Honestly, I don't find that fighting about whether playing Genshin ftp is boycotting or performative is helpful here. And I feel like us fighting with each other over how to protest 'properly' is just setting us up for failure. I have heard good arguments from both sides of the discourse, and I think that playing ftp and making it clear to Hoyo why and refusing to play completely are both good tactics.
That being said, there are some things that I think we should all be doing, regardless of how you personally want to boycott against/show that you don't support Hoyoverse. So, here are some things that we should all be doing:
-obviously, the biggest one is don't give them money. I shouldn't have to explain why, but just in case, I will say: this doesn't just refer to directly spending money in Genshin. I also mean no official merch or paying them in other games.
-don't talk positively about Hoyoverse or their games. This will probably get me some hate comments for saying it. To clarify, I don't mean that you're not allowed to have positive thoughts about their games! We all have things that we like about Genshin, including me! There are two reasons why;
First, hearing people talk positively about them or their games is basically free advertising, intended or not. The reason why their games are free and has ftp options are likely because, with Genshin especially, their main strategy to getting money is to please as many types of fans as possible. Ftp fans are still useful to them bc they can still make fan content that non-fans will see and be interested in. And the more people who play the game, the more people who will give them money.
Second, the more people keep talking about Hoyo stuff like we have been before, the more racist, sexist, etc. fans and Hoyoverse themselves will be able to keep up the illusion that nothing is wrong. Hell, I have a bunch of posts now and the vast majority of them are negative, yet my 2 most popular posts are some of my few posts that don't have anything negative in them. Trust me, a single post can mean more than you would think.
This point can also be customized to fit how you post. You could only post negative stuff as I do, or just stop posting about it all together. If you already don't post about them, great! If you want to continue making fan content that doesn't have to do with their problems, then maybe you could make a banner you can add to your posts saying that you don't support them. The point is to not have posts that Hoyo or their dickriders would be comfortable with.
-partially related to the last point, and mostly targeting content creators: don't portray characters with the exact same designs as canon! If you're not good at making character designs, that's okay! At the very least, portray characters such as the Sumeru and Natlan cast, some of the Chinese and Japanese characters, Boothill, and Aventurine with darker skin. And don't portray Kaeya, Xinyan, Iansan, Arlan, or Sugilite with gray-ish tones to their skin. I'd say that it's preferable if you did make your own designs that are more diverse, but it's okay if you don't know how. This can also be used as a way to show that you don't support Hoyoverse.

zerobase1 and how they play genshin | zb1
WHALE | META | CASUAL | NOT A GAMER
TAGS: headcannons, crack-ish, lowercase intended
A/N: as a genshin player and zb1 enjoyer, i own a wealth of knowledge. if you don't know what i'm referencing or talking about then i'm sorry lmao i get rly into genshin
WORDS: ~600 (~100 each)
Tumblr media
WHALES 🐋
GYUVIN - ok puppy dog has no spending sense and would swipe swipe swipe until he got the character. or somehow get his account robbed and card details stolen. wouldn't swipe for c6 on characters but would swipe for all the skins.
plot goes soaring over his head. though, he'd get 100% completion completely on accident bc he runs from chest to chest completing everything bc ooh shiny. (it's what i do)
definitely hops across different coop worlds to be an absolute menace. steals all your starconches, beatles and cor lapis and leaves.
a whale so team comp doesn't quite matter, but i feel like cool burst animation is a must.
RICKY - need i explain? he doesn't even play the game often, he just sees a cool looking character and swipes. feels like he would c6r5 a character if he really liked them. would get surprisingly into event content just for the exclusive items etc. cares mildly about the plot and zero for the exploration.
would play cool and pretty characters bc when you're a whale, team composition just doesn't matter.
Tumblr media
META 🎮
MATTHEW - a confirmed nerd by his sister so you bet he's an enthusiast. pays attention to kqm, twitter and future patch leaks. grinds out for the spiral abyss and has op asf team combos. would spend but only if he knows it's worth it.
enjoys the plot and characters, but not massive on exploration. still enjoys all the characters thoroughly and knows more lore tidbits than most. is the sweetest coop friend.
GUNWOOK - okokok he'd be apprehensive at first until he pulls like c5 benny and a eula then the world of dps (damage per screenshot) awakens. fights wars in the trenches of the honeyhunterworld comments section. stays updated and dips in and out of the game.
secretly stays about for plot. finds exploration boring but can admit it's pretty. the dude who refuses to swap characters when doing coop domains. does a boss blitz when bored.
Tumblr media
CASUALS 💫
HANBIN - ok only got it bc the kids said he should. (gyuvin uses him to get the coop achievements) actually ended up staying bc wow everything is gorgeous, the plot is engaging and the characters have depth! and it's all free ?? goes about it at a decent pace, doesn't do spiral often, just finishing floor 10.
tcg enjoyer and event player.
ZHANG HAO - TEAPOT MAIN god yeah hella into the teapot. only completes the story and everything for the teapot. comes on sometimes to help hanbin out or bc someone else needs mats from his world. has a solid overworld team for collecting mats etc.
mildly enjoys the plot but exploration is where it's at.
Tumblr media
NOT A GAMER 🌱
JIWOONG - only got it bc everyone else did, found out it took too much space on his phone, deleted it. tried playing it on gunwook's pc but had to play zhongli with his shield up 24/7 bc mechanics are hard okay! does see it as pretty and that yeah some characters are worth spending money for but there are better ways to find enjoyment in life.
TAERAE - doesn't mind it. he just doesn't see the hype over online characters. if and when he does play, it's on someone else's account and on the tcg. man loves the tcg, making decks and sweeping the floor with everyone.
has insane pull luck.
YUJIN - hmmm he sorta thinks it's cringe but gyuvin makes him play it. defo a valorant kid. tried to make a gun didn't work. plot doesn't matter much to him, interested in some character backstory but dips out when it comes to exploring. yujin defo thinks childe, xiao and alhaitham are cool. paimon gets on his nerves the most.
Tumblr media
i had lots of fun doing this so i hope you enjoyed ! leave a like or reblog if you did :) ⭒ masterlist

Today I'm Gonna Play: Nu: Carnival
I've always seen mobile gacha games that depict lots of female characters. I don't see much of the same for male characters, despite some games showing huge success of having them (i.e. HoyoVerse games and Fate Grand Order). I stumbled across a mention of this on a post about gachas with a male majority cast. I checked to see if it's worth it.
**TW: This is an 18+ BL game containing sexual content to the point that it's not even on the App Stores, although a censored version will be released soon for the stores. I will not be detailing the naughty bits much regardless.**
I have to say, when the content warning popped up mentioning that a scene contains adult content and that I have the option to skip it, I thought it'd be something akin to softcore for some reason. Instead, there was an entire scene with everything shown in all its glory and descriptions. I did get a laugh out of being surprised.
But admiteddly, this game does not cut corners in presentation, at all. The art style is very appealing with a diverse amount of character designs that fit various tropes, and the animation is actually spendid, both in regular and explicit scenes. Although regular animations do tend to move around with a lot of exaggeration, so this can be a turn off for some players. Maybe it's because I don't play BL or adult games much so I'm not in the know for what's the latest or what's buzzing, but I'm getting the impression that this game is a lot more underrated than expected.
The story is not too bad. At least for once I'm paying a little attention to it in a gacha game. It basically acts as an isekai where you gain the role of being a successor to a sorcerer and sex somewhat acts as an energy source. Character dynamics are nice where present, but the best part for me personally is that I like that the relationships are depicted in a healthy manner, where it's more consensual. There are also side stories in the form of events which are fun to read through.
Gameplay is surprisingly fun! It's turn-based with a front view perspective. The UI is very animated which feels like it's giving me little dopamine hits lol. Your party consists of the characters in different tiers known as rarity, and they also have roles such as debuffers, healers, strikers, etc. so there is a fair share of strategy involved. Your party also needs to be leveled up via potions, as well as increase their ranks (kind of like ascensions in Genshin Impact), and also increase certain base stats known as Potential. However at some point it does get grindy as the requirements for getting to the next levels gets higher and higher in terms of your team's power level. This is a system I loathed in another gacha game (Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis), but it's more bearable here because the game offers you other things to do instead, such as events.
As for the gacha aspects, there is a way to get the rolls you want by using a guest account and then binding when you're satisfied, so it is generous in that sense. I'm also F2P so far and I've had decent rolls in the beginning, though lately it's been awful lol. I did think about spending a bit of money, but the prices for what they ask are ridiculously high, which is one aspect I dislike about the game. You can instead gain rewards through quests such as dailies, weeklies, etc., join a guild to do quests in order to collectively earn rewards, do explorations and craft things, or buy with other currencies that don't require payment.
In the end, I'm actually playing this game religiously , but I'm also quite relaxed with it. It's a nice game to drop by and do some stuff and then hop off while you go about with your day. I do hope that the censored version can bring in more users (the intended audience, that is).

being a genshin impact fan is so embarrassing. like do i play the game more than is probably considered healthy. yes, yes i do. but do i play the game for the reasons the devs intended players like me too. no absolutely not.
like to give anyone who manages to find this post some context. i do not spend money on this game. i used too and then i realised that giving my money to hoyoverse was a terrible thing to do with said money so i stopped and now i just hoard primogems religiously. i also don't pull on the banners any more than once per patch and that's only if there's a new character that i actually want
additionally i don't even like any of the characters designs. i think they're all kinda shitty. i like the characters themselves but honestly their designs are mid tier gacha garbage. i play the game primarily for the lore and it always confuses me whenever i see other people who play genshin get up in arms about the game having no rewards or a character getting a bad kit. it's fascinating to watch people piss themselves stupid over something so... asinine
my sole source of genshin impact drama content is this one person on discord who i'm in a server in (that's not genshin impact related btw. it's a transformers shipping server) who will occasionally drop by my dms and give me the latest shipping drama on twitter

OK sorry this ask will get long, but I'm a gaming veteran and like to talk about the issues with microtransactions in games. No hate in this ask just some thoughts, peace and love
I agree with your thoughts on gacha and I do feel like there's a large percent of people online that turn a blind eye to a lot of lootbox/gacha pull systems in mainstream games that aren't like. Anime related due to most of the time racist reasons or opinions like "every game has this nowadays." But at the same time I do want to mention that I feel there's a difference between the lootbox systems in some of the games you've mentioned to other popular gacha games - as an example with league and ovw the lootbox system is something optional for things such as cosmetics and collectables, where you can still play the game, own all characters (even if you need to "grind"/play for currency to obtain them) and have the full game experience without it being paywalled or disturbed. You only really get annoyed if there's a Battle Pass system that benefits the one who buy it vs. the ones who don't (e.g. I believe in ovw2 you can instantly unlock characters with the BP while those that don't buy it need to grind) BUT Battle pass systems are on another level of predatory that doesn't apply to this conversation.
However in other games like arknights and genshin (can't think of more examples rn sorry) the gacha element is unavoidable if you want to obtain a character or a character's related weapons/points/buffs. You can still at the end of the day choose to not pull or spend money obv, but certain games require you to do these things for bonus gameplay content while others only roam to steal money for pretty skins. The gacha in the games I listed here and a lot others (that INCLUDE western games and games made by euro/american studios) is a predominant element and most of the time it's considered a genre. Think of how people may not be interested in a game sometimes until they hear there's a gacha/gambling element involved and instantly download it.
All in all gacha is something extremely predatory and it really is optional in every case, but I feel like with some games specifically the gacha element directly targets your gameplay and enjoyment of the game (e.g. pay to win characters, "must pulls") than others. That said people do really love to ignore certain mainstream games in conversations for reasons such as either "This doesn't affect me" or racial bullshit where they want to only target and shit on games that clearly don't target/aren't meant to please western or white audiences.
Hope this made sense as I've got a lot of opinions on the topic of Payments in video gsmes lol love and light, no hate intended in this ask
See anon. Id love to agree with your first point and say that cosmetics only gatcha isnt that harmful and isnt that bad but i have spent over 500$ on a cosmetics-only gatcha game, while only spending maybe 10$ on genshin while playing it for a year, so just from that i cannot say our perspective on this is on the same level. I do however agree with the rest of your points and I feel like you're all in all right on most stuff.

Also how does Genshins character system work? I know it's a Gacha but it just seems weird for a console lol
I guess it was the logical conclusion given lootbox culture, but I still shudder to think of what damage the Genshin model might do to console RPGs going forward... ugh
Basically, you're given 5 free characters to start with and you can get 2 free ones as you play, but besides that you need to roll for anyone else. The free characters aren't particularly flashy, but they all do their job and you get what you need to clear the game.
Rollable characters are a bit different. Powercreep in Genshin is already getting pretty bad, but for the main game it doesn't really matter because it's pretty simple to clear and team composition doesn't matter toooo much outside of challenge content (which is already aimed at whales that spend waaaay too much time and money on this game). If you're sticking free to play, I'd recommend rationing your in-game currency carefully and rolling for who you like, since meta doesn't matter much for standard gameplay. General rule of thumb is only roll on rate-up character banners as you've got a 50/50 chance of getting a non-rate up character if you hit pity anyway, and to leave weapons banner to the whales.
Don't stress if you miss a limited character, Genshin does reruns semi often because they produce new characters pretty slowly. Tartaglia's on his third re-run since his debut in Nov last year.
If you roll multiple copies of a character, you can use them to upgrade a character's "constellations" up to 6 times. This unlocks extra abilities on the character in question and no, no-one's happy that that's how you make some characters work as the game intends. I'd check out a character's constellations before rolling, just to make sure the character's going to work the way you expect them to without needing to roll multiple copies.
There are 3 banners; standard, rate-up weapons and rate-up character. Standard is going to be anything that isn't a limited-time weapon or character, and you can get unlimited 5 star weapons and characters here. The only 5 stars on rate-up characters are characters, same for weapons, but you can get 4star weapons and characters on both.
The gacha has a pity system that works like this:
Every 10 rolls on 1 banner guarantees you a 4star - either a weapon or a character. It must be the same banner, so 10 rolls on weapons = 1 guaranteed 4 star, but 5 rolls on weapons and 5 on standard does not.
Every 90 rolls on one banner guarantees you a 5 star.
On the rate-up character's banner, if your first 5star is not the rate-up character, your second is guaranteed to be.
On rate-up weapons, there are generally two weapons on rate-up. You can select the one you want, and if one of your first two 5stars aren't the selected rate-up weapon, your third is guaranteed to be.
Each banner also has it's own "soft pity" that raises the chance of rolling a 5star slightly around the 60~70 wish range.
Rate-up pity carries over! If you spend 80 rolls on rate-up character and don't get the limited character within the time limit, you still only have 10 rolls to get a guaranteed 5star on the next banner.
I wouldn't expect to see these characters very often. They don't show up in the overworld unless there's an event or quest for them - they're usually only in the main story/hangout/character quest. You'll spend far more time with Genshin's library of NPCs.

Hello Fa! I'm looking forward to your thoughts and impressions of Tears of Themis. I had heard of the game a long time ago and saw lots of translations, but I don't intend to invest in it unfortunately. You sound so interested, so it must mean it's really cool
Hi, anon, how you doing? o/
I intend to do a non-spoiler but really into the feeling of the game of the art style and the mechanics before the releasing, after the releasing I will do a more spoiler related review about the story in itself, so you guys can get the feeling of the characters and the main plot.
I still need to see how much it's going to be pay-to-play or not, but I really like the Gacha system and the art style and all the four characters. And since mcl is over and Eldarya is too expensive 🤷🤷 I can see myself paying for it, the same way I spend some money in Genshin from time to time.
Also, I was worried about the New MCL because of the whole reboot high school life thing... I feel I'm a little bit too old to play it or maybe... More like I feel that a high school romance is not as so attractive to me as it was when I started playing HSL. Ppl change with time so it's normal.
Tears of Themis have a very mature feeling around it, the characters look around my age, the main character is actually working in a really cool job and all. I can relate more with it I guess. xD Besides I really love Genshin, the little connection between the two games makes me really excited.
