, which are originally in Telugu, and roughly translated it means “we’re singing in honor of George and Mary, who are the rulers of India and have brought great fortune to India, and we see them as our father and mother.”
This is just a really difficult reminder that when we’re talking about why Elizabeth II and the royal family don’t deserve our respect or condolences, many of us have very personal stories that run deep through our families. “But she was a mother, a grandmother, a person” and I don’t care because she and her family were in the business of dehumanizing and erasing the identities of millions of other mothers, other grandmothers, other PEOPLE. Why else would my great grandmother be forced to sing a song in their honor? “But she wasn’t responsible for India” fair enough, her darling grandfather had a great time doing that, but how about you go and talk to Kenya? Or anyone in Africa? Or the Caribbean? I’m sick and tired of being told to “not speak ill of the dead” when REALLY I and millions of others should be getting an apology from anyone who wants to “praise her legacy” and talk about how “revolutionary” she was.
edit: i got the george’s mixed up before. george v is elizabeth ii’s grandfather. george vi is her father.

ऐ वतन, वतन मेरे, आबाद रहे तू
मैं जहाँ रहूँ जहाँ में याद रहे तू
"Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom."
-- Tryst with destiny, Jawaharlal Nehru

India was under the colonization of the British for almost 200 years. Starting from the Battle of Plassey in 1764 to 15th August 1947.
Not only did the British cause enormous damage to the wealth and resources of our nation, but they also caused a fatal wound to the pride of the people.
India can become 'Sone ki chiriya' or the golden bird again, but it won't be possible if the westernized ideology of inferiority doesn't leave our country.
The speech of Lord Macaulay in the British Parliament paints the generational trauma they inflicted upon us.
"I accept catholic beyond the across and across of India and I accept not apparent one getting who is a beggar, who is a thief. Such abundance I accept apparent in this country, such top moral values, humans of such calibre, that I do not anticipate we would anytime beat this country, unless we breach the actual courage of this nation, which is her airy and cultural heritage, and, therefore, I adduce that we alter her old and age-old apprenticeship system, her culture, for if the Indians anticipate that all that is adopted and English is acceptable and greater than their own, they will lose their self-esteem, their built-in self-culture and they will become what we ambition them, an absolutely bedevilled nation."
Find pride in your culture and celebrate the independence of our nation!

Today we celebrate the 75th independence of India
15th August 1947, the day the British left India.
India was partitioned into seven, separating billions of our brothers and sisters from one another
Me and my Indian siblings stand on our motherland, Bharat, and the sing the national anthem, Jana Gana Mana with proudness and happiness
I am proud to be Indian and I wish everyone a happy independence day.
Be proud of who you are and always congratulate your motherland.
Keep your country clean and free from the trash, don't dirty your streets with plastics and waste. Keep them in your pockets or your bag until you find a dustbin. Keep your flags clean and never draw, stomp or dirty your national flag
Respect your country and all the freedoms fighters from every State of India as they were the ones who gave us the freedom, the right to walk on our land without fearing that the British will beat us up or even kill us
I will not name any specific names as there are billions of freedom fighters, and i would like to say that each and every one of them deserved to be honoured and respected
May they rest in peace and have a peaceful life in the heavens.
Be proud to be Indian,
Jai hind Jai Bharat.
ETHARA JENDA! (lift up the flag!)

Quote
The Supreme Court's decision to pause the sedition law is a significant development. For decades, successive governments have used the colonial-era law - the dreaded section 124a of the antiquated Indian Penal Code - against students, journalists, intellectuals, social activists, and those critical of the government to essentially suppress dissent and free speech. A law which was mainly used against Indian political leaders seeking independence from British rule in the 19th and early 20th centuries has now been weaponised as a tool of suppression by successive democratically elected governments.

Kunwar Singh, the hero of the first war of Independence and he is not heavily talked among all the other freedom fighters. He was the rebellious leader who started the first war of Indian independence and Indian revolt of 1857, by specifically the attacking and siege of Arrah House. The revolt in Arrah was led by the legendary man. He was 80 years old when he organized a group of armed soldiers to attack on the British East India Company’s troops. Salute to his courage and contributions that has led us for the Indian Independence.

I feel like not enough people talk about how Subhash Chandra Bose basically had wartime alliances with Nazi Germany. So yes, not even Indian freedom fighters who opposed British colonization are beyond criticism, when it comes to the methods they chose. Freedom fighters can also be incredibly problematic and it is not wrong for people to say that they don't support them. And it is not wrong to criticize them. It is okay to condemn them. One can understand that it was their oppression that had a role to play in leading them to this path, and still not support it.

Aruna Asaf Ali
Aruna Asaf Ali was born into a Bengali Brahmin family on July 16, 1909. She grew up during a time of great political upheaval in India. Despite societal opposition, she married Asaf Ali, a Muslim leader in the Congress, in 1928, marking the beginning of her active involvement in India's freedom movement. Following her marriage, Aruna joined various Congress activities, including the Salt Satyagraha, where she was arrested but remained undeterred. She gained widespread recognition for her brave act of hoisting the Congress flag during the Quit India Movement in Bombay. Even after India gained independence, Aruna continued her tireless efforts for social welfare. In 1954, she founded the National Federation of Women and later served as the first Mayor of Delhi in 1958. Additionally, she established a newspaper to amplify her voice for social change. Aruna was renowned for her staunch socialist beliefs and unwavering courage in advocating for change. Her contributions to the nation were recognized with several awards, including the prestigious Bharat Ratna in 1997. Throughout her life, Aruna exemplified the importance of standing up for one's convictions, regardless of the challenges faced.

“Mahatma Gandhi, wizened idol of India’s masses, believed to be more of a threat to Great Britain in prison than he did free. From behind the bars, Gandhi is still leader of the revolt against British rule. Pictures within this outline map of India shows Gandhi at his spinning wheel, reading and reclining on a hard pallet on the floor. His campaign has been slowed up greatly by government measures.”
