Lolita in Romania
This could be somewhat viewed as a look into the Lolita trend in Romania from my personal experience.
Being a Harajuku fashion Enthusiast in Romania is hard, especially when you’ve liked Lolita fashion before the early movements around 2008 and usually too shy (& sometimes too comfortable/cheap) to go around in the styles you like & would love to wear.
♪ The community here is pretty slow, but it lives. Always appreciate people here trying Lolita, enjoying it and spreading the word. Especially since it took me a long time to find (in Romania) people interested in Lolita fashion (or any other alternative Japanese styles).
The styles that I am fond of, even since before my teens, are mostly Classic Lolita, Elegant Gothic Aristocrat/Kodona and Wa-Loli. Used to search for pictures and online magazine scans for hours back in the early 2000s.
Went to Fashion Design in University hoping to evolve my love of the style but the teachers were really skeptic and tried to steer me off my path & towards more... academic & “contemporary universal” pursuits.
♪ In December 2007 I decided to join an anime club to nurture my passion for Japan & there I found the magnificent and amazing Shinju ~♪  (knew her then as an anime fan/seamstress) who shared my passion for the Lolita styles and is now a renowned cosplayer~! ♪ Went in (November?) 2008 to a convention for the 1st time. In Bucharest, it’s called Nijikon. Got to see some of Shinju’s full self-made Lolita outfits ❤ ♪ For the next couple of years the interest in Lolita fashion started growing & in 2010 with the fashion show by Shinju being held at a convention called Otaku Festival more and more girls were interested in making a community ❤ ♪ After a few more conventions & a couple of years of trying to organize a Lolita event, in 2012 I tried organizing in my home town a fashion walk & meetup and called it J-Fashion Tea Party. With my pocket money as budget I invited some friends, ordered a chocolate cake & held it at a Tea House. It wasn’t a big event. A short walk away from the central park it was the most people that have gathered for a simple meeting, walk, tea & photos. We had fun & that was what was most important~♪ ♪ Afterward it got harder to gather people and some into more alternative styles asked if we could do more events, whenever time (& my budget) would allow it I organized a few more Alternative Fashion Meetings & Walks.
Sadly, as with many small events here with no free things, stalls and more prepared, it all lasted for 2 more years with less & less people attending.
In Romania now Lolita & Japanese fashion enthusiasts can mostly gather at or around conventions, or just groups of friends into the styles hanging out.
♪ Since 2012 there have been several fashion walks and lolita events held in different cities in Romania with many more attendees than in my home town. The capital, Bucharest, having most of the Lolita community & events, followed closely by Iasi, Cluj, Craiova & Brasov.
♪ The latest event involving Japanese styles, publicly held in Romania, was at Nijikon 2016 by a relatively newly formed group of people, with a passion for alternative Japanese fashion, who want the same thing as I do, which is to spread the word and find more people into the same things to enjoy them together.
Decided to write this in hopes that someday the girls(and guys) will gather & organize something and keep the lolita flame alive.. Most events are centralized in Bucharest, with people constantly complaining about locations if they are further away then their own towns. Such issues will persist for you cannot satisfy all & as long as there will be no major Lolita event announced with at least 6 months prior, to give people time to prepare & save time & money for transport, accommodation, food & the actual event merch. The community being mostly comprised of teens and university students means their budgets are small and even in the chance that a big event will be held the lack of attendees will decrease any chances of such an event ever being held again.

My baking journey in Romania
When I returned to Montreal from Romania, it was for the first time when I felt that I’m coming home. I admit that I missed the quiet and the universe that I have created over the last year, my new friends here, and the places that I haven’t discovered here yet.
Tumblr media
I spent two months in Romania, and although it may seem like a long time, it passed as quickly as lightning. I arrived at my parent's home in Arad three weeks earlier than planned, surprising my family who needed several seconds to realize that it was really me.
My cousin, Mihaela, the only person who knew of my arrival plans, picked me up at the airport in Budapest. We then drove around Budapest to meet with Mark Griffiths, who once sent me a verse for a Jar full of Magic. I had never met Mark, but I wanted to keep my promise and to personally Spread the Magic in Budapest.
We met in a cafe, where we talked about things that people rarely discuss, we even shared a cheesecake while discussing chocolate.
Caught in the magic of the moment, we lost track of time and my cousin had to come and get me since she had been waiting for quite some time.
Tumblr media
We then drove directly to Arad, pleased that we were able to find Mark and that we Spread the Magic in Budapest.
The stay with my parents was full of events and was an emotional roller coaster. I celebrated my birthday, my father’s birthday, my nephew’s name day on St. Andrew’s - many opportunities to share the magical chocolate cake. We hadn’t spent so much time together since I was 18 years old, and it was interesting to see myself as a child once again through their eyes.
Tumblr media
I also baked for the family who gave me the cake recipe, both for my friend Mirela and her mother. It was the first time they tasted my version of the magical cake. They welcomed me just as I remembered they used to do when I was younger. Every time you set foot in their house, you are enchanted by the beauty found all around, the works that she brought to life over time (paintings, tapestries, macrame), and all kinds of artisanal objects, some bringing life and joy to every moment on a daily basis.
We started talking and the memories came bubbling out. I found a picture of Mirela when she was a child, with her family and the magic cake - I was so happy, the photo brought me back to the moment when I first tasted the magic.
Tumblr media
I always felt inspired by their universe of beauty and art, and by their spirit that was so vivid to my eyes.
I stayed for over a month with my family in Arad, I reconnected with people and places from my childhood and brought them all back to the present.
I was pleasantly impressed by rediscovering Arad’s bohemian locales and events, to meet new people and to discover the curiosity the people around me had to taste the magical cake. It is magical because it brings me closer to the soul of the people, it makes me discover things through itself, and it constantly challenges and surprises me in new ways.
In the meantime, I was preparing for the baking marathon in Bucharest, where I was planning on baking for my friends for 10 days. It was challenging because I had to manage all the logistics: suppliers, storage, baking, delivery and all of the communication. I also had other friends I wanted to see, administrative issues to solve, and a few meetings that I had scheduled before my arrival.
Tumblr media
I would have liked to see more people, but time did not permit it. I managed to get everything done and solve all the problems I had. It was an intense experience with very little sleep, but of course I discovered new things about the cake and about what I want to do going forward.
I realized how much it mattered that I was transparent and I shared my baking process, which offered people the possibility to understand and trust my magic.
Tumblr media
I was pleasantly surprised when a friend from Cluj asked me to bake for her 3 year old girl’s birthday. She wanted to offer her something special for her first contact with chocolate, and she thought that my magic chocolate cake would be the best option. I was flattered and, of course, I couldn’t refuse, so I sent the magic cake to Cluj with the help of another friend, who was going to visit them.
What can be more gratifying than to see people's joy?
Tumblr media
I also realized that in a continuous baking rhythm I need help in the kitchen. And wouldn’t you know it, I thought of getting a robotic friend, the new KitchenAid stand mixer, which I ended up buying my first week back in Montreal. Even though I now have the help I need in the kitchen, I still have to wait for my work permit before I can start Spreading the Magic here in Montreal. Until then, I will be experimenting with new ideas in the kitchen using my new helper.
The last weeks in Romania were spent in Arad with my entire family including my husband, and I did not bake again until early January, for my father's name day, St. John. That was the last cake I baked in Romania.
Tumblr media
The two months spent in Romania gave me the confidence to move forward with my plans, taught me to be patient and to persevere in always finding new ideas to spread the magic with my chocolate cake. And for that, and for being part of my cake story I thank you all, with all my heart!
P.S: A special thank you to Cristian Dumitrescu (Gradina Vlahia) for his kindness and for being such an amazing host, and for sharing his beautiful kitchen with me for 10 days - it wasn’t easy, I tell you, but it was amazing.

Exclusive: U.S. military looking at deploying anti-missile system…
BERLIN (Reuters) – The U.S. military has held preliminary discussions about moving a powerful missile defense system to Germany to boost European defenses, according to two sources familiar with the issue, a move that experts said could trigger fresh tensions with Moscow.
A Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) interceptor is launched during a successful intercept test, in this undated handout photo provided by the U.S. Department of Defense, Missile Defense Agency. U.S. Department of Defense, Missile Defense Agency/Handout via Reuters/File Photo
The tentative proposal to send the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system to Europe predates U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the 2015 Iran nuclear accord, and comes amid a broader push to strengthen Europe’s air and missile defenses.
While Europe and the United States are at odds over the fate of the nuclear agreement, they share concerns about Iran’s continued development of ballistic missiles.
Iran’s Shahab 3 missiles can already travel 2,000 km, enough to reach southern Europe, and its Revolutionary Guards have said they will increase the range if threatened since the range is capped by strategic doctrine, not technology constraints.
U.S. European Command has been pushing for a THAAD system inEurope for years, but the U.S. withdrawal from the Iran nuclear accord has added urgency to the issue, said Riki Ellison, head of the non-profit Missile Defense Advocacy Alliance.
A senior German military official cited the need to add more radars across Europe to better track and monitor potential threats, and cue interceptors if needed.
The U.S. Defense Dept said no such action had been decided.
“There are currently no plans to station THAAD systems in Germany. We do not discuss potential future military planning, as we would not want to signal our intent to potential adversaries. Germany remains among our closest partners and strongest allies,” said Pentagon spokesman Eric Pahon.
Deploying another U.S. defensive system to Europe could reassure NATO allies in southern Europe already within striking range of Iran’s missiles, said one military official from that region.
Talk of deploying a THAAD system in Europe also comes against the backdrop of rising tensions between the West and Russia.
NATO has long insisted that its missile defense program is not directed at Russia, but the alliance has adopted a tougher tone toward Moscow in the wake of the poisoning of a Russian former spy in England.
Moscow denies any involvement in the poisoning, and blames the tensions on NATO’s military expansion eastward, and its assembly of a ballistic missile shield with a key site inRomania that was declared combat-ready in 2016.
Moving THAAD to Germany could plug a radar gap caused by a two-year delay in completion of a second Aegis Ashore missile defense site in Poland that was initially due to open this year.
The issue may be raised in a new Pentagon missile defense review expected in early June. The review may draw a closer connection between missile defense and a need to deter Russia that was highlighted in the new U.S. national defense strategy, said Tom Karako, senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
MESSAGE TO EUROPEAN ALLIES
One U.S. military official said there had been preliminary talks with German military officials on moving a THAAD system to Ramstein Air Base in Germany, headquarters for the U.S. Air Force in Europe and NATO Allied Air Command.
“It would be a further political message to the Europeans that we’re serious about protecting our allies,” said the official. “The initial assessment is that Germany would very likely not have a problem with a THAAD deployment,” U.S. General Curtis Scaparrotti, head of U.S. EuropeanCommand, last week said he was seeking more troops and equipment to deter Russia, but declined further comment.
A second source said German officials were open to the move as a way to better protect civilian populations.
The German defense ministry is working to rebuild its own short- and medium-range missile defenses after years of cuts.
Starting later this year, it also plans to review territorial missile defense needs in a conceptual study that will also look at THAAD and the Arrow 3 anti-missile system built by Israel and the United States, a spokesman said.
The German foreign ministry, which oversees foreign troops stationed in Germany, said it could not confirm sending any signals about a possible THAAD deployment to the United States.
Washington does not need Germany’s permission to move such equipment under existing basing contracts, but the sources said a formal notification would be sent before any move to proceed.
The THAAD system is built by Lockheed Martin Corpwith a powerful Raytheon Co AN/TPY-2 radar, to shootdown short-, medium-, and intermediate-range ballistic missiles.

Royal Blood (Vampire Kisses #6)(13) Author: Ellen Schreiber
"Really?"
"Here's a picture of her." Mrs. Sterling opened the weathered photo album. "This is my husband's mother." She showed me a picture of a thin woman with high cheekbones and Alexander's soulful eyes.
Some of the pages were fraying away from the binding and a few pictures were coming unglued. "This Mansion meant everything to her. And so did her family. As you might know, she and Alexander's grandfather were barons. They kept company with heads of state and other royalty, such as kings and queens acrossEurope ."
I knew it! She is going to tell me that I'm not of royal blood-therefore I'm not worthy of her son.
"But they escapedRomania ," she continued, "when the family was being persecuted. She saved them, really. If it wasn't for her quick thinking, there would never have been a safe Constantine and never an Alexander. She kept the royal bloodline alive. And that is very important to all of us."
"Wow- she sounds very brave," I began to say.
"When it was safe,Constantine went back toRomania . His mother remained here."
I hung on her every word.
"Did Alexander tell you why he moved here?" she asked.
"Yes, but he may have left something out. He can be mysterious."
"Our family had an arrangement with theMaxwells - another prominent and noble family inRomania -with their daughter, Luna. We wanted to carry on our royal bloodline. It was very important to Mr. Sterling, you see. He's spent so much time worrying... Read here: Read Royal Blood (Vampire Kisses #6)(13) online free by Ellen Schreiber
