The dark descended over the bazaar as the two put the commotion behind them. Death, the cards had said. Death. Death. Death. Were Leander a more superstitious man, then maybe he'd have taken it more ominously than it had felt in that moment. His understanding of tarot was equitable to someone of sub-novice awareness; senseless card garbage. Prince Ikaros of Avalon would guffaw when Leander said that there was no power in knowing your fate, no strength in working to gleam what lay beyond the esoteric. Realy power came from what you were passionate about, your ideals, and your emotions. Leander took every ounce of that and put it into his fists; courageous and stalwart. He didn't balk at the thought of coming face to face with the Iskarans or their witchers, he relished the day that it would inevitably come.
They were used to picking off young, defenseless witches; the stories of what they did to their children were enough to harden any heart. Leander liked to imagine that when met with an Olympian who was not some frightened, untrained supernatural raised to despise what they'd been born with, things would end differently. The Astorians were not so far off, they corralled witches that they pulled from farmsteads, out of galleys and ratways. They thrust them into a blaze and called it a holy act to burn the flesh from their skin. All that bravado, but call down a little lightning and most of them went crying home to their mothers.
"But not here." The cold air that rose off of the harbor was what took in his words; the swirling mist that sifted with the ripples of the tides. They'd carry them off to the distant vessels making their way in and out of the harbor, sailed ships and others with plumes of coal-powered towers rising from their midst. Every year the world evolved, but some things had yet to change. His gaze found his friend again as Leander's hand settled on Morgan's shoulder before the witch gave it an appraising squeeze, "Never here."
He could have run off. Spared Leander the upset that rattled him now. Yet, the experience had been shared. Morgan wasn't alone in the feeling of betrayal. Though he did take the apparent crime far more personally. Visions of torture, hangings, burnings and so much worse flickered behind the thief's eyelids. Made his pale skin crawl.
Matters of ethics that people here might consider injustices. The laws that protected mortals from magic in Iskaldrik. To toy with the very word was to put ones life at risk. Their families and communities too. The line was clear back on the farm, but traveling with Tobias illustrated how terribly endless both man and witcher cruelties could be.
He saw this bazaar overtaking the wench from her little shop in an instant. Tearing, cursing, chaining, bleeding. To make an example of her. Only, that didn't happen at all. Their surroundings remained peaceful as before. Even the commanding Prince spared her. An invisible, intangible, worthless threat in lieu of punishment.
So deep inside of himself, Morgan trudged forward with a troubled mind. His feet carried him wherever Leander still desired to lead them. Across a sturdy harbor, where most strangers backs were turned to face the tranquility only found at a watery edge. The less they looked the better. The more he could... reemerge. "You don't pretend..." Morgan still spoke gravely. "... I've seen so many killed for less. ... A mortal to toy with magic. I think of my brother's... 'yours. It's terribly insulting to me."
There was a cost. Those who did not earn it, but made fun should be shunned.

The International Court of Justice did not order Israel to halt its military campaign - an implied recognition of Israel's right to self defence in the wake of the Hamas attacks on 7 October last year. But the measures called for today are designed to offer the Palestinians of Gaza some measure of protection, while the judges consider South Africa's fundamental charge against Israel. Israel, a country born out of the ashes of the world's worst example of genocide, must now live under this legal shadow until the court delivers its verdict on Genocide. Cycling advocates are calling for safer conditions for children cycling to school, after the Minister of Transport told councils to stop work on imposing blanket speed reductions. As classes return from next week, Patrick Morgan of Cycling Action Network said children did not have freedom to cycle because of fast traffic, even though they wanted to. "As recently as the 1970s and 80s, it was very common for children to bike to school. "That's quite uncommon now and most schools have fewer than one in 10 students getting to school by bike." Northland is set to receive an additional $4 million towards flood resilience projects, a year since Cyclone Gabrielle battered the area. The region is dealing with a billion-dollar cyclone hit, and it will require the biggest recovery yet. US politicians have called for new laws to criminalise the creation of deepfake images, after explicit faked photos of Taylor Swift were viewed millions of times online. The images were posted on social media sites, including X and Telegram. US Representative Joe Morelle called the spread of the pictures "appalling". In a statement, X said it was "actively removing" the images and taking "appropriate actions" against the accounts involved in spreading them. 8, 14, 25, 27, 37! d10 option, but do 2 per question if you wanna answer w all your characters!
finally i have time on my laptop to type this out ........ thank you morgan for my life ................ (i had to roll this d10 so many times cause it refused to pick anything but 5, and while i have a lot of thoughts about gildy, other characters need love) 8. If they were given 1000 acres of land with no strings attached, what would they do with it? Gildy: obvious answer here is build her own forge from the ground up. like hello. how sexy of her to do this. but like, she misses the bustle of being around people all the time so it’d be open to the public for demos/lessons. are teaching forges a thing? they are in my world and she runs it and its full of tiny little dwarven babies who probably shouldn’t be allowed access to burning hot metal but like she’s a cleric so its fiiiiiiine Ezra: this is a toughie for him but the dice are forcing me to think. My first thought for him would honestly be give it away to some farmers or something, since he’s never really been the kind of guy to have personal possessions or things entirely his own. like. he grew up in a temple and then spent the next large chunk of his life doing 24/7 hospice care for someone, he’s never owned a house, or had things just for him. his whole life has been about community and sharing, he’d feel bad using it for any of his own desires.
however, for the sake of the question, if he has to take it and do something with it himself. big fat library. (where will he get the books from? don’t worry about it.) he only has 8 int but he thoroughly understands the value of knowledge, and you know, little selfish bonus. a huge collection of books like that is his best shot at finding something out about cate
14. What’s a personality trait they wish they had?
Ebbie: Confidence. Not necessarily in the sense that he doubts himself, though he does a fair amount, but mainly what he wants is the ability to make other people believe him when he Does think he can do something. He doesn’t want to be “trying to make something of himself” in everyone’s eyes forever. He’s already made something.
Nissy: Absolutely nothing he’s perfect how he is how DARE you insinuate that he could need ANYTHING added to his finely manufactured personali- (Patience. He has so, so many years to go ahead of him and he doesn’t know how to make things last. He’s worried that if he keeps letting people and interests slip through his fingers like sand he’ll have nothing left to hold before he even reaches his final lifetime.)
25. If there was a day held in their honor, what would people have to do on that day? Craving: ooooooooooooooooooooooohohohohohohoho. Oh boy this is ,.... this is tasty. I’m thinking a sort of mardigras crossed with the purge but less murder in which the vibe is “fucking anything goes, you’re the tits so damn well act like it”. extravagancy, over-dressing for the occassion, blatant gluttony, open container alcohol, if you think it’s pretty its yours kinda attitude. tons of costume jewelry on your body and trinkets in your pocket with the expectation that you’ll swipe some and others will swipe yours, and you’ll come home with a new selection of “finery”. the nice things stay locked at home. restaurants offer free food and stores have huge sales, card games and county fair style side shows in the middle of the street. an excuse to indulge recklessly. Udoora: so like, there’s Kind of already a day in their honor cause the whole town has their yearly festival where they pray to the goddess and go yo whats up lady is your champion stepping down or are we re-blessing the one we already have!! but that’s not specific to doora. one Just for her... country town festival. think bilbo’s 111th birthday minus the magic fireworks. whole city comes out to party, tons of food, music and dancing, the streets lined with wildflower garlands. stories and laughing around a bonfire as the sun leaves the sky, reverence for the people around you and the place you call home.
27. What makes a person beautiful to them?
Stella: Gentleness. Now you may read this and go how the FUCK did she end up with craving, and the answer to that is: this question said “beautiful” not “extremely sexy”. she got together with craving because she was horny and THEN she fell in love with craving’s soft side. (Her favorite physical aspect of craving is her hair. she loves to run her fingers through it, because it’s always inexplicably soft, in comparison to the horns and the barbs)
Stella grew up in the woods though, learning to tread light so as not to scare an animal or disrupt a nest. Her favorite place to be as a kid was calf-deep in the slowest part of the river. She knows the soft kiss of the sun on shoulders and the cushion of moss under toes. She was raised in the gentleness of nature, and she longs to see that gentleness reflected in humanity.
Hedja: Now this is an interesting one bc I’d explicitly decided against romance if I ever play them (not that if they don’t pursue romance they’re incapable of seeing beauty but it’s not something i’d thought much at all about). I’d say humor, levity, optimism. The ability to find any speck of brightness you can and kindle it. They don’t care much for physical looks or appearances, but that belief in happiness around every corner is what makes them continue to serve their god, because they find it to be the most beautiful part of life.
37. What do they think is a conspiracy? Tov: so. a conspiracy that he believes is true is that rowan and sloan are fucking to make him and moos jealous. we know this. but a truth that he believes is conspiracy ... you know i’m gonna say that there’s several warlock patrons who are definitely real in d&d canon but he refuses to believe that they exist because he had such shit luck trying to contact them with rax. (don’t ask me which ones i don’t know enough d&d lore for this) Roona: my god. she’s the perfect one for this holy shit ... she’s about 30% convinced that every thing that’s been said to her for her entire life is fake and she’s part of a really fucked up social experiment, so there’s that. she’s also a strong believer in the “we’re all in a simulation” theory, as well as “i’m the only one who’s alive and everyone else is a simulation” theory. she waffles on and off as to whether all the gods are actually just one guy. there’s one town she passed through where she’s sure the king has been dead for years and is being puppeted around by a necromancer group running a shadow government. there’s no fucking way math is real, everyone’s bullshitting numbers bigger than 100. not really a conspiracy but since getting the ass spoon she doesn’t believe in the societal value of forks cause she’s been doing just fucking fine with her spoon and her hands only thank you VERY much.
#thank you again doing this fucked supremely#craving#tov#stella#gildy#ezra#ebbie#nissy#hedja#roona#udoora

This Week in Caps: Week 3
Welcome to This Week in Caps, a weekly newsletter where I recap everything important that’s been going on in the world of the Washington Capitals this past week.
This Week’s Games
10/17/18 vs New York Rangers, W 4-3 (OT)
I hope you like the Caps on Wednesday Night Hockey, because the Caps have hosted that particular nationally televised game for three straight weeks. The Caps took on an old rival in the rebuilding Rangers, and Alex Ovechkin faced Henrik Lundqvist, the goalie he’s beaten more than any other.
The first period was fast-moving, with not a lot of stoppages and little to no shenanigans. Brett Connolly was robbed by Lundqvist, and Mika Zibanejad scored on a rebound in front about six minutes into the game. 1-0 Rangers. The action got going with about seven minutes left in the period; the Rangers had a mad scrum in front of the Caps’ net, and Christian Djoos made a huge save by sweeping the puck off the goalline, keeping a goal off the scoresheet. The defensive efforts paid off about a minute later, when John Carlson scored a booming slap shot goal directly off a Nicklas Backstrom faceoff win, trying the game 1-1.
Shortly into the second period, Ovechkin was back at it again against Lundqvist. On a power play, Carlson kept the puck in the zone and flipped it over to Ovechkin, who slapped a one-timer from the very back of the Ovi Office and caught Lundqvist off guard, giving the Caps a 2-1 lead. But the Rangers would be quick to tie the score, with them getting their own power play and Jimmy Vesey tapping in a goal to make it 2-2. Ovechkin made sure to have the last laugh of the period, scoring yet another one-timer power play goal, eerily similar to the first one, to make it 3-2 Caps.
But the lead wouldn’t last, and Chris Kreider scored a tip-in goal on a power play for the Rangers that tied the score 3-3. And despite everyone’s best efforts, this game would go to overtime.
Evgeny Kuznetsov drove play when he had the puck in overtime, eventually faking at shooting the puck at the net. Matt Niskanen, hovering nearby, dunked home the rebound to score the overtime winner, giving the Caps the 4-3 win.
The Caps outshot the Rangers 38-32 and had the advantage on faceoffs at 53%. Each team went 2/4 on the power play, and Braden Holtby saved 29/32 shots. This game was closer than the Caps probably would have liked, but it’s a win all the same, and the Caps will be happy to take it.
10/19/18 vs Florida Panthers, L 5-6 (SO)
The Panthers came into this one winles on the season, and the Caps were looking for two in a row. And when all was said and done, this game ended up being a wild one.
Joe Beninati described the Caps’ first period as “sleepy,” and that’s how it felt. Defense was not good, and they just did not look good in the first at all. Vincent Trocheck scored halfway through the period. The Caps responded five minutes later on a John Carlson goal, throwing home a puck in front of the net to make it 1-1. But the Panthers pounded the Caps the rest of the period, scoring the next goal just thirty seconds later. Florida got goals from Evgenii Dadonov, Colton Sceviour, and Jared McCann to make it 4-1 Panthers by the end of the first.
Things changed for the Caps between the first and second periods — Braden Holtby was taken out of the game in favor of Pheonix Copley, and the lines were put in a blender. It seemed to work, as the Caps were completely revitalized and were dominating play, with the defense especially looking a lot better (the Panthers did not get their first shot on Copley until halfway through the period).
They got the comeback rolling with just under two minutes in the frame — Brett Connolly scored on a sharp angle to make it 2-4. Later, the Caps got an odd-man rush and Jakub Vrana scored from his knees to make it 3-4. And just a few minutes later, Devante Smith-Pelly took advantage on a bad bounce off the Panther goalie, and scored on the second shot to complete the comeback and tie the game at 4. The Panthers were also forced to make a goalie change, pulling James Reimer and replacing him with Michael Hutchinson.
However, the Caps were a bit undone by all the penalties at the end of the period. Alex Ovechkin was called for interference against Aaron Ekblad at 17:18 and the Caps were called for too many men at 18:03, giving the Panthers a two-man advantage for 1:15. Matt Niskanen, Brooks Orpik, and Nicklas Backstrom put up a great defensive showing, but the Panthers capitalized and Jonathan Huberdeau scored at 19:09 to make it 5-4 Panthers, and they still had about fifty seconds of power play time. Then the refs didn’t like what Evgeny Kuznetsov said to them and sent him to the box for unsportsmanlike conduct with eight seconds left in the period. The Panthers would start the third with three seconds of five-on-three, and then 1:45 of power play time, which the Caps killed.
The Caps got a power play at 16:52 of the third, and they pulled Copley for the extra attacker halfway through the power play, and Backstrom scored the tying goal, tapping one into the net at 18:35, trying the game at 5. But then Niskanen took a penalty with 23 seconds left in the game, and there was no more scoring in regulation, so the Panthers had just over 1:30 of four-on-three power play time to start overtime. The Caps killed that, and there were no more whistles in overtime and the rest of it was played four-on-four. The Caps had many chances in overtime, particularly a Dmitry Orlov shot off the post, but this game would be decided in a shootout.
The shootout went thus: T.J. Oshie goal, Aleksander Barkov goal, Kuznetsov goal, Nick Bjugstad no goal, Ovechkin no goal, Trocheck goal, Backstrom no goal, Huberdeau goal. The Caps lose the shootout 2-3 and the game 5-6.
The Caps outshot the Panthers 31-30 and were barely beaten on faceoffs, winning 49.2%. They went 1/3 on the power play, while the Panthers went 2/7. Holtby saved just 7/11 shots in his short start, and Copley saved 18/19.
The new third line (Vrana, Connolly, and Lars Eller) looked excellent tonight, and was the most prominent forward line. Orlov also had a couple of very strong looks. Copley was excellent in relief and kept the Caps in the game, even though the Panthers shooters made the rookie look a little silly in the shootout. Were it not for the shootout, he might have gotten his first NHL win.
The game was wildly entertaining, and even though the Caps got down and looked bad early, they showed great resilience in making that three-goal comeback and then tying it yet again late in regulation. This looked like it was going to be a horrible loss, and ending this game with a point is something they’ll gladly take.
Current record: 3-2-2
What’s Going on in the World of the Caps
Wilson Appeal
Tom Wilson met with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman on October 18th to discuss the appeal of his twenty-game suspension. The hearing lasted seven hours, and Bettman’s decision is expected sometime midweek.
Brett Connolly Leaves Yet Another Teammate Hanging
[gif by @faceoffs]
Remember last year when Kuzy was looking for a fist bump from Brett Connolly, and Connolly left him hanging, resulting in Kuzy fist bumping himself? Well, Friday against the Panthers, Conno left another teammate in the dust, and the victim this time, Jakub Vrana, was left to fist bump himself. This seems to be becoming a trend for Connolly, and if history repeats itself, we may already have the winner of gif of the year. (x)
Special Teams
The Capitals’ power play this season has been absolutely deadly. They’re currently cashing in on an unreal 38.5% of power play opportunities, which is best in the league. The big guns have been doing their job. The penalty kill, however, is stuck near the other end of the spectrum. They’re killing 72.4% of penalties, which is 24th in the league. Ideally, you’d like to be somewhere around 80%, or maybe even 85%, to have a really effective penalty kill. They’ve been letting in too many chances and need to tighten it up a bit. Maybe the loss of Jay Beagle or the absence of Tom Wilson, both excellent penalty killers, is really hurting them, but they’re going to have to do something about it and get better.
Faceoffs
Winning faceoffs? Never heard of her. Overall, the Capitals have won 46.0% of faceoffs, which is 29th in the league. Not good. The funny thing is that not everyone is doing horribly; Nicklas Backstrom is winning 54.5%, which is quite good, and Lars Eller is winning 51.2%, which is not shabby. But Nic Dowd is winning 43.8% and Evgeny Kuznetsov is winning only 36.2%, which is very bad, especially because he has taken the second most draws on the team (after Backstrom). The loss of Jay Beagle certainly hurts in this department, but the centers, especially Kuznetsov and Dowd, need to pick it up. Winning faceoffs can really help possession and even lead directly to goals.
Other Miscellaneous Happenings
Ovi repaired one of his teeth, which was broken in the Stanley Cup Final
Ovi doesn’t need pants
Brooks Orpik was inducted into his high school’s Hall of Fame
Wanna see pics from Casino Night? Here ya go
Player of the Week
John Carlson is putting up his very early case for the Norris Trophy and reminding people how much of a mistake it was he wasn’t an All-Star and Norris finalist last season. In two games this week, he tallied two goals and two assists for four points. He is second on the Caps in goals, assists, and points, trailing Ovechkin, Backstrom, and Kuznetsov respectively. He is currently the second-highest-scoring defenseman in the league, trailing only Morgan Rielly of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Pfft no, I wouldn't invite someone over to perform medical care in my home for a sprained ankle. That's something you suffer through like an American. No, it was some dude advertising himself as a mobile dentist and I asked him to come take a look at my wisdom teeth. Guess he got a good look at my tonsils and liked what he saw. Can't blame him, my organs are spectacular. Anyway what happened with your whole back thing?
Wait, how the hell did that happen? What was even the problem to begin with? Don't tell me you'd fallen and sprained your ankle or some crazy thing like that.

Quote
The first in an fantasy duology inspired by West African folklore in which a grieving crown princess and a desperate refugee find themselves on a collision course to murder each other despite their growing attraction. For Malik, the Solstasia festival is a chance to escape his war-stricken home and start a new life with his sisters in the prosperous desert city of Ziran. But when a vengeful spirit abducts Malik’s younger sister, Nadia, as payment into the city, Malik strikes a fatal deal—kill Karina, Crown Princess of Ziran, for Nadia’s freedom. But Karina has deadly aspirations of her own. Her mother, the Sultana, has been assassinated; her court threatens mutiny; and Solstasia looms like a knife over her neck. Grief-stricken, Karina decides to resurrect her mother through ancient magic . . . requiring the beating heart of a king. And she knows just how to obtain one: by offering her hand in marriage to the victor of the Solstasia competition. When Malik rigs his way into the contest, they are set on a course to destroy each other. But as attraction flares between them and ancient evils stir, will they be able to see their tasks to the death? Brown is the first book in a new young adult fantasy duology inspired by West African folklore. I was so excited to dive into this book. I have been looking forward to it for months. This book takes a bit to get into at first because there is just so much world building and introduction to the characters and their lives in the beginning. I really liked every second of it. The folklore behind this story is amazing. I really found myself wanting to know more. I think the gods and creatures are very interesting and I look forward to reading the sequel. Let's talk about love. I feel like the "love" or "relationship" between Malik and Karina came across very insta-love. I really wish it had more depth to it. Don't get me wrong I think they would be great together, I just wish we had a bit more of a build up vs jumping right into that relationship. Let me also say that romance doesn't play a huge part in this book. I am not too worried about it either. When it came to the magic system, I do with is was explained a bit more. We get so much explanation of the characters and the world that I felt like the magic system was a bit lacking. It wasn't explained to the reader why magic wasn't common and it wasn't explained why some people randomly get magic. I definitely feel like the magic system is lacking and it leaves the reader with a lot of questions. \ Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I will be participating in a reread starting June 12 with a group of people. Why would I want to read a book I just finished? Sometimes when I liked an ARC so much, I like to reread a finished copy to see if anything changed. Other times, I just really want to reread the book. I look forward to diving into this book again ASAP. Definitely check out A Song of Wraiths and Ruin. Assignment 1
I have decided that I will use my own dataset from my own research in functional clinical outcomes after knee surgery. I am particularly interested in preoperative factors associated with depression or anxiety. I am not sure which variables I will use, so for now I will include all of the relevant variables in my personal codebook.
Research question: what is the relationship between a self-reported diagnosis of depression or anxiety and Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) domains?
Hypothesis: Patients with depression or anxiety would have worse preoperative pain, function, and general health status.
Literature review:
The Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) domains have been created by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to provide an assessment of patient-reported outcomes that is cost effective, time effective, and generalizable over a wide variety of clinical patients. However, the data collected through PROMIS in orthopedic patients is currently limited to foot, ankle, upper extremity, and spine injuries, with a lack of data regarding the use of PROMIS for patients undergoing knee surgery.
Collected data includes patient-reported demographics, treatment expectations, 6 PROMIS domains (Physical Function, Pain Interference, Fatigue, Social Satisfaction, Anxiety, Depression), Tegner Activity Scale, Marx Knee Activity Rating Scale (ARS), Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for pain, International Physical Activity ratings (IPAQ), International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) Subjective Knee Evaluation form, as well as information extracted from medical record.

In the open air of the bazaar the night felt stale now, cured by the salt that lay over the exchange with the woman within. The reading had not gone the way that Leander had hoped and he could see how bothered Morgan was by the entire ordeal. Guilt settled over his chest but he didn't let it burden him, instead, he was consigned to finding something that the two of them could take to that had less room to turn foul. Without lingering, Leander set an unspoken course towards the harbor, headed towards the gate to put Mercury's Bazaar behind them.
"People will do anything to make a buck these days." Dirty tricks weren't appreciated, but he wouldn't begrudge someone trying to get a jab in at the prince. Leander only wished Morgan hadn't been a causality in what the prince was just chalking up to a practical joke. "My mother would turn her cheek, the threat of a repercussion is enough to make our point." Leander took a beat as he considered Morgan's disposition, he didn't play the Game, but he wouldn't leave his friend's mood to fester. "This looks like it cut deep."
A halfhearted read was provided before the fake-oracle turned her attention back to the duplicate issue. Leander reached out to perform her task anyway and Morgan forced himself to sit in place. None of this was Leander's fault, Morgan only felt protective of his guide turned friend. If he was taken advantage of, he would live, but this was no way to treat a great warrior. A true witch with real ability who used his powers for real change and influence. This dishonorable, mortal charlatan should be completely ashamed for presenting as anything magic.
At last, Mordecai made a straight accusation. Voice dripping with true disappointment. The makings of a warning or threat. It was taking everything in Morgan to not tell the wench off, but that was not his duty or place. The last thing he wanted to do was cause trouble for Leander. The last thing he needed was to betray Tobias. Again. With a huff from his nostrils, Morgan came to stand and deserted the sham of a shop. He was out, but it would take a moment to cool from this seething.
Morgan lived among the common folk all his life and had yet to face a mortal with such hubris to fake magic. Pure disgrace. "Someone like that... should be punished." These words didn't come to him easily. Morgan was deeply insulted and that was uncommon. What was just witnessed made him sick.

This book was blessed with such a beautiful cover. I don’t totally know what I was expecting with this book, but I dove in with no expectations. The characters are so gorgeous. The descriptions were amazing. I felt like these characters were written so well. The story is told by four POVs.I thought it was pretty interesting having so many point of views. The romance was a forbidden love trope that seems to be coming back and of course there seems to be a semi-love triangle. I felt so bad for Xander. There didn’t seem to be much of a plot. Most of the book is waiting for events to take place and watching things unfold because we have so many points of views. I found that the story was a bit slow in the beginning but it does pick up. The writing style was beautiful. I thought that the author I’d d a great job making such a vivid world. I thought this book was pretty good. You should definitely check it out. Excerpt: “Game?” she asked. Her hands had stopped moving. They rested warmly in the hollow groove between his wings, palms half against his feathers and half against his back. Rafe stole another glance over his shoulder. She was too entranced to see anything but the visions dancing through her head, the visions he’d spun. An almost childlike wonder was alive in her innocent, yearning gaze, igniting a spark in his own chest that he hadn’t felt in a very long time. Not since his parents had died. Not since he’d grown up too soon. “We like to think of Taetanos as the god of fate, not of death,” Rafe said softly. The glaze in the girl's eyes disappeared as she looked into his. “We call life a game, because we each have our own wants, our own desires—but he sees everything, he knows everything, and he leads us down our destined path. We fight back sometimes, we make moves, and so does he. On and on it goes until, in the end, he wins, like he always does. But still, we keep playing. What other choice do we have?” Again, her fingers brushed his feathers, but she didn’t look away. He couldn’t, even if he’d wanted to. “What do you think this is?” She paused to swallow. “His move or yours?” His, he silently answered. Definitely his. Because Rafe ached to fly, to soar, to get out of the darkness and back to his brother, back to the role he was comfortable playing, back to the sidelines. But there was a weight in his chest keeping him there, keeping him still, keeping him so lost in the fire reflected in her eyes that he couldn’t find his way out even if he tried. For a moment, he thought he could hear his god laughing. Then he realized it wasn’t laughter, but the soft whistle of a bird call—a signal he recognized. His move. His life. His brother calling him back. Xander? Rafe tensed. His head whipped to the side, pulled by the noise growing louder, coming not from his imagination but from the other side of the darkness. He opened his mouth to call out in response, when a hand covered his lips and an arm slid around his throat, stronger and more ferocious than he’d expected. Rafe froze as the icy edge of a blade pressed into his skin, instantly recognizing the kiss of steel. “Be silent,” the girl ordered. “Don’t say a word.” About the Author: Kaitlyn Davis, a bestselling author with over a quarter of a million books sold, writes young adult fantasy novels under the name Kaitlyn Davis and contemporary romance novels under the name Kay Marie.
