(2024-02-18 imge ©sophos) The mobile companies have schemes to alert users when a call looks suspicious. And personally these must do a reasonable job as I get fewer such caalls. But the other day I did get a call from a company wanting to talk about my THREE account. They did have details, but said they were working for THREE. I stopped the call, although I think it may have been genuine. This goes to show that we do need better nuisance caller software to reject more of these calls so we can be more confident that calls coming through are genuine.

From my statistical back ground any method needs to minimise type 1 and type 2 errors. That is limit the number of calls that get through which are nuisance calls, as well as limiting the number if rejected calls that are real. It is very difficult to do this. As if you focus on limiting the false positives (calls that get through) you will increase the number of false negatives (rejecting the real calls).

All the networks have software to detect scam calls. Recently O2 have become the second network after EE to adopt Hiya's technology that is based on AI. It is good to see the networks developing their software in this area.

The system will being used by EE and instaalled by O2 will detect scamer texts as well as calls.

The wolf chat is not a thing yet! I don’t think 2006 phones were very good at group chats yet. (Maybe I’m wrong? Anyone remember more about the history of group texting?) Remains of Missing Hollywood Actress Believed to Have Been Found in Shallow Grave in Northern California: LAPD

Just hours after police announced the remains of a 25-year-old actress missing for over a month were believed to have been found in Northern California, friends and loved ones of the young woman gathered outside her Hollywood apartment building for a candlelight vigil.

The body of Adea Shabani is believed to be the remains discovered in a shallow grave up north, Los Angeles Police Department officials announced Tuesday.

At an afternoon news conference, LAPD officials also confirmed they think 33-year-old Christopher Spotz — a man who they say was involved in an intimate relationship with her — was somehow involved in the missing woman's death before he fatally shot himself, Capt. William Hayes said. He killed himself following a pursuit in the Corona area last Thursday.

In a news release, LAPD called him a "person of interest."

Despite what a friend told KTLA earlier, authorities have not positively identified the remains as Adea Shabani's. A cause of death is also under investigation, though police said they suspect she was the victim of a homicide.

The news comes after officials said Tuesday that LAPD detectives had responded to Nevada County to investigate a suspected shallow grave amid their search for the missing woman.

The grave site was found on the banks of Dry Creek in the Spencerville Wildlife Area, in an area about 50 miles north of Sacramento, according to a statement from the Nevada County Sheriff's Office. LAPD had contacted the office Monday to notify sheriff's officials that they were working an active missing persons case in the area.

Detectives from LAPD and the Sheriff's Office, as well as anthropologists from Cal State Chico responded to the scene, where they worked to determine if there were human remains buried at the location and whether they were tied to an active missing persons case, the statement said.
