Sanjay Gupta: I stand by Jazbaa, but I also feel I let Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Irrfan Khan down – #BigInterview – Times of India
We are in the age of remakes. Bollywood consistently looks at the South films for inspiration. TV and OTT shows are born as spin-offs from already established movie franchises. Even contemporary music – whether it’s for films or from the indie circuit – is a rehash of the golden melodies and tunes. But one man was pioneering the trend of remakes, adaptations and inspiration two decades ago and…

In The Memory Of Irrfan Khan
On April 29th, 2020, the well-known actor Irrfan Khan passed away due to a colon inflammation. This was unexpected even when he disclosed his condition on Twitter in 2018. This is a sad occasion for everyone, so I thought instead of mourning his death, we should celebrate his contribution to the industry.
Long Story Short
Born in Rajasthan to a Muslim family, Irrfan Khan was from a generally low class family. Although he was talented in cricket, he had to opt out for acting instead because he didn’t have that much funds. He did his MA in Jaipur and joined the National School of Drama in 1984. After graduation, he was given minor roles in TV shows with little to no acknowledgement. Soon enough, he was given a slew of feature length films that gave him critical success and recognition, such as Rog, Maqbool, and Haasil. In 2008, he appeared in Slumdog Millionaire as the cop interrogating Jamal ruthlessly and he gained international recognition from there. After some more movies, he recieved a National Film Award for best actor for his role in Paan Singh Tomar. During this time, he recieved the fourth-highest civilian award, Padma Shri Award. He got a taste of commercial success with movies like The Lunchbox, Piku, and Hindi Medium, which eared him Filmfare Award for Best Actor. His career seemed to be going stable with movies like Karwaan and Angrezi Medium, but little did we know that the latter will be his last film appearance.
Notable Performances
Miyan Maqbool in Maqbool
Ranvijay Singh in Haasil
Ashoke Ganguly in The Namesake
The Police Inspector in Slumdog Millionaire
Paan Singh Tomar in Paan Singh Tomar
“Pi” Molitor Patel (adult) in Life of Pi
Saajan Fernandes in The Lunchbox
Rana Chaudhary in Piku
Raj Batra in Hindi Medium
Champak Bansal in Angrezi Medium
Legacy
In his 35 years of acting, Irrfan has grown a cult following with very devoted fans. Coming from a low class family, his inspiring story to stardom is the best example of hard work and perseverance. He was a role model for an entire generation of film lovers and showed how far true dedication can get you. Truly a humble talent Bollywood didn’t deserve, his death has left a gaping hole in the industry. May he rest in peace and may his memory and legacy live on forever.

last film i watched: The last new movie I watched was Work It, starring Sabrina Carpenter and Jordan Fisher. It was cheesy and predictable and I loved it. I also rewatched The Lunchbox, which is a terrific movie, but it made me sad about Irrfan Khan’s death all over again. He was such a brilliant, talented actor and it’s not fair that he's gone.
last tv show i watched: Lately I’ve been watching a lot of Beat Bobby Flay on Food Network, lmao. I don’t usually watch Food Network, but there hasn’t been much to watch lately and my mom loves this show so I started watching with her. The last show I watched in full was Made in Heaven on Amazon Prime, which was sooo good. I’m dying for a season two.
favorite character: Buffy Anne Summers, always. My brave, kindhearted hero.  ❤️ My favorite new character this year was Kate Kane. I hadn’t felt that strongly about a character in a long time and I’m so sad I only had her for one season. I’m looking forward to the new Batwoman but I miss Kate terribly.

Blog #6: Claudi Kishi
Tumblr media
Growing up, I didn’t see many characters that looked like me. I didn’t see many Indian Americans in TV shows, cartoons, books, or any other sort of media. It felt sad not being able to see people like myself in these different forms of media. The times I did see Indian characters in American media, it was the stereotypical “Indian guy”. Looking at Phineas and Ferb, we had Baljeet, an Indian boy with a very heavy accent that was very smart. In Big Bang Theory, we had Raj, an Indian guy with a very heavy accent that was very smart and pretty perverted. In Sanjay and Craig, there was an Indian kid with the same name as me but with a pet snake. In the Simpsons, we had Apu, an immigrant Indian American who ran a convenience store and had eight kids.
So, while it was nice for my young self to see Indian characters on screen, it didn’t feel nice knowing that they were side characters, asides from Sanjay, and were just written through stereotypes. It was cool to see Sanjay as a main character, what’s not cool is walking around middle school having kids acting like snake charmers or asking where Craig is. Well, I’m sure having the name Sanjay was a large part of the Craig “jokes”, but it did not feel good. But, Life of Pi and Slumdog Millionaire were two movies that I actually felt proud to see in big media. Both really good movies that were received very well in the US that finally saw Indians in the big leagues of movies. Also, Indian actors and actresses have been beginning to emerge in more mainstream American movies now, which is a huge step forward for the Indian American community. Deepika Padukone, Irrfan Khan, Dev Patel, Amrish Puri are just some of the Indians that have made it to Hollywood. Of course, they’re side characters but they’re not based on stereotypes. The movie Blinded by the Light doesn’t have an Indian American as the lead character, but it does have a Pakistani Britisher lead. The plot of the movie is something I can relate to as Pakistani and Indian families have nearly identical family structures. It’s a movie that has someone that looks like me as the lead, and that lead is someone I can actually relate to. It was refreshing to see this.
Tumblr media
It is incredibly important to have diversity in different forms of media because representation matters. We live in the US, the most diverse country in the world, so it is inexcusable to not have a wide variety of representation for different groups of people in the US. Asian, African, Latin-x, Native American, LGBTQ+, you name it, whatever group there is in the US, they deserve to be represented in various forms of media because they exist. Simply not putting them in the spotlight is essentially erasure of their existence. Thankfully, its been getting better for groups with low representation and progress is actually being made. However, it shouldn’t just stop here. We need to keep on going so these groups get the equal representation they deserve so media isn’t bland and full of white folks.

What I get from The Life of Pi movie.
Director: Ang Lee Based on the novel by Yann Martel Screenplay by David Magee Stars: Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan, Adil Hussain
I saw this movie when it came out on 2012, I’ve never had the chance to read the book, unfortunately, but the other day I got the chance to see it again on TV and now I can see it differently and I got a new message I’d like to share with you all. Plus I think this is such a valid topic nowadays to write about, considering how the news is always flashing negativity towards religion.
First, I’d like to say that I’ve always found to be differences between religion and faith. I think since all religions are managed by men there always be imperfections and thing we don’t agree with, religion is more of an attempt to make faith something that you can organize in big groups so they can benefit economically, politically and socially from it. Faith a something personal is something you are taught to do or you acquire with years and life experiences, we can have common things in the way we live and practice our faiths, but at the end of the day, we all understand it differently. With that said my thoughts on the movie.
One thing that is worth mentioning is the fact that the movie is a sweet caramel for the eyes. It is visually beautiful and it truly enhances the message behind both of the stories you’ll hear, the acting is good as well and the visual effects are tastefully created, not making the visuals less beautiful or too exaggerated.
Now, from this point on I’m going to be as straight-to-the-point as possible. The big major premise of the story is encapsulated in the phrase “I just told you two stories. Which one do you prefer?” This, knowing the content of both stories, can be interpreted in different ways that at some point, are connected to each other. You can say it is about the sacred books of major religions and the fact that they all tell “fantastic stories” that, for someone of a different believe-system, may not seem right. So, as a human being, you are free to choose which story you believe, which one makes more sense to you or helps you fulfill your spiritual needs, or which one helps you make sense of the world.
One can also say that it is about tolerance and respect if you prefer not to have a religion and you consider yourself an agnostic or an atheist. It can be a way to explain religion and maybe understand and appreciate the basics of faith if you’ve never been exposed to those topics on your upbringings. When I try to see it from that perspective, I think of it as a way someone can foresee why people choose to be part of a religion and respecting their election because, at the end of the day, it’s their way to see life.
Another possible interpretation that is very linked to the others is the one related to science. For years and years - well probably since men separated himself from the idea that God created everything and started guiding every aspect of life by science -, there has been a debate over which one is the true story. Some scientist say that the big bang created everything and see religion as something created by men to avoid explaining things we couldn’t understand; they see it as something that only stops scientific evolution and helps ignorance to prevail. The other group is frequently seen as religion purists and extremist that considers science as a manifestation of the human pride and arrogance.
But what about if science and religion are both part of the same story, one that can be seen as the same from different perspectives, like I interpret from the movie, or as two parts of one whole explanation for our reality? I’m sure many people have already realized this or at least thought of it, but there are so many things that we still can’t understand of the world, from our nature and our lives, and I’m sure that every angle or every profession in the world gets to a point of expertise where things get blurry and where some just can’t be explained, or simply humankind needs to be satisfied on a spiritual level as much as the others.
Maybe scientist shouldn't rationalize faith by trying to find an explanation out of it or the things surrounding it. Just like the Pi number is infinite and can’t be put in one simple number to study and understand, faith and believing in a superior force can’t be put in a box and reduced. In other words, we all need to respect the differences, because we are all trying to survive and to make sense out of the cold hard world we live in. Some may have comfort in science and hard facts and some may have peace in a religion, but we all need to agree that both are part of the world, science is the base for most of the progress we have made as a species and there are also things we cannot explain connected to our spirits, hopes, and souls, and we shouldn't be torturing ourselves to find those the logic.
I don’t want to dig too deep into these matters, I think is better if I just make the propositions and poke a little with your curiosity, and maybe if you read the entire thing, probably you’ll be getting to your own conclusions. I just want to show how anyone can turn something so simple as a movie (a really good movie, based on a really good book), into a whole analysis or try to make out of it something positive; as the idea of tolerance and respect on the subject of religion, especially with all the talk that differences of opinion had generated in the international scenario. I hope you found this little ramble of ideas helpful or interesting; even if you don’t agree with it. Feel free to write me any idea, recommendation or a new interpretation of this movie. Let’s all learn from each other!
