Unfun Fact: In Ireland, there is a far-right party called the National Party. They're homophobic, islamophobic, antisemitic, racist assholes. They were founded in 2016, and have never won a seat at any level of government in any election.
Fun Fact: Guess who just got robbed?
According to party leader/founder Justin Barrett (who's attended neo-Nazi rallies in Germany and Italy), a significant amount of the party's funds were stolen by party co-founder/vice president James Reynolds (known Mussolini admirer) and national organizer Paul Conroy (once pictured literally goose-stepping at a party meeting).
It gets even funnier though: the funds that were allegedly stolen?
They were in gold bars.
Yeah, Barrett claims they kept their funds in gold bars, believing it would be protected in the case of the collapse of fiat currency. They kept it in a safe.
They kept their party's funds in gold bars in a safe.
And it gets better: Gardaí (Irish Police) have responded to the claims, and are currently investigating... whether a crime has been committed.
See, they've found the gold... but have not yet established that the gold was stolen. They're investigating the ownership of the gold, and who had the authority to move it.
Might have helped them if they'd supplied records of their accounts to the Standards in Public Office Commission, as legally required of all political parties, which they failed to do last year.
Of course, this does raise the question: how does a political party, with no elected members, and received 0.2% of the vote last election... have €400,000 in gold bars?

"Alisha Weir and the wider cast of the new film 'Abigail' have paid tribute to their co-star Angus Cloud, the Irish American actor who passed away just weeks after filming wrapped.
'Every single cast member was so incredible, and Angus brought so much joy to the set,' Dublin native Weir, 14, told the PA last night, April 17, at the Los Angeles premiere of 'Abigail,' in which she stars.
'Every single day he would make everybody smile and I’m so so honoured and so grateful, not just to have worked with him, but to have known such a beautiful person who is so amazing and beautiful inside and out.
'He shared that with every single person on the cast.'
Cloud, whose father was from Co Meath, died on July 31 at the age of 25. The Alameda County Coroner later said he died of acute intoxication following an accidental overdose.
Full name is Conor Angus Cloud Hickey, the actor previously said that he was preparing to move to Ireland before he was scouted to feature as Fezco in HBO's hit series 'Euphoria.'
In 'Abigail,' Cloud plays a kidnapper, appearing alongside 'Scream' star Melissa Barrera, 'Downton Abbey's' Dan Stevens, 'Big Little Lies' actress Kathryn Newton, and 'X-Men' star Kevin Durand.
Speaking on the red carpet on Wednesday evening, Stevens described Cloud as 'unique,' adding that he had never met anyone like him.
'He was like all of our little brothers on set, and we loved him very much, and we miss him very much,' Stevens said.
Stevens added that 'Abigail,' which was filmed in Ireland, features a tribute to Cloud at the end of the movie.
'I love that this film has a tribute to him at the end, and he would have loved this; he would’ve laughed his arse off,' Stevens told reporters.
Durand, meanwhile, said everyone spoke of 'how good they felt' when they talked to Cloud on set.
'It was just so nice to meet someone who was just so real,' Durand said on Wednesday.
'He wasn’t concerned with being famous; he wanted to be a good person. We all loved him very much and are all very proud of what he did in this film. I hope he's really happy with is.'

Via IWW Ireland:
Several hundred people from across Derry and Donegal rallied at Derry's Free Derry Wall this afternoon, the site of countless social justice demonstrations for decades. The solidarity action was called by the local Derry solidarity Palestine group, Derry IPSC, formed to show support and awareness on developments in Palestine. Today's solidarity actions was one of the largest show of solidarity with the people of Palestine since the latest war on Gaza by the Israeli regime.

in case people don't know, I'm Irish so I just find it weird how an Irish clothes store in IRELAND wouldn't allow a jumper with Irish words allowed on it. Just kinda...unusual to me, I guess. At least they apologised.

From the Roots – behind Irish environmental news stories
The goal of From the Roots as a podcast is to demystify the science and figures in Irish environmental news stories and to give the necessary background for you to understand them… in fifteen minutes or less, or your money back.
There are so many breaking environmental news stories every day and limited space, even for journalists who are interesting in factual reporting, to give people the background. A lot of conversations by activists can turn into jargon, inaccessible for newcomers, quite quickly.

Asylum seekers scared to live on Dublin’s streets
Over 750 asylum seekers have been left homeless in Ireland after the government announced a shortage of accommodation for those seeking refugee status in early December, the BBC reports.
There were 13,000 asylum applications in Ireland in 2023, five times more than in 2019, the Department of Integration reported.
“Despite intensive efforts to source emergency accommodation, the department is currently not in a position to provide accommodation to all international protection applicants due to the severe shortage.”
Ireland currently hosts over 101,585 people between refugees from Ukraine and applicants for International Protection (IP). This includes over 74,955 Ukrainians approaching the state in search of accommodation. However, those fleeing war in Ukraine are treated differently by Ireland than those seeking asylum from other countries.

At 1am on the 3rd of June, 1944, Maureen Flavin woke up on the morning of her 21st birthday, and as part of her job as a post office clerk she went and checked the meteorlogical station at the nearby lighthouse.
Readings showed a slight drop in pressure, a 7mph wind from the southwest, and a light drizzle. Good indications of an inbound storm.
After consulting with another clerk, Ted Sweeney (her later husband), she sent the information via telegraph to Dublin.
Later hourly readings between 2-7am, and then reports from other stations, confirmed the storm was well on it's way.
Dublin, as part of an agreement made in 1939, promptly sent this information on to London, who then proceeded to hand it over to Allied Command and General Dwight D. Eisenhower.
At 11am, Blacksod Post Office received a direct call from London, requesting that they double-check their readings, which they confirmed. It wasn't until the 1950s that Maureen learned that was an officer from Allied Command.
The decision was made: based on windspeed and direction, the storm would be over Normandy on June 5th, but blow over by the morning of June 6th.
With two days advanced knowledge, D-Day was able to be postponed 24hrs, so as troops would not be landing into a storm, and air support wouldn't be hampered by cloud cover.
Maureen Sweeney did her job, and in the process helped changed the fate of a continent. May she rest in peace.
