Independence, Statistical Complacency & The Younger Generation.
Independence, Statistical Complacency & The Younger Generation. #indy2 #indyref2 #scotref
Before I continue with this post, I want to make it extremely clear that this is an objective analysis based on empirical evidence and statistical analysis. It is not a pop at the older generation, nor is it some form of morbid satire about the older generation of voters passing to the great beyond.
I am making that clear from the get-go because there will no doubt be those who will attempt to…

“ Il n’y a aucune décision prise par le Royaume-Uni qui pourait réellement satisfaire tout le Royaume-Uni. “
As for the young voters it was the ability to elect their own government which was one of the main appeals for them. In the last UK elections, Scotland elected one MP from the Conservative party (out of a possible 59 Scottish MP’s) with the majority of the other Scottish MP’s being elected from the Scottish National Party  However, the Conservative party won the UK vote with a majority of 36% so UK is now run by the Conservative party.  As England is larger than Scotland many of the decisions they make are for the benefit of England and has a negative effect on Scotland.  Scotland is such a different country to England in so many way from simple things like the weather to more complicated issue like immigration so there is no one UK decision that will work for the whole of the UK.  So if we were independent we would be able to elect our own government who would put the interests of the people of Scotland first.
One good thing that did come out of the vote is that a lot more people, particularly young people, have taken an interest in politics.  The turnout for the vote was around 85% of the population when in a normal UK election it is usually around 45%.  I can only hope that now these people are more engaged in what is going on around them then they will stand up and start to challenge the decisions made by the government and not just follow like sheep.  There is also talk of a second independence referendum, known as Indy2, but I am not sure if or when they will ever happen.

POLITICS 001 // SNAP ELECTION AN INDEPENDENCE MINEFIELD
Tumblr media
Oddly I was discussing politics last night with an American friend who is a constitutional conservative, and during the course of our chat, I said Theresa May should hold a snap election, given she wasn’t leader of the party during the last election, and democracy and stuff. Low and behold, just a few hours ago the Prime Minister announced her intentions to hold a snap election on the 8th of June. Jeremy Corbyn, the Labour leader, announced his parties intentions to vote in favour of a snap election so it would seem we will be going back to the ballot box on the 8th of June, and the question of independence will be at the heart of decision on who to vote for.
The independence question will, undoubtedly, be key in the run up to this snap election, and could make or break the chances of a second referendum in the near future. The weight of this will be largely placed on the shoulders of the SNP, who may now see their historic results in the 2015 General Election as a cross to bear. On the 13th of March, Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland’s First Minister, announced her intentions to seek a second independence referendum. Sturgeon would not have known at the time she had just painted her party into a manifesto corner.
Having made that announcement as leader of the party Sturgeon must go to the electorate with a second referendum at the heart of the parties election manifesto. To not do this would seem underhanded, there is no option, the SNP have forced upon themselves a largely single-issue manifesto. Given the momentous changes since the 2015 General Election, the swell in support for the SNP may not be there. The party undoubtedly benefited from disillusioned Labour voters, with Brexit on the horizon these same voters may return to their red homes, hoping to bolster the ranks of the only party that could legitimately challenge and steer the upcoming negotiations. Not to mention the party would have secured votes from non-independence supporters, given that independence featured only on the periphery of the parties campaign.
Consider this, does the party have the ability to maintain a historic 56 MPs, to maintain the frankly insane swings needed to secure certain seats will become a lot harder. The problem is that should the party lose any ground, the next Prime Minister will surely use it as a stick to fend off any referendum. They’ll point to a decline in support and say the party have no mandate for a referendum, the hopes of Indy2 in the next few years could be squashed on the 09th of June when results roll in.
The reverse is similarly true, if the SNP can repeat their previous coup, the next Prime Minister will have a First Minister at their door citing their General Election mandate, and their Scottish Election mandate. Any incoming leader would have to consent to a second referendum.
While Brexit will be at heart of this General Election, will take centre stage and the limelight – Scotland’s opportunity for a referendum, and for independence could be decided on the 08th of June, it may not be too drastic to suggest should the SNP fail, the question will have to be put away for another five years, if not far longer.

this is the hypocrisy I’ve been talking about (not on tumblr)
fuck off ruthie. #votesnp on 8th June @ayeforscotland
even if you have your doubts about the SNP, it would be beneficial to lend them your vote this June, a united Scotland all voting snp will provide the strongest opposition to the Tories, and if they lose any of their 56 Westminster seats, that could derail the entire independence campaign, even if you vote for another indy-supporting party or candidate, largely because we all know Westminster will not pay attention to that. let’s get 59 out of 59 SNP seats so they can get us the hell out of there!!
