I. already kind of regret choosing to write a huge paper about play therapy as an alternative to ABA. almost all of the research I have found into play therapy treatment has presented it as something that should be provided in addition to ABA for supposed behavioral benefits, which is fucking asinine. the number one goal of child-centered play therapy is to cultivate an environment of self acceptance, and ABA is completely antithetical to that. if I have to read one more fucking article that talks about how play therapy did or didn't have an impact on the amount of eye-contact a child made at home as if anyone should give a shit about that I'm going to kill us all with hammers

There are many postdocs in academia, but not so many permanent researchers.
A new paper shows a statistics on where hundreds of Biomedical Sciences PhD graduates eventually ended up 10 years or more after graduation.
What strikes me there:
1. Sooo many postdocs go to administration positions after their postdoc is finished.
And it's true! I know so many people in administration who were good scientists before!
The following graph shows that from 418 PhD graduates, 325 went for a postdoc and 93 didn't. 145 administration/management/operation (AMO in the graph) positions in the end is for me a bit shocking.
Tumblr media
2. The time for a postdoc in academia to actually get a permanent/non trainee position can be up to 13 years!
Only half of the people makes it in 6 years after PhD graduation. That's much longer than getting a permanent job in administration. I do not want to be 13 years postdoc. This is also one of the reasons people quit academia.

There are many more facts in the original article. Go read it if you're interested.

when i was at the beginning of grad school and struggling a lot i would always (half) joke that if physics didn't work out at least there's always astrology lol.
now that i'm at my last class of my phd and struggling again i make this joke even more i think, because i've also gotten more astrology knowledge and more of a following on here. obviously i'm not going to quit at this late stage when i'm just struggling and in no danger of actually being kicked out or anything, i would just retake the course. but.
yall physics is hard, i love it and i'm glad i'm learning it and i don't mind not being the smartest one in the room but astrology comes to me much more naturally. if you want to contribute to my temptation to become a professional woowoo lady, the best ways you can support me against my fear of student loan debt is join my patreon or buy readings from me

i don鈥檛 have any real visual updates for u, but the peg box on the scroll has been chiseled! which is to say, it is now a box rather than a solid chunk of maple. all that鈥檚 left is cleaning, beveling, and fluting on the outside of the scroll,, very exciting things happening indeed.
also for those curious, that鈥檚 my classmate鈥檚 bench where they鈥檙e working on an exterior mold. i鈥檝e only shown interior molds on here so far, just thought i鈥檇 point it out for the avid follower of my luthiering tidbits lolol

I hate how Izuku thinks just because he doesn鈥檛 have a quirk, he鈥檚 useless. You could literally just use support items to replicate most people鈥檚 quirks. Wanna have eyes like Mei鈥檚? Use goggles. Wanna be a pikachu like Kaminari? Use a taser. In fact, a taser is probably better anyways since it can actually aim. (No offense to Denki, I love him sm and he gets better 馃ズ馃馃徎) Want explosions like Bakugo? Make them. Dynamite (which is literally made of Nitroglyerin just like a certain someone鈥檚 sweat) literally exists. 馃Ж
Literally almost every quirk is replicable.
Use spring shoes to hop like Mirko. Use a jet pack to fly similar to Hawks. Jet shoes to bounce like Gran Torino. Use gas bombs to knock people out like Midnight. Use water guns full of acid to be like Mina.
To be honest, it鈥檚 only the more nature inclined quirks (Inasa Yoarashi, Shouto/Enji/Touya Todoroki, Yo Shindo, etc..) that鈥檒l be harder to replicate. And even then I鈥檓 sure there鈥檚 a way to get close to something similar.
And the good thing is if you use support equipment this way, you can have multiple. Meanwhile everyone else is focusing solely on their quirk to the detriment of everything else, which isn鈥檛 very well-rounded.
Izuku is so smart. And he鈥檚 always adamant about how a quirk doesn鈥檛 define you. There aren鈥檛 villainous or heroic quirks, he says. (Though this may be me thinking of fanfic, I鈥檓 fairly certain he says something along these lines to Eri. 馃拃) Then why doesn鈥檛 he practice what he preaches?? I understand he鈥檚 literally been conditioned to see himself as useless because of those around him, but god. It鈥檚 just so sad to watch, honestly. He needs to watch some Iron Man pronto.
Takeaway; Izuku would be just as good a hero with support items instead of a flashy, dangerous quirk (no offense to OFA but it literally kills its users 馃拃馃馃檹馃徎) and he really needs some therapy asap. He has zero sense of self-worth. 馃槂
