Three of my favourite things when it comes to picture books are: elephants, silliness, and Michelle Robinson (not necessarily in that order). And I've never met anyone who didn't love Peter H. Reynolds's expressive drawings. So it's no surprise that the two of them created something wonderful with "What To Do if an Elephant Stands On Your Foot" (2012). With a hilarious, slightly harried invisible narrator struggling to give good advice to an obliviously cheerful but accident-prone child protagonist, you'll laugh your way from start to finish of this ridiculous jungle adventure. Definitely NOT recommended as a guide to safaris, but a GREAT storytime choice! ⚫ ⚫ ⚫ #noodlenutskidsbooks #whattodoifanelephantstandsonyourfoot #whattodo #michellerobinson #peterhreynolds #peterreynolds #elephants #elephantsofinstagram #safariguide #safari #readingisfun #kidsreading #readtokids #childrenslit #kidslitart #kidsbookswelove #invitationtoexplore #littlebookworms #classroombooks #getkidsreading #readaloudbooks #books4yourkids https://www.instagram.com/p/B4VjW-gnJhm/?igshid=xzns4rftqzgx

We have been learning all about bees today Through books and imaginative play we have talked about what bees are, what they do and why what they do is so important Edie and I had a lovely time acting out bees collecting pollen from the flowers and doing a waggle dance We acted out a meeting between our Queen bee and her workers We made honey in our honeycomb for the baby bees to eat We are going to be exploring the bee lifecycle and the role of bees on earth as we start our minibeast topic We always learn about minibeasts at this time of year and every year we delve a little deeper and expand our knowledge a little further With this #invitationtoplay I included four books, each suited to my different children and their reading abilities and style of books they enjoy The @quartokids Tales From Nature Bee Book was for Edie, the @usborne_books Why Do We Need Bees for Bee and the other two for Esther and William The Book of Bees is a brilliant book for older children jam packed with information and awesome illustrations Today is #worldbeeday a wonderful celebration of these misunderstood creatures whom we should all do more to protect #worldbeeday2019 #beeday #welovebees #bees #playinmay #welovespringplay #bookishplay #bringbooksalive #bookinspiredplay #invitationtoexplore #invitationtoread #invitationtoreadandplay #invitationtolearn #chatplayread #savetheearth #savethebees @plantoysofficial @lankakade Visit more: http://bit.ly/2WgYsXA

As our month of exploring imagination, innovation, and inspiration progresses (though really those are always things we look for here at Noodlenuts), I've been excited to share one of my new favourite storybooks from a longtime favourite author/illustrator. I've been a big fan of Kristina Stephenson's "Sir Charlie Stinky Socks" for many years. So when the always lovely @ivyslibrary was kind enough to send me a copy of Stephenson's latest, "Why Are There So Many Books About Bears?" (2019) I was absolutely delighted! This is a fabulously fun read-aloud for a good range of ages, and hits all the right notes from clever wordplay to hilarious opportunities for inference, and absolutely beautiful, boldly colourful illustrations, including a huge foldout spread in the middle. I highly recommend grabbing a copy and finding out, why ARE there so many books about bears?! We tend to assume that appropriate behaviour for storytime is to sit quietly, but for toddlers that's not always realistic. When I ran book-based storytelling programs, I used to love to start off storytime with "Doing the Animal Bop" (2005) by Jan Ormerod and Lindsey Gardiner. It's a great, upbeat, rhythmic romp that reads almost like a song (actually, it's available with a music CD!), and is fabulous to read while little ones stomp and waddle around the room like the animals, getting their wiggles out. After that silliness and movement, they were often ready to settle down and pay attention to a second story more easily. ⚫ This week the Read With River Book Club is exploring "action". All children need to feel loved and accepted. Period. 👗👗👗 But I think it's just as important that we, as adults, remember that some issues aren't just about politics and "personal beliefs". When we insist on gendering everything, we stifle EVERY child's imagination and creativity, not just those struggling with their identities. I have lots of pictures of myself with male friends, as toddlers in the '70s, dressed up gleefully in my mom's old maternity clothes, having the time of our lives. Those friends grew up to be cisgender, straight men ... and wonderful fathers. Kids need to be allowed to pretend and imagine! So today, for World Mental Health Day, I'm sharing Christine Baldacchino and Isabelle Malenfant's wonderful "Morris Micklewhite and the Tangerine Dress" (2014), about a little boy who loves to play in his favourite colourful, rustly dress from the dress-up box at school. The book does a beautiful job of addressing the negative reactions he gets, how they affect him, and ultimately how Morris reminds those around him that imagination shouldn't have limits or boundaries, and everyone deserves to enjoy the things that make them happy. ⚫ ⚫ #noodlenutskidsbooks #bookstagraminthe6ix #morrismicklewhiteandthetangerinedress #morrismicklewhite #christinebaldacchino #isabellemalenfant #worldsmentalhealthday #worldmentalhealthday #mentalhealthday #pretendplay #dressup #dressupplay #imaginativeplay #imagination #bullying #inclusion #nonbinarykids #transgenderkids #genderfluidkids #useyourimagination #stopbullying #creativeplay #readwithriver_discussions #letthembelittle #magicofchildhood #kidsbooks #learnathome #getcreativewith #raisingkindkids #invitationtoexplore https://www.instagram.com/p/B3cU3BWnnaB/?igshid=1dpjiajbpifkn

Getting creative with kids can often be an elaborate enterprise when parents really get going. Which is awesome. But also, sometimes simplicity has its own appeal. One of the books that has been loved by as many toddlers as I can recall is Ellen Stoll Walsh's "Mouse Paint" (1989). A simple tale of three white mice exploring primary colours and their combinations, it still manages to be playful and entertaining while kids learn. A great one for your littlest readers! ⚫ This week, the Read With River Book Club is exploring creativity! Join in with the hashtag #ReadWithRiver_create. Love discovering the best picture books?
