hot take: crying YouTuber apology videos are manipulative
crying while apologizing to someone in real life is a thing that happens. it's an emotional reaction you may be unable to control
chosing to film, edit, and post a video of yourself crying cannot be done in the heat of the moment. you want people to see your tears and feel bad for you
there's really no excuse for it, IMO. if you can't make the video without crying, do a text apology instead
In Sept/Oct 2021, James Somerton was called out for stealing Hannibal fanart.
He made a poll, and reposted 4 Hannigram arts from various (uncredited) artists, and asked his followers what they thought was the best one to use for his upcoming video thumbnail.
The problem?
He didn't credit them, and never asked them beforehand posting their work.
When a number of Fannibals VERY POLITELY suggested that he not repost artwork, and asked him if he'd contacted the artists, he got extremely defensive and aggressive.
He went rage mode, was arguing, and blocking anyone who said it was a breach of etiquette. He threatened to not release the video at all, and apparently was rude to someone IRL?
He was upset about people calling him a thief and scammer, yet... he is one. As we now know.
I personally did not see a single death threat. He was blocking people for just saying "You should credit the artists, this isn't cool."
He posted THIS as a response.
This was his "apology'.
Yes, he uses his sick mother as an excuse. His sick mother that NO ONE even knew about. People were literally just saying "Hey, credit the artists, don't steal ppls art" and he immediately went into anger and defense and excuses.
After this, he deleted this non-apology, as well as the hannibal posts, and pretty much all evidence of what happened. He scrubbed it all really shortly afterwards. So believe me when I say this is a PATTERN with him.
I'm really not surprised his "apology" video went how it did. I just feel salty that he was GENUINELY AWFUL to multiple friends of mine, wiped all the evidence and kept scamming.
Anyways, I just don't want people to fall for his crocodile tears. I understand he probably DOES feel shitty. Because he was caught.
He is hoping everyone just feels sorry enough for him that they'll keep paying him, and he can just leave up his videos and patreon.
I'm convinced I have the worst vibes detector of all time. I used to be a fan of Creepshow Art, iilluminaughtii, and James Somerton- all high-profile creators who got their careers tanked because they're bad people. Given the absolutely huge number of creators I subscribe to it's not surprising that this has happened multiple times, but still.
Then again, when I expressed this sentiment in the past and kicked myself for not being more aware of the red flags, someone told me that means I just want to see the good in people and am more willing to forgive faults than others are. I think that's spot-on tbh; I'm a very naive and forgiving person, which has often been taken advantage of. But it's just my nature, I can't help it.
This will inevitably happen to me again, but I'd rather not beat myself up over not constantly being attuned to every red flag people give off.
What kind of a world do we live in now that not wanting to be photographed/filmed in public without permission is cause for argument. Like whatever happened to "consent matters".
In unrelated news, the CEO of MGA Entertainment deleted his Twitter in 2020 after bullying a creator whose likeness they allegedly plagiarized for a toy
Honestly, the Viv and Lackadaisy drama is a great reminder that the indie animation scene isn't so different from Hollywood.
Drama like this is one of the main reasons why I could never get into any indie animated shows, as there would always be some dumb behind the scenes nonsense that would ruin any enjoyment I got out of these shows.
It also doesn't help that a lot of these indie animation studios are run like high school cliques rather than professional studios.
Seriously, I dunno how anyone can deal with Viv's bullshit on a regular basis, nor do I understand why that Lackadisy crew member decided to make a big fuss over Viv not providing a donation link to the campaign on Twitter.
This is the type of behavior I expect from teenagers, not adults in their 20's and 30's.
And before anyone accuses me of siding with Viv, I think she handled the situation poorly by posting (and then deleting) that pity tweet instead of just talking things out with the Lackadaisy team in private.
I usually hate it when people try to "Both sides" everything, but this is one of those rare cases where both sides were in the wrong.
Not like it matters now, as the HH/HB fans and Lackadaisy fans are currently at each others' throats, arguing over which fandom is shittier.

Let's play a game. A real game.
You and me. I'll go first!
An elaborate synthesis of two fandoms. An old WIP driven to completion by recent happenings.
What exactly is criticism and what is the difference between criticism and bullying?
If you guys haven’t heard the latest internet drama, apparently Illymation decided to straight up false flag TBYS’s vid for “bullying” her…
AND SHE DIDN’T EVEN WATCH THE FUCKING VID.
Which is kinda stupid and pathetic all together.
So to answer the first question, according to Google’s dictionary of what Criticism is:
“The expression of disapproval of someone or something based on perceived faults or mistakes.”
Essentially, it is the term used to describe the calling out of mistakes people make (saying people what NOT to do basically).
For example-Critcism towards a fanfiction:
“I like this chapter but it has a few problems you gotta work on. First, the way the paragraphs are layered is not perfect and it is hard to read. There are also some grammar issues and the way it goes from past tense to present tense.”
THAT is criticism.
Criticism is honestly pretty much scary and upsetting, but criticism is here JUST to improve you and your work, not to emotionally hurt you at ALL. It is here to remind you what NOT to do. It isn’t scary at all once you use it to help you out on yourself and your work.
Now to answer the second question…
What is the actual difference between criticism and bullying?
Criticism is ADVISE for you and your work to improve and change and NOT make the same mistakes in the future!!
Bullying on the other hand is verbal and physical abuse from another person that may be or may not be related to you.
Example of bullying:
“You’re worthless!”
“You’re very fat like a pig!”
“The way you just do those things are so stupid!”
These are INSULTS. Not criticism.
So now you all know what exactly criticism is and what is the difference between it and bullying. It may be hard to know it, but it ISN’T really hard!
People gotta understand about it. They gotta expect some opinions and judgements from others who are LIKELY gonna give criticism. And they should UNDERSTAND ABOUT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CRITICISM AND BULLYING!!!!!!
Especially Illymation!!
Just the audacity of saying that TBYS’s video is straight up hurting her mentally and thinking it is bullying is pathetic.
ESPECIALLY WHEN SHE IS A GROWN ASS WOMAN.
She gotta grow up…
So as far as you all know..
CRITICISM IS NOT BULLYING!!!
Please just don’t be like Illymation (a man child who apparently can’t tell the difference between criticism and bullying).
Criticism is an important thing to have. Don’t abandon it and don’t take advantage of it. Use it for your own benefit. Again, it may be scary, but it isn’t once you look into it and use it as it can improve you and change your work/content.
Tommy unfollowing Dream on everything genuinely feels like the end of an era. I don’t understand how so many people are cheering that two people who were such good friends at one point seem like they’ll never speak to each other ever again.
But maybe it’s for reasons we just don’t know, maybe they simply drifted apart and it was easier to excommunicate. Maybe Dream was just so difficult to get in contact with behind the scenes that Tommy stopped bothering. If that’s the case, some context from them would be nice, but fine. If they were as close as they were in the past, surely it couldn’t have been that bad.
If Dream himself still has several friends that decide it’s worth still interacting with him, then I don’t see why anyone else shouldnt do the same.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go watch old vods and remind myself of a time before the community decided they would be the fucking friendship police.
having a negative opinion about brittany broski on tiktok is a death sentence and im currently being hunted and crucified for it !!! brittany called rachel zegler’s accent bad in tbosas and i said she is a performative activist anyway and people are COMING for me. ill let you know if i get doxxed bc of my silly opinion <3

Wait, James Somerton did WHAT??? Internet Historian did WHAT??? Man, I knew I should have watched that hbomberguy video when it got uploaded.
(if y'all are curious basically there's a HUGE scandal going on right now with plagiarism accusations. James Somerton, a queer essayist I subbed to and liked, is apparently a HUGE fucking plagiarist who also makes shit up. Internet Historian and a bunch of other people also got called out for plagiarism in a 4 hour video by hbomberguy)
You ever come across a blogger on Instagram whom you find cool and relatable so of course you follow them, and then one day out of the blue they post the most unhinged crap imaginable and you're like oh Jesus fuck now ok bye, can't hit the "unfollow" button hard enough, and swear on your heart that you'll never let your guard down again.
