Third Second Time's a Charm

“So you’re asking me to be your best man?”

“Yes.”

Carlos nodded, even though he knew Iris couldn’t see him over the phone. He would’ve explained more, but he was eager to get her answer so he could stop thinking about it, stop dwelling on the fact that his father would no longer be filling that particular role at the wedding.

Unfortunately, Iris once again answered his inquiry with another question.

“And you’re asking me to be your best man NOW, only days before your wedding?”

“Um...yes?”

Carlos knew it wasn’t ideal, but having canceled their wedding immediately after his father’s funeral, they had very little time to put it all back together again, so everything was extremely last minute.

Though apparently that wasn’t what Iris was taking issue with.

“And you’re asking me to be your best man after replacing me as your best man with your dad only a week ago?”

Carlos gulped uncomfortably, feeling it again: that lump in his throat, that emptiness in his heart, that painful sense of loss. He was still finding it hard to accept that his father—his best man—would no longer be attending the wedding.

But Carlos knew that marrying TK now was the right thing to do.

Even if his dad wouldn’t be there.

Even if his mother would have to attend the ceremony alone.

Even if he was now forced to have this awkward conversation with his ex.

“Iris, I’m sorry that—“

“No, I totally get it,” she casually cut him off. “You felt guilty about calling him out about the Rangers, and asking him to be your best man was the obvious olive branch.”

Carlos started to interrupt, but Iris went on, “It totally made sense to me. After all, I know—possibly more than anyone—how fucked up your relationship with your dad is...or, I guess, was.”

Carlos felt his breath catch. It was the first time since the funeral that he’d heard his father referred to in the past tense, and the grief started to overwhelm him once again. It was one thing to think about his dad not attending the wedding, but it was quite another to fully accept that his father was truly gone, that he no longer existed on this planet. Carlos didn’t even bother to blink away the tears—after all, that’s why he’d opted to call instead of Facetime.

Not that Iris would have minded seeing him cry; she’d seen him do so often enough in the past.

On their own wedding night, in fact.

But that had been years ago.

Before Iris’s schizophrenia.

Before TK.

Before Carlos had fully embraced the man he was today.

A man who had finally gained his father’s acceptance, only to—

“And of course I’ll be your best man.”

Iris’s statement seemed to bring Carlos back to the present.

She continued, “Though I’m not going to give you the same acceptance speech I gave you last time, about what an honor it would be to serve as your best man, about how my standing up there with you will prove to everyone that you’re no longer ashamed of yourself OR your misbegotten past, about how proud I am that you finally love yourself enough to show the world who you truly are, marrying for love this time and not just because society or your family says it’s the thing to do.”

As Iris had gone on, Carlos couldn’t help but smile, both at the sentiments themselves and at their repetition. So when she finally reached the end, he couldn’t help but tease, “So...you ARE gonna give me that same acceptance speech.”

There was a momentary silence on the other end of the line before he heard Iris’s laughter ring out. “Yeah, I guess I am!”

But Carlos didn’t mind that she had just repeated the heart-felt words she’d said the first time when accepting the best man position—it only proved how much she really meant them.

And the fact that she was embracing this wedding—and his new life with TK—meant the world to him.

“So where’s it gonna be?” she asked.

Carlos frowned, surprised by the sudden topic change. “Where’s what gonna be?”

“The wedding, of course. I need to know where to show up in my fabulous ice blue tux.”

Carlos smiled. When they’d initially discussed her being his best man—after their annulment had officially gone through—she’d insisted that it felt wrong to wear black like the grooms. When Carlos had pointed out that they didn’t really have any other color scheme, Iris had announced she’d simply wear whatever color his mother would be wearing.

And now that his ma would be attending alone, he was relieved to know that at least she wouldn’t be alone in her color choice.

Carlos was curious, though, as to why Iris had already forgotten the venue.

“You should still have the address...unless you threw out the invitation.” Carlos suddenly wondered if others had done the same, if a reminder would now need to be sent out.

However, that wasn’t why Iris was asking.

“How did you manage to score that same place? I thought you canceled your wedding. Surely you weren’t able to get a spot again so quickly, especially when you were originally on a year-long waiting list.” She paused for a moment before suggesting, “Oh, did TK lie to you, saying he’d canceled while really holding onto the venue in the hopes that you’d change your mind?”

“No, nothing like that,” Carlos said, appalled at the suggestion. “TK actually put Owen in charge of canceling everything.”

Because TK himself had been too busy trying to hold me together, Carlos thought with a regretful sigh, feeling so guilty for what he’d put his fiancé through over these last few days.

Owen, too! The fire captain had really come through for him, preventing Carlos from making the biggest mistake of his life. It was clear that Carlos couldn’t ask for a better, more GENEROUS future suegro.

“Owen tried his best to cancel everything for us,” Carlos further explained, “but it was simply too late.”

“Oh, so that’s why the wedding’s back on,” Iris concluded. “Since everything was already paid for, you guys decided not to let all that money go to waste.”

“Not exactly.”

In fact, Owen hadn’t told either of the boys about the lost deposits, not wanting to cause them further worry. He’d kept it all a secret, intending to simply swallow the non-refundable costs himself as an additional wedding present for his “two sons”. Carlos and TK had only found out when they’d called him to announce that they were going to get married after all, even though their original plans had already been canceled.

They’d been shocked, therefore, to find out that the entire wedding they’d initially planned was still possible.

Everything except for Carlos’s best man.

But now Iris would be there instead. Carlos was so glad that the two of them had reconnected, that they’d reforged their friendship after all these years, and Carlos had the wedding to thank for that.

“Whatever the reason,” Iris began, “I’m glad you still get your venue—it looks way fancier than ours was,” Iris stated matter-of-factly. “And hopefully third second time’s a charm.”

“Third second time?” Carlos repeated, chuckling. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Well, it’s your second time planning your wedding at this venue, the second time you’ve asked me to be your best man, and the second time you’re getting married. People say that third time’s a charm, so let’s hope third second time’s a charm, too.”

Even in his grief, Iris could still make Carlos smile, just like she always had. Which was why he knew that Iris was the perfect person to help get him through the big day.

And hopefully she was right; hopefully third second time was indeed a charm!

while dp was the first series i really watched, bw was the first series i watched as it was airing. i remember being soooo hype when those first episodes came out and really enjoyed keeping up with it. i do have a soft spot and a lot of nostalgia for it and enjoyed it very much at the time. iris also means a lot to me as the first, prominent black, female anime character i'd really ever seen. like black and she likes dragons just like me?? im sold

A Word of Thanks

I hope you all enjoyed(?) LBAF 5 and 6. I really took some risks with this storyline, challenging myself with the world building and the characterizations. This was also a very different experience because this is a new gang and all the dynamics are fresh too.

I was so anxious that you wouldn’t be able to follow the plot or you won’t be interested in the new characters and dynamics. But as always, you surprise me and support me, and as always, I am oh so grateful.

LBAF will be back later this year. The next couple of installments of LBAF will be the last. There is a big possibility that LBAF 7 will be broken into two (because it’s huge) and then there will be the final collection of short stories before we conclude the series.

sure thing, so a few of my faves you might like include

I am in eskew: the horror podcast that has genuinely scared me the most. protagonist david ward is trapped in fucked up nightmare city eskew and tries making audio logs about his experiences to help cope, while, unbeknownst to him, and investigator on the outside tries to track him down. if you're looking for something with kinda similar vibes to tma statements, this also has an incredibly sad british man monologuing about The Horrors. one season; two voices; completed.

the silt verses: horror drama/fantasy, made by the same people as eskew. takes place in a fantasy world where sacrifice-hungry gods are the main tool of social and political control, follows two acolytes of an outlawed river god as they try to make a pilgrimage without annoying each other to the point of murder. if you really liked the entities-as-cults aspect of tma, this may be for you. two seasons done, one more on the way; multi cast.

red valley: sci fi with some mystery and horror flavors. warren godby has a new job in accounts at some big company and is told to track down info relating to a seed vault in scotland that they want to shut down, but when he starts turning up stuff about human cryonic trials he begins to get the idea that it's not seeds they're keeping in that vault. very good character writing and short enough that you can inhale it in a few days. content warnings are on the official website as opposed to the episode descriptions and I'd highly recommend paying attention to them. two seasons done, one more on the way; multi cast.

mirrors: sci fi, horror, mystery. in three different cities in three different centuries, three women start seeing the same ghost. they've never even heard of each other, but you can't help but notice patterns and parallels as you listen to their individual audio logs. slightly weird connection, but if you liked the movie arrival then this could be for you. three seasons; complete; multi cast but each voice is fairly isolated.

the strange case of starship iris: sci fi, dystopia. biologist violet liu is the only survivor after the ship of the research mission she was on explodes, and after she's taken in my the crew of a passing vessel and starts investigating, it starts looking more and more like the explosion wasn't an accident. it's hard to explain in words, but this is one of the most grounded and tangible feeling pieces of dystopian fiction I've ever come across, it has a very good grasp of how people would actually react to living in a situation like this. if you were really into the found family space pirate vibes of s3 of the penumbra, this may be up your alley. two seasons, another on the way; multi cast.

ok i couldn't help it i did the top 5 by ao3 stats and then i did some of my other favs i could think of :) this game has so many characters and the support system lends itself to a lot of ships imo

as we can see, i think these basically all make sense. i get why they're all so popular. my fave is ferdibert because there's something very indulgent in a pride and prejudice way about them, but also something really interesting there about growth? i feel like a black eagles run has a moment at some point where everyone looks at ferdinand and realizes huh, he's really grown up. i like that moment to torment hubert. not too many thoughts on the others - i love sylvix, edelgard and byleth are lesbians, i get how people get to dimitri/felix but i'm personally not into it, and there's a fandom version of dimitri/byleth that i just don't care for that is pretty widespread. i think the right author could bring me on board with them but i'm not a huge fan.

and here are some slightly rarer ones that i could think of off the top of my head!! because i thought of them you can probably tell that i like them :)

where to begin........... the thing about edelclaude is i truly think it doesn't make sense in the context of the games but it has such a hold on me. i read you flash a guarded look, my silver tongue returns to me and it opened up a new section of my brain reedroad invented writing with that series. now the thing about claudevain is.... it also does not make sense, but there's something about it... i think they could be very ruthless and successful together if the circumstances were right. also i think those two would be funny! dorobern gets 'makes sense' points based on them being in the same house and the fact that i think them not getting an ending slide together was a crime. go read violets, violets and you will understand. ashe/byleth... they are special and precious to me!! i love ashe!! literally all of wearwind's fe3h writing is good but i swear reading Tanaras did something to my brain chemistry forever. annette/felix is just super super cute to me, i love their supports and i love them together 😭 before the world was big made me love annette and Seeking Iris and Marigold should win a best picture oscar it's such a movie to me. sorry to turn this into fe3h fic rec time but that is simply What I Do - these all have various levels of spoilers so watch the tags i think? seeking iris and marigold is a modern-with-magic au though so i know that one is safe 👍

My favourite of my fics is... the rarely-read ColdWave neighbourfic, Mending Wall. There's a cute kid, lots of feels, and far more rambly plot than I was expecting when I started.

My fluffiest fic is... maybe the ColdFlash coffee shop meet-cute Better Latte Than Never - but the sequels are an angst fest (sorry, @blueelvewithwings!). Or there's this coldwestallen ficlet about pillows. (Literally) as fluffy as I get. It will never happen again.

My funniest fic is... the Retired Rogues series. In which retirement is not going so well for our ColdWave, till Mick takes things into his own hands. (I can't do funny, so I'm quite proud of these. I'm also quite proud to have been accused of Problematic Fic, for Mick plotting behind his partner's back. Sure, that's the most problematic thing about... ColdWave. 😁)

My saddest fic is... Rebuild, from deep in the depths of my angst-writing days. But it was hard to choose, for there are too many.

A fic I almost didn't post is... The Way Out (Mick Rory and self harm - read the content warnings). Write what you need to write, kids, even if involves stigma or you get ableism for it. Someone will be glad you did. Someone might be you.

The fic I had most fun writing is... Stealing Time & Saving Time. In which Len can't deal with his new powers and the boys can't deal with each other... until Iris steps in and bashes their heads together. (Can't have ColdWestAllen without the traditional Iris head-bashing.)

My favourite ship to write is... ColdWave. Still. Always. Gehenna is the ColdWave headcanon that I will be still talking about in the nursing home when I'm 90. The nurses will ask, of the roguish criminals they think I might have made up, "Did you know them when you were young, love?" and I will smile and nod.

My favourite femslash ship to write is... NewsHacker. They are perfect. The Mystery was fun to write. Zamaya are another fave.

My favourite OT3 to write is... You're expecting ColdWestAllen, aren't you? And you'd be right. But I have a soft spot for Rogue Canary too.

My favourite non-romantic pairing to write is... Len and Lisa. Love a sibling relationship that complicated. Many headcanons.

My favourite character to write is... Mick Rory. Still. Always. (You can tell because I've written 45 fics with him in.) Here's one.

My favourite neurodiversity fic is... Runs in the Family, with ADHD speedsters. I loved writing my ND Legends fics (like Meds) too.

The fic I remember writing most clearly is... Words. Inspired by a prompt/thought from @stungunmilly2 about autistic Mick, who struggles with spoken words but can't stop writing them. And then I couldn't stop writing it for three days. Writer!Mick is a mood.

My favourite 'written out of spite' fic is... Still Queer (Captain Canary)

My most-read fic is Can't Take That Away From Me (ColdFlash). I'm pretty happy to see it in first position, on balance. It was fun to write. (And I'm really sorry about still leaving the sequel unfinished)

My least-read fic is (Getting Past the) Pride and Prejudice - pt 2 of a NewsHacker series that is admittedly not very good, but still - Iris/Zari, okay?

The WIP I most regret not finishing is... Take The Keys (And Drive Forever). Lisa Snart-centric, would have been KillerGold if I'd got far enough with the Caitlin part, and it was going to be spooky.

My favourite gen fic is... Remember. Zari Tomaz's last moments in the timeline.

My crackiest fic is... (Here's To The) Tears and Beers and Wasted Years. ColdWestAllenWave with comedy therapy and time travel and being trapped and phobias and evil doppelgangers and flashbacks and future kids and feels. You're welcome.

Backstory: Hazel had a pretty ordinary life before Iris came along. A comfortable job in advertising that she was happy with, a cousin she loves immensely, and a huge extended family who have family get-togethers often. Hazel is known to be more eloquent with her words, while Nadia is a far more visual person and her art has taken her places. Hazel's also a huge romantic, which is what intrigued her about Eros in the first place.

Children: Iris and Hazel adopt two adorable girls soon after they get married. The first one is named Violet by Iris, the second one is adopted 2 years later. She is named Lavender, as an affectionate nod to Sloane who loves all things lavender-scented.

Joe is such a comfort character for me in a very diff way. he makes my daddy issues go brrrrr cos THIS is a dad. THE dad of all time. if i could pick any dad ever to have instead of mine i think i'd pick him.

I think he's so fucking funny first of all. it's my fave thing to put him in a fic and just. mess with him. im poking him with a stick. im watching his blood pressure go up. i'm making him deal with leonard snart and he's about to explode every time they're in a room together. i just. have so many affectionate feelings for him and his seething hatred of this man. and the earth 2 version where he's exactly like that but to BARRY? iconic. no notes. rip earth 2 joe you were a bitch and i miss you sm

THAT BEING SAID there are things about him that make me go "you should have faced more consequences for that. go sit in a corner and think about what you've done." namely bullying iris out of being a cop (acab etc. etc. but still shitty of him), the whole thing where he was like BARRY, WHY DIDN'T YOU ASK MY PERMISSION TO MARRY IRIS (and iris AGREED 🤮🤮🤮 who the fuck was in charge of the writers' room that day, i just wanna talk), the fact that he can be overbearing and controlling of his kids and very jaded in a lot of ways... idk he's a flawed character and every character needs some negative aspects so none of these things affect my love for him but sometimes i am shaking my head in disapproval...

as for canon. this is true of everything but MAN did they drop the ball with him towards the end... i get why they had joe quit ccpd given the political situation at the time and i support that 100% but first of all, having a Black character go "hey the police force in my city is inherently corrupt and i can no longer be complicit in its enforcement" (true and correct) while their white hero just does not acknowledge that corruption and continues to work for the same establishment completely uncritically was... perhaps not sending the message they intended... i mean it's honestly almost funny cos that is very much a reflection of the actual systems but. maybe they could have thought about that one a bit more...

and they really should have given joe something else to do cos he ended up sorta directionless after that. in fairness i know jesse l martin has back problems so i think them having him sitting down chilling at home as a stay at home dad was perhaps borne of necessity in a lot of ways but they defo could have done more interesting things with the character. im not OPPOSED to sahd joe but it does seem like a bit of a waste cos it would just be like. every episode joe shows up for a pep talk then goes back to being the full-time stay at home parent for a child we literally never see except one time when a window explodes in her face, which brings me to my NEXT point---

writing joe out with LITERALLY like 8 eps to go? stupid. again i respect that jesse l martin had HAD it with this show (tbf who hadnt by this point) and he wanted out, of course he had every right to do that, but purely based on the context of the show, i hate that they had him leave central city like that and move so far away when we were so close to the finish line. HAAATE it. the show was basically on life support from that point on. it was possibly worse than when we lost cisco. joe was the heart of it, man. it just wasn't the same :(

but yes I LOVE JOE, he is the only fictional dad i respect and i love ruining his life

Chapter 2 -- Third Second Time's a Charm

Chapter 2 summary: TK gives Iris a ride home from the rehearsal...and the conversation is a bit strained because Iris won't stop asking questions.

...

“Thanks for doing this.”

TK shrugged, briefly taking his eyes from the road to smile at Iris. “No problem. Happy to drive you home.”

In fact, TK was just plain happy. The rehearsal had gone smoothly, and by this time tomorrow, TK would be Mr. Carlos Reyes.

Or however the name thing was going to work.

“I didn’t mean thanks for driving me,” Iris corrected. “I meant thanks for marrying Carlos.”

TK chuckled. “I think I should be thanking Carlos instead.”

He still couldn’t believe someone as amazing as Carlos had actually agreed to marry him. It truly was a dream come true.

But that wasn’t what Iris was interested in at the moment.

“So tell me about the proposal.”

TK’s grin got even bigger. He couldn’t believe it had been less than three months since his late night musings had started this crazy ball rolling.

Though he realized he’d never really told anyone about how the actual proposal had gone down. They’d naturally announced their engagement to their friends and family, but no one had ever asked for details about the proposal itself.

“Well,” TK said, his mind going back to that fateful night, “I’d been thinking about making a will and—”

“You didn’t have a will?” Iris interrupted. “Was that because you didn’t want to contemplate death, after all your comas? Or was it more of a self-preservation superstition, that as long as you didn’t acknowledge you were going to die, you wouldn’t?”

“I have one now!” TK quickly defended. Why did Iris always throw him so off-balance? “Anyway, I’d been thinking about making one, and decided it would just be easiest if I left everything to my husband, so I woke up Carlos—“

“Oh, I didn’t mean that proposal,” Iris stated matter-of-factly. “I meant the other one.”

It took a moment for TK for realize what she was talking about.

He hadn’t really considered Carlos asking him if they could un-cancel the wedding a “proposal”, even though, come to think of it, he had gotten down on one knee.

TK smiled, momentarily lost in thought, until Iris prompted, “So what happened?”

“Well,” TK began again, the unhappy memories of what had happened beforehand starting to encroach, “I was home alone, waiting. My dad had called, so I knew that he’d gotten there in time, but I was still worried about what would happen.”

Which was why he’d been watching Lou II. The bearded dragon had been a symbol of how much Carlos cared for him, but what did it mean now that TK had ratted out Carlos to Owen? Would Carlos be willing to forgive TK? Or would Lou II become a child of divorce before his parents were even married?

TK sighed before continuing, “So anyway, finally Carlos made it home and—“

“No, not that proposal either,” Iris interrupted. “I meant the other one.”

“What?! What other one?” What was she even talking about?

“The one in New York.”

TK felt a jolt and turned to stare at Iris, shocked and appalled that she somehow knew, that she had somehow figured out about Alex.

“That was a red light.” Iris calmly pointed out,

“What?! Shit!” TK frantically slammed on the brakes mid-intersection, glancing up to see that the traffic light now directly above them was, indeed, red. Luckily, no other cars were around, so no damage had been done.

As he cautiously continued through the intersection, Iris went on, “Carlos said your break-up in New York was what caused your relapse, where you almost died—that was your first coma, right?—so I’m assuming it was a proposal gone wrong...or else you’re even more of a drama queen than I thought. So tell me about it.”

TK didn’t know what to say. He kind of wanted to defend the drama queen comment, but since he had just run a red light over her questioning, perhaps she wasn’t wrong.

But he hadn’t thought about his proposal to Alex in ages because it was the complete opposite to what had happened with Carlos. With Alex, it had all been about the grand gestures—a public proposal, a fancy restaurant, an expensive ring tucked in his pocket—whereas with Carlos it had just been about wanting share his heart, wanting to share his life, and wanting to do so immediately, in the middle of the night, with no planning or preparation.

Because TK was certain he was meant to be with Carlos. The two were soulmates—even Carlos had used the phrase recently—and once TK realized they should make it official, he felt like there wasn’t a moment to lose.

Whereas, looking back, he must’ve known, deep down, that he and Alex weren’t right together. Pulling away, acting weird, spending all his time at spin class—TK had proposed to bring Alex back, not to commit his heart and soul for the rest of his life.

Whereas Carlos WAS TK’s life. And soon their lives would be officially—in the eyes of God and the law—each other’s.

So now was NOT the time to be telling Iris about the superficial proposal that felt like a lifetime ago.

Especially because he’d never even told Carlos.

“Please don’t tell Carlos,” he said quietly to Iris. “He doesn’t even know I proposed to Alex.” He only knew that there had been a bad break-up—nuclear bad—which had led to TK’s relapse.

“Of course not,” Iris replied. “I’m not about to tell him he’s your second choice.”

“Second choice?! No! That’s not—Alex didn’t mean—he obviously wasn’t the one.”

It was so clear to TK now. No wonder his dad had been wary about his proposal plans.

“But you proposed to him,” Iris stated matter-of-factly. “He must’ve meant something to you. Or do you just randomly go around proposing to the wrong people?”

TK began to sputter again, not knowing how to defend himself, when Iris calmly pointed out, “Red light.”

This time TK slammed on the brakes in time, causing the car to skid past the crosswalk but stop before it entered the intersection.

Iris gave him a look, saying, “You get flustered pretty easily, don’t you? I’d think that would be a bad thing for a paramedic...or a fire fighter.”

“I only get flustered around you!” Iris seemed to mess with his head the way no one else ever had.

“Is that because you’re insecure? Because you don’t think you’re good enough for Carlos?”

Hearing someone else voice his fear aloud was more than a little upsetting.

Because yet, TK had always feared that he wasn’t good enough for Carlos. It was clear from that moment back at the police station after the brawl, Carlos calling him by his full name, looking horrified as TK talked about his relapse. Obviously Carlos had his shit together whereas TK was—as Iris had so bluntly pointed out—a hot mess.

So yes, TK was definitely not good enough for Carlos.

And it seemed pretty clear Iris agreed with his assessment.

“Is that’s what you think?”

Iris shrugged. “Why would I think that?”

“I don’t know!” TK snapped defensively. “But every time we’re together, I feel like I’m being...interrogated...like a serial murderer.”

“Are you a serial murderer?”

“What?! No! But that—that right there!—that is what I’m talking about! All these questions!”

TK could feel his heart pounding a mile a minute, feeling like he was being grilled.

Iris, however, seemed as calm as usual as she explained, “I’m just trying to get to know you. How else am I to do that?”

“I don’t know! Just...don’t bombard me with non-stop questions that I can’t answer.”

Iris gave him a curious look. “Why can’t you answer them?”

“Stop!”

TK literally felt like his head was going to explode!

Though if he’d expressed that thought aloud, Iris certainly would’ve pointed out he was using the word wrong again!

The car was silent for a few moments. Finally, Iris asked, “Would you like to ask ME questions instead?”

“Not particularly.” He wouldn’t even know what to ask.

“You’re alone with your soon-to-be husband’s former wife—and high school bestie—and you have nothing you want to ask?”

Oh. Right!

When she put it like that...

“So how did you guys meet anyway?” He remembered Carlos saying that she was a few years older, so he wondered if they’d met in some extra curricular activity or...

“Isn’t that a little off-topic?”

Off-topic?! There WAS no topic, other than Iris cross-examining him about his proposals.

Oh!

Iris and Carlos had been married, but TK had never thought to ask how they’d gotten together. Had Carlos done a traditional proposal? And had TK’s late-night offer not lived up to his boyfriend’s expectations? Now TK was curious.

“So how did Carlos propose to you?”

“Who said that he did?”

TK gave a frustrated sigh, asking, “Okay, then how did YOU propose to Carlos?”

Iris shrugged, pointing out, “I never said I did either.”

“Uggh!” TK grumbled, slamming the heel of his hand against the steering wheel. “Then...just tell me how you two decided to get married.”

“It wasn’t really planned,” Iris began. “We were at Luisa’s wedding. He’d brought me along—we did everything together back then—and, as always, everyone assumed I was his date.”

While today’s Carlos would’ve laughed this off, TK realized it must have been hard for young Carlos, everyone around him just assuming he was straight, his own parents blindly ignoring the truth. It must have been a difficult world to navigate...and TK was suddenly grateful that Carlos had had Iris there at his side to support him.

“We were out on the dance floor,” Iris continued, “and Carlos was lamenting that he’d never seen his dad look so happy before, so I simply pointed out that weddings did that to people. So later that night, after we’d both had way too much champagne, he asked if I really thought that a wedding was all it would take to please his dad, and I said we’d never know if we didn’t try.”

TK felt a stab in his heart. It was so sad to think of Carlos merely getting married just to please his dad, to get his father’s approval.

But it was even sadder to think that Gabriel would not even get to see Carlos marry someone he truly loved.

Though clearly Carlos had loved Iris, just not like that. She’d been there during the toughest part of his life, she’d gotten him through.

No wonder Carlos wanted her to be his best man.

“Thanks,” TK said. “For...you know...being there. Giving him what he needed.”

Iris smiled across the car at TK, replying, “Hey, what are annulments for?”

TK chuckled. He was relieved that the annulment had gone through in time, that Iris hadn’t caused a stink about ending their marriage, that she now seemed to fully support Carlos wedding TK.

Even if she did ask too many questions.

Though TK realized that maybe talking to Iris wasn’t such a bad thing. She knew a lot about Carlos, things Carlos had never shared but were probably important to know. And she was going to be around a lot these next 24 hours, so perhaps TK should be thinking of all the questions he could ask her.

Important things...like who had Carlos’s celebrity crushes been back in high school?

iris!! hello!!! i actually wrote the reply to this out the day you sent me it and then thought i'd posted it but just found it in my drafts so i'm so sorry for being such a mess!! but i'm finally here!

the character everyone gets wrong

harry welsh... sorry i've already ranted about this today (well, it was that day when i was originally writing this but now it's been like a week), so i'll just direct you over there instead of doing it all over again.. but i also feel like sometimes people get burgie really wrong as well. he's sometimes written/headcanoned as this responsible 'straight-man' to snafu's chaotic antics and sledge's angst, when it's just not really what he is. and i mean straight-man as in the comedy trope, not the sexuality. i feel like people make him out to be way more 'boring' than he actually is. yeah, he has to take on more responsibility than most of the others bc of his role, but he also let's snafu act like a mean little bitch to everyone and smiles whilst he watches on in silence. he's a partner in crime, not an intervention. he's also tired. you can tell he wasn't prepared for everything he'd have to do, but he does it because he has to, and because weirdly, he's mostly good at it. in a winging-it kind of way. he somehow manages to be what the boys need most of the time, even though it's pretty clear he's fucking Stressed too. he's good at observing from a close distance and making himself known when he needs to, but he's got this quiet chaos running through him under the surface, people are just too distracted by snafu most of the time to see it. idk, i just think he's a lot more interesting than some of the headcanons i see.

but i've also seen some really interesting and amazing headcanons about him so don't think i think everyone in the fandom gets him wrong or anything, it's not even widespread

a compelling argument for why your fave would never top or bottom

ok so i wrote a pretty long answer to this originally but then decided to just keep it simple instead. i honestly don't really think you can argue that someone will never top or bottom. most people have preferences toward one, a lot don't mind either way, but the thing is, even if someone has a preference, unless they explicitly say it out loud you really can't argue for sure that they would never. so honestly, most of them i wouldn't be able to argue for only ever doing one. like a few i can definitely say would lean one way or the other, but there are always circumstances with characters and their different dynamics where someone could do the opposite. i think it's more accurate to say that readers have a preference for whether they enjoy reading their fave top or bottom and a lot of that is bc of their own preferences and feelings about top/bottom dynamics.

It’s kinda of a hard question. I do like a lot of my characters, but I also feel like a lot of my characters aren’t fully developed/explored.

For favorites, I would have to say female Pig Lord, Jane Doe, Iris (Ruby), Neptune, and Aro are my favorite characters.

For least favorite characters male Pig Lord, and Charlie (Bow).

CT is growing on me, but they had a very long and challenging character development journey to get to where they are now.

I know I have several other characters, but the rest are definitely natural feelings. I would have loved to have gone into more detail as to why I like the set of characters that I do like and why I don’t like the set of characters that I don’t like, but that would be a rather long post. I mean it took almost a month to tell my friend about my characters and the different universes through text. I’m really hoping to try writing another character down in the future, and I’m also happy to talk/answer any questions about any characters.

1: sexuality headcanon

Bisexual (though I'll write him as whatever fits the story best when writing fanfic, make it schrodinger's sexuality, I don't know until the plot demands it)

Westhawne or Westhallen - He loves Iris so much in canon it's hard not to be charmed by the Eddie/Iris ship, but I'm a sucker for resolving love triangles by just... closing the triangle, so Barry/Eddie/Iris is probably the overall winner with me

3: brotp

Eddie & Barry - much as I do like shipping them romantically, the platonic broship is really wonderful too

4: notp

I don't know if there's any Joe/Eddie or Eobard/Eddie out there and I'm afraid to look, but if those ships exist I'm going to politely never interact with them or acknowledge their existence beyond hoping they don't.

5: first headcanon that pops into my head

Eddie's never had a pet, but he really wants one. So when he settles into life with Barry and Iris and baby Nora post-show, he's super excited to meet McSnurtle the Turtle and learn all about the care and feeding of pet turtles and starts referring to McSnurtle as their scale-baby. Since... you know... no fur.

Barry and Iris find this incredibly adorable of him.

6: favorite line from this character

When Eddie's on pain killers and he sees Barry being a bit Flash-y and then gets reminded that he's high right now.

"Did you guys see that?" "You're just high, partner." "Right, I forgot."

He laughs after and probably forgets the whole thing afterwards, but it's really just such a cute moment. Especially after he was so pleased to see Barry show up with flowers for him.

7: one way in which I relate to this character

Eddie is definitely the sort of person who will go out super late or drive somewhere out of his way to help a friend and I try to be that kind of person to my friends too.

8: thing that gives me second hand embarrassment about this character

They brought him back just to add him to the list of people of have treated Iris more like a prize to win than a person. I'm still so pissed off at the show for bringing Eddie back for the finale only to turn him into the final villain and ignore the fact that he'd died specifically so Iris could have her own life. I know he's being gaslit by the NSF at the time but it is still sooo painful to watch because it's so wildly out of character no matter what excuses they make.

That said, for S1 Eddie only? Watching him try to lie to Iris is hilariously bad, poor baby just cannot do it.

As far as the classics go, SCP-231 is a masterclass in creating fear through implication. Mind the trigger warnings at the beginning though.

I love the concept for SCP-105: Iris because she's just a normal woman who can do one weird thing with one particular camera, but she gets embroiled in so many problems thanks to the Foundation refusing to leave well enough alone, essentially. Iris is a good character, she doesn't see as much use in more recent SCPs as she should imo.

SCP-1730: What Happened to Site 13? Is one of the early long-form SCPs, and it's very compelling.

SCP-2316: Field Trip is a great early example of just how creative SCP articles can be, and it will have you saying "I do not recognize the bodies in the water." randomly throughout your day.

Really anything by DJ Kaktus is a good read. SCP-6666: The Demon Hector and the Dread Titania is so far my favorite entry in the expanding Kaktusverse.

back in mi.zuki route and it feels so good .....and hurts unbelievably bad . why it's not canon that date didn't cure her aphonia i really am...not sure why we didn't get date-sagan canonly i mean people can and should ship whatever they want as long as it isn't a big red flag, crossover ships are great! in terms of 'as long as it isn't' you know what i mean, but.... this girl has suffered beyond fathoming and while i do genuinely some parts of a.ini, the found family of d.ate, miz.uki and ai.ba and of course, hopes by storyline, of hitomi and iris joining in, since it really did seem headed that way. was always what i hoped i'd get in ai.ni..ha...ugh. like, i wanted miz.uki and hitomi in ai.ni hanging out! i wanted that so bad like why i wanted to know how hit.omi felt about shoko...her situation before being adopted! ughghgh

also i really just am not having d.ate disappear three months after legally adopting miz.uki as his daughter? like uh??? she had him as an adoptive dad for three months he's a disaster but he is a hell of a lot more complex in ai.tsf than ai.ni because it was character based / plot based second written tightly and incredibly, honestly 999 is now my second fave of uchikoshi's now, but like, if i'm writing 18 year old m.izuki just know she's mentioning her very not missing and cringe and disastrous adoptive father d.ate who did not fall victim to the explosion route.

eventually i'll write my bio and verses so you know what i kept and didn't keep but, the og game is always the best for me, even if i love exploring teen mi.zuki and how she is pretty likely the strongest person on the planet earth now. yikes to growing up another year it'll get worse. but we got pewter dancing??? and mi.zuki's teenage glow up is fantastic the designs are great and i love kizzy i think she's precious. also amame my beloved??? i wonder what my mutuals think of her 'role' in ai.ni...
