Note

Fleming (he was/is a teacher at the Acedemy) and I thought it was interesting. It gives a glimpse at some workings of the academy but also what is like to be a civilian in a military environment specially when one doesn't exactly drink from the same kool aid (hope that's how the expression works, I'm not American)
i will look into it!! But now i get nervous reading about the usna because i don’t wanna know how inaccurate my portrayal of it is. Lmfao. Posting for the rec

Indian immigrants to Guyana in the 1800’s
To be precise, I am an Indo-Guyanese-American: The mother of all hyphenated identities and an illustration of a historic journey from India to the Caribbean. This heritage is commonly packaged in a number of different terms, all of which are heavily used as referential identifiers: Indo-Guyanese. Indo-Caribbean. Caribbean. West Indian. Indian. It is most aptly described as the Indo-Caribbean experience—an experience that is shared by Indians living throughout the Caribbean diaspora and thus serving as the blueprint for my existence.
This unique cultural disposition is why the Indo-Caribbean are able to culturally identify with public figures ranging from Hasan Minhaj to Nicki Minaj. It is why bursts of Caribbean intonation in Rihanna’s voice blanket me in the comfort of home, while the ballads of A.R. Rahman awaken pained demons within me, crying to connect with a history that was ripped from my hands long before I was born.
My parents hail from Guyana, a small country on the northern coast of South America. Guyana is one of the original colonies of the British West Indies and, although not located in the Caribbean Sea, the CARICOM Seat of Secretariat is located in Georgetown, Guyana, thus rendering the country a crucial member of the Caribbean family.  [Read more]

You spent the next few days in a fog of embarrassment, replaying the supermarket encounter with Letitia over and over in your mind. The idea of going to her acting class seemed impossible now. What if she thought you were some sort of creepy stalker? What if she mentioned it to someone else? The thought made your stomach churn.
Kerry noticed your odd behavior and prodded you for an explanation. "You've been acting weird. What's up?" she asked one evening as you both lounged on the couch.
You shrugged, trying to brush it off. "Just tired, I guess."
She wasn't being fooled. "Nope, not buying it. Something's definitely up."
You sighed, unable to keep it from her any longer. "It's nothing, really."
Kerry crossed her arms and raised an eyebrow. "I'm not moving until you tell me what's going on."
You took a deep breath, knowing you couldn't keep it from her any longer. "Okay, fine. I got invited to this... thing by... this girl that I like."
Kerry's eyes widened with excitement, and she couldn't suppress a grin. "Really? That's awesome! Why didn't you tell me sooner?"
"Because..." You felt your face flush. "Because it's obvious I have this embarrassing crush on her! I think she only invited me as a formality, and it would be weird if I actually went."
Kerry laughed, her eyes twinkling with mischief. "Oh my god, you have a crush! This is priceless! Who is she? Do I know her?"
You fidgeted nervously, avoiding her gaze. "No, you don't know her. And it's not a big deal."
"Not a big deal?" Kerry's grin widened. "You have a crush, and she invited you to something. This is a huge deal! Come on, give me some details."
You hesitated, feeling the heat rise to your cheeks. "She's... amazing. But I'm pretty sure she only invited me to be polite."
Kerry rolled her eyes. "You're overthinking this. She invited you because she saw something in you. You should totally go!"
You shook your head, anxiety gnawing at your insides. "No, she'll just be weirded out. She saw that I had a bunch of pictures of her on my phone, Kerry. She probably thinks I'm some kind of stalker."
Kerry's laughter rang out again. "Oh, you poor thing! You really got it bad, don't you?" She softened her tone, placing a comforting hand on your shoulder. "Look, you won't know unless you go. And you know what? I'll come with you. Moral support."
You hesitated, but Kerry's enthusiasm was infectious. "Are you sure? What if it's a disaster?"
"It won't be," Kerry said firmly. "You'll go, and you'll show her that you're serious. And if it gets awkward, I'll be right there with you. Deal?"
You bit your lip, considering her words. Finally, you nodded. "Deal."
Kerry grinned. "Good. We're going, and you're going to be amazing."
You still felt a knot of anxiety in your stomach, but Kerry's unwavering support made it a little easier to breathe. "Thanks, Kerry. I don't know what I'd do without you."
Kerry winked. "Probably hide in your room forever. But that's not happening on my watch. Now, let's get you an outfit together. We need you on your a-game!"
Tumblr media
The next evening, you led Kerry to the performing arts center, your steps growing slower and more hesitant with each passing block. The anxiety gnawed at you, every nerve in your body on high alert. The familiar streets of the neighborhood seemed suddenly foreign, each sound amplified, every passerby a potential judge of your insecurities.
As you walked, you kept glancing down at the tight shirt Kerry had insisted you wear, and the short shorts that felt entirely too revealing. You tugged at the hem of the shirt, trying to pull it lower, hoping to cover more skin. "I don't know about this outfit," you muttered, feeling the fabric cling to you uncomfortably. "I feel so exposed. Maybe I should go home and change."
Kerry rolled her eyes, not slowing her pace. "You look amazing. Trust me, it's just your nerves talking."
Your heart pounded in your chest, the closer you got to the performing arts center, the more your anxiety grew. You felt every bead of sweat forming on your brow, the fabric of your clothes sticking to your skin, making you want to crawl out of your own body. "Seriously, Kerry, I think I should change. These shorts are way too short. What if she thinks I'm trying too hard?"
Kerry glanced at you, her expression a mix of amusement and exasperation. "You? Trying too hard? Please. If anything, you’re trying too hard to hide." She swatted your hand away as you tried to cover your legs, making you stumble slightly. "Stop fidgeting. You’re going to be fine."
You sighed, feeling the heat rise to your face. "Easy for you to say. You're not the one who looks like they’re auditioning for a part in a teenage rom-com."
Kerry laughed, her grip on your hand tightening as she kept you moving forward. "If anyone is qualified to star in a rom-com, it’s you. With the amount of pining you do, you’re practically the lead character already."
You managed a weak laugh, but the knot in your stomach only tightened. By the time you reached the performing arts center, your legs felt like jelly. Standing outside the entrance, you tried once more to hide your legs with your hands, but Kerry swatted them away again.
"Would you stop that? You look great. Besides, this girl invited you because she likes you, right? She’s not going to care about your outfit."
"But what if she thinks I'm weird for actually showing up?" you asked, your voice barely above a whisper.
Kerry gave you a reassuring smile, her eyes filled with determination. "You’re doing this because you want to, and because you deserve to be here. Now come on," she said, tugging you forward with more force than you expected.
Before you could protest any further, Kerry dragged you through the doors of the performing arts center. The cool air of the lobby hit your face, and you took a deep breath, trying to steady your racing heart. Kerry's grip on your hand was unwavering. Her confidence was contagious, and as you took your first steps towards your fate, you felt a small spark of hope igniting within you.
Inside the auditorium, you were immediately struck by how bright and warm it was. The lights overhead cast a welcoming glow, and the soft hum of air conditioning created a comfortable, inviting atmosphere. A row of burgundy seats fanned out in front of a modest cherry wood stage, where Letitia stood, chatting with a colleague.
She looked effortlessly sexy under the stage lighting in a pair of form-fitting gray sweats and sneakers, her casual attire accentuating her lithe, athletic build. Her movements were fluid and graceful, her presence magnetic even in the simplicity of her outfit. She wore a snug tank top under a loose, cropped hoodie, and you couldn't help but notice how it emphasized her toned arms and the smooth curve of her neck. Her hair was now a cute, tiny afro, and the combination of her natural beauty and relaxed style made her even more breathtaking.
Your heart raced uncontrollably at the sight of her, the ambient chatter and Kerry's encouraging whispers fading into white noise. It was as if time had slowed down, every detail of Letitia etched into your mind—the way the swell of her backside was so obvious through her pants, the softness of her hair, and the easy confidence with which she moved.
Glancing around, you noticed that the dozen other attendees seemed equally relaxed and casual in their attire. The anxiety spiked as you became acutely aware of your own appearance—your oiled, shiny legs, the revealing clothes Kerry had picked out for you, your eyeliner, and your freshly done hair. You felt out of place, as if a spotlight had been cast on you alone, highlighting your insecurities.
You crossed your arms over your chest, trying to shrink into yourself. The feeling of vulnerability only intensified as you realized how out of place you looked and felt. Regret washed over you, making your cheeks burn with embarrassment. How could you have ever imagined that you had a chance? The idea seemed laughable now. Letitia's invitation, which had once felt like a glimmer of hope, now seemed like a formality, a polite gesture misinterpreted by your eager heart.
Your mind raced with self-doubt, and you could feel your pulse pounding in your ears. You were stupid for even imagining that Letitia might be interested in you. She probably only invited you to be nice, and here you were, standing out like a sore thumb in your trampy outfit. The regret gnawed at you, making you wish you could disappear into the plush seats and never be seen again.
Feeling utterly out of place and overwhelmed, you turned and grabbed Kerry’s arms, looking her in the eyes with a pleading desperation. “Kerry, please, let’s just leave,” you whispered urgently. “I can’t do this. I look ridiculous, and I feel so stupid. Let’s go, please.”
Kerry’s expression softened, but before she could respond, you heard your name called from across the room. You froze, turning slowly to see Letitia waving from the front of the stage, her smile warm and inviting. The sight of her instantly rooted you to the spot, your heart pounding even harder.
Letitia hopped down from the stage with ease and began making her way down the aisle toward you. The attendees parted like the Red Sea, their curious gazes following her as she walked over. Each step she took seemed to echo in the room, amplifying your anxiety and excitement. As she reached you, she gave you a dramatic once-over, her eyes lingering on your figure.
“I thought it was you, but I wasn’t sure,” Letitia said, her voice filled with genuine surprise and delight. Her gaze was intense, as if she couldn’t stop looking at you. “I’m so glad you made it.”
Before you could respond, she pulled you into a warm hug. The world seemed to fade away as you felt her arms around you, the softness of her touch and the faint floral scent of her perfume enveloping you. You were overwhelmed, entranced by the sensation of being so close to her. The hug was brief but left you feeling both lightheaded and grounded at the same time.
Letitia pulled back slightly, her eyes still locked on yours. “Let me take a look at you,” she said with a playful glint in her eye. She lifted her hand and made a twirling motion, indicating for you to spin around. Your nerves spiked, but you complied, doing a slow, nervous twirl under her watchful gaze. The attendees’ eyes were on you, adding to the whirlwind of emotions.
As you finished the twirl, Letitia’s smile widened. “Well, don’t you look absolutely stunning?” she said, her tone teasing yet sincere. “I’m so glad you’re here.”
Her words made your heart flutter, but the intensity of the moment also made you feel incredibly shy and nervous. Your cheeks flushed, and you found it hard to meet her gaze. You managed a small, hesitant smile, feeling both thrilled and intimidated by her attention. The anxiety and self-doubt didn’t entirely disappear, but under Letitia’s appreciative gaze, you felt a tiny spark of confidence mixed with your overwhelming shyness.
Just as you were getting lost in the moment, Kerry cleared her throat loudly, a reminder that she was still standing beside you. Letitia suddenly turned her attention to her, her expression shifting to one of delight. “Oh! I didn’t even see you there!” she exclaimed, her laughter warm and genuine.
“That’s fine!” Kerry replied, her excitement evident. “Cool set up you’ve got here!”
Letitia smiled, her eyes sparkling. “Thanks! I feel like I’ve met you before,” she said, tilting her head slightly in curiosity.
Kerry chuckled, a playful glint in her eye. “Well, all of the neighborhood is my family, so it’s possible! You know how it is.”
They shared a laugh, and you felt a sense of ease wash over you, grateful for Kerry’s lightheartedness. Letitia then clapped her hands together, her excitement palpable. “Well, I reckon I should get started with class now that everybody’s here,” she announced, looking directly at you to shoot a wink that felt both personal and intentional.
With that, she turned on her heel and made her way back to the stage, her presence commanding yet effortlessly casual. You felt yourself swooning, a rush going straight to your head at the memory of a few seconds ago. The world around you faded into a blissful haze, your heart still fluttering from the encounter.
In the corner of your eye, you caught Kerry’s knowing glance, accompanied by a head shake in your direction. You instinctively understood it was a warning of a stern probing conversation waiting for you later, but the thought barely registered. All you could think about was the way Letitia had looked at you, the warmth of her hug, and how her words lingered in the air like a sweet melody. For now, you were content to bask in the moment, letting the excitement and hope of what was to come overshadow everything else.

WHAT KEEPS RICH AFRICA POOR?
Africa is rich, only its people are poor. The famous line was used by American political scientist Michael Parenti while describing the colonial exploitation of the continent over the last 400 years. Put simply, foreigners take ownership of Africa’s labour and resource-rich land. Guyanese historian and activist Walter Rodney wrote a book on it called ‘How Europe Underdeveloped Africa’. It explains the on-going abusive, extractive policies, which Parenti summarises perfectly in this clip.
In case you still need convincing, here are some stats. According to the UN, Africa has about 30 percent of the world’s mineral reserves, 12 per cent of the world’s oil and 8 per cent of the world’s natural gas reserves. However, in 2019, about 34 per cent of Africans were still living below the international poverty line of $1.90 per day. Of course, there are other factors are at play like corruption, bad leadership etc. But foreign exploitation is the big one, don’t you think?

Chapter Twenty-Seven: Strangler Fig
Jason bought dinner at a little restaurant and walked to a nearby building to eat. A few children passed back and forth past him, laughing and playing, and he stopped them by sucking his teeth in their direction. They all stopped together. “ I’m looking for work. What sort of business is done here? ” Jason asked in Guyanese Creole. Most of the children remained silent.
“You don’t want to work there. They’re doing bad things,” the youngest boy replied.
The children shushed him, and Jason shook his head. “No. It’s alright. Let him speak. Go on, please,” Jason replied.
“They have bad men with guns, and they want to build smoke buildings—.”
“Factories,” the oldest girl clarified.
“Yeah. And they’re not supposed to. My papa says they’re not supposed to,” the little boy explained. Jason reached into his pocket and gave the little boy and the older girl a handful of money, making sure he gave the boy a substantial amount compared to the girl.
The other children complained, and Jason clicked at them. “He gave me answers… And she helped. Go play, now. I won’t keep you any longer,” Jason stated. After the children had dispersed, a woman came out of the building with a soul that smelled so sour that Jason was sick to his stomach. He set his food aside, covering his mouth with the back of his hand.
She stopped in front of him, lowering her sunglasses as she leaned forward, her cleavage in line with his face as she patted the sweat from her exposed skin. “Are you American?” she asked. Jason nodded. “You want a job?”
Jason chewed his bottom lip, squinting as he turned away from her. It took everything in him not to throw up. He nodded. The woman gave him a card with her number on it. “You’re a nice-sized boy,” she smiled, “I’m sure we could find things for you to do. Call me sometime.”
Jason nodded, watching as she walked away. He blew out air through loose lips and tightened his jaw. Despite losing his appetite, he finished eating everything on his plate. One thing he learned was to finish every meal because he didn’t know when he’d be stuck somewhere without access to food. He traveled a little ways out of town to hike through the Amazon to get a feel for his surroundings.
It reminded him of the little adventures he’d take with Damian on the island. Sometimes, they’d spend the night under the stars when the weather allowed it. Everything reminded him of home. He never stopped thinking about them.
He set up camp above ground and lay on his back, staring at the canopy of leaves overhead. He didn’t have nightmares about being buried alive, he didn’t dream of home. He dreamt of Josh’s warm cajun dialect rich with deep, dark tones. Jason savored the memory, sleeping warm and comfortable in his layered clothes, smelling red wine in roux. He breathed out through his nose, his chest falling dramatically as he threw one leg over the makeshift hammock, one hand on his chest, another on his knife. He heard rustling in the leaves, and he sat up, clutching his knife tight in his fist. He looked directly overhead, meeting eyes with a woman with a shaved head through the leaves, balanced on the upper branches, her strong limbs, lithe and glistening with a thin sheen of sweat in the moonlight. He could physically smell the faint scent of jasmine in the air, and his breath caught. She swallowed hard and darted away, trying to disappear into the trees, and Jason quickly followed her. She couldn’t outrun him, not even in the trees. Jason was far too quick on his feet.
It wasn’t long before Jason caught her, pinning her to the trunk of the tree, and using his dagger to get his bearings. She panted, immobile as she stared into his eyes. Wild and glowing in the moonlight. “How did you find me?” Jason questioned. She grabbed his shirt, and he held on tight to his dagger as she studied him. The air felt warm and thick, tasting of blood oranges and salty sweat. It made Jason’s mouth water. “Please.”
“I wasn’t looking for you. I was assigned here,” she answered, “Jason… Why won’t you speak my name, my love?” Jason held his face close to her neck, taking in her scent, his chin resting on her shoulder.
“What’s changed? Something’s changed… Who hurt you? Killed—. Killed you?” Jason questioned. His heart raced, violently pumping in his chest. He could smell the Pit on her body. Saru turned away in shame, and Jason guided her face toward his with a gentle finger. He wanted to look into her eyes. “A name. Let me avenge you… Saru, please.” Jason spoke through clenched teeth, something fierce and animal coloring his voice. Saru cupped his cheek in her palm. Jason breathed out, letting Saru lull him out of his impassioned homicidal rage.
“Damian killed him,” Saru whispered, “I missed you. Imagine my shock—. I don’t want you to think I followed you here. I ran because I—.” Jason’s upper body rolled forward in one fluid motion as his lips found hers… And it calmed his spirit. He relaxed his shoulders, releasing the dagger as he ran a hand over the soft growth on her buzzed head.
“I almost didn’t recognize you,” Jason whispered. Saru’s eyes widened, still clutching his shirt.
“How did you know?” Saru asked.
“I felt my heartbeat in my throat. No one else has ever had that effect on me,” Jason answered, “I’m not ready to return. Will you accept me when I do?”
“I love you. Nothing’s—.”
Jason shook his head, grinning wildly in the dark. “But it will change, Saru. I want to marry you when—. When we’re twenty-one…  If you’ll have me… Will you—?” Saru’s hands loosened as she wrapped her arms around his torso, slipping underneath his shirt and up his spine. She kissed him, hungrily kissing as if she were searching for something inside his lips, desperately kissing for something more. It frightened Jason at first, but he softened, closing his eyes, and his tears mixed in with sweat as he felt her tongue in his mouth. She backed away, leaving him breathless, and dizzy.
“Yes, and try not to die,” Saru replied before shoving him out of the tree and disappearing into the forest.
When Jason got his bearings, Saru was gone. He chuckled. “You still make me nervous, Saru… How will I breathe when we meet again?” Jason mumbled to himself. He returned to his hammock after retrieving his knife, and he dreamed of tobacco jasmine and blood oranges. Jason dreamed of lips and the warm stickiness of fruit juice in sunlight. It mixed in making him feel warm and full as the strangely familiar roux filled his mind. It made his mouth water as he tossed and turned, sweating even in the cool winter air. He awakened to a gunshot and the smell of smoke and gunpowder. He shouted. “Who’s there?” Jason asked.
“Where are you? I could’ve shot you!” a man shouted in reply. Jason climbed down from the tree, with his dagger sheathed in his waistband. He shook the man’s hand.
“I thought I was trespassing or something,” Jason laughed, feigning friendliness. He knew what the man was just by looking at him.
“Not yet, kiddo… Paul Dougherty,” he smiled. Jason grinned in reply.
“Evan Parsons,” Jason lied as he reached into his pants pocket and flashed his fake ID. The man smelled sour like vomit. He covered his mouth, pretending to yawn.
Paul grinned, flashing a pearly white smile. “You’re a big fella, but you look kind of young. Are you on vacation, or are you looking for a job?” Paul questioned.
“Err… Um, you work for that woman, huh?” Jason asked in reply. “She offered me a job, but I don’t have any place to stay or a phone or nothin’. I’m strong, and I’m real reliable… I just need my foot in the door.”
“Well, Evan. Are you gonna be in this spot for a while?” Paul asked. Jason nodded, his eyes large and innocent. “Okay… Well, I’ll talk to Trista and see if I can get you a trailer out here. She’s looking for boys to do security out this way. You’d most likely be working overnight shifts, and it’s a cash job… Off the books.”
“That’s fine. I just need a way to get some food in my stomach… And it’d be nice to have a roof over my head before the rain comes,” Jason answered.
“Alright. I’ll be back in three hours with news. If you got the job, I’ll bring you a trailer by tonight,” Paul replied as he started toward town. “Evan Parsons! I’ll remember it!”
“Yeah! Good lookin’, Mr. Dougherty!” Jason shouted, pretending to be happy about his new job. It made him sick to his stomach.

Guyana’s government said it is seeking help from the U.S. to improve its defense capabilities amid fears that neighboring Venezuela might one day seize a disputed region in western Guyana that is rich in minerals and oil. The announcement follows two days of talks among top Guyanese officials and Daniel P. Erikson, deputy assistant secretary of defense for the Western Hemisphere who traveled to the South American country to discuss defense and security partnerships.
The talks ended late Tuesday with Erikson saying the U.S. would help Guyana create a more organized and better equipped military in coming months. He did not provide further details. Erikson also said that security forces and specialized training teams that have visited Guyana in the past year will continue to do so in 2024.[...]
“We are looking forward to working with them, especially deepening information sharing,” he said. “We do recognize that Guyana’s at a turning point in terms of its own economic development, in terms of the regional role that it is capable of playing, and so we want to make sure that our defense relationship with Guyana continues to meet the times as the situation in Guyana continues to evolve.”[...]
Guyana President Irfaan Ali and Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro met in the eastern Caribbean island of St. Vincent as part of an emergency mediation meeting organized by regional leaders to prevent further escalation. After the meeting, both sides agreed to refrain from using force[...]
Venezuela stepped up its [rhetoric] toward Guyana after American oil giant ExxonMobil and consortium partners discovered huge deposits of oil and gas off Guyana’s coast in 2015. Daily production is at nearly 600,000 barrels of oil and is expected to increase.
