What’s great about Hilda is that a lot of things that could be plotholes are easily explained by the fact that this show is told from the perspective of children. Why didn’t Frida question her magically cleaning room? She’s a kid, she thought it was normal! Why does Trolberg jail citizens for 100 years for accidentally bringing trolls into the city? They don’t, kids just spread playground rumours. Why don’t the main characters react more strongly to the existence of magical creatures they were previously unaware of? They’re kids, they’re unaware of 60% of non magical things anyway, they learn abt new stuff all the time! When you’re a kid you don’t question weird stuff so much, provided it’s explained to you like it’s normal! Idk, I just think it’s neat

tbh i might go ahead and put dungeons in as a part of the bellum x linebeck fic's plot since like. 1) struggling to actually figure out a main plot and having dungeons as sort of bit points to hit and be little bits of fitting exploration and bonding and 2) i do kinda want to do dungeons. i like thinking of them and again i do think its fitting.

this is rlly out of left field but i got stoned, had a thought abt the dalish. they are SO similar to irish travelers in a lot of ways, and some of the bad worldbuilding abt them (the wolf motifs in partic r VRY irish) fit rlly well for some of the ways my family feel about our background, and it could have worked if not for like. the racial coding and slavery turning a maybe-good narrative abt travelers into a bad narrative abt indigenous ppl (1/3)

ireland has it's own kind of shitty history w/ traveller communities that still persists but its NOT the same as like. how roma and jewish people are treated everywhere else. the accents and the wagons and the structure of the wedding in origins n even the way some of the npcs interact/the isolationism is so close to some traveler communities, but then it takes a sharp left turn into indigenous genocide and trauma and it loses the thread. i almost feel a little bit used in a way? (2/3) because as much as i like seeing aspects of irish traveller culture (both good & bad), its a vry subjective mixed bag that can't and shldn't be applied to other groups even if they share one similar struggle. sometimes seeing things that are so close to it in the game, and then seeing it mixed up w/ another marginalized (specific racially marginalized tbh) groups' struggles, i feel like the traveller elements are just a stick for the devs to hit other minorities with here (3/3) (4/3 SORRY) i just realized after i sent those that it's kind of a lot: but tl;dr i have a lot of traveller family, dragon age inquisition making the elves extremely close-knit, isolationist people with thick irish accents who were chased out of their homeland and are constantly accused of lying/stealing/being dishonest and violent? and THEN also being like 'yeah they're enslaved for being elves and we're gonna add all this indigenous and jewish and rromani coding'. makes me feel kinda dirty.

totally valid if you enjoy the series or the points im abt to mention, these just b my opinions

worldbuilding / aesthetics i distinctly as a just started middle schooler being disappointed by the designs 'modernized' world i'd so come to love. ie, the western/european industrial revolution influences. sure, historically, due to colonization imperialism etc from western powers that's how a lot of it happened (to my understanding); but for me there was no 'europe' equivalent in the atla world,,,, so like where would those visual influences b coming from??? tbh it's less even 'oh it doesnt make sense in-world' but more just wanting to imagine what modernized asian aesthetics would look like sans western influence. i'd also hate to equate 'modernization' with 'westernization'. Perhaps sth like an AsianFuturism. for me it felt like a shame that the creators couldn't imagine more tech advanced asian cultures without the influence of the western world. This was also the desire of a younger me, pre-Asian American media boom (think starting somewhere around crazy rich asians, EEAAO, Michelle Yeoh, etc), back when i almost literally never seen ppl who looked like me portrayed meaningfully not even gonna lie i thought the giant statue of aang was cringe LMAO,,, i was like bro this isn't manhattan like hello????? like to me if aang were to be memorialized in world that's not how it would look.

2. explaining too much/avatar wan's arc again, completely valid if you enjoyed this part. i just personally didn't care for it.

i felt like it was explaining sth that didn't need to be explained, and then explained in an overly literal way that didn't add to the overall work. for me spirits/spiritualism/the avatar were a deeply ingrained given part of the world. the avatar especially was just a built-in self-regulation mechanism (essentially a guaranteed diplomat who has had to live/experience cultures of the 4 dominant nations)

then the way the first avatar was explained felt overly literal; the world of spirits/spiritualism became just a gigantamax pokemon fight - oh, who's the bigger spirit??? will they have the muscles to beat the other meanie spirit????? rather than spirits being portrayed as sth just beyond mortal understanding, ineffable & transdimensional, fickle beings in their own right. Even the spirits who appear frightening or uncomfortable weren't portrayed as necessarily 'bad,' they were just spirits, and with that came with their own moral codes that human perceptions didn't strictly apply to. and like also the raava/vaatu dichotomy was stupid. it reverts to (tired) white = good and black = bad tropes. and also yin/yang DOES NOT mean good/bad LIKE PLEASE. in general i feel like a lot of the tlok plot points came from a (unecessary imo) need to explain everything, make sure everything was black&white (ha), either good or bad, rather than the complex morality a lot of OG atla writing portrayed and further implied. Reminds me of famous concept artist Lorraine O'Grady's essay 'Olympia's Maid' (ctrl F "both: and" to jump to the sections im referencing), critiquing Western 'either:or'ism that struggles to accept the multiplicity of "both:and"ism having watched atla, my questions weren't 'oh how did the avatar come to be?' i was more curious to see different corners of the world, different expressions of the cultures of the four nations (we've seen the swamp benders, the sun warriors, what else was out there? SHOUTOUT THIS RAD ART). i also rlly vibed with a lot of fan writings, such as what may have happened to any underground air nomad diaspora. i wish they focused on using bending/atla world mechanics as vehicles to allegorize concepts & human experiences rather than wasting spending all their time explaining those mechanics to death.

and yes im aware the show is made by western creators for western audiences (and the four element system is western, by contrast for example chinese theology (?) concerns 5 elements - wood, metal, earth, water, fire) and yes OG atla definitely had a lot of flaws, but for me these were the points where i stopped enjoying tlok ykwim

This comment is so funny for many reasons (including the suspension of disbelief u have to employ to accept that an avatar clone can reproduce non-sterile offspring w a native Na'vi without suficient information from the first film to explain that lol) but it reminds me of how rlly terrible it is, imo, that the story was set up this way: that Jake HAD to be a character that played a major role as an accomplice in genociding Neytiri's people, displacing them permanently; killing most of her friends & immediate family & relatives, & leading them into a war that ended w intense rehabilitation. Shortly after all this, & even in between the first conflicts, she falls for him & literally desires him.

Ofc Jake was just "doing his job" then eventually changed his mind & heart once he became personally invested in the Omaticaya as ppl & Neytiri as a love interest (both situations are commentary in & of themselves). And Neytiri having a "strong heart" in many ways led her to personally invest in Jake as a love interest as well as a cultural investment since her teaching Jake the ways of the Omaticaya was possibly practice for her future role as Tsahìk (if u think abt it, Neytiri got some good diplomacy skills out of learning ways to better relate to humans from Jake, etc since shes already familiar w human culture being a previous student at Grace Augustine's school, & she should have been aware that Jake is affiliated w humans in some way). But personally i think the implications of their relationship & how quickly they became close felt rlly rushed & ended in a dissastisfying way when i was old enough to understand those implications.

I dont think using sci-fi allegories for issues regarding race, colonialism, etc is inherently problematic or racist, & tbh Avatar as a franchise could still have potential to explore other themes of colonization, etc (& even explictly critique capitalsm in these sequels tho thats prolly not likely considering the profit motivations of at least cameron's contributions to the films lol. I digress). Its just after seeing these videos & taking interest in learning Na'vi as a L2, L3, etc, im reminded of how Jake's character closely reflecting a white savior & Neytiri's character set up as an almost stockholm syndrome driven "princess" of a displaced & genocided ppl is a rlly unfortunate way the sequels introduce a family dynamic.

But i think Avatar (2009) is no real piece of liberation media anyway, & tbh it was a movie that exploited palatable anti-war, technology critical, conservationist, & anti colonial sentiments primarily to showcase new movie tech that would lead the industry; it was not as memorable to most ppl depite its box office impact bc the plot was so cliche & predictable, but it had a lot of potential bc of its relevant themes, unprecedented & immersive cinematography, special effects, & worldbuilding. Since Avatar is going off more & more themes surrounding indigenity, colonialism, imperialism, & war & many efforts were made over the last decade to revitalize ppls interests in the Avatar universe, i think the series will have a lot of time & content for fans & critics to contribute to its creative vision in a way truly creates an empowering image for the audiences it should resonate w.

Hopefully the story of the next sequels will be satisfying enough to somewhat tolerate (tho not forgive) the way Jake became a protagonist & had a family w a Neytiri soooo quickly.

d20!!! fave campaign.... watching acoc live was a fucking RIDE. acoc, fantasy high, and tuc are probably my top 3? but it's so hard for me to choose, i haven't watched one that i really disliked. one thing about me is i am something of a zac oyama stan, so some of my faves are gorgug, skip, and LAPINNNNNN i miss lapin so much, "where's your bulb now?" i was screaminggggg!!!!!! i wish he was there for longer!!!! just one more turn and he would have thunderstepped 😭😭😭 i really love acoc for its worldbuilding, it's such an interesting world and it's so rich and fleshed out and there's just endless questions and other lands and interesting npcs to explore. it actually inspired me and my friends to make our own acoc-inspired dnd campaign where instead of animated food, it was animated toys! i think i played a rogue hexaflexagon changeling, my friend was a barbarian stuffed bugbear, and i don't remember the others but like it was a really fun world to think about the logistics of. didn't get more than 4 sessions but it was still fun ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

also!! since you sent another ask i will answer it here!! my favorite color is purple lol it has been since second grade. i also rlly like a nice minty seafoam green or like a blue or pink or silver paired with it. tbh there's so many good colors out there not many ways to go wrong lmao

and finally the end by inktvis! ryley and bart escape from 4546b together in this and it does a great job at worldbuilding the planet and bart's characterization is My Beloved

ok ok bnha opinions so far... animation is very tasty. i am wildly spoiled by parahumans/wormverse worldbuilding so i will say iwould like. some more clarification as to the nature & purpose of quirks. like. it's perfectly fine that they were just like 'okay so the premise is everyone gets superpowers!' that's fine! but also... What is the evolutionary or scientific reason why a guy grows exhaust pipes out of his legs. how did quirks that like. appear to specifically relate 2 modern tech work 300 years ago. if we're assuming that quirks have always been a part of society. i would Like to know More <3 other than that... little bit weirdchamp that all of the villains are nonhuman capes but that is rlly to be expected. hate that trope though. would LOVE to see another version of Why powers that manifest in a nonhuman way are seen as inherently monsterous and lead to societal alienation & provide a pipeline to becoming villainous but tbh that is probably not happening here <3 i rlly enjoy deku... inherent delightfulness of a kid's adults thinking they're so fucking cool. what else... i like all might more than ithought i would. i love u cool disabled characters ^_^ also rlly that provides a satisfactory way to nerf him otherwise he's just. ridiculously op.... impressive that they managed to make an actually likeable & fairly believable iteration of the superman/captain america archetype who knock on wood doesn't turn out to be deeply fucked up & awful... all the costumes fucking SUCK. sorry. literally WHO at the high school said Yes there are NO costume restrictions u can sexualize urself as much as u want ^_^ they are HIGH SCHOOLERS!!! i do NOT want to see tits!! hey, advice anon here! i just wanted to thank you for the reply, you gave a lot of rlly good advice and now i just have to hope that exams don’t kill me before i can actually put them into practice 😪 if you were curious (you probably weren’t but i feel like i owe you a bit of rambling after you put in all that effort askfjsj), the au that’s been living in my head rent free is one where undyne, papyrus, sans, and grillby are kids/young teens travelling together during the war and all the worldbuilding about the events leading up to monsterkind being trapped underground is just a MASSIVE excuse to write found family tbh 💀 but again tysm for the advice you were rlly helpful!!
