Review: Iron Man: Crash
Tumblr media
Fans of the Iron Man Epic Collections are used to filler, but Iron Man: Crash might just be the most filler-iest of filler. It serves no real purpose, and, as far as I can tell, they created it just because they could.
I guess, on paper, the idea of a computer-generated graphic novel (insert AI art joke here) is interesting, but, in practice, it looks awful. I just cannot imagine any reader in 1987 looking at the work of John Byrne, Walt Simonson, Sal Buscema, John Romita Jr., Bill Sienkiewiczart or any of the other great comics artists in the 1980’s and then looking at this, and thinking, “Yeah, I like the computer stuff better.”
Tumblr media
Additionally, I assume the difficulty of programming computer-generated art severely limited what Mike Saenz was able to do with the story. At least, I hope that’s the explanation, because the story is basically nothing. Seriously, Iron Man: Crash is so decompressed that it would make Brian Michael Bendis blush. It’s amazing how little happens in 70 pages. It literally takes Tony Stark 3 full pages to suit up! Almost nothing happens in the story, neither Tony nor the villains is well developed, and even the action is very light. The whole thing is just an exercise in spinning its wheels.
On the one hand, I’ve always been a proponent of the “collect everything” philosophy for the Epic line, but, Iron Man: Crash really tests my commitment to that mentality. The Michelinie/Layton run on Iron Man is one of my all-time favorite runs, and it’s a shame that one of their Epic Collections is marred by such a waste of pages. I don’t like to be negative, but I honestly can’t think of a single positive thing to say about it.

Crash and Burn 5
Tumblr media
My warnings are not exhaustive but be aware this is a dark fic and may include potentially triggering topics. Please use your common sense when consuming content. I am not responsible for your decisions.
Character: Tony Stark
Summary: a powerful man comes crashing into your life. Literally.
As usual, I would appreciate any and all feedback. I’m happy to once more go on this adventure with all of you! Thank you in advance for your comments and for reblogging ❤️
Tumblr media
You sit on the back porch, reading a book as you avoid the dingy tabacco laden walls inside. After claiming a couple slices of pizza, you quickly evacuated, your mom latched onto your guest like gum beneath a diner table. You're happy enough to be alone.
You just want it all done with. You want to be done with him.
Your mom just needs to do one thing. Get the trailer and be done with the man overdosing on his own ego. She's never been on to let things go, especially nothing like this.
The screen door opens and closes. You stay as you are.
“Your chariot awaits, princess,” Tony declares as he approaches. You look up as he stands behind you.
“What do you mean?” You close the book and stand, not liking how his pant leg touches your arm. You face him as his mouth slants, the silver in his goatee catching the dimming sunlight.
“Me. Gonna take you for another ride.” He rests his hand on the wooden railing as you stand on the step below.
“No,” you say bluntly. “I have work tomorrow so I need to go get ready for bed.”
“What’s the matter? If you don’t like pepperoni, you could’ve said something,” he tilts his head. "I thought you had extensive experience with meat... workong in a deli and all."
“Really? You know this isn’t about the pizza,” you sneer.
“I know what it’s about as well as you.” He steps closer and looks down at you. “It’s this.”
He swirls his finger between you.
You narrow your eyes and grimace. “This... what?”
“Sexual tension. It’s like a noose, isn’t it? I’m close to gagging.”
You glare back at him, “you really believe every woman on earth wants you?”
“I know it so let's stop fucking around just get to the fucking.” He winks.
You laugh. A snort then a scoff then a guffaw. “Wow, what a line. Look you can buy us pizza and replace what you owe us but I'm nor impressed. You city people think we're all just a bunch of trailer trash and maybe we are, doesn't mean we wanna be like you.”
“Oh, but you definitely want me,” he intones.
You sigh, “I want to go to my room and never see you again.”
“I like that. The hard-to-get thing always gets me going.” He gets closer and you lean away.
“The hard to stand thing doesn't do it for me,” you retort. “Thanks for doing the bare minimum but I'm over it. Either we get what you destroyed or you go back and laugh at your little mistake with your rich buddies.”
“You're sounding bitter, sweetheart. Why don't you let me give you some sugar?” He reaches for you and you dodge his hand.
“Please, quit that. I told you, I am not into it.”
“You aren't? Well your mom sure is. Yeah, we made quite the deal. She's going to get her trailer and an empty nest.” He puts his hands out in nonchalance, “what can I say? I'm a great negotiator.”
“What–”
“Well, I mean you're not going anywhere here. Working at a deli and for what? I told her, you don't gotta be stuck here. Eating off her table, living under her roof. You're an adult.” He crosses his arms and smirks.
Yep, that sounds like your mom. She's reminded you a billion times how you've burdened her with your existence, just as your grandmother does to her. And he plucked on that string until he hit a harmony.
“What did you do?” You ask.
“You make it sound like I did something wrong. Sweetheart, I'm doing you a favour. I'm getting you out of this pit. A girl like you, you can't hope for better because I'll tell you something, there's nothing out there better than Tony Stark.”
He preens in victory. You squint and clap the book against your leg.
“Come on, everyone should see New York at least once,” he tries to tap your nose and you evade him, but not entirely. Instead, he hits your chest and you feel a sudden constriction across it.
Your ripped up by your chest as metal expands and twists around your torso. You shriek as you fly upwards, encased in a cocoon the blocks out the wind. The propulsion of the suit has you disoriented and rattling.
You hear a whir and look over to see the marquee red and gold of the iconic Iron Man. Tony grabs you, your gauntlet caught against his like a magnet, and he zooms off onto sky, dragging you with him. You cry out as you can do nothing but flail.
“Relax, sweetheart,” he voice comes through the speakers built into the helmet, “you don't wanna pass out in this thing. Trust me.”
“What the hellllllll!” You holler.
“Just wait till you see that New York skyline,” he chortles.
Your disbelief paralyses you. How can he do this? Well, you can't stop him. He's been enabled his whole life and you've just become another pawn to his games.

So, Valkyrie way quicker to help Tony then Thor and while that could be chopped up to What If...? typical speed running the plot and pushing the character where they want them to be, and it is somewhat that, but I'll actually defend this and say I don't think it breaks character for Valkyrie.
In Ragnarok Valkyrie already bitter towards Asgard throne and all Thor does is demand from her and judge her. Tony on the other hand is meeting Valkyrie with understanding.
"My guess, and I'm in no way speaking from personal experience. You want the thrill to feel alive, if only for a moment. So, you can forget whatever mistake has you chasing that demon in a bottle."
Also, it's not as if Val has any love for the way Sakaar is. She's just found a way to survive in a way that she mostly benefits. So, when Tony purposes to take down the Grandmaster it really more of a case of "Ehhh, why not?" In contrast to Thor asking her to go back and face someone she lost everything to. So, I do not think it's out of character or even forced that Valkyrie decides to help Tony.

Pecco and Pedro are probably the people who more than anyone else want to beat Marc. Pecco because he is forced to do it for a matter of survival, his bet next year is to be able to win against Marc with the same bike. Pedro wants to win the first world championship with Marc in MotoGP, even better if he wins it against him, because of course that’s what he wants. I MotoGP your teammate is your first enemy, as surreal as it is, it would be more likely to see Pecco and Pedro helping each other (which would be unlikely anyway because they aren’t the type of people who do that) than one of them helping their teammate , especially if it's Marc. If anything Marc and Pecco have to be intelligent enough to at least not take each other out Portimao style, because in that case there will be someone behind them ready to bite
so I'm going to jump in right away by saying, I know this ask acknowledges it's unlikely but, yeah, pedro and pecco will not be helping each other in any meaningful sense - because they are both serious challengers to each other and they know it. sometimes, riders can be known to help non-team members in fairly small low-key ways (see in this post valentino accusing marc of deliberately towing ducati riders to get them ahead of his actual rivals in brno 2014). for both pecco and pedro, marc is definitely the bigger focus, but they are both perfectly aware of the danger the other poses, and will not be inclined to treat each other as anything other than an active threat
that being said! of course pecco has already nicely demonstrated this season that he does approach his marc fights differently than he does those with other riders (which is broadly the correct and smart thing to do, even if the specifics can be critiqued). portimao even gave us the direct comparison between pecco/pedro and pecco/marc! part of it, yes, will just be an element of self-preservation - marc is now back to being a major roadblock for winning any future championships, and he'll be in pecco's house so will of course require... extra attention. apart from that, it absolutely would be the most meaningful way pecco could win a championship, by beating the famous marc marquez on equal machinery... nobody has done that before, and it would instantly dispel any remaining doubts about pecco's ability and cement his legacy as one of the greats of the sport. he wants to beat marc so badly because marc is one of the two riders he's always been chasing... and marc's absence has left all the young pretenders in this odd place where they've taken the crown but don't quite believe it's theirs yet. (just to say this again, I personally don't share the view that marc's absence diminishes those titles in any way, but it is of course interesting when the riders themselves have these insecurities.) there was that interview from early-ish last year where pecco talked about some of his personal limitations and how he views his own status in the sport:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
fascinating, isn't it? of course, I'm sure a second title will have helped to some extent in making him feel a little more entitled to that status in the sport - but this is not the kind of thing valentino or casey or jorge or marc ever would have said. there's a self-consciousness to pecco, an awareness of his uncertain, shaky journey to the top of the sport, how he's fully cognisant of how different he is to those names... which can be a problem at times - delusion is an athlete's life blood, and while the level headed insight pecco expresses here is arguably admirable, it is not necessarily helpful for him as a champion. on the other hand, sometimes lacking a little in the delusion department can be a good thing if it allows you to deliberately improve yourself, pushed on by the knowledge that you still have a long way to go... pecco's biggest self-inflicted wounds have tended to come when he's at his most comfortable - you can theorise about why this happens, but maybe that striver mindset is exactly what he needs to keep him going. it's still quite the admission to describe his 2022 season as more incomplete than either valentino or marc's title runs. (mind you, it's arguably even less complete a season than some of their misses - of course with valentino you have the obvious ones, but did you know that marc scored an average of 13.44 points in 2015 vs pecco's average of 13.25 in 2022? obvious caveat that in 2015 there were considerably fewer competitive bikes and barely any capable of regularly challenging for race wins.) the need to prove himself is always there with pecco... it keeps peaking through with him, and it absolutely peaks through in his approach to marc. yes, yes, acosta is the future, jorge martin has been his title rival more recently... but of course, beating marc would be special. do you think pecco ever dreamed that of it? do you think he really believed that he could before he was already premier class champion? with most champions, you would say it's likely. with pecco, I'm not quite so sure
as for pedro, yeah, obviously, that's just the cycle continuing lol. deeply curious what those two regularly competing at the sharp end of races looks like. pedro has kinda kept his distance, isn't that much of a marc fan himself... when he talks inspirations he tends to bring up schwantz, stoner, pedrosa, and of course rossi
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
schwantz is far from an unusual pick amongst riders, though as the years pass perhaps gradually more so - it certainly reveals an appreciation for the history of the sport. as do the other choices, in a way... let's not forget that acosta was eight years old when casey retired. of course back in the day casey and dani themselves got plenty of criticism for how 'boring' they were - that's just how these things go! nobody's ever nostalgic for the present etc etc
pedro did also talk last year about how the public wants celebrations and rivalries, critiquing how friendly riders are nowadays and saying people want battles like jorge/dani, valentino/marc, and so on (full clip here)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
heartwarming: global number of people who still care about the valentino/sete rivalry is now confirmed at 2 (two)
obviously, you can't just go out and manufacture feuds because you're feeling like it, and pedro's had a pretty quiet rookie season in that sense. but once he feels like he's settled in and can challenge the infamous marc marquez in an actual title fight? on the basis of this rhetoric, you'd at least hope he's not going to be too shy in taking on the challenge. of course he too wants to beat marc more than anyone else... again, it's a question of legacy, how pedro clearly situates himself within the same lineage as both valentino and marc - even if personally he aspires to be more of a successor to the former than the latter. always better to take the crown for yourself, right? this is a kid who's clearly into the history of the sport and is already determined to make himself a big part of that story... weaving himself into that narrative by taking on a legend of the past, taking on the task of disposing with that legend himself. plus, given pedro is so aware of that history - he knows that what people remember are the rivalries. he wants some of that for himself! it'll be interesting to see how proactive he'll be in making that happen, certainly seems like an enterprising young lad
anyhow, yes, plenty of potential for both of those dynamics. and yes, they do very much want to beat marc - but if we're talking about who wants to beat him the most, jorge martin probably deserves a mention right around now. does have to be said that something dumb like the portimao thing is costing pecco and marc this year. it's kind of gone under given the sheer bucketloads of points all the title contenders are throwing away, but pecco would be eight not eighteen points behind in the standings if he had settled for sixth in portimao, and for marc it would be twenty four rather than thirty five points if he'd backed out of the move and had another go on the next lap. relatively unlikely to make a difference at the end of the season... though for mr title decider pecco bagnaia, it sure might be! I did joke about making the pecco/marc portimao thing tradition, but generally speaking two top riders crashing each other out isn't that common a thing, and it's pretty..? rare? that it's the same two riders on multiple occasions? I'm drawing a bit of a blank here, to be honest... then again, title contenders do seem to crash rather more than they used to (admittedly they also have a lot of opportunities now) - so maybe this is going to become a more regular occurrence. but what is more likely to happen is that when you have two competitive riders on the same bike, they do run the risk of taking turns stealing points from each other at the circuits where their bike is at its best. I think pecco and marc can probably minimise this given what a good all-round bike the ducati is across a range of different circuits, and also given that as individual riders they do at least seem to be reasonably distinct in what their strongest and weakest tracks are. all in all, I kind of doubt they'll cost each other like that next year... though admittedly if portimao is anything to go by I may be tempting fate
#still think marc's gonna WIN that fight and it could easily be one sided but I do *hope* it'll be interesting at least#pedro citing casey and schwantz together... actually wonder how casey feels about schwantz these days#brr brr#batsplat responds#//#i think my favourite moment of 'man you people really will not help each other' was late 2017#where you did kinda look at jorge/vale and go. guys marc's about to take a SIXTH title. those are YOUR numbers he's surpassing/threatening#and valentino was the one who mathematically killed his teammate's chance of beating marc by finishing right ahead of him at pi#whereas jorge... well. you know#it's quite funny because the whole time during pi '17 i did have a bit of my brain go 'oh god what if valentino makes marc crash'#because that was some HARD racing and can you IMAGINE what the discourse would've been??#so many people would've assumed he did it on purpose to try and stop marc from winning another title. and it could've done just that!!#kind of ironic? funny? tragic? fitting? that their actual next conflict ended up being over something so incredibly deeply pointless#another miss from my side was having a bit of a feeling about catalunya 2019 given it felt marc had been kinda terse all weekend#bit too close to valentino a bit too often!!#though i suppose it wasn't as much a 'miss' as it was 'jorge what the fuck was that'. i still think i was onto something with that race#wow this is a bit of a tangent... anyway idk always healthy to correct for how self centred these blokes are#not just in the sense of being selfish but also in that they're just thinking about themselves#that being said if you put motegi 2010 and phillip island 2017 side by side it is kind of interesting...#current tag

Episode 4 is my favorite so far. Live blogging thoughts beneath the cut.
FUCK YES S1 GAMORA'S STORY. This immediately makes up for my ep 3 mehs.
FUCK YES 2012 AVENGERS TONY.
THE GRANDMASTER, YES <3
TONY'S RELIEF UPON SEEING PEPPER. MY HEART.
Tony saying he put his party days behind him--again, MY HEART.
Only 4 mins into the ep and all I can think is that the writers are doing a damn good job with this Tony.
Valkyrie!!!!!!! MY LOVE, YAS!
Tony saying the following to GAMORA, of all characters, got me in the feels: "Victory? Glory? People died. I lost a friend. Do you know what it's like to see your home world destroyed? Almost brought to its knees by a madman?"
TONY HEARING THE GRANDMASTER SAY HE WASN'T A HERO BUT A NASTY MAN AND THEN TONY NOT ZAPPING GAMORA!!!!!!!!
SDKFJALDJSFSALDJFLAJDF
I LOVE THIS EP. LOVE.
Tony & Valkyrie kicking ass together is a vibe <3
BAMF Gamora <3 yasssss
Tony building shit <3 with a lil fuzzy critter on his shoulder <3
...how does Tony know campground rules 🤨 Howard did not take him camping. My first thought was Rhodey, but I bet it was Jarvis. FEELS. 😥
Grandmaster calling Gamora a moppet of Thanos and finishing that exchange with "Daughter, really? [scoffs] Sure, I'll stick to that story, too," was fucking brutal. Fantastic writing here, too, showing Gamora outside perspectives on her father and their relationship.
I want to give a huge fucking hug to whoever wrote this Tony because I love him. 100% spot on for what I'd expect from 2012 Tony after surviving, realizing Pepper was safe, and figuring out he might be able to get home. No perving, no giving into hedonism--only righteous anger for others being treated badly. Respecting and trusting and bonding with the individuals he meets <3 Tony's so charismatic and this is showcased perfectly. AND ACKNOWLEDGING HIS DADDY ISSUES AND TRYING TO HELP SOMEONE ELSE WITH THEIR OWN?? I JUST. MY. HEART.
Jeff Goldbum has so much fun with Grandmaster and it shows <3
The feels when Gamora gave Tony her name <3
King Valkyrie of Sakaar, yassssss.
Tony needing to get home to Pepper... AGAIN, MY HEART.
Tony and Gamora bonding and having each other's backs and taking down Thanos??? FUCK YES.
I loved this ep. As a Tony fan, this ep went HARD and it did not have to do that but it did and I just. jfdlajsflajsd. FLAILS, FEELS, ALL THE THINGS.

You shiver and hide behind your eyelids. The air swirls around you in a cyclone as you clasp to the icy metal against you. You can't believe this is happening and yet your imminent doom cannot be denied.
You squeal as Tony lets you go. You squeeze him tighter, knowing you won't be able to hold on forever. Not with the whipping winds and bone-deep chill.
You brace yourself, trembling, and your feet meet solid ground. A gentle tap on your side has you tearing away as the dearth of sound and motion hits you like a truck. You look at Tony in defiance, your embarrassment curdling just under your skin.
"That was fun," he chuckles as his mask retracts to reveal a taunting smirk.
"Whatever. Go back to New York, I'll find my way--"
You turn and swallow your words. Your grandmother's house is right behind you. You peer around and push your shoulders back. You really aren't winning this one.
"Can't say I never did anything for ya. Lot quicker than the bus," he snorts.
"Oh," you spin back to him, "so you think this makes us even?"
"It's a start," he shrugs. "Now," he holds his wrist up as if to check the time and a projection casts from a microscopic projector. He swipes through the wall of text as a lens extends from his suit and hovers in front of his eyes. "If I'm gonna get that trailer, I need to speak with the leasee, a Darlene? Is that mommy?"
You suck in your cheeks and puff out through you nose. It's like pulling wisdom teeth but you're getting somewhere. You put your hands on your hips and nod.
"Yeah, I'll go see if she's home."
"You know, I'm not sure how things work around here," he lowers his arm as the projection disappears and the lens folds back into his suit, "not sure about how things work around here but typically when someone brings you home, you invite them inside."
You stare at him, your brows arching. He scoffs and tilts his head.
"Tell ya what, I'll even dust my boots off."
He kicks his feet and brushes his metal gauntlets of his chest place. All at once the suit folds into itself. You frown and examine him, trying to figure out where it's hiding under his blazer. He straightens his tie and comes out his hair with his fingers.
"There, all dolled up to meet mom," he winks.
You chew your lip. He's annoying but he says he's going to help. Besides, you'd rather he deal with your mom and be done with him.
"Fine, come on."
You turn and march away. He snickers and follows, "so hospitable."
"Well, sorry to disappoint but we don't have a butler." You go up onto the low porch and pull open the screen door with a squeak.
"Huh, that really what you think of me?" He grabs the door above your head as you unlock the inner one. "I sit in my ass all day and drink champagne and smoke cigars? I'll have you know I do all that and save the world when it comes calling "
"Mm, got it." You drone as you push inside, "mom? Grandma? We got company."
"Really rolling out that red carpet," he scoffs.
"Stay here," you say as you head down the hall.
"You know I don't usually take orders," he intones, his voice drifting off into words you can't make out clearly, "...kinda hot..."
You don't think it's too bad. Your grandma's place is usually blistering in the summer but it's just about tolerable today. Her bedroom door is closed, signalling she's probably sleeping, but your mother isn't where you expect to her. Her ash tray is on the table but the kitchen is empty.
The back door is open. You swing open the screen and lean out. She's puffing a cigarette over your grandmother's pansies.
"Mom, someone's here about the trailer."
"Tell the damn landlord I'm not payin' til I get a new one," she snarls.
"It's not him." You insist.
"Huh, insurance peddler?" She butts out the smoke on the wooden railing, leaving the stub there.
"Tony Stark." You answer bluntly.
She cackles, "fucking smart ass. Go away."
You state at her and she scowls. She huffs and tramps over to you. You hold the door for her and she enters.
"You and your goddamn jokes..." she grumbles as she crosses the kitchen.
You stay a few feet back as you follow. She stumbles to a halt as she reaches the doorway. She coughs and looks at you over her shoulder, "holy shit."
You shrug and shoo her with your fingers.
"Darlene, wonderful to meet you," Tony sounds almost charming as his footfalls creak on the floorboards.
"Mr. Stark," she preens. You haven't heard that simper in ages. "What are you doing here?"
"Well, I did say I'd fix what I broke." He explains. "Really unfortunate what happened. Sometimes we can't avoid a little collateral but just happy no one was hurt."
"Of course," she chimes. "Well, it wasn't much but it was our home."
"Humble," he praises. "Your daughter has been a great help too. Such a lovely girl."
"Eh, oh, I s'pose," her voice slants with uncertainty.
"We got a lot of details to go over. I had my people come up with some options but I want you to be happy so I'll leave the choice up to you. Gonna take a bit so how about I order dinner. My treat, of course." He pauses and you peek put from the kitchen. He smirks past your mother, "you like pizza?"
"Oh, Mr. Stark how generous. Whatever you like is good enough for us." She giggles. You wince. She doesn't giggle.
You retreat back into the kitchen. She's just like those kids clamouring for autographs and the star-struck residents completely unbothered by the burning ruin. They don't see anything but him.
